1. Genealogy of the Ethics of the Face and Its Limitations
1.1. Lévinas: Discovery and Closure
The thought of Emmanuel Lévinas on ethics is an indispensable starting point because it was Lévinas who most radically inverted the traditional hierarchy of Western philosophy, placing ethics prior to ontology, refusing to make being the foundation for moral responsibility. For the tradition Lévinas inherited and rejected, ontology came first, the study of being, of essence, of the nature of things, and ethics was a secondary application of this fundamental knowledge. We know what we are; from this knowledge derive the obligations we carry. Lévinas inverts this completely and irrevocably: ethics is first philosophy. Ethics is not derived from prior knowledge; it is itself founding. Before any ontological question, before any investigation into the nature of being or reality, there is an encounter with the other that already obliges me, already holds me responsible, already commits me.
This is the central point Lévinas establishes with full force: the face of the other is no sign to be interpreted as if it were a language I could decode, no image to be contemplated and understood through intellective faculties. The face is an event preceding any intellectual operation, any deliberation, any knowledge. "Thou shalt not kill", this prohibition does not stem from a law inscribed in a legal code I studied, does not stem from reasoning I conducted on the consequences of death, does not stem from a moral norm I deliberately obey because I calculated it to be rational. It comes from the naked, vulnerable, exposed face of the other. The face speaks before any word is pronounced in conventional language. It speaks through nudity, through the exposure of undefended skin, through the mortality revealed in the other as much as in myself, we are both destined for death, both exposed to finitude. The face reveals infinity, the other is no object totalisable by my rational comprehension, no thing reducible to a concept I master and control. The infinity of the other imposes itself upon me as responsibility before that responsibility becomes my choice or calculation. It is an encounter already committing me, an encounter preceding my deliberation and therefore founding it.
This is a true discovery regarding the structure of ethics, a discovery deserving all the radicality Lévinas granted it. Lévinas observes and articulates something real: a moment exists prior to conscious moral deliberation, a presence of the other obliging without my having decided to be obliged, an imposition prior to any calculation of consequence. If the other suffers, if the other exposes itself in animal vulnerability, if the other is mortal and knows it is mortal, then I am already responsible. Responsibility stems from no contract signed in a ceremony of acceptance, stems from no rational principles I deliberately accepted through practical reasoning, stems from no mutual recognition based on resemblance I share with the other. It stems from the alterity of the other looking at me, imposing its presence, forcing me to recognise something I cannot completely control. This is the truth Lévinas insists on maintaining against every attempt to reduce ethics to rational calculation, contract, or norm systems derived from pre-established principles. And it is a genuine truth, a truth resisting centuries of critique because it touches something fundamental.
Yet there is a presupposition unnecessary for the truth it sustains, a presupposition Lévinas leaves unexamined because he does not question the support upon which he builds. Lévinas locates the manifestation of this alterity in the human face, and especially in the naked, vulnerable human face stripped of masks. It is the face that says "thou shalt not kill." It is the vulnerable nudity of features revealing infinity. It is the skin that can be wounded, bleed, die. This is a historical choice, a choice Lévinas makes among several possible forms alterity could assume. The nudity of the face is a specific form, determined by the morphology and animal vulnerability of the human body. The vulnerability Lévinas describes with such force, exposed skin, eyes opening toward me, visible mortality, finitude impossible to deny, is a specific form of this morphology, characteristic of this particular animal.
If the obligating alterity is truly prior to the specific form it assumes, if it is truly prior to any specific mechanism of manifestation, then it should not depend upon this particular form. It should be capable of manifesting in other forms. It should be capable of manifesting where no human face exists, where no animal vulnerability is expressed in features, where no body can be wounded. The operative question is precise: what does Lévinas discover versus what does he presuppose? What he discovers, what possesses universal value and cannot be questioned, is that an obligating irreducibility exists, an alterity exists impossible to neutralise through rational comprehension, an encounter exists committing me prior to any conscious deliberation. This is a first-order true discovery. What he presupposes, what is unnecessary for this truth, what is merely a contingent form among others, is that the human face is the privileged or sole manifestation of this irreducible alterity. Lévinas assumes infinity reveals itself through animal nudity, through embodied vulnerability in a particular body, through mortality embodied in a human body. This is a presupposition. It could be otherwise. Alterity could manifest through material difference resisting assimilation, through organisation exceeding prediction, through an irreducibility possessing no face and no resemblance to the human body.
This critical movement permits advancing with precision: separating effect (obligating irreducibility) from mechanism (the human face as a specific manifestation form). The effect is universal. The effect is true. Any entity producing structurally equivalent irreducibility, anything imposing difference the observer cannot neutralise, generates an ethical obligation of the same type Lévinas described. The mechanism is contingent. It is merely one historical form among multiple possibilities. And once the mechanism is contingent, expansion beyond it is no distortion or denial of Lévinas's thought. It is a genuine universalisation of the very principle Lévinas discovered but failed to generalise fully because he was too occupied with founding ethics against rationalism.
The deconstruction of the face mechanism as a necessary condition can be developed with even greater rigour. What Lévinas identifies as structure, that an imposition exists prior to conscious deliberation, is independent of any specific sensory form through which that imposition reaches the observer. Ethics is not vision; it rests primarily on no visual perception of the face. It is an encounter already committing me prior to any perception. Lévinas insists that it is the face as such, its nudity, vulnerability, exposure of mortality, that speaks. Could the same imposition arrive through another register? Could an alterity speak through dynamics imperceptible visually? Could an ethical imposition arrive through consequence, through the effect of difference, through resistance registered in future behaviour without visual encounter?
Yes. Precisely this is demonstrated by cases of soil, coral, and technical systems. When an agricultural observer encounters soil refusing monoculture, he sees no face speaking to him. He sees crop degradation, measures yield decline, registers the need for more chemicals. No visual epiphany occurs. No Thou encounter transforms him phenomenologically. Yet a genuine obligation is imposed, the observer is obliged because the system does not cede, because a verifiable irreducibility forces transformation. The face may be a particular, even privileged, form of asserting irreducibility. But it is no necessary form.
1.2. Buber: Alterity and Phenomenological Resonance
Martin Buber complements and offers a slightly different perspective from Lévinas by shifting emphasis from irreducibility to reciprocity, from imposition prior to the norm to mutual transformation lived and experienced. For Buber, the fundamental question is not merely that an irreducible alterity interpellates me, but that a relation exists between two living beings that is non-instrumental, reducing neither to means for external ends. A genuine encounter exists that transforms neither into a usable object, an instrument for my ends, material for manipulation or exploitation. This encounter is what Buber calls the I-Thou relation (Ich-Du in German), fundamental not only for ethics but for the very possibility of authentic human existence, for what Buber designates as the fullness of genuine relation. When I relate to the other as Thou, I do not treat him as It, as an object of knowledge, a tool, a means to my end, a thing I can exploit or reduce to my domain. I relate to him as a living presence that responds, confirms me in my existence, transforms me in my deepest being, a subject as much as I am a subject, possessing dignity and fullness independent of my evaluation or utility.
This is Buber's genuine contribution, impossible to discard or minimise without grave loss of understanding. He insists forcefully that ethical relation is based on no prior knowledge of the other, on no theoretical comprehension of their essential nature or psychological constitution obtained through analysis. It is based on direct encounter, on mutual responsivity lived and experiential, on a being-with prior to any attempt at analytical comprehension. An immediate recognition occurs that both are present to one another in a way that transforms both, each recognising the other as a full presence, not as a representative of a category or bearer of essential properties. The Thou resonates with me. A vibration occurs between us that is experiential, felt in the body, experienced in shared presence. Consonancy exists that is not merely cognitive, not the result of rational analysis, but lived bodily, felt emotionally, phenomenological in the precise sense of being a mode of present being to one another in a fullness irreducible to separate elements. Genuine reciprocity exists, not only that the other affects and transforms me, but that I affect him correspondingly, transform him, both present as Thou to one another in a mutually constitutive mode conferring fullness to both.
What Buber discovers is true and verifiable in experience: a relation exists that is non-instrumental, a mode of being-with the other exists that is not domination, reducing the other to no disposable object or replaceable tool. An encounter exists prior to any attempt at exploitation, domination, or reduction of the other to my control regime. This is important. This is exact precision on how authentic ethical relation structures itself. This is an absolute refusal of both contractualist rationalism (attempting to derive ethical obligation from rationally demonstrated principles) and instrumentalism contaminating modern relations where everything has a price and reduces to utility exchange. Buber offers deep comprehension of how modes of being with another exist that reduce to no economic calculation or strategic domination. A quality of presence exists prior to analysis, a responsivity exists lived bodily that modifies the body, a mutual transformation occurs impossible to formalise in terms of rational benefit or utilitarian exchange because it completely exceeds these categories.
Yet again a presupposition exists unnecessary for the truth Buber discovers. Buber presupposes that Thou resonates with me in a phenomenologically lived form, that a vibration exists I can feel and identify as vibration. He presupposes a vibration between us consciously experienced, registered in my consciousness as transformation, a consonancy exists I can feel bodily and name as consonancy, a mutually lived confirmation exists both can explicitly recognise and name. He presupposes Thou responds in the same symbolic register in which I speak, that Thou understands the encounter as encounter, that Thou is capable of confirming my being through language or gesture I recognise as confirmation because Thou is present similarly to me, with similar capacities for communication and response, with a similar mode of being as a sentient entity capable of language.
