1. The Technical Condition
When Leroi-Gourhan examined the fossil record of human motor evolution, he discovered something counter-intuitive: the hand did not become agile because a pre-existing human intellect invented tools. Rather, the hand became agile through continuous co-evolution with the objects it manipulated.
The sequence is not: human first, then tool. The sequence is:
- Upright posture frees the hand from locomotion.
- The freed hand manipulates material objects.
- The manipulation of objects applies evolutionary pressure to motor control and brain morphology.
- The enlarged neocortex enables more sophisticated technical operations, which in turn require further anatomical and neural adaptation.
Brain expansion follows technical complexification; it does not precede it. The human brain is not the cause of technique; it is the anatomical effect of co-evolution between the hand, the eye, and the material tool.
Following Gilbert Simondon's theory of individuation, the individual is not a static starting point that subsequently interacts with the environment. The individual is a continuous process of differentiation out of a pre-individual substrate of material tensions. The human is a permanently open individuation process, and technique is the medium through which this individuation perpetuates itself.
Bernard Stiegler radicalised this insight through the concept of the défaut d'origine (default of origin). The human has no pure, unmediated origin. Human existence is constituted by its own technical externalisation: memory is externalised into writing, force into tools, perception into optical instruments, and calculation into computing machines. By delegating capacities to external artefacts, the human is continually re-made by the very tools it projects outward.
2. The Human Without Essence
If the human is constitutively technical, it follows that there is no immutable human essence that can serve as a static norm or refuge. There is no fixed substance beneath historical transformations, only continuous technical re-individuation.
Traditional humanism attempts to isolate a non-technical core, whether reason, dignity, soul, or emotional authenticity, and defend it against technical encroachment. This attempt rests on a false dichotomy. Phenomenologically and historically, every human capacity is mediated by technique:
- The Agrarian Body: The bone structure, posture, and motor habits of an agricultural labourer differ fundamentally from those of a hunter-gatherer.
- The Industrial Body: Factory labour disciplined human bodies into rigid spatial rhythms and mechanical synchronisation.
- The Digital Body: Contemporary screen-based interaction produces new physical postures ("text neck", carpal tunnel), new visual habits, and re-wired attentional architectures.
Human "essence" is not an origin; it is a retrospective attribution. We take a snapshot of a specific historical configuration of the technical human and label it "essential human nature" to soothe our fear of flux. But this permanence is an illusion. There is no non-technical sanctuary to return to. The political task is not to defend a fictional pure humanity, but to deliberate on how the human shall be technical and how technique shall rewrite us.
3. Exteriorisation and Interiorisation
Leroi-Gourhan formulated technique as exteriorisation: the expulsion of biological functions into external artefacts. Yet exteriorisation is only half of the cycle. Every exteriorisation is followed by a re-interiorisation that reconfigures the human organism:
- Memory: When memory is exteriorised into cuneiform, parchment, or print, the human brain is relieved of raw rote-retention demands. The brain re-interiorises this technique by reorganising its neural pathways for linear visual analysis, critical distance, and textual critique.
- Perception: When perception is exteriorised into telescopes, microscopes, or digital cameras, the eye learns to read mediated visual data (graphs, spectral scans, pixel arrays). Perception becomes an active synthesis of biological vision and technical instrumentation.
- Motor Force: When physical labour is exteriorised into steam engines or automated assembly lines, human physical exertion declines, while demands for fine motor control, interface navigation, and system monitoring increase.
This feedback loop means that technical delegation does not leave the human unchanged. The human who delegates memory to a smartphone does not remain a traditional memoriser who happens to possess a phone; their cognitive architecture adapts to an access-based memory model ("the Google effect"), where the brain remembers where and how to retrieve information rather than storing raw data internally.
1. Technique as the Rewriting of the Body
The human body is not an invariant biological datum; it is a historical form shaped by technical regimes of life.
- Skeletal and Muscular Adaptations: Palaeontological and archaeological evidence shows that transition from foraging to agriculture altered bone density, dental alignment, and joint wear. Industrial factory work reshaped motor habits, while digital interfaces induce specific postural deformities (cervical spine stress, repetitive strain injuries).
- Technological Pathology: Pathologies are not random individual failings; they are direct physical inscriptions of technical regimes. The industrial era produced heavy-metal poisonings and black lung; the digital era produces myopia, chronic sedentary metabolic shifts, and repetitive strain syndromes.
- Micro-Skill Acquisition: Technique refines bodily capacity. The hand of a surgeon, the fingers of a pianist, or the visual tracking of a digital operator demonstrate how repeated technical engagement physically alters motor cortex representations.
As Marshall McLuhan noted, every medium is an extension of the human body that retroactively alters the sensory balance of the entire organism. We do not possess a non-technical body; we inhabit a technical body that is continually rewritten by the tools it operates.
2. Technique as the Rewriting of Perception
Perception is not a passive sensory reception; it is an active, technically mediated event. The technical apparatus dictates the horizon of what can be perceived, known, and acted upon:
- The Telescope and Microscope: Expanded the perceptual horizon to the infinitely distant and the infinitely small, collapsing ancient cosmologies and constructing modern empirical science.
