Introduction to Theme II
A gesture opens possibility when available forms cannot absorb the demands of a situation. Invention emerges from this pressure as a material reorganisation of what can be done, using inherited conditions without being confined to their repetition.
Chapter 4 locates invention wherever response exceeds an established routine; Chapter 5 confronts decision under conditions that provide no complete knowledge of consequences; Chapter 6 follows imagination into bodies and institutions, where an inscription of the possible can participate in changing the real relations from which it arose.
The opening remains constrained and answerable to its effects. A decision cannot wait for certainty, but uncertainty supplies no exemption from responsibility. Gesture, invention, and imagination converge where action must create a path whose consequences cannot be fully contained in advance.
