Invention Is Not a Luxury

Why invention is a material and political necessity rather than a luxury, from complex matter to collective creation.

1.1. How the Subject Hijacked Creativity

The history of Western philosophy, traced with genealogical rigour, reveals a progressive appropriation: the material process that reality exerts upon itself, what we call invention, was progressively attributed exclusively to the human subject, until genuine creativity came to be defined as that which only the subject can perform. This hijacking is neither an accidental error nor a progressive correction of a misunderstanding; it is a logical coherence spanning centuries, each version refining the previous one. To understand it is to understand why invention became invisible precisely when it was most in plain sight, or rather, why it became visible only when encapsulated within the privilege of exceptional subjects.

Plato formed the architectonic framework that sustained all subsequent tradition and continues to structure much of contemporary theorising on creativity. Creativity is not genuine creation; it is a subordinated participation in an order that transcends it. The artisan shaping pottery does not create: he participates in an eternal order, the Forms. The creativity of this artisan is merely an approximation, a provisional mimicry of something that already exists ontologically, immutable and outside of time. The Demiurge is the one who truly creates, looking upon the Forms while shaping recalcitrant matter. The human artisan is reduced to an intermediary, an executor of that which transcends him. The novelty that emerges, the beauty of the pottery, the utility of the shape, does not stem from the material gesture. It stems from the participation that this gesture permits, from the opening that the artisan manages to create so that the eternal Forms may manifest themselves. The gesture is merely a channel. Creativity is a property of that which never changes. This is the founding movement: to place genuine creativity beyond the reach of the material human being and of material processes in general, lodging it in a realm of eternal Forms where no temporal gesture can reach, where no iteration can alter what is already perfect and complete.

The medieval tradition Christianised this scheme without structurally altering it, merely rehousing it. Creation ex nihilo, producing being where there was no being, bringing into existence that which was not, became the absolute privilege of God. Creating out of nothing is what only the Absolute can do, exercised but once, outside of time, in the founding act of all things. The human being remains a creature, one who is created and who inhabits the time subsequent to creation. Human creativity is graciously granted, by resemblance to divine nature according to the Genesis narrative, but its source is always external, transcendent, unattainable. In God resides the privilege of genuine creativity; in the human being, imitation, the capacity to re-organise what has already been created, to configure differently the matter provided by God. The Platonic structure was preserved intact, merely relocated: genuine creativity remains beyond the reach of matter, now in divine transcendence rather than eternal Forms. The shift is cosmetic.

Modern empiricism brought the appearance of a profound rupture. Hume and Locke positioned the imagination as the central faculty of human knowledge, as that which truly distinguishes human beings from automata. Yet they strictly denied that the imagination could be radically new, that it could produce that which had never previously been perceived. Imagination is a combination of impressions, those indivisible units arriving from external experience. There is no originary impression in the imagination that does not ultimately derive from external perception. The novelty of imagination is always a re-configuration of elements provided by prior experience. Creative imagination remains structurally subordinate to perception; true creativity, that which produces what was materially impossible before, remains barred to the empirical process.

Descartes offered a rationalist version of the same subordination, with consequences that remain in force today. The imagination is a bodily faculty, dangerously contaminated by sensibility, by the errors that the body imposes upon the pure intellect. Truth, knowledge unsoiled by the illusion of the senses or bodily contamination, resides in clear and distinct ideas that dispense entirely with imagination. The material creativity of the imaginative gesture is, for this very reason, suspect, degraded, treated as deception. Reason, separated from body, gesture, and materiality, is the sole locus where genuine intelligible novelty arises. The hijacking takes Cartesian form with full force: confining creativity to the immaterial domain of reason, establishing a systematic distrust of imagination as a contamination that falsifies truth.

Kant synthesised this entire tradition into a formula that became canonical and still structures much of contemporary theorising on artistic, scientific, political, and social creativity. Genius is the innate mental disposition through which nature gives the rule to art, a formulation demanding meticulous reading. It is not the subject that gives the rule. It is nature that gives it. Yet the channel through which nature exercises this creative capacity is exclusively the subject of genius, in him, and only in him, does nature produce the truly original. For all others, there is imitation, the learning of established rules, the application of criteria formulated by others. For the genius, there is invention in the full sense: the production of new rules that others may subsequently imitate, criteria that posterity will recognise as original. The consequence is logical and devastating: genuine creativity is the property of exceptional subjects. Nature, the general material process lacking a subject, processes occurring without intention, without consciousness, without the privilege of the exceptional human gesture, merely repeats its patterns. Genius computes invention; nature repeats.

This genealogy is not a history of philosophical errors gradually corrected through the progress of thought. It is the history of a deeply coherent logic of appropriation, wherein each iteration refines the former, rendering it more precise, more defensible against objections. Distrust towards matter is systematic across every version: genuine creativity cannot stem from the material process because the material process is conceived as that which necessarily repeats, re-articulating ancient forms into new combinations but never producing true novelty, true novelty that was not virtually contained within prior possibilities. The subject appears as a luminous exception to this inevitable automatism; the one capable of escaping repetition, of bringing into the world something genuinely undetermined beforehand. And the greater the philosophical distrust towards materiality, the more one insists that matter is mere repetitive mechanism, the more brilliant and necessary the position of the exceptional subject becomes as the sole origin of authentic novelty.

Alfred North Whitehead was the philosopher who most systematically resisted this centuries-old legacy, and his resistance warrants examination because it offers both convergences and divergences that clarify what is truly at stake. In Process and Reality, a work that reshaped process ontologies, Whitehead proposed creativity as the ultimate ontological category, that which cannot be explained by anything prior because it is that which explains everything else. The entire universe is a creative process: creativity is not a property of conscious beings or thinking subjects, nor is it the privilege of geniuses; it belongs to reality in continuous operation. A convection cell in a heated fluid, a genetic mutation producing a new phenotype, a chemical reaction organising itself into an oscillatory pattern, all these operations manifest what Whitehead calls creativity: the ontologically fundamental process whereby the many become one and the one becomes many, producing genuine novelty through the integration of multiple perspectives and experiences.

The convergence with the stance articulated in this text is immediate and substantive: creativity is a property of reality, not of the privileged subject. Invention is not the exceptional privilege of human genius; it is the mode in which reality operates when it attains sufficient organisational complexity. This thesis shatters the entire genealogy of appropriation extending from Plato to Kant. It opens the radically different possibility of viewing invention as a process perpetually in operation, wherever material organisation reaches certain thresholds of complexity, of excess compatible with form.

Yet the divergence between Whitehead and the present analysis demands rigorous explicit statement, for without it the text dissolves into a second-hand repetition of process philosophy lacking original edge. Whitehead anchors creativity within an ontology of actual occasions as atomic units of process; he attributes an experiential dimension, what he terms prehension or feeling, to every occasion. Creativity is pan-experiential in Whitehead: every moment of process, however infinitesimally simple, every particle vibration, possesses an experiential dimension. Even an elementary particle feels the field in which it is embedded; it has an occasion of experience. This pan-experientialism is what allows Whitehead to ground creativity without a privileged subject: all creativity is, in some sense, subjective; all matter has an experiential dimension.

The present analysis strictly rejects pan-experientialism and the atomisation into actual occasions endowed with prehension, because these rejections are necessary to maintain a robust materialism and prevent a slide into panpsychism. Material invention requires verifiable experience in no sense whatsoever. It operates in material configurations where no experience is present, no intentionality, no 'prehension' of the field. A Bénard convection cell emerging spontaneously from a temperature gradient is a genuine invention, it produces a new order, a structure not deductively derivable from the prior state, emergent properties residing nowhere in isolated components. Yet no experience occurs here in the Whiteheadian sense or in any meaningful sense. The system does not feel the temperature field; it has no experience of anything. It possesses merely sufficient material organisation such that excess compatible with form produces a new configuration. The biodiversity produced by biological evolution over millions of years is not the result of cumulative experiences of organisms that prehended their environment and transmitted that wisdom to subsequent generations; it is the result of blind material iterations that amplified compatibilities through random genetic variation and differential selection. The genetic mutation opening a new phenotype, a new ecological niche, is not the decision of a system experiencing its environment; it is a material operation of DNA replication with variation. Material invention is therefore more radical than Whitehead can articulate, precisely because it requires neither experience nor any form of subjectivity, not even in a speculative or fantastical sense.

What is rejected, with clarity, is the necessity of an anchorage in experience or subjectivity. What is rejected is pan-experientialism as a condition of creativity. What is retained from Whitehead is the refusal of subjective privilege, the insistence that creativity is an operation of reality. What is added is the precision that creativity requires merely sufficient organisation, not experience. It requires only the condition that the system be sufficiently complex for operative excess, the superabundance of compatibilities that the present regime cannot integrate, to find a new form. Experience is one of the forms that invention produced when material excess reached certain thresholds of neurological complexity, differentiation, and plasticity, a rare, special form, but not a foundational one. What we call human creativity, inventive thought, original art, scientific innovation, is a reflexive intensification of material invention through nervous systems capable of recognising their own constitutive tension and deliberately amplifying it through symbolic operations. But it is not the origin of invention. It is an amplification, an intense participation, an intensification of a process that reality already was upon reaching sufficient complexity.

1.2. Invention as a Property of Complex Matter

If invention is not the privilege of the subject, how does it function as a property of reality? What specific material conditions render it possible? What precise criterion distinguishes true invention from mere re-configuration of prior elements, from simple recombination that leaves structural capacities unaltered?

