1.1. Thought Is Born of the Body That Exceeds
The operation of thought begins with an apparently simple inquiry: if the body is language, operating consciousness, memory, and speech within a material regime, what is thinking? The traditional response projects a separate dimension, a "spirit" supervising the body. But this projection has already been dissolved. There is no immaterial layer where thought resides. There is a single material plane where the body operates in different regimes, the automatic regime, the linguistic regime, the conceptual regime. The difference is not between "mind" and "body", but between modes of operation of the same body. Thought occurs when the body manages to operate upon its own symbolic operations, when the body becomes an object for itself, when language already realised becomes language questioned.
This issue manifests itself in the confrontation with specific examples. A five-year-old child speaking Portuguese fluently demonstrates operative mastery of language, verbal conjugations, syntactic constructions, and cohesive narratives emerge from her speech without her being able to justify them. She does not think the rules; she executes them. When that same child asks "why do people die?", something has shifted. Death was already known to the child through observation (a grandfather disappeared, insects found in the garden cease moving), but now it is not merely observation. The question forces a reorganisation: automatism has been interrupted. The child cannot simply continue living as if death were a mere accident. The question requires an answer, not of factual information that could be supplied externally, but of internal articulation allowing the disruption to be stabilised. The adolescent questioning parental authority experiences something similar, the discourse that organised his world (parents know best, obedience is owed) has been exposed to contradiction. His thought is an attempt at reorganisation, a search for an articulation accommodating both the parental bond and the emerging autonomy. The worker discovering that promises made by an institution do not correspond to what he observes, that equality is spoken of while exploitation occurs, that the system is said to benefit everyone while some are systemically impoverished, this worker is thinking. His thought is a response to immanent contradiction. None of these cases involves a separate "spirit". All involve the body reorganising its symbolic operations when faced with a disruption that the automatic regime cannot absorb.
Thought is a material operation of differentiation, articulation, and provisional stabilisation. It requires abstraction: the body must manage to operate upon its operations (metacognition, the capacity to reflect upon one's own thinking). It requires time: thinking is slow, costly, contrasting with the speed of automatic reflexes or installed habits. Deliberation consumes time that could be spent in immediate action. It requires prior constraints: one does not think from absolute void. All thought departs from language already realised, categories already sedimented, traditions preceding us. Thought is always thought within a world already linguistically structured. But novelty emerges precisely when these prior operations fail, when the habitual fails to absorb the disruption the body experiences. The child asking about death operates with inherited categories (life, death, time, causality) she did not create. But the question forces those categories to reorganise mutually in a new way. The ancient philosopher questioning common sense does not invent the language of questioning, he inherits it from traditions of prior questioning. But his thought is a reorganisation of that inheritance when faced with a specific problem. The revolutionary constellating a new way of understanding justice does not create new words, but articulates existing words into a configuration that previously possessed no legibility. Thought is always thought within a world, but it is the world being reorganised from within.
The energetic cost of thought is material and not decorative. The body that thinks, whatever conceptual complexity is involved, consumes glucose at a high rate. The neurobiological processes underlying deliberation, focused attention, and the resolution of conflicts between incompatible directions demand the mobilisation of neurotransmitters, activation of neural networks, and specific latencies that time must accommodate. Mental fatigue is not a metaphor. It is the experience of the body depleting resources to maintain reorganational operations. This carries consequences. The body does not think continuously. The biosoma alternates between automatic regimes (energetically efficient, viable for repeated daily actions) and explicit thought (costly, demanding, impossible to maintain indefinitely). Concentration is a costly operation. The creativity reorganising entire fields requires energy that the body must be able to expend. And this democratises thought, it is not a metaphysical privilege of revealed "geniuses". It is a costly bodily practice the biosoma performs when conditions converge: education providing language and categories, time not entirely consumed by immediate survival, basic security allowing intellectual risk, problems demanding resolution, and the disruption of automatism forcing thought. When these conditions are absent, as for many they have been and are, thought cannot emerge not through a defect in capacity, but through material impossibility. The slave whose life is consumed by toil cannot create epic poetry. A person starving to death cannot solve complex mathematical equations. This does not diminish the person's humanity, it demonstrates that thought, being a material operation, depends upon material conditions.
The temptation of residual dualism persists even when we declare that the mind does not exist. It resurfaces as: "yes, the body is important, but there is something 'more', an extra dimension that is pure, disembodied thought, capable of transcending matter." This temptation is resistance to the uncomfortable truth that there is no "more". There is the same body operating in a different regime. Part II demonstrated that the body is language. Now: the body is also thought. There is no immaterial layer where thought resides and from which it supervises the body. Thought is the form the body takes when it reorganises its symbolic operations under disruption. This does not mean vulgar reductionism, the illusion that explaining the neurobiology of thought reduces thought to mere neurology, rendering it less real or less meaningful. It means materialist monism: there is a single material plane with different description regimes. The linguistic register (first person: "I think", "I feel confused", "I see the solution") differs from the neurobiological register (third person: prefrontal cortex activation, dopaminergic modulation, connectivity configuration between regions). But these registers do not describe different realities. They describe the same process from different perspectives. Neither is "truer" than the other. The first-person perspective is legitimate and operative, describing the phenomenon from within, as lived experience. The third-person perspective is legitimate and operative, describing the phenomenon from without, through measurement. Both reveal real aspects of the same process. Dualism claims there are separate realities. Monism affirms there is a single process described in different modes. Thought is monistic: an operation of the body becoming legible through multiple perspectives, none capable of exhausting it.
Against dualism, therefore, we establish: thought is born of the body. It is not a transcendent gift, not a light dissipating darkness, not access to a superior dimension. It is the body reorganising itself when its operative excess saturates the habitual regime. It is the inheritance of the volume dedicated to the origin (excess as engine) specified within the symbolic domain. It is continuity with founding gestures, where the body produced material difference, now the body produces conceptual difference. It is radical homogeneity with linguistic operations, spoken language, narrated memory, the body becoming sign, now language operating upon itself in a more demanding regime. There is no ontological leap. There is operative intensification.
1.2. Genealogy of Separated Thought
The history of Western philosophy is not the history of the discovery of thought. It is the history of fictions that managed to appear as truths through repetition and institutionalisation. To understand the present, it is necessary to dismantle these fictions, showing how we came to believe that there is disembodied "pure thought", separated from matter, capable of transcending its bodily origin.
Descartes and the zero point. We return with critical intensification. The formula "I think, therefore I am" institutes thought as the sole domain of absolute certainty. The structure is violent: thought is separated from radical doubt, erected as ultimate foundation. This functioned as symbolic authorisation for centuries of contempt for matter, the body, and finitude. Cartesian thought wants a zero point, a place where reason begins pure, without inheritance, without a body constraining it, without a history preceding it. However, there is no zero point. All thought departs from specific material and historical conditions. The cogito proposed by Descartes is already thought within a world, Cartesian thought, seventeenth-century European male thought, thought inheriting categories from scholastic and theological traditions. The illusion is that thought can step outside itself and access a pure foundation. Cartesian dualism (res cogitans / res extensa) separates what is materially inseparable: thought cannot operate outside the body that thinks; the body cannot function intelligently without the operations thought performs. The separation is a projection of an ego wanting to step outside itself, to transcend its finitude. Descartes wanted to found thought upon doubt, but doubt is an operation of the body. It is disruption, hesitation, failure in the automatic. The cogito already presupposes what it wants to found. Doubt is the body experiencing excess it cannot absorb in the automatic regime. By declaring that doubt proves the existence of pure thought, Descartes manages only to prove that the body is confused. Confusion is material.
Plato and reminiscence. Platonic ontology institutes separation in another mode. There is a transcendent world of Forms, eternal, immutable, pure. There is a material world of copies, temporal, mutable, degraded. Thought occurs when the soul "remembers" what it knew prior to birth. This fiction presupposes an immortal (disembodied) soul, a transcendent world (outside matter), knowledge prior to life (prior to the body). All of this dissolves under radical materialism. There is no immortal soul, there is a body whose operation produces the effect of an intelligence. There is no transcendent world, there is a single material plane where the symbolic emerges. There is no knowledge prior to life, there are bodily operations sedimenting recognisable patterns. But the Platonic matrix remains influential. It resurfaces in every claim that "true" thought accesses something transcendent, being in itself, pure essence, immutable foundation. Subsequent philosophy (Kant, Hegel, Husserl) attempts to renew transcendence without Plato, without separate Forms, but with necessary universals, a priori structures, phenomenological essences. The matrix remains: thought as access to something pure, immaterial, superior to the contingent flow of material life. Against this: thought does not access, it operates. It does not discover pre-existing essences, it creates difference in the field of the existing. Thought is immanent to matter, not transcendent.
