1.1. The Invisible Presupposition: Genealogical Diagnosis
Examining the philosophical and historical sedimentation of the persistence presupposition requires careful traversal of a broad genealogy reaching modern Western philosophy's foundations. Modern philosophy, from the seventeenth century to present days, operated with a silent, naturalised assumption equivalent to assuming gravity works: the human exists as an integrated unit, an identifiable, continuous form through time, a reality studyable, analysable, definable, improvable, transformable. This assumption was uncontroversial, functioning as a virtually invisible condition for philosophical thought. It was so deeply sedimented that proposing its refusal seemed absurd, as if proposing gravity might not be a force.
Renaissance humanism centred upon extraordinary human value and singular dignity, artistic and intellectual creation capacities, world-refiguring capacities through imagination and technique. But it operated with a deep presupposition that the human existed, possessed proper form, identifiable properties rendering it distinct and superior to other forms. Humanism questioned not human existence, it celebrated it.
Seventeenth-century philosophy, from Descartes to Leibniz and Spinoza, debated fundamental mind and matter nature, relation between res cogitans (thinking thing) and res extensa (extended thing). Descartes operated assuming consciousness exists, a thinking "I" exists, and this consciousness is the human's distinctive property (or at least thinking substance's). Leibniz offered monadology where each monad possesses clarity and distinction degrees, human beings being monads with intelligence and reflection. Spinoza refused Cartesian duality yet assumed substance modes exist comprehendible as human. In all these philosophies, both camps, whether dividing in Cartesian dichotomy or refusing it, operated assuming the human was a distinct reality, proper reality, deserving philosophical attention due to unique properties and capacities.
Hegel offers a masterly, clear example of this sedimentation by elevating it to a system. For Hegel, the human is self-consciousness, consciousness knowing itself and realising progressively through universal history. The human form is no contingency capable of vanishing or ceasing sense, it is the necessary manifestation of a rational process governing all history. The human realises because Spirit (Geist) exists, reason working through history, forcing progressive freedom, self-determination, consciousness manifestation. No human abandonment occurs in Hegelian philosophy, progressive elevation, increasingly complete realisation of humanity-defining capacities occurs. Spirit guarantees form persistence, guarantees human non-disappearance, because human persistence is Spirit's historical incarnation operation.
Nietzsche offered fundamental critique to Hegel yet maintained, paradoxically, the human existence presupposition. He refused Hegelian teleology, denying history marches necessarily toward consciousness and freedom realisation. But proposed the human must be overcome, surpassed, elevated beyond itself in a tragic, difficult process requiring will-to-power exercise. The human remained starting point and measure, the launching point for overcoming. A clear genealogy exists: the human was a herd animal bound to weakness values, then overman creation becomes possible, new value creation, life affirmation beyond constraining moral limitations. Yet across this dramatic transformation narrative, the human persists as that which is questioned, surpassed, transcended, not as that which could simply cease being because conditions for form emergence or persistence ended.
Freud brought the unconscious to the philosophy of the human with revolutionary impact. He demonstrated, or forcefully argued, that the human is drive, desire, mechanism operation escaping consciousness, internal mental operations lacking self-knowledge, internally divided such that complete self-transparency is impossible. This demolished rational subject transparency. Yet unconscious remains persistent human structure. The unconscious vanishes not, ceases operation not, it is a permanent, constitutive human form property. Freud's discovery was that human mind layers exist lacking self-knowledge, yet they are human mind layers. The form persists, merely more complex, opaque to itself, traversed by uncomprehended forces.
Heidegger offered an even more radical question: the human is that "for whom being is a question," whose essence is ever questioning proper existence and real existence, whose fundamental openness is toward difference between particular entities and manifest being. This is deep ontological singularity, the human is defined by a privileged relation to the being question, capacity to interrogate. Yet definition preserves the human as singular, possessing specific, irreducible property distinguishing it from other forms. The form is guaranteed, perhaps threatened by modern technology, forgotten of essence and condemned to anonymous "they", yet human as question-I-am, as Dasein, persists as ontological structure.
Wittgenstein approached via language. For Wittgenstein, human is fundamentally language-using being, participating in reality-structuring "language games." No direct access to real outside language exists, only diverse language uses equally valid in different contexts. The human is a linguistic form. Yet this form is guaranteed, functioning as self-presupposition.
