1. Against the Guardian Stance

1.1. The guardian as control illusion

Conservationist ethics seeking to preserve humanity, save the planet, or guarantee specific futures rests upon double structural illusion. First: that we know future needs. This fundamental illusion fails because future is non-continuation of pre-existing plans, it is invention executed by non-yet-existing agents under non-given conditions responding to un-anticipated problems. The conservationist presumes knowing essential preservation targets, humanity core, nature, values, whose preservation guarantees future success. Yet this knowledge exists not. Future needs are contingent, un-predicted event functions, responses to crises present generations fail even to imagine. Each generation believes it resolves essential problems, each subsequent generation discovers problems were formulated wrongly, priorities mis-placed, single-thing solutions generating ten unexpected consequences.

Second illusion: possessing power guaranteeing preservation. The guardian presumes present action, well-intentioned and well-planned, controls produced effects. Presumes offering future pre-defined forms, ready meanings, signalled paths. Yet realised operation belongs no longer to actor once completed. Left mark will be future-appropriated, reinterpreted in un-anticipatable contexts, used for ends un-pleasant to know. The guardian believing result-control is necessarily deceived. History offers infinite examples: Western civilisation ideology intended for liberation created colonialism; industrial technique intended for emancipation created exploitation; medicine intended for saving created social control pharmacologies. Not because actors were evil, many were sincere in doing good, but because future operation appropriation ever escapes actor control.

This marks guardian stance as ultimate anthropocentrism form: human as real-protector, knowing persistence truth, possessing right deciding what continues existing. Deeply human gesture, yet denying operation structure: denying every action transforms actor, consequences escape control, future is invention non-continuation. The guardian occupies non-occupiable body stance: seeing whole, knowing correct, directing real toward good. Structurally impossible stance, yet occupying attempt marks human history.

Three historically documented control-illusion forms identify how guardians deceive regarding realised operations:

1. Ecological conservationism presuming "pure nature" prior to human intervention needing original-state restoration. Presumes ideal planet state human action corrupted, correction (city abandonment, technology elimination, pre-industrial return) restoring innocence. Yet "pure nature" exists not, only continuous material reorganisation wherein human was ever part, every living form operation leaving mark. Climate-warming carbon dioxide is material reorganisation existing always; question is non-restoring past nature, but reorganising present conditions knowing result differs from prior forms, non-"returning" to anything. Ecological conservationist confuses original innocence with simplicity, confusing simplicity with stability, when stability is construct, contingent arrangement, form emerging under non-existing specific pressures.
2. Transhumanism presuming technological "upgrade" is ever for better, cognitive amplification, life extension, death elimination advancing toward human fulfilment. Yet "better" presupposes evaluation criteria nobody legitimately possesses. Transhumanist presumes knowing what human should become, knowing death is absolute evil, expanded cognition ever desirable, machine-part biological replacement advantageous. Nobody knows this. Future may discover death was necessary condition for meaning forms, expanded cognition brings unexpected suffering, total technology dependence created unknown vulnerabilities predecessors never predicted. Transhumanist believes walking good path, realising operation future appropriation un-anticipatable, gesture consequences reinterpreted destroying hopes if known.
3. Critical post-humanism presuming human dissolution into relation networks, humanist subjectivity deconstruction, centre-less pluralisation is ever "liberation" or "justice." Presumes fixed oppressive human identity, essential human nature blocking equality, deconstruction emancipatory. Yet categories, liberation, justice, equality, are symbols whose meaning persists not when creating forms cease existing. If human form mutates or vanishes, what signifies "human liberation"? Whose liberation if no human experiences it? What signifies "justice" if recognition structures giving meaning dissolved? Critical post-humanist believes fighting oppression, anticipating un-controllable future, offering symbols revealing empty when sustaining form mutates.

All three cases, conservationism, transhumanism, post-humanism, share fundamental presumption: knowing what salvaging, eliminating, which direction future should take. Presumption ever illusion. The guardian in any form renounces knowledge-limit clarity, standing outside time, transformation, contingency structuring all operation.

The guardian presumes knowing the end before perceiving the process, believing possessing answers before comprehending questions future will formulate.