Kant and the transcendental a priori. The Kantian solution is more sophisticated. Kant correctly identifies a real fact: thought always operates within forms. There are formal constraints, categories, intuitions, structures of sensibility, organising thought before conscious thought begins. The thinking subject is not free to construct anything whatsoever. It cannot think "cause" outside relation to "effect"; it cannot operate numbers without space and time as dimensions of organisation. This insight is valid. The solution, however, that these forms are universal, innate, transcendental, necessary conditions of possible experience, is false. Constraints are historical, material, culturally sedimented. The categories we operate are not eternal structures of reason. They are inheritances of specific linguistic practices, institutions that shaped thought, traditions preceding us. Space and time are not a priori forms that every thinking subject must possess. They are dimensions of the real that the body learns to operate under specific conditions. A person born in a cave without access to light would not operate space and time in the same way. Histories of other cultures show: time can be conceived as cyclical (returning to the point of departure) or linear (irreversible progression). Space can be organised by cardinal directions, affective proximity, property, or river flows. None is the universal a priori form. All are forms emerging in specific material and cultural contexts. Retained from Kant: the constraint upon thought is real, thought is not free to think anything whatsoever. Rejected: transcendentality, constraints are not eternal structures of reason; they are sedimented material history. The consequence: reason remains constrained, but not by eternal, universal structures; by material history that could have been and can yet be different.
Spinoza, Differentiation (Retention and Rejection). Spinoza marks a critical point where rejection of dualism is most radical. His central affirmation: body and mind are not two separate substances (as in Descartes), nor two properties of a single substance operating in strict parallelism (as later interpretations held). For Spinoza, body and mind are expressions of a single substance, God, or Nature, in two different attributes. An idea is the same thing as a body, but expressed differently: one expressed in the attribute of extension (body as physical thing); another in the attribute of thought (the idea as thought of that thing). Parallelism is not chance, it is necessity: every modification in the attribute of extension has a corresponding modification in the attribute of thought because both express the same reality under different aspects.
Retained from Spinoza: (1) Radical immanence, no mind/body separation; a single material plane with different expression regimes. Thought is not an epiphenomenon of the body (not "merely" an accidental product of the body); nor is it over matter from outside, observing it from a superior dimension. It is the form matter takes when performing certain operations. Mind is always mind of body; body is always body capable of generating mind. Inseparability is ontological. This thesis is fundamental: it eliminates dualism completely because it admits neither two substances (Descartes) nor two attributes in parallelism (later interpretations). There is a single being in different modes. Thought inhabits no separate dimension. It exists as an expression of the same body that also exists in extensional expression (neuronal, somatic). (2) Power, Spinoza defines bodies and minds by their power (capacity to affect and be affected). A true idea increases the power of thinking; an affect decreasing power (sadness, when Spinoza says "sadness is a decrease in power") is also a decrease in thinking capacity. Here retained: thought is an extension of bodily power, not a separate dimension, but an intensification of the body's capacity. Thought is not a gift descending from beyond, it is an expression of the body's power when that power reorganises in a superior regime. (3) Against negativity as motor, in Spinoza, cause is always positive. Sadness does not "cause", it is the effect of decrease. Resistance, negation, obstacle are not primordial. Here retained the critique of negativity: thought does not emerge from "lack" or "negation" requiring "transcendence" to fill it. Thought emerges from material excess, operative capacity saturating installed regimes. This aligns radically with the position developed previously and inherited from the volume dedicated to origin.
Rejected from Spinoza: (1) Strict parallelism, the notion that mind and body are distinct attributes of the same substance, operating in perfect coordination without direct causality. Here there is only one material plane with different regimes, not two attributes in parallelism. Linguistic description and neurobiological description of thought are not two attributes operating in parallel. They are modes of description of the same process. (2) Geometric necessity, Spinoza: everything follows necessarily from the nature of God as geometric propositions follow from axioms. Affect is necessary; sadness is necessarily contained within the essence of the thing suffering. Here: constitutive contingency; the real is not necessary. The thought emerging was not necessary prior to emerging. (3) Affective teleology, Spinoza tends to view joy (increase in power) as "truer" than sadness because it increases power and brings one closer to God. Here: thought responds to disruptions and failures, it is not always "joyful". Hesitation, doubt, refusal are legitimate operations of thought. Sadness can be intelligent when recognising a limit. Grief can be appropriate. There is no ontological preference for the increase of power.
The genealogy emerging from this reading structures itself in a clear pattern: Descartes institutes separation via the zero point (doubt proves the disembodied cogito). Plato institutes it via a transcendent world (Forms existing beyond matter). Kant attempts an internal remedy (transcendantality is in the structure of subjectivity, not in a separate world), but maintains separation because categories are still a priori, still prior to material experience, still outside history. Hegel and later idealists radicalise the interior but remain within illusion: Spirit is now immanent to the real, but it is still Spirit, still mind, thought, ideality. Spinoza offers the repair closest to what we defend here because he institutes true immanence: mind and body are the same thing in different attributes. But he still retains residues of transcendence: parallelism (suggesting two registers in supernatural coordination), geometric necessity (suggesting everything follows necessarily, that pure logic exists outside matter), affective teleology (suggesting a "better" state, joy as truer than sadness). The present position: there is a single material plane where thought is an operation of the body reorganising itself, an operation constrained by material history that is not necessary, historical because made and capable of being otherwise, contingent because nothing guarantees it a priori, immanent because having no outside, bodily because not separate from body. Without separation. Without transcendence. Without zero point. Without parallelism. Without geometric necessity. Without teleology. Thought is pure cognitive metabolism: body processing body. This may seem weaker than the tradition claiming access to eternal truths, and it is weaker in cosmological scope. But it is stronger in real density: thought abandoning claims to transcendence finally manages to think materiality, finitude, and the responsibility of being here, now, in a body that shall die.
1.3. Anchoring: Embodied Neuroscience and Pragmatism
The philosophical dismissal of dualism finds empirical anchoring in contemporary neurobiological research. This does not mean neuroscience proves philosophy, each domain operates with its own validation criteria. It means that understanding thought as an embodied material operation finds support in how the body effectively performs thinking.
Somatic markers and embodied thought. Damasio, investigating patients with lesions in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, discovered that deliberation is not pure calculation performed in a private mental chamber. He discovered somatic markers: bodily signals (visceral, motor, hormonal) guiding deliberation before explicit consciousness can verbalise it. A patient with a lesion in this region could logically list pros and cons of a decision, but could not decide. Rational cognition was intact; emotional orientation was missing. This reverses the traditional narrative where emotion is noise disrupting pure thought. Against: emotion is not noise, it is fundamental orientation of thought. The body that "feels" a response is wrong before being able to justify it rationally is operating real cognition. The body hesitating because "something doesn't fit", that somatic sensation is active thought. A student solving a mathematical problem who has an intuition that the result is wrong, an intuition guiding him to check calculations, that student is thinking. Not "despite" emotion; through it. Enativism (Varela, Thompson, Rosch) radicalises this: cognition is not internal representation of the world (computation of symbols in a private cerebral chamber reproducing images of things in themselves). Cognition is an operative coupling between organism and environment. The body thinks in continuous interaction with a world that disrupted the automatic regime. The perceiver is not a passive observer capturing an image of the world. He is an agent exploring the world through movement, testing possibilities, able only to know what he manages to do. Colour is not an internal property of the object copied by the mind. It is a relation between object pigment, ambient light, and the eye's capacity to detect specific frequencies. Vision is activity, movement of the eyes, exploration of the visual field. Cognition is thus always bodily situated, always involved with environment, never pure contemplation. This anchoring renders returning to any dualism impossible: thought is visceral, motor, environmental. It is not access to a transcendent dimension. It is continued material engagement with the world.