The key concept is that of operative excess. Operative excess is not vague abundance or indeterminate benefit. It is the precise superabundance of compatibilities that the present configuration cannot integrate simultaneously within a single stable regime. It is not chaos, chaos would be the total absence of constraints, pure indeterminacy without possible form. Operative excess is multiple determination with precision: multiple logically coherent resolutions, multiple materially viable paths for the same problem of stabilisation. The system faces not lack, not scarcity, but uncontainable abundance, too many ways of resolving what the present configuration poses as a problem.

Consider a molecule in a solvent under thermal agitation, a concrete example exemplifying the structure. The molecule can acquire multiple energetically possible conformations, different three-dimensional arrangements satisfying all chemical constraints of covalent bonding while differing in the maintenance energy costs of each shape. In principle, all are possible; none violates chemical laws. Which conformation stabilises at a given moment, which three-dimensional structure the molecule assumes, depends upon microscopic variations non-reducible to any deterministic macroscopic law: random collisions with solvent molecules, local temperature fluctuations in the vessel, infinitesimal perturbations impossible to measure with arbitrary precision. The system thus has multiple possible resolutions permanently open, and which one updates is indeterminate, not because physics is fundamentally indeterminate, not because there is volition in the molecule, but because the prior state permits multiple coherent paths, and which one is taken depends upon microscopic information inaccessible to any observer.

A biological system under nutritional pressure faces the same fundamental structure of indeterminacy compatible with constraint. Multiple adaptive strategies are biologically viable: different metabolic pathways extracting energy from distinct sources; different body structures allowing the occupation of distinct ecological niches; different reproductive behaviours maximising generational success under varied circumstances, each coherent with physiological constraints, each materially possible under certain environmental circumstances. Which strategy emerges when the environment shifts is not predetermined by any biological law. It depends upon the microscopic history of embryonic development, upon chance genetic mutations, upon the contingency of which organisms manage to leave sufficient progeny. Operative excess, multiple possible biological paths, multiple resolutions to the problem 'how to live when resources change', is resolved contingently, not through historical necessity or evolutionary teleology.

A social system undergoing severe political crisis likewise confronts multiple possible institutional re-configurations. Representative democracy, concentrated authoritarianism, total state collapse, a federation of autonomous communities, a confederal structure, practical anarchism, each is ontologically viable under specific material and political constraints. Which institutional configuration stabilises is not written into history as a progressive necessity. It depends upon active political struggle, upon contingencies that no historical law or inexorable development determines. Operative excess, multiple political forms compatible with the material constraints of the moment, allows political systems to 'invent' new structures when the prior regime enters saturation and collapse.

What, precisely, is genuine invention? It is a form not deductively derivable from the prior state. This must be exact: it is not a simple rearrangement of elements that already existed in the prior configuration as a possibility. It is a re-articulation conferring new relational capacities upon elements, rendering operative possibilities that were not present before. When simple molecules of hydrogen and oxygen combine into the structure of water, the combination does not merely assemble what was separated; it opens possibilities of solvency, fluidity, and chemical reactions that isolated atoms could never manifest. The emerging liquid possesses universal solvent properties that isolated molecules lacked. When a crystal organises itself from simple atoms, it acquires light refraction properties, ordered reflection, and geometric symmetry that a singular atom does not manifest. These properties were not hidden, virtually present in the atom awaiting revelation; they emerge genuinely from relation.

Ilya Prigogine identified with precision the mechanism through which this operation occurs, via the rigorously specified concept of bifurcation in systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium. When a system, physical, chemical, biological, social, operates far from equilibrium, distant from the stable and inert rest towards which simple thermodynamic laws would pull it, it accumulates excess that the prevailing stabilisation regime cannot process. The system is under permanent pressure. When this excess reaches a specific critical point, the bifurcation point, the system faces multiple possible stable states instead of a single attractor. Which state emerges, which new form stabilises, is not determined by mathematical law. Bifurcation opens a field of real possibilities; which one is selected depends upon imperceptible fluctuations that amplify in cascades until the new regime emerges. A new form emerges not because it was predetermined in a hidden code, nor because an external intelligence imposed it, but because the material structure of the system itself permits genuinely different paths, and which one is taken escapes purely mechanical determinism.

Prigogine's divergence from functionalist reductionisms must be noted precisely, for there are interpretations that distort the concept. Certain thinkers attempt to reduce all biological creativity to 'an open system in material exchange with an external environment', as though novelty were merely the reactive response of an indifferent container to external inputs, as though the system were pure input-output lacking internal operation. Prigogine strictly rejects this. Bifurcation is not an external response to environmental stimulus; it is an internal operation of the system, an endogenous capacity of the organised system to generate multiple possible states. The new emerges because the system itself, under sufficient complexity and pressure far from equilibrium, possesses genuine capacity to generate multiple possible stable states.

What Prigogine rejects, with precision, is naïve functionalism that treats organisms as inert input-output boxes lacking authentic internal operation, lacking autonomy. He rejects the reduction asserting 'if you understand inputs and outputs, you understand the system'. He rejects, too, pure mechanistic determinism denying any structural indeterminacy, which insists that everything was already predetermined from the start by the initial values of particles, and that the appearance of novelty is merely the unveiling of something already contained. Bifurcation is the exact point where creativity ceases to be an isolated attribute of an exceptional subject, a privilege of geniuses or consciousnesses, and reveals itself as a real, genuine, objectively operating property of matter when organised with sufficient complexity. Reality does not derive its creativity from without; reality creates internally when under appropriate pressure.

Yet not every system under pressure manages to respond creatively, to bifurcate into a new state. An additional requirement, complementary to excess, is plasticity: the specific capacity of a system to absorb significant perturbation, re-configure itself internally in a dramatic fashion, and maintain functional integrity throughout a violent transition. Plasticity is not total fluidity without form, that would be complete incapacity of the system to maintain cohesion, sheer dissolution. Plasticity is not rigidity, that would be system death, the inability to change when change is demanded. Plasticity is the capacity for profound deformation while maintaining minimal necessary functioning, an alteration that preserves cohesion and viability. It is the capacity to endure permanent tension without disintegration.

A bacterial cell exemplifies plasticity with clarity. It can alter metabolic pathways when its preferred nutrient disappears, redirect energy flows to different biochemical processes, and remain alive through a radical transition. This is not unlimited flexibility, it cannot abandon its cell membrane without dying immediately; it must maintain an electrochemical gradient across the membrane or collapse; it cannot dispense with some form of metabolism or vanish. Within these non-negotiable constraints, it can re-configure itself radically. It is specific plasticity: deformation while preserving integrity.

A political institution exemplifies plasticity when it can alter procedures significantly while preserving legal legitimacy, absorbing critique and changing without entirely delegitimising itself. It is not total license, it cannot completely abandon the laws that ground it without ceasing to be that institution. It is not rigidity, it cannot remain untouched when the reality it governs changes radically. It manages, within certain limits, to re-configure itself.

Without plasticity, operative excess produces catastrophic rupture and disintegration rather than creative invention. The system breaks completely instead of re-configuring into a new form. A molecule facing multiple possible states that fails to maintain integrity while transitioning between them disintegrates into broken bonds. An organism requiring a radically new metabolic strategy that cannot effect the transition without immediate death collapses. An institution needing significant innovation that fails to retain legitimacy during change falls into anarchy. Plasticity is the precise material condition whereby operative excess becomes a genuine opportunity for invention rather than a threat of catastrophic destruction.

Bénard convection cells exemplify this mechanism with experimental clarity allowing visual conceptualisation. When a fluid is heated uniformly from below, heat transfer is initially laminar, heat ascends by pure molecular conduction, without visible macroscopic flow. Molecules turn, cool, lose energy, but no ordered movement of mass occurs. When temperature reaches a specific critical threshold, the system bifurcates: spontaneous order emerges in the form of hexagonal convective cells. Each cell is a roll of fluid ascending on one side and descending on the other, transporting heat far more efficiently than passive conduction. These cells were not imposed from without, no controller organises them. They were not waiting passively in the fluid to be triggered. They emerge because the prior regime, laminar conduction, cannot process the temperature gradient in an operatively viable manner. Bifurcation opens multiple possible convection patterns; which specific pattern emerges depends upon infinitesimal microscopic perturbations amplifying in cascade. The result is genuinely new order.

The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction offers an even more remarkable example of pure chemical invention: a chemical oscillation producing a non-trivial rhythm that should be impossible. A mixture of reagents, which simple calculations of chemical equilibrium predict should produce a stable final state, produces instead a series of periodic colour oscillations (bright blue, then red, then blue again, then red...) persisting over thousands of cycles, creating rhythm where simple chemistry inscribed none. The system invented periodicity where no periodicity was pre-described in the molecules. The rhythm does not come from outside; it emerges genuinely from the structure of chemical compatibilities, from the way reactions continuously re-organise themselves. This is pure chemical invention: a new temporal form that the prior state did not contain as an explored possibility.

1.3. The Inventive Subject as a Point of Intensification

Recognising invention as a structural property of matter under sufficient complexity does not eliminate the human subject nor render reflexivity irrelevant. It radically alters the place the subject occupies and the function it exercises. The subject does not originate invention; it intensifies it. It participates in a process that reality already is, amplifying it through reflexivity, through symbolic re-organisation capacities, through conscious deliberation. The subject is a point of intensification, not an origin.

