Politics Without Redemption

General Index Field-Book IX Theme III

Politics Without Redemption is the third movement of Field-Book IX, opening the argument through three chapters.

Theme introduction

Introduction to Theme III

Politics loses its guarantee when history no longer carries a promised destination. Collective action must then operate without treating present sacrifice as the necessary price of a future reconciliation already secured.

Chapter 7 dismantles the historical promise that converts change into a path of redemption. Chapter 8 examines the common as an achievement requiring continuing practices of access and participation. Chapter 9 follows institution into provisional forms that must remain revisable by the differences they organise and exclude.

Without redemption, political responsibility becomes more immediate. No final order can justify avoidable harm or absolve a decision through the future it claims to serve; the common persists only through institutions capable of sustaining cooperation while remaining exposed to contestation and change.