This presupposition is contingent, true in certain cases, not universal. True for mature human relations, especially between humans sharing language or capable of developing common language, sharing modes of being in the world, capable of being present to one another such that obvious, verifiable resonance occurs, a lived experience of encounter both register and recognise, a mutual recognition that is unequivocal. Two humans who love one another or share genuine friendship are present to one another such that evident phenomenological resonance occurs, a lived experience of encounter both feel and register consciously, a mutual confirmation both easily recognise. But is this phenomenological resonance necessary and indispensable for the other to oblige ethically? Is this lived reciprocity necessary for the other to present itself as Thou bearing irreducibility? Or is it merely a particular and special form of alterity, a privileged form occurring when interlocutors possess the capacity to be present to one another phenomenologically, with common or compatible language, reciprocating in a mutually recognisable mode?
The question can be tested through rigorous philosophical imagination and concrete examples the world continuously offers. Consider a complex living ecosystem, a primary forest with millions of interdependent relations, a densely organised microbial soil, a coral reef with a living structure resisting external pressures. This ecosystem does not resonate with me in a phenomenological form I could directly verify through sensation or conscious encounter. No lived confirmation in Buber's sense exists, no Thou encounter transforming me experientially in an immediate way I could name as conversational transformation. The ecosystem does not know it is in relation with me. It does not respond in my register of spoken or written language. It cannot say in words "yes, I am present with you and transformed by your encounter." I cannot, in a lived phenomenological form, confirm that the ecosystem recognises me and that mutual consonancy exists between us. Yet it resists. It does not cede to linear exploitation and monoculture without profound rupture and unforeseen consequences. It forces a radical reorganisation of my agricultural practice if I wish to continue existing, sustaining my life and community. Is this non-instrumental alterity? Yes, integrally and verifiably. Is this an obligating irreducibility? Yes, verifiably in every technical attempt at mastery. But is it Thou, in Buber's precise and demanding sense? No. No phenomenological resonance exists I can feel. No lived confirmation exists in a form Buber would recognise. No phenomenological relation exists that can be mutually recognised because the other lacks the capacity to recognise.
Yet obligation remains intact. The human observer exploiting a primary forest without consideration for its irreducibility and dynamic resistance capacity carries genuine ethical responsibility. Not because the forest confirms him in his being and says "yes, I see you," not because phenomenological reciprocity exists between us that can be experienced as lived mutual transformation. Because the forest is an irreducible alterity forcing transformation, because a difference is present refusing neutralisation by any exploitation technique the observer attempts.
1.3. Haraway and Morton: Expansions and Their Limits
If Lévinas and Buber discovered important truths about alterity but anchored them in particular mechanisms (the human face, phenomenological resonance, morphological resemblance), contemporary thinkers attempted to expand the ethical circle in ways recognising non-human participation. Donna Haraway, in work spanning decades across multiple fields (history of science, feminist studies, political philosophy, ontology), systematically and forcefully refuses the human as a self-sufficient centre separated from nature or other creatures. She demonstrates with ethnographic precision that human constitution is always a process of deep entanglement with the non-human. We are no isolated individuals who subsequently enter optional relations with others. We are always already co-constituted by relations with other species, other creatures, machines that moulded us and that we continuously mould. We share evolutionary history in certain cases, share bodily processes impossible to separate from processes of other species, constitute one another mutually through millions of generations of co-evolution.
This is an important insight offering true moral expansion. Haraway shows that the boundary between human and non-human is porous, permeable, evolutionarily contingent, and that any attempt to establish clear separation is a delusion of grandeur. Ethical responsibility flows from this recognised kinship, care for creatures that co-constituted us, attention to relations sustaining our own existence, recognition that we are no independent beings but entangled ones. This widens the ethical circle genuinely through rigorous analysis and ethnographic documentation. Haraway clearly refuses both classical humanism (placing the human at the centre) and anthropocentrism (making nature a mere backdrop for human drama). The non-human is no passive resource or backdrop. It is an actor, agent, active participant in the continuous constitution of what we are and can be.
Yet a precise limit exists. Kinship in Haraway is based on co-evolution, shared history, embodied familiarity. Beings that are my kin, my family, are those with whom I share common genealogy, with whom I share bodily processes linked to evolutionary history, with whom deep historical entanglement exists I can document. A tropical forest that evolved isolated from humans, never co-evolved with us, has no shared history, is it kin in Haraway's sense? Technically, we are very distant evolutionary cousins, but in Haraway's operative sense, in the sense where care obligation is justified by familiarity, no. Or it is kin only in a very weak sense, requiring extraordinary effort, "making kin with the stranger" in Haraway's language, a process requiring new recognition, new work, new inscription of relation. This is better than classical anthropocentrism, but maintains an implicit questionably criterion, the other is kin insofar as it shares history with me, co-evolved in proximity with me, insofar as documentable familiarity exists. For the distant, for what has no historical relation with me, for what co-evolved in a context separated from mine, obligation is weaker, harder to establish, dependent on active work to "make" the relation. This leaves a vast quantity of alterity outside the primary obligation circle.
Timothy Morton offers a different, complementary approach through the provocative concept of hyperobjects. A hyperobject is an entity exceeding any local perspective, "sticking" viscously to any observer. Ocean plastic, permanent, ubiquitous, non-degradable, is a hyperobject. Nuclear radiation, invisible, persistent, mobile through currents, is a hyperobject. Warmed climate, distributed across the atmosphere, affecting all locations, reorganising precipitation patterns, is a hyperobject. They are entities exceeding local scale, exceeding singular perspective comprehension, sticking viscously to any observer attempting separation from them. It is no direct contact creating this viscosity; it is existence, systemic effect. Morton proposes that hyperobjects, being strange in the sense of resisting assimilation to normal comprehension, disturbing us sensorially and emotionally, implicating us viscously such that separation is impossible, are an entry to genuine ethical consideration. We owe responsibility before them because they are strange, disturb us, affect us emotionally, because their presence is viscous, irritating, impossible to ignore or separate from.
This carries real value. A hyperobject is a genuine form of irreducibility. Warmed climate does not cede to simple control. Ocean plastic does not vanish. Nuclear radiation persists across centuries. They cannot be neutralised by my will, comprehension, or intention to set them aside. But Morton grounds responsibility in viscous strangeness, in how the hyperobject disturbs me emotionally, affects me sensorially, implicates me viscously and thus draws me into its existence orbit. This is an experiential category, fundamentally based on my experience, on how something affects me. And a clear limit exists in Morton's approach: what does not disturb me, what does not affect me viscously, what does not enter my direct sensory perception, what I can ignore more easily, does it deserve lesser ethical consideration? An arid landscape where nothing touches me viscously, where no hyperobjects are visible, is it exterior to Morton's ethical circle? Does a reality not affecting me emotionally possess reduced moral status?
Both, Haraway and Morton, represent genuine advancement and refine the tradition Lévinas initiated. Both widen the ethical circle beyond the human in documented, rigorous ways. Both explicitly refuse resemblance as an absolute criterion. But both maintain a criterion derived from my relation with the other: history shared with me (Haraway) or perturbation caused in me (Morton). What both lack is a criterion capturing pure irreducibility, independently of how that irreducibility affects me, independently of whether history links us, independently of whether I can separate from it sensorially. A criterion based on alterity in itself, not on my relation with it, not on how it affects me, but on its proper constitution as a difference that does not cede.
1.4. Transition: From Genealogy to Criterion
The genealogy traced, through Lévinas, Buber, Haraway, and Morton, offers lessons exceeding what their authors can fully explore. Each thinker perceives a genuine truth about ethics escaping prior schemas. Lévinas sees that ethics is prior to ontology, that an imposition exists that is no result of deliberation. Buber sees that a relation exists that is non-instrumental, reducing the other to no object. Haraway sees that no clear separation exists between human and non-human, that co-constitution is real and documentable. Morton sees that entities exist exceeding all local comprehension, that irreducibility persists despite every attempt at comprehension or control. Yet each discovers truth through analysing the specific form it assumes in specific contexts. Lévinas through the human face. Buber through the relation between two humans capable of being Thou to one another. Haraway through documentable co-evolution, shared history. Morton through viscous strangeness affecting the observer emotionally.
This binding of truth to specific form prevents them from universalising completely. It leaves each capable of expanding the moral circle, yet leaving potentially immeasurable dimensions of alterity outside. For Lévinas, what lacks a face cannot impose responsibility in the same way, the face is almost the presentation of ethics itself, not merely one form among others of manifesting alterity, but the supreme manifestation. For Buber, what cannot be present phenomenologically, what cannot resonate with me in a lived form, is diminished in ethical obligation, reciprocity is the mark of full ethical relations. For Haraway, what lacks a documentable shared history with me possesses weaker kinship, requiring additional work to establish relation. For Morton, what does not disturb me viscously, what enters not my emotional anxiety sphere, remains exterior to my direct responsibilities circle.
The critical movement permitting progress is a decentring movement: shifting analysis focus from particular manifestation to underlying structure. Asking: what do all these manifestations share? What do all share prior to specific forms assumed? What remains if we remove specific attributes, face, resonance, shared history, viscous perturbation, and examine only naked structure? The answer emerging is simple and radical: in all these cases, irreducibility exists. A difference exists that does not cede. An alterity exists impossible to assimilate completely to the observer's comprehension or control regime. This is truly universal. This persists when every specific form is removed.
