Life Beyond the Biological

General Index Field-Book VIII Theme I

Life Beyond the Biological is the first movement of Field-Book VIII, opening the argument through three chapters.

Theme introduction

Introduction to Theme I

Life exceeds familiar signs such as breathing, movement, or resemblance to known organisms. Removing those signs from the definition does not erase the difference between living and non-living systems; it makes the operative criteria more demanding.

Chapter 1 tests respiration against forms of metabolism that persist without oxygen; Chapter 2 displaces humanity from the measure of life's significance and origin; Chapter 3 confronts the absence of an ultimate definition while preserving the need to distinguish verified living organisation from speculative possibilities.

The theme opens biological boundaries through concrete operations of maintenance and exchange, together with the capacity to respond. No single material composition exhausts those operations, yet complexity alone cannot establish life. The unresolved limit remains productive because new cases must alter the criteria by which they are examined, rather than merely receiving an inherited name.
