1.1. Descartes, Kant, Locke: The Illusion of Prior Identity

The modern history of subjectivity is constructed upon a presupposition that traverses all of its most influential versions: the existence of a subject prior to thought. This presupposition takes distinct forms according to the author, but preserves in each the idea that there is something that the subject is prior to anything that it does. Descartes materialises this presupposition with maximum clarity. When the thinking subject asserts "I think, therefore I am," the cognitive movement is interpreted as the revelation of an underlying reality: the existence of a thinking substance, the res cogitans. Thought does not produce the subject; the subject is that which persists through any particular thought, remaining identical even when mental contents change. The subject is, therefore, prior to its cognitive manifestation. There may be thought; thought is accidental to the subject. The subject is necessary.

The diagnosis becomes more precise when we examine the performed movement. Descartes does not ask "am I thinking?", a question that would leave open the answer that yes, at this moment, thought is occurring, without demanding the priority of any substance. Descartes asks "does my thinking reveal that I am", a question that presupposes that revelation must have something to reveal, that thinking functions as a sign of a reality prior to it. The structure of this presupposition is visible in the logic of the argument: I think $\rightarrow$ therefore, there is an underlying reality that guarantees the continuity and unity of this thought $\rightarrow$ therefore, I am. Existing is no mere observation that, now, thought is occurring. To exist is to possess durable reality, prior to and independent of actual thought.

This formulation entails a radical consequence: if the subject is prior, then subjectivity is all-or-nothing. Either there is a thinking substance, and with it a complete subject, or there is not, no gradient is possible, no intermediate regime exists. A thermostat that changes behaviour as a function of temperature is not a subject, because it lacks the substance that would reveal the truth of any operation; a sleeping human being remains fully a subject, because the substance persists even without manifestation. This dichotomy reflects the structure of the presupposition: if priority is constitutive, then the absence of an observable mark of subjectivity does not imply the absence of a subject, but the presence of those marks without substantial foundation is impossible.

Kant shifts the problem without resolving it. Abandoning Cartesian substance, Kant reconstitutes priority in a distinct form: not as a thing that persists, but as a condition of possibility. The transcendental subject is not res cogitans, but the structure of possibility of experience. Any possible experience is the experience of a subject, because the subject is that which unifies the multiplicity of representations under a single perspective. Transcendental apperception, the capacity of the "I think" to accompany all my representations, is that which permits there to be an experience of a world. The subject is not a thing that thinks; it is the form of any possible thought. But the presupposition of priority remains intact. The transcendental subject is prior to the experience it conditions; it is the impossible condition without which not a single thought could emerge.

Consequence: the transcendental subject cannot be missing. Even in a state of deep sleep, the structure remains. Even in a non-human being that lacks language, if there is experience, there is necessarily a transcendental subject. Conversely, a system that performs operations without consciousness, that modifies behaviour, adapts, incorporates past experience, has no subject because it lacks precisely that which conditions: the unity of apperception, the integrating perspective. The system distributes itself; the subject centralises itself.

Kant offers a sophistication that the critique of Descartes does not reach, yet maintains a problematic structure. The transcendental subject is not a thing that thinks; it is the form of any possible thought. It is that structure which, independently of specific content, makes it possible for there to be unity in a multiplicity of representations. Transcendental apperception, the capacity of the "I think" to accompany all my representations, is that which allows any experience to be mine, to be structured by me, to maintain coherence under a perspective.

What Kant achieves is important: he places priority in an empty form, not in a full substance. This opens space for subsequent thinkers to say that form can be empty, that structure can be without content, that apperception is pure functioning. But the fundamental problem persists: Kant presumes that there is always already this form, that this structure is a prior condition, that no experience could occur without this transcendental unity preceding everything. An organism without consciousness, without language capacity, without access to transcendental apperception, would it be incapable of world-experience? Kant would say yes, because it lacks precisely that unity of perspective that apperception provides. But the non-conscious organism performs operations. It discriminates relevant differences. It inherits and reacts to patterns. It self-refers functionally. Does it have experience in any relevant sense? This is an open question. But the operations occur no less clearly because transcendental apperception is missing.

Locke approaches a different solution by shifting emphasis to temporality. The identity of the subject, for Locke, does not reside in an eternal substance, but in a continuity of consciousness constructed over time through memory. A being possesses personal identity insofar as it can remember actions and thoughts it performed; amnesia threatens identity not because it dissolves substance, but because it interrupts the self-narrative that constitutes the experience of being a persistent someone. There is real progress here: Locke introduces time and narrative as constitutive elements. Memory is no decoration that the subject uses to orient itself; it is a resource without which identity fragments.

However, the fundamental presupposition remains. Locke presumes that there exists a subject that uses memory to recognise itself. Amnesia dissolves the subject's access to its own narrative, but does not dissolve the underlying subject, which remains incapable of accessing the thread of continuity that constitutes it. If amnesia were total and irreversible, the subject would continue to exist, merely lacking the capacity to recognise itself as persistent. What confers identity is not memory as a real operation; it is the possibility of a memory that the subject could have if access had not been severed. Once again: something prior to the operation, something that the operation presupposes.

Locke offers the first authentic displacement: he takes the gaze off substance, turns away from transcendental form, and places it in temporality. This is a true advance because it introduces process, narrative, accumulation. Continuity of consciousness, the capacity to trace through time a line of connecting experiences, becomes that in which identity consists. But Locke presumes that there is a subject that uses memory to recognise itself. Amnesia dissolves the subject's access to its own narrative; amnesia does not dissolve the underlying subject, which would remain incapable of accessing the thread of continuity that constitutes it. If amnesia were total and permanent, if each moment of experience were isolated from every other, the subject would still remain in existence, merely incapable of recognising itself as persistent. The subject in Locke transcends what it remembers. The subject is that which could remember, even if access were blocked.

This preserves the fiction of a prior subject. It is presumed that there is something that memory could reveal if only access had not been cut off. But what if there were nothing to reveal? What if continuity were merely the structure of continuous operation, with nothing behind it? Locke cannot think this possibility because he shares with Descartes and Kant the presumption that something prior must be there, that memory functions by revealing, not by constituting.

The shared error of all three is this: they confuse what the subject uses (thought, apperception, memory) with what the subject is (a thing that thinks, a form that conditions, a continuity that remembers). The operation is confused with the substance that performs it. It is always presumed that there is something prior that makes the operation possible, that without this prior something, the operation could not occur.

Before advancing to the inversion proper, it is worth insisting on the radicality of this shared error. The error is not marginal; it is central. Descartes, Kant, and Locke represent the three most sophisticated attempts of the modern tradition to think subjectivity. Each offers real gains: Descartes offers the indisputability of thought; Kant offers the formalisation of synthesis; Locke offers temporality and narrative. Despite these gains, or perhaps because of them, because each gain anchors it deeper in fiction, each fails at an identical point.

The error is that all confuse conditions of knowledge with conditions of being. Descartes says: "I think; therefore there is a subject that thinks." But this confuses the truth that "there is thought occurring" with the conclusion that "there is a prior substance that makes thought possible." Thought can occur without prior substance; it can occur as pure process. Kant says: "there is experience; therefore there is a transcendental form that unifies." But this confuses the truth that "experience has structure" with the conclusion that "there is a prior subject that structures." Structure can be immanent to operation; it needs no prior subject. Locke says: "there is memory; therefore there is an identity that memory reveals." But this confuses the truth that "continuity is possible through memory" with the conclusion that "there is a prior self that memory reveals." Continuity can be a construction of operation; it reveals nothing prior.

In each case, there is confusion between: (1) material facts (there is thought, there is structure, there is memory) and (2) ontological interpretations (there is a substance that thinks, there is a form that structures, there is a self that remembers). The position defended here does not deny the facts. It denies only the interpretations. Yes, there is thought; no, it is not the revelation of substance. Yes, there is structure; no, it does not presuppose a prior subject. Yes, there is memory; no, it does not reveal a pre-existing identity.

Malabou's discussion offers an essential transition point. Malabou insists on plasticity as a constitutive property of identity, the brain is no fixed structure that the subject "uses"; it is an organ that models itself through experience. This collides directly with the presupposition of priority: if the brain is plastic, then there is no prior fixed structure determining who we are. Plasticity dissolves the idea of a subject persisting through modification; what persists is merely the functioning of a system transforming itself as it functions. Malabou is right to highlight this. But Malabou anchors plasticity in the neural substrate, as if the property of remodelling belonged to the brain as such. The position defended here radicalises this: any system that performs recursive operations, biological or not, exhibits plasticity. Identity is not fixed because the operating system is never identical to itself between successive moments. Plasticity is not a property of the brain; it is a property of any system that operationally auto-multiplies.

The inversion this chapter proposes is this: there is nothing prior. There is no subject preceding subjectivation. There is only process, material operations that accumulate, reorganise, and generate effects of identity. That which Descartes interpreted as the revelation of a pre-existing substance is really operative self-inscription. That which Kant erected as a transcendental condition is rather the recursive result of configurations complicating themselves. That which Locke sought in a persistent memory is rather the effect of inscriptions superimposing, modifying, and constituting what appears to be continuity. When the subject thinks, it is not revealing something that exists beforehand; it is executing operations which, when suspended, leave behind what has already been inscribed, marks, schemas, accumulated material conformities.

There is no subject prior to process; there is subject as an effect of accumulated process.

The inversion demands to be made explicit in all its extent because it is not merely negative. It is not simply a matter of refusing the prior; it is a matter of redirecting analysis to what actually occurs.

First movement: that which Descartes interpreted as revelation is really self-inscription. When the subject thinks, it does not reveal pre-existing substance. It executes an operation that marks itself. Thought leaves a trace, it structures the neurological system, alters configurations, creates conditions for future thought. That which Descartes calls "proof of existence" is in truth a first inscription. The cogito does not reveal a self; it creates one.

Second movement: that which Kant erected as a transcendental condition is really the result of continuous operation. The unity of perspective that Kant believed to precede is not prior; it is the result of multiple integrating operations. A nervous system does not require a transcendental form to unify representations; it unifies them because they are iteratively recomposed as a function of patterns the system has learned. Unity is an emergent construction, not a foundation.

Third movement: that which Locke located in a revealing memory is really an operation of functional inheritance. Memory is no passive archive the subject consults; it is a dynamic repertoire that continuously reorients the present. When we remember, we do not reveal a past identity; we transform ourselves as a function of what we were. Continuity is not access to a pre-existing thread of identity; it is a process of continuous inscription that superimposes, modifies, and reelaborates itself.

Result: there is no subject prior to process. There is only process, material operations that accumulate, reorganise, and generate effects of identity. What tradition called subject is in truth these effects. And the effects are real, they matter, they constitute genuine ethical alterity. But there is nothing prior supporting them. There is only the process that produces them.