Lévi-Strauss and structuralism offered radical critique retaining presupposition: human is subject to preceding unconscious structures, language, kinship, myth structures. The human believes it chooses, thinks freely, but is a puppet of sub-conscious operating structures. Radical humanism critique, of autonomous choosing subject. Yet human persists as structured entity, whose freedom illusion can be unmasked. Form remains reference point.
Each tradition offers deep critiques to predecessors, challenging prior human nature assumptions with astounding rigour, exposing complexity and contradiction dimensions invisible previously. Yet all, and this is this chapter's critical diagnosis, maintain a unifying fundamental presupposition: "human" exists analyzeable, interrogatable, comprehendible, transformable, surpassable, dissolvable. Presupposition is no flaw, result of millennia of cultural and ontological sedimentation where lived experience offers data confirming persistence. The human persisted until now, recognises itself across generations, millennia history is human variation history maintaining mutual recognisability, suggesting underlying form persisting through transformation. Properties inherited genetically and culturally exist. Structural continuity despite phenomenal change exists.
Presupposition offers deep psychological comfort and structuring. If fixed human essence exists, "human nature" defining species members, something shared exists despite radical differences across cultures, epochs, contexts, individuals. Presupposition grounds universal morality, context-transcending rights, if human rights exist, fundamental human properties justify and demand protection. Human rights universalism rests firmly on "human" existence assumption whose dignity deserves unconditional protection. Politically powerful, ethically significant. Grounds justice claims against powers denying specific population humanity, reclassifying them as sub-human for exploitation or death.
Yet presupposition supplies domination and hierarchy instruments. Claimable, and systematically claimed, that certain groups, populations, categories are "less human," deserving lesser protections, closer to animality, lacking rational capacity, innate morality, dignity. Same fixed form assumption offering universalism supplies hierarchy and exclusion operation. Colonialism operated arguing colonised populations were "less human," un-achieved human level colonisers attained. Racism operates arguing certain human groups possess inferior properties, less intelligent, rational, self-determining. Sexism argues certain categories, women, possess different or inferior human properties, more natural, less rational, bodily, less abstract. Each oppression system rests on measurable human properties distributed unequally, justifying hierarchy.
1.2. Historical Realisation, Not Necessary Realisation
The human form is a unique historical realisation of a structural possibility. Proposition deserves careful examination, "realisation" misreadable as "necessary end achievement," as if history marched inevitably toward human, universe endowed with teleology pulling toward human. Un-intended meaning here. "Realisation" means specifically: form emerged under specific conditions, particular sequence of accumulated contingencies, local selective pressures, such that had any contingency differed, marginally, insignificantly, form had un-emerged, radically different form emerged, or nothing emerged.
Form is contingent, meaning logically un-necessary, no mechanism obliging existence, no sufficient reason in Leibnizian sense explaining why form had to emerge. Distinguished from possible. Human was possible, physics, chemistry, biology structures permit organism emergence with human traits: symbolic abstraction capacity, infinite-recursivity language, cultural transmission, complex artefact production, environment modification capacities. Material universe conditions prevented not form emergence, constants and laws permit carbon, complex molecular structures, nervous system organisms. Yet "possible" is not "necessary." Possibility obliges not realisation. Among many material possibilities sequences, one specific, series of accidents, coincidences, improbable events, produced human.
Contingency possesses multiple intertwining layers. First: astronomical and cosmic contingency. Asteroid impact sixty-six million years ago eliminating avian dinosaurs, creating mammal diversification conditions, accident, not necessity. Had asteroid trajectory differed marginally, impacted elsewhere, or un-impacted, dinosaurs persisted, avian birds dominated terrestrial ecological space, mammals remained small, nocturnal, ecologically marginal, primate-producing diversification un-occurred. No primates, no hominid lineage, no humans. Form suspended on astronomical chance, dependent on un-predictable, un-controllable event.