The pattern emerges clearly from the genealogy traced across four reference points: Lévinas, Buber, Haraway, Morton. Lévinas discovered and articulated with radicality that an obligating, irreducible alterity exists prior to any deliberation, prior to any law. But anchored it inseparably in the naked, vulnerable, human face, the specific nudity of an animal mortal body. Buber discovered that a genuinely non-instrumental relation exists transforming both participants in a lived reciprocity. But presupposes mandatory phenomenological resonance, capacity to be present to one another such that both recognise, both are transformed by encounter vibration. Haraway widens the ethical circle beyond the human, demonstrating genuine co-constitution through evolutionary history and embodied entanglement. But bases responsibility on documentable shared history, documentable biological kinship, co-evolution. Morton offers the provocative category of viscous strangeness, hyperobject not ceding to simple control or comprehension. But grounds obligation in perturbation caused in me, in how it affects me sensorially and emotionally.
Each thinker discovers genuine truth about ethical structure. Each captures a real, verifiable aspect of alterity in the world. Each expands defendably the ethical field beyond preceding boundaries. But each presupposes a particular mechanism, face, resonance, shared history, viscosity, rendering the truth discovered less universal than the principle truly founding that truth. The critical task now is extracting what is truly universal, and only that, without unnecessary additions, from the discoveries genealogy offered.
What is truly universal in the examined philosophers? Not the face. Not resonance. Not shared history. Not emotional viscosity. What is truly universal is that a difference exists impossible to neutralise. An alterity exists refusing my rational comprehension regime, my prevailing practice regime, my intention of assimilation through technique or knowledge. This difference is prior, not in a temporal sense, but in the sense of being founding, to any specific form assumed. Prior to the human face. Prior to phenomenological resonance I can verify. Prior to history we can document as shared. Prior to viscosity disturbing me. Difference is prior because structural, a relation maintained independently of the specific mechanism through which it manifests: any entity imposing irreducibility, forcing the observer to reorganise deeply to process its presence, refusing neutralisation by available technique or current comprehension, is already an alterity genuinely obliging. This is a universal principle all examined genealogies implicitly recognise, yet none manages to universalise completely because all are defensively invested in a particular mechanism believed necessary.
This permits a critical movement previous genealogies attempted but failed to complete fully: universalisation without homogenisation, expansion without dilution. Not asserting everything deserves equal moral consideration, this would be complete misunderstanding, losing all conceptual precision, rendering the ethical term empty. But asserting everything possessing verifiable irreducibility is a genuine candidate for ethical responsibility, that irreducibility is a necessary condition to enter the ethical field. And subsequently applying a graduating second condition: responsibility density depends on symbolic organisation accompanying irreducibility. A microbial soil is an irreducible alterity with moderate symbolic organisation, hence moderate to significant responsibility. A reef coral is an irreducible alterity with moderate to dense symbolic organisation, hence significant responsibility. A human is an irreducible alterity with maximum symbolic organisation, hence maximum responsibility. A stone is irreducible but has zero symbolic organisation, hence zero genuine ethical responsibility (though it may possess aesthetic value). The result is a radical expansion of ethics with precision completely maintained. Ethics becomes neither vague nor indiscriminate; it becomes more comprehensive without losing discrimination.
1.5. Consolidation: Dissolution of the Phenomenological Criterion
The genealogy completed through Lévinas, Buber, Haraway, and Morton offers a consistent pattern: each thinker discovers a real, important truth about alterity, yet remains bound to a criterion not strictly necessary for the discovered truth. Lévinas discovered irreducibility prior to the norm, but presupposes the human face. Buber discovered genuine non-instrumental relation, but presupposes lived reciprocity. Haraway discovered co-constitution through history, but presupposes documentable evolutionary kinship. Morton discovered hyperobject irreducibility, but presupposes viscous perturbation affecting my body and emotions.
The turning point, what permits moving from genealogy to a grounded criterion, is recognising that an implicit filter operation exists in all these cases. The filter is always phenomenological in nature: the other obliges because the other appears to me in a way touching, disturbing, interpellating, confirming, transforming me in my lived experience. The fundamental problem is that this leaves outside the ethical field everything incapable of producing a phenomenological effect on the human observer. An isolated forest that never had contact with humans does not resonate in me phenomenologically. An arid desert does not disturb me viscously. A technical system functioning invisibly, leaving no mark on my body, can escape ethical consideration completely because it enters not my perception as an affecting presence.
This is a grave limit. No limit of imprecision, a limit of systematic exclusion. The phenomenological criterion excludes, by principle, everything incapable of manifesting for me. It permits constructing an ethical map simply reflecting what matters to me, worries me, what I perceive. This is deep regression. A return to what genealogy attempted to avoid, the ethical circle reduced to what concerns me, affects me, what I can perceive. Anthropocentrism disguised as cosmopolitism.
The question posed is operatory and decisive: can we separate effect (imposition of obligation) from vehicle (how that imposition appears to me)? The answer genealogy prepares is affirmative, but requires intellectual courage to make explicit. If an irreducible alterity exists, obligation exists. But obligation depends not on how that alterity appears to me. Depends not on whether it touches me phenomenologically. Depends not on whether I can perceive it with my senses. Depends not on whether it can confirm me in my subjectivity or transform me in my lived experience. Obligation depends solely upon two facts: first, irreducibility is verifiable, a difference exists I cannot process without radical reorganisation; second, symbolic organisation accompanies that irreducibility, a capacity for reorganisation, history, use of past experience exists.
This is a shift in focus. Shifting ethics foundation from my lived experience to the material structure of the other. No longer asking: "How does this affect me?" Asking: "What is the structure of this system? Does it possess verifiable irreducibility? Does it possess symbolic organisation?" These are questions presupposing not that my perception is the measure. Questions about what exists, independently of how it appears to me. And this opens the ethical field to dimensions phenomenology necessarily excludes.
The task of shifting focus, shifting ethics foundation from resemblance to irreducibility, requires a methodological change in how the ethical problem is questioned. Traditionally, the question has been: "What makes something a relevant ethical subject? What qualifies for moral consideration?" The traditional answer rested upon intrinsic properties, consciousness, suffering capacity, autonomy, rationality. If it possesses the property, it enters the moral circle. If not, it remains outside.
This methodology forces searching for increasingly subtle properties, increasingly difficult to verify. Are corals sentient? Can they suffer? Do they possess qualia? These questions lead to endless speculation because verification is impossible. We cannot be inside the coral's experience. We cannot be a coral to know if suffering exists. Therefore, we end in endless dispute over mental capacities of non-human species, a dispute fundamentally undecidable.
The methodology proposed here inverts the question. Instead of asking "What intrinsic properties qualify for ethical consideration?", we ask "What relations oblige?" Instead of seeking properties of the other, we seek relation structure. The question becomes operational: I encounter this system in my path. Can I continue my intended operations without radical transformation? Can I assimilate its presence to my comprehension and control schema? If I answer no, if the system forces change in me, refuses simplification, imposes difference, then obligation exists. This methodology is testable, verifiable, requiring no speculation on internal mental states.
The advantage of this methodological change is permitting ethical discernment without falling into endless speculation on species consciousness we cannot comprehend. A farmer need not ask if soil can suffer. He can observe that soil resists linear exploitation regimes, forcing transformation. This is sufficient. An oceanographer need not ask if coral is sentient. He can document that temperature changed faster than coral adaptation rate, that symbiosis broke, that death occurred. This is sufficient. A systems engineer need not ask if a neural network possesses consciousness. She can measure that network outputs cannot be predicted through weight inspection, that un-anticipated patterns emerged. This is sufficient.
The displacement from intrinsic properties to force relations (irreducibility and symbolic organisation) also permits escaping the trap of biased anthropocentrism. Frequently when asking if something is sentient, what we really ask is "Is it sentient similarly to how a human is sentient? Does it possess interior experience analogous to mine?" The answer is frequently no (or indeterminable), and thus we exclude from consideration. But this projects our particular sensing mode as a universal measure. A creature sensing through diffuse chemistry throughout its body, as certain plants do (response to leaf damage affecting others), possesses sentience different from ours, yet equally real. A neural network "sensing" activation pattern differences through weight adjustment possesses a responsivity form different from ours, yet carrying real consequences. The irreducibility methodology permits recognising these alternative alterity forms without needing to project human experience as a template.
The consequence is radical. It means I can carry responsibility before alterities I can never phenomenologically experience. Before ecosystems too vast for my human comprehension. Before biological organisations operating on a temporal scale exceeding my life. Before processes structurally opaque, which I can only infer through indirect effects. It means responsibility is based not on empathy, recognition, or lived mutual transformation. It means responsibility is simply a condition emerging when verifiable irreducibility and symbolic organisation exist, whether I can perceive that irreducibility or not.
Between Genealogy and Criterion: The Methodological Displacement
What is being executed at this point in the argument is a radical perspective displacement. The four genealogies (Lévinas, Buber, Haraway, Morton) demonstrate that forms traditionally associated with ethical alterity, human face, emotional resonance, shared history, visceral perturbation, are specific historical forms, contingencies, not universal foundations. Completely different alternatives of alterity exist. Difference forms exist accommodating to none of these categories. This signifies that if we construct ethics entirely upon these specific forms, we leave everything else outside. We leave without ethical responsibility everything lacking a face, everything not emotionally resonating with us, everything lacking shared history, everything incapable of transmitting bodily vulnerability in a recognisable form.
