Introduction to Theme III
Responsibility begins before any agent can occupy a sovereign position above the relations in which it acts. A response already reorganises a situation, exposing both its limits and its capacity to be altered by another body.
Chapter 7 treats response as a form of thought arising within material implication; Chapter 8 follows the other as a destabilising presence that exceeds prior categories and forces their revision; Chapter 9 releases ethics from the promise of salvation, leaving action answerable to consequences it cannot wholly repair.
Without a centre, responsibility does not disappear. It becomes distributed across unequal capacities to affect, protect, refuse, or remain silent. Ethical action gains no guarantee of purity or success; its force lies in sustaining a response where vulnerability makes indifference materially consequential.