Second layer: genetic contingency. Specific point mutation sequence producing human brain structure, permitting recursive language neural circuits, counterfactual abstract thought. Each mutation rarely realised event, specific mutation probability in specific genome position extraordinarily low. Human brain producing mutation sequence extraordinarily improbable, favourable dice roll series exiting precisely to produce result. Had one mutation failed, differed, occurred elsewhere, removed by natural selection instead of preserved, trajectory radically altered. Specifically human capacities, infinite-recursivity language generating infinite meanings from finite elements, counterfactual/possible-worlds thought capacity, long-term memory integrated with continuous learning capacity, rarely realised biological possibilities combinations.
Third layer: historical and climate contingency. Specific climate transformation sequence in East Africa during last millions of years, temperature and precipitation fluctuations creating savannas where tropical forest existed, fragmenting forest habitats into isolated vegetation islands. Fragmentation created new selective pressure, ancestral primates inhabiting forests forced adapting semi-arid environments. Hominid population migration across African continent, specific routes taken, population encounters and fusions, each contingent, each differable. Had climate fluctuated differently, precipitation differed at critical moment, selective pressures differed, evolutionary trajectory differed. Modern Homo sapiens emerges approximately three hundred thousand years ago not by necessity, cosmic telos, but specific climate changes, food resource availability, random hominid population variation, un-predictable events combination.
Simultaneous operation of all contingencies, astronomical chance, genetic mutation, historical selective pressure convergence, produces retroactive necessity effect. Looking back, seeing human present existence, real form continuing, thinking inevitably: this had to be, inevitable, cosmic destiny. Cosmic design argument performs precisely this, reading contingent events sequence as necessary sequence, universe predisposed from beginning producing conscious observers, intelligent life, humans. Illusion of perspective, potent illusion nonetheless. Because human exists now, looking back at producing cause sequence, seems, with convincing force, each step oriented toward final result. Illusion deep, ordinary mind takes for truth: history read as progress, each innovation bringing us closer to ourselves, each evolution stage necessary step leading to us.
Proposed thesis inverse to retroactive illusion: were event sequence rewound, starting anew at beginning, history unfolding again from prior point, human emerging probability infinitesimal. Probability not merely low, virtually zero. Not merely human, any intelligent form with human-recognisable characteristics extraordinarily improbable. Contingent realisation producing human result of accidents, coincidences, improbable events series, replicated, producing radically different result or nothing absolutely.
Recognition dissolves, or should dissolve, destiny, telos, cosmic finality illusion pulling history toward human. No telos. No finality guiding evolution. No mechanism guaranteeing form continuation. Continuous matter rearrangement under invariant physical constraints, process never directed toward end, producing novelties by complex contingency (chance, random variation) and constraint (physics laws, thermodynamic principles, local selective pressures) combination. Human one such novelty, extraordinary, complex, symbolic calculation capable, meaning creation. Novelty, not culmination. Bifurcation among many possible, not necessary step in un-predetermined sequence.
1.3. Molecular Biology and Contingent Palimpsest
The human genome is a document inscribing contingency in material, readable form, molecular writing of life's history. Forty-two percent of human genome consists of integrated retroviral sequences. Nearly half genetic message defining human composed of virus fragments inserting ancestral human DNA tens of millions of years ago. Non-small or marginal insertions, transformations potentially lethal, reproductive system destroying, selected against and rapidly eliminated. Un-eliminated, retained, progressively integrated into genomic functioning circuits, repurposed for new non-viral functions.
Genome is palimpsest in precise sense: document where prior writing layers persist physically and functionally under new writing. Prior writing un-erased, incorporated, recontextualised such that isolated, malign viral operation becomes integrated human genomic functioning component. Pattern, reusing material produced for completely different functions, general genome evolution pattern. Human DNA un-designed anew, integrated coherent system from start. Reuses modules, sequences, operators originating in deep evolution times, archaea, bacteria, unicellular organisms, ancestral life forms almost unimaginable from human perspective.
Pseudogenes supply clear, transparent material palimpsest evidence. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences functional in ancestors, coding proteins necessary for organism survival or successful reproduction. In modern human lineage, mutations accumulated over millions of years, sequence lost functional protein coding capacity, transformed into pseudogene, DNA fragment doing nothing, untranslated into protein, persisting because insufficiently harmful for negative selection. Sequence persists, un-eliminated, un-reabsorbed, remains fossilised ancestral function rest, evolutionary scar. Entire genome living history deposit, each layer inscribing permanent mark-leaving past operations. Genome non-pure, logical program, non-self-sufficient algorithm lacking origin memory, accumulated transformations archive, evolutionary decisions taken (un-intentionally), structures retained offering local advantage at specific moment.
