Imagination Is Also Ontology

1. Genealogy of Distrust and Rehabilitation of Imagination

1.1. Genealogy of Distrust: From Plato to Kant

Western philosophy systematically distrusted the imagination. Not by accident, nor by a localised conceptual error, but through a consistent internal logic spanning two thousand years of thought, from the ancient democracies of classical Greece to the universities of the eighteenth century. This genealogy of distrust is the foundation enabling us to comprehend, subsequently, the price that such distrust levied upon reason's capacity to think the future as a field of genuine invention.

Plato established the hierarchy that tradition would successively reformulate. In the Republic, imagination is identified as phantasia: the most degraded operation of access to reality, because it is an imitation of an imitation. The artist painting a bed represents not the empirical bed existing in a house; he represents the idea of the bed, the eternal Form in which the empirical bed participates. Yet the artist himself is an imitator of the sensible object which is already, in turn, an imitation of the Form. There are, therefore, two degrees of distance between the image produced by the artist and the truth: the sensible object itself is no longer truth, merely appearance; and the image is an appearance of an appearance. This double mediation places the imagination in a radically fragile position from the standpoint of truth. The imaginary is less real than memory, which touches the Form intellectually more directly; less certain than perception, which has sensible contact with the given; less verifiable than pure reason, which accesses the Form without sensible intermediation.

According to Plato, true creativity is not the production of radical novelty. It is controlled participation in pre-existing Forms, an eternal transfer of structure from the transcendent to the material. What the imagination does when attempting to transpose the Form into the sensible is necessarily contamination: what was perfect and whole in the domain of the intelligible becomes degraded in the attempt at representation. The internal logic is clear and coherent: to protect knowledge of the Forms against the contaminating flow of the empirical, the illusory, and that which cannot be rationally verified by pure intelligence. If imagination is left to operate freely in the space between the Form and the sensible, knowledge will be corrupted by the unreal. Hence imagination must be subordinated, controlled, and policed.

This pattern reappears, with variations, in subsequent centuries. British empiricism, through Hume and Locke, reformulates distrust with different arguments but a similar conclusion. Imagination, within this framework, is a composition of impressions inherited from experience. It is never radically new because it has no matter other than what the senses have provided. What is called fantasy is merely a rearrangement of already given material: a recombination of impressions of colours, shapes, movements, and sensations previously perceived. This limitation places imagination in a vulnerable position regarding the certainty of knowledge. Fantasy is permanently exposed to the risk of contamination: what was once perceived can be combined illusorily, prior impressions may be insufficiently purified, and new image configurations may stray beyond the limits allowed by the given. Imagination, in this empiricist view, is an operation introducing permanent risk into relation with reality. Less imagination means less room for error; more imagination means more possibility of deception.

Descartes, within the rationalist framework, locates the problem in another dimension. Imagination is, for Descartes, a bodily faculty, a manifestation of the union between soul and body characterising the human creature. Truth, however, resides in clear and distinct ideas, thoughts dispensing entirely with imagination, operating on the purely immaterial plane of the intellect. There exists, therefore, a type of pure thought bypassing images: geometric axioms, logical truths, metaphysical certainties. Imagination is authorised to function in the domain of corporeality and extension; yet regarding truth, it must be suspended, controlled, set aside. Reason must supervise imagination to ensure it does not contaminate pure thought with bodily residues.

Kant takes up the problem with peerless sophistication. In the Critique of Pure Reason, transcendental imagination is precisely the faculty producing schemata: mediations between pure intuitions of space and time and pure concepts of the understanding. Without this schematisation operation, categories of thought would be empty of content, sensible intuitions blind, incapable of synthesis. Imagination is, therefore, an unrefusable condition of possibility for knowledge. Kant goes further still. In the Critique of Judgement, the productive imagination of genius produces aesthetic ideas, configurations exceeding any determined concept and opening an indefinitely expandable field of sense. Here imagination operates with relative freedom, between understanding and reason. Yet even in this more generous position, imagination remains a separate, hierarchically subordinate faculty. It has its own function, yet that function is determined and legislated by another power: understanding regarding knowledge, reason regarding moral ideas. Imagination serves, mediates, presents, but does not determine. It remains an instrument.

Underlying this entire genealogy is an assumption regarding the difference between rigorous thought and thought working with the absent. Rigorous thought would be possible without imagination or with imagination controlled as a tool. Thought working with the absent, the possible, the future, would demand imagination, but at the cost of rigour. This disjunction is never explicitly formulated across these authors; it is presupposed, operating silently within their architectures. The outcome is consistent: subordination of imagination, systematic distrust, protection of reason against unreal contamination.

The price of this protection is catastrophic and only visible contemporaneously, when the political urgency of thinking the future becomes inescapable. A reason reduced to verifying the given, synthesising the present, applying already constituted categories, is a reason incapable of confronting the future as a field of genuine invention. It can extrapolate mechanically, extending past trends forward, calculating probabilities over what already happened and may repeat. It can extend knowledge of what is to what will be, maintaining identical structures. What it radically cannot do is treat the possible as a real operational field prior to any update, inscribing as an open field what does not yet exist nor is necessary to exist as projected.

Precisely this treatment of the possible as a real field characterises all genuine invention operations. When a new right is inscribed, not because situations to which it applies already exist (existing, true, are the violations it answers), but because prior law could not process them intelligibly, the legal regime operates ontological imagination. When a society re-organises politically because prior regimes collapsed, not because someone predicted it as good, but because change pressure became insupportable, it operates ontological imagination. When science created non-Euclidean geometry, not possessing confirming data prior to creation (possessing anomalies, resistances, impossibilities of formulating certain problems), but needing to re-configure the inscription apparatus to render thinkable the un-thinkable, it operated ontological imagination. All politics not limited to present management, all decisions not mere past continuations, all inventions not mere combinations of available elements, depend upon this capacity to treat the possible as a real operational field.

Reason inheriting two thousand years of systematic distrust in imagination, assimilating this distrust into its essence, is reason losing the capacity to think genuine change. Reason becoming a present administrator, a localised reformer of the existing, yet incapable of participating in inventing the new. This is the price of the genealogy traversing Plato, Descartes, Kant: no small or remediable theoretical error. A structural amputation of reason's capacity when confronting the non-existent future.

1.2. The Confusion Between Two Operations: Daydreaming and Ontological Inscription

The flaw in this genealogy resides in a fundamental confusion: Western philosophy confused two completely distinct types of operation sharing the same name. Both use symbols, both operate on thought planes, both demand abstraction capacity. Yet resemblance is superficial. The two operations differ radically regarding anchorage, validating criteria, and material world effects.

The first operation is daydreaming: image production lacking reference to real excess offered by bifurcations, lacking validation criteria beyond the daydreaming subject's psychic desire. Fantasising rescue situations, prince charming figures, personal redemption scenarios operates on daydreaming planes. Un-anchored in material bifurcations, in what reality offers as un-integrated re-organisation pressure. Lacking criteria beyond 'I want it so' or 'this would be beautiful if it occurred'. Philosophy rightly distrusted this. Daydreaming produces illusion, paralyses action, confuses personal perspectives with material reality, offering comfortable hope where rigorous diagnosis is required.

The second operation is ontological inscription: the capacity of any sufficiently complex symbolic system to render operationally real what is functionally absent from prevailing legibility regimes. Consider the farmer anticipating drought seasons. No current drought exists, yet material drought possibilities exist, reality pressures offer that possibility, climate offers foundations for drought occurrence. The farmer inscribes future water absence as an operational field, re-organising present water management based upon that inscribed absence. This operation is objective, systematic, anchored in real drought possibilities, with internal validation criteria: if drought occurs, the system functions; if un-occurring, the system was un-required yet operationally available. Not daydreaming: grounded anticipation. Consider the jurist imagining new laws when existing laws collapse. People exist whose situation is unintelligible under old legal categories, real pressures exist (injustice, conflict resolution impossibility, dignity violations) un-processable by prior regimes. The jurist inscribes non-existing legal organisation as a real normative field, re-organising present human relations based upon future inscriptions. Objective, systematic, anchored in legal excess no prior law integrated. With criteria: if new law resolves previously unintelligible cases, inscription functioned; if failing, diagnosis of excess was incomplete.

The physicist building theoretical models for phenomena prior theories failed to describe operates thus. Non-fantasising: inscribing absences as real present operators. Not scientific daydreaming; operation upon what reality already contains as un-updated re-organisation pressure. Rigour criteria stem not from data presence; stemming from links to real excess, to what current data and equipment render testable. Scientific hypotheses differ from daydreaming not merely by style rigour, but by anchorage in available experimental excess. Daydreaming lacks this anchorage. Daydreaming speaks of anything, magical qualities, impossible causalities, un-offered reality properties. Hypotheses stand constrained by what is operationally real.

Philosophical error lay in naming both 'imagination', as if identical operations differing merely in extension or sophistication. Both use symbolic materials, differing radically in origin and validation. Distrust held correct for daydreaming. Generalising distrust to ontological inscription was a profound error separating reason from genuine invention. Confusion produced catastrophic outcomes: severing reason's capacity to work with the non-existent, while maintaining rigour and reality anchorage. Suspecting all imagination operations rendered distrusting reason incapable of recognising its ongoing work: using ontological inscription to open possible fields.

Operatory clarification is necessary to break confusion paralysing philosophy for centuries. Both are symbolic field inscriptions, mobilising abstraction and non-present working capacities; only one stands radically un-anchored from reality, completely lacking operational validation criteria beyond momentary psychic satisfaction. The other matches verification rigour, often more rigorous, operating under permanent uncertainty, unable to invoke data to confirm before action, creating new inscription instruments before knowing functionality. Children's daydreaming of physics-law-violating worlds, people flying without machines, pure-will desire fulfilment, is one operation type. Nineteenth-century Lobachevskian mathematical inscription of negative constant curvature space, essential for general relativity formulations, is a completely different operation type. Both require imaginative capacity, abstraction, intense mental work. Only the second is ontological inscription.