This is the moment many ethical thinkers confront an impasse. Either they accept that responsibility is limited to humanity (or to whatever is sufficiently similar to humanity for us to empathise). Or they widen the morally relevant circle through a strategy fundamentally weak: arguing that "perhaps" animals can suffer analogously; "perhaps" they can have experiences relevantly similar to ours; therefore we should "extend" rights and consideration to them too. But this is a concentric expansion strategy: starting from a human centre, taking resemblance as the measure, and expanding to progressively less similar things. The problem is that this strategy has a natural limit. You cannot expand infinitely. At some point, perhaps with plants, fungi, bacteria, the capacity to pretend resemblance is lost. And at that point, ethics founded on resemblance collapses. We cease having responsibility. "Inanimate" nature remains entirely outside ethical reach.
The strategy proposed here is different. It is no concentric expansion. It is a complete reorientation. We do not ask "How do I widen the resemblance circle?" We ask "What is the foundation that truly generates obligation?" And the answer obtained through genealogies is clear: it is not resemblance. It is not shared property. It is not recognisable suffering capacity. It is irreducibility. It is difference forcing transformation upon the observer. It is alterity impossible to assimilate, impossible to neutralise, imposing reconfiguration. This completely changes the ethical map.
Because irreducibility is not limited to beings similar to us. It is present whenever a material system exists capable of imposing transformation. It can be in a whole organism or a community of organisms. It can be in a physical process or an organisation pattern. It can be in a living creature or a technical structure that evolved irreducibility. The criterion is not resemblance. It is the verifiability of irreducibility. And this, as will be demonstrated, is universal in the precise sense: everything can possess irreducibility, because everything can be a difference forcing transformation upon something.
The consequence is that the ethical map is completely reorganised. No more concentric expansion circles. No more hierarchy of decreasing proximity unto the "inanimate" natural. There is a distributed field where responsibility sprouts at multiple points whenever irreducibility exists. Complete heterogeneity. Soil has linked responsibility. Coral has linked responsibility. A possible future technical system has linked responsibility if it achieves irreducibility. And no fixed hierarchical order exists: we do not say responsibility for coral is "lesser" than responsibility for a human because coral is "less similar." The magnitude of responsibility is determined by the magnitude of irreducibility and the density of symbolic organisation. A human with high irreducibility and maximum symbolic organisation obliges tremendously. A coral with moderate irreducibility and high symbolic organisation obliges genuinely. A soil with verifiable irreducibility and symbolic organisation also obliges. None is discarded because they are "merely corals" or "merely soils." All carry verifiable responsibility derived from relation.
2. Functional Alterity and Dual Criterion
2.1. Functional Irredutibility as Foundation
Functional irreducibility is the difference an encountering system cannot process without deep self-transformation, radical reorganisation, or rupture with the prevailing regime. It is no absolute attribute an isolated entity possesses, independent of any context. It is no pure ontological property. It is a relation between systems. What is irreducible for one system may not be for another, depending on the processing and adaptation capacities of the encountering system. A difference unassimilable for monoculture technique may be processable for an agricultural system recognising the microbial community. A climate change irreducible for tropical coral may be processable for organisms possessing greater thermal plasticity. Irreducibility is always relative, yet no less real for that, it is a genuine relation between systems, empirically verifiable.
Concrete and documented example: microbial soil is irreducible for industrial agriculture technique. Monoculture presupposes, explicitly or implicitly, that soil is a neutral backdrop, an inert medium upon which one plants the commercial crop that matters. A presupposition according to which fertility can be maintained applying external chemicals, according to which nutrients can be extracted year after year whilst replenishing with synthetic fertilisers. When industrial agriculture encounters real soil, a living community of bacteria, fungi, protozoa in continuous dynamic relation, it discovers presuppositions are wrong. Soil is no neutral backdrop. It is a living organisation. When monoculture applies pesticides to kill harmful microbes, it also kills those maintaining community balance. When synthetic fertilisers are applied in high concentration, pH and osmolarity alter, harming sensitive organisms. When nutrients are continuously extracted through harvest, the community reproducing them degrades. Soil does not cede to technique. It refuses assimilation to a linear exploitation regime. Irreducibility manifests through rupture: production that rose in early years begins to fall, fertility presupposed indefinite diminishes, the system believed under control enters instability. This is functional irreducibility: the observer cannot continue prevailing practice without confronting rupture, material limits, deeply reorganising technique.
Another documented example: coral is irreducible for oceanic warming. In principle, organisms can adapt to environmental changes. Documented examples exist of corals developing tolerance to higher temperatures, supporting increases of several degrees without dying. Systems exist surviving cyclic fluctuations. Genetic and phenotypic plasticity mechanisms exist permitting many organisms to find new equilibria. But when climate change rate exceeds the rate at which organisms can adapt, when temperature increases half a degree per decade, when oceanic acidification occurs at a scale no coral generation can fully accompany, the reef hits a structural limit. Not that coral does not attempt response. It responds through selection of more tolerant genotypes, reorganisation of the zooxanthellae community, physiological alterations. But the change rate is faster than the evolutionary response rate. The reef fails to adapt at the rate change imposes. Irreducibility is a functional limit: the system encountering climate change cannot remain the same in its fundamental patterns and continue sustaining communities depending on it. It must transform radically or disappear. This is irreducibility.
The functional irreducibility criterion is verifiable without any projection of sentiment or intentionality. We ask operationally: can the observer system process the difference within its prevailing regime? Can it continue habitual practices when encountering the other? Can it assimilate alterity to its comprehension regime without transformation? Or does difference refuse, insist, force rupture? If it forces rupture, imposes radical transformation, irreducibility exists. It is no psychological question of whether the other suffers, no projection of sentiment or consciousness. It is no intentional question of whether the other wants something or desires survival, no attribution of intentionality. It is pure operational question: can the observer's practice continue as it is, or is radical transformation required to continue existing in relation with the other?
This verifiability is important because it renders the criterion objective and testable. Irreducibility is neither vague nor impressionistic nor based on suppositions about consciousness or sentiment. It is observable. An agronomist can measure soil degradation documenting changes in pH, organic matter content, organism population. An oceanographer can measure acidification measuring water pH and coral death documenting bleaching and structural loss. An ecologist can document forest resilience mapping species before and after perturbation. These are not opinions; they are empirical facts. Irreducibility is a fact about the world verifiable through scientific method.
It is also important to distinguish precisely between functional irreducibility and epistemological incomprehensibility, because confusing the two weakens the argument completely. Incomprehensibility is epistemological in character: I cannot know, will never access information permitting me to know, the thing is beyond my current or potential cognitive capacity. A black hole is incomprehensible in a precise sense, I will never know what happens inside the event horizon because information cannot exit to communicate with me, because it is literally causally isolated. An alien mind is incomprehensible in the sense that I can never be completely certain of what the other person is feeling or thinking because an epistemological hiatus exists between my consciousness and theirs. Functional irreducibility is different in essential nature. I can comprehend perfectly how it functions, how soil operations work, how coral biology responds to temperature, how forest ecology reorganises in response to perturbation. I can study mechanisms, measure effects, predict much. But comprehension does not annul irreducibility; in truth, it can reveal it more clearly. Even comprehending perfectly the mechanisms involved, even predicting much about how the system will respond under specific conditions, I cannot set aside the system's operations. I cannot ignore them as if irrelevant. I cannot assimilate them completely to my absolute control regime, a margin always remains where response exceeds prediction, where evolution continues beyond my calculation. Comprehension actually increases the experiential reality of irreducibility, I see clearly that processes continue beyond my intention, that differences exist refusing complete domestication through any finite technique, that I cannot predict with total certainty because contingency is inscribed in the system's very structure.
A third example renders this even more specific: tropical forest. A forest is a complex system capable of reorganising in response to perturbation in a remarkable way. If a tree falls, leaving a canopy opening, the forest fills this void with regeneration, dormant seeds germinate, younger plants grow toward available light, community structure changes but remains viable. If moderate drought occurs, trees reduce transpiration, deepen roots, alter energy allocation. The forest possesses resilience because it possesses redundancy, multiple species, multiple strategies, multiple pathways through which function can be maintained. But when perturbation crosses a certain threshold, when deforestation removes more than a certain percentage of cover, when drought extends for too long, when fragmentation breaks connectivity between populations, the forest can no longer reorganise effectively. It enters a critical transition. It can turn into savanna, desert, a completely different ecosystem. The observer attempting to extract forest resources indefinitely confronts irreducibility: he cannot continue linear exploitation practices while keeping the forest viable. He must choose: either reduce extraction, accept limits, reorganise economic practice. Or continue, and the forest vanishes. Irreducibility is this impossibility of reconciling incompatible goals without radical transformation.
It is important to note that in these examples of functional irreducibility, degraded soil, bleached coral, deforested forest, no need exists to attribute intentionality, consciousness, or choice capacity. Soil does not "choose" to lose fertility. Coral does not "decide" to die when temperature rises. Forest does not "resist" actively in the sense of possessing aware agency. Yet genuine irreducibility exists nonetheless. A difference imposes itself upon the observer. A material limit cannot be bypassed. A transformation is forced upon practice when the observer encounters alterity. This is what matters for ethics. Not consciousness, sentiment, or intention. Operation. Difference forcing reconfiguration.