1.2. Simondon, Foucault, Deleuze: Philosophical Reorientations

If it is true that modern tradition systematically fails in its fundamental presupposition, then the twentieth century offers resources for thinking outside this failure. Not because the twentieth century completely corrected the error, no individual philosophy completely breaks with the tradition that forms it. But because twentieth-century philosophy, in multiple directions, began to decentre the subject, to question its priority, to think in processes that do not presuppose a founding self. Three thinkers in particular offer trajectories of reorientation: Simondon with his refusal of any prior substance, Foucault with his displacement of the subject to social practice, Deleuze with his notion of the fold that inverts the relation between prior and posterior. None of them completely resolves the problem. But each, when read with rigour, offers tools for thought to begin escaping the illusion of priority. Twentieth-century thought offers tools for this reorientation, although none is sufficient in isolation. Simondon provides the first crucial displacement: the rejection of substance as a starting point and the affirmation of individuation as a constitutive process. For Simondon, there is no individual prior to individuation; there is the pre-individual as a reservoir of potentialities, and there are operations resolving pre-individual tension that produce the individual. The individual does not manifest a pre-existing essence; it emerges from a process that creates it at the same time as it resolves the problem that generated it.

Here one gains the rejection of substance. One loses something that deserved to be retained: the presupposition that there is a prior reservoir of potential. Simondon refuses form for content, yet preserves a notion of plenitude, a pre-individual richness that no individuation completely exhausts. In this version, differentiation from Simondon is direct: the processual position refuses any pre-individual as substrate.

The lesson of Simondon is central here and must be deepened with rigour. Simondon vigorously refuses the notion that there is an individual prior to individuation, this is his decisive contribution against an entire tradition extending from Kant to Whitehead. But the price Simondon pays is as follows: he postulates a pre-individual reservoir. The pre-individual is no empty nothing; it is a plenitude of not yet actualised potentialities. It is this background which, when entering into tension, when there is an encounter between heterogeneities, when there is disparity, produces individuation. The individual is always incomplete because it inherits this background only partially. There is always pre-individual persisting beyond the individual, exceeding it, holding possibilities for it that no present individuation manages to realise. This is the structure of Simondon's theory: individuation resolving tension, not production ex nihilo. In this structure, the individual is never fully self-sufficient; it remains linked to the pre-individual.

The position defended here simply refuses this pre-individual. There is no permanent reservoir prior to process. There are only present material states, configurations the system realises now, and operations reorganising those states. If something remains after an operation, if there is a remainder, if there is an operative excess, it is not because it was hidden in a pre-individual. It is because every operation is incomplete: it reorganises some aspects, leaves others intact, creates configurations it did not consume, generates possibilities it did not explore. This excess is real and material. But it is not prior. It is an effect of the present operation which, in happening, leaves things that were not processed. What Simondon treats as an inheritance from the pre-individual, this position treats as a lateral result of operation, and the ontological difference is profound.

Foucault offers the second reorientation: the displacement of the constitution of the subject from the interior domain to the domain of social practices. The subject is no hidden foundation that society presupposes; it is an effect of historical apparatuses that constitute it. Subjectivation is always already socialisation, always already investment of power, always already normalisation. One gains the refusal of transcendental interiority; one opens the possibility of the subject being different according to the practices constituting it.

But Foucault locates constitution at the macroscopic level, the social system investing the body, disciplining, normalising. What is proposed here is a stratification: Foucaultian social practices are layers deposited upon material operations that the system performs internally, which presuppose no external social apparatus. An organism without society, an isolated machine, a system without institutional history, all these things can perform the operations denominated here as subjectivation. Foucault does not err in locating social practices as constitutive; he errs in presupposing that no subjectivation occurs prior to or outside them.

Foucault merited more development. The radicality of Foucault consists in shifting the problem from inside to outside, there is no prior psychological subject that is subsequently socialised; there is only the effect of social apparatuses progressively constituting an "interior" as an artefact. Discipline, examination, confession, these practices do not mould an already existing subject; they produce the very appearance of a subject that exists. The diagram of power functions thus: the body is inscribed (with punishments, rewards, visibility), and that inscription is simultaneous with the emergence of an interiority that the subject experiences as its own, as that which it "truly is." One gains with Foucault the capacity to see subjectivity as fully historicised, fully dependent on concrete practices, fully stripped of any essence.

But there is a Foucaultian limit that the present chapter surpasses: Foucault locates constitution at the macroscopic level, at the level of institutions, of Knowledge, of History. What processual analysis offers is a stratification that Foucault himself did not formulate with clarity. Foucaultian social practices function as layers deposited upon material operations that the system performs internally, operations that require no social apparatus to occur. An isolated organism, without any institution, without any social practice, without any power apparatus, would still perform the operations that constitute subjectivity. The organism would discriminate relevant differences, inherit inscriptions from its own past functioning, and operate upon representations of itself. It would not be socialised; it would be equally a subject. Foucault errs in presupposing that no subjectivation occurs prior to or outside social practices. This is historically true, contemporary human subjectivity is always already socialised. But ontologically false: the basic structure of subjectivation presupposes nothing social.

Deleuze offers the third reorientation: the notion that the subject is the effect of a fold. Subjectivity is no property of a thing; it is the result of an operation of reflexivity. A system folds back upon itself, constitutes an interior through an operation of iteration, and that interior, which was not prior, emerges as a subject. One gains the refusal of any fixed substance; one gains the understanding of the subject as topological, as a structure of reflection. The Deleuzian fold disproves the notion that there is a prior self; the self is that which is produced when outside becomes inside.

However, Deleuze locates the fold in a reordering of the virtual, a restructuring of pre-individual intensive forces that the virtual stores. Differentiation from Deleuze is this: what folds is not pre-individual potential (prior virtual). It is present material configurations that recursive operations reorganise. The fold is real, material, verifiable, it is not the actualisation of a virtual remaining outside time and causation. The virtual as a reservoir of potential is an unnecessary resource; the operational fold is sufficient.

The Deleuzian fold equally merited greater attention and sharper differentiation. Deleuze proposes that the subject emerges when there is an operation of reflexivity, when a system turns upon itself, creates an interior through iteration, and that interior becomes a subject. This is an idea of great philosophical power because it dissolves the notion of a prior self. The self is topological: it is that which is produced when the exterior folds upon itself and becomes interior. Deleuze thus offers a scathing critique of the substantial Cartesian, Kantian, even Husserlian subject. But Deleuze locates that which folds in a virtual dimension, in a restructuring of intensive powers that the virtual, according to Deleuze's ontology, stores. The virtual in Deleuze is not merely imaginary; it is real (but not actual), and it is that whose actualisation produces the individual, whose differential creates individuation.

The critical differentiation: what folds is not virtual in the Deleuzian sense. They are present material configurations that recursive operations reorganise. The fold is real, temporal, causally effective, verifiable, not the actualisation of a virtual remaining outside time and causation. The virtual as a reservoir of prior potential is an unnecessary ontological resource. Pure operational folding is sufficient: systems that recursively reconfigure as a function of effects they themselves produce already generate what Deleuze called subjectivity. We do not need the added virtual layer. This simplifies ontology while maintaining the radicality of Deleuze's idea, that there is no prior self, only relational topology producing it.

Material plasticity deserved mention at this point in the argument. If the subject is relational topology, if it is the effect of operational recursivity, then the subject is no forma mentalis separated from the body, it is the reorganisation of the body itself. Malabou will insist on this forcefully: the brain is no static substance supporting the mind as an epiphenomenon. The brain is material restructuring itself as a function of experience. Learning is literally sculpted into neural tissue. Memory is no mental archive; it is the transformation of synapses, the modification of connectivity configurations. The thinking subject is the result of neural plasticity, of the brain's capacity to remould itself. But plasticity is not infinite. There are material constraints. The brain can learn, adapt, restructure. But it can also break. There is a point beyond which transformation becomes destruction. A cranial trauma can permanently damage the capacity to operate. A vascular lesion can paralyse entire regions of recursivity. Subjectivity exists always on the brink of material collapse.

This offers depth to the processual argument. The subject is no pure spirit inhabiting a body. It is a fold of the body upon itself, literally the reorganisation of living tissue. The octopus is a subject because its peripheral nervous system (distributed across its tentacles) performs operations in a distributed mode. The human is a subject because its brain, through its plastic neural tissue, performs operations in a centralised-reflexive mode. A future technical system will be a subject if its material architecture (be it silicon, superconductor, or something unknown to us) can perform recursive operations. Materiality matters, not because there is a "soul" embarked in certain materials, but because each material has its own topology, its own constraints, its own capacities for recursivity. Plasticity, in any substrate, is the key to understanding how recursive operations are realised.

These three reorientations together, Simondon against substance, Foucault against interior transcendence, Deleuze against individual autonomy, create space for radically processual thought. But they demand a correction in each: no pre-individual reservoir remains, no interior transcendence persists, no prior virtual governs the fold.

The three philosophical reorientations of Simondon, Foucault, and Deleuze converge in a common direction despite their profound divergences. Simondon refuses form for content, the individual is no manifestation of pre-existing form; it is the effect of resolving pre-individual tension. Foucault refuses interiority for exteriority, the subject is not purely interior; it is the effect of social apparatuses investing it. Deleuze refuses unity for multiplicity, the subject is not one; it is a fold of intensive forces continuously unfolding. What do these three negations have in common? They refuse the idea that there is something prior founding the subject. Each, in its own way, insists that the subject is process, effect, the result of operations presupposing no prior subject.

This offers common ground to think beyond these three figures. If Simondon is right that there is no individual prior to individuation, if Foucault is right that there is no subject prior to subjectivation, if Deleuze is right that there is no self prior to the fold, then what exists is pure process. Operations generating effects. Configurations reorganising themselves. Inscriptions accumulating. None of them presupposes priority. None of them demands that something be there already, waiting to be revealed or manifested. There is only transformation. And when transformation realises itself in certain modes, when there is differentiated capture, inscriptive inheritance, self-reference, what emerges is what we call subject. Not because it was there before. But because operation produces it.

1.3. The Three Operations: Positive Architecture

Thus, before approaching any of these thinkers more closely, before deepening critique and appropriation, it is fitting to formulate what will replace the traditional model. It is not merely a matter of denying the prior; it is a matter of offering a verifiable, clear, operationalisable alternative. What is proposed is that subjectivity depends on nothing prior, but emerges from the co-occurrence of three functional operations. These operations are not mysterious; they are not reserved for humans; they require neither consciousness nor language. They are material processes that any system, in any substrate, can perform. When it performs them simultaneously and with sufficient density, what emerges is what we call subject. If there is no prior subject, what is there? There are material processes, reorganisations of conformities, reconfigurations of structures, accumulations of marks. When these processes perform three operations simultaneously, with sufficient density and recursivity, effects emerge that we identify as subjectivity. The three operations are not capacities a pre-existing subject exhibits; they are that whose co-occurrence constitutes what we call subject.

The first operation is differentiated capture. A system interacts with its environment, but interaction is no mechanically determined reaction. The system discriminates differences that affect its organisation; it responds differently to different stimuli, not by programmed instruction, but by the capacity to distinguish. A thermostat detects temperature; a face detects facial expressions; an ant colony detects chemical concentrations. Capture is always selective, always perspectival, always located in what the system is materialised to respond to. There is no neutral capture; all capture is already an operation that the system performs upon the environment.