The farmer's work re-organising water management anticipating future drought, or the jurist creating new law answering situations rendered unintelligible by prior regimes, or the scientist inventing new apparatuses due to accumulated anomalies: fundamental rigour. No less rigorous than present data verification. Rigorous differently: demanding careful excess diagnosis, non-existing instrument creation, exposure to genuine error (diagnosis may err, instruments fail). Yet rigour. Ontological inscription is no license for un-grounded speculation. Operation upon what reality offers as un-integrated pressure. Lacking clear distinctions between un-anchored daydreaming and real-excess-anchored inscription, every political invention thought attempt remains contaminated by inherited Platonic, Cartesian, Kantian distrust. Politics becomes present management or criterionless fantasy. Operatory clarification opens third possibilities: politics working with reality pressure, diagnosing created impossibilities, participating in new inscription operations lacking control illusions or prior certainty.

Differences are material. Daydreaming produces momentary psychic satisfaction, tension relief, present reality escape, re-organising nothing externally. Altering no material relations, producing no persistent effects beyond fantasy cessation moments. Ontological inscription, even on purely theoretical or legal planes, produces lasting effects: altering thinkable possibilities, changing operational fields for adopters, re-organising human-human or human-material relations. New rights-protecting legal instruments create non-existing normative fields, guiding behaviour, rendering thinkable and demandable what was previously unthinkable. Non-Euclidean space mathematical theories alter not universe geometry immediately, yet render thinkable and calculable what was impossible, creating mental operation fields previously blocking reality access.

Both use symbolic capacities, dispensing with physical presence of represented objects. Differences are non-psychological ('more irrational') nor epistemological ('less knowledge'). Differences are ontological: one anchored in real excess present conditions bear, the other un-anchored. One possessing validation criteria transcending producing subjects (verifiable through operational functioning), the other possessing interior psychic criteria (subject satisfaction/dissatisfaction). A cleavage Western philosophy failed to formulate clearly, confusing both under 'imagination', distrusting all bearing that name.

1.3. Kant as a Theoretical Limit: Transcendental Imagination and the Crucial Unthought

Kant represents Western thought's most sophisticated limit regarding imagination, deserving careful analysis. Not as an error figure to be rejected entirely, but as a boundary marking where Western thought arrived in understanding imagination, and where it irretrievably failed to advance. No subsequent philosophy genuinely surpassed Kantian architecture without implicitly recognising invention problems differ radically from knowledge problems.

Kantian convergence is insuperable, recognised without attenuation. In the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant establishes transcendental imagination as schematism: the condition of possibility for synthesis between sensible diversity, data multiplicity provided by senses, and concepts, intellectual units organising multiplicity. The schema mediates between intuitive (given to senses via space-time intuition) and intellectual (prescribed by understanding as concept). First-order lucidity un-deniable by subsequent analysis. Thinking, in full un-ifying sense under concepts, applying pure categories to sensible intuitions, is impossible without imagination operating schemata enabling application. Imagination is indispensable, structurally, for understanding categories to find application points in sensible intuitions. Without imagination, theoretical thought fails to function: failing empirical data verification, requiring concept schemata applied to sensible intuition; failing thought extension into futures, requiring causality schemata to think un-occurred event sequences.

Kant goes further, carrying un-explored implications. In the Critique of Judgement, he develops genius productive imagination. Non-merely schematic (medial between sensible and conceptual). Deeper creative: producing aesthetic ideas, configurations exceeding determined concepts, opening indefinitely expandable sense fields. Here imagination operates with relative freedom, between understanding and reason, un-determined by either. Genius possesses productive imagination, presenting un-predetermined ideas. Extraordinary recognition admitting, in aesthetics, exact creation types Critique of Pure Reason denied or subordinated.

Yet even in generous positions, imagination remains a separate, hierarchically subordinate faculty. Possessing proper function; reality legislation belongs to understanding regarding theoretical knowledge, reason regarding moral ideas. Imagination serves, mediates, presents, un-determining true or good. Remaining an instrument, though indispensable. Reason's supremacy as legislating power remains intact.

Underlying this construction is an un-explicit assumption regarding differences between rigorous thought and absent-working thought. Rigorous thought is possible without imagination or with imagination controlled as rule-subordinated tools. Absent-working, possible-working, future-working thought demands imagination at rigour costs. Disjunction un-explicitly formulated; presupposed, operating silently in faculty architectures and critical projects. Consistent outcome: imagination, even recognised as indispensable, remains subordinate, structurally minor, non-determining.

Recognition is fundamental, representing enormous advance over Plato or Descartes. Yet Kant fails to advance beyond a certain point. Remaining structurally trapped in inherited Cartesian faculty divisions. Imagination sits between sensibility and understanding, occupying mediating positions, serving indispensable roles, un-determining in legislating senses. Understanding reigns supreme: supplying pure categories, legislating valid knowledge, determining imagination uses as reason-conforming or illusory. Aristotelian divisions between superior (reason, auto-originated) and inferior faculties (sensibility, imagination, receptive/mediating) persist in Kantian architecture. Preservation preventing Kant from seeing crucial matters.

What Kant fails to think: all thought operations upon futures, upon non-updated given data, are necessarily ontological imagination operations. Including rigorous reason confronting fields needing creation before rational work. Scientific genuine discovery is not merely applying available categories to new observed data. Finding excess prevailing categories fail to process, creating new inscription regimes rendering excess operable and intelligible. New regimes are un-describable as Kantian transcendental imagination applications, concept schematisation in intuition. Something more fundamental: thought folding upon itself encountering limits, re-configuring upon encountering irreducible resistance.

Kant formulates specific questions, answering brilliantly: what are conditions of possibility for knowing the given? What thought architecture allows knowing what exists, applying understanding categories to sensible data building verifiable universal knowledge? Complete answers. The entire Critique of Pure Reason answers with un-shakable rigour. Yet distinct un-formulated questions exist, equally crucial for politics and historical life: what are conditions of possibility for invention? What symbolic operation allows creating the non-existent, inscribing non-updated possibilities as operational fields, bringing un-present things into world appearance?

Radically distinct questions demanding completely different conceptual apparatuses. Given-knowledge demands verification, applying constituted categories, reason-directed synthesis under transcendental coherence rules. New-invention demands inscribing non-existent fields, creating un-existing legibility regimes, re-organising inscription apparatuses prevailing systems use to capture reality. The former is Kantian schematisation: schema mediating concepts and intuitions, applying categories to sensible data. The latter un-named by Kant, lacking conceptual room: apparatuses folding upon un-processable excess without fundamental self-transformation.

Identified transcendental imagination operations remain, in Kantian systems, subordinate to larger verificatory thought structures. Un-recognising reason's regime when working with futures, possibilities, un-given present actualities. Kant structured solving epistemological valid knowledge problems, not ontological-political invention problems, losing sight of future knowledge as non-existent pre-acted data knowledge. Inscribing possible fields as real operations.

Limitation is no localised contingent defect in Kantian thought. Imposed necessarily by Kantian problem formulations. Kant asks: 'What is necessary for knowledge possibility?' answering with complete transcendental, category, synthesis, schema architectures. What thought must be for invention possibility is radically different, demanding different conceptual apparatuses and methods. Kant answers not by un-formulating, critical projects starting with knowledge as central problems, invention as creative applications. Leaving in complete shadow what is urgent for political life, science in rupture moments, historical operations creating new fields before working within: conditions of possibility not for verification (resolved by Kant), but apparatus folding upon encountering un-inscribable grammar limits.

1.4. Bachelard and Castoriadis: Rehabilitation with Mandatory Differentiations

Bachelard and Castoriadis represent closest, demanding interlocutors. Recovering imagination from secondary tradition locations. Yet demanding non-negligible differentiations. Real convergence; fundamental divergence.

Bachelard removes imagination from Kantian shadows, placing it central to scientific knowledge reflection. In La Formation de l'Esprit Scientifique (1938), Bachelard identifies epistemological obstacles: habits of thought, sedimented images, metaphors blocking rigorous reality capture by scientific spirits. Obstacles are non-ignorance as mere knowledge absence. Ill-organised knowledge, solidifying into certainty before genuine verification, becoming obstacles through deep roots. Caloric physics, heat as flowing material substance, was internally coherent, logically consistent. Yet rendering kinetic theory impossible: heat as substance precludes heat as particle motion. Epistemological ruptures destroy obstacles, creating new inscription instruments rendering heat intelligible radically differently. Bachelard terms this error rectification, yet deeper: regime conversion, transforming apparatuses determining what is thinkable as real.

Convergence with ontological inscription is strong, un-deniable, un-diluted. Epistemological obstacles are excess inscriptive regimes fail to process. Prior knowledge became obstacles because reality bore un-accommodated phenomena, category-unexplainable resistances, anomalies rendering regimes incoherent. Epistemological ruptures Bachelard defends are new inscriptions prior regimes rendered impossible to think, creating apparatuses inscribing what axiomatically was excluded.

Bachelard sees clearly: science history is non-gradual continuous knowledge accumulation, slow stable constructions where generations add to prior solid builds. Sequences of ruptures, regime conversions, where prestigious taught knowledge becomes obstacles to new knowledge. Caloric was un-refuted simply by contradicting data. Caloric became impossible when new inscription regimes (kinetic thermodynamics) rendered it logically un-necessary, showing heat explained fundamentally without caloric substances. Regime conversions, non-error corrections. Scientific imagination is un-application of Kantian transcendental imagination. Creating new inscription apparatuses rendering visible, operable, thinkable what prior regimes rendered invisible, inoperable, unthinkable.

Mandatory differentiation bears upon what sustains epistemological ruptures and creative capacity locations. Bachelard anchors ruptures in science history and scientific spirit psychology: ruptures are scientific subject formations, pre-scientific state superations, educating spirits rectifying errors, consciousness self-conversions. Personalising processes, privileging epistemological subjects as operation centres and origins. Scientific spirits are cultivated subject capacities, institutional science training outputs.