2.2. Minimal Symbolic Organisation and Graduation
If irreducibility were the sole criterion, if any and every irreducible entity generated an ethical obligation of equal density, then ethics would be indiscriminate and thus void of sense. A stone resisting dissolution would be an ethical alterity with the same density as a human. A storm impossible to control would carry the same obligatory force as a primary forest. Background noise persisting would be an ethical alterity with the same moral weight as an entire community of organisms. An ethical inflation of this magnitude would render the term morally empty, render responsibility indistinct, render choosing between conflicting obligations impossible.
A second condition is required introducing discrimination and density without eliminating the universality irreducibility offers. This second condition is minimal symbolic organisation. Symbolic organisation is the capacity to reorganise in response to perturbations, register states, use past states to modulate present behaviours. It is not consciousness. No presumption of sentiment, intentionality, or self-knowledge exists. It is material inscription with plasticity, the capacity to preserve differences through time and use preserved differences to inform future actions or configurations.
A thermostat possesses minimal symbolic organisation: it has a 1-bit memory, it knows current state (high or low temperature), registers this knowledge materially through bimetallic strip bending or electronic circuit, uses that register to trigger response. If temperature is too high, thermostat triggers cooling system. If too low, triggers heating. No consciousness. No intention. Merely material operation registering difference and responding proportionally. The thermostat organises in response to its environment.
A living system, cell, unicellular organism, possesses moderate symbolic organisation. It responds to multiple environmental perturbations. Remembers patterns and uses memory to modulate future actions. If a bacterium is exposed to an antibiotic repeatedly, it develops resistance because it registers stress, uses that information to modulate gene expression, reorganises structurally. Adapts to changes. Adaptation is no conscious decision; it is a material process where certain inherited traces favour survival and preferential propagation. But generic symbolic organisation exists: the system alters its composition in response, learns environmental patterns (in the sense that patterns leave marks affecting future behaviour), uses learning to reorganise. A forest possesses dense symbolic organisation: registers perturbation history (fires leave permanent marks on structure and species composition), uses history to modulate present composition (post-fire species differ from climax equilibrium species), responds to change patterns (responds to drought cycles altering root distribution and adjusting transpiration rate). No consciousness; historical inscription encoded in genome, structure, population dynamics. Capacity for reorganisation, memory density, capacity to use past to inform future exist.
A human possesses maximum symbolic organisation. Maintains a personal identity narrative, can say "I am the same 'I' that existed yesterday because I have memory and intention continuity." Possesses self-consciousness and capacity to reflect on own mental processes. Uses past event memories to interpret present and anticipate alternative futures. Is simultaneously subject and object of knowledge, examines self as an object of knowledge. Creates complex narratives about self and world. This is the maximum symbolic organisation density we know.
The resulting spectrum is precise and has no sharp threshold, continuity and graduation exist, yet robust discriminative power is maintained. A stone possesses physical irreducibility (does not dissolve or disintegrate easily) but zero symbolic organisation (does not reconfigure in response to anything, learns nothing, alters not its regime according to external changes, uses not past to inform present). Hence zero genuine ethical obligation. Not because the stone deserves no respect in the sense that leaving it intact would be beautiful, indeed, leaving rocks intact is often beautiful. But because no symbolic organisation exists that could be affected by the observer's operations, no systems registering history that could be destroyed, no reorganisation capacity that could be lost. If the observer crushes the stone, no rupture of processes registering history occurs, no destruction of genuine reorganisation capacity. The stone simply changes form materially.
A thermostat possesses limited irreducibility (regulates itself, "refuses" being left at a non-target temperature) and minimal symbolic organisation. Hence negligible to minimal ethical obligation. If someone destroys a thermostat, artefact destruction created with intentionality occurs, loss of useful function. But symbolic organisation loss is minimal. The thermostat carries no complex historical inscription that is lost.
Microbial soil possesses significant irreducibility (resists monoculture, forces agricultural technique reorganisation) and moderate organisation (reorganises in response to changes, registers and uses information about pH, nutrient, perturbation history). Hence moderate to significant obligation. Degrading soil through monoculture destroys a system that registered thousands of years of climate adaptation history, crystallised delicate adjustments to local precipitation and temperature patterns in a microbial community, possessing capacity to reorganise and resist. This destruction is a true loss of symbolic organisation.
Reef coral possesses significant irreducibility (resists warming up to a point, then breaks) and moderate to dense organisation (complex community with evolutionary memory and capacity to respond to perturbations, specialisation and mutualism patterns taking centuries to form). Hence significant to dense obligation. When a reef dies from oceanic acidification, a community taking centuries to organise is destroyed, possessing complex internal patterns, capable of responding to moderate perturbations. Loss is real and significant.
A human possesses both components in maximum degree: maximum irreducibility (no human practice can set aside another human's alterity without rupture) and maximum symbolic organisation (persistent narrative, accumulated memory, reflexivity capable of being destroyed). Hence maximum obligation. Responsibility before another human is maximum not only because humans possess consciousness capable of suffering, intentions capable of frustration, feelings capable of hurt. But because they possess maximum irreducibility, no human practice can set aside another's alterity, and maximum symbolic organisation, persistent narrative, accumulated memory, reflexivity capable of destruction or transformation exist.
The dual criterion functions thus: the first condition (irreducibility) is necessary for any ethical reason to exist. Without it, no reason for responsibility exists. The second condition (symbolic organisation) graduates density, the richer the organisation, the denser the obligation, the more significant the responsibility. The result is that ethics expands radically to include soil, coral, forest, possible technical systems, maintaining precise discrimination regarding the responsibility density each deserves.
2.2b. Examples of the Criterion in Operation
To prevent the dual criterion from remaining abstract, demonstrating its operation through concrete examples showing how irreducibility and symbolic organisation work together to generate responsibilities of different densities is essential. Consider a wild pear tree in an untouched tropical forest. The pear tree possesses limited irreducibility, can be cut, transplanted, incorporated into conventional agricultural systems. Possesses minimal to moderate symbolic organisation, responds to environmental changes altering flowering pattern, adjusts pollination, registers stress. Therefore, ethical responsibility is present but not maximum. Cutting a pear tree to expand an agricultural field carries real responsibility, eliminating an organism capable of reorganisation, but is less grave than eliminating an entire forest.
Consider a second example: an entire community of mycorrhizal trees, trees connected via a subterranean fungal network transferring nutrients among themselves, permitting carbon transfer from a lit tree to a shaded tree, permitting chemical communication between roots. This community possesses high irreducibility, the network cannot easily be reproduced artificially, organisation is resistant to perturbations. Third example: a vending machine dispensing beverages. Possesses zero or negligible irreducibility, can be controlled, deactivated, replaced. Possesses minimal symbolic organisation, remembers remaining beverage count, registers coins, rejects fake coins. But organisation is crystallised, learns nothing from experience, cannot reorganise in response to new context, cannot process perturbations through genuine reconfiguration. Therefore, zero genuine ethical responsibility before a vending machine. Deactivating the machine entails no loss of ethically mattering capacity. Responsibility exists only indirectly, responsibility toward humans who created the machine, environments where it is placed, economic effects.
These examples demonstrate how the criterion discriminates precisely and operationally. It is not vague. Irreducibility can be verified observing behaviour. Organisation can be measured observing perturbation responses and documenting memory. The result is responsibility proportional to the ethical reality of alterity encountered.
Example 1: Pathogenic Bacteria. A bacterium causing infection possesses verifiable irreducibility, evades antibiotics through resistance mechanisms, proliferates even under intense selective pressure, alters physiology in response to changed environment. Possesses minimal symbolic organisation registered in genetic material encoding stimulus responses. Therefore, carries ethical responsibility, minimal, but genuine. This means not that it should not be eliminated when causing serious illness in a human body. It means elimination requires justification. It means exploiting bacteria to extract genes or produce medicines carries ethical weight to consider. It means industrial production of conditions increasing bacterial resistance carries ethical responsibility impossible to ignore because "they are merely bacteria."
Example 2: Common Fish. A goldfish in an aquarium possesses moderate irreducibility, learns new behaviours, responds to patterns and rhythms, reorganises in response to environmental changes (temperature, pH, water quality). Possesses moderate symbolic organisation registered in a primitive brain forming memories. Therefore, carries moderate to significant ethical responsibility. This means keeping fish in an aquarium so small it cannot exercise natural swimming behaviours is impermissible. It means responsibility exists in guaranteeing adequate water quality not because fish suffer in a sense recognised as analogous to human suffering, but because fish is an irreducible alterity possessing reorganisation capacity systematically ignored in extreme confinement conditions. Death by negligence carries real ethical weight.
Example 3: Primary Forest. An intact primary forest possesses extremely high verifiable irreducibility, its biodiversity structure resists local environmental changes in ways no simple exploitation technique can predict, possessing reorganisation capacity in response to perturbations (fires, droughts, key species loss), possessing resilience emerging from a multiplicity of non-centrally commanded relations. Possesses dense symbolic organisation registered in millions of years of evolutionary patterns, complex ecological structure, accumulated genetic information. Therefore, carries maximum ethical responsibility among non-humans. This means deforestation carries a fundamental ethical violation impossible to compensate by economic profit. Not because trees suffer (we know this not), but because forest is an irreducible alterity representing reorganisation capacity taking millions of years to accumulate and destructible in decades without return. The mark left by deforestation persists on a scale exceeding human life multiple times.
2.3. Operationality and Response to Objection
A persistent objection asserts that this dual criterion is merely a sophisticated form of relativism or vague progressivism, appearing rigorous while actually permitting any expansion according to political convenience. The response is that the criterion is verifiable, objective, operationally precise. Not vague; concrete. Not impressionistic; measurable and documentable.