- Photography and Cinema: Walter Benjamin identified how photography and film introduced an "optical unconscious". Slow motion, close-ups, and montage reconfigured human temporal and spatial perception, making visible movements and micro-expressions that escape the naked eye.
- Digital Interfaces: Contemporary touchscreens, algorithmic feeds, and augmented-reality displays mediate daily experience. Perception becomes fragmented, continuous, and algorithmically curated.
Because perception is technically mediated, whoever controls the perceptual apparatus exerts immense political power. Media platforms, optical systems, and algorithmic filters do not merely display reality; they set the boundaries of what counts as visible and real within the public legibility regime.
3. Technique as the Rewriting of Memory
Memory is the primary locus of human technical transformation. As examined across four major historical shifts:
- Oral Culture: Memory is bodily, rhythmic, and formulaic. Recitation relies on meter, rhyme, and physical performance. The scope of memory is constrained by organic brain capacity.
- Chirographic Culture (Handwriting): Externalises memory onto parchment and paper. Textual memory becomes linear, visual, and cumulative, enabling complex legal and philosophical systems at the expense of oral fluidity.
- Typographic Culture (Print Press): Standardises memory across thousands of identical copies. Knowledge becomes decentralised, searchable, and open to systematic public critique.
- Digital Culture: Memory becomes hyper-mnesic, automated, and algorithmically indexed. The burden of retention shifts from human brains to cloud servers.
Digital memory introduces a profound transformation: memory becomes a property of external server architectures owned by private corporate entities. As a result, memory is no longer an individual psychological capability, but a militarised, commercialised field of surveillance and algorithmic curation.
1. The Politics of Artefacts
Technique is never politically neutral. As Langdon Winner famously argued ("Do Artefacts Have Politics?"), technical artefacts embody political arrangements in their very design:
- Built Architecture: Overpasses designed by Robert Moses in New York were intentionally built low to prevent public buses, used predominantly by low-income and minority populations, from accessing suburban beaches, while allowing access to private automobile owners. The physical design enforced social segregation.
- Algorithmic Architecture: Social media algorithms designed to maximise "engagement" systematically prioritise content that triggers outrage, polarisation, and addiction. The political consequence is built directly into the optimisation code.
Technique is political because it assigns capabilities, structures access, redistributes power, and dictates bodily habits. The choice between centralising or decentralising technical architectures is fundamentally a political choice regarding the structure of human collective life.
2. Technical Alienation and Emancipation
Technical exteriorisation contains an enduring dialectic:
- Alienation (Proletarianisation): As Bernard Stiegler argued, when technical knowledge is fully embedded into automated machines, the human worker suffers from proletarianisation, the loss of savoir-faire (know-how) and savoir-vivre (know-how-to-live). The artisan is reduced to a machine tender who executes opaque commands without understanding the underlying technical process.
- Emancipation: Conversely, technique can liberate human bodies from brutal physical toil, disease, and geographic isolation. Braille emancipates blind readers; wheelchairs and accessible architecture emancipate mobility-impaired individuals; open-source software democratises access to global knowledge.
The struggle over technique is not a romantic rejection of technology, but a political fight to prevent technical emancipation from being captured by private commercial monopolies and surveillance regimes.
3. The Threshold of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence represents a critical threshold in the history of technique. For the first time, automated systems execute operations previously considered the exclusive domain of human cognition: pattern recognition, linguistic composition, visual synthesis, and decision-making.
AI does not require "human-like consciousness" to transform human existence. Operating as an automated processor of statistical patterns, AI rewrites:
- Cognitive Labour: Automating writing, translation, legal analysis, coding, and medical diagnostics, extending proletarianisation from manual labour to intellectual professions.
- Creativity: Re-defining creative production as the statistical recombination of inherited patterns, shifting human artistic value toward that which resists algorithmic prediction.
- Authenticity: Generative synthesis (deepfakes, automated text) destabilises the documentary value of visual and auditory evidence, rendering the boundary between the real and the synthetic technically undecidable.
AI marks the horizon where technical operations become opaque black boxes. When algorithmic decision-making governs credit, employment, criminal justice, and information flow without transparent human audit, technical alienation reaches its structural peak.
4. Closure: The Rewriting That Does Not End
Technique does not end the human; technique continually restarts the human.
There is no original, non-technical baseline to retreat to. The romantic quest for an unmediated, natural human existence is a philosophical fantasy. We are, and have always been, technical beings whose bodies, minds, perceptions, and memories are co-constituted by our tools.
The decisive question facing contemporary society is not how to stop technique, but who shall govern its continuous rewriting:
- Shall technique remain an instrument of corporate capture, algorithmic surveillance, and cognitive proletarianisation?
- Or can technique be democratically re-designed as an open, emancipatory infrastructure that expands human capability and collective freedom?
The rewriting of the human is an ongoing, open-ended process. The political task of our era is to actively, consciously, and collectively participate in this technical rewriting, asserting democratic control over the machines that remake our world.