Guardian fundamental error: believing identity between intention and result, desired production matching produced reality, action-attributed meaning matching future-reinterpreted meaning. Deeply confuses symbolic regime (choosing meaning, naming intention, declaring purpose, enforcing definition) with material regime (operation producing un-known effects, consequences reinterpreting intention un-recognisably, leaving mark whose material life is independent). Guardian illusion: believing mastered symbolic dimension (spoken words, handled concepts, declared values) controls material dimension preceding and sustaining symbolisation (realised operation, left mark, future receiving mark). Order inverted: material operation leaves mark future reads through proper symbolic frameworks (different from mine), reinterpreting per proper needs (non-mine), appropriating un-imaginably.

Guardian confuses meaning-power with structure-power. Naming action (symbolic power possessed); un-controlling left mark signification (material impossibility future imposes). Ecological conservationist declares "pure nature restoration" purpose (symbolic naming power), left mark incorporated per un-controlled structures (un-predictable material powers). Transhumanist writes manifestos declaring "human improvement" project (symbolic project power), result appropriated by social/technical systems remaking project un-recognisably. Critical post-humanist declares "anthropocentrism rejection" (symbolic critique power), political structures emerging operating per un-predictable logics.

1.2. What cannot be known

Three fundamental items cannot be known, forming epistemological foundation for non-illusion ethics:

First: future needs. Future is invention by non-yet-existing agents under non-currently-given material pressures, responding to crises whose formulation alters by producing events. Agents under un-anticipatable technical, social, environmental configurations. Responding to un-imaginable dangers emerging when conditions install, nobody sees danger before irruption. Resolving problems whose formulation transforms by resolution efforts. How knowing what unborn creature under non-given conditions needs to thrive or survive? How presuming present-problem solutions will be accepted as adequate?

Guardian presumes: offering best present work, maximum quality, care, risk-anticipation. Confuses local quality offering with global adequacy presumption. Offering well-made, extremely attentive, genuinely careful work, yet completely wrong regarding future needs. Technological solution resolving present problem creates ten new un-predicted problems emerging when solution disseminates into infrastructures. Defended present value becomes irrelevant within two generations when sustaining material structures vanish. Preserved essential form reveals contingent luxury existing under specific vanished regime. Future will tell, afterward, when late for course correction, impossible to undo left mark.

Second: whether present actions yield "good" or acceptable consequences per proper criteria. Gesture consequence appropriated by un-controlled future, reinterpreted in un-imaginable contexts un-recognisable as present context variants. Master giving book to student knows not whether student becomes truth-spreading sage or truth-killing fanatic. Mother teaching compassion knows not whether child uses compassion comforting injured or manipulating vulnerable into dependent comfort. Inventor creating powerful tool knows not whether building or destroying, liberating or imprisoning, expanding or reducing capacities through dependency. Consequence ceases belonging to actor upon action completion. Afterward: future appropriation, radical reinterpretation, meaning displacement original producer never anticipated or accepted.

Guardian presumes controlling this: planning well, anticipating risks, consulting expertise, gathering multiple perspectives, guiding consequence to victory-accepted result. Yet control actions generate un-predicted secondary effects. Consulted specialisation possesses structural biases, blind spots un-seen due to object proximity, training limits. Risk-anticipation leaves blind spots, anticipatable risks are those possessing prior language and concepts; devastating risks lack formulation due to missing prior experience. Emerging after decision, infrastructure construction, path closure.

Result: guardian control efforts guarantee violated expectations un-anticipatably. History demonstrates infinitely: control attempts create new contingency fields. Infection-controlling antibiotic created resistance. Order-seeking urban planning created ghettos. Union-seeking communication technology created bubbles. Power-neutral algorithm reproduced/amplified asymmetries designed to resolve. Not because actors were evil (many dedicated to good), but because operation structure guarantees future-appropriated consequences are un-mastered present reinterpretations.

The more the guardian attempts predicting the future, the more effectively blinded to what actually arrives.

Third: whether emerging form remains recognisable as "human" per present criteria. Human form is non-fixed essence persisting across transformations, it is process, inscription, operation realising under specific material constraints. Constraints change constantly: human-extending technique extends until result is un-received as human. Thought conceiving humanity as category discovers thought-forms destabilising human meaning, rendering category irrelevant or obsolete. If form is contingent, lacking fixed essence, recognition persistence is un-guaranteed; next generation accepts different human definition, future uses same word designating different properties.