Hannah Arendt offers an important conceptual tool here, though its rigorous application demands significant correction. In The Human Condition, Arendt identifies natality as a fundamental ontological category, the capacity to initiate genuinely, to bring the truly new into the world. This capacity marks a precise difference between labour (the biological cycle of reproduction, nourishment, survival), work (the production of durable objects, persistent artefacts), and action (genuine initiation in the political domain). Natality is the capacity to bring into the world something undetermined by prior order, to inaugurate a sequence of events whose consequences escape the control of the initiator, to open a future that was not necessary.

The convergence is clear and important: the rejection of total determinism, the recognition that genuine openness exists in reality. Not merely epistemic openness (incomplete human knowledge), but ontological: the future is not pre-inscribed; genuine space exists for the new to emerge when systems encounter sufficient excess.

The divergence demands rigorous explicit statement, for without it Arendt's concept of natality remains prisoner to a humanism that precise analysis must reject. Arendt anchors natality in a very precise specific condition: human plurality as the necessary foundation of genuine political action. True action exists only when multiple people act together, when there is a public space where the new can appear and be recognised as new by others, when a common world offers a stage for initiation. Natality is essentially pluralist in Arendt; it is a property of acting-in-common. The present analysis generalises the ontological principle (the capacity to initiate, to produce genuinely new form, is a real property of being), but refuses to generalise the human condition (human plurality as foundational anchorage). It generalises both: inventive capacity is a property of any system organised under sufficient complexity, and does not require human plurality as a founding anchor. A bacterial cell has genuine inventive capacity, it can generate a new metabolism when nutritional circumstances change, bifurcating into a new survival strategy. A singular nervous system has inventive capacity, it can learn, produce new synaptic connections that did not exist before, create a new pattern of thought. A singular organism, an insect, a bird, has inventive capacity, it can adapt to a new environment, inventing new survival strategies within its context.

Gilbert Simondon offers an ontological architecture that rewrites this capacity for invention without any reduction to Arendtian political pluralism. For Simondon, individuation is not a single event where a form is constituted once and thereafter remains; it is a continuous, iterative process, never completed. The individual is not a fixed form obtained and subsequently preserved; it is a permanent realisation of potential that never exhausts itself entirely. Prior to the constituted individual, there is tension, what he calls the pre-individual, energy, instability, a potential charge seeking continuous resolution. Individuation is the process whereby this tension resolves into a stable, operative form, yet never completely, never definitively. Some pre-individual energy persists beneath the formed individual; it continually forces its re-configuration; it maintains constitutive openness.

The convergence with our thesis is substantive and important: individuation is real, there is true production of new form, genuine novelty, not a mere unveiling of something virtually present. The pre-individual is not a secret essence of the individual awaiting manifestation; it is an operative tension forcing permanent re-configuration. True operation takes place.

The divergence requires meticulous care, for without precise clarification the text drifts into generic process philosophy where the specificity of analysis is lost. Simondon treats the pre-individual as a reserve, a potential that gradually updates into individuation through a continuous process. There is relative resolution, provisional completeness, a sense in which tension resolves. The present analysis strictly rejects this: it retains individuation as permanent tension, without final resolution, without definitive rest. The pre-individual is not 'before' the individual in a temporal sense; it is 'through' the individual, tension persists beneath constituted form, not merely as an archaeological substrate, but as a continuous engine of re-configuration. The individual does not resolve into stable peace. It remains under permanent pressure from the excess that constitutes its capacity to change.

How does this connect precisely with invention? The human subject is not the origin of the tension forcing invention, that tension is cosmic, operative in all organised matter from the beginning. The reflexive human subject is a specific intensification of tension through the capacity to recognise its own constitutive tension and deliberately amplify it. It makes tension the raw material of thought and action. It re-organises the symbolic to inhabit it. It establishes new structures of signification that allow tension to be lived. This is intensification in a precise sense, not origin.

The scientist who detects an anomalous pattern in data experiences and intensifies the capacity of the theoretical regime to inscribe the new. The data already contained excess, information that existing theory could not accommodate, observations contradicting predictions, measurements excluded by the explanatory model. The scientist renders this excess visible, re-organising the conceptual schema to allow the new to become intelligible, creating space in the conceptual regime for anomaly to cease being a sign of error and become legitimate data. He does not originate excess; he recognises it under pressure and amplifies it until the theoretical regime bifurcates into a new conceptual configuration.

The poet who captures invisible tension in language intensifies the capacity of language to re-configure and expand. Language is a structure under permanent pressure, terms whose efficacy use has worn down, concepts whose utility has decayed, expressions demanded by new realities for which no words yet exist. The poet detects this pressure, invents new expressions, rethinks syntax, and creates new modes of signification allowing language to absorb the new without disintegration. He does not create language from scratch; he intensifies linguistic plasticity already in operation, forcing language to bifurcate into new possibilities of expression.

A political institution re-organising itself in the face of an unforeseen crisis intensifies the constitutive plasticity of political systems. The crisis had already exposed excess, new conditions that existing structures could not integrate, populations with new needs for which law had no category, realities that established procedures could not govern. The institution capable of re-organising itself without losing legal identity amplifies latent response capacity, forcing the political system to bifurcate into a new configuration.

Human reflexivity is, therefore, the specific capacity to take as an object of its own operation the tension characterising any organised system, and deliberately amplify it. One thinks about what one thinks. One speaks about language. One legislates about laws. This supplementary layer of reflection, this fold of the symbolic upon itself, does not alter fundamental ontological structure (every organised system is already under permanent tension; all complex matter continually invents); it dramatically amplifies the visibility and operativity of this structure. The human is special not because it is the origin of invention, nor because it possesses a privilege of creativity, but because it can turn the very tension that constitutes it into an object and a lever. It can amplify what reality already is.

This point completely redefines the question of the creative subject. If the subject originated invention, we would have to explain whence comes intentionality, the capacity to project, the will to create something new. Such explanations drag us back to the aporias of prior systems, Kantian genius, Hegelian consciousness, the will that transcends. But if the subject is a point of intensification, the explanation is simple: the subject does not need to explain itself as an origin because it participates in a process already occurring. Invention does not come from outside reality into the subject; it stems from the fact that the subject is already immersed within a real structure that is creative, that is continuous invention. The conscious human subject is a rare form produced by invention, a nervous system that managed to make itself an object of reflection, bringing to light the tension that reality already was.

What this means is that the creative subject, the scientist, the poet, the political inventor, need not be an exceptional genius. He needs merely to be attentive to tension already present, capable of recognising it, capable of amplifying it through symbolic operations (experimentation, language, institutional re-organisation). This renders creativity accessible and permanent to all who can maintain a certain psychic and social plasticity. It is not the privilege of exceptional minorities; it is a capacity any human system can exercise when it maintains openness to the new. What distinguishes the innovative scientist from the conformist scientist is not innate creative capacity, both share the same constitutive tension, but merely the disposition to recognise excess in data, amplifying it rather than denying it, re-organising theoretical schemata rather than rejecting the new.

1.4. Closure as the Active Refusal of Invention

If invention is a structural property of matter under sufficient complexity, then the active refusal of invention is a functional pathology, not a simple cognitive error, not good-faith ignorance, but a deliberate, structured operation denying what reality is. This denial has a precise name: ontological closure.

Ontological closure is a system actively closing upon its own organisation, repelling the operative excess that forces change. It is not stability, every living organisation, every organised structure, maintains dynamism under pressure, a plasticity permitting re-configuration when circumstances shift. Closure is deliberate freezing: the system consumes increasing energy to maintain its configuration against the constitutive pressure of excess. It is a functional pathology in the precise sense identified by Georges Canguilhem in The Normal and the Pathological.

Canguilhem demonstrated with rigour that true normativity is not fixed adherence to a single predetermined norm. It is the capacity to create new norms when circumstances shift radically. Health is active flexibility: an organism capable of altering functioning significantly without losing integrity when the environment demands it. Pathology is rigidity: insistence upon a fixed norm when context has rendered that norm biologically unviable. The pathological organism consumes increasing resources, psychic, physiological, energetic, in defence of a pattern rendered obsolete, rather than re-organising itself for a new situation. The more inadequate the old norm, the more resources its stubborn maintenance consumes.

Closure is precisely this pathology: a system denying the constitutive condition that reality is (permanent change, contingency, demanded plasticity). It denies this in defence of the present model, the current configuration. The cost is immediate and grows exponentially. The greater the reality it must deny, the greater the energy spent on denial, the greater the pathology.

Dogmatism operates as an active refusal of what reality is: dogmatism is not good-faith ignorance, a person may be honestly mistaken about a specific fact, believing false propositions through lack of information or unintentional reasoning errors. Dogmatism is a different operation: it is an active, deliberate block against information contradicting the defended model. A dogmatic system structures itself to reject any evidence contesting its narrative. A dogmatic system blocks against operative excess through several intertwined operations. First operation: systematic refusal to admit data contradicting the model, observation is conducted selectively to confirm, never to genuinely refute. When refutation inevitably occurs despite these efforts, it is discarded as an anomaly, procedural error, data corruption, or miscalibrated instrumentation. Second operation: denial that circumstances have changed, insistence that the world remains fundamentally as it ever was, that present challenges are merely temporary, that the old configuration will function if only we defend it with sufficient vigour and sincerity. Third operation: ritualised defence of the original narrative, continuous repetition of formulas that worked in the past, without accumulated evidence of failure prompting genuine doubt. The method is pure: the more reality denies the narrative, the more fiercely the narrative is repeated.