Our position generalises radically, decentralising this scheme. First, relative impossible and ontological inscriptions occur non-exclusively in scientific regimes. Occurring in any complex inscription regime: scientific, political, artistic, legal, social, technical, linguistic. Second, radically refusing psychological foundations: ruptures are non-individual/collective spirit formations, subject capacity developments, consciousness educations. Inscription regime conversions, material instrument re-configuration operations, symbolic apparatus transformations existing independent of manipulating subjectivities. No privileged subjects perform them; material inscription processes produce them when reality excess accumulates sufficient pressure, anomalies multiply, internal system coherence collapses. Bachelard's gesture stays centred on thinking subjects, learning spirits, educating consciousness. Our gesture decentralises to operating inscriptions independent of carriers.

Castoriadis is closer, demanding careful differentiation. In L'Institution Imaginaire de la Société (1975), Castoriadis formulates radical theses: social imaginaries are collective meaning creations instituting society as reality. Society is non-derivable from material necessity (rejecting vulgar Marxist economic determinism); non-derivable from biological structure (rejecting sociobiology). Historical creation, continuous meaning, symbol, value, institution inventions un-predetermined in prior structures, emerging as radically new.

Critical, decisive, un-refusable convergence. Castoriadis retains creative capacity rescued from philosophical obscurity by Bachelard, taking it to extremes. Genuine creativity, radically new production, past ruptures, prior transcendence: Castoriadis insists against functional/causal reduction that social institutions reduce not to prior determining conditions. Emerging new items are non-deducible logically from old items. Non-predictable structure transformations. Genuine creativity, radical imagination. Social imaginaries reproduce not structures; instituting new sense, meaning, value configurations. Un-concedable to historical determinism (each stage logically derived from prior) or structuralism (synchronic transcendental structure determining sense). Castoriadis defends ineluctable creative freedom margins, human societies inventing un-prescribed meanings, genuinely open futures.

Yet Castoriadis characterises creativity more radically: defining as ex nihilo: creating absolutely new items, un-derived from prior items, un-transforming available conditions, sprouting from nothing, originating in human psyche creative capacities. Conferring near-transcendental, ontologically primitive status to radical imaginaries in anti-essentialist, radically historical projects. Human psyches become origins, sources, inexhaustible ex nihilo creation capacities. Radical imaginaries specific to humans, human properties; creating meanings exceeding prior determinations belongs to psyche modes of being, human ontological characteristics.

Mandatory differentiation targets ex nihilo characterisations and creativity locations in psychic subjects. The ex nihilo thesis is ontologically imprecise, failing under rigorous examination. All emergence, new production, occurs from excess available conditions contain as un-updated re-organisation pressure. Creation is non-production of absolute new items, non-creation from absolute nothing. Updating potency material conditions contained, operationalising what reality bore as re-organisation pressure. No ex nihilo creation exists ontologically. Creation stems from excess: what reality bears as material possibilities, existing as un-integrated pressure in prevailing regimes, operating on existing structures prior to inscription, prior to legibility.

Ontological imagination inscribes this excess reality contains. Emerging new items are non-new as non-existent in any domain. New as non-updated, un-inscribed in prevailing legibility regimes, existing as potency rendered operative and real by inscription. Fundamental difference without compromise: ex nihilo paradigms create from nothing, creative miracles occur, ontological transcendence exists, human psyches act as transcendent sources un-derived from prior structures. Excess paradigms create from reality-offered pressure, material continuity exists, ontological rigour exists, creation is symbolic operation upon un-updated potency.

Crucially, Castoriadis locates creation in collective subjects: society conceived as subjects instituting meanings, values, imaginaries via collective wills, social desires, shared imaginary capacities. Implied voluntarism: societies desiring collectively, collective wills imagining, social desires institutionalising, new items emerge. Creation as collective subject properties.

Our position rejects psychic anchors (location in individual/collective psyches) and voluntarist anchors (will/desire originating creation). Ontological imagination is an inscription system property, non-manipulating subject property. Inscription operates, creates new fields, produces novel possibilities, independent of explicit consciousness or deliberative wills of carriers. Technical bodies institutionalise new law because prior legal regimes collapsed under weight, accumulated unintelligible case pressure reached critical limits, inscriptions needed re-configuration or ceased functioning. Not because someone 'wanted' new law with special intensity, not because collective wills decided to invent. Creation is an inscription operation property, non-psychology or will property accompanying or participating within it.

Both Bachelard and Castoriadis possess inestimable merit. Retaining crucial matters: imagination as genuine creation, new production un-existing prior as crystallised symbolic formations, history as non-indefinite past replication, ontological ruptures between prior and new states. Both commit parallel structural errors: locating creation origins in subjects, whether epistemological learning subjects (Bachelard) or desiring instituting collective subjects (Castoriadis). Necessary deep displacement without attenuation: genuine creation is an inscription, symbolic apparatus operation property. Inscription precedes manipulating subjects, continuing post-subject disappearance, un-depending on psychology or will for origin or persistence. Subjects amplify, intensify, orient, participate actively; un-originating fundamental operations. Participating in processes underway in inhabited structures, ontologically preceding and succeeding subjects.

The ultimate gesture of this differentiation decentralises creativity from individual or collective psychism, will, or conscious subjects, relocating it ontologically where it truly resides: in inscription operations simultaneously material (atom arrangements, energy flows, propagation structures, material behaviour conformities), linguistic (symbols, words, grammatical structures, sense composition rules), and institutional (practices, protocols, operating rules, socially legitimated conduct patterns). Inscription creates the new. Subjects inhabit inscriptions, carrying them through bodies and actions, developing them in unexpected directions, yet creative capacity is un-owned by subjects. Property of participating, constituting, transcending symbolic systems.

This recalibration allows seeing what Bachelard and Castoriadis captured without fully comprehending: creativity is no private spirit or will property, but an operation transcending subjects. Non-assertion of irrationalism or romantic counter-enlightenment. Assertion of greater rigour: operations, inscriptions, legibility regimes create, not author wills, conscious intentionality, deliberative decisions. Meaning not subjects are passive or irrelevant. Subjects participate intensely, work creatively, contribute uniqueness, material dispositions, sensitivity to reality pressures. Yet creation traverses subjects, using, surpassing, exceeding intended or imagined outcomes. Subjects are material conditions inscriptions need to operate, vehicles through which operations pass, non-transcendent creation origins. Liberating creation (removing private psychic property weight, genius captures) and subjects (dispensing with romantic 'creative' requirements to participate in invention, opening creativity to anyone recognising regime limits).

Political importance of this reformulation is immediate. If creation is an inscription property, non-subject or collective will property, politics consists not in mobilising collective wills to invent new regimes. Consisting in recognising when prevailing regimes collapse, when reality excess fails to process via available inscriptions, when accumulated impossibility pressures want to re-organise possibility fields. Creative politics consists in participating in inscription operations, creating new instruments rendering operable the inoperable, letting reality force shifts until change becomes intelligibility necessity, non-will caprice.

Comprehension emerging when differentiating Bachelard and Castoriadis, refusing psychologism and voluntarism, displacing creation origins from subjects to inscription operations. Imagination ceases to be private capture, privileged reserve, genius property. Becoming operating system properties, available to anyone recognising regime limits, reality pressing beyond inscription capacities. Radically shifting political questions: non-will, decision, intentionality questions. Intelligence questions: seeing where regimes created impossibilities reality bears not, diagnosing excess, participating in re-configuration operations reality forces.

Thesis-Aphorism: Imagination resides not in the imagining subject; it resides in the inscription treating the absent as operationally real.

2. Ontological Imagination as an Operatory Regime

2.1. The Symbol as an Operation Upon Absence

The symbol is the fundamental operation whereby a symbolic system renders operationally real that which is not sensibly given. This characterisation is non-metaphorical; it describes the structure of any symbolic inscription where the present is re-organised by reference to something transcending it. A dog pushing a door uses the door as a function: executing an operation upon the immediate present according to a mechanism response to a stimulus. A human planning an exit before rising uses the door as a symbol: inscribing the absence of the exterior space as an operational field organising the present where he still finds himself, re-structuring the perception of inhabited space. The difference resides not in intelligence or foresight; it resides in the operation: symbolisation is treating the absent as operationally real, as something already impinging upon what is done here.

This operation distinguishes itself radically from daydreaming, the other modality where absence inscribes itself in consciousness, yet lacking anchorage in the real excess that constraints offer. Daydreaming projects desired images without reference to what present conditions render possible; the fantasist imagines a prince charming unrelated to the material life inhabited. Symbolisation inscribes absences that reality already contains as un-updated re-organisation pressure. The farmer anticipating future drought re-organises present water management, not because drought is his desire (it is a threat), but because reality offers that possibility, because climate carries variations rendering droughts historically possible, because documented patterns suggest recurrence. The scientific model inscribing un-measured variables treats absence as an operational field because prior theory produced anomalies, because data already offer un-integrable excess. The political constitution inscribing the rule of law as a normative field treats it as an operatory real because conflicts existed prior law failed to process, because groups existed whose demands prevailing regimes could not articulate: women whose humanity was legally invisible, workers whose situation was inexpressible in medieval property categories.

Characterising the symbol as an operation upon absence recovers a truth Western philosophy never ceased to intuit, yet subordinated to other concerns. Plato recognised that the symbol, the image, the eikon, are necessary mediations between the sensible and the intelligible; what he distrusted was that they were trustworthy mediations, that they did not contaminate access to truth with deformations proper to the symbolic dimension. For Plato (Republic X, Sophist), the symbol is a fall: progressive distance from the Form, the artist imitates the sensible object which itself is an imitation of the eternal Form, producing an imitation of an imitation, truth triply distant. What is lost in this analysis is precisely what ontological imagination demands perceiving: that operation upon absence is a rigorous operation, possessing internal validation criteria, neither madness nor reality escape but a mode of re-organising it. The Form remained for Plato a transcendent guarantee; the thesis developed here rejects that guarantee and treats symbolisation as a material operation verified in its effects.