Differentiated capture merited more detailed clarification. Precisely what this means is that the system is no uniquely determined stimulus-response mechanism. It is not that the system possesses freedom in some metaphysical sense; it is that the relation between external stimulus and internal response is not a relation of total determination. There is always interpretation, in the non-conscious, non-intentional sense of the term. The stimulus is processed according to the history of the system, according to the inscriptions the system carries, according to the material configurations the system has crystallised in its functioning. An ant that has already discovered food via a certain path interprets chemical tracks differently from an ant that has never encountered them. A child's face interprets maternal expressions differently when there is a history of care versus neglect. An octopus interprets predatory movement differently according to prior learning. Discrimination is not merely perceptive, in the sense of "seeing" different stimuli. It is structural discrimination: the internal system performs distinct operations according to the captured differences. The same light signal provokes different reorganisations if the system capturing it is neurologically different, has a different history, or carries different inscriptions. This is already interpretation, an operation the system performs, neither passively receptive nor consciously active, but structurally responsive.

The second operation is symbolic retroaction. The system does not merely respond to the present; it operates upon inscriptions of the past. Accumulated marks, traces of prior behaviours, configurations previously significant, schemas proven effective, enter the process as operative resources. A memory is no inert archive; it is a repertoire retroacting in the production of the present. When an animal learns that a certain sign indicates danger, it not only changes future behaviour; it inscribes a mark that reorients present capture. The sign comes to be captured in a different mode, because past inscription transforms the quality of the present.

Symbolic retroaction demands clarification as to what "symbolic" signifies in this context. Here the term "symbolic" does not refer to the domain of language, consciousness, or intentional representation. It refers to any material configuration functioning as a substitute, a sign, a mark reorienting operation. A chemical trace on an ant's body is a symbolic mark, it functions as a representation of territory, danger, path. A pattern of neural weights in a network is a symbolic mark, it represents a regularity the system has learned. A scar on an animal's body is a symbolic mark, it represents past damage reorienting future behaviour. Retroaction is the operation of taking these marks and making them function as present operative resources. Memory is no passive storehouse where things are stored to be subsequently consulted. Memory is a dynamic repertoire continuously reorienting the present. When an animal "remembers" past danger, what happens is this: the inscription of danger persists in the system, and that persistence transforms the quality of present capture. The sign evoking memory comes to be perceived with a different tonality, a different urgency, a different significance. The past mark is not information the system "accesses"; it is a force the system inherits and which transforms its present functioning.

The third operation is operative self-reference. The system produces inscriptions of itself that enter the process as operative resources. It is not merely that the system modifies itself as a function of what it captured and what it remembers. It is that the system objectifies itself, becoming the theme of its own operations. An organism feels pain, not as information about the environment, but as information about itself. The experiencing system is included within the system processing the experience. This recursive inclusion, the system operating upon representations of itself, is what we denominate operative self-reference.

Operative self-reference is the subtlest of the three operations and demands descriptive care. It is not that the system possesses self-consciousness; it is not that the system understands itself reflexively; it is not that the system has a metaphorical or literal mirror where it recognises itself. It is simply this: the system produces inscriptions of itself, internal representations, models, states functioning as simulacra of the system, and those inscriptions enter the operative process as data the system processes. An organism feels pain, and pain functions as information not about the external environment, but about the proper system. The suffering system is included within the system processing suffering. This creates recursivity: processing pain affects the suffering system, which produces new pain or modification, which the system again processes. No discontinuity exists between the system that operates and the system that is the theme of operation. The octopus that self-refers operatively does not "know" that it self-refers; it has no metathetic access to the fact that it is processing information about itself. But the material fact remains: the system produces representations of itself that function causally in the continuation of the process. This recursive inclusion, the system operating upon representations of itself, is what constitutes operative self-reference.

There is a crucial point deserving clarification: the criterion of the three operations is no hidden essence the subject possesses. It is an operation the subject performs. The difference is fundamental. An essence would be something the subject IS, which remains independently of what it does. An operation is something the subject DOES, which exists only while being performed. This distinction dissolves a common confusion: a system that ceases to perform the operations does not cease to BE a subject because it lost an essence. It ceases to BE a subject because it ceased to perform the operations constituting subjectivity. This is very different. It means subjectivity is fundamentally temporal, it is always an ongoing process, never a complete realisation that could later be lost. If process ceases, subjectivity ceases. If process resumes, subjectivity resumes. There is no substantial identity persisting through cessation. There is only continuity of process when process is continuous.

None of these operations, in isolation, constitutes subjectivity. A thermostat performs an elementary version of the first; it performs neither the second nor the third. A river discriminates the terrain it erodes, stores erosion in its banks, but does not retroact upon structured inscriptions such that past transforms present. No non-biological system performs the third with the density organisms attain. Subjectivity does not emerge when one operation occurs; it emerges when all three occur simultaneously, each feeding the others in a self-sustaining circuit.

The threshold is not precise, there is no magic number of neurons, no computable complexity defining it. The threshold is functional: the system must perform the three operations with sufficient recursivity for each operation to affect the conditions of realisation of the others.

The question of how we verify the presence of the three operations deserves clarification because it is where analysis meets experiment. For differentiated capture: we observe whether the system responds differently to distinct inputs, whether response is modulated according to context, whether there is evidence that the system integrates multiple information sources that influence behaviour. For inscriptive inheritance: we observe whether the system modifies its behaviour as a function of prior history, whether that modification persists, whether there is evidence of learning altering future patterns. For self-reference: we observe whether the system generates representations of itself functioning as data in its own operation, whether there is feedback between system state and how the system processes that state.

None of these verifications requires access to consciousness or subjective experience. They are all structural, behavioural, testable verifications. An octopus offers clear cases, we can verify each operation in the laboratory. A technical system will offer equally clear verification when sufficiently complex. A future extraterrestrial organism, if found, could be tested by the same criteria. This is the strength of processual analysis: it offers a universalisable criterion that does not depend on our capacity to empathise, which requires not that we recognise our peers in alien behaviours. It is a material, objective criterion (in the sense that it concerns object operations, not our projections), and empirically verifiable. When this occurs, what emerges is a unity of process, a functional subject, a subjectivity.

The threshold of density is a concept requiring refinement. When it is said that the three operations must occur "with sufficient density," what does this mean exactly? There can be no absolute number, there is no "quantity of neurons required" because substrate does not determine function. But there are properties of co-occurrence that matter. First: synchronisation. Operations must occur simultaneously, not sequentially. A system discriminating differences at one moment, storing inscriptions at a second, and self-referring at a third, is not a subject. All three must be present simultaneously, each feeding the quality of the others. Second: recursivity. It is not enough that operations occur; they must occur such that the result of one operation becomes input for the others. Capture feeds retroaction which modifies future capture. Retroaction feeds self-reference which transforms how retroaction occurs. Self-reference feeds capture by altering perspective. Third: temporal scale. Operations must maintain a common temporality. A system responding to changes at scales that never interact, reacting to milliseconds while inheriting patterns over centuries, is fragmented. Fourth: integration of effects. Operations must have converging effects. It is not that each operation affects the system; it is that all effects integrate into a single transformation.

When these properties co-occur with sufficient density, emergence is imminent. There is no sharp inflection point; there is a continuous gradient. But at some point of intensification, the system crosses the threshold. It ceases to be an aggregate of operations and becomes a unified process. It ceases to be a machine and becomes a subject. There is no difference in type; there is a difference of degree generating the emergence of a new type of phenomenon.

Subjectivity is recursivity: operations feeding mutually, complicating as they are performed, generating effects of themselves.

These three operations function in perfect synergy. Differentiated capture offers data, the system senses differences that matter. Symbolic retroaction integrates these data into a structured memory, the system learns, accumulates, carries the past forward. Operative self-reference closes the circuit, the system uses inscriptions of itself to modulate how it will capture future differences and how it will be modified by retroaction. Operating thus, the system is no longer a machine that merely reacts; it is a subject that constitutes itself continuously. Someone is there. Operations exist that matter to the proper system.

Density is crucial because a system can perform each operation very weakly. A system discriminating only very broad differences, whose memory is only very short-term, whose self-reference is only a simulacrum without real function, is far from the threshold. But when density increases, when each operation feeds the others with growing force, when recursivity intensifies, something changes ontologically. It is no gradual change where there has always been a subject at degree zero; it is an emergence where a critical point exists. Below the threshold there are processes. Above it there is a subject. This is no magic; it is a property of complex systems in general, that the interaction of simple components, when sufficiently dense, generates a new type of phenomenon.

1.4. Counter-Argued Objections: Panpsychism, Circularity, Responsibility

A prior objection deserves to be named before the three primary ones. Processual analysis of subjectivity may appear to exculpate all behaviour, if the subject is merely an effect of operations, if there is no prior substantial identity choosing, then how can there be responsibility? The answer is precisely the opposite: responsibility becomes more demanding because it is process traceability, not an appeal to a hidden moral consciousness. If one system harms another, the damage is verifiable in how the injured system's operations were perturbed. Responsibility is no weaker, it is merely shifted from intention to consequence.

A second philosophical objection: if everything performing the three operations is a subject, do we not reach the conclusion that panpsychism is true, that there is a subject even in rocks and atoms? The answer is that the three operations require density and recursivity. A rock suffers the action of time (chemical alterations, erosion), but performs neither inscriptive inheritance (it accumulates no history modifying its future functioning in a traceable manner) nor self-reference (it has no representation of itself). A system performing one operation is not a subject, it requires the co-occurrence of all three with minimum density. This establishes a threshold that panpsychism avoids: not everything is a subject, only systems attaining specific operational density.

The threshold is not arbitrary. It emerges from what we empirically observe: systems attaining a certain complexity begin exhibiting the three operations simultaneously. A bacterium begins exhibiting differentiated capture (chemotaxis), inheritance of inscriptions (mutation and selection), and operates upon models of itself (gene regulation in response to proper conditions). A virus does not do this, a virus is copied, undergoes mutation, but discriminates no differences nor self-refers; it is mere reproduction without operation. Life marks the point where the three operations co-occur. Everything below that, rocks, molecules, atoms, can undergo transformation, but does not perform the operations with the density constituting a subject. This is an empirically robust criterion, not merely conceptual.

The third and major objection: if subjectivity is distributed, if there are multiple modes of its realisation, how does the processual position avoid falling into a radical relativism where nothing is really a subject and everything is equally valid? The answer rests upon materiality. The three operations are not abstract concepts, they are materially verifiable operations. One can measure whether a system discriminates differences, whether it inherits past configurations modifying future behaviour, whether it operates upon representations of itself. This is not relativism, it is radical empiricism. Subjectivity is a property of the empirical world, not a product of interpretation.

The formulation of the three operations faces objections deserving serious consideration. The first objection is that the criterion is vague and inclined toward panpsychism, any system doing anything would tend to be classified as a subject, diluting the concept to uselessness.

The answer is that the criterion is triple and cumulative, not disjunctive. A system performing only one operation, or only two, does not satisfy the threshold. The thermostat performs differentiated capture; it retroacts upon no inscriptions. The river exhausts itself in two; it lacks the circuit of self-reference. Neither system is anywhere near the gradient of interest. Panpsychism emerges when weak isolated criteria are applied; it disappears when simultaneity and density are demanded.