This is a functional pathology because it consumes resources (psychic, political, financial, energetic, military) in obstinate defence of a model against reality. The greater the discrepancy between the defended model and real circumstances, the greater the consumption. A government attempting to maintain a policy when circumstances have rendered it economically unviable consumes resources in propaganda (convincing the population that the policy still works despite evidence), repression (violently suppressing those who question), and increasingly sophisticated denial (interpreting failure as evidence that we have not yet insisted vigorously enough). A company defending an obsolete commercial model invests in increasingly costly marketing, desperate campaigns attempting to convince consumers that the product remains essential, fighting against a market that has rejected it. A scientific institution refusing new data wastes itself in preventive refutation, explanations circumventing rather than accommodating the new finding, and reiterated defence that increasing resources must be dedicated to refuting the new rather than exploring its implications.

The cost grows to a breaking point: the system collapses or changes under absolute existential pressure. In extreme cases, closure forces a transition to tyranny: violent suppression of innovation to protect the defended model. A regime confronting innovation that threatens its foundations may double down on repression, outlawing creativity and criminalising the exploration of the new. This amplifies the cost of closure: now the system requires an escalating coercive apparatus to maintain what was previously possible without effort, what formerly functioned without high costs. The repressive apparatus becomes a machine consuming ever more resources, increasingly violent, to maintain an ever more transparent fiction.

The central paradox structuring the analysis of 1.4: the cost of not inventing is frequently higher than the cost of inventing. When a system is forced to innovate, because excess cannot be ignored indefinitely, innovation initially costs significant resources. Re-configuration is laborious, uncertain, destabilising. Yet afterwards, the system finds a new operative equilibrium and establishes functioning at controllable costs once more. A system capable of absorbing perturbation, re-organising adequately, and maintaining plasticity distributes costs in small increments over time rather than accumulating them. When a system refuses to innovate, closing itself in closure, cost accumulates exponentially. Every denial demands additional energy. Every rejection of the new renders the block more costly. Until a catastrophic breaking point, institutional collapse, destruction of legitimacy, systemic failure.

This bears a radical political consequence that the next chapter will explore in detail. The political question is not whether we permit invention, reality will invent regardless when under sufficient pressure. Invention is an operation occurring whether institutions recognise it or not. The political question is whether we can create institutional space for subaltern invention to be heard, recognised, and integrated as legitimate knowledge, or whether the closure of institutions forces innovation to take the form of violent collapse and catastrophic transformation. It is a question of differential costs, of distributed versus accumulated violence.

What closure fails to comprehend is that its very operation of denial reproduces the excess it denies. The more fiercely an institution in closure rejects the new, the more the new accumulates. Repressed energy does not vanish; it re-organises into increasingly destructive forms. A population whose creativity goes unrecognised does not cease inventing; it invents on the margins, in forms the official system cannot integrate, which may explode in rupture. Subaltern knowledge lacking a voice remains operative, remains valid, only outside official circulation. Institutional innovation that is blocked remains necessary; it will simply be implemented through collapse and destruction rather than gradual adaptation.

This is the true cost of closure: it is not that it prevents invention (preventing what is structural is impossible). It is that it forces invention to take the form of destruction rather than re-configuration. It accumulates excess until bifurcation occurs not as a new possible equilibrium, but as a catastrophic rupture. The paradox is that closure, conceiving itself as the defence of order, is an operation rendering order increasingly fragile, ever closer to sudden destruction.

An institution capable of maintaining plasticity, listening to what does not fit perfectly, recognising as legitimate knowledge that which was unexpected, re-organising itself in small ways in response to the new, distributes costs over time, maintains relative stability, and allows the future to remain a future (open, continuous invention) rather than becoming mere sclerotic repetition or abrupt collapse. This is the fundamental political difference that the next chapter will interrogate.

Closure does not preserve; it degrades more rapidly. The cost of not inventing, in systems facing excess, is frequently higher than the cost of inventing.

2.1. The Distinction Between Two Modes of Narration

The word 'create' circulates in philosophical, scientific, artistic, and everyday discourse with heterogeneous senses that are rarely examined before being used as a foundation for argumentation. At least two conceptions dominate the tradition, sharing a deep presupposition that must be dissolved before proposing an alternative with operatory precision. The first is the essentialism of distinctions: reality contains pre-formed distinctions waiting to be recognised, named, or revealed. Electrons existed before being discovered; laws of gravitation operated before Newton formulated them; the unconscious functioned before Freud articulated it; the molecular structure of DNA existed awaiting Watson and Crick. The creative act, in this view, is fundamentally an act of recognition, of capturing a distinction available in reality that had not yet been rendered operative for a symbolic system, not because reality concealed it, but because the symbolic system had not yet developed the conceptual instrumentation to distinguish it. Creation is revelation: the difference was there, latent, awaiting the gaze that would render it visible.

This conception originates in scholastic theology, where creation was the exclusive attribute of God, and discovery a mode of human participation in that divine act. The progressive secularisation of modern philosophy preserved this structure: the knowing subject takes the place of God, yet the relation remains the same. Reality contains essences; knowledge accesses them. Plato's Forms, Thomas Aquinas's eternal ideas of God, intrinsic properties of objects in analytic philosophy, all these formulations share the presupposition that distinctions exist prior to the operation rendering them available.

The second conception is the emergentism of distinctions. Distinctions emerge alongside the operations that inscribe them; they are not pre-existing properties slumbering in wait of awakening. Reality possesses internal structure: processes, rhythms, compatibilities and incompatibilities, pressures, tendencies, yet this structure lacks the grain of distinctions produced when symbolic systems operate upon it. The grain of distinctions available for operation, calculation, transmission, and decision is the effect of inscribing operations a system performs upon the excess of compatibilities presented by reality. It is not a prior property of reality that systems read passively like a reader reading a pre-printed page. It is the result of an interaction between system and reality, wherein system operation transforms reality into operable distinctions.

The case of Newton demarcates this difference with paradigmatic clarity worthy of detailed development. Prior to Newton, the distinction between the motion of planets and the fall of terrestrial bodies was a current, operative distinction: they were separate domains, governed by different principles, studied by different disciplines. Celestial phenomena obeyed celestial physics, perfect cycles, eternity, and relative immobility. Terrestrial phenomena obeyed sublunary physics, linear motion, change, corruption. No one questioned this separation because observational records existed for both, practices treated them separately, astronomy as the study of the immutable, dynamics as the study of the transient, and the mathematics of the era did not permit integrating both domains within a single frame of calculation. What Newton opened was not the discovery of something already there as a hidden truth, it was the indistinction between these domains: that the same force, gravity, explained both, that planetary motion was continuous fall, that terrestrial fall was interrupted celestial motion. This indistinction was not available as an operable distinction before Newton inscribed it mathematically. The material processes rendering that inscription possible and pressing for it existed, unresolved problems, orbital anomalies, contradictions between models, yet the distinction itself, as a distinction available for scientific operation and calculation, emerged with Newtonian formulation. Newton did not discover what was there; he opened a difference that rendered visible what was previously available only as un-named excess, un-integrated pressure, anomaly without category.

The emergentism of distinctions is neither anti-realism nor ontological idealism. It does not assert that reality does not exist prior to the distinctions inscribed by symbolic systems; it asserts that distinctions available for operation, thought, and action emerge alongside the operations rendering them available. Reality is not undifferentiated, not a structureless chaos, reality has structure, conformities, constraints, yet the mode in which it is differentiated by a symbolic system, the lines cut, entities distinguished, relations established, were not inscribed in reality prior to that system differentiating it. The concept of the 'electron' was not inscribed in reality's structure before Thomson inscribed the distinction between mass and charge rendering the entity operative for physics. What was inscribed were material processes rendering the opening of that distinction possible and necessary, ionisation phenomena existed, behaviours incompatible with prevailing atomic models existed, yet the distinction itself, as a distinction available for scientific operation and instrumentation, emerged with Thomsonian inscription. Once Newtonian gravitation is inscribed, the conceptual space of physics is permanently transformed, it is impossible to think classical, relativistic, or quantum physics as though gravitation had not been inscribed. Temporal reversibility is structurally violated: inscription leaves a permanent mark upon the space of possibilities for as long as it remains in operation.

The distinction between essentialism and emergentism of distinctions is not merely semantic or historiographical. It has practical consequences for how we evaluate the new and recognise invention. If essentialism were correct, if distinctions pre-existed, then all genuine innovation would be impossible: there would be only re-discovery. The historian of science would seek precursors who had already seen; the creator would always precede himself. If emergentism is correct, if distinctions emerge with operation, then innovation is possible though not guaranteed, necessary in certain contexts though not inevitable. The historian can trace conditions rendering inscription possible, without finding the distinction already there, fully formed, waiting. This difference in comprehension profoundly alters how we evaluate responsibility, originality, and intellectual merit. It alters the political question too: if the new is revelation, then access to the new is a matter of education, of learning what was already there. If the new is emergence, then access to the new is a matter of conditions allowing excess to be inscribable, granting systems inscription plasticity.