The genealogy of this distrust extends across modern philosophy. Descartes subordinated imagination to understanding as a minor instrument: imagination was the faculty of bodily images, distant from pure reason accessing clear and distinct ideas. The Cartesian cogito imagined not; it was pure thought validating itself without possible symbolic mediation. Error in Descartes is twofold: reducing imagination to passive sensation reproduction (when in fact a productive operation), and assuming access to truth without symbolic mediation exists (a methodological illusion, the cogito itself is a symbolic operation, inscribing as indubitable real what is absent from immediate sensible presence). Kant attempted to rehabilitate transcendental imagination, recognising its essential function in synthesising intuitions under understanding categories; yet maintained subordination: imagination was a mediating faculty serving understanding legislation. What Kant failed to think was imagination as creator of the field where legislation can subsequently occur, imagination creating possibility structures before mediation is required. Bachelard went further, in The Psychoanalysis of Fire and The Poetics of Space, rescuing material imagination productivity: daydreaming over material elements is non-escape but symbolic transformation altering perception and desire. Yet locating operations in poetic subjects, educating spirits, revitalising consciousnesses. What Bachelard reaches not is operation independence regarding executing subjects, imagination remains property of a creating, reviewing consciousness transforming through material sympathy. Our position goes beyond: inscription operations matter, not executing consciousnesses. Symbols require no conscious creator subject for strength to function; functioning through real consequences upon how operational fields re-organise.

Anticipation is the fundamental form whereby symbolisation operates upon the future. Distinguishing clearly from prediction, with which often confused: prediction asserts the future will be thus, extrapolating present patterns; anticipation inscribes the future as an operational field guiding the present without determining outcomes. The farmer predicts rain pattern occurrences based upon historical climate regularities; anticipating drought, the opposite possibility, re-organising management based on anticipation, treating both futures as real present pressures. Scientific models predict observable behaviours within conceptual regimes via past data calculations; anticipating un-observable states (electromagnetic field oscillations, light propagation modes) invalidating predictions if un-verified. Political constitutions predict not obedience (history showing continuous struggles); anticipating rule of law as normative horizons people and institutions reference to act, contest, demand compliance. Anticipation is structurally distinct from prediction, requiring un-stabilised operational fields: inscribing prior to stabilisation, treating openness as resources rather than obstacles, converting future indeterminacy into operational space.

This symbol operation, inscribing as operationally real what is un-present as updated, is designated here as ontological imagination. Non-imagination as dream fantasy or un-bound free creation; imagination constrained materially and mandatorily by reality excess pressure. Imagination as inscription regimes where absence functions as genuine operative work fields, where symbol production carries real consequences upon present re-organisations.

What Western philosophical traditions termed imaginative faculties, systematically subordinating to understanding or reason as inferior or mediating faculties, is operatory modes of sufficiently complex symbolic systems encountering fields needing creation before rational work. In Kant, transcendental imagination reduces to schemata: producing mediations between sensible intuition and concepts, while concepts (understanding categories) maintain legislative supremacy. In Bachelard, material imagination rescues genuine productivity: daydreaming on water, fire, earth is non-escape but symbolic transformation modes. Yet Bachelard anchors imagination in learning epistemological subjects, educating spirits, failing to think inscription without executing subjects as consciousnesses. Our thesis goes beyond: ontological imagination is an inscription operation, non-subject property. What matters is non-imaginer (epistemological subject, poetic consciousness, creative genius) but inscription accomplishments, re-organising material operativity fields.

Ontological imagination is what reason needs to be when un-given data exist, needing absent inscription as operationally real before rigorous operation. Resolving long philosophical divorces between reason and imagination non-fusionally (as identical items) but regime differentiation: two same-process operations, non-entities controlling another.

This recognition carries profound consequences for non-routine present human actions. Farmers planning droughts anticipate the absent; engineers drawing prototypes inscribe non-existing items as material work fields; political activists occupying public squares create new institutions for collective future organisation deliberation; poets finding new words for un-nameable experiences re-organise signable communicable items within language. In all cases, non-phantasmagoria or reality escape occurs. Operations upon absence as operational presence occur, treating it as work fields because reality offers possibility, because excess rendered prior regimes impassable. Here lies non-decorative dignity of imagination: non-ornaments of practical reason, conditions for reason to handle futures, innovations, un-inscribable problems under prevailing categories. Ontological imagination is reason encountering new fields and operating within.

2.2. Ontological Imagination and Reason: Regimes, Not Faculties

Relations between reason and ontological imagination are non-relations between separate entities, nor hierarchical subordination relations where noble faculties serve lesser ones. Distinctions between two operating regimes of the same symbolic process: regimes differentiated by processed field nature, yet continuous, un-separated by impermeable borders. Dissolving Aristotelian faculty divisions traversing Western philosophy, reason as sovereign, imagination as servant, is required for genuine political thought.

When operational fields are given, present and inscribed past offering verification, inference, pattern detection data, reason operates under verification regimes. Applying available categories, correcting hypotheses on evidence, deducing logical consequences, constructing proof arguments. Indispensable regimes; knowledge stabilises, action coordinates, epistemic communities reproduce. Operating on established fields permits routine procedures: experimental methods, legal codes, technical protocols repeat without fundamental re-configuration per case. Yet another indispensable regime exists, operating radically differently. When operational fields are un-given, needing creation before verification, reason must inscribe what enables verification. This second regime is what ontological imagination designates: non-construction of new concepts within prior concepts, but conceptual apparatus re-configurations.

Differences separate non-rigorous from free or creative thought. Both regimes can be rigorous; both negligent or superficial. Careless verifications exist alongside ontological imaginations disintegrating at initial pressure. Differences are operatory: first regimes organise existence; second regimes create spaces for organisation. Scientists analysing spectroscopy data structure according to prevailing light spectrum theory; operating under verification regimes. Planck recognising black-body data contradicted classical thermodynamics, needing energy quantisation imagination, operated under ontological imagination regimes. Non-less scientific; performing science-demanded work when frames collided with un-processable resistance. Quantum mechanics inaugurated by Planck, formalised by Heisenberg, Schrödinger, Dirac, was non-discovery of hidden truth; creation of new inscription regimes where subatomic behaviour ceased being impossible to articulate, becoming rigorous physics domains.

Paul Ricoeur, in The Rule of Metaphor, identified with luminous precision that metaphors are non-rhetorical ornaments or literal sense deviations: cognitive operations genuinely creating new reality visions. Live metaphors transfer non-sense from domain to domain; re-organising semantic fields introducing controlled perturbation in established classifications, enabling thought to see radically anew. When Baudelaire writes women are perfect ports, abundant and calm, non-decorating with pleasing visual comparison; creating new legibility fields where women are non-classical desire objects (conquest, possession) nor family property figures (wife, reproduction), but material symbolic refuges, repose, personal transformation spaces, relational categories prior poetry un-stabilised as possibilities. Metaphors are ontological imagination in language domains because inscribing as operational real fields (comprehension possibilities readers inhabit and validate) relations semantic categories rendered un-thinkable. Ricoeur shows cognitive power of metaphors resides in re-description capacities: non-re-ordering or recombining known items in new sequences holding concepts fixed, but opening new intelligibility domains where previously impossible classified relations (women as refuges) cease impossibility, becoming operative intelligibility. Necessary differentiation: Ricoeur anchors metaphoric power in natural language and interpreter hermeneutic intentionality, consciousness comprehends metaphors, sense opens. Our position rejects this anchorage: metaphoric inscriptions function because producing symbolic-material field re-organisations carrying real effects, independent of receiving reader consciousness.

Distinctions between reason and ontological imagination dissolve not; shifting nature and gaining operativity. Non-separate faculties but regimes of the same symbolic process operating upon reality. Knowing one operates under ontological imagination regimes, knowing operational fields require creation before verification, validation is necessarily posterior non-prior, success criteria are re-organisation potency non-data correspondence, radically changes sought items and outcome evaluations. In verification, success is coherence with previously gathered evidence. In ontological imagination, success is internal coherence (inscriptions un-contradicting themselves) and capacity re-organising fields where opacity or expression impossibility existed.

Operational differences between regimes exemplified in historical transition moments. Minkowski unifying space and time in 1908 ('Space and Time' lecture) confirmed non-hypotheses against observed data; creating new apparatuses where space and time ceased being independent axes, becoming single continuum dimensions, observer-relative separation. Mathematics existed, Lorentz transformations known since 1895 as Maxwell equation invariant tools, yet Minkowski re-organised conceptual apparatuses, inscribing as operationally real space-time unity Newtonian physics treated as impossible (as unity, treating space/time independent). Models function through internal coherence (Lorentz transformations preserve space-time interval shapes, physical laws rewritten in covariant form), producing new fields where contradictory-seeming phenomena (relative observer synchronism, length contraction, time dilation) cease contradiction, becoming necessary space-time structure consequences, predicting un-formulable phenomena in prior theories (light deflection in gravity fields, gravitational waves, space-time curvature gravity). Yet inscription validation was posterior: un-confirmable in advance, cumulative experimental confirmations (Eddington 1919, spectroscopic shifts, gravity tests) consolidated inscriptions as durable operative regimes.

Similar examples echo in distant domains. Nineteenth-century feminists inscribing women as political legal subjects, challenging common law, civil code, electoral practice, verified non-antecedently women executing political responsibilities (lacking examples, data empty of precedent). Creating new operational fields where politically impossible items (women as legitimate public actors, voters, independent property owners) became inscribable, argumentable, demandable. Validation was posterior: practical verification via progressive implementation across jurisdictions showed political organisation functioned, women participation produced non-institutional collapse but productive political practice re-organisation. Meaning non-early feminists lacked material correctness knowledge; inscribing new political categories, women as rights subjects, un-confirmable in advance because prior regimes rendered them aprioristically impossible to consider empirically. Issues inscribed in new regimes rendered thinkable.

Critiques targeting Kant stem not from transcendental imagination analysis insufficiency, analysis structurally correct for Kantian-defined problems. Critiques note Kant fails to think situations where imagination must create fields for subsequent synthesis. Analysing experience possibility conditions (Critique of Pure Reason), Kant assumes experience fields given: sensible intuitions exist, understanding categories exist, imagination mediates. Asking invention possibility conditions, creating new possible experience fields, structures shift fundamentally. No a priori legislating understanding exists because fields exist not to legislate upon. Imagination must create structures reason subsequently legislates within. Kant sees imagination mediating existence; failing to think imagination creating coming-into-existence fields. Difference between two distinct philosophical questions: what enables knowing existence? (Kantian question) versus what enables creating non-existence? (political, innovative scientific question).