Guardian presumes fixable, preservable, intact-transferable "humanity." Yet if life is function without fixed substrate, thought reorganisation without necessary subject, form transitory configuration meta-stable between moment-sustaining forces, humanity to preserve exists not. Only operation realising under specific conditions. Operation generating new operations, recognisable or un-recognisable forms, gestures continuing or obliterating marks.

Genuine ethical responsibility begins when simultaneously renouncing three knowledge pretensions. Responsibility ceases being self-inflicted guilt burden (failing future guarantee = moral failure, shame) becoming simple operational clarity (realising maximum quality possible, accepting un-controlled future appropriation). Maximum responsibility regime: no confirmation-promise attachment justifying present suffering. No successful-future ghost compensating hard work, renunciation, sacrifice. No pena-justifying future redemption. Only structural clarity: operation leaves irreversible mark, mark conditions future possibility fields, future decides mark use, future reinterpretations un-predicted and un-controlled.

Deep regime change: guilt-responsibility (responsible for guaranteeing result) $\rightarrow$ clarity-responsibility (responsible for mark-leaving operation quality, non-future mark use). Intensifies responsibility: mark quality matters now non-because recognised (may not be), non-because future values (may reject), but because quality mark leaves space for future work, creative reinterpretation, fruitful future negation. Negligent, hurried, inattentive mark leaves inert weight, obstacle to destroy or overcome. Rigorous mark leaves retakable, transformable, creatively appropriable mark.

1.3. Ethics without a stable foundation

Western ethical tradition sought foundation across multiple registers, desperately seeking solid bedrock supporting moral buildings against material contingency winds. Every ethical school offered guarantee structures: anchoring ethics in God (acting well = eternal salvation, infernal condemnation, cosmic necessity); universal reason (correct reasoning = necessary correct action, pure logic geometry consequences); measurable consequence (utilitarian utility maximisation = general flourishing, precise calculation objective criterion); social contract (agreed common rules = cooperation and guaranteed order); practical reason (universalisable maxims = categorical imperative flourishing). Shared characteristic: presuming structure transcending material contingency, principle persisting independently of body transformations. God persisted. Reason persisted. Utility possessed objective meaning. Contract survived signatories. Categorical imperative universal and atemporal. Reassuring guarantee sanctuaries where action rested, trusted, recognised adequacy to real.

Yet if nothing guarantees permanence, if human form is un-guaranteed contingency, consequences escape control, future is un-anticipatable reinterpreting invention, no stable foundation supports elegantly architected ethical constructions. God-anchored ethics collapses when divinity ceases evidence, cosmic silence admits no theological interpretation. Kantian universal-reason ethics collapses when discovering reason is changing-body function, transcendental subject fiction, autonomy illusion. Utilitarian ethics collapses when discovering well-being un-quantifiable objectively, happiness non-simple sum, maximising one aspect reducing another. Contractual ethics collapses when discovering contract is un-guaranteed symbolic fiction, non-signatories (future generations, non-humans, excluded) suffering un-negotiated effects.

Non-moral relativism, non-affirming equal action validity, absent good/evil criteria, arbitrary choices. Clear, uncomfortable recognition that ethics operates in radical contingency, no transcendental foundation guarantees desired action effect, no universal principle assures future-shared values, carefully built moral structures rest over un-reachable abyss.

Foundation collapse points: theologian presumes God offers objective good/evil criteria, yet conflicting theological traditions (Christian denominations disagreeing on compassion vs. obedience, religions claiming divine speech with incompatible conclusions, theodicy failing to explain material evil without logical/moral self-contradiction) reveal divine foundation as symbolic structure un-governing real operation, un-resolving material conflict lacking real access. Kantian presumes universal transcendental reason, yet discovering reasoning subject is particular body, defended universality is historical particularity, categorical imperative justified slavery and abolition, reasoning form changes per material body configuration (intact vs. damaged brain, child vs. adult, living human vs. computing machine), rational universality reveals transcendence illusion, symbolic-detaching presumption. Utilitarian presumes quantifying/maximising objective well-being, yet discovering one body's good implies another's real suffering, happiness irreduceably multiple/contradictory, material good maximisation reducing freedom, life-quantity increase rarely maintaining quality, objective criterion collapses into perspective relativity, un-anchored symbolic project. Contractualist presumes agreed contract legitimately binds future, yet discovering contract is paper symbolic artefact tearable/reinterpretable, unborn inheriting generations lacked signing/refusing possibility, non-humans suffering contract effects (altered climate, extinct species, destroyed ecosystems) lacked negotiation voice, agreement language presupposes contract-founding symbolic, contract authority reveals un-consenting power.