Pragmatism and problem-solving. John Dewey offered a pragmatist conceptualisation aligning with enactive neuroscience. For Dewey, thought is not contemplative, it does not begin in a state of pure theoretical curiosity. It begins when the daily flow of action is interrupted. Most of the time, the body functions in an automatic regime. A person swims fluently, cooks efficiently, speaks natively, navigates social space, all without explicitly "thinking". Automatism is the normal condition. When, however, flow is interrupted by a problematic situation, water is too cold and the body begins to freeze; an essential ingredient is missing for the intended dish; an unexpected question exposes a gap in knowledge; a social conflict reveals a contradiction in installed convictions, thought emerges as a response to disruption. Thought succeeds when it manages to reorganise the problematic situation such that flow resumes. This democratises thought: every person thinks when solving concrete problems in their life. Resolution is practical, the idea is not true because it corresponds to a transcendent essence of the thing, but because it works, enabling effective action in the specific context. Retained: thought is born of disruption, not pure contemplation. Thought is interventionist, not contemplative. Rejected: instrumental reduction making thinking synonymous merely with solving technical problems. A poet complicating established language, creating a new way of saying, is thinking, the disruption is of linguistic sedimentation; the response is aesthetic reorganisation. An activist questioning institutionalised injustices is thinking, the disruption is of the regime of "normality" presenting itself as natural. Thought creates new problems, complications that did not exist before, openings destabilising what was automatic.
Distributed cognition. Contemporaneously, research in "distributed cognition" (Edwin Hutchins and others) shows that thought is not located exclusively inside an individual's skull. Thought is distributed across body, environment, instruments, shared language. Mathematics does not "reside" in the mind of the practitioner. It resides in paper, symbols, school practices, historical tradition of calculation. A child learning to count on fingers is not merely using fingers to "represent" numbers inside the mind. Numerical thought is co-realised by the body (fingers as counters), learned symbols, language naming "one", "two", "three". Remove fingers, symbols, language, and the child cannot think numbers in the same way. A navigator using charts, compasses, tide tables, is not using tools to implement thought existing purely before the tools. Nautical thought is distributed across body, instruments, shared knowledge of navigation traditions. A scientist working with microscope, spectrometer, computational statistics, scientific thought emerges from co-realisation between researcher and instrumentation. Distributed cognition has a radical political consequence: whoever controls the instruments of thought (paper, ink, writing, computers, algorithms) controls possible mental operations. Access to instruments of thought is access to the capacity to think certain types of thought. Exclusion from access is exclusion from modes of thought. Thought is not private, it is public, materialised, distributed. This refutes both mentalism (thought as an internal individual process) and computationalism (thought as a universal algorithm transferable from substrate to substrate). Thought is always already embodied in specific material practice. Changing the materiality of practice (from orality to writing, writing to printing, printing to digital computation) fundamentally changes which thoughts are possible.
1.4. The Body Is "A Great Reason"
Nietzsche, in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, formulates a paradoxical synthesis rescuing the body not as an obstacle to thought, but as its foundation: "The body is a great reason. / What is the body? A social thing." The formulation is provocative because it reverses the Western hierarchy where reason is a superior dimension that ought to govern the inferior body. Here: reason is not a faculty opposed to the body controlling it from above. Reason is the mode by which the body operates. To think is to evaluate, hierarchise, interpret, operations Nietzsche identifies as operations of the body before being operations of a separate "spirit". The body is not a blind machine that reason comes to dominate. The body is already reason in operation, material intelligence, will to interpretation. This replacement has an associated method: genealogy as a strategy of questioning. The genealogical question is not "what is truth?" in a transcendent sense. It is "who evaluates? under what conditions? with what forces? in relation to what interests?" Genealogy relocalises thought. It is not a search for absolute truth existing independently of who seeks it. It is a practice of evaluation always already situated, always rooted in a specific position in the world. The body that thinks is a body with a history, with wounds, desires, social position, active forces tending towards certain modes of understanding. The truth this body produces is situated truth. This prepares the dissolution of God to come, but here only fundamental rooting: all thought is bodily evaluation.
The interpreting body does not create sense ex nihilo. The body selects, from patterns the world offers, those making sense in relation to its capacities, history, position. A situation has multiple possible interpretations. The three-year-old child and the ancient philosopher see the same death of an insect. They interpret differently because their bodies have different capacities, different histories, different social positions. The child does not yet possess language for "death as irreversible end"; the philosopher possesses that language sedimented in years of reflection. Not always, however, is the difference between sophisticated and naive. A person in a position of power interprets humility as weakness; a person in a position of vulnerability interprets the same humility as wisdom recognising limits. Neither interpretation of the powerful is "truer". Both function in relation to the position of the interpreter. This is not relativism because the real offers constraints. Death cannot be interpreted as a playful gesture, and the body interpreting it as such, the child touching a dead insect expecting it to wake, that body will die if it applies the interpretation (death as possible game) to situations where death is real. The real vetoes interpretations incompatible with survival. But many interpretations manage to work. Hermeneutic pluralism is a material consequence, not an epistemological deficiency. The body choosing among possible interpretations is realising material intelligence. It is evaluating, hierarchising, producing difference. The child saying "the insect is sleeping", instead of accepting an adult saying "it is dead", that child is thinking. She is not wrong in an absolute sense (she will err later when trying to wake the dead insect). She is interpreting from her current cognitive capacity, her will to preserve security (death is terrifying; sleep is knowable, reversible). The interpretation will be revised. Reinterpretation is also thought.
Nietzschean genealogy as method. Genealogy is questioning refusing to accept the necessity of things. It does not ask "what is the true essence of X?". It asks "how did we come to believe X has this essence? what historical contingencies produced the conviction that X is thus? what forces would have to be in operation for us to believe X differently?". Genealogy is historical-material. It shows that what appears immutable has a history, was made, could have been otherwise. This does not render things less real, it renders them more real by rendering visible the operations producing them. Monogamous marriage appears "natural" until genealogy shows: it was institutionalised by property systems, wealth heredity, control of female sexuality. Nothing natural, everything made. Morality appears to have transcendent origin until genealogy relocalises it: emerging from accumulated resentments, wills to power denying themselves, rebellions achieving imposition through value inversion. Genealogy is demystifying. But it is not nihilistic, it does not claim everything is illusion and nothing matters. It states: things have history, were made, can be remade. Genealogy is liberating because it shows that what was constructed can be deconstructed and reconstructed differently. This genealogical methodology is an operation of thought: the body performing it is reorganising entire fields through historical reinterpretation. Genealogy is also a practice of violence, against illusions pretending to be natural, against values pretending to be transcendent, against powers pretending to be inevitable. It is violence performed through thought. The body thinking genealogically attacks what appeared solid, revealing that the solid was constructed, creating an opening for alternatives.
Creation as differentiation. Developing Nietzschean analysis: the body interpreting, selecting, reorganising, is creating difference. Not in the romantic sense where "genius" invents from nothing, where creation is supernatural inspiration. But in an operative sense: every new interpretation is differentiation from the prior situation. A body responding to disruption created an articulation that did not previously exist. It did not exist in the external world (the situation existed, it was merely interpreted differently). But it existed now as a possibility of the body in relation to the world. Darwin proposing natural selection created conceptual difference, the concept was not waiting to be discovered; it was produced as a new way of understanding life. A child learning to speak in a new way, inventing a word the community understands and adopts, created difference. It is not creation "ex nihilo"; it operates with existing language, inherited capacities, a world offering constraints. But it is real creation: before that child spoke that word, the word did not exist; afterward it exists. Creation is not the privilege of declared artists. It is an operation every body performs when reorganising its world in new ways. The body of a mother finding a new way to deal with a rebellious child, created difference in family dynamics. The body of a worker finding a new way to perform arduous labour, created efficiency that did not exist before. Every reorganisation is creation. Every creation is material differentiation. The next section will demonstrate how this reorganisation is a localised response of reason. The third section will demonstrate how conceptual creation produces breadth and reach: trimming, articulating, transforming entire fields. But the root is here, in the body interpreting, selecting, creating difference. Thought is this: body exceeding, unable to remain in automatism, seeking reorganisation when disrupted. It is a costly material practice, rooted in energy the body expends, time it consumes, possibility it opens. It is not transcendence. It is operative intensification of the material.