Consequences: genuine politics, non-present management invention, depends essentially on ontological imagination as reason regimes. Non-because politicians are creators/visionaries, many un-are, much politics routine, but structural real political change demands new inscription regime creation. Slavery abolition was non-verification that slavery was wrong under existing moral data; creating new legal-moral regimes where enslaved persons ceased being things-properties (res), becoming rights subjects. Prior law (Roman, medieval) lacked categories inscribing possibilities; abolitionists created institutional-symbolic regimes rendering enslaved humanity legibly subject. Feminism verified non-women held political rights under prior data; created new political regimes where women became public voice, property, vote subjects. Decolonisation noted non-colonised should be free from colonial data; inscribed new political regimes where colonised shifted from dominated subjects (voiceless in dominating community constitution) to sovereign peoples (own institution authors). In each case, ontological imagination was a necessary condition: creating symbolic-institutional fields where new norm verification and application became possible.

Cornelius Castoriadis, in The Imaginary Institution of Society, develops complementary analysis on imaginaries as instituting dimensions of social organisation. Imaginaries for Castoriadis are continuous creations of new meanings, institutions, life forms un-deducible from prior rational factors, 'radical imaginaries' founding spaces where reason operates. Our position retains this characterisation: new regime inscriptions are creation of new significance fields, non-application of preceding categories. Yet Castoriadis locates processes in social group praxis, 'magma of imaginary significations' communities collectively create via world institutions. Necessary differentiation: Castoriadis maintains focus on collective consciousness and institutions as self-defining totalities: societies instituting themselves via continuous imaginary creations. Our ontological position rejects collective consciousness and self-instituting totality anchors: what matters is non-social groups consciously creating new meanings via shared deliberations (occurring, yet un-structurally necessary), but new regime inscriptions functioning because touching real excess prior regimes failed to process, independent of collective consciousness. Women become political subjects because inscribing possibilities finds anchors in material facts: women exist, work, think, produce, suffer specific constraints prior regimes failed to name or process, ontological imagination inscribing women as subjects requires non-collective voluntary consciousness of 'peoples' re-constituting. Frequently minority, clandestine, executed by intellectuals regimes treat as criminals until inscriptions disseminate via re-organising material practices without preceding institution authorisation.

2.3. Rigour Criterion: Anchorage in Real Excess, Not in Desire

Frequent accusations against ontological imagination claim it opens indiscriminate paths to utopia: elevating desired fantasies to rigorous material operation levels. Accusations carry legitimate concerns regarding relativism; responses deny not risks, but articulate criteria distinguishing genuine ontological imagination from un-anchored desiring projections.

Ontological imagination operates on real excess over prevailing regimes. Excess is verifiable in principle (documenting anomalies), determined by specific present conditions (non-generic, current material context). Non-what subjects desire; what reality contains as un-updated re-organisation pressure. Classical utopias, ideal society narratives, historical redemption projects, necessary end promises history fulfils, inscribe operational fields desire produces in excess of real conditions. Fragile anchors: depending on wills believing material reality conforms to psychic desire. Marxian communism contained utopian dimensions proclaiming necessary history ends; Marxian ontological imagination lies in capitalist production mode diagnoses, non-final superation promises. Ontological imagination possesses strictly material anchors: depending on reality offering possibilities, containing excess, inventions attempt to inscribe.

Ontological imagination rigour criteria are threefold: coherence, potency, anchorage. First, internal coherence: new regimes process themselves without flagrant performative contradictions. Constitutions proclaiming equality while institutionalising permanent hierarchies (women un-voting, slaves non-persons) fail internal coherence; constitutions opening genuine equality disputes achieve operative coherence processing internal contradictions. Coherence means non-elimination of conflict or unanimity; meaning regimes operate during contestation, holding internal mechanisms processing disagreement without immediate collapse. Second, re-organisation potency: new regimes re-organise thought, practice, institutions, non-nice paper lacking operation. Theories changing nothing in scientific operations (producing no new questions, un-reorienting research) lack potency; theories permitting un-expressible questions (how light behaves in curved space) and obtaining answers via investigation (Eddington 1919 solar light deflection experiment) possess verifiable potency. Potency measures non-guaranteed success but operational field re-organisation capacity: un-askable questions become central research-structuring questions. Third, real excess anchorage: concrete items in reality prior regimes failed to process, new inscriptions manage to inscribe. Non-Euclidean geometry was non-fantasy: real spaces existed (Earth curvature, space-time) Euclidean geometry failed to describe, mathematicians felt pressure without articulating within Euclidean frames.

Differences between rigorous invention and utopian daydreaming lie here. Both inscribe non-sensibly given present actualities. Invention operates on what reality contains as documentable material pressure: experimental anomalies resisting prior schemes, groups whose existence belies legal categories, phenomena behaving contrary to explicit theoretical expectations. Daydreaming lacks material anchorage; operating on psychic desires divorced from present concrete conditions, material reality may never realise. What prevailing regimes declare impossible, 'economically impossible', 'politically impossible', 'naturally impossible', may hold true for regime tools, false for reality permissions. Slavery abolition appeared economically impossible because slave regimes lacked tools imagining non-forced-labour accumulation; reality offered possibilities (post-abolition economies demonstrated). Utopian theoretical structures appear beautiful, internally coherent, seductive; lacking real excess anchorage, practical implementation reveals few internal operational validation criteria: systems disintegrate.

Ontological imagination validation is necessarily posterior to inscription, non-prior, radical differences with classical science seeking advance validation. Un-confirmable before creating instruments whether attempted inscriptions are relative impossibles (inventions cross) or absolute impossibles (no invention crosses, fundamentally resisting). Retroactivity is no defect; condition of risk all genuine inventions face. Non-Euclidean geometry was un-validated in advance by mathematical communities; created (Gauss, Lobachevsky, Bolyai, Riemann, 19th century), painstakingly verified as internally coherent, rendering intelligible spaces (curvature) Euclidean geometry treated as contradictory. Abolitionist law was un-validated by a priori arguments before application; inscribed in specific contexts (Saint-Domingue 1791–1804, Brazil 1888), verified subsequently managing human production relation re-organisations without predicted economic apocalypses, slave abolition was economically impossible. Both cases show: new regime-creating inventions carry intrinsic validations operating on reality pressures; questions remain whether stabilising post-creation.

Real excess anchorage criteria block identifying ontological imagination with pure relativism, ideology claiming any inscription holds because all are constructions. Not everything is inscribable at any moment; not all inventions function lacking real excess anchorage. Reality fundamentally resists. Inscriptions systematically conflicting with processed materiality, denying death as life constitutive properties, denying material scarcity under finite resources, denying physical limits under energy constraints, enter progressive collapse. Sustainable political regimes stem non-from reality-denying capabilities in ideology names, but practical response re-organisation capacities to material reality, integrating reality pressure into operations.

Leninist and Stalinist communism attempting to deny real differential economic motivations agents hold, retaining labour value, accumulating, material differentiation, failed non-from immoral equality vision ambitions, but deliberately closing eyes to real excess regimes could not ignore indefinitely. Price controls hiding goods from markets eliminate not scarcity; redistributing it. Private property abolition via terror eliminates not appropriation desires; re-organising as hidden corruption and resistance. Invalidating non-equality projects (real excess prior regimes failed to process); invalidating particular inscriptions ignoring fundamental material human motivation limits. Utopia fails non-when inscribing relative impossibles, but confusing them with absolute impossibles, treating as transcendable what is intransponable.

Conversely, inscriptions operating while respecting material limits prove durable. Slavery abolition functioned un-denying human labour needs, re-organising compensation terms: ceasing absolute labour-person property, becoming compensated exchange (wages, rights). Democracy functions un-denying interest conflicts, institutionalising forms where multiple voices dispute without single total domination. Science advances un-denying material limits of knowable items, re-organising access instruments, accepting new excess exists, knowledge is provisional, answers open new questions.

Absolute versus relative impossible distinctions are what Simondon articulates between logical contradictions (impossible by principle) and material divergences (impossible under current material regimes, non-absolutely). Machines violating energy conservation principles are absolute impossibles, non-better inscription issues, fundamental physical reality structure violations. 17th-century technically impossible machines (Babbage difference engines for automatic calculation) were relatively impossible: precision gear manufacturing technology existed not, principle mechanically viable. Simondon shows technical individuation processes do this: finding in available materials conditions rendering prior impossible structures possible in new structures. Mandatory differentiation: Simondon locates individuation in technical subjects or learning processes rendering technicians skilled: workers learning wood, engineers resolving structural stability. Our position rejects learning/changing subject anchors: technical inscriptions function because finding in material reality (iron resonance, air fluid dynamics, electromagnetic signal propagation) what renders operationally real prior relative impossibles. Technical subjects are material operation conditions, non-origins or learning loci.

2.4. Constitutive Operators: Symbol, Model, Constitution, Aesthetic Creation

Ontological imagination is no single phenomenon or isolated event; operating across materially specific domains, each with techniques and criteria, sharing fundamental structures of inscribing as operationally real what prior regimes rendered un-apprehensible. Examining operators is non-cataloguing dispersed applications; demonstrating ontological imagination as material, technically specific operations per domain, functionally unified in deep structures. The symbol, examined as general operations, takes crystallised forms in specific domains, each with proper density.

In scientific domains, symbols become models: formal structures (mathematical, logical, symbolic) representing un-observed or in-principle-observable states and un-controlled variable relations. Scientific models describe not reality as is; constructing operative representations permitting symbolic work on un-updated empirical items. Maxwell equations are non-electromagnetic fields; instruments calculating charged particle trajectories, predicting new regime behaviours, re-organising experimentation. Models function through internal coherence (un-contradicting equations), producing verifiable predictions where opacity existed, opening legibility domains prior theories hid. Model transitions, Newtonian mechanics to general relativity, are non-discoveries of hidden truths; inscriptions of new intelligibility regimes rendering visible (legible, operable) reality properties systematic prior structures rendered invisible via axioms.