FOXP2 gene supplies concrete, revealing reuse and integrated contingency example. In humans, FOXP2 associated with language capacity, mutations causing grammar production difficulties, speech muscle coordination, working memory aspects. Yet FOXP2 non-unique human innovation, non-zero-emerging gene to create language. Gene exists in birds, song learning, vocal imitation, generational melody cultural transmission birds. Exists in mammals, auditory processing, motor coordination, learning functions. FOXP2 repurposed, transported from functional context to new contexts acquiring new significance. Gene structuring acoustic communication in non-human ancestors, birds, non-human primates, altered, slightly modified via evolutionary processes, transformed into recursive symbolic language capacity component. Human language non-essentially new, unprecedented property, creative rearrangement of existing materials, present properties, co-opted and transformed structures for new ends.
Philosophical significance deep: human arose reusing materials never originally designed for humanity. No cosmic designer selected materials specifically producing abstract language or reflexive consciousness. Materials functioning in different contexts, offering marginal survival advantages in local situations, transformed by millions of years of small changes accumulation. Human Frankensteinian, assembly, collage, rearrangement of pieces with different history, original different ends.
Fossil record supplies explicit structural contingency cartography. Ninety-nine percent of species existing across life's history extinct. Extinct, completely vanished, descendantless, continuationless. Non-minor evolutionary curiosity, fundamental ontological data on life's nature. Extinction normal regime. Persistence rare exception. Most evolutionary branches, body plans, life strategies, emerging forms, end in death. Some branches produce descendants, bifurcating into multiple directions. Life tree volume dominated by death, most volume, extension, history of extinction.
Two critical moments arise examining biological history leading specifically to human. First: asteroid impact sixty-six million years ago in Gulf of Mexico. Life historians accept cosmic body impact (ten kilometres diameter) eliminated avian dinosaurs catastrophically, creating environmental conditions rendering continued persistence impossible in brief geological times. Without event, cosmic astronomical chance, dinosaurs continued diversifying, following evolutionary trajectories. Avian birds, terrestrial ecologically supreme reptiles, persisted as dominant intelligent complex life form. Second critical moment: deep climate transformations series in East Africa during last twenty million years creating savannas where dense tropical forest existed, fragmenting continuous forest habitats into semi-arid-separated vegetation islands. Transformations radically altered ecological niches, selective pressures operating on organisms. Hominids exploiting transformed niches subjected to new, severe selective pressures. Adapting hominids, bipedal walking efficiently in savanna, developing larger brains via diversified diet, using tools for food, obtained marginal reproductive advantage. Local contingency, specific to climate prevailing then. Had climate changed differently, precipitation maintained forests, savanna un-formed, selective pressures differed, evolutionary trajectory radically altered.
Modern Homo sapiens emerges not by necessity, cosmic telos, mechanism obliging form existence. Emerges by specific, highly improbable climate changes combination, specific food resources, ancestral hominid random variation, non-adapting selective death. Emerges, crucially, in unique non-replicable form. Modern humans possess specific characteristics, brain size, hand structure, language capacity, childhood duration, result of selections series under changing specific conditions. Had conditions changed, climate changed, resources changed, natural selection operated differently, favouring different characteristics. Nothing guarantees modern human remains reproductively successful form.
1.4. Metastability as Normal Life Regime
Persisting form, continuing moment to next, reproducing, leaving descendants, does so not by existing in stable equilibrium as inorganic systems in thermal equilibrium. Persists in metastability regime, maintaining internal organisation, integrating small perturbations, persisting while internal forces maintain dynamic tension equilibrium. Precarious equilibrium, abrupt phase transition if perturbations exceed internal absorption and reconfiguration capacity.
Classic metastability example: supercooled water. Extreme purity water, lacking crystallisation nucleus particles, below zero degrees Celsius, remains liquid. Organised state, liquid water properties, appropriate viscosity, density, behaving as liquid water. Precarious equilibrium. Small perturbation, mechanical vibration, dust particle, moderate sound, suffices disrupting stability. Water transforms instantly into ice. Abrupt, explosive transition, occurring without temperature change, perturbation activated energetically possible phase transition blocked by nucleation mechanism absence.