Foundation exists not, or exists only in body-projected symbolic dimension, missing in material dimension requiring organisation, constraint, direction. Disjunction between dimensions irremediable and structural. Ethics operates in symbolic dimension with full rigour, establishing coherent principles, arguing with flawless logic, constructing mutually demonstrating thought structures. Yet symbolic coherence governs not material operation. Material operation follows non-coinciding configuration laws: leaving un-intended marks, generating un-anticipated consequences, transforming agent un-recognisably to original formulator. Symbolic foundation is ethics condition, non-result guarantee.

Defending moral value = realising genuine real-effect symbolic operation whose future appropriation is un-controlled. Acting per ethical principle = realising irreversible mark-leaving material operation whose future reinterpretation is un-anticipated. Building ethical structure = participating in persisting symbolic creation transformed, denied, surpassed un-recognisably.

Ethical responsibility is maximal in this situation: lacking result-guaranteeing, good-recognising, continuation-assuring foundation, yet responsibility exists. Non-because universe demands (universe indifferent to human morality). Non-because reason commands (reason is local particular-body function). Non-because promised reward (zero reward guarantee). Responsibility exists because operation leaves irreversible mark, inescapable continuity links present act and future self, produced inscription persists independently of producer, desirer, controller.

Sufficient foundation. Non-consoling, promising no compensated effort or redeemed death. Non-secure, offering abyss rest. Simple, structural, naked responsibility: realised operation leaves permanent mark, future receives mark reinterpreting per proper needs, operation demands maximum quality non-because guaranteeing good result, but because quality mark leaves space for future work, creative reinterpretation, fertile future negation. Non-hoping confirming result, but crystal clarity that every operation weighs, every mark persists, every symbolic inscription leaves future-carried vestige.

Different from despair (presumings nothing matters, empty, death renders all useless). Different from absolute ethical scepticism (presuming equal action validity, un-founded reason, arbitrary choices). Precise, affirmative recognition that foundation is un-necessary for responsibility, missing universal foundation implies non-nothing-matters or all-permitted. Conversely: when foundation vanishes, responsibility emerges in pure form, without excuses or refuge.

Responsibility needs no validating God, existing in indifferent universe, opinionless cosmos. Needs no justifying universal reason, existing when discovering reason is function, evolution product, material configuration. Needs no confirming measurable consequence, existing when consequences are unpredictable, uncontrollable. Needs no authorising social contract, existing in pre-agreement solidarity. Responsibility needs only this: operation leaves irreversible mark, mark is persisting gesture, future carries and depends on mark, no return point exists, every operation matters because every mark weighs on subsequent reality. Sufficient foundation for maximal ethics, non-consoling, non-promising, but recognising permanent weight of human action, inscription irreversibility, clarity-emerging responsibility.

Refusing guardian stance, refusing future-control presumption, preserving-at-all-costs knowledge, good-intention-guarantees-good-result, is non-resignation or abandonment. Non-responsibility renunciation. Exact opposite: true liberation from guardian-imposed burden. Renouncing future-control illusion, dropping knowledge pretension, accepting future appropriation as un-anticipatable reinterpretation, responsibility ceases being self-inflicted guilt burden (un-matched future = my failure/shame) becoming pure operation, act without parasite moral weight.

Guardian suffers specific burden resulting from stance: presuming eternal self-justification to future, guaranteeing vindicating decisions, offering un-contradictable wisdom proof. Unsustainable presumption assuming cascading impossibilities: anticipating future judgment criteria (knowing unknown), answering un-formulated questions (answer before question), satisfying non-existing needs (future real anticipation). Guardian carries eternal guilt failing self-built impossible standard. Living in perpetual failure state defining success as impossible.

Responsible actor renounces future-justification illusion from start. Seeking no future validation. Offering no advance excuses. Attempting no persuasion of future correctness. Realising operation with maximum clarity of radical transformation, reinterpretation per un-established present criteria, appropriation destroying actor hopes if result known. Clarity is freedom: non-abandoning responsibility, but reorganising on material instead of symbolic bases, anchoring in real operation instead of cosmic approval hope.