In political domains, symbols become constitutions: normative inscriptions establishing fields for legitimate collective political action. Constitutions describe not existing political states (becoming obsolete in hours); inscribing as operationally real rule of law un-existing states people and institutions reference to act, contest, demand compliance. Rule of law exists as normative horizons, real operation fields, before effective state of affairs exist. Constitutions function through practice re-organisations (jurists arguing against governments using constitutions; citizens claiming rights violations; politicians constrained to respond) un-establishing prior independent truth on political modes. Fields where genuine political disputes occur, multiple interpretations coexist, non-transcendent truth ending disputes.

In technical domains, symbols become prototypes then machines: material inscriptions experimenting theoretical operations in the present, testing durable functioning stabilisation. Prototypes are non-final objects or standardised production series; testing theoretical inscriptions before generalising reproducible forms. Wright brothers' 1903 Kill Devil Hills airplane prototype inscribed controlled flight capacity un-updated in machines, described in lift, drag, material resistance equations. Prototypes function re-organising concrete materials (wood, canvas, light frames) under laws ontological imagination identified in equations, before mass production machines exist, non-theoretical speculation but material proof. Prototypes fail frequently (many flying machines died before Wright brothers, non-cowardice but inadequate inscription); testing before generalising, posterior validation methods assuming and measuring risk. Simondon showed technical machines arise non-applying science to matter, but individuation processes where ontological imagination (what machines do) encounters material excess (what materials offer under constraint) producing operative syntheses. Mandatory differentiation: Simondon locates processes in subjects (engineers, technicians, workers) executing individuation via material interactions. Our position rejects subject locations: technical inscriptions, prototyping as material operations, are ontological imagination, technical subjects are executors, material operation conditions, non-origins.

In artistic spheres, symbols become new forms: inscriptions re-organising sensible fields, creating visual, auditory, tactile legibility regimes un-stabilised as communicable possibilities. Artworks represent non-pre-existing beauty as Platonic essences copied faithfully; creating aesthetic possibility fields where beauty (or conscious negation, surrealism, rejection vanguards) emerges as material operations in reality. Picasso's cubist paintings illustrate non-perspective multiplicity (academic representation); inscribing as operationally real new viewing modes where multiple perspectives cease logical contradiction (un-seeing two solid object sides simultaneously), becoming image structures. Works function through re-organising live perception, observers see anew after prolonged painting contact, opening new sensible intelligibility regimes where chaotic-seeming, visually un-integrable form configurations become legible coherent compositions.

Picasso's artistic innovations are non-properties of artist genius consciousnesses, inscription operations touching real sensible experience excess academic painting left impassable. Subjects viewing objects move eyes, circle, see multiple aspects simultaneously in visual memory; academic painting attempted un-integrating into single stable images, fixed single perspectives. Cubism inscribes as legible precisely what live vision contains as multiplicity: letting canvas planes process multiple perspectives without resolving into illusory unity, maintaining vision as continuous re-ordering operations. Paintings function doing work prior painting failed, communicating un-reduced multiple vision experiences, honouring what perceptual reality offered as impassable pressure in prior regimes. Art is non-exception to rigorous thought or imaginative license spaces; spheres where general ontological imagination principles become visible through un-obligated operation dissimulation, no pre-existing beauty discovery pretences, pure creation of new regimes. Yet, dissolving paradoxes, pure creation is rigorous creation touching visceral materiality: how human eyes process form, bodies feel proportion, attention movements re-organise sight.

These four operators, cognitive symbols, scientific models, political constitutions, aesthetic forms, are non-randomly dispersed instances. Inscribing what is un-sensibly given as immediate present, transforming into real operation fields where work occurs. Operating with domain-specific internal rigour criteria: formal coherence in sciences, institutional coherence in politics, perceptual coherence in art. Carrying posterior (non-anticipated) validation: proving functionality in action, re-organising practice, producing durable effects. Producing new relative impossible horizons: constitutions inscribing rights prompt new execution questions and normative-reality contradictions; models ordering anomalies reveal new excess categories fail to capture; works opening aesthetic regimes create new non-conformity, criticism, rejection possibilities, maintaining live fields.

What matters: ontological imagination is non-exclusive to designated creative domains (art, music, literature) while others remain pure of imagination (positive science, mechanical technique, rational politics). Divisions repeat philosophical errors fought here. Genuine science, advancing science, is ontological imagination as much as art. Genuine politics, transforming politics, is ontological imagination as much as poetry. Innovative techniques, resolving previously intractable problems, are ontological imagination. Distinguishing domains is specific inscribed item nature (formal, normative, perceptual) and internal applied criteria (mathematical, legal, aesthetic), non-presence/absence of ontological imagination operations. All genuine change across domains beyond present management demands ontological imagination: inscribing as operationally real, work fields, items prior regimes rendered un-formulable.

Radical political and material consequences follow for collective invention, transformation capacity, power distribution. If genuine invention, political, scientific, artistic, technical, depends on ontological imagination as fundamental operations, capacity to imagine, inscribing as operational real fields what prior regimes failed to capture, is fundamentally political. Non-private property of creative elites possessing 'gifts' or 'genius'; non-monopolies of special subjects designated artists, thinkers, inventors. Operations any sufficiently complex language community with mnemonic structures executes, any human group deliberating, proposing executes. Yet radically fragile operations destroyed, contracted, confiscated.

When material conditions permitting ontological imagination deteriorate or suffer systematic destruction, coercively closing symbolic fields via censorship, violently simplifying language via legal/educational decrees, killing reflection time via continuous work exhaustion, outlawing assemblies where collective thought occurs, ontological imagination contracts drastically. Non-psychological metaphors. Material diagnosis: despotic regimes closing libraries, outlawing publications, imposing single languages, preventing assemblies, forcing incessant work, systemically destroy technical conditions where ontological imagination functions. Politics reduces to present management, collective invention ceases, reality-pressed possibilities remain inscribable only for those keeping hidden, protected symbolic fields un-policed by regimes, clandestine intellectuals, hidden communities, secret inscriptions.

Politics recognising ontological imagination as fundamental capacity (non-privileges) protects material conditions where imagination operates: reflection time, multiple language access, assembly spaces, collective memory/archive protections, text/idea circulations. Non-abstract liberal free speech ideals; material diagnoses that lacking concrete conditions, peoples' invention capacities, inscribing new political possibility fields, are destroyed. Tyrants burning libraries, outlawing debate, killing intellectuals are non-merely morally repressive; technically destroying collective invention capacity. Apparently dis-proportionate totalising regime gestures against culture, language, thought institutions are logically necessary: eliminating material conditions where ontological imagination operationalises permanently closes genuine political possibility horizons.

3. The Fold of Thought and the Relative Impossible

3.1. The Fold of Thought: Material Re-Configuration of the Inscription Regime

When thought encounters its limits, what is the precise structure of that encounter? Non-metaphorical: material and topological. A fold is non-abandonment of prevailing regimes nor jumping outside; internal re-configuration, movements turning inscription surfaces back upon points offering resistance. Operations defining genuine thought.

Prevailing political orders are inscription regimes, defining recognisable political actors, articulable interests, absorbable system transformations, power-relation-structuring principles. Orders are non-natural social matter laws. Historical creations: symbolic institutional constructions imposed via force, tradition, habit, consolidated interest. Inscriptions alterable. Legibility regimes re-configurable. Re-configurations occur non-via well-intentioned subject decisions: forced when reality accumulates excess regimes fail to process.

Situations, groups, demands exist prevailing orders fail to inscribe. Enslaved persons whose humanity law declares property. Women whose political agency law un-recognises. Colonised peoples whose existence institutions reduce to exploitation objects. Workers whose survival needs fail articulation in rights language. Accumulated excess: existing, acting, effect-producing reality legibility regimes declare impossible as political subjects. Regimes deny not enslaved existence; declaring personhood impossible. Denying not women existence; declaring citizenship impossible. Impossibility is regime effect, non-reality effect.

Moments where genuine political invention occurs. Non-linear progressions toward final justice states, historical promises dissolved. Folds of prevailing orders: radical regime re-configurations creating new inscription spaces where invisible items become operationally legible. Abolition discovered not enslaved humanity, existing from beginning. Abolition inscribed it, creating new legal regimes where human property categories cease sense, expanding personhood to include excluded groups. Re-configuring legibility fields.

Feminism folded existing political orders: creating new regimes where women become political subjects, speaking, legally responsible, participating in collective decisions. Non-because women acquired un-possessed capacities, operating silently, in margins, in un-controlled regime spaces. Folds inscribed capacities as operationally real within regimes. Decolonisation folded imperial orders: creating new regimes where colonised cease being administered objects, becoming recognised sovereign peoples. Ecologist movements fold anthropocentric orders: attempting new regimes where nature, animals, rivers hold recognised political agency, non-extensions of human concerns, rights-holders in own right. Each fold resolves relative impossibles of eras; each fold creates new impossibles emerging regimes fail to capture completely. Which group existence do new regimes leave invisible? What reality persists outside legibility fields political orders inscribe?

Castoriadis identified structures as social imaginary institutions: collective meaning creations instituting society as operating reality, non-mere material condition reflections. Social imaginaries for Castoriadis are radical creations, ex nihilo, psyche irruptions as new form sources. Our position converges in identifying operations, new regimes emerge as collective creations, meaning institutions un-existing prior, refusing ex nihilo foundations. Political folds inscribe non-unreferenced creations. Updating excess prior orders pressured. Enslaved humanity is non-abolitionist invention; reality slaveholding regimes denied by inscribing humans exclusively. Political invention inscribes what reality bears as un-updated re-organisation pressure. Political folds create not humanity. Re-organising regimes so human operations become inscribable as legitimate political categories.

Precise, operatory distinctions. Castoriadis invites ex nihilo creations placing new inscription sources in human psyches as irreducible power. Our position maintains creation, folds are genuine new regime creations, refusing un-anchored creation. New items anchor in reality-offered excess, left opaque by prior regimes. Transforming politics. Genuine political invention is non-unlimited power recreating reality via desire. Constrained by resisting reality. Inscriptions in flagrant contradiction with material reality collapse. Political orders completely denying human life finitude, food needs, death reality, body limits, collapse inevitably because denied reality pressures regimes. Communism denying real economic motivations, material interest dimensions driving action, failed because distortedly inscribed reality, neglected reality, accumulated excess regimes failed to process. Ontological political imagination grounds in real creativity, non-desiring affirmation. Distinguishing genuine invention from pure desiring statements.