This analysis dissolves the discovery/creation dichotomy in a precise, operatory fashion. The objection that scientific discoveries are openings of difference, rather than revelations of what was there, is correct. Every inscription of a new distinction in the field is an opening of difference, regardless of whether it is narrated as 'discovery', the researcher found what was waiting, or as 'creation', the artist produced what did not exist. Both narratives describe the same operatory structure with different accentuations and institutional contexts of legitimation: the discovery narrative highlights continuity with pre-inscriptive reality, shifting responsibility to reality, allowing one to say 'it was inevitable'; the creation narrative highlights the novelty of the inscribed distinction, retaining responsibility in the inscribing system, allowing one to say 'it was a choice'. The argument here privileges neither narrative; it shows they share the same operatory structure and that the difference resides in the register of narration, the institutional context, the horizon of legitimation invoked by each. Modern science preferred 'discovery' to claim access to reality as it is; modern art preferred 'creation' to claim originality and rupture. Yet in both cases the structure is identical: an operation opening a distinction, rendering available what was not operable.

What matters is not the word chosen, 'discovery' or 'creation', but the precise recognition that to create is already to inscribe anew, and that every inscription genuinely changes the field, it is not mere representation of something pre-existing, not a mirror reflecting neutrally, but a re-organisation of the field of visibility allowing new effects to arise. Once Newtonian gravitation is inscribed, it becomes possible to launch satellites, calculate orbits with precision previously impossible, and deduce consequences no prior astronomer could even formulate. Once Maxwellian electromagnetism is inscribed, broadcasting, long-distance signal transmission, and an entire technology become possible that were not even conceptually operable prior to inscription, not because photons did not exist, but because the distinction between electric and magnetic fields, the equation unifying them, and the understanding of light as an electromagnetic wave were unavailable. Inscriptions do not create material reality, material reality exists and operates independently of inscription, knowledge, or human formation, yet they re-configure our access to it, re-organising the field of possible operations and permitting technological, theoretical, and institutional effects that were not previously operable because no distinctions were available to guide them. This is the depth of the emergentist distinction: it is not a question of being more or less realistic. It is a matter of recognising that reality exists and that access to it is always inscriptive, always mediated by symbolic systems rendering aspects of reality operable for systems employing them.

2.2. The Ontological Structure of the Creative Act

The creative operation has three distinct moments worth identifying with precision, not as a chronological sequence occurring in successive phases, but as an analytical structure describing what is underway when creation occurs. The first moment is excess: the present field contains compatibilities that the inscriptive regime does not integrate within its normal operation. There is more than the present organisation can contain, more possible relations than those updated by the prevailing configuration, more processes in operation than those captured by available descriptions. The pressure of this excess upon the inscriptive regime renders creation possible and, in a sense, necessary, not because excess determines the form creation will take, nor as though excess already contained the emerging form, but because without excess there is no pressure for new inscription; without excess the system persists in its prevailing configuration. A sufficiently complex material organisation always possesses more functional compatibilities than its current configuration updates at any given moment. A functioning system utilises a subset of the relations and configurations made available by its material conditions, unperformed alternatives exist, untaken paths exist, unexplored potentialities remain. The remainder, what is compatible with the present state but un-updated, is real, present excess, un-abstracted, non-virtual in any weakened sense, exercising causal force upon the prevailing configuration. It is un-updated material compatibility exerting pressure, perturbing the prevailing configuration, rendering it metastable rather than simply stable, instable rather than simply in motion.

The second moment is operation: a system confronting excess produces a new inscription organising part of that excess into a stabilisable form, into a distinction allowing what was un-integrated incompatibility to become operable compatibility. This inscription may result from conscious deliberation, the researcher formulating a hypothesis rigorously, the legislator redesigning an institution, or from technical exploration, the artisan experimenting with a material, the composer testing a harmonic modulation, or from productive accident, the unexpected observation opening an entirely new distinction, the error revealing incompatibility, or from a process without a subject, the genetic mutation opening a new lifeform, the crystallisation of molecules in an unforeseen configuration. Common to all modes is the operation of inscription: the production of a new distinction that the prior configuration could not integrate, a new category rendering operable what was expressless, a new regime enabling what was impossible. It is a material transformation: not merely a readjustment of names, not merely a re-reading of data under a new vocabulary, but a transformation of what is operatively possible, of what can be done, distinguished, calculated. Cognitive neuroscience of creativity confirms this structure at the individual cognitive system level with remarkable precision. Studies on insight and creative problem-solving consistently show that the moment of insight, the 'eureka' experience, does not correspond to the moment a new idea 'arrived' from outside or 'appeared' fully formed. It corresponds to the moment connections built by the cognitive system non-consciously, implicitly, unformulated, attain a configuration sufficiently stable to emerge into consciousness as a distinguishable form. The excess of non-conscious processing, failed attempts, successive approximations, implicit rearrangements, precedes insight; insight is the inscription of what processing had already constructed as unformulated tension, as a latent pattern. The subject experiencing insight does not create from nothing, does not produce being ex nihilo; he produces conditions allowing the excess of his own cognitive system to find an inscribable, distinguishable, manipulable form.

The third moment is open difference: the new distinction is now available in the field, operable by any system accessing the inscription; what was previously indistinct can now be distinguished; the field has been structurally modified. Open difference is not merely new information added to the archive of what is known, it is new operative capacity: the field of what can be done has expanded, the domain of the operable widened. A molecular mutation opens a new space of biological possibilities: compatibilities of thermal energy and variations in genetic sequence reading, which the prior organism could not stabilise, operate within a new configuration, a new phenotype, opening new selection possibilities and evolutionary trajectories. Planetary orbit formation from gas and dust: multiple theoretical trajectories are possible given initial motion, gravitational attraction in constant operation; the stabilisation of a trajectory through mutual attraction produces a stable orbit, differentiable from other configurations, predictable in its parameters. Complex molecule synthesis from atoms: energy drawing atoms together, chemical bonding compatibilities in a new configuration, produces a molecule with properties non-reducible to isolated atoms, new chemical capacity, new behaviour in solution. Abolition as legal creation: individuals living under slavery with legally unresolved status, treated as property yet acting as agents, the inscription of that ambiguous category as 'person with rights' opens a new regime of rights, a new field of formal equality, a new space of legal intelligibility.

The retroactive and essentially hidden character of inscribed difference warrants precision to avoid confusion with teleology and clarify how history rewrites itself following successful inscription. Difference is not an intrinsic property of prior reality, it is the cumulative result of operation, inscription, and distinction rendered available. It becomes visible retroactively with a force resembling an optical illusion: once inscribed, it appears to have been there all along, appears inevitable, as though it were merely a matter of patient discovery. 'Gravitation was always there', true in a precise sense and false in another equally precise sense. True: certain material processes always occurred, planets always fell continuously around the sun, the apple always fell when detached from the tree. False: gravitation as an inscribed concept, an operable distinction, a named force with specific properties, a precise mathematical relation, is a Newtonian invention. Prior to Newton, different descriptions existed, natural telos, natural place, body qualities, rendering those processes intelligible within a distinct conceptual frame. 'An enslaved person was always a person', absolute ethical truth foundational to any justice, yet historically false: the legal inscription of that category as a subject of rights, a bearer of inalienable rights, is an abolitionist invention, not the discovery of a truth the law already contained. Prior to abolition, distinct legal categories existed, property, thing, non-person, rendering slavery intelligible and operable. Ontologically, difference is the effect of creative operation, not its cause or pre-existing property, retroactively read as though prior, yet priority is an optical illusion of successful inscription, an artefact of the narrative enabled by inscription.

Once Newton inscribes gravitation, the history of physics retroactively re-organises itself as a teleological progression towards that discovery, Kepler, Galileo, and Descartes are read as successive approximations of a truth Newton alone fully formulated. Yet this retroactive reading is a product of Newtonian inscription, not proof that destiny was inscribed. Once abolition inscribes the enslaved person as a subject of rights, human history retroactively reads itself as a progressive march towards that liberation, prior philosophers, from Aristotle to Locke, read as precursors of a truth abolitionists alone inscribed fully. Yet this progress narrative is a product of abolitionist inscription, the way history rewrites itself once a new distinction becomes available. None of these retroactive narratives is false in the sense of corresponding to un-grounded fiction, all are legitimate products of successful field inscription, describing real processes that occurred. What is crucial to note is that retroactivity does not mean destiny was pre-inscribed, that history 'was moving in that direction' inevitably. It means successful inscription retroactively re-organises the field such that prior necessity vanishes: it appears merely a matter of time, of inevitable discovery, of patient revelation of what was there. Yet this necessary appearance is the structure of inscription itself, a characteristic of how every successful inscription naturalises itself, how every functioning distinction comes to seem inevitable, rather than a property of what was inscribed.

Prigogine described dissipative systems as systems maintaining form far from thermodynamic equilibrium through continuous energy processing, producing radically new structures at critical bifurcation points that were undetermined by initial conditions. The physical model of invention lodges here with conceptual precision: bifurcation is the moment when the excess of fluctuations, of un-integrated compatibilities, saturates the stabilising capacity of the current regime, and the new emerging structure is unpredictable from the preceding regime, even if fully explicable once occurred, retroactively understandable as a consequence of physical laws. Excess does not determine what form the future will take, multiple possible forms are equally compatible with physical laws, it renders the present form insufficient and opens a field for new configurations. Novelty is real because the specific emerging form depends upon local conditions, microscopic fluctuations, contingencies captured completely by no prior model, chances exceeding calculation capacity.