In this fundamental section, we have consolidated: thought is born of the body that exceeds (1.1). Dualism separating it was an institutionalised fiction (1.2). Contemporary empirical research validates corporalism: somatic markers, enactivism, distributed cognition show that thinking is an embodied material operation (1.3). And Nietzschean genealogy relocalises: the body is reason in operation, material intelligence, capacity to evaluate and create difference (1.4). The following section asks: if thought is the body reorganising itself, how does the body govern this reorganisation? What is reason if not control? It is response. The next section develops reason as response without foundation, as a local operation not transcending, hesitating and revising itself, seeking coherence without guarantee of finding it. The reason emerging from this corporeality is weaker than the sovereign reason of tradition, and it is truer.
2.1. Reason Does Not Govern: It Responds
The Discarded Hierarchical Model
The history of Western reason rests upon a fundamental illusion: that thought can govern. From this illusion derive three figures crystallising the error. The first is the Platonic charioteer, reason as driver governing the two mares of honour and appetite, using them, subordinating them, keeping hierarchy intact. The image is seductive because it offers clarity: there is command, obedience, resulting order. But the model presupposes exactly what is not verified, that reason can be separated from the body it governs, observe it from without, know it, and bend it to its will. The second figure is the Cartesian subject, the "I think" as master of the body, possessor of extension, capable of determining through will what flesh shall do. Here, reason not only governs: it is sovereign. The body becomes instrument, obedient matter, res extensa at the disposal of res cogitans. The corporal machine functions; thought commands. The third is the Kantian legislator, reason capable of imposing a priori laws, categories pre-existing experience giving it form, universal structures escaping the contingency of the lived. In these three figures, an invariant exists: reason is exterior to what it governs, prior to that over which authority is exercised, and its operation is unidirectional.
What these three figures share is an invisible presupposition: that reason and body are two distinct substances, that reason belongs to a superior level of reality, and that governance emerges from outside the governed domain. However, this is false in multiple ways. Reason is not exterior to the body, it is born of it, embedded within it, unable to operate without it. Thought does not precede experience as a legislator precedes the city he founds; it emerges from it, responds to it, is continuously altered by it. And, above all, there is no substantial separation allowing thought to observe the body, know it completely, and order it without suffering retroaction. The hierarchical model is a symbolic fiction projected upon a process functioning in a radically different manner.
Three Real Operative Modes
Reason operates in three modes that empirical reality continuously refutes, refutes because the hierarchical model cannot explain how reason effectively functions once the illusion of sovereignty is set aside. These three modes are not phases reason traverses, nor successive levels of sophistication. They are simultaneous dimensions of any operation thought performs. And in each of them, reason appears as what it is: not governance, but reorganisation having to respond to realities it did not author.
The first mode is reaction. Reaction is mechanical, involuntary response, without deliberative interval. Burn a hand in fire, the hand withdraws before any "rational decision" intervenes. Reflection comes later, when the body has already acted. This is clear; no one denies it. But reaction is not "non-rational" in the sense of being outside the space of reason. Reaction is a level of bodily response not depending on deliberation, yet fully intelligible, fully analysable, fully integrable into a rational narrative. When we understand why the hand withdrew, because fire causes pain, because the body recognises threat, because preservation motivates withdrawal, we offer a rational account of an operation preceding deliberative reason. Reaction is not irrational; it is pre-deliberative, which is an entirely different thing.
The second mode is control. Control is external imposition upon processes that would otherwise follow a different trajectory. When we try not to breathe, we breathe again, because breathing responds to physiological constraints that deliberated will cannot override. When we try not to feel fear, we feel it, because the amygdala is not subordinated to the prefrontal cortex, it is in tense dialogue with it. When we try not to desire, we desire, because desire is bodily, embedded in neural circuits that cannot be "turned off" by rational decree. Control functions not despite this, but because the body resists. A controller functioning without resistance would not be control, it would be simple obedience. But the body never simply obeys. Control is always a process of constraint operating against forces not eliminated, merely contained, redirected, reorganised. And even when we manage to exhibit control over an impulse, what we achieve is not rational sovereignty over raw matter; it is a reorganisation of bodily forces in which reason is one force among others, not an external cause.
The third mode is response. Response is active, immanent, multidirectional. When we think about a problem, in engineering, ethics, or personal relationships, we are not observing a neutral object from outside and applying pre-formulated rules to it. We are involved in a mutual transformation: thought changes the problem (re-formulates it, reconfigures the question), and the problem changes thought (forces revisions, exposes gaps, demands new conceptual constructions). In this operation there is no precedence. It is not that "first we decide principles and then apply them to the case". It is that thought and case are coupled: thought emerges from the attempt to respond to the case, and the case gains intelligibility only when thought relocalises it. Response is not governed by a prior plan; it is a process of search where constraints (the reality of the problem, available resources, commitments we already have) guide thinking, but do not determine it. And because there is no determination, there is always risk: thought can err, refuse adequate responses, remain trapped in formulations preventing seeing the problem clearly. Response is active because it experiments permanently; immanent because it does not come from outside; search because it has no guarantee of success.
Reason As Response
This third characterisation of reason, as response, is the only one standing empirical scrutiny. When we observe what reason effectively does (in contexts of ethical decision, problem-solving, intellectual creativity), we see a process that is active, expending energy, reorganising available operations, seeking new configurations. We see a process that is immanent, not coming from outside, not superimposition of transcendent law, but internal reconfiguration of the concrete agent facing a situation. We see a process that is search, that is, without guarantee, without a complete prior plan, without access to a viewpoint dominating the entire situation. And we see a process that is without guarantee, vulnerable to failure, revocable by subsequent experience.
This last characteristic is crucial. Reason does not govern because it has no access to a viewpoint from which it could position itself to govern. The "view from nowhere" is a myth. All reason operates from somewhere specific, that is, from bodily constraints, personal history, emotional investments, social position, differential access to information. This does not invalidate reason. It invalidates only the myth that reason can be pure observation of an objective structure to which a universal rule is subsequently applied. What reason does is seek adequate responses within real constraints. And because constraints are real, because we cannot step out of our place, because we lack omniscience, because information is always incomplete and decision always premature, reason possesses no guarantee of success. But this does not mean it is not genuinely reason. It means reason is a material, embodied, finite operation seeking without the protection of an absolute foundation.
The error of the three figures (charioteer, master, legislator) is presupposing that lack of absolute foundation renders reason illegitimate, or demands a reform rehabilitating it. The alternative is recognising that reason never needed an absolute foundation because it was never an operation of observation from outside. Reason is active renegotiation with constraints that are real but do not unilaterally determine the response. It is search relying on resources but without guarantee of success. It is finite exercise of finite capacities facing situations never completely understood. And it is sufficient, sufficient to live, think, create, err and correct, construct with others shared senses of reality. It is not the reason of classical logic manuals presupposing premises guarantee conclusions and truth is waiting to be discovered by the attentive observer. It is embodied reason allowing us to be here now talking about embodied reason, an example of the thing functioning, not merely described. This reason built cities we inhabit, medicines curing us, concepts we think with, without ever needing an absolute foundation, because it always operated within the finitude constituting all material operation.
2.2. Genealogy of Rational Control
Plato and Tripartition
The figure of the charioteer does not arise from nowhere. Plato does not invent the illusion of rational control; he recognises it already operating in Athens and offers a philosophical formulation legitimising it. In the Republic, the soul is tripartite: reason, spirit (thymos), appetite. Reason governs through spirit, spirit is the rider, not the horse. This mediation seems to offer nuance, but reinforces hierarchy. Spirit is the noble auxiliary of reason, making it possible for reason not to need brute force to impose itself, but for the soul to reorganise internally according to a pattern of domination. Appetite is not denied, recognised as existing, active, motivating, , but is constantly presented as that needing regulation, that whose nature is disobedience. Plato does not say appetite is bad; he says it is necessarily inferior. And an inferior thing, by nature, cannot govern a superior thing. Logos commands, appetite obeys, and when obeying it is virtue, when disobeying it is vice.
What renders this tripartition particularly effective as an illusion is that it offers an explanation for the failure of rational governance. When appetite refuses to obey, when the soul fails to maintain hierarchy, when the person acts against what he judges best, Plato has an answer: because spirit failed to keep appetite under constraint. Rational governance failed, not because rational governance is conceptually incoherent, but because the individual agent was weak, did not train the soul adequately, allowed appetite to become too strong. The diagnosis blocks the crucial question: does the structure of rational governance make sense at all?