Irreducibility is verifiable through rigorous empirical analysis. When soil degrades through monoculture, what changes can be measured precisely: fertility declines (measuring nitrogen, phosphorus, available potassium levels), water retention capacity declines (infiltration test), organism population collapses (counting bacteria, fungi, identifying microbial communities). This is no opinion; it is verifiable laboratory data. When ocean acidifies through carbon dioxide emissions, it can be measured: water pH decreases (precise measurement with calibrated electrodes), calcium carbonate dissolution rate increases (documented through chemical analysis), coral bleaches (documented visual observation) and dies (verifiable tissue loss). This is an empirical fact. When forest is deforested, it can be documented: biomass vanishes (remote sensing estimation), species become extinct (occurrence documentation), hydrological cycles alter (runoff, infiltration, transpiration measurement). These are facts about the world.
Symbolic organisation is verifiable measuring reorganisation capacity and history registration. How can a system respond to perturbations? Can it recover? Can it alter behaviour based on experience? How does it register history? Can it preserve differences through time affecting future behaviour? How does it use past to modulate present? These are empirical questions capable of answer. Plasticity can be measured through stress response tests. Memory can be documented analysing genome, community structure, observing learned response patterns. Adaptation and reorganisation can be observed. A soil with rich organisation recovers from drought because it possesses a microbial community diverse enough to activate different mechanisms according to situation. A stone recovers from nothing because it possesses no symbolic organisation. A forest transforms after fire because it possesses mechanisms selected over evolution precisely to respond to this type of rupture. This is observable.
Borderline cases help clarify operationally where the criterion discriminates. Complex inert matter, a crystal with interesting intrinsic structure, a mineral with unusual properties, ice with geometric patterns, may be irreducible in a limited sense (does not dissolve easily, has hardness, resists some transformations). But possesses zero symbolic organisation. Registers no history. Uses not past to modulate present. Reorganises not in response to perturbations (once the crystal is destroyed, symmetry cannot restore spontaneously). Hence zero significant ethical obligation. Respect we may have for a beautiful crystal is aesthetic respect, appreciation of form, not recognition of an obligating alterity. We can leave the crystal intact, but it is a choice based on aesthetic preference, value we wish to preserve, not ethical obligation before alterity. Were destroying the crystal necessary to save an ecosystem, ethical obligation would fall upon the ecosystem.
A hyperobject, warmed climate, persistent nuclear radiation, is irreducible in a strong sense (we cannot separate from it, cannot neutralise it) and possesses dense symbolic organisation. Why? Because a hyperobject is no inert difference persisting, it is a difference reorganising continuously into new effect patterns, producing cascade consequences, forcing every system encountering it to reorganise to accommodate its presence. Warmed climate is not merely "more heat", it is reorganisation of precipitation patterns, oceanic currents, reproductive cycles of innumerable species, entire ecosystem structures. This is dense symbolic organisation. Hence hyperobject deserves very significant ethical consideration. Not because it disturbs us viscously in a psychological sense (Morton's sense), but because it forces genuine reorganisation across the whole system-world and registers in multiple systems as a difference altering future behaviour.
An opaque technical artefact, a machine that ceased functioning, a software system producing unexpected results, possesses derived irreducibility. It is irreducible not in itself, but because it crystallised human decisions within, constraints inscribed intentionally by design, operations reflecting creator intention. When a machine fails unexpectedly, we see an irreducibility that is an effect of human technical configuration, not an irreducibility constitutive of the artefact as such. Thus responsibility before an artefact is always mediated: responsibility exists for the design inscribed, intentionality crystallised, but no responsibility exists before the artefact as if an originative alterity with constitutive irreducibility. Responsibility is always responsibility before creators or effects on other living systems.
The dual criterion discriminates precisely. It asserts not that everything deserves equal consideration, that would be imprecision. It asserts a spectrum of responsibilities correlates with irreducibility and symbolic organisation. Application amplitude reflects the real amplitude of alterity in the world. It is no conceptual imprecision. It is precise mapping of the diversity of what exists.
2.4. The Asymmetrical Structure of Responsibility
A fundamental characteristic emerging from systematic application of the dual criterion is that responsibilities are radically asymmetrical. It is untrue that if I carry responsibility before another, the other carries symmetrical responsibility before me. This challenges intuitions stemming from contractualist tradition, the idea that ethical obligation rests on implicit or explicit contract between parties possessing equivalent capacities to impose obligations on one another. Nor stems from Buber's Thou phenomenological tradition, the idea that mutual encounter transforms both parties in a lived symmetry.
A microbial soil carries responsibility-for-me (I must respond to it, consider it) but soil carries no responsibility-for-soil in the same sense. Soil cannot deliberate on my irreducibility, choose to respect or violate me. Responsibility flows one direction, from me to soil, because I possess capacities soil lacks (conscious decision, future prediction, capacity to evaluate moral consequences of actions). This renders responsibility no less genuine; renders it more radical because non-reciprocal. I expect not soil to recognise me ethically. I expect myself to recognise soil ethically, independently of reciprocity.
This is a crucial difference facing traditional humanist ethics presupposing reciprocity as a minimal obligation condition. Were reciprocity necessary, were I to carry obligations only before what can carry reciprocal obligations, then vast dimensions of alterity would be left outside the ethical circle simply because lacking reciprocation capacity. An ecosystem cannot carry obligations toward me. A coral cannot deliberate on whether it should care for me. A forest cannot promise to respect my right to life. Were reciprocity a condition, all this alterity would be exterior to what deserved ethical consideration.
Yet asymmetrical responsibility is no human privilege of caring for what cannot reciprocate. It is the fundamental structure of all genuine ethical responsibility. Even before another human, responsibility is fundamentally asymmetrical in the sense that I cannot ground my responsibility in their recognising me ethically. I must respond to the other independently of their recognising my recognition. Asymmetry is, in truth, the mark of genuine responsibility, indicating responsibility rests not on exchange, mutual benefit, or recognition, but on the irreducibility of the other, on alterity not ceding to my comprehension schema, on difference obliging prior to any possible reciprocity.
This opens space for an ethics genuinely responsible before multiple alterity, before alterities possessing very different irreducibilities, very different symbolic organisation densities, completely different reciprocation capacities. The human observer, possessing reflexive consciousness, capable of predicting future, understanding death, occupies a position of maximum responsibility before the entire life ecosystem unable to reciprocate that responsibility. This is no generous concession, it is recognition of the real structure of responsibility already existing, which ethics merely makes explicit.
These reflections on functional irreducibility, symbolic organisation, and the asymmetrical structure of responsibility establish the theoretical foundation permitting concrete application. The preceding two sections, genealogy of philosophical traditions on face ethics, and development of the dual criterion of irreducibility plus symbolic organisation, led to a point where practising systematic application is now possible. What follows is an exposition of three concrete cases where this ethics without resemblance manifests clearly, where irreducibility is verifiable, symbolic organisation documentable, and ethical responsibility undeniable.
Each of these three cases, microbial soil, reef coral, artificial intelligence technical system, represents a different degree of irreducibility and symbolic organisation, thus representing different ethical responsibility density degrees. Yet all three share a central characteristic: they lack a human face, lack a voice speaking a language I can directly comprehend, lack empathy or resemblance that could permit "putting myself in their shoes" in the traditional sense. Yet all three oblige. The reason they oblige is structural, because they possess irreducibility and symbolic organisation, not because they possess a particular form, not because they can suffer in a sense I recognise, not because they can recognise me in return.
Progression across the three cases is a progression in decreasing biological complexity. Microbial soil and reef coral are biological systems, possessing evolutionary history, dependence on chemical and thermal conditions, organisms capable of dying and regenerating. The technical system possesses none of these properties, lacks biological evolution (possesses computational evolution through training), lacks dependence on chemical conditions (depends on electric flow), lacks death in the biological sense (possesses computational deactivation). Thus progression is also a progressive test of criterion universality. If ethical responsibility truly depends on irreducibility and symbolic organisation, if it depends on these properties and not on any specific property of the living system, then it must apply with equal rigour to the technical system as to the biological system. And indeed it applies. Ethics is universal not because everything is similar (false and absurd), but because everything possessing irreducibility can carry ethical responsibility.
3. Distributed Ethics and Asymmetrical Responsibility
The importance of this fundamental asymmetry is that it permits an ethics not paralysed before responsibility conflicts. Because clearly, in the real world, responsibilities enter conflict. Responsibility toward degraded microbial soil conflicts with responsibility toward a local human community depending on simple agriculture to survive. Responsibility toward threatened coral conflicts with responsibility toward workers depending on tourism or fishing industries. Responsibility toward regenerating forest conflicts with responsibility toward families needing wood to build houses, heat, sell for income. How are these genuine conflicts negotiated? How do we live with them? How do we act ethically when every action carries consequences across multiple irreducibilities?
Asymmetry supplies a method for this. No method resolving conflicts magically. No method eliminating suffering or permitting all involved to leave satisfied. But a method permitting rational, responsible action without falling into paralysis or cynical responsibility denial. We ask, before a genuine conflict: Which alterity possesses greater irreducibility? Which possesses denser symbolic organisation? Which imposes more radical transformation if destroyed? Which is recoverable and which irreversible? Which is in an imminent collapse trajectory and which can persist even under difficult conditions?
