Introduction to Theme I
A tool preserves a gesture outside the moment in which it was invented. Its material form directs later movements, carries earlier solutions into new situations, and changes the body that learns to use it.
Chapter 1 begins with the hand extended through an object and altered by that extension; Chapter 2 examines the tool as a material memory capable of retaining sequences without consciousness; Chapter 3 follows the power embedded in objects, whose design distributes access and constraint across the relations in which they operate.
The theme makes technical memory concrete. What persists in a tool is neither an intention kept intact nor a neutral capacity waiting for any use. It is an organised field of possibilities that can be resumed, diverted, or refused, and whose effects participate in forming the users who inherit it.