This schema will be transmitted through the entire Western tradition. It does not disappear even when modern science denies the metaphysical premises upon which it rests. The Platonic tripartition, reason/spirit/appetite, mutates into reason/emotion/instinct, then into prefrontal cortex/limbic system/brainstem. The geometric structure maintains itself: there are levels, hierarchy, command from above over the base. And because the structure maintains itself, the error maintains itself also, now clothed in neuroscientific authority, as if the anatomical organisation of the brain confirmed the ontological separation Plato presupposed.
Stoicism: Logos, But Not Domination
There is, however, a detour worth reconstructing, not because it offers a solution, but because it identifies the problem that the hierarchical model cannot even see. Stoicism retains the notion of logos, but relocalises it. For Chrysippus and those coming after, logos is not a faculty of an individual detached from the cosmos; it is rationality immanent to the entire cosmos. Man does not govern passion through superior willpower; man aligns himself with cosmic logos, reorganising his own life not to be in conflict with what is necessary. This differs from Plato because there is no exterior. Logos does not come from outside. It comes from within, because man is himself a manifestation of logos. And therefore, the regulation of passions is not governance of a dominator over dominated; it is participation in a rationality already inhabiting the same body inhabited by passions.
The error of Stoicism, and it is crucial, is presupposing that passions can be eliminated, that organisation according to logos results in apatheia, liberation from suffering through elimination of attachment. The Stoic wise man would reach a state where nothing would disturb him because nothing would move him; everything would be judgement and no passion could have power over judgement. This is still an illusion of governance, merely reformulated: instead of governing through hierarchical force, it governs through cosmic resignation. But this error does not invalidate the fundamental intuition: that reason is immanent, not transcendent. When we step away from this intuition, we return to Plato. When we retain it, we need a reformulation radically more different than history offers. We need to recognise that reason and emotion, thought and body, cannot be separated even conceptually, because there is no rational operation that is not already bodily situated, resounding emotionally, reorganising the agent entirely.
Aristotle: Phronesis As Contextual Reason
Aristotle offers an even more important detour, though rarely retained by traditions emerging from him. He distinguishes theoretical wisdom (sophia) from practical wisdom (phronesis). The first is knowledge of immutable universals, an operation not requiring experimentation, capable of demonstrating the necessary, validating itself through logical rigour. The second is the capacity for judgement in particular circumstances where no universal rule applies mechanically. Phronesis is not deduction of consequences from principles; it is responsive deliberation, adjustment to context, creation of intelligibility for what is singular and unrepeatable. It is that operation capable of being exercised only by someone situated within the context, understanding what is locally at stake, recognising similarity between this case and prior cases without that similarity being formalisable into a rule.
What Aristotle recognises is that there are forms of intelligence not functioning by domination of universal rule over particular case. There are forms functioning by articulation between universal constraints (human nature, common good, virtue) and irreducible singularities (this person, in this situation, with this history, facing this impossible choice). Phronesis is that intelligence. And because it is, reason cannot be presented as the capacity to observe from outside what is particular and order it according to universal law. Practical reason is inside the particular, not above it. It is the exercise of capacities developed through habit, depending on accumulated experience, unable to be taught in rules but only cultivated in practice.
The problem is that Western tradition did not retain phronesis. It retained sophia, the model of geometry, demonstration, universality. And when attempting later to account for practical thought, judgement in context, contingent human action, it attempted to derive it from first principles, universalise it, render it rigorous according to the pattern of sophia. This is like trying to govern with a slide rule: there are situations where the rule does not apply because they demand fine responsiveness to irreducible detail. Medicine is a classic example: there is universal knowledge about the human body, diseases, medicines, but every diagnosis demands phronesis, demands the physician judge how to apply general knowledge to this specific patient with this specific history and this specific presentation. Aristotle does not commit this error. But his solution is rarely retained in full. Modernity inherited the ambition of universality from sophia but lost clarity regarding the limits of that universality.
Dewey: Thought As Intervention
John Dewey offers a late reformulation, particularly clear because operating already within a horizon denying observation from outside. For Dewey, thought is not contemplation of immutable structures. It is intervention in problematic situations. A situation becomes problematic when there is conflict between what we expect and what we find, there is frustration, discontinuity, need for readjustment. And the response is not more rigorous observation allowing us to predict better. It is active experimentation, testing possibilities, verifying what works, learning through failure.
This is crucial: Dewey reverses the relationship between theory and practice. Practice is not the application of theory; theory is the deliberate generalisation of successful practice. Universal laws do not determine how to act; action integrated with experience slowly sediments patterns that can subsequently be formulated as principles, always provisionally, always revisable. This reversal dissolves the problem of rational governance. There is no governance because there is no observation from outside. There is mutual transformation between thinker and situation, theory and practice, expectation and result.
For Dewey, rational justification is not deductive proof forcing consensus by demonstrating universal truth. Rational justification is the capacity to show why a solution works in this situation, what constraints existed, what alternatives were considered, why those failed and this manages to respond to the problem. This is less certainty than deductive proof, but it is also more reliable because anchored in continuous contact with contingent reality. A proof ignoring contingency can be rigorously deduced yet completely useless. A justification explaining why this responds to this is fallible, but radically different from being arbitrary. And it is communicable, precisely because rooted in a concrete situation, it can be traversed again by another agent in a similar situation.
Critical Synthesis
What this genealogy reveals is that the more radically the illusion of observation from outside is dissolved, the more it is recognised that thought is immanent, reason is rooted in body and context, knowledge is always knowledge of someone operating from a specific situation, the less sense it makes to speak of governance. Governance presupposes a governor and a governed, an exterior and an interior, a law preceding that over which it applies. But thought does not function like this. Thought is internal reorganisation responding to constraints that are real but do not unilaterally determine the response.
Plato still sees this as a problem demanding hierarchy to be resolved. Stoicism sees it as a problem demanding alignment with cosmic necessity. Aristotle refuses the problem: there is no need for rational governance because practical intelligence functions without governance. Dewey goes further: there is no observation from outside because there is no "outside". There are only finite agents seeking to respond to situations they never completely master.
If we follow this genealogy to the end, we see that progress is not in the direction of more rational control, more sovereign reason, thought more freed from bodily constraints. Progress is towards increasingly clear understanding that the reason effectively operating is that renouncing the myth of sovereignty and learning to function within real limits that have always constituted it. This is not a defeat of reason. It is maturity. It is the admission that reason was always finite, always embodied, always a search without guarantee, and that this is precisely what renders it capable of thinking.
2.3. Embodied Deliberation
Libet's Discovery: Neural Preparation And Real Inhibition
Benjamin Libet conducted a series of experiments shaking confidence in the model of conscious rational governance. He asked participants to decide to make a simple movement, flexing a finger or wrist, while observing a rapidly moving scene and reporting the exact moment they felt the intention to act. Simultaneously, Libet measured brain activity (electrodes over the motor cortex), seeking the signal preceding movement. The result was disturbing: relevant neural activity, what Libet called "readiness potential", began before the participant reported having the conscious intention to act. There was a lag of about three hundred to four hundred milliseconds. The brain was preparing movement before consciousness "decided" it.
This result was widely interpreted as evidence that conscious decision is illusory, that unconscious processes govern behaviour, that reason arrives too late to matter. But this interpretation commits an error of regime. It confuses different operational levels. What Libet showed is that neural preparation precedes deliberative consciousness. This is true, and not surprising. But Libet also discovered something rarely retained with equal emphasis: there is a temporal window, about one hundred to two hundred milliseconds between readiness potential and real movement, in which inhibition can still operate. The agent can recognise the imminent intention to act and inhibit movement. This inhibition is real. It is measurable. And it is an exercise of practical reason, not top-down governance, but immanent reorganisation of the ongoing operation.
What this signifies is that awareness of unconscious processes is not impotent. Consciousness comes late, true. But it comes early enough to intervene, hesitate, refuse, reorganise. There is no rational sovereignty preceding and governing everything. There is a capacity for interruption, reversal, adjustment operating within pre-existing bodily constraints but genuinely active. Neural preparation is unconscious. Inhibition is conscious. And both are necessary: without preparation, there is nothing to inhibit; without inhibition, preparation runs its course without any reflective interval. The model of rational governance presupposing consciousness governs from the start is refutated. But the model presupposing consciousness is completely impotent is equally inadequate. Truth lies in articulation: unconscious and conscious are partners in a process where each contributes what the other cannot offer.