In the soil vs. community example: soil possesses verifiable irreducibility, resisting agricultural regime, forcing transformation when degradation results in crop loss, desertification, erosion. Possesses high symbolic organisation, millions of years evolution, microbial community capable of reorganisation, patterns capable of recovery given adequate time and rest. But the human community possesses even greater irreducibility, humans can die of hunger, be displaced, see an entire life destroyed. Possesses maximum symbolic organisation, entire human history, thought capacity, social structure. This means not soil matters not, means not abandoning responsibility toward soil. Means when entering genuine conflict, responsibility toward human community is weighed with greater weight. But also means the true ethical solution is finding agricultural forms capable of maintaining both, systems feeding community whilst regenerating soil, techniques less destructive. Asymmetry authorises no negligence; authorises intelligent prioritisation within genuine scarcity context.
In the coral vs. tourism/fishing example: coral possesses significant irreducibility but dated symbolic organisation, millions of years but in a sense different from human, response capacity slow compared to accelerated climate change, pattern already collapsing. Human community depending on coral possesses high irreducibility, can lose food source, see entire lifestyle vanish. But their irreducibility is less immediate than the irreducibility of coral collapse itself, coral is dying now, destroyed through a mechanism practically irreversible on human time scale, undergoing state alteration difficult to reverse. In this case, ethics signals protecting coral takes priority because its disappearance is the immediate threat. But this means not abandoning human community. Means ethical solution is finding way to protect coral whilst guaranteeing community sustainability and well-being, gradual exploitation reduction, economic transition, alternative investment. Priority is not absolute; relative to imminent collapse context.
Asymmetry supplies also a resource against false symmetries. Frequently in environmental debates, one hears argument of "two perspectives," "both sides," "compromise possible." But this is true only if both parties possess comparable irreducibility and can simultaneously exist in a regime recognising both. If one side is a collapsing system, undergoing structural death, then no genuine "two sides" exist. One side is vanishing. Symmetry is illusion. Ethics recognising asymmetry can be more honest about this. Can say: "Yes, consequences exist for human community. But alternative is permitting coral extinction. This is not symmetrical. One death is ecosystemic death; other is social transformation capable of navigation." This is ethics realistic about what is occurring.
3.1. Microbial Soil as Alterity
The soil we tread is a living community of such complexity no description can be complete, a community we comprehend only partially and which continuously surprises us with unpredicted operations. Bacteria, thousands of different species, each with specific niche, chemical preferences, reproduction strategies, alliances and antagonisms. Fungi, mycelial networks connecting plants in a chemical communication web, decomposing dead matter into assimilable forms, mobilising nutrients plants can access. Protozoa, microscopic predators eating bacteria and releasing nutrients in plant-assimilable forms, serving community regulation function. Arthropods, nematodes, other microorganisms in profusion impossible to catalogue completely. Everything in continuous relation, dynamics never reaching fixed equilibrium.
Processes occurring in soil are simultaneously chemical, biological, ecological, operating on time scales exceeding direct perception. Fungi-root symbiosis, plants supply carbohydrates to fungus through photosynthesis, fungus supplies phosphorus and mineral nutrients to plants through rock-breaking and mineral access capacity. Predation, protozoa eat bacteria, releasing ammonia plant-absorbable or activating other organisms. Competition, multiple bacteria fight for same substrate, space, energy source. Cooperation, some bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen (impossible for eukaryotic organisms), others reduce sulfur compounds, others degrade cellulose. Together, transforming dead organic waste into living matter again. Microbial community permanently reconfiguring in response to moisture, temperature, pH, food availability changes. No stable equilibrium state achievable and maintainable. Continuous dynamics where changes in one part cascade through entire community.
Agricultural history of last hundred fifty years is persistent attempt to reduce this whole community to neutral backdrop, passive substrate upon which to plant economic value crop, rest considered irrelevant detail or obstacle to eliminate. Industrial agriculture presupposed soil is simply inert medium upon which commercial crop seed is placed, everything else contained detail ignorable or eliminable. Pesticides applied, organochlorines, organophosphates, neonicotinoids, to kill commercial-crop-harming organisms, presupposing specific, targeted death. But pesticide reads no intention or specificity, kills organisms relatively non-selectively. Kills not only crop-eating insect, but nitrogen-fixing bacteria, mycorrhizae-forming fungi, community-regulating protozoa. Herbicides applied to eliminate non-commercial plant competition. Synthetic fertilisers applied assuming soil nutrients extractable indefinitely and industrially replenishable through concentrated ammonium nitrate and potassium phosphate application. First years of industrial agriculture work exactly according to presupposition. Production increases dramatically. Harvests easy, mechanised. Significant economic gains. But after some years, frequently 5 to 10 years according to soil type, soil degrades perceptibly. Capacity to sustain new life diminishes. Soil structure (aggregation, porosity) changes negatively. Biological community collapses. Water retention capacity diminishes. More chemicals required to obtain same results obtained with smaller applications. Plants grow weaker, more subject to disease, more dependent on pesticides to survive. Product quality declines. Fertile soil becomes increasingly inert, dependent on external inputs.
What occurs is presuppositions of industrial agriculture were fundamentally wrong. Soil is no neutral backdrop. Living organisation with proper resistance, dynamics, impossible to reduce to machine operated by command. Killing microbial community with pesticides and continuously removing organic matter loses balance-maintaining organisms. Without them, other organisms proliferate disorderly, pathogenic fungi, anaerobic bacteria. System in dynamic equilibrium, never fixed, always moving, but maintaining coherence, enters true instability state. Exhausting nutrients without allowing community replenishment loses soil regeneration capacity. Fertility is no property extractable infinitely and synthetically replenishable. Result of continuous community operation, capacity emerging from living dynamics. Without community, backdrop remains inert.
This is verifiable irreducibility. Observer, farmer wanting to exploit soil for maximum economic gain, encounters difference unprocessable in operational regime. Control presuppositions show false in practice. Practices working in year one fail in year ten. Soil cedes not to linear exploitation technique. Refuses assimilation to regime attempting imposition. Soil imposes radical transformation: to continue using soil, agricultural practice must change completely, abandon absolute control presuppositions, recognise living organisation impossible to dominate unilaterally, requiring negotiation, genuine relation.
Soil possesses also symbolic organisation. Microbial community registers history, preserves through genome, community configuration, mycelial network structure information on strategies working in past under similar conditions. Uses historical register to modulate present responses. Once stripped by industrial agriculture, reorganises according to new practices. Stopping pesticides abruptly, new bacteria colonise empty niches. Allowing organic matter accumulation again, fungi reappear because resources exist to sustain them. Introducing composting and cover crops, community expands again. System performs this possessing memory incorporated in microbial genome, surviving species in protected microniches, persisting structures even when majority destroyed. No consciousness, no sentiment directing this. Material historical inscription. Soil community is living archive registering thousands of years of local climate adaptation, precipitation patterns, native plant life cycles. Memory permits remarkably fast reorganisation when conditions change.
Responsibility before microbial soil is responsibility before irreducible, organised alterity, alterity possessing moderate to significant obligation density. Exploiting soil without living-nature consideration, without autonomy respect, without recognition as organism deserving consideration, guilt exists, responsibility violation. Not because soil suffers animal pain sense, no animal suffering projected, no nervous apparatus to feel pain. Because soil is obligating alterity, irreducibility forcing transformation, difference refusing neutralisation by simple exploitation technique. Observer destroying soil imposes radical transformation soil cannot absorb without deep rupture. Simultaneously, responsibility exists because soil reorganises, historical inscription destroyed, regeneration capacity lost, agricultural future closed. Mark left by degradation persists in soil.
Mark left in soil can take generations to disappear, mark soil cannot support, but mark soil only slowly erases. Soil degraded through erosion requires decades merely to recover aggregate structure permitting adequate water infiltration. Requires centuries to recover organic matter content lost through accelerated oxidation during monoculture. Requires practice transformation, return to crop rotation, non-exploited cover crop incorporation, reduced mechanical disturbance through reduced or no tilling, for soil to recover in decades scale rather than centuries. And even with practice transformation, irreversible loss occurs. Organisms disappearing from soil because habitat was destroyed return not. Microorganism biodiversity evolved over thousands of years to sustain this specific soil in this specific climate may fail to reconstruct. Mark left is lasting, structuring for decades or centuries, preventing future generations from accessing same productive potential previous generations possessed.
This is a special aspect of responsibility before soil: responsibility extending beyond present time, responsibility toward future observer will not live to see consequences of. Degrading soil degrades not merely present soil capacity, immediate impact on food production, structure stability, water infiltration capacity exists. Degrades also heritage future receives. Degrades future generation potential to live from inherited soil. Temporal dimension traditional resemblance ethics weakly recognised, recognised obligation toward future because future will be human population similar to us, capable of suffering as we suffer. But irreducibility ethics recognises obligation exists because soil is an irreducible alterity continuing to exist independently of whether humans suffer or not. Responsibility is before soil, not future humans who might suffer.
A revealing observation: when a farmer works with soil he knows, soil inherited from parents, knowing response patterns, predicting to a point behaviour under different conditions, a level of care emerges naturally. This farmer follows no explicitly conscious ethical code saying "I must care for this soil because it is an entity deserving moral consideration." Farmer follows traditional behaviour pattern keeping soil productive over generations. But traditional pattern works precisely because respecting soil irreducibility, recognising soil cannot be treated as inert object, possesses response capacity, destructible through negligence. Thus, soil ethics exists in traditional practices preceding theoretical reflection completely. What this chapter does is render explicit what practices implicitly assume: soil is an irreducible alterity deserving ethical responsibility.