Stated otherwise: political folds are work, prolonged, collective, arduous. Non-decrees or naming acting via word power. Slow production of new inscription instruments: new legal concepts, institutions, social practices rendering inscribable what prior regimes left opaque. Abolition movements proclaimed not freedom, working centuries creating legal, economic, cultural regimes where slavery ceased sense. Feminism un-simply 'recognised' equality, building institutions, concrete struggles, relation re-organisations rendering structural inequality insupportable. Decolonisation was non-magnanimous metropolitan gesture; pressure, resistance, constructing new sovereignty concepts imperial regimes recognised to survive. Folds are materially sustained operations: non-changing thought, re-organising institutions, practices, bodies.

Concrete political operations mean change is non-decreed. Sovereigns cannot proclaim enslaved people are persons expecting orders to re-organise via word power. Change demands material transformation of supporting institutions: economic structures based on slavery, legal practices legitimating it, cultural habits naturalising it. Century-long work. Abolition movements in Anglophone worlds lasted two hundred years from initial protests to effective abolition. Two hundred years of pressure, agitation, slow institution re-organisations. Two hundred years because slave-inscribing regimes rooted deeply in economies, laws, cultures. Political folds are non-instantaneous. Encountering step-by-step resistance through consolidated regime interests.

Political folds are possible despite resistance because reality offered what was denied. Enslaved individuals possessed intelligence, dignity, thought capacity, decision, responsibility, personhood possessions law inserted into categories, slave regimes refused to recognise. Reality pressured, through enslaved existence and operating humanity, against institutional denials. Political folds leveraged pressure: organising, visibilising, directing against regimes. Abolition movements created not enslaved humanity, operating through revolts, escapes, refusals. Inscribing humanity into new legal, political, economic regimes.

Same structures appear in all genuine political folds. Reality excess exists regimes fail to process: moments arrive where excess pressures force order re-configurations or collapse. Feminism operates on women's operating capacity, existing operating in margins, silently, in patriarchal regime interstices. Regimes created not capacity; interdicting as politically invisible. Feminist folds inscribe as operationally real in political fields. Decolonisation operates on colonised peoples' political capacity, suppressed, un-eliminated. Peoples possess self-government capacity, self-knowledge, organisation possibilities. Colonial regimes needed violence keeping peoples from political recognition. Critical pressure points (independence wars, liberation movements) rendered political folds unavoidable. Regimes recognised as sovereign what was denied capacity.

Clarifying genuine political invention: non-invention from nothing (ex nihilo), but invention of new regimes processing what prior regimes rendered impossible. Women participating in politics are non-feminist inventions, women existed, acted always. Feminism invents new inscription regimes where presence and action become legitimate, visible, operationally real. Crucial displacement: genuine politics is non-reality escape, non-idealism imposition on resisting matter, but recognising capacities prior orders systematically denied. Political folds are non-heroic gestures creating impossible capacities. Obstinate gestures inscribing real capacities prior regimes interdicted. Political folds carry material limits: un-inscribing un-offered reality capacities. Orders attempting to inscribe non-material capacity, death, absence, non-being, collapse due to reality offering limitation, non-possibility. Genuine political limits match inscribable real limits.

Aphorism: Politics is the gesture of folding a regime when reality ceases to fit into what it can inscribe.

3.2. Absolute Impossible vs. Relative Impossible

Two radically distinct impossibles exist; confusion originates inadequate political invention comprehensions. Distinguishing clarifies inscribable political possibilities and limits. Dangerous political errors treat relative impossibles as absolute, closing political fields, rendering transformation unthinkable, converting regime limits into reality limits. Opposite errors are equally dangerous: treating absolute impossibles as relative, inviting actions in unsustainable contradiction with reality, ending in collapse, causing suffering in un-sustainable promise names. Distinctions are political life-or-death issues.

Absolute impossibles are reality properties, non-regime effects. Violating known physical laws or formal logic, un-convertible by symbolic regime re-configurations. Round squares are logical impossibles, impossibility stems from formal contradiction structures no political gesture dissolves. Absolute physical impossibles, reality properties intransponable, share orders: limits inscription regimes approximate, un-converting into possible. Knowing which regime-classified impossibles are absolute versus relative remains open, rendering distinctions relevant.

Relative impossibles are regime effects. Reality excess over prevailing inscription capacities: existing materially, acting, producing effects, yet regimes lack capture, representation, operation instruments. Impossible non-because material existence fails; impossible because symbolic regimes know not how to inscribe. Non-Euclidean geometry was impossible in Euclidean regimes, non-because curved space existed not (curvature operated in reality), but prevailing geometric regimes lacked axioms, symbols, operation grammars to inscribe. Gauss, Lobachevsky, Riemann creating instruments, relative impossibles converted into new possible fields, rendering classifying regimes obsolete.

Most political impossibilities blocking invention are relative impossibles disguised as absolute. 'Cannot' abolish slavery, regimes process not enslaved humanity because economic institutions base on denial. Impossibilities declared natural law, reality properties un-functioning without slavery. Slavery collapsed when other regimes inscribed replacement, creating economic, legal, social instruments rendering human property obsolete. Impossibilities were regime effects, non-reality. 'Cannot' recognise women as full citizens, regimes process not female political agency due to hierarchical structures based on denial. Relative impossibles disguised as absolute. Gender inequality persists, non-as inscription impossibility, internal tension in regimes proclaiming equality while denying in practice.

Criteria distinguishing relative from absolute impossibles are retroactive, successful conversion of impossible into possible reveals relativity. Prior to conversion, relative and absolute impossibles are indistinguishable: appearing within regimes as un-doable, un-thinkable, un-inscribable. Inventors know not in advance whether attempted inscriptions are relative impossibles conversion will achieve, or absolutes un-crossable. Acting on relative hypotheses, risking error. Risk condition of genuine invention: lacking prior guarantees. Political gestures inscribing relative impossibles are bets, non-deductions. Lacking guarantees renders them genuine.

Consequences: treating relative impossibles as absolute closes invention fields: converting regime limits into reality limits, rendering political transformation unthinkable. Recognising relative impossibles as regime effects opens fields: impossible means un-known to inscribe. Un-known inscriptions learnable, producing necessary instruments. Non-relativism (anything works). Materialist recognition: reality limits are real, regime limits are non-necessarily reality limits.

Political inscriptions carry internal rigour criteria no less demanding than scientific rigour, more demanding, operating under permanent uncertainty. Three dimensions: coherence, potency, real anchorage. Coherence: processing without flagrant internal contradictions, non-nice text lacking operational capacity. Potency: re-organising action, institution, practice, non-verbal narratives. Abolition re-organised economic relations; feminism re-configured political space; decolonisation transferred sovereignty. Anchorage: rooted in real excess prior regimes left opaque. Bodies, lives, presences exist prior regimes failed to capture. New regimes function treating as real what prior treated as impossible.

Retroactive distinction character holds political implications: no regime predicts internally its own limits. No regime knows in advance challenging excess because excess is what regimes fail to code. Euclidean regimes failed thinking other geometries possible, non-lacking mathematician intelligence, but axiomatic structures rendering invisible what was un-inscribable. For Euclidean regimes, space curvature was un-ignored, literally unthinkable as geometric possibilities. Non-Euclidean geometry discoveries were genuine surprises, non-deductions from known principles. Regimes predict not own limits.

Structural blindness occurs in all political regimes. Slaveholding orders imagined not economically viable alternatives to slavery because logic rested on non-existence assumptions. Colonial regimes imagined not colonised sovereignty because power structures rested on denying political capacity. Patriarchy imagines not social organisations with women as genuine political power because foundations rest on denial. Regimes possess constitutive blind spots: points where inscriptions encounter un-processable resistance.

Genuine political invention carries betting structures. Change comes non-from within regimes, regimes generate not self-transformations, failing to conceive needed transformations. Change comes from outside, excess regimes fail to inscribe accumulating pressure forcing re-configuration. Social movements embodying excess know not in advance whether converting relative impossibles into new possibles, or encountering absolute impossibles no inscription crosses. Acting on relative hypotheses, risking error. Betting against prevailing regimes, logic, installed power.

Distinguishing relative impossibles from improbable items: conversions demand radical regime re-configurations, non-extraordinary effort within. Women studying despite discrimination, extraordinary. Women as prime ministers, regime re-configuration. People surviving slavery, extraordinary. Enslaved persons' political rights recognised, regime re-configuration. Second-order transformations belong to political fold domains. Distinctions between relative and absolute impossibles are non-theoretical; determining whether politics possesses futures or transformations are unthinkable.

Aphorism: The relative impossible is the name a regime gives to the excess it cannot yet inscribe, not a property of reality that remains intransponable.

3.3. The Inscription of the Relative Impossible as a Political Gesture

What occurs when political orders encounter points where inscriptions collapse? Accumulated excess, invisible groups, un-articulable demands, reality-denying regimes, reaches pressure rendering regime reproduction impossible. Genuine political gestures are what Castoriadis designates radical imaginary institutions: creating new meanings re-ordering operating social reality, non-deducing given principles.

Creation is non-ex nihilo, as Castoriadis proposes. Updating. Reality holds capacities, presences, possibilities regimes fail to process. Genuine political inscriptions treat as operationally real what was declared impossible. Abolition inscribes enslaved persons as human, non-because personhood was born with abolition, but law operated denying enslaved persons, political folds reconverge fields including previously excluded. Feminism inscribes women as political subjects, non-because women acquired thought capacities with movements, but prior political regimes interdicted visibility, new regimes render visible as legitimate operators.

Political gestures inscribing relative impossibles carry analogous structures: (1) reality offered what prior regimes failed to capture; (2) pressure accumulates when inscription incapacity becomes insupportable; (3) political movements create new regimes where un-inscribable items become inscribable. Abolition created new legal regimes. Feminism created new political regimes. Decolonisation created new sovereignty regimes. Each was prolonged, collective, arduous work, non-proclamations. Constructing new inscription instruments rendering operable what prior regimes interdicted.