Emotional Regulation As Embodied Reason
What is true for simple movement is amplified exponentially in contexts of complex emotion and ethical deliberation. When someone feels anger, the amygdala is activated, blood pressure rises, breathing patterns shift, muscles prepare for attack. This entire cascade is automatic. No one "chooses" to feel anger. Emotion happens. And rational tradition offered two equally inadequate responses: either anger must be eliminated (Stoic model of apathy), or anger must be governed through rational willpower (Cartesian model of domination).
But real emotional regulation functions differently. It functions through fine bodily reorganisation. When someone regulates anger, what he frequently does is recognise the pattern of rising tension, in the chest, jaw, hands, and do something with this pattern. He can lengthen breath. Relax shoulders. Name the emotion ("I am angry now"). Leave the situation. Seek to understand why he is angry. None of these operations eliminates emotion by conscious decree. None is observation from outside. All are reorganisations of the bodily pattern itself that is anger, performed from within, taking advantage of constraints already constitutive of the emotional state.
Contemporary neuroscience documented this clearly: effective emotional regulation is not conscious suppression of unconscious emotion. It is modulation through intermediate structures, the medial prefrontal cortex acts not by eliminating the amygdalar signal, but by regulating how the amygdalar signal is integrated with other patterns. It is activation of meaning networks recontextualising the situation, when anger is reinterpreted as protection of an important value, the somatic pattern shifts. It is conscious-unconscious coupling where both are active. Emotion does not vanish; it is reconfigured as a total pattern including the understanding one has of it. It is not governance of emotion by reason. It is reorganisation of a totality including both emotion and reason as simultaneous dimensions.
What this reveals is that reason is not a separate faculty of the body coming to correct illegitimate emotion. Reason is an operation emerging when the body steps back from itself, not as an exterior observer, but as an internal reorganisation creating space for response. When anger slows because breathing slows, because meaning was altered, because the pattern was recognised and recontextualised, in this there is reason operating. It is not governance. It is a dance of multiple corporealities, conscious and unconscious, learning to respond to one another. And because there is learning, because there is possibility of error and correction, because regulation can be improved with practice and reflection, in this too there is reason operating, genuinely embodied.
Hesitation As Reason In Operation
The clearest phenomenon of embodied reason is hesitation. Hesitation is the moment when multiple possible trajectories are still open, where the agent has live contact with indetermination, where response has not been fixed. And hesitation is visceral. When someone hesitates genuinely, not merely intellectually, but with the body in suspense, there is a shift in posture, breathing, rhythm of thought. The body is confused because there are multiple possible responses and none completely overrides the others.
Hesitation is habitually presented as rational weakness, the agent hesitates because lacking clear principles, lacking conviction, because reason failed to perform its clarifying work. But this is a reversal of what occurs. Hesitation is a sign that reason is effectively in operation. When there is absolute clarity, there is frequently rigidity, mechanical application of a rule without contact with the particularity of the case. It is when reason faces the irreducible character of singularity that hesitation arises. To hesitate is to recognise that the situation is incompletely intelligible, that there are values in conflict, that no solution resolves everything, and to continue deliberating despite this. To hesitate is a genuine exercise of practical reason. It is what happens when someone effectively responsible must decide and all options carry a cost.
And hesitation is visceral because no aspect of the agent remains outside it. It is not that reason hesitates while the rest of the body executes. It is that the entire agent is in suspense, cognitive capacities, emotional patterns, bodily dispositions. When hesitation resolves into action, there is global reorganisation, thought clarifies not because descending from a superior plane, but because the entire body found a coherent pattern again. And when action is taken without having resolved hesitation completely, as is frequently the case in circumstances demanding immediate response, the agent continues carrying hesitation, reviewing the decision, open to the possibility of having erred. This is reason without guarantee. It is reason recognising its own finitude, remaining responsive to subsequent experience, unable to offer certainty because never possessing a foundation upon which certainty rested. But it is genuine reason, active, intelligent, and capable of recognising when it erred and reorganising itself in consequence. The capacity to be wrong and to recognise it is the mark of the thinking thing.
2.4. Groundless Reason
The View From Nowhere
The fundamental myth sustaining the entire illusion of rational governance is that of the "viewpoint from nowhere", the idea that it is possible to observe a situation, problem, or ethical dilemma from no specific position, and therefore with access to universal truth uncontained by the observer's perspective. This myth appears in multiple forms. It appears when Descartes claims he can doubt everything except thought itself, as if hyper-bolic doubt could cleanse all contamination of interest, body, and social condition. It appears when Kant proposes categories of understanding as universal pre-conditions of possible experience, as if it were possible to determine a priori structures any rational being must share. It appears when the classical scientist dreams of describing the universe "as it is in itself", independent of the observer, as if the act of observation left no mark, altered nothing observable, required no instruments mediating everything.
The problem lies not in seeking universality. It lies in presupposing universality is accessible from nowhere, that it is possible to obtain universal truth without passing through a particular perspective. All universality effectively existing is constructed from multiple particular perspectives conversing with one another, questioning one another, reorganising into a pattern of coherence shared despite never being deduced from a pre-existing universal foundation.
This is true for science. No physicist observes the universe without instruments mediating observation; without a community of practice validating methods; without a history of questions the community judged relevant; without economic and political constraints determining which questions are fundable. Results are universally valid, that is, any other physicist in any other laboratory can replicate them, , but not because observation is from a neutral place. It is because observation was made from a specific place and described such that others manage to repeat the operation from their specific places. Universality is the convergence of multiple perspectives, not a viewpoint no particular perspective occupied.
Constraints Without Absolute Foundation
What governs reason, then, if there is no absolute foundation? A set of constraints governs that are real, but never totalise into a universal law.
The first constraint is coherence. The things we think cannot contradict one another without something being wrong. If I affirm that "consciousness is merely a property of the brain" and simultaneously that "consciousness cannot be reduced to a property of the brain", there is a conflict needing resolution. This demand for coherence is not a choice; it is a characteristic of intelligibility. An incoherent position is intelligible precisely because we can identify the point where it fails. But coherence offers no absolute foundation. There are multiple coherent positions mutually incompatible. Constraint operates by eliminating possibilities (any position coherent with the affirmation that consciousness is a property of the brain will be incompatible with certain other affirmations), but not by determining univocally what truth is.
The second constraint is efficacy. Ideas must manage to guide action in the world. If a theory says light is purely a wave, but in practice behaves such that we can only build instruments working if we treat it also as a particle, there is a problem between theory and reality needing resolution. This constraint offers no absolute truth, the nature of light is still not completely determined, , but it offers a real criterion: any theory ignoring the dual nature of light will be less effective than a theory integrating it. Efficacy is not truth, but evidence that theory is in good contact with the real.
The third constraint is shareability. Ideas must manage to be communicated to others and receive critique from others not sharing the same presuppositions. If my position is intelligible only to me, only when in a specific emotional state, only in hermetic language someone unversed in tradition cannot follow, then there is a problem. Shareability does not guarantee truth, widely shared positions can all be false, , but guarantees the position was tested against multiple real objections, survived critique, managed to reorganise in response to challenge. A position managing to be shared must possess solidity, not by being proved universally true, but by having resisted real pressure from outside.
Provisional Anti-Nihilism
The absence of an absolute foundation led some philosophers to conclude everything is relativism, no reason can distinguish between rival positions, we are condemned to the arbitrary. This is a hasty conclusion. The absence of an absolute foundation does not signify the absence of real constraints. It signifies constraints are local, provisional, and revisable, not that they are non-existent or all positions are equally good.
An incoherent position fails a real constraint. A theory that is effective fails only if offering illusory efficacy, that is, if managing to work in the laboratory but failing to guide action outside it, or working while someone fails to see the underlying problem. An incommunicable position fails because failing to pass the scrutiny of multiple perspectives. These failures are real. They determine that certain positions must be discarded, certain reformulations are necessary, certain progress was made regarding prior states. What does not exist is a final point. There is no absolute certainty upon which we can rest. There is only permanent negotiation among real constraints never fixing the response univocally. Coherence is demanded, but multiple coherent positions exist. Efficacy is demanded, but rival positions can all be effective. Shareability is demanded, but ideas can be shared without being true, there are well-coherent, highly effective, widely shared ideologies that remain false because not contacting the real.
This is anti-nihilism because recognising real constraints exist, the arbitrary is not an option, reason can distinguish better from worse positions, locally, provisionally, always subject to revision. But it is provisional anti-nihilism because recognising none of these distinctions is final, knowledge is always in process, the intelligibility we achieve is local, valid in this context, for these agents, with these presuppositions, and may be insufficient in another context, for other agents, when presuppositions shift.