This model carries consequences extending beyond physics: a system far from equilibrium is not far from equilibrium because it is in crisis, it continually uses energy, continually processes flows, and it is precisely this continuous operation that creates the excess capable of bifurcating. A political system under extreme crisis: multiple institutional re-configurations are viable, participatory democracy, corporatist authoritarianism, state collapse and local survival organisation, federation with a new degree of decentralisation, restoration of old forms, which one emerges was not predetermined by inevitable historical laws; it depends upon historical contingency, decisions of actors, and pressures that cannot be fully predicted because they involve choices among genuinely open alternatives. Linguistic invention: language shifts not because collective deliberation of speakers decides change, nor because an explicit plan of linguistic reform is executed, but because usage excess accumulates variations the available grammar cannot integrate without structural re-configuration; re-configuration occurs distributed across speaker communities over generations, uncoordinated, emergent, each generation inheriting prior variation and amplifying it. Vulgar Latin becoming Romance languages was not invented by any speaker or group of speakers consciously designing a replacement for classical Latin suited to a new post-imperial Roman context. It emerged from variation excess produced by daily interaction between Germanic conquerors and romanised populations, in ways no normative grammar captured, through expressions answering needs the available vocabulary could not satisfy. The outcome, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, intermediate forms, and creoles, are inventions of distributed material processes lacking an identifiable inventor, lacking a prior plan, lacking an explicit linguistic creation project, where each speaker merely continued speaking naturally, and language continued changing precisely because of that, under pressure from communication needs no prior language was fully sufficient to answer.

2.3. Creation Without Teleology: Immanent Orientation vs Teleology

The three moments of the creative operation, excess, inscription, open difference, do not form a sequence with a guaranteed result. Excess does not contain the emerging form; it presses for form without specifying which. Inscription does not execute a pre-existing plan; it re-organises excess into a stabilisable form. Open difference was not a destination history pursued; it is a new field of possibilities becoming available. This structure distinguishes creation from revelation, execution, or realisation of pre-existing potency. If form were in excess as potency awaiting update, creation would be the discovery of that potency. If a prior plan existed that inscription merely executed, creation would be the realisation of a determined project. If open difference were destined from the start, inscribed in history as a goal, creation would be a march towards that goal. Yet in none of these cases would there be genuine creation; there would be revelation, execution, or realisation of hidden necessity.

The new emerging form was not determined in advance, nor was it, therefore, pre-inscribed in history as a destiny to fulfil, a goal towards which history moves. Prigogine's bifurcation is not chaotic indeterminism where everything is equally possible: real constraints exist, an order structured by physical and chemical laws exists, limits to what can emerge exist, it is specific structural indeterminacy: indeterminacy of which form emerges, not indeterminacy of which forms can emerge. A system in crisis reaches a critical point where multiple forms are possible within the field of compatibilities; which one emerges depends upon microscopic fluctuations non-reducible to macroscopic law, local contingencies, events determined by no general law. Jazz might not have emerged from slavery, there could have been total cultural collapse, silence, death of cultural forms without novelty. Creole might have failed, multilingual people forced into violent contact might have remained incommunicable, each group locked in its languages without inventing a new system. Abolition might have failed, and slavery persevered indefinitely despite carrying contradictions, despite enslaved resistance, despite economic unviability argued by various historians. This failure possibility is not marginal, not detail: it is central. It marks the radical difference between genuine creation and execution of a pre-inscribed plan. If form is guaranteed from the start, there is no risk; if genuine risk exists, form was not guaranteed.

The distinction between immanent orientation and teleology is the precise distinction between a local, situated 'what for' and a transcendent 'what for' governing all history. Immanent orientation is the pressure present conditions exert upon the form inscription can take: this specific system, carrying this specific excess, in this concrete, situated field, with these human and material capacities available, with these tools created by prior tradition, can inscribe certain forms and not others. Orientation is real, there is no infinite space of possibilities, it is not free creation from nothing, yet it is local and contingent: it determines the field of possibles for inscription without determining which possible will update, without predicting which form the system will choose or which microscopic chance will influence bifurcation. Linguistic invention emerges when the pressure of 'what cannot be said', communication needs unsatisfied by available language, interacts with available heritage language, with existing patterns of syntactic deviation speakers already practice informally. A new word is not predetermined by pressure, does not follow mechanically from pressure, but emerges from real pressure upon available language, from speaker creativity under constraint. Political invention: pressure of new excess, a marginalised population whose rights lack legal expression, a new social right demanded by material situation producing legitimacy collapse, interacts with available institutional resources, collective organisation forms, legal instruments reinterpretable for a new end, legal precedents serving as a basis for innovation. Re-configuration occurs not as a historical end inscribed from the start as a goal pursued by history, not as execution of an Enlightenment project of universal progress, but as a local, contingent response to what exceeds prevailing forms, as pressure forcing a new frame.

Teleology is the postulation of a pre-inscribed end realised by creation, governing and orienting every moment: the form produced by creation was determined prior to creative operation, whether as potency of the transcendental subject, immanent structure of reality, or historical necessity inscribed in the dialectic of social being. Teleology means a telos exists towards which history tends, every creation an approximation to that end, the future repeating a structure already inscribed in being. Creation without teleology is not creation without orientation, that would be chaos, pure arbitrariness, it is creation without a pre-inscribed end, without guarantee of a transcendent destination governing what emerges. Hannah Arendt formulated this with conceptual precision when describing natality as a fundamental ontological category of the human condition: every human being is an absolute beginning, irreducible to biological birth; his human existence is an irruption of novelty in the shared world, his political action the capacity to initiate what was unpredicted, bringing the new into appearance without any historical law prescribing it. The convergence with our structure is real and specific: creation as a beginning without guarantee, an opening producing consequences exceeding initiator control, ontological natality non-exclusive to the human. The difference lies in concept foundation: Arendt anchors natality in specifically human plurality and the condition of actor in public space, because human beings are multiple, distinct, each irreducible to function or predetermined role, each action can introduce beginnings un-anticipated by others, novelty emerging from perspective conflict and dialogue. The structure of opening without guarantee proposed here has broader scope: applying to any system inscribing a new distinction, including non-human systems, organisms without political consciousness, processes without a subject, biological evolutions without intelligence.

Risk is what distinguishes genuine creation from arbitrariness or execution of a determined program. The objection that creating without a pre-inscribed 'what for' is creating at random, pure chance, assumes the alternative to a pre-inscribed end is absence of orientation, absence of constraint. This assumption is philosophically incorrect and empirically demonstrated false across all invention history. Pure chance lacks conditions, orientation, order; multiple results are equally probable, nothing favours any form. Risk has conditions, it is risk precisely in relation to established conditions, risk because the result is indeterminate despite conditions, not guaranteed even if conditions are respected. Creation has precise conditions: present excess pressing re-configuration, system capacities attempting distinction inscription, available tools and resources, prior inscriptions constituting the field where the new distinction emerges and integrates. Precisely by having conditions can it fail or succeed relative to those conditions, evaluation criteria exist, ways of being corrected exist. Arbitrary creation, were it possible, were there true absence of conditions, would be creation where speaking of success or failure, better or worse, made no sense, for no constraint existed to satisfy.

What absence of teleology eliminates is not orientation, pressure, or real constraint. These exist and act. What teleology adds and must be eliminated is guarantee, pre-knowledge of result, necessity rendering result inevitable as if awaiting discovery. Creation without teleology orientates without guaranteeing; risks without arbitrating; stands under real pressure of un-integrated excess, yet without an inscribed destination knowing where it goes. A researcher formulating a rigorous hypothesis in his discipline orientates investigation by established conditions, known laws of his field, prior data recognised as relevant, available instrumentation and limits, without controlling whether the hypothesis proves fertile, produces new phenomena, or opens fields unimagined. An artisan experimenting with a new technique orientates gesture by material nature, process knowledge acquired through practice, physical restrictions imposed by material, without controlling what the technique reveals when applied fully in contexts un-experimented by the artisan, what uses emerge when others learn the technique, what possibilities open at scales the inventor never imagined. Excess presses; orientation directs response; result exceeds initiator control of the inscription operation. This is risk inherent to genuine creation, what makes it genuine, what prevents it from being mere execution: not application of a guaranteed plan with results assured in design, but an operation under pressure where multiple forms answer the same excess, where emerging form is contingent despite orientation, where neither inventor nor anyone could predict exactly what would come.

2.4. Irreversibility and Locality of Difference

Once a difference is inscribed in the field, it permanently modifies the field for as long as it remains in operation, as long as systems continue using and transmitting the distinction. Inscribing anew is inscribing anew forever, not in the naïve sense that nothing changes or that inscription is eternal, but in the precise sense that it may be obliterated by coercive force, mutate upon reinterpretation, or vanish if the field collapses and no systems remain to transmit it, yet it cannot be 'undone' holding everything else equal, cannot be reversed as if it had never occurred. Temporal reversibility is structurally violated: irreversibility is not the arrow of time from thermodynamics applied to a concept, not merely entropy increasing, it is the ontological property that inscription leaves a permanent mark upon the space of possibilities available for subsequent systems. Once Newton inscribes gravitation as a universal force, physics' conceptual space is forever transformed, thinking classical physics without gravitation is impossible, mechanics without the inverse-square law impossible, subsequent systems inheriting this inscription as a reference frame. Once abolition inscribes the enslaved person as a legal subject, a bearer of inalienable rights, moral intelligibility space is forever transformed, justifying slavery using the same human dignity categories now inscribed is impossible, subsequent legal systems inheriting this inscription as a foundation. Once jazz invents timbre, syncopated rhythm, and harmonic improvisation in response to slavery excess, the musical landscape becomes permanently different, jazz's absence would be an ontological difference in the musical world, not a simple historical gap, not a mere lack of knowledge.