Realised operation transforms realising body, demonstrated across multiple registers. Re-thinking thinker is un-identical to starting thinker: thought reorganises neural connections, changes problem dispositions, opens/closes future thought possibilities. Working hand acquires un-possessed dexterity, un-existing muscle, prior-impossible precision: work inscribes operation memory in body. Suffering body is modified by suffering experience: non-returning to prior state, incapable of un-knowing discovered vulnerability, incapable of restoring pain-lost innocence. Irreversible transformation, acting body returns not to prior state, un-learning learned items, un-knowing known items. Left mark necessarily conditions subsequent reality.

Conditioning functions across multiple levels:

Direct level: present-opened/closed possibilities determine future action frameworks. Scientific discovery closed paths (un-needing question re-visiting) and opened others (viable new questions). Political decision eliminated options (tested failed model) and created others (new precedent, new possible). Art piece demonstrated prior-invisible beauty, enabling future appropriating/reacting forms.

Structural level: inscription reduces field entropy, un-determining result (impossible), but determining future-received possibility field, reducing unproductive paths, opening fertile ones, rendering forms thinkable/un-thinkable. Non-because future is trapped (ever free reinterpreting past), but working with present-left material conditioning subsequent possible gestures.

Sufficient foundation for maximal responsibility: absolute structure clarity (every action transforms, mark is irreversible, opened possibilities exclude others, operation leaves un-erasable traces) demands doing well, maximum quality, robust mark future appropriates without suffering present negligence consequences. Non-guaranteeing future (impossible guardian reproduction), but leaving retakable, creatively reinterpretable, un-trapped mark future transforms without spending energy repairing negligent predecessor errors. When guardian releases control, abandons pre-conceived plan, recognises transformation, welcomes change, space opens for genuine responsibility: material clarity non-moral burden.

Liberation: control renunciation transforms responsibility from heavy confirming-result hope (convincing future = meaningful life) into simple operational clarity. Responsible actor feels no guilt if result un-matches expectations, never expected perfect match, accepted radical reinterpretation. Feels no hope, hope is luxury of those who presume they know the future and can predict their impact on the field. Responsible actor realises operation with maximum clarity: extreme care (result matters eternally), rigour (refusing negligence), quality-attention. Leaving future to do as wished, reinterpreting per needs, transforming beyond prediction. Control renunciation is gain: liberation from guardian perpetual guilt.

Transition to Section 2: if ethics is non-guardian future-directing, non-obsessive attachment to pre-determined results, non-hope of future validation, what is it? Action knowing actor transforms by realised operation, consequences reinterpreted destroying hopes if known, future telling un-predicted truths. Ethics is realising operation knowing result will un-match expectations, realising nevertheless, not out of heroism seeking recognition, nor out of martyrdom seeking cosmic compensation, but through structure clarity: present-future continuity is sufficient foundation for maximal responsibility, left mark ever weighs, operation matters because zero guarantee exists that future values it as present actor wished.

2. Acting Without Guarantee

2.1. Maximal responsibility

Ethical responsibility is maximal precisely when renouncing all traditional refuges, abandoning security built protecting morality from radical contingency winds. Pure intention cannot defend, intention realised by body transformed by action, future intention of transformed body differs from present intention, acting person differs from consequence-receiving person. Good-intention body transformed, learned, acquired new knowledge, no return. Innocence destroyed. Present intention justifies not action lived by radically different future intention.

Excursion: Maximal Responsibility Toward the Vulnerable Future

Hans Jonas (The Imperative of Responsibility) argues responsibility is maximal toward future generations because un-able to defend themselves, un-participating in present decisions, suffering un-chosen action consequences. Jonas argues via "fear heuristics": acting with fear of disastrous consequences because fear forces genuine responsibility, protecting against dangerous optimism.

Convergence: Jonas correctly intuits responsibility is maximal when future is defenceless, vulnerable to present operations, receiving un-chosen marks. Future vulnerability founds present responsibility. Divergence: Jonas presumes responsibility is preservation responsibility, guarding humanity for future, essential human nature deserving preservation. Re-installs guardian stance: responsible guardian of humanity for future generations.