Ecological example: ecosystem maintains biodiversity and productivity while selective pressures maintain balance, predators and prey in mutual perpetuation proportion, sufficient nutrient access sustaining trophic web. Ecosystem persists in metastable regime, functioning, maintaining organisation, producing new organisms, offering small perturbation resistance. Suffers abrupt collapse if selective pressures alter radically. Invasive predator introduced without natural rival eliminates prey in cascade, ecosystem collapsing to alternative state. Key species-affecting disease emerging, trophic relations structuring species, ecosystem enters extinction cascade. Stable-seeming organisation vanishes.
Human body exemplifies metastability clearly. Body maintains physiological constancies, temperature ~37°C, blood pH 7.35–7.45, circulating glucose 80–100 mg/dL, systolic blood pressure ~120 mmHg, while internal regulatory processes compensate perturbations. Kidneys filter blood, maintaining hydro-electrolytic balance via selective reabsorption. Pancreas monitors glucose, secreting insulin to lower or glucagon to raise. Hypothalamus monitors temperature, triggering heat dissipation or generation. Autonomous nervous system adjusts heart and respiratory rates for metabolic demand. Regulatory processes absorb perturbations, muscle fatigue, sweat water loss, infection fever, working to restore physiological constancies. Homeostasis un-perfect, variations, deviations, fluctuations, yet integration/reconfiguration capacity permits body continuing as viable human body.
Yet homeostasis regulatory capacity possesses clear limits. Excessive perturbation, extreme water loss kidneys cannot compensate, severe fever exceeding 41°C, massive haemorrhage collapsing blood pressure causing cerebral hypoperfusion, regulatory systems fail compensating. Body enters shock. Organs lack oxygenated blood. Irreversible cascading cell death. Metastable regime breaks irreversibly.
Analysis describes non-pathology, non-anormal deviation from "normal" desirable state. Described is normal regime. Normal regime signifies nothing guaranteed forever. Form persists while maintaining dynamic equilibrium between constituting and perturbing forces. Limits exist for integratable perturbation. Exceeding limits means death, disintegration, irrevocable form cessation. Metastability non-fragility, non-design defect needing correction. Metastability normal structure of living form, organism, persisting system. Being alive signifies being in continuous metastability regime, continuously balancing form-destroying forces.
1.5. Living in Permanent Contingency
Persistence presupposition dissolution offers non-merely theoretical reorientation, offers radical change in inhabiting existence. What signifies living recognising no continuation guarantee exists? Existing as form capable of ceasing existence?
First: control illusion loss. Ordinary experience offers illusion of controlling existence, securing continuation via will and reason. Useful illusion, permits confident action, yet illusion. Partial control truth. Forces operating beyond individual will reach, climate changes, epidemics, accelerated technical transformation, social collapse, transform conditions beyond individual prediction or avoidance.
Second: heightened responsibility. Partial control, open future, responsibility non-delegable. Saying "let government decide," "science solve," "market regulate" impossible. No authority possesses guaranteed solution. No institution secures continuation. Responsibility for remaining contingency, un-eliminable uncertainty, carried by each.
Third: changed relation to death. Individual death, each body death, ever evident. Potential form death, humanity death as such, rarely contemplated seriously. Contemplation invites non-despair, but lucidity. If form can cease existing, present life, other living forms, biosphere persistence, acquires urgent value. Non-eternity promise, none exists, but non-certain continuation.
Fourth: hope recalibration. Illusion hope, "everything works out," saviour solving contradictions, must be abandoned. Practical hope remains, acting possibility, present action consequences, creating conditions where form persists temporarily. Hopeless-guarantee hope, acting despite guarantee absence.
Finally: fragility acceptance as normal structure. Human non-violated form restorable to originative stability. Human ever-fragile form, dependent, vulnerable, at risk. Acceptance, genuine, structural, non-abstract, fundamental change in relation to proper form. Ceasing protection search where none exists. Ceasing demanding un-offered life guarantees. Continuing, simply.