Transition: What Is Thought For?
If reason does not govern, if there is no absolute foundation in which to rest, if constraints operating are real but never fix the response univocally, what then does thought do? What is such vulnerable, finite reason useful for, deprived of guarantee? This question addresses the heart of the matter this chapter pursues. The answer begins to clarify when we recognise thought is not a faculty exercised at the margin of life. Thought is an operation part of life, part of how finite agents manage to exist in a world they did not make, in relation to other agents they do not dominate, confronted with situations they do not master completely.
If thought exists, it is because there is something thought can do. And what it can do is create. To create does not mean building from nothing; it means reorganising what exists into new configurations that were not given. When an agent thinks about a problem, what he does is reorganise the problem conceptually, re-formulates it, exposes aspects that were not visible, constructs new connections between elements already known. When an agent thinks about himself, what he does is create himself, not from nothing, but from the body he is, the history constituting him, others surrounding him. When communities think together, what they do is create cultures, shared meaning systems, action norms, reality interpretations that did not exist before.
That which thought creates is meaning. But meaning is not an immaterial thing floating above reality. Meaning is a material operation, modes of organising energy, structuring encounters between agents, transmitting information across generations. When someone understands something, there is material change in the brain, new synaptic connections, new activation patterns. When a community shares meaning, there is transformation in material practices, how people build, exchange, live together.
Thus thought, being embodied, finite, without absolute foundation, is not impotent. It is a generator of meaning, and meaning possesses real power.
3.1. Thinking Is Not Discovering: It Is Creating
The majority tradition of Western thought operated under a presupposition shaping centuries of interpretation: that thinking is copying. Plato accessed eternal Forms. Aristotle abstracted essence from the particular. Empiricism reproduced sensory impressions. Descartes possessed clear and distinct ideas of things in themselves. Kant synthesised representations conforming to things in themselves, the inaccessible noumenon. This entire lineage presupposed a double ontological structure: there is a thing in itself prior to description; thought accesses that thing or copies that reality; truth is conformity between copy and original, representation and represented. It is a homology model: the idea "reflects" the thing as a mirror reflects an image. This model, however, fails when examined in real operation.
Thought does not copy, it produces articulation. Articulation is an operation trimming the real in a new way, which did not exist before. Consider the paradigmatic case opening an entire intellectual civilisation: Darwin and the conceptualisation of natural selection. The world prior to 1859 contained living organisms that died. It contained descendants differing from parents. It contained an abundance of life relative to available food, creating struggles for survival among organisms. All these facts were observable and known, prior biologists knew variation within species, knew death, knew the struggle for existence. But the world prior to Darwin did not contain "natural selection". This is not a trick of precarious description, it is a precise ontological affirmation: the conceptual operation we designate "natural selection" did not exist. Darwin created that operation. The concept of natural selection is a new articulation, a relation between random variation, differential reproduction, accumulation of small changes over generations, producing a unifying explanation for dispersed facts. He did not discover the structure; he produced it as a difference in the mode of understanding.
This required rejecting prior frameworks. To function, natural selection needed there to be no final cause (telos immanent to life, as Aristotle had postulated). It needed there to be no intelligent design (as Christian theology taught). It needed to install contingency in the heart of the vital process, variation is random relative to organism needs; death is a blind event, neither punishment nor purpose. These negations were not "findings" Darwin extracted observing facts, they were conceptual operations Darwin performed for the articulation of natural selection to function. The concept is an operation differentiating the field in which it intervenes. After Darwin, returning was impossible. Prior concepts, gene, organism, species, adaptation, all had to be re-articulated as a function of natural selection. All subsequent biology was reorganisation around that new operator.
This occurs in all domains where thought functions. When Freud produced the conceptual operation of the "unconscious", he did not discover a brain region no one had found. He produced difference: the hypothesis that psychic disturbances have causes not accessible to the subject's consciousness, that thought operates with contents conscious thought does not know or refuses. When Wittgenstein produced the operation of "language games", he did not find a hidden linguistic structure. He produced difference: the hypothesis that there is no single language, but multiple uses of language, each with its own rules, each functioning differently according to the context of use. Each of these conceptual operations radically reorganised how the domain was thought after its creation.
Creation is not fantasy without constraints. The real exercises a continuous veto over articulations we produce. A biology denying heredity fails, the real vetoes because organisms really inherit characteristics from progenitors. A medicine ignoring physiology fails, the real vetoes because bodies really possess a material structure restricting which interventions work. An argument violating non-contradiction fails, the real vetoes because a proposition cannot be true and false simultaneously in the same sense. Constraint is real. But constraint does not determine univocally which articulation is necessary. Multiple different articulations can satisfy the same material constraints. This is the mark of creation: operation under constraints vetoing impossibilities, but leaving open a multiplicity of working possibilities. Darwin was not the only conceptualisation that could have been created regarding variation and heredity, but it was created, worked, reorganised the field. This is creation, not discovery: it was not "there", waiting, expecting the mind to apprehend it. It was made, as a bridge is made, using materials the real offers, to cross the abyss the real places.
The difference between new thought and daily thought is not a difference of ontology, it is not that one is "discovery" and the other "pure invention". The difference is of amplitude and articulation. A child speaking Portuguese knows how to operate language, knows "cat" designates certain entities in the world and not others. This is already articulation: there is a trim between "cat" and "non-cat", an operation establishing difference. But when Newton produced the concept of gravity, he produced an articulation of vastly greater amplitude, reconfiguring how we understand the totality of celestial and terrestrial movements. When Einstein produced the conceptualisation of relativity, he produced an articulation absorbing Newton's as a particular case, but reorganising understanding of space, time, mass, energy. Each is the creation of difference. What shifted between the child speaking and Einstein is not that one discovered and the other invented, both create, both articulate. What shifted was the scale of reorganisation the articulation produces.
The consequence of this understanding is that the illusion disappears that there could be "pure discovery" not implying trimming, selection, perspective. All perception is already perception of something as something, perspective selecting which aspects are relevant. All knowledge is embodied knowledge, made from a specific body in a specific situation. This does not render knowledge relative in the sense of arbitrary, it renders it situated. And situated knowledge, recognising its position, manages to be more robust than that denying its situation. The physicist recognising that his measurements depend upon specific instruments, a specific frame of reference, a historical moment when instruments were built, that physicist manages to compensate for the limitations of his instrumentation. He manages to dialogue with physicists using different instruments and agree upon patterns transcending any single instrument. The philosopher recognising he thinks in Portuguese, inherits Western tradition, is the product of received education, that philosopher manages to learn from philosophies emerging from different traditions, incorporate alternative perspectives, produce thought that is his without being isolated from the rest of human thought. Conceptual creation is precisely this capacity to think something new within constraints the situation offers.
3.2. The Concept as Constrained Gesture
Philosophy is the creation of concepts, such is the central thesis structuring the entire operation of this paragraph. Deleuze and Guattari formulated it thus: "The concept is that which renders thinkable the un-thought." Not as application of pre-existing structure to new contents, that would still presuppose structure (the form of thought) is given in advance. But as production of that rendering it possible for something never before thought to be thought now. The concept is not representation of a thing in itself. It is not access to transcendent truth. It is creation: instituting differentiation in the field of the thinkable. The philosopher is a creator of concepts just as the painter is a creator of visual sensations and the musician a creator of sonorous sensations. This framework permits understanding what occurs when reason not merely processes given information, but produces articulation reconfiguring how a problem can be conceived.
Conceptualisation mobilises Deleuze and Guattari with precision specified by differentiation. What is retained: First, that conceptual creation is an operation not describing, but doing. The concept is not a name applied to a pre-existing thing, its institution as a concept reconstitutes how the domain is thinkable. When Darwin instituted "natural selection" as a concept, he did not describe a mechanism already operating, he created a new mode of articulating vital processes altering radically how subsequent biological changes are understood. Second, that this creation occurs in immanence. Thought does not hover over the real from a transcendental position, it operates in its interior. The concept emerges from a concrete problem: a situation disrupting, a question existing concepts cannot resolve, a gap forcing reorganisation. When Kant produced the concept of the thing in itself, he did so because representationalist tradition faced a problem: if knowledge is representation, how can we access what representation represents? The Kantian answer, that we cannot, that an insurmountable limit exists between phenomenon and noumenon, is conceptual creation emerging from disruption of the prior position. Third, that all conceptual creation is material practice. It involves the body of the thinker (fatigue, concentration, physiological needs interrupting the flow of mental work). It involves language, the concept is not pure thought, but articulation in words, sentences, arguments constructed in a specific language with a specific genealogy. It involves time, creation is not instantaneous, it is a process maturing. It involves encounters, with texts of predecessors, critiques of contemporaries, institutions enabling or obstructing production.