This irreversibility is no superficial cultural property, not merely that a work persists over time or exerts long-term influence. This irreversibility belongs to another ontological order: the structural irreversibility of inscription, the mark operation leaves upon the field. An inscribed difference modifies the field while operative, while systems continue using distinction to distinguish, operate, decide. Even if violently erased later, inscription destroyed, texts burned, collective memory falsified, even if forgotten in historical catastrophe, the population creating distinction dispersed or destroyed, even if superseded by other inscriptions rendering it redundant, old distinction disused because new distinctions fulfil function, the field was what it was while distinction was operative. The field modified by inscription does not revert to the pre-inscription field; the pre-inscription state ceases to exist as a possibility for systems aware of distinction. What may occur is loss of operativity: system abandons distinction, untransmitted to subsequent generations, superseded by distinctions rendering it redundant or obsolete. Yet structural mark upon possibility space remains: a system operating without available distinction and a system choosing disuse of available distinction are structurally different. Structural irreversibility applies to modest intellectual gestures as much as to grandest consequences. An observation opening a conceptual distinction in a specific research field modifies that field's inscriptive field, even if forgotten by subsequent researchers, un-fertile as predicted by its subscriber, abandoned by its initiator. Difference was opened; field modified while distinction operated; modification consequences echo in problems inherited by subsequent researchers as context.

Locality of creation is the necessary, non-contradictory complement of irreversibility. Every open difference is local in origin and primary operation: modifying the field of available distinctions of a specific system in specific conditions, not the field 'in general', not reality as totality. Western musical notation opened a precise difference in sound operations for systems operating with that notation, musicians, composers, transmission traditions, not the entire world, not all musical systems independent of practices and historical inscription conditions. Open difference generality is always a secondary propagation effect: other systems adopt distinction, transmit beyond origin, modify upon transmission in new context, circulating and widening reach. A researcher's distinction inscribed in a specialised paper may remain local to producing system, laboratory, research tradition, propagate through research field via citation and debate, becoming available for multiple systems across intellectual geography, adopted by adjacent fields, becoming available for a widened domain beyond original. Difference between these cases, local inscription remaining local, propagating, generalising, lies not in open difference structure itself: lies in propagation conditions, availability of inheriting systems, distinction relevance to new problems.

Uncontrollable consequences for responsibility warrant final, precise attention clarifying what responding for creation means. Creator, scientist formulating hypothesis, poet inventing new form, legislator redesigning institution, political movement inscribing new right, controls not what inscribed difference does to receiving field, interpretations given by other systems, secondary effects produced when integrated in un-anticipated contexts. New scientific concept produces theoretical reformulations in neighbouring fields un-anticipated by distinction inventor, Newton could not anticipate quantum mechanics using Newtonian gravitation as limit scale case, approximation under certain conditions, reinterpreting force as space-time curvature. Freud inscribing 'unconscious' un-anticipated commercial discourse appropriation reducing concept to consumption habit, pop psychology trivialising concept. New political movement inscribing new right, voting right without property qualification, women's legal equality right, minority recognition right, inspires interpretations original members un-recognise or actively reject, abolition intending formal equality converted into functional inequality by legal systems maintaining legal segregation, extended to women's and colonised peoples' struggles un-formulated explicitly by original abolition movement. Not all effects are predicted or desired; some contradict original intent.

Responsibility here differs from usual understanding. Not responsibility for un-anticipated events, not being a seer predicting detailed future consequences, an impossible demand paralysing all creation. Responsibility for initiated operation escaping control, entering a transforming field. Creator answers for creation, distinction inscription, formulation quality, development care, not uncontrollable effects produced when adopted by others, reinterpreted in new contexts, appropriated for un-predicted ends. Precise distinction between inscription responsibility and un-controlled effect non-responsibility renders responsibility finite, operable, avoiding episodic paralysis where no creator acts fearing unforeseen consequences. Not an evasion of responsibility: precision regarding real scope, difference between creator control, quality, honesty, inscription rigour, and out of control, subsequent system reinterpretation, integration in unimagined contexts.

Inscribed difference enters a field transforming it upon adoption; emerging outcome is not merely original distinction as formulated, but expanded field enabled by distinction, containing future inscriptions no original creator system can fully anticipate or control. This is responsibility limit and depth simultaneously: creator answers for opening made, not paths taken by field post-opening. Once Newton opens gravitation, all subsequent physics is constrained by that opening; Newton is un-responsible for every direction physics takes, yet responsible for opening field. Once abolition inscribes person as legal category including all humans, subsequent human rights politics inherits inscription; abolition movement is un-responsible for every concept interpretation or appropriation, yet responsible for inscribing distinction rendering other distinctions possible.

The creator does not control what the receiving field does to the difference.

3.1. The Objection of Luxury: Two Distinct Senses of Invention

The objection carries the weight of evidence and should not be dismissed with pseudo-radical speed. It runs thus: to invent, one requires time, material resources, basic security. One facing starvation writes no poetry. One under existential threat theorises not about the future, redesigns no institutions, explores not the possible for the pleasure of exploring it. This observation is not ideological, it is practical and empirically verifiable. A civilisation accumulating sufficient stability and resources can dedicate energy to non-necessary activities: composing symphonies, abstract painting, fundamental physics research, philosophy as reflexive exercise lacking immediate application. A collapsing community suspends such invention, abandons refinement, returns to essentials. Great art academies flourished in periods of economic stability; fundamental research deepened in well-funded universities. Correlation is observable. The objection holds for one thing we call invention.

Yet it commits a scope error invalidating it for the thesis developed in this chapter. The error lies in using the word 'invention' in two distinct senses without noticing the distinction. The objection speaks of one thing, deliberate cultural invention, creative exploration of the possible by subjects and communities possessing sufficient stability to dedicate themselves to exploring the superfluous. This invention is indeed deferrable. It can be postponed without the system collapsing immediately. A Victorian aristocracy can cease writing sonatas without disintegrating. An academy of sciences can interrupt fundamental research without society vanishing. This first sense makes the objection appear irrefutable.

Western philosophical tradition conflated both senses under the category of Kantian 'genius', that through which nature gives rules to art. Kant strictly separated the creative genius, whose invention is original because it surpasses established rules, from the worker merely executing known techniques. This holds for the first sense. Genius is a figure of privilege: requiring education, material access, leisure, social recognition. Yet the Kantian framework cannot think the forced symbolic re-organisation occurring when a cultural system is destroyed. It cannot think invention without genius, without transcendent exceptional individuals. This leaves invisible all material re-organisation operations performed daily by communities under pressure.

The second sense is operatively different: invention as symbolic operation of re-organisation when excess is un-integrable by prevailing forms. What a system does when its inscription forms, inherited language, available experience-organising categories, signification modes, can no longer process what it confronts. A forcibly displaced community cannot maintain inherited languages as if nothing occurred. A population migrating to a context where no native language permits communication must invent, not desiring superfluous exploration, but because communication is immediate necessity and inherited system permits it not. A colonised person seeing his inscription system destroyed (forbidden religion, suppressed language, dismantled family) cannot postpone symbolic re-organisation allowing him to continue as a coherent subject. Migrant, refugee, enslaved, colonised face invention not as enrichment choice. They face it as persistence necessity, carrying no deadline because excess forcing re-organisation has arrived and presses continuously.

Confusing both senses produces a radically false diagnosis. Leading to the conclusion that populations under adversity invent not through lacking stability. An empirically false conclusion. Such populations invent continuously, indeed more intensely than privileged ones. What they lack is not inventiveness: it is recognition. What they invent goes unrecognised by the official legibility regime as invention. Inventing at linguistic, symbolic, social practice levels that specialists and academics frequently ignore or disregard. Jazz, creole languages, medicinal practices of colonised peoples, social organisation systems emerging in institutional destruction contexts, high-density invention that official knowledge regimes only recently began recognising as such, even then frequently framed as 'cultural' rather than 'scientific', expression rather than operation.

The chapter works exclusively with the second sense. Essential for dissolving the objection through clarification. The question is not whether privileged systems dedicate themselves to disinterested aesthetic activities, they do, observably. The question is: when systems face un-integrated excess, do they re-organise symbolic and linguistic operations to integrate that excess? Empirical answer: they re-organise, precisely when conditions are most adverse, for there excess leaves no alternative. Not because adversity is good, extreme adversity kills people, destroys languages, eliminates knowledge, tortures body and memory. Because necessity forcing invention exists intensified there, un-attenuated. Excess is greater, pressure greater, urgency greater. Conditions making invention necessary are conditions of adversity, not comfort.

Operatory clarification undoes the objection by simple discrimination between two phenomena common discourse conflates under one term. Without discrimination, all invention appears a privilege of those able to postpone, true only for the first sense. For the second sense, invention as response to un-integrable excess, the opposite holds. Unprivileged systems invent no less: inventing under greater pressure because postponement is no option. Lacking resources to document, institutionalise, disseminate invention is a subsequent issue, a matter of power and recognition, not capacity. Confusing lack of recognition with lack of operation is an analytical error political diagnosis cannot afford.

3.2. Excess as a Driver: Adversity Amplifies Need

Operative excess is not a problem created by lack of challenge. That is a bourgeois progress narrative assuming stable, comfortable systems lack external stimulation and invention emerges answering a void needing filling. False. Excess is a constitutive condition of all sufficiently complex material organisation. More functional compatibilities exist available than current configuration updates. Unfilled space, unrealised potential, un-integrated compatibilities always remain. Normal regime of reality. Systems in relative stability maintain a proportion where pressing excess quantity is small compared to processable volume. Ignoring excess, leaving it latent, processing slowly without crisis. Systems in crisis face more un-integrable excess because prevailing regime reaches saturation and imminent collapse. Not because no excess existed prior, it existed. Because processing capacity without deep re-organisation vanished.