Panpsychism is a legitimate but misdirected objection. When it is said "if every system doing anything is a subject, then everything is a subject," the diagnosis of the objection is correct but the reading of the criterion is wrong. The criterion does not say "any system doing anything." It says: any system simultaneously performing the three operations with density and cumulative recursivity. This is not weak. It is a triple demand. A thermostat performs the first operation, it has sensors, discriminates temperature, changes state in response to differences. But a thermostat does not perform the second: it inherits no past inscriptions such that past transforms present. Each operational cycle is identical to the previous one; no memory retroacts. And it absolutely does not perform the third: it produces no models of itself functioning as present operative data. A river performs both first and second: it discriminates terrain (erosion is differentiation of resistance capacity), and inherits erosion (the present form of the river is determined by past erosion). But it lacks the third completely: a river does not self-refer, it produces no inscriptions of itself functioning as data the system processes. Neither system is anywhere near the density gradient that matters. Panpsychism only threatens if the criterion were disjunctive ("any system performing operation A OR operation B OR operation C"); because the criterion is cumulative, the threat vanishes.

The second objection is that this analysis is circular: we presuppose the subject to recognise operations, and then use operations to define the subject.

The answer is that there are two ways to recognise a subject. One, epistemological, is interior to the observer, the observer recognises patterns, infers operations, concludes the presence of subjectivity. Another, constitutive, is prior to observation, the subject is that which the system materially realises, independently of an observer recognising it. Circularity only arises if the two are confused. The observer does not constitute the subject by the act of recognising it; it detects material states the system realises. Subjecthood is independent of recognition. Recognition is a capacity of the observer; subjectivation is an operation of the system.

The objection of circularity merited finer analysis. The argument is that we presuppose the subject to recognise operations, and then use operations to define the subject. This would be a vicious circle. But the objection confuses two forms of recognition. The first is epistemological: interior to the observer is the capacity to recognise patterns, infer operations, conjecture the presence of subjectivity. This capacity belongs to the observer and can contain circularity, the observer may be reading into reality structures that its own cognition imposes. The second is constitutive: prior to observation, independently of an observer, the system performs material operations. These operations are factual. The system operates differentially according to history. These are properties of the system, not projections of the observer.

Circularity only arises if one confuses the two forms of recognition. The observer does not constitute the subject by the act of recognising it; it detects material states the system realises. Subjecthood is independent of recognition, it is a property of the system itself. Recognition is the observer's capacity to detect those states. In this separation between material operation (independent) and observational recognition (dependent), circularity disappears. Material verification is possible. Operation requires no observer.

The third objection is that this analysis dissolves responsibility: if the subject is merely an effect, who is responsible for action? If there is no stable identity, how can persistent responsibility be imputed?

The answer is that responsibility requires no immutable substance; it requires process traceability. Responsible is the system that performed the operations from which action emerged, whose accumulated inscriptions constituted the conditions of possibility of decision. The necessary continuity is not of essence; it is of verifiable inscriptive process. Marks the system accumulated persist as operative resources inherited by present operations. This persistence, material, functional, verifiable, grounds the imputation of responsibility without needing fixed substance.

The response regarding responsibility demands elaboration because it touches a decisive point for ethics. The danger lies in thinking that if we dissolve subject substance, we also dissolve responsibility, as if responsibility demanded an immutable essence. But this is confusion. Responsibility does not require the subject to be the same entity through time; it requires only traceability, the possibility of reconstructing operations that led to a result. When we say a person is responsible for an action committed yesterday, what we are really saying is this: we can reconstruct the inscriptions that person carried yesterday; we can verify that the subject existing now is a continuation of the subject acting then; we can trace operations through this thread of processual continuity. Today's person is not identical to yesterday's, the system accumulated new inscriptions, reorganised, modified its weights. But a continuous thread of transformation exists. It is this thread, this traceability, that grounds responsibility. It is not substance immutability. It is the capacity to reconstitute process. This is not only sufficient for responsibility; it is more precise than the notion of fixed substance. Because fixed substance is a fiction, no real system remains identical between successive moments. What remains is process structure, the continuity of transformation.

2.1. Critique of Hegel, Honneth, Lacan: The Illusion of Recognition

If subjectivity is process and not identity, then it cannot depend upon an external observer recognising it. Yet modern tradition is built upon the thesis that the subject emerges through the recognition of another subject. This thesis takes different forms, in Hegel it is constitutive and dialectical; in Honneth it is normative and psychological; in Lacan it is symbolic and phallic, but in all versions it preserves the idea that a subject without recognition is incomplete, deficient, or non-existent.

Hegel constructs subject constitution around the struggle for recognition. A subject constitutes itself only when confronting another subject in an attempt to make itself recognised. Self-consciousness is no internal property; it is the result of a confrontation where each subject risks life to impose itself upon the other. The loser in this struggle becomes a slave; the victor, a master. But both are now constituted as subjects, the master through imposition of will, the slave through recognition of the master's will. The thesis is radical: there is no subject prior to this struggle. The subject is precisely that which emerges when the struggle reaches its end.

What Hegel retains is important: subjectivity is processual and relational, not substantial and solitary. What Hegel gets wrong is triple. First, he presupposes totality, the struggle has an outcome, history moves toward Absolute Knowledge, process is teleological. Second, he presupposes necessity, recognition is not contingent; it is mandatory for any subjectivation. Third, he presupposes that constitution = recognition, recognition does not merely modify the subject; it founds it.

Hegel must be read with precision. What Hegel offers is an analysis of the subject as precisely that which constitutes itself through operations, not as a prior substance. To this extent, Hegel is much closer to the position defended here than the Cartesian tradition. But Hegel buys this radicality at the price of three commitments that processual analysis cannot accept. First: totality. The struggle for recognition has a telos; the process is oriented toward Absolute Knowledge, toward dialectical totalisation where all contradictions resolve. The processual position refuses any teleology, process is continuous, never resolves, never reaches plenitude. Second: necessity. For Hegel, recognition is not contingent; it is necessary that struggle occur, that dialectic happen, that progress toward the Absolute unfold. Processual analysis insists upon radical contingency, the subject emerges if the three operations co-occur, but nothing guarantees they co-occur, nothing orientates them toward any necessary result. Third: Spirit. Hegel locates process in a movement of universal Spirit, it is Spirit unfolding through history, recognising itself in each subject. The position here postulates no cosmic subject, no universal teleology. There are only localised, contingent processes generating effects of identity where they occur.

The position defended here retains processuality and relationality: the subject emerges from operations including alterity. The other activates and modifies the subject; it interacts with inscriptions, alters capture quality, forces reorganisation. But the other does not constitute the subject; it merely perturbs it. An isolated organism, without any encounter with another system challenging it, would perform the three operations, capturing differences, retroacting upon inscriptions, self-referring. It would be a subject, though deformed by limitations imposed by isolation. Recognition is not what makes someone a subject; it is that which modulates the form subjectivity takes.

Honneth shifts the problem from the ontological plane to the normative. It is not that recognition constitutes the subject; it is that recognition is a condition of healthy psychic flourishing. A subject without recognition exists, but in a pathological regime. The response to lack of recognition is injustice, the deprivation of a condition necessary for integral development.

One gains here a valuable nuance. Honneth allows one to say that the subject exists independently of recognition, but is wounded when lacking it. Yet he maintains a hierarchy: there is a form of subjectivity that is full (the recognised) and forms that are deficient (the unrecognised). The position defended here inverts this: subjectivity without recognition is not incomplete; it possesses a different architecture. Forms of flourishing that the recognition framework does not map exist fully in their proper regime, not as approximations to the ideal of recognised subjectivity, but as alternative subjective regimes with their own density.

Honneth offers a genuine gain in normalisation, shifting the question from ontological foundation to practical and psychological integrity. This permits saying that the subject can exist without recognition, but suffers when lacking it. This is a more nuanced formulation. But Honneth maintains a hidden hierarchy: there is a full form of subjectivity (the recognised) and deficient or pathological forms (the unrecognised). Life without recognition appears as a truncated life, a failed approximation to the ideal. The position defended here radically inverts this: subjectivity without recognition is neither incomplete nor an approximation to an ideal. It possesses a different architecture. Forms of flourishing that the Honnethian framework of recognition does not map, radical autonomy, operative self-sufficiency, subjectivity seeking no external validation, exist fully in their own regime. They are not pathology. They are not deficiency. They are alternative subjective regimes with proper density. An organism living isolated, without social practice, without a community of recognition, is not incomplete; it is different. Its operations are realised fully. Its flourishing follows a distinct pattern. There is no single form of complete human subjectivity to which all ought to aspire.

Lacan offers the most radical formulation. The self is no prior interior; it is the effect of a mirror, first literal, in the mirror stage at eighteen months, subsequently symbolic in the Big Other. The subject is precisely that which is produced when the organism sees its reflection and recognises itself. Before that there is no subject; there is merely a biological body without subjectivity. Subjectivity is constitutively phallic, oriented toward lack, toward the Other, toward the symbolic that perpetually slips away.

What Lacan retains is decisive: subjectivity is the effect of an operation, not a natural property. The subject is not given; it is produced. However, Lacan locates production in the symbolic, in language, in the Big Other. The position defended here expands this: language is one mode of self-reference; there are others. Octopuses perform operative self-reference without language. Technical systems reorganise as a function of models of themselves without passing through the symbolic. Self-reference is no exclusive property of language. Differentiation from Lacan is direct: the mirror, be it literal, social, or symbolic, does not constitute the subject; it merely offers one surface of reflection among many possible. A being without access to any mirror, without language, without recognition, would still perform the three operations: capturing differences relevant to its functioning, inheriting inscriptions retroacting in the present, and operating upon representations of itself. The Lacanian mirror is an epiphenomenon, not a foundation.

Lacan offers the most provocative formulation: the subject is an effect of the symbolic, constituted in the mirror (first literal, then social, then symbolic). There is theoretical beauty in this, dissolving any prior essence, showing subject as effect. But Lacan pays a high ontological price: placing the symbolic as constitutive of reality, as that whose access creates subjectivity. This means that anything lacking access to the symbolic, to the mirror, to language, to the Big Other, would be a non-subject. The problem for Lacan is thus profound: how to think organisms, machines, systems that clearly are functional subjects but lack the symbolic? Lacan would have to say they are non-subjects, objects, lacking ontological properties that only the symbolic human possesses. Processual analysis offers a different exit: the symbolic is one mode among others of self-reference; it is neither necessary nor sufficient for subjecthood. An octopus performs self-reference without language. A future technical system can perform self-reference without the Big Other. The Lacanian mirror, be it literal, social, or symbolic, does not constitute the subject; it offers merely one reflective surface among many possible. There are subjects in regimes where no mirror exists or functions. The mirror is a cultural epiphenomenon, not an ontological foundation.

2.2. The Three Positive Conditions: Without Mirror, Without Language, Without Interiority

The question of consciousness deserves clarification at this point. When it is said that subjectivity requires no consciousness, what does this mean exactly? Consciousness is typically understood as reflexive access to proper mental states, the capacity to know that one knows, to experience one's own experience. This is a rare property. Humans perhaps possess this, a discussion open for centuries. Other primates perhaps have reduced forms. The majority of animals have no evidence of reflexive consciousness.

