Theme introduction
Introduction to Theme I
A body persists through exchanges that also expose it to alteration. The same openness that permits nourishment and movement also makes response possible, while leaving every organism vulnerable to damage whose effects may remain long after the immediate event.
Chapter 1 removes invulnerability from the possible conditions of embodiment. Chapter 2 follows pain beyond the model of a signal, attending to the way it reorganises experience and time; Chapter 3 confronts the fiction of complete recovery by examining persistence through scars and losses that reshape the capacities of a body.
Ruin is neither an external accident nor the whole truth of the body. It names the persistence of material consequences within a living organisation that can continue without becoming what it was. Vulnerability therefore enters the account of endurance itself, where every recovery remains situated and partial.