1.6. Section 1 Synthesis: The Dissolved Presupposition
Traversing Section 1 four interrogation lines, invisible post-human discourse presupposition, contingent historical human realisation, molecular genome contingency, normal metastability regime, what perception constellation emerges?
First: guarantee dissolution. No mechanism secures persistence. No ontological protection. No cosmic sanction preserves form. Form persists while persisting, functional couplings working, managing internal tensions, un-invalidating environment. Changing conditions, changing, form ceases persisting. Non-imminent death prophecy. Structure recognition.
Second: exceptionalism loss. Human non-necessary cosmic history culmination. Non-final point cosmic history converges toward. Non-privileged form universe structure predisposes. Human local solution to local problems at local moment, extraordinary, complex, remarkable, yet local. Changing environment, failing solution.
Third: contingency radicalisation. History contingent, evident. Contingency structural, constitutive, genome-inscribed, moment-operating. Form non-stable despite contingency, metastable because of contingency. Contingency regime, non-exception.
Fourth: precariousness responsibility. No guarantee, contingent form, open future, present action weighs. Managing form-sustaining couplings material non-escapable, non-delegable responsibility.
2.1. Against Vulgar Evolutionary Teleology: Error Genealogy
Vulgar Darwin reading, public education, natural history documentaries, contemporary cultural discourse common sense, presents evolution as absolute progress, ascending movement from simple to complex/advanced forms, narrative where innovation is consistent improvement, history possesses direction. Visually rendered in ubiquitous image: "evolution ladder," linear silhouette progression starting bacterium, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, primates, standing human at top, larger, erect, developed. Visual narrative progressive, ascending movement, complexity increment, clear direction. Implicit finality. Human form natural culmination, because us, recognising maximum complexity, intellectual capacity, freedom.
Error, confusing actual history (contingent events sequence) with inevitable progress narrative (each step necessary reaching present), historically understandable, partly inevitable. Nineteenth century witnessed accelerated technological transformation in Western Europe and imperial centres. Steam locomotive replaced horse-drawn carriage, faster movement, greater transport capacity. Steel replaced iron, stronger, versatile. Steam power multiplied human productive capacity. Observable technological progress in historical time, 1800-born individual witnessing radical mobility, productive power, communication transformations. Western civilisation evolving, improving, transcending limitations. Intellectual climate naturally projecting technological progress pattern onto natural history. Technology progresses, why not nature? Building sophisticated machines, evolution building sophisticated, adapted, perfection-approaching organisms.
Confusion tempting. Offering coherent narrative making sense, things improving, future better than past. Offering hope. Moral sanction for European civilisational project, progress natural law, evolution marching superior forms, colonisation, industrialisation, technical world transformation aligned fundamental cosmic forces.
Yet Darwin, historical Darwin, non-vulgarised, offered argumentation un-readable as supporting natural law progress. Darwin argued specific mechanism: natural selection. Organisms reproduce unequally, some leaving more descendants. Leaving more descendants: surviving, reproducing well in prevailing specific conditions. Descendants inherit successful reproduction characteristics. Over generations, reproductive advantage characteristics accumulate in population. Result adaptation, organisms exploring ecological niches with increasing efficiency, surviving challenging environments, developing intricate reproduction-serving behaviours.
Mechanism powerful, extraordinarily. Given millions of years, continuous random variation in population organisms, local changing conditions continuous selective pressure, mechanism generates extraordinary complexity, engineer-designed-seeming structures, explanation-demanding behaviours. Darwin mechanism explains apparent design without invoking conscious designer.
Mechanism lacks objective. Marches not toward pre-determined end. Lacks inherent direction. Works not toward "superior" or "perfect" form. Operates on relative present reproduction. Surviving entity reproduces most frequently in prevailing conditions. Changing conditions, infection changing environment, climate changing, new predator emerging, well-adapted characteristics become disadvantage. Selected against.
Distinction between "survival of the fittest" and "survival of the best-adapted" crucial, often obscured. "Fittest" suggests universal quality, advantage-conferring property in any circumstance, environment, time. "Best-adapted" clarifies advantage local, relative to prevailing specific conditions. Camel extraordinarily adapted to desert, water storage in specialised cells, sand-walking body structure, extreme temperature tolerance. Camel brilliantly explores challenging niche.