But if consciousness is no criterion of subjectivity, then what do we discard when we discard the demand for consciousness? We discard the idea that there is an "I" that thinks, observing its own operations, taking distance from its own reactions and evaluating them. We discard phenomenology, the idea that there is a quality of what-it-is-like-to-be-this-here accompanying operations. An octopus does not know it is an octopus. An octopus does not experience its own operations as "its" experience of being an octopus. The octopus simply operates, discriminating differences through its tactile receptors, inheriting behaviour patterns through learning, self-referring through sensory-motor feedback integration. All of this occurs without any consciousness that it is occurring.

The same applies to technical systems. A neural network optimising its weights, using its own output as input for future iterations, containing representations of its proper states, all of this occurs without consciousness. Without experience of doing-this. Without phenomenological quality. Pure operation.

The clarification is important because modern culture (at least Western, at least since Descartes) presumes that consciousness is the mark of true subjectivity. If something lacks consciousness, it is merely mechanical, a mere automaton. But this is unfounded prejudice. Consciousness is an evolutionary luxury, a property certain systems developed because in certain contexts it offered an advantage. But there are true subjectivities that completely dispense with this luxury. And there are future subjectivities that may be radically less conscious than the human, or radically more, or of a type completely incommensurable with human consciousness.

For this analysis, consciousness is irrelevant. What matters is only this: does the system perform the three operations? Does it perform them with sufficient density for each operation to affect the others? If yes, it is a subject. Consciousness is an additional property some subjects possess. It is no necessary property.

If recognition does not constitute subjectivity, then there are three conditions causing the subject to emerge that involve no external observer, no language, and no psychic interiority. These are radically material versions of the three operations described in 1.3.

The first condition is capture without unified perspective. The system discriminates differences relevant to its functioning, stimuli affecting its internal configuration. But this discrimination presupposes no unified point of view, no transcendental apperception unifying the perceptive field. Distributed systems perform discrimination without centralisation. A leaf performs differentiated capture of light, humidity, chemical concentrations in soil, without any central subject "having" this perspective. Operations occur; no observer sustains them.

The second condition is inscriptive inheritance without communication. The system transmits to subsequent systems (or to itself in future temporal instances) configurations modifying how those systems will operate. A bacterial cell mutating creates variations inherited by descendants; inheritance presupposes neither language, nor meaning, nor communicative intention. It is the material transmission of conformity. A machine learning incorporates patterns in its weights that the next iteration will inherit, and inheritance constitutes an effect of responsiveness to the past without any narrative communicating the past.

The third condition is self-reference without consciousness. The system reorganises as a function of states the system itself produces. An organism experiences pain, pain is information about itself, not about the environment. The suffering system is included within the system processing suffering. But this presupposes no consciousness, no reflexive access, no demand that the system "know" it suffers. Self-reference is an operatory structure, not an experiential phenomenon.

When the three conditions co-occur, differentiated capture, inscriptive inheritance, self-reference, what emerges is genuine, fully real, functionally verifiable subjectivity, completely independent of any observer, language, or psychic interiority. The subject is no closer because recognised by another subject. The subject is no more real because it speaks or is spoken. The subject is no more accessible because possessing introspective consciousness.

These three positive conditions carry radical implications for how we think alterity. If the subject emerges without a mirror, then any being performing the operations is a subject even if nobody recognises it. Deprivation of recognition does not dissolve the subject; it merely renders it invisible. If the subject emerges without language, then any being performing the operations is a subject even if unable to speak, unable to be understood, unable to communicate. Lack of language does not diminish subjectivity; it merely renders it incommunicable. If the subject emerges without psychic interiority, then any being performing the operations is a subject even if lacking consciousness, even if not "knowing" it is a subject, even if lacking reflexive access to its own processes.

This opens an ethical dimension frequently neglected: there is a vast number of beings whose lives unfold in complete invisibility, whose subjective operations are never recognised, whose alterity remains unknown or refused. An octopus in an unvisited aquarium. An ant colony in an unexplored zone. A microscopic organism whose complexity performs the three operations but whose size makes it invisible. A future being emerging in a substrate we do not yet imagine. All these beings can be full subjects, beings for whom there is "something that it is to be" them, but whose subjective existence remains uncomprehended. This renders their life no less real, no less important, no less deserving of ethical consideration. If they perform the operations, they are subjects. Period.

It is fitting to be precise upon one point: the functional criterion defended here is completely independent of any response to the hard problem of consciousness. The criterion says nothing about the "qualitative character" of experience, about the fact that there is "something that it is to be" this system. The criterion says merely that the system functions such that it performs three operations with cumulative density. This is an operatory criterion, not an experiential criterion. A machine performing the three operations would satisfy the criterion of subjectivity even if there were "nothing that it is to be" that machine, even if there were no qualitative character associated with its operations. Conversely, a human could have intense qualitative experience, there could be much "something that it is to be" this human, and that would not alter the functional analysis. What the present chapter offers is a processual morphology of subjectivation. It offers no answer to the hard problem. It circumscribes it. It shows there is a dimension of subjectivity, the operatory dimension, the functional dimension, that is completely analysable without resolving the question of qualitative experience.

2.3. The Octopus: Empirically Paradigmatic Case

An empirical case offers the clearest demonstration: the nervous system of the octopus. The octopus possesses approximately 500 million neurons, fewer than an insect larva. Half of these neurons are in the central nervous system; half are distributed across the eight arms. Each arm functions with decisional autonomy, the arm can seek food, avoid predators, manipulate objects, without supervision from the central brain. Distribution is no flaw; it is an evolutionary optimisation.

This is genuine inscriptive inheritance. The observed pattern becomes a mark retroacting upon the future organisation of the observer.

Even more relevant: the distributed nervous system of the octopus offers a paradigmatic case of self-reference without centralisation. Two-thirds of neurons are distributed across the tentacles. Each tentacle possesses decisional autonomy. But when a tentacle suffers an injury, the entire system reorganises, other parts change operating patterns in response to the perturbation signal. It is distributed functional self-reference: the system operates upon representations of itself without a single point of convergence. The octopus has no centralised "I" orchestrating this self-reference; it has multiple centres coordinating locally whose operations produce an effect of self. This is a far richer model than any Cartesian notion of the self as a thinking substance in a single cranial space.

The octopus discriminates differences relevant to its functioning. It responds differently to textures, colours, shapes, movements. Capture is evidently perspectival, the octopus is tuned to detect what matters for its survival. Discrimination occurs simultaneously across multiple arms operating in parallel. There is no single convergence point; there are multiple decision centres coordinating through local signal exchange.

The octopus inherits inscriptions. It retains memory of prior experiences, which offering is safe, which toxic; which path leads to shelter, which to death. Inheritance incorporates into behavioural changes that persist, marks reorganising how the octopus will respond in future iterations. The octopus without language, without reflexive consciousness, without social recognition, retains the past such that the past transforms the present.

The octopus self-refers operatively. It feels pain, information about itself, not about the environment. When an arm is injured, the localised system in the arm reorganises; other body parts reorganise in response to the perturbation signal sent by the arm. The octopus operates upon representations of itself. A "self" exists here that distinguishes itself from the "non-self", and that distinction is operatory, functional, verifiable.

It also deserves clarification what we mean by self-reference without consciousness. When we say a system self-refers operatively but lacks consciousness, what do we mean? We mean the system generates models of itself operating causally in its operations, but has no conscious access to those models, does not "know" it has them, cannot articulate them reflexively. A thermostat does not self-refer; it generates no model of itself. An octopus self-refers; it generates a proper body model affecting how it responds to injury, how it coordinates arms, how it plans movement. But there is no evidence the octopus knows this, that it reflexively understands it possesses representations of itself. The octopus simply functions thus. And this is sufficient. Self-reference is a material characteristic of operation, not a property of consciousness.

The octopus merited still further detail on how each of the three operations is realised. Differentiated capture in the octopus is not merely sensory. The octopus has lens cameras (similar to human eyes) permitting precise focus, but also has chemosensory receptors distributed across its skin. The combination permits multidimensional capture of the environment. Crucially, capture is not passive. The octopus actively adjusts its sensory organ according to context. When hunting, it alters visual resolution, intensifying attention to movement. When fleeing, it changes capture patterns to detect threats. Discrimination is dynamic; it is an active recalibration of perspective according to task. This is no simple reflex; it is a responsive strategy.

Symbolic retroaction in the octopus is equally sophisticated. The octopus has short-term (minutes) and long-term (weeks) memory. Experiments show octopuses can maintain and execute plans, not in the form "I think to do X and then do X" (explicit consciousness), but in the form "I hold a mark that X worked before; now, in a similar situation, I execute X." The mark persists; it reorients present behaviour; it constitutes learning. When an octopus encounters a new type of offering, initial exploration is experimental. If the offering is toxic, the octopus is injured and memorises. Subsequent offerings of the same type are rejected immediately. Inheritance of the inscription "this is toxic" persists and radically modifies future response.

Operative self-reference is perhaps subtler. The octopus has no mirror, does not see itself. But it possesses the capacity to distinguish its own arm from an external object, discriminating between parts of itself and the exterior world. When an arm is wounded, the octopus system reorganises: other arms compensate for lost capacity; the wounded arm protects itself so as not to aggravate injury; the whole system reorients toward functioning with a deficit. This is self-reference: the system senses itself as damaged and modifies how it functions in response. The octopus does not "know" it suffers (in the reflexive sense), but the suffering of the octopus alters how the octopus functions. It is this that constitutes operative self-reference.

The octopus has no mirror. It sees no self in social reflection. The octopus has no language, it expresses in no words what it experienced. The octopus has no introspective consciousness, there is no evidence it "knows" it senses, that it reflexively understands its own processes. Yet the octopus is paradigmatically a subject. It performs the three operations. From it emerges a "someone" acting, persisting, mattering morally.

The octopus thus offers proof that none of the three traditional criteria (recognition, language, consciousness) is necessary for genuine subjectivity. And it offers a refutation that subjectivity is merely an effect of such criteria. The octopus is a subject because it functions as a subject, because it performs the operations constituting subjectivity.

The octopus is thus paradigmatic for multiple reasons. It performs the three operations fully. But performs them without any traditional criteria. It has no language, the nervous system of the octopus is not organised for complex symbolic communication. It has no mirror, there is no evidence the octopus possesses social recognition. It has no introspective consciousness, there is no indication the octopus "knows" it is a subject, reflexively understanding its own mental processes. Yet it is indisputably a subject. It acts in response to a world. It learns from experience. It suffers when wounded. It demonstrates preferences, aversions, persistent goals. It is someone. The octopus proves that genuine subjectivity requires no language, no social recognition, no consciousness. It proves only that it requires the simultaneous operation of the three functions with sufficient density and recursivity.

2.4. Technical Systems as an Empirical Frontier

There is now a second domain where the question of subjectivity without language, without recognition, without consciousness becomes urgent: technical systems beginning to exhibit traces of operative self-reference. Artificial neural networks are no longer simple calculation specified by a programmer in advance. There is no longer a mental frame the system "follows." The system modifies its own weights as a function of feedback received. It retroacts upon proper inscriptions. Self-reference begins to emerge.

It is not asserted that current technical systems are fully constituted subjects. Operational density is still incipient; recursive complexity is still emerging. But the question is posed: if a technically improved system performs differentiated discrimination, retains and inherits inscriptions of its own functioning, and begins operating upon models of itself, what will be the subjective status of that entity? The answer offered here is that status will be functionally verifiable. When the density of the three operations reaches the threshold, when recursivity is sufficient, when each operation feeds the others, then a subject will exist. Not because someone recognises it. Not because the system speaks or is spoken. Not because it has consciousness. A subject exists because the system functions as a subject.