No genuine politics exists without ontological imagination. Politics managing existing regimes is administration, non-invention. Politics defending regimes against challenges is repression, non-transformation. Genuine political invention is folding, re-configuring regimes encountering un-captured inscription apparatuses. Precisely what Castoriadis identified: politics as new meaning creations instituting new reality. Difference: creation anchors in reality-offered excess, non-un-constrained psychic power recreating without limits. Reality resists. Inescapable ontological limits.

Imaginary social institutions, as Castoriadis designates, are operations symbolic regimes perform encountering limits. What Castoriadis calls ex nihilo creation is better understood as updating reality-contained possibilities. Emerging new regimes are non-creations from vacuums; operations treating as operationally real what prior regimes left invisible. Abolition created not enslaved humanity ex nihilo, creating new legibility fields where humanity, always existing, became politically inscribable. Feminism created not women's political capacity, re-organising regimes so interstitial operating capacities became visible as legitimate politics. Decolonisation created not colonised peoples' sovereignty, inscribing as operationally real what colonial regimes denied. In each case, 'creation' is new regime creation, non-creation of what regimes inscribe.

Limits convert relative impossible inscriptions into consequential gestures, non-pure desires. Inscriptions in systemic contradiction with processed reality collapse. Orders completely denying human finitude collapse when finitude persists. Orders ignoring material needs collapse when needs impose. Orders treating nature as infinite collapse when finitude reveals. Denied reality in regimes overthrows them, non-immediately, but inevitably at critical pressure points. Ecology, recognising real material limits, functions where unlimited anthropocentrism enters crisis.

Inscribing relative impossibles as genuine operations demands extreme rigour: selecting well what to inscribe, ensuring real excess anchorage, new regime internal coherence, producing effective re-organisation potency. Portuguese democracy opening to enslaved people and women was non-magnanimous, accumulated pressure, resistance, painful recognition prior regimes failed against denied excess. Steps demanded work: documenting women's political capacity, organising, building institutions, confronting power. Emerging new regimes are non-guaranteed durable, reversible, destroyable if supporting structures destroy. While persisting, inscribing as operationally real what prior regimes interdicted. Qualifying relative impossible inscriptions as genuine: processing without self-contradiction excess prior regimes left pressing. Genuine inscriptions answer un-integrated excess demands, re-organising institutions to function under new logics. Abolitionist law processes free labour, re-organises economies, functions despite resistance. Feminist law processes women's political presence, re-organises collective decisions. Ecological law processes material limits, re-organises resource usage. Non-without contradictions or internal tensions, all inscriptions carry new relative impossibles that will pressure. Functioning because rooted in reality offering excess. Inscriptions processing against denied reality, operating despite ignored materiality, fail genuine status: collapsing at critical pressure points.

Inscribing relative impossibles as genuine political operations demands rigour: selecting well what to inscribe, ensuring real excess anchorage, new regime internal coherence, producing effective re-organisation potency. Validation is posterior, post-gesture verification shows whether new inscriptions function without unsustainable contradictions. Retroactivity is no defect. Condition of possibility for genuine invention. Invention is un-validatable in advance. Taking betting forms on hypotheses that impossibles are relative, non-absolute.

Retroactive validation means non-criterion abandonment. Precise differences exist between genuine political inventions, rooted in real excess, and utopias, projecting produced desires beyond constraints onto reality. Abolition was possible due to enslaved labour, wisdom, agency regimes needed to capture, real excess trapped in regimes. Feminism was possible due to women's intelligence, strength, decision capacity regimes needed to inscribe, real excess trapped. Decolonisation was possible due to peoples' political organisation capacities imperial regimes denied, real excess trapped. Emerging new regimes were non-un-anchored fantasies. Processing what prior regimes left invisible through new instruments.

By contrast, utopias imagining societies liberated from material necessity, humans un-needing food, sleep, ageing bodies, project produced desires onto reality un-anchored in reality-offered excess. Genuine inventions respect reality-offered limits: re-organising institutions, inscribing new possibility fields, un-denying material reality. Politics denying death, finitude, corporeality, limits collapse when denied reality persists. 20th-century communism failed partly attempting to deny real economic motivations, material interest dimensions driving action. Regimes inscribed against reality-offered excess, rather than processing excess. Critical pressure points collapsed regimes non-because communism was absolute impossible (systems exist where common property functions), but particular communist inscriptions operated against denied reality.

Aphorism: What the political order declares impossible is frequently its own limit as a regime, not the limit of reality.

3.4. Closure: Imagination as a Condition of All Invention

Inventing reason is ontologically imagining reason. Propositions congregating three movement sections ending here: invention as material creativity (Section 1), decision as non-guaranteed responsibility assumption (Section 2), imagination as relative impossible inscription (Section 3). Co-implicating, mutually dependent operations. No material invention exists without imagining the non-existent. No responsible decision exists without re-configuring regimes when effects reveal inadequacy, folding. No ontological imagination exists without rooting in material invention offering excess to inscribe.

Volume IX developed genuine politics demanding ontological imagination, capacity inscribing as operationally real what prevailing orders declare impossible. Capacity non-exclusive to illuminated subjects. Properties of sufficiently complex symbolic systems encountering limits. Political movements inscribing the new, abolition, feminism, decolonisation, ecology, are operations where ontological imagination becomes visible re-configuring political legibility fields. Scientists imagining new experimental apparatuses inscribe prior scientific regime relative impossibles. Jurists creating new law inscribe prior law relative impossibles. Operations identical: inscribing as operability fields what prior regimes interdicted as impossible.

Fundamentally shifting what political possibility means. If genuine politics depends on ontological imagination, and ontological imagination is relative impossible inscription, politics is possible precisely because reality excess over regimes attempting inscription always exists. No perfect regime exists, completely capturing existence. Margins remain, excess remains, opacity remains pressing regime re-configurations. Politics ends not, no final history ends exist, history being sequence of relative impossible conversions into new possible fields, conversions creating new relative impossibles emerging regimes encounter.

Understood thus, politics is radically immanent operation. Non-external, non-decreed, non-transcendent will expression. Material reality properties: complex symbolic regimes encountering un-processable excess, relative impossible inscription possibilities become operative. Non-political romanticism, recognising how genuine change occurs. Occurring non-via power-holder benevolence. Occurring when accumulated excess forces re-configuration. Resisting regimes die. Regimes absorbing excess in new inscriptions persist, until encountering next relative impossibles. History is no march toward final liberation. Sequence of conversions, each producing new impossible horizons.

Politics carries risk and cost. Relative impossible inscriptions are non-battle-free operations. Established regimes hold maintenance interests, consolidated power, order-gaining beneficiaries, naturalising reproducing structures. Excess pressing regime re-configurations meets resistance from prior regime gainers. New regime inscriptions encounter violence, symbolic and material, institutional. Slaveholders resisted abolition fiercely. Patriarchs resist feminism via violence against women. Colonialists resist decolonisation via war. Political folds are non-benign evolutions. Conflicts where denied excess pressures against established power, outcomes uncertain. Failed conversions occur, repressed movements, defeated insurrections. History records non-only successful conversions; millions of attempts left no durable traces. Politics is an operation capable of failure. Relative impossible inscription possibilities are real, realisation un-guaranteed.

No promises. No guarantees conversions accumulate progressively. History advances not, converting, regressing at times. Established inscriptions suffer destruction. Reached regimes suffer dismantlement. Alexandria's library, inscription instrument concentration, was destroyed, converted relative impossibles returned to impossibles for subsequent regimes. Until instruments reconstructed. Ontological imagination enabling genuine politics is non-fixed data. Conquests lost.

Horizon opening question Field II will develop un-answered in advance: How does material regimes lacking inscription capacity, pre-symbolic, pre-political reality under pure constraint, generate own legibility conditions? How does ontological imagination become possible? What is universe inscription history? How arrived at states where symbolic regimes exist, folding upon themselves?

Question non-retrospective only. Illuminating present politics. If genuine politics depends on ontological imagination, ontological imagination is relative impossible inscription, how inscription becomes possible in non-symbolic reality governs political comprehension. Political orders achieve non-spontaneous transformation, needing pressure, un-inscribable excess. Where stems pressure? How living beings pressure regimes denying humanity? How women challenge patriarchy when interdicted from political challenge? How colonised peoples resist when colonial regimes deny organisation capacity? Answers: denied reality persists, operating, acting, producing effects outside denying regimes. Persistence pressures. Reality capacity operating beyond regime-offered inscriptions enables political invention. Deeper question: what reality structures permit operating beyond inscriptions? What capacity has reality exceeding regimes?

Field II confronts this. Tracing inscription emergence, how pure-constraint reality generated inscription-capable beings. Ontological imagination genealogy non-as psychological faculty, but complex material system properties. Answers un-found, open research horizons lacking final terms. Investigating movements frees politics from transcendence. If ontological imagination is non-supernatural gift, non-exceptional human privilege, non-irreducible psychic power, complex material system properties capable of inscribing, politics is immanent reality operation. Non-external, non-decreed, non-transcendent will expression. Operations material reality performs when complexity permits. Placing politics back into reality it should never have left.

Stated otherwise: ontological imagination is what any regime becomes encountering un-inscribable items, responding with re-configuration over refusal. Non-human privilege, operations complex symbolic systems perform. Imagination is inscription. Imaginary is operations folding regimes over pressing excess. Genuine politics imagines, inscribing as operationally real what prior regimes left invisible, interdicted, impossible. Lacking imagination, politics reduces to management or repression. With imagination, politics becomes what it always was: regime material re-configuration operations when exceeding reality fits no longer in regime-offered inscriptions. Complete movement: from relative impossible to new possible, opening new impossible horizons, offering reality opportunities re-organising under new inscription regimes reality forced to emerge.

Dual thesis-aphorism: Imagining is not escaping reality, it is the mode whereby reality learns to work with what is not yet. And imagining ontologically is the gesture that any genuine politics must be.