Crucial inversion: crisis creates not invention anew. Invention is constitutive of any regime facing excess. Crisis amplifies visibility, forces inscription, renders ignoring impossible. Motor shifts not; operating regime becomes obvious by ceasing silent maintenance. A system in relative comfort operates with continuous invention occurring invisibly, small innovations, local adjustments, re-configurations unnoticed because un-disturbing stability image maintained by regime. Same invention in system under crisis becomes visible, urgent, documented because system must name actions to re-organise at necessary speed.

Gilbert Simondon formulated the problem precisely: individuation is not a process systems perform under favourable conditions. It is the operation whereby systems constitute themselves as systems. A system failing to individuate, failing to resolve internal constitutive tensions producing new form, maintains not stability: disintegrates. Invention as symbolic re-organisation functions analogously. Not an option exercised when resources exist: persistence operation. Hannah Arendt termed this natality, action capacity introducing unexpected, beginning un-determined things. Yet Arendt anchored natality in human plurality, public sphere, mutual recognition. Present argument is more material: symbolic re-organisation is persistence condition of any system facing un-integrable excess, independent of plurality or recognition. Plasticity is a property prior to politics; politics occurs when plasticity is available.

Common objection: adversity demands merely survival and basic reproduction energy, not invention. Assuming adversity reduces symbolic re-organisation need when dramatically amplifying it. A system under extreme pressure collapses or invents. No third option. Jazz and blues emerged not despite slavery, but because of it, total prior inscription destruction. Slavery forbade African languages, suppressed religions, dissolved families, destroyed collective memory transmission modes. Destruction and trauma. Leaving immense excess: lived experience no available form integrated, symbolic matter un-processable by inherited regime because assassinated. Subsequent symbolic re-organisation, jazz, blues, syncretic religions, new oral practices invention, was no aesthetic choice of those with leisure for superfluous exploration. Forced persistence operation of a cultural system lacking alternative through prior system destruction.

Radically altering political and economic narrative. Not 'giving' creativity to the poor as an external gift or property transferred from elites. Recognising poverty and adversity force permanent creativity, populations under maximum pressure invent as symbolic and material survival operation, asking why invention is ignored, discredited, un-recognised as legitimate intelligence by official inscription regimes. Not a capacity problem. Power problem: documentation power, circulation power, official knowledge inscription power.

Ontological plasticity is the possibility condition for this re-organisation operation. Plasticity is not a property of stabilised systems nor exclusive capacity of culturally favoured elites. It is the capacity of any system to re-organise into new forms without reliance upon fixed essences condemning it to a single configuration. A system losing plasticity, rigidifying, closing inscription forms against excess pressure, survives not. Independent of accumulated wealth. History documents aristocracies collapsing from symbolic rigidity when reached by excess, and material-lacking communities persisting through inventiveness lacking alternative exit. Plasticity is no privilege: material condition answering growing pressure. Property of systems maintaining openness, recognising present functioning forms may fail tomorrow, possessing variation inscription mechanisms produced by constituents.

Distinction must reject adversity romanticism without rejecting precise diagnosis. Suffering un-celebrated. Poverty un-pretended good, institution destruction un-desirable, collapsing systems un-ideal freedom conditions. Obscenity and ignorance. Diagnosing invention mechanism present intensified, un-absent. Systems under maximum pressure carry greatest un-integrable excess quantity, thus greatest re-organisation need. Destructive pressure forcing creative inscription operation without alternative. Emerging invention carries high density because un-postponable, price of postponement collapse. Adversity un-rendered desirable. Comprehensible mechanism whereby adversity forces operations constituting invention.

3.3. Historical Cases: Jazz, Creole, and mRNA Vaccines

Jazz and blues represent forced symbolic re-organisation, not deliberate creation by subjects in favourable conditions exploring the superfluous. Afro-American population subjected to slavery faced maximum magnitude excess: systematic prior inscription destruction. African languages forbidden, not language freedom restriction, total interdiction, physical punishment for native language usage. Religious systems suppressed or marginalised, forced into syncretism to persist. Family structures dissolved by sale and separation. Collective memory transmission systems severed, oral griot tradition, genealogical continuity, access to founding myths. Resulting in lived experience needing radically new inscription because all prior inscription forms were destroyed or illegalised.

Jazz is no history of geniuses expressing themselves in improbable settings. Collective operation of cultural systems under extreme un-recognition and destruction excess finding form through music because music was a rare domain where prior inscription remained partially possible while other forms were blocked. Inventing new operative domain: rhythm requiring no traditional African instrument forbidden by oppressors (using remnants, marginalised European objects, body, whatever remained). Timbre transforming oppressor inherited materials into own language. Improvisation requiring no prior written composition, functioning as oral transmission over recombined European harmony. Every aspect an answer to excess: African and European rhythm separation, tradition maintenance impossibility, communication need unsatisfied by inherited forms alone. Jazz is invention produced without patronage, institutional resources, favourable conditions, precisely because excess was too vast to ignore and inherited forms insufficient to process.

Density, harmonic sophistication, rhythmic innovation attained by jazz are no evidence that invention occurred despite unfavourable conditions. Evidence that extreme adversity forcing re-organisation without alternative produces high-density forms that leisure permitting postponement rarely produces. Leisure permits slow refinement, dilettante exploration, un-urgent rehearsal. Extreme pressure forces density through lack of time for the dispensable. Every operation must count. Every inscription must function because system depends upon it.

Linguistic creolisation documents same mechanism at a different scale. Mutually unintelligible language speakers placed in forced contact, colonial plantations where enslaved people of varied African origins worked together, slave ports where traders and traded met under extreme communication conditions, compulsory migration situations, no inherited language suffices for demanded communication. Real incompatibility: coloniser speaks Portuguese, French, Spanish; enslaved speaks Yoruba, Kikongo, Bantu, non-ancestral language through far transport. Both groups must communicate about work, resistance, survival. Only words known by enslaved from coloniser language were those used for orders or insults. No formal context where both languages meet and negotiate.

Pidgin emerges: new linguistic system taking words from all contact languages, simplifying grammar to function with fewer inflections (origin languages un-known completely by any speaker), creating new signification modes absent in origin languages. Pidgin is linguistic invention in maximum adversity conditions. If second generation transmission occurs, children born in space where pidgin is dominant language learning as first language, pidgin develops full grammar, flexibility to express subtlety lacking in adult pidgin. Becoming creole. Creole is a complete, structurally coherent language, possessing properties absent in prior systems.

No poetic choice here. No artistic decision to create new things. Urgent communication necessity forcing new linguistic inscription forms. Linguistic elements derive from varied languages through availability and emerging system functional coherence requirement, un-functioning as communication instrument, persisting not. Result is no simplification: re-organisation maintaining precise operative coherence because new system must function better than alternative (inability to communicate). Emerging creole possesses properties contemporary linguistics recognises as sophistication: word structure, concept formation, signification modes innovative through communication pressure demand, un-designed intentionally.

mRNA vaccine offers counter-proof clarifying mechanism in a radically different domain. Technology emerged not answering COVID-19 pandemic. Developed over decades as 'useless' fundamental research, biologists exploring gene expression mechanisms, studying cellular genetic information reading and translation modes, lacking anticipated clinical or commercial application. Fundamental research in purest sense: exploring reality function without immediate utility concern. Maintaining plasticity, holding research system open to seemingly useless paths, never closing possibilities.

Arriving excess, pandemic as planetary re-organisation pressure, vaccine need in months rather than years, system maintaining plasticity responded. Succeeded through pre-existing platform, explored mechanisms via fundamental research, team capacity rapidly mobilising un-applied knowledge. Inverting romantic narrative celebrating creative capacity in crisis response. Crisis created not vaccine. Crisis encountered system pre-prepared with response capacity. Direct political implication: system plasticity is no property arising when excess arrives. Property maintained before excess arrives. Meaning 'useless research', un-applied experimentations, institutional redundancy permitting varied approaches, un-apparent value idea funding, investment in general response capacity. No luxury removed in crisis times. Condition of response capability when crisis occurs.

Political moral: plasticity is inversely proportional to spectacular result at acute moment. Systems maintaining general response capacity, un-applied fundamental research, technical experimentation without commercial pressure, institutional redundancy permitting varied approaches, room for disposable thought lacking apparent utility, react when the new arrives. Completely redefining future investment meaning. Not guessing technology needed in ten years. Maintaining general re-organisation capacity, responding when pressure arrives. Maintaining plasticity un-because specific pandemic anticipated, none anticipated, recognising new arrives un-warned, exact crisis form unpredictable, sole response method to un-anticipable is un-closure of inscription and operation forms before crisis arrives.

3.4. Unfinishedness as Openness: The Political Dimension

True luxury is ability to postpone invention. Not inventing capability, all invent under pressure. Luxury is stating prevailing forms suffice, re-organisation unnecessary, present system continuing as is. System managing non-invention, maintaining present configuration indefinitely, holding prevailing inscription forms stable while facing excess un-exceeding them, system in extraordinary material stability. Rare luxury, practically impossible to maintain over long periods. Demanding isolation from rest of system, external perturbation absence, slow internal death. Most systems face permanent pressure. For these, unfinishedness is no defect to correct: structure rendering emergence possible and continuous.