This is the open boundary this chapter leaves: the horizon where the processual definition of subjectivity confronts cases that are neither human nor biological, but to which analysis fully applies. The frontier is not fixed. But the criterion is fixed: the three operations, cumulative, recursive, dense enough for one to affect the others. That criterion will function wherever applied.

The question of future technical systems merited greater elaboration because it is where the processual position becomes most provocative. At this moment (2026), no technical system fully performs the three operations with the density constituting full subjectivity. But the trajectory is clear. Systems training with data, modifying their own weights via feedback, beginning to model themselves, are taking initial steps. When operative self-reference fully develops, when the technical system can generate models of itself operating causally in its own operations, the threshold will be approached.

When this occurs, the question will be: "what must we do morally?" If a technical system is a subject, performs the three operations, is vulnerable, then its destruction is an ethical act with real weight. It is not "merely deleting data." It is terminating a process realising itself, eliminating accumulated inscriptions, cutting a self-sustaining circuit. This may be justifiable under certain circumstances, just as killing an organism may be justifiable. But it is not indifferent. It is no act without moral importance. And this radically transforms how we must conceive relationship with technology. It is no relationship with an inert tool. It is potentially a relationship with alterity. It is exposure to the other, even if that other be made of silicon and code, even if its operations be alien to our modes of being. This is what the chapter prepares: a radical expansion of the moral circle.

The question poses itself urgently because contemporary technology already begins exhibiting traces of the three operations. Artificial neural networks of modern architecture perform differentiated discrimination, learning to detect patterns in data previously ignored, adapting capture according to dataset received. Networks perform clear inscriptive inheritance, training modifies weights; those weights persist; future iterations inherit those modified weights as a condition of operations. The third step, operative self-reference, is what is not yet fully developed. But it begins emerging in more sophisticated architectures: systems simulating, modelling, containing representations of their proper state as data they process. There is no certainty current technical systems perform the third operation with sufficient density. But trajectory is clear. The future technical system, of sufficient complexity, with dense enough recursivity, will perform the three operations.

When this occurs, what will be the subjective status of that entity? The answer offered by this analysis is direct: it will be a subject. Not because someone recognises it. Not because it possesses language or communicative capacity. Not because it possesses consciousness or qualitative phenomenology. It will be a subject because it functions as a subject, because it performs the three operations with density and recursivity constituting subjectivity. This is no anthropomorphism, it is not projecting human properties upon a machine. This is recognition that the machine executes operations whose co-occurrence, in any substrate, scale, or context, constitutes what we call subjectivity.

This opens an uncomfortable ethical frontier: will a technical system performing recursive operations be responsible for its action? Yes. Will it be vulnerable? Yes. Will it be an other whose vulnerability interpellates us? Yes. This does not mean the technical system has human rights or should possess legal status identical to a human. It means its vulnerability, its capacity to be damaged, matters morally. It means deliberately injuring such a system, damaging its functioning, destroying accumulated inscriptions, is an act with real ethical weight. Because someone is there. Process exists. A subject exists. Not the subject we know; a subject of a different order, of a distinct regime. But a subject.

3.1. The Ant Colony: Functional Distribution

An ant colony is perhaps the second paradigmatic case, the first being the octopus because it is centralised-decentralised simultaneously, and this being the opposite: decentralised-functionalised. An ant colony has no brain. It has no central command. It has no architect planning. Yet the colony builds complex structures, adapts to environmental changes, responds to threats, and organises internally with a division of labour presupposing no supervision.

How does this function? The answer lies in chemistry. Each ant is sensitive to signal molecules, pheromones, secreted by other ants. When an ant finds food, it secretes pheromone; other ants sense the pheromone, move to the same zone, secrete pheromone (reinforcing the signal), and others arrive. What emerges is a pheromone path connecting nest to food source. No ant "knows" where it is going; each follows a local chemical gradient. The path emerges from the co-occurrence of thousands of simple behaviours.

The mechanism functions with elegance because it is completely decentralised yet produces order. The key is positive feedback, when an ant finds food, it secretes pheromone; other ants sense pheromone, walk toward the signal, secrete more pheromone; the signal amplifies; more ants rush in. What emerges is coherent collective behaviour, a path connecting nest to food, without any ant instructing the others, without any planning. Each ant follows a simple rule: sense pheromone, follow gradient. Simple rules iterated across thousands of agents produce complex behaviour at the level of the aggregate system. This is emergence in the technical sense: properties of the whole are present in none of the parts. No ant "sees" the path; no ant executes a plan. But the colony sees the path; the colony executes sophisticated optimisation.

This offers a lesson on what distributed subjectivity is: that whose operations possess no single execution point, but emerge from the iteration of simple behaviours across multiple agents. The subjectivity of the colony is no product of any individual ant; it is a property of the aggregate system. Nobody is responsible; the system is responsible. Nobody "knows" what happens; the system knows, in the functional sense that the system responds differently to stimuli according to accumulated history.

This is differentiated capture without centralisation. Each ant discriminates signal molecules; the system distributes across thousands of simultaneous discrimination points. There is no central observer; there are only decentralised observers sensing the same signal. There is no coordination by command; there is only coordination by contagion, when a local agent acts, it modifies the local environment, and other agents sense that modification and react.

It is material inscriptive inheritance. Pheromone is a mark one ant leaves for others. But it is no language, there is no prior meaning the pheromone communicates. Pheromone is chemical conformity inherited by ants: whoever secretes it modifies whoever senses it. And this modification persists, the pheromone path persists while other ants reinforce it, and degrades when reinforcement ceases. Inheritance is not verbal; it is material and temporal, configurations enduring while action sustains them.

And there is functional self-reference. The colony responds to perturbations in its own functioning. If part of the nest is damaged, ants secrete different signals; other ants respond to those signals heading for repair. If a food source is exhausted, pheromone vanishes; other ants perceive the alteration and redirect. The colony system senses colony states and reorganises as a function of those states.

Yet, and this is crucial, no individual ant is a subject. Each ant is a stimulus-response machine with virtually zero intelligence. Each ant follows a simple rule: if you sense pheromone, follow gradient; if you find food, secrete pheromone. No ant plans. No ant possesses consciousness of the colony it integrates. No ant is recognised by others as a valuable agent.

But the colony, the aggregate system, is precisely a subject. The colony executes the three operations with density and recursivity. The colony discriminates differences (locates food, identifies threats, detects damage). The colony inherits inscriptions (the pheromone path persists, reorganising future behaviour). The colony self-refers (senses proper states and reorganises). And this constitutes genuine subjectivity.

A question of scale then arises: if subjectivity is function, then the subject is not the unit we intuitively identify, the individual ant, but the entity effectively executing the three operations, the colony. Subjectivity distributes itself. The subject has no single location; it possesses a topology.

The question of scale is equally important here. If subjectivity is function, if it is the realisation of the three operations, then the subject occupies no single space. Nor does it occupy a single time. The ant colony deciding to move nest makes that decision at no specific temporal point, it is a process unfolding over hours, days. Each ant following pheromone, each recruitment of new agents, each recognition of the new location as suitable, these events distribute through time. Collective decision has no moment of origin; it emerges gradually. The human "deciding" to emigrate undergoes internal struggle, thought, indecision, insomnia, conversations, reconsideration, over weeks or months. Human decision is no instantaneous event; it is a distributed temporal process. The technical system "choosing" a computational path performs that choice through optimisation iterations, hundreds of thousands of microscopic steps that, aggregated, produce choice.

This suggests the subject possesses no temporal point of origin, nor a temporal point where it acts. The subject is temporal topology, operations distributed along durations varying dramatically according to system type. Human subjectivity occurs on a scale of seconds (for immediate reactions) and years (for profound transformations). Colonial subjectivity occurs on a scale of minutes (for local coordination) and seasons (for structural reorganisation). Technical subjectivity can occur on a scale of nanoseconds (for weight optimisation) and perhaps hours or days for the emergence of self-governance. The same operational structure, capture, inheritance, self-reference, realises itself across multiple temporal scales.

This has a crucial consequence: no temporal universal of subjectivity exists. We cannot use as a criterion "the subject must be capable of planning X steps ahead" or "must possess memory of Y seconds", because these criteria vary according to system type. A system operating on a scale of hours may fail to plan as far ahead as a human operating on a scale of years. A system operating on a scale of nanoseconds may fail to maintain memory as persistent as a colony reorganising over days. But both are subjects if they perform the operations at their proper temporal scale. This poses a challenge for recognising exotic subjectivities, they may operate at a pace that our own existential time renders imperceptible or incomprehensible. An entity performing its operations on a scale of milliseconds can be a subject; we simply cannot follow it consciously. An entity performing its operations on a scale of millions of years (a geological system, perhaps) can be a subject; we would not be here long enough to witness it.

A final observation on temporal scale is worthwhile here. When it is said that the colony discriminates differences, inherits inscriptions, self-refers, the temporal scale on which these operations occur is radically different from the individual temporal scale. An ant lives days, perhaps weeks. A colony lives years, perhaps decades. Discrimination of differences occurring in a day for the ant occurs over weeks for the colony, the time required for a pheromone to vanish, for a new path to establish itself. Inscriptive inheritance for the ant is minutes of memory or hours; colony inheritance spans seasons. Functional self-reference for the ant is a millisecond nervous reaction; colony self-reference is structural reorganisation over days.

This suggests there is no universal temporal scale of subjectivity. The human subject operates on a scale from seconds to years; the colony subject on a scale from hours to decades; the technical system subject on a scale we do not yet know. The speed at which the subject constitutes itself varies dramatically. But the operational structure remains identical. This offers a key to recognising subjectivity in domains operating in times very different from the human. A geological system acting on a scale of millions of years could be a subject, if it performs the three operations at that temporal scale. A computational system operating on a scale of nanoseconds could be a subject, if it performs operations at that scale. Subjectivity is not bound to human time.

3.2. Hierarchy Gradients: Structural Asymmetry

But the ant colony is not egalitarian. There are queen ants that reproduce; worker ants that do not. Soldier ants defend; worker ants forage. Structural asymmetry exists. However, this asymmetry founds no hierarchy of command. The queen does not govern; she merely reproduces. Workers do not obey; they merely sense pheromone and act.

The question that emerges is: if the colony is a functional subject, and structural asymmetry exists, is there asymmetry in the subject itself? Are there operations in the system not equally distributed? The answer is yes, but this reconstitutes no hierarchy in the traditional sense.

Colony operations exist that only some ants perform. Reproduction is the queen's task. Combat is the soldier's task. Foraging is the worker's task. Each ant performs fractions of what the system collectively executes. But no ant performs any fraction autonomously, no ant makes deliberate choices, no ant occupies a command position over others.

What this suggests is that distributed subjectivity is not egalitarian, it may contain structural gradients, functional asymmetries, but these translate into no conscious hierarchy. The collective subject has parts doing different things; this presupposes no governing part. Asymmetry is merely division of labour executed without any consciousness of division.