Present formulation refuses guardian stance even well-intentioned. Responsibility toward future is responsibility leaving robust mark future retakes, denies, transforms un-trapped by present negligence. Non-preserving humanity (illusion lacking fixable essence). Leaving creative-use inscription. Fear is non-destroying humanity fear, leaving negligent mark future cannot productively use fear. Future vulnerability demands maximum quality, non-fixed-form preservation.

Autonomy cannot defend, autonomy ever conditioned by prior reorganisation, received body form via education, practices, symbolic inscriptions moulding thought structure. Material history moulded present neural structure, realised operations left irreversible marks on actor. Apparent autonomy is present configuration of history-left constraints. Operating within history-offered configuration. Choosing within constraints, choice non-free, non-originating, ever conditioned.

Choice freedom cannot guarantee, choice limited by body capacity, history-opened/closed horizons, eliminated options from prior decisions. Decisions close paths permanently. Intellectual-career choosing student loses genuine artisan-career possibility, hand/mind moulded by reading/writing. Marriage-committing person eliminates errant-freedom options, body involved in constraining relation networks. Mark-leaving inscription leaves un-erasable mark. Freedom is freedom within growing constraints, limited as time passes and decisions accumulate. Body material history is progressive closure history, open possibilities closing when choosing alternatives.

Crucial distinction: freedom is non-possessed/maintained thing, progressively lost while acting. Every action steals future freedom. Language-learned body loses equal-fluency second-language learning capacity. Technique-trained musician faces conflict learning alternative techniques. Life is progressive possibility reduction through choice accumulation. Non-bad, structure: finite freedom because decision costs future freedom.

Universality cannot defend, universal presupposes identical-persisting subject across contexts, maintaining structure across radical transformations, retaining intention post-learning, suffering, transformation. No body is such, no human form such. Universality is elegant symbolic fiction presuming non-existing material essence persistence. Functions in abstraction, logical theory, symbolic realm, fails in acting/suffering matter.

Removing universality, renouncing universal-principle action presumption (shared by rational creatures if healthy/well-formed), leaves actor alone with particular decision, contingent operation, non-universal mark, mine, here, now, in unique, non-repeatable, non-generable body.

Liberating and terrifying. Liberating: un-needing action justification against un-satisfiable universal criteria. Terrifying: no universal shield, action purely mine, left mark purely my responsibility, no protecting abstraction.

Without refuges, pure intention, autonomy, absolute freedom, universality, responsibility is naked, pure, structural, inescapable. Acting body realises action transforming body immediately and irreversibly. Transformed body un-identical to acting body, different organisation, new constraint configuration, managing left operative excess as permanent tissue mark. Action consequences appropriated by future body (radically different, action-transformed, capacity/limitation-learned body) un-predictably and un-controllably. Open, contingent, future-determined by who future becomes, relating to present mark, attributing meanings.

Inescapable structure: no innocence in responsible gesture because responsibility is innocence loss, no action leaves actor in prior form, no gesture leaves structure un-transformed. Responsible actor is non-result-guaranteeing (impossible, self-deceiving presumption). Responsible actor recognises transformation, realises operation with maximum quality, lacking reward hope, control illusion, with absolute irreversibility clarity. Responsibility is maximal because realised without good-recognition promise, wise-saying hope, intended-consequence illusion, head-resting refuge.

Radical shift in ethics conception. Traditional ethics protected actor, Greek virtue (personal excellence), Christian (soul salvation), Kantian (rational dignity). Horizon: actor perfection, purification, elevation. Genuine responsibility is exact opposite: accepting zero protection, actor destroyed by operation, no maintaining sanctuary. True responsibility is living death, death of innocent self, un-acting self, transformation-ignorant self.

Being responsible is acting knowing action destroys actor innocence forever, no restoration possible, no posterior salvation undoing left mark.

2.2. The operation of knowledge

Responsible action is knowledge operation, non-meaning prior knowledge is correct or following validated rulebook. Realised with structural clarity of irreversible mark-leaving, actor-transforming, future-carried operation. Knowledge operation because lucid regarding operation structure, non-certain of result, non-confident of good intentions.

Essential distinction between two action modes: action realised from prior knowledge (knowing rules, applying, expecting result) vs. action as knowledge operation (realising action, knowing operation-governing structure through realisation).