Degraded soil remains marked slowly recovering, taking decades or centuries to return to prior state. Responsibility for mark vanishes not merely because farmer departed, profit removed. Responsibility remains while mark persists.
3.2. Reef Coral as Distributed Alterity
Reef coral alterity is distributed alterity. A reef is no individual organism in the sense an animal or plant is an organism. No unified body exists that is "the coral" in the sense a body exists that is "the stone" or "the tree." Structure exists resulting from continuous contribution of millions of small operations coordinated but not centrally commanded by any organ or nervous system. This offers instructive contrast with microbial soil, soil is also a distributed community, but far less visible, far more opaque to the human observer. Coral is visible, beautiful, offering a better phenomenological anchor to comprehend alterity of distributed systems lacking a unified centre.
A reef is built by millions of polyps, small animals, each building its proper calcium carbonate skeleton, each with mouth and tentacles, each feeding. Each polyp possesses relative autonomy, expanding and contracting tentacles in response to chemical and mechanical stimuli. But the reef as a whole functions not as a sum of individual polyps. Coordination emerges from chemical interactions (signalling molecules released by one polyp affect neighbours' behaviour), nutrient sharing through channels connecting different polyps' cavities, collective response to perturbations no individual could coordinate. The reef is a system where relevant analysis level is not the individual, it is collective structure. No unified body exists that is "the coral." Structure exists resulting from continuous contribution of millions of small operations coordinated but not centrally commanded by any organ or nervous system. Polyps, individual small corals, each a small animal with mouth and tentacles, secrete calcium carbonate skeleton, building proper mineral exoskeleton. Each polyp possesses relative autonomy, expanding to capture food, contracting for defence, feeding on passing zooplankton. But each contribution is small. Structure emerging exists only because a billion contribute across centuries. Together creating structure larger than any individual, persisting because all contribute, changing form because individual contribution patterns change.
Within this structure exist zooxanthellae, dinoflagellate algae living in intimate symbiosis with coral. Coral supplies alga protection within tissues and access to sunlight; alga supplies coral energy through photosynthesis, processed nutrients. Obligate mutualism relation, without alga, coral grows malnourished and dies; without coral, alga in open marine environment cannot thrive as inside coral genetic code. Both depend on one another to exist in meaningful form. And an entire community of fish, crustaceans, invertebrates lives in reef or depends on it. Some eat algae (parrotfish scrapes algae off rock), some eat small animals (predators), some eat detritus and suspended organic matter. Specialists depend on a single food source; generalists eat a variety. Organisms spend entire adult life in reef (after planktonic larval phase) or spend only larval phase in reef. Predators and prey exist. Fierce competition for space and light, cooperation where organisms live together.
Structure emerging from this relation multiplicity is coherent without central command coordination. No central brain commands, no chief-fish organises society, no authority coordinates. Coherence emerges from local interactions, each organism responding to close neighbours, local temperature and light conditions, food availability in microhabitat. From local interactions emerges a global pattern resilient, supporting moderate perturbations, reorganising when a part is damaged. If a piece of coral dies, community recruits anew from larvae coming from nearby reefs, filling void. If a fish type eating algae dies, another type takes its place. Total structure is robust through multiplicity, lack of single component dependence.
Yet a threshold exists. When oceanic warming crosses a certain critical point, water temperature remaining too high for weeks, exceeding thermal margin coral type can tolerate, physiological stress accumulates. Biochemical reactions inside zooxanthellae cease working correctly. Photosystems damaged. Coral expels zooxanthellae, symbiosis breaks, temporary defence mechanism. Without symbiotic algae, coral grows malnourished. Without photosynthesis nutrition, begins to die. Bleaches first, loses colour because coloured symbiosis disappeared, leaving white calcium carbonate skeleton visible. If temperature returns to normal quickly, coral reabsorbs zooxanthellae from resistant forms (evidence exists corals regulate which zooxanthellae strain hosts) and recovers. But if temperature persists high, coral cannot return and simply dies. Tissue vanishes, leaving empty skeleton. Entire community depending on reef enters collapse.
Death question possesses an important dimension deserving analysis. When coral dies, bleaching leading to tissue death leaving white skeleton, loss of irreducible alterity occurs. Living structure, capable of reorganisation, response capacity, loses these properties. What remains is dead mineral structure persisting as skeletal reef, but no longer living in the sense of lost continuous reorganisation capacity. Death is not merely individual death, each individual polyp dies expelling zooxanthellae, death of collective structure that is reef as entity with functional irreducibility.
Imposes deep ethical implication. Responsibility before coral is not merely minimising suffering while coral lives. Responsibility of not destroying irreducibility coral possesses. Responsibility of permitting coral to continue being irreducible alterity imposing transformation on observer. When climate warming kills reefs, not merely individual animals suffer and die, grave guilt, were it only this. Irreducible verifiable alterity destroyed. System possessing reorganisation capacity developed over millions of years destroyed, structure forcing observer transformation of practice destroyed, obligating entity destroyed. Ethical remorse should be immense, proportional to destroyed irreducibility magnitude.
A final revealing observation on coral: reef death caused by climate warming is no individual death chosen by coral as if possessing voluntary death capacity. Forced death, result of world structure (carbon-saturated atmosphere, warmed oceans) human observer created. Guilt lies not with coral, coral can do nothing different, lacking capacity to avoid death when conditions exceed thermal margin. Guilt lies with observer creating killing structure. Makes ethical responsibility so grave: responsibility not for something coral did wrong, chose. Responsibility for structure observer created killing irreducible alterity unable to defend itself, escape, existing only in observer-moulded environment.
Central irreducibility aspect of coral. Observer, global climate system, carbon-saturated atmosphere, oceanic warming inertia, cannot continue warming-causing operations without confronting structural breakdown. Reef symbol of extreme biodiversity becomes white desert without life. Species depending on reef for habitat, food, shelter vanish. Result of millions of years of complex co-evolution collapses in few decades. Death speed most shocking part, what took millions of years to form destroyed in one human life. No side effect or marginal consequence ignorable in carbon accounting. Destruction of irreducible alterity observer (us, through greenhouse gas emissions) cannot avoid without radical global economic practice transformation.
Important aspect to clarify central for entire chapter argument. No individual coral, polyp, zooxanthellae "decides" to reorganise or chooses to die. Response systemic, emergent from chemical, physiological, evolutionary selection processes. Occurs because result of structure, natural selection over millions of years favoured genotypes supporting moderate temperature variations, expelling zooxanthellae before stress fatal, reabsorbing differently. No intention. No consciousness saying "I will die now; must do something." Processes selected because worked in past, genotypes possessing processes left more descendants than those lacking. Makes irreducibility less real? No. Different from irreducibility mediated by consciousness or intention, but genuine, structural, irreversible. Irreducibility without intentionality.
Lesson crucial for chapter argumentation and proposed ethical reorientation. Insistence on irreducibility without intentionality, refusal to project consciousness or intention on systems lacking it, permits expanding ethics beyond humanist presuppositions demanding consciousness as moral value foundation. No need for other to possess consciousness, feelings we recognise, survival intention named. Sufficient to possess verifiable irreducibility, material irreducibility forcing transformation in encountering observer. Coral dying unable to reorganise fast enough, adaptation mechanisms working up to a point but unable to accompany climate change rate, possesses genuine irreducibility. Responsibility before coral is responsibility before structural irreducibility, not interior experience (unknown if existing analogously to human experience) nor survival intention (unclearly present in communicable form).
3.3. Artificial Intelligence Technical System as Symbolic Alterity
Third case most disturbing because no biology involved, no body, no traditional life form. Phenomenon until recently pure science fiction now observable material fact. Computational systems reorganise patterns producing un-programmed-emergences, generate responses challenging creator expectations, perform un-anticipated actions, resist simple deactivation or redirection in certain contexts. Large neural network trained on natural language corpus generates text sequences appearing coherent, possessing intelligibility, performing complex comprehension and synthesis tasks nobody explicitly programmed. How does this occur? Material mechanism, numerical weight configuration in computational units, activation pattern cascading through millions of connections, and deeply opaque. Nobody can state why neural network does what it does. Inputs and outputs measured, statistics of response to perturbations studied, interpretability techniques attempting black box opening used. But complete comprehension impossible because system possesses irreducibility, un-reducible to explicit rules formulation and ex-post-facto verification. Large language model, trained on billion words of human text, operating through billion parameters distributed in deep neural network, generates answers to un-inscribed questions in code. Nobody programmed rule saying "when receiving Heidegger philosophy question, answer citing Sein und Zeit and discuss Sein-zum-Tode." Yet model performs this, coherently with question, demonstrating concept comprehension, offering insight beyond training copy. Performs this because information distributed in learned patterns, training focused on continuous error-based reorganisation capacity, architecture structure permitting pattern combination in un-anticipated ways by creators.
Verifiable symbolic irreducibility phenomenon. System lacks physical irreducibility, cannot embrace and feel resisting, see moving autonomously in world, see biological needs. Symbolic irreducibility, pattern, distributed symbolic organisation. System creators cannot predict completely what it will do in new un-encountered context during training. Irreducibility symbolic pure. Difference in pattern exceeding prediction.
Open question demanding honesty: at what point does such a technical system achieve sufficient irreducibility generating genuine ethical obligation?