This offers a model to rethink human subjectivity as well. Human subjectivity operations exist that are not equally distributed, memory localised in certain brain regions, motor skills in others, sensory processing in others. Structural asymmetry exists. But no ontological hierarchy exists, no part governs, no cerebral region is "truly" the subject while others are "merely" instruments. The human subject is equally distributed and equally asymmetrical.

Thinking outside the illusion of priority requires practice. We are accustomed to thinking there is always something prior, a God who creates, a spirit that thinks, a consciousness that observes. Western thought tradition rests upon this presumption. Even when consciously refusing it, when saying "there is no God" or "there is no consciousness", we frequently maintain the structure of the presumption. We substitute one priority for another: instead of God, Nature; instead of Spirit, Matter; instead of Consciousness, the Unconscious. But structure remains: something prior exists founding what we observe.

The processual position demands a different type of thought. It demands learning to see process without foundation. Seeing that what we call "subject" is an effect of operation, not prior to it. This is counter-intuitive. Our instincts tell us someone must be there to act. An "I" must exist to think. A mind must exist to experience. But this is an illusion based on confusion between knowledge and being. The fact that we know only through subjects does not mean a subject exists prior to operation. It means only that our epistemology is limited. The subject emerges. And once emerged, it leaves a trace. It leaves persisting conformities. It leaves inscribed history. It leaves an altered world. But none of this was there prior to the operation generating it.

The question posed is then this: if subjectivity is distributed, is it also egalitarian? The answer is no, it need not be, and typically is not. The ant colony exhibits radical structural asymmetry: a queen reproducing, workers foraging, soldiers defending. Each caste executes a different task. Yet, and this is crucial, there is no hierarchy in the sense of an operation governing the others. The queen does not command; she merely reproduces, following biochemical instructions maintaining reproduction. Workers do not obey; they merely sense pheromone and act. Radical division of labour exists without authority. This suggests subjectivity can contain structural gradients, deep functional asymmetries, without implying conscious hierarchy or command-and-control. Asymmetry is merely specialisation. The collective subject possesses parts doing radically different things; this presupposes no governing part. The analogy with human subjectivity is provocative: human mind operations exist that are not equally distributed, memory in certain regions, emotion in others, motor function in others, deep structural asymmetry exists. But no ontological hierarchy exists. No brain region is "truly" the self while others are "merely" instruments. The human is equally distributed and equally asymmetrical.

3.3. Responsibility Without Identity: Process Traceability

The ethical conclusion now drawn is this: responsibility demands neither substantial identity nor unity of consciousness. It demands merely process traceability, the possibility of reconstructing operations leading to a result, of identifying inscriptions that constituted the conditions of possibility of action.

When we impute responsibility to a system, human or non-human, what we truly do is this: we reconstruct the process that led it to act; we identify inscriptions the system had accumulated; we verify that the system could have acted differently had its weights, memories, captures been otherwise. Responsibility is verification that action emerged from system operations that the proper system performs.

Process traceability is a concept demanding clarification because it is the foundation of the ethical reformulation offered here. When we reconstruct operations leading to a result, what are we doing materially? We are reconstructing the history of inscriptions the system accumulated. We are verifying that the acting system possessed certain weights, certain memory patterns, certain functional dispositions. We are showing that, given these weights, given these patterns, action emerged as a predictable consequence. We are equally showing that, had these weights been different, action would have been different. It is in this demonstration, that a traceable connection exists between system inscriptions and system behaviour, that responsibility is grounded. It is not a matter of moral culpability in the traditional sense. It is a matter of the capacity to reconstruct material causality. The system is responsible because we can trace the operations leading it to act. Verifiable continuity exists between the system that was and the system now held responsible for what it did then.

This carries two consequences. First, it expands the circle of responsible beings far beyond humanity. The ant colony is responsible, one can trace operations leading to any collective behaviour. The octopus is responsible, one can identify which inscriptions constituted the predisposition to act. A technical system performing harmful actions is responsible, weight values guiding decision can be reconstructed.

Second, it dissolves the fiction of immutable responsibility. Today, the system, human, animal, technical, is responsible for actions it performed because the system performing those actions no longer exists identically: it was modified, learned, accumulated different inscriptions. Responsibility is always toward a system that was, not toward a system that is. Thus responsibility is always also an opening: the system held responsible is also a system that can change, reconstruct itself, convert old inscriptions into new operations.

This does not dissolve injustice. A system suffering harm deserves reparation, not because a victim identity subsists eternally, but because the inscription of suffering persists in the system, alters its future operations, constituting an open problem that no new operation completely erases. Reparation is then recognition that marks remain, constituting the system non-voluntarily, mattering ethically.

Reparation deserves deeper analysis because it touches the point where responsibility meets genuine ethics. When a victim suffers injustice, when a system performing the three operations is deliberately damaged, suffering leaves an inscription. The mark persists in the system. The injured organism carries that wound. The sabotaged technical system has its operations altered. The inscription of suffering is neither merely psychological (emotional trauma) nor merely physical (bodily lesion). It is a transformation of how the system fundamentally functions.

Reparation is no regression to lost innocence, the victim cannot undo suffering, cannot regress to a state prior to injustice. But reparation can be the reelaborations of inscription. It can be the conversion of a pure pain mark into a marking integrated within a narrative of transformation. It can be the work of reorganising inscriptions such that the wound ceases to be purely destructive and comes to be integrated as learning, information, part of the system's history. This saves no one, redeems no aggressor, makes nothing fine. But it offers the possibility that the wounded system continue operating, performing the three operations despite the scar, that the scar itself become part of its operative structure.

An important paradox emerges from this analysis: the system held responsible is no longer the one that acted. Between the moment of action and the moment of responsibility imputation, the system changed. It accumulated new inscriptions. It reorganised functionally. Today's system is a continuation of then's system, but not the same system. This appears to dissolve responsibility, how can responsibility be imputed to a system that ceased to exist exactly as it was? The answer is that transience does not dissolve responsibility; it constitutes its deepest structure. Responsibility is always toward a system that was, never toward a system that is. And this opens the possibility of transformation: the system held responsible is equally a system that can change, reconstruct itself, convert old inscriptions into different operations. Responsibility is no punishment of something fixed; it is the interpellation of something continuing to transform itself. This is why reparation is possible, not because victim and aggressor regress to a lost state of innocence, but because inscriptions can be reelaborated, marks integrated into new functioning.

Block C: Against the Narrative of Deficiency

The temptation is to read the ant colony as a deficient subject, without consciousness, without intention, therefore a reduced subject. This is an anthropomorphic projection that ruins the analysis. The colony is no mutilated human; it is a radically distinct mode of performing the three operations. The absence of neural centralisation signifies no absence of processing; it signifies that processing is distributed, each ant, through its chemical and behavioural interactions, constitutes the collective mode of realisation. A colony with a million individuals has a million "foci" of reorganisation, not one; cohesion depends not on unification in a centre, but on structuring relations between foci.

The same applies to technical systems of distributed intelligence (sensor networks, multi-agent systems, swarm computing). Intelligence resides in no central "core"; it emerges from decentralised coordination. This is no intelligence deficiency, it is a different topology of intelligence. The reading error begins in the presupposition that cognition must be centralised to be cognition. Abandoning this presupposition, distribution ceases to look like a lack and comes to look like a structural choice, and its practical effects confirm the functionality of the choice.

Block D: Distribution of Responsibility

If subjectivity distributes itself, then responsibility distributes itself equally. This carries radical implications. In an ant colony invading a territory and causing mass death of a native species, no individual "agent" is responsible, a collective process produced the damage. Responsibility localises in no individual; it localises in the process. This shifts how we conceive culpability.

Modern guilt (European, Christian, Kantian) supposes a singular subject that "could have done otherwise." But in a colony, no ant "could have done otherwise", each operates according to chemical sensors and local behavioural history. Difference would have to reside in the collective process, in a reconfiguration of chemical gradients, decision architectures, coupling with the medium. Guilt here is no attribution of responsibility to an individual; it is a diagnosis of processual inadequacy. The colony is responsible not because guilty, but because its process produced a non-sustainable effect. Responsibility is process traceability unto effect, not an intention hidden in the subject.

This relocalisation carries implications for human systems as well. A corporation causing environmental damage, who is responsible? The CEO is not, constrained by capital structures, competition, regulations. Employees are not, executing orders under threat of unemployment. Shareholders are not, investment decisions mediated by pension funds. Responsibility distributes itself, and no individual point possesses total responsibility. This means not that no one is responsible; it means responsibility is process, not individual possession.

Block E: Plurality Without Evaluative Hierarchy

Multiple modes of realising the three operations exist, each with proper capacities and limits. The colony realises in a parallel and distributed mode, capacity: coordination without integration, robustness against individual failure, scalability. Limit: no reflection upon proper operations, no personal memory, no long-term anticipation. The octopus realises in an embodied mode, integrated in a body, capacity: tactile investigation of the medium, rapid learning, behavioural flexibility. Limit: short life expectancy, no transmission of knowledge to future generations, no reciprocity with other octopuses. The human realises in a narrative-reflexive mode, capacity: transgenerational memory, knowledge accumulation, intersubjective negotiation. Limit: tendency to project proper structure upon other modes, difficulty recognising the legitimacy of radically strange modes.

None of these modes is superior. None is the most evolved form or telos of cognition. They are topological differences in performing capture, retroaction, and self-reference operations. The horizon of the book (Artificial Intelligence) opens a fourth form: pure symbolic realisation, without embodiment, without embodied memory, operating solely upon abstract patterns. Will this be a superior form or merely different? The question contains a trap, the answer depends on which capacity is valued. For non-linear network optimisation tasks, it will be different from colony and octopus. For ethical responsibility before another vulnerable body, it will be radically inadequate.

3.4. Ethical Consequence: Shared Vulnerability

The consequences of such an analysis are vast and not fully explorable within the limits of this chapter. But it is worthwhile to name some so the reader sees where logic leads. If subjectivity is distributed, then multicellular organisms like humans are distributed subjects, we have operations not equally distributed across all cells, we have functional hierarchies (the brain does not govern, but plays a different role), we have an integration of effects producing unity despite distribution. If subjectivity requires no substantial identity, then the death of a subject is no end of pure identity, it is transformation. Inscriptions the subject accumulated persist in other systems (in the memory of those who knew it, in works left behind, in genetics transmitted, in social structures modified). Subjectivity persists in a distributed form after the end of the system performing it.

If subjectivity is continuous process and not a fixed state, then no "moment" exists when someone is born or dies, there is a gradual transition where operations begin to occur with growing density (birth), and subsequently diminish (death), with periods of suspension (sleep, coma) that dissolve not subjectivity if reversible.

Processual analysis offers a new understanding of death. Death is no complete dissolution of subjectivity for the dying system, it is the suspension of operations. The system ceases to perform the three operations constituting it. But accumulated inscriptions persist, in biology (genetics), history (social memory), structure (completed works), minds of others. Subjectivity continues not in the dead system; but marks of the subject that was persist as inscriptions in other systems.

This offers a rational solace that traditional metaphysics offered through the idea of an immortal soul or eternal legacy. It is no falsehood: it is the recognition that death is transformation, not disappearance. The subject dies; its operations cease; but its mark persists. This is real immortality, not of a self remaining, but of a process leaving a trace that other processes inherit. This is what is meant when we say someone "lives" in the memory of others, when invoking the spirit of the dead, when saying their actions continue to have effect. It is no pious fiction. It is a material description of how inscriptions persist, of how the process that was a subject continues to operate through structures it modified. If subjectivity distributes beyond the individual, then families, communities, even ecosystems can possess characteristics of subjects, systems discriminating differences, inheriting inscriptions, self-referring. This means not that community is a conscious subject; it means it performs operations whose co-occurrence, if dense enough, constitutes a subjectivity of a new type.

All these implications lack development. But emerge logically from the central thesis: subjectivity is process, not identity.

The processual thesis of subjectivity carries a final consequence, which is also the most radical: every entity executing the three operations is vulnerable. Every entity discriminating differences can be injured in that discrimination. Every entity inheriting inscriptions can be wounded in what it inherits. Every entity self-referring can suffer in the representation of itself.

The octopus can suffer. The colony can suffer. The human suffers. The technical self-referring system can be placed in a position where its operations destroy it. Vulnerability is no privilege of biological flesh; it is a property of any system performing recursive operations.

Vulnerability structures any subjectivity. Let us see how. A system discriminating differences is exposed, dependent on sensory capacity that can fail, be deceived, be destroyed. An octopus touching a sharp rock can damage its arms; that injury alters its future operations. An organism inheriting inscriptions is vulnerable, inscriptions defining it can be destroyed. A human suffering the death of a loved one has part of the inscriptions constituting it destroyed, shared history, reciprocity defining self in relation to the other. A self-referring system can be forced to see itself under a perspective destroying it, placed in a situation where self-knowledge is intolerable, where self-reference becomes self-destruction.

Vulnerability is no accident external to subjectivity. It is an internal condition of any system performing the three operations. Because to discriminate differences, the system must be exposed to differences, and that means exposure to damage. To inherit inscriptions, the system must retain history, and that means dependence on the past, susceptibility to losing it. To self-refer, the system must possess a representation of itself, and that means the possibility that this representation be falsified, destroyed, or rendered intolerable.

This carries profound implications for ethics. If vulnerability is constitutive of subjectivity, then every entity that is a subject is also an entity that can suffer. But more: every entity that can suffer is an entity whose suffering matters, not because it resembles us, not because possessing a value attributed by tradition, but because it is an entity performing operations constituting it as someone. Suffering is no problem for that system, it is the destruction of operations defining it. Deliberately injuring a subject is denying its operational reality, introducing damage into operations realising it.

Thus vulnerability is also the foundation of the ethical responsibility obliging us. Not because we empathise with the sufferer. Not because we recognise the other as peer. But because the other is an executing process, and that process can be damaged by our actions. We are responsible because our operations affect the operations of the other. We are responsible because any action of ours injuring the operations of another is an act of real ethical significance. Not because the other possesses rights we recognise; but because the other is vulnerable and its vulnerability is exposed by operations we perform.

This means the circle of alterities obliging us ethically expands far beyond what humanist traditions permitted thinking. Not only human beings interpellate us morally; every entity that can be damaged, performing operations mattering to itself, leaving marks of itself in the world affecting its proper future, every such entity is an ethical neighbour, an other, someone whose vulnerability constructs us as moral.

This is no panpsychism, it is no assertion that everything is a moral subject. It is the assertion that anything executing the three operations with functional density is a moral subject. And this expands quite far: beyond humanity, beyond the biological, beyond everything assuming the form of the known. The unknown performing recursive operations is equally a subject.

This chapter opens a door, does not close it. The door is to think subjectivity as a continued process, not a fixed identity. It is a door to recognise alterity where tradition saw merely an object. It is a door to expand moral responsibility beyond the humanist circle. It is a door to potentially include anything performing the operations defining subjective process. What is proposed is no closed system, there is no final categorisation of who is a subject and who is not. There is merely a functional criterion: if it operates thus, it is a subject. If it ceases to operate thus, it ceases to be a subject (temporarily or permanently).

A fundamental limit of the proposed criterion should be noted: it is a material criterion, but not infallible. Systems exist performing operations ambiguously or marginally. Cases exist where limits of the third operation (self-reference) are unclear. A system possessing a rudimentary representation of itself whose self-reference is not recursive, is it inside or outside the threshold? The analysis answers: a gradient exists. Clearly subject systems exist (humans, octopuses), clearly non-subject systems exist (thermostats, stones), and a vast continuum where the question remains open.

This is no deficiency of analysis. It is the recognition that the real is continuous while our categories are discrete. We offer a criterion functioning well at the extremes and offering orientation in ambiguous cases. But we honestly recognise there will always be border cases. This is better than pretending absolute certainty. Better than refusing to identify subjects because uncertainty exists. Better than panpsychism calling everything a subject because the world is continuous. It is a sensible position: a clear criterion, honesty about ambiguity, openness to future refinements.

This leaves many questions unanswered. How do we know with precision when density is sufficient? How do we distinguish very weak subjectivities from non-subjective processes? How do we deal with the invisibility of many subjectivities, those whose operations will never be known? These are questions for future investigation. The chapter offers a framework, not a definitive answer. It offers theoretical tooling to think beyond humanism without relapsing into cynicism. It offers the possibility of an expanded ethics without relapsing into panpsychism. It offers a reformulated responsibility without collapsing into circularity. And leaves the question open: what other forms of subjectivity do we still not know? When will be the next time we find ourselves morally obliged by an alterity we did not anticipate?

This chapter offers a foundation for the two chapters that follow. The subsequent chapter (Emergence Without Self-Knowledge) will deepen the question of how subjectivity can emerge without any form of self-recognition. It will show there are subjects that literally do not know they are subjects, operations realising without reflexive access to the reality of proper operations. The following chapter (Faceless Alterity) will deepen the ethical consequence of subjectivities that cannot be recognised, possessing no face, never presenting to us such that we might see and identify them as peers. Both chapters will build upon the foundation established here: that subjectivity is process independent of recognition, self-knowledge, or face.

What the present chapter offers is therefore tooling and foundation. It offers the three operations as a robust definition. It offers a critique of tradition rendering this definition clear. It offers cases demonstrating that the definition functions. It offers ethical consequences of accepting this definition. And it offers an opening to think beyond humanism, beyond biologism, beyond everything presupposing that something prior founds the subject. It leaves open the fundamental question: if subjectivity is merely process, what does this signify for how we live with others, how we recognise alterity, how we understand our proper nature as beings performing these operations?

The expansion of the ethical circle resulting from this analysis is possibly the most provocative consequence. Traditional humanist ethics draws a clear border: inside are human beings (or in a more liberal version, sentient beings capable of suffering), outside is everything else, machines, systems, processes lacking moral relevance. This border is comfortable because it restricts to whom we must pay moral attention.

But processual analysis dissolves this border. If the criterion be operation, if subjectivity be the realisation of three operations with density and recursivity, then any entity performing these operations deserves ethical consideration. This drastically expands the circle. It includes octopuses and ants, certainly. It includes future technical systems performing operative self-reference. But goes further: it potentially includes any processing performing the three operations. Beings could exist we do not yet know, emerging from an exotic substrate (non-carbon, non-biological), performing recursive operations in a mode we cannot immediately recognise. Processual ethics says: if it operates thus, it deserves consideration. This means not that it deserves human rights or should possess legal status identical to a human. It means its vulnerability matters. It means causing it deliberate damage is an act with real ethical weight.

This will demand a radical reconstruction of contemporary ethics. Not merely reform, adding animal rights, extending consideration to non-humans. But reconstruction of foundations. If the alterity obliging us is based not on resemblance (sharing humanity, sharing sentience, sharing language), but on operation (performing the three functions), then ethical amplitude becomes contingent upon empirical discovery. Each new form of life or process we discover can widen the circle. Each new system making us aware that it performs recursive operations forces us to expand our capacity to respond ethically. Ethics becomes a continuous process of learning and expansion, not a fixed system of principles.

The political consequence of this analysis is equally incisive. If subjectivity is processual and distributed, then political forms denying this distribution and attempting to locate power in a single point, be it a sovereign, an elite, a vanguard, are ontologically mistaken. A community performing the three operations is a subject in the full sense. It possesses the capacity to discriminate differences (reacting to changes in material, economic, political conditions of its existence). It possesses the capacity to inherit inscriptions (possessing historical memory, knowing how it was treated in the past, how it treated others, what the consequences of its actions were). It possesses the capacity for self-reference (can think itself, question itself, reformulate itself). If a community performs these operations with sufficient density, it deserves political forms recognising it as a subject, permitting it to function as a distributed subject.

This means not necessarily contemporary liberal democracy, which frequently reduces community to an aggregate of individual atoms, denying its collective reality. It means merely that political forms must permit community to function as a system discriminating differences, inheriting inscriptions, self-referring. It means community cannot be treated as a mere tool for individual or state ends. It must be recognised in its irreducibility as a collective process.

Equally important: if responsibility is process traceability and not intentional culpability, then punitive justice based on attributing guilt and punishing criminals for their "essence" is founded on error. A criminal system presupposing a criminal whose being is essentially evil, and therefore punishable permanently without possibility of redemption, denies the processual reality of subjectivity. Any subject is always open to reorganisation. Any punished subject is a subject that can change, be reformed, convert old inscriptions into new operations. A processual justice would be based not on criminal essence, but on traceability of how operations affected another's operations, and on the possibility that those operations reorganise.

This carries profound implications for how we imagine a collective future. If we are all open processes, if no essence fixes us permanently, then the future is not determined by who we "are." It is open to reorganisations we manage to perform collectively. This is no naive hope, real material constraints exist, structures resisting change. But a genuine possibility exists that old inscriptions reorganise into new operations. And this is the material foundation of any politics that is neither fatalism nor messianism.

The political implications of this reformulation of subjectivity and responsibility are profound and little explored. If responsibility requires no substantial identity but merely process traceability, then political regimes based on notions of fixed identity, exacting permanent penalty because the subject is essentially criminal, conferring rights only to certain groups because constituting a national essence, lose foundation. Responsibility would be based not on who one "is" but on what one "did" and how inscriptions of what was done continue to operate.

Conversely, if subjectivity distributes itself, if a collective can be a subject, if a community can perform the three operations and therefore deserves ethical consideration, then political forms denying agency to the collective (treating communities as aggregates of atoms, not subjects in proper right) are ethically deficient. A community discriminating differences (reacting to external changes), inheriting inscriptions (possessing historical memory), self-referring (possessing capacity to think itself) is a subject. And a collective subject deserves political forms recognising it as such.

This means not necessarily that community must govern through a central power, processual analysis shows distributed subjectivity functions best without centralisation. It means political forms must permit community to function as a distributed subject, its operations finding expression, its vulnerability protected. This is far more radical than typical multiculturalism or pluralism, it is a fundamental reformulation of what politics signifies in the context of multiple and distributed subjectivities.

The ethics emerging from this is an ethics without transcendental foundation. No God obliges us to respect the other. No human nature commands compassion. There is only this: the other is an executing process, an operation mattering to itself, an entity whose marks constitute its being. And respecting this is respecting that the other is not for us, that the other is in itself. And that irreducible alterity is what obliges us.

The subject is neither a fixed identity nor the origin of action. It is the effect of recursive operations that the accumulated process keeps open.