What is rejected: First, the "plane of immanence" as a transcendental structure. In Deleuze, there is a notion that concepts are created upon a "plane of immanence", a metaphysical structure as foundation of philosophical creation. Here we reject that notion. The "plane" upon which thought operates is not a metaphysical structure, it is a material and historical condition. They are linguistic practices, educational institutions, sedimented intellectual traditions, natural languages with their genealogies, none transcendental because none a priori universal. They are products of history, susceptible to change, partial by definition. Second, the "plane of consistency" as a smooth space. Deleuze establishes a distinction between striated space (constrained, institutionalised, hierarchical) and smooth space (open, dispersed, free). He suggests philosophical thought functions as smooth space, without rigid constraints. Here we reject that notion forcefully. Thought operates always in striated conditions, linguistic constraints (the language in which I think possesses its own structure limiting and enabling certain operations), institutional constraints (university, academy, knowledge communities possess hierarchies governing what is publishable, commentable, legitimate), material constraints (there is no thought without resources, time, sufficiently fed and secure bodies). All intellectual freedom we conquer is conquered within and against these constraints, not outside them. We wished for smooth space and discovered real thought operation demands friction, resistance, materiality. Third, conceptual creation as "event" in the Deleuzian sense. Deleuze understands events as irruptions of the virtual into the actual, impersonal processes exceeding any subject traversed by them. Here we reject that impersonality clearly. Creation is embodied practice, emerging from a specific position, specific body, specific history. It possesses a personal dimension, the person creating assumes responsibility for the created concept, can be critiqued, obliged to revise. This does not mean it is private property (untransmissible), the created concept is precisely that capable of being shared, published, critiqued by others. But creation possesses personal origin. Darwin created natural selection, and is responsible for that creation, not because "possessing" a private idea, but because he articulated it in a new way and defended it against critiques. Deleuze's virtual dissolved this place; we retain it as a necessary condition of real creation.
Conceptual operation unfolds in three distinct movements rarely occurring in pure isolation, but analytically discriminable. Each movement is selection, choice of which aspects of reality become relevant, which suspended. No selection is neutral. All operate under constraints addressed in the following section.
First: the trimming. Thought does not work with totality, it must trim. When I ask "what is a person?" to answer I must trim between body, consciousness, rights, genealogy, life narrative. Each trim is selection of a specific aspect and temporary suspension of other aspects. Selection is not arbitrary, determined by function: what makes work the answer I shall give. When a biologist asks "what is an organism?" she trims physiology, genetic structure, self-replication capacity, suspends questions of consciousness or moral rights a philosopher might bring. When an artist visits the same living being, he trims form, colour, movement, light patterns, suspends biological categorisations. No trim is "the" correct trim in an absolute sense. All are valid because all function in specific contexts, allowing thought, action, communication. But some trims fail, leading to blindness where vision was necessary, imprisoning where freedom was necessary. Evaluation of a trim demands examining what it does: which realities it renders intelligible, which invisible, what is the price of selection. A trim suspending power (defining "person" merely by individual consciousness) can function well as a definition for philosophy of mind, but fails for political analysis, because a person is always a person in power relations. Trimming creates the field of visibility. But creates blindness also, that which is trimmed becomes invisible as figure. The following operation attempts to recover that absence.
Second: articulation. Having trimmed specific elements, thought relates them, establishes connections among them. A child learning categories learns articulation: "apple" is not an isolated property, it is a relation between form, colour, flavour, origin (comes from apple tree), use (eaten), history (Adam and Eve in Christian tradition). Articulation multiplies, each element gains intelligibility through relation. "Chair" is articulation between form, height, solidity, functionality (one can sit), context of use (in an office, living room, cathedral). "Social class" articulates economic position with education, access, consumption, horizon of possibilities, power relations, and each element is intelligible only through others. Articulation transforms trim into web. But web is always partial, there are always possible relations unnamed. Articulation can be more or less rich (a child articulating "apple" merely as "sweet thing" articulates poorly; a botanist articulating apple with evolutionary genealogy, pollination, artificial selection articulates abundantly). Articulation can also be more or less fecund, generating more or fewer new questions and action possibilities. An articulation closing (saying "it is this and finished") is intellectual death. An articulation opening (saying "it is this AND this is linked to that and that brings with it this other") generates thought. Evaluation of an articulation demands asking: how many connections does it reveal? how many new questions does it allow placing? the richer relations are, the more fecund the operation.
Third: transformation. This is the most demanding movement because affecting how all prior concepts need to be re-thought. Darwin did not merely trim "variation" (already a known category) and not merely articulate it with differential selection, he transformed all biology because introducing a new operator: natural selection functions without design, without teleology, without essence. This transformation required rejecting entire frameworks (divine creation, fixed essences, immanent telos). Changed how everything subsequently had to be thought. When someone offers a transformative concept, what was invisible becomes visible, not because reality changed (variations always existed), but because the intelligible structure in which reality is thought changed. Transformation is equally selection, choosing which questions to answer and which to leave suspended. But transformation is more ambitious than trimming or articulation: not merely selecting, reorganising the entire field. Demands intellectual courage because it is a destructive operation, destroying sedimented categories that appeared necessary. Demands validation also, transformation confirms itself only when managing to absorb the prior without destroying what in it was true. Darwin destroyed the idea of fixed essence, but retained (and reconfigured) all nature observation prior biology accumulated. Transformation is not pure negation. It is reorganisation such that the prior gains new sense within the new structure.
The selectivity inherent to thought is not a defect, it is a necessary condition of its operation. No thought is a perspective from nowhere. Every trim is selective: choosing which aspects of reality are relevant to the problem in question. A biologist and a poet see the same animal. The biologist selects physiology, genetics, geographical distribution, evolutionary adaptations. The poet selects form, movement, presence, vulnerability, fur light pattern. Both selectivities are legitimate, functioning in their specific contexts and serving specific purposes. Multiple trims are possible for the same domain. But not all function as valid modes of conceptual creation. Constraint by the real is intransigent. A biology denying organisms inherit characteristics from progenitors fails, the real vetoes because replication and heredity are active properties of living systems. A medicine ignoring physiology fails, the real vetoes because bodies possess material structure restricting which interventions are possible and effective. A philosophical system contradicting itself fails because violating the logical constraint of non-contradiction any language presupposes to function. Constraint is interior to the process of conceptual construction. Concerns how the difference articulated manages to "function" in real practice. An idea functions when allowing successful predictions, effective actions, communication with other thought operators. The concept as gesture is a constrained operation: constrained by matter, history, position of creator, but not determined univocally by these constraints. There is always a space of freedom, space of multiplicity. The same material situation can originate several viable responses. But not all are equally viable. The real systematically vetoes those failing to function. And functioning signifies: managing to operate, communicate, perpetuate itself in subsequent thought practice.
3.3. Creation in Act
Creation occurs, not as a rare exception of privileged geniuses, but as a continuous operation of thought. Darwin exemplifies conceptual creation in its maximum degree of reorganisation. He was not a chemist (did not discover a hidden molecule). Was not a geneticist (Mendel, needing to be rediscovered, discovered laws of heredity Darwin did not fully know). Darwin was a conceptual creator, produced the operation of "natural selection" previously non-existent in intelligible space. For this, convergence of multiple elements was necessary. There were empirical observations: variation within species, struggles for survival, heredity, extinction of old forms. There was reading of Malthus on population. There was a five-year voyage on the Beagle saturating his thought with concrete cases of adaptation and variation. But there was also need for a conceptual leap: the hypothesis that no teleological design governs changes, that the struggle for existence itself functions as selection operator, that adaptation is the result of accumulating small differences generation after generation, not a pre-existing programme. This leap was not "given" in observed facts, facts offered constraints the hypothesis had to satisfy, but did not determine univocally that that hypothesis was necessary. Creation was real and the result was radical reorganisation of the biological field: impossible for subsequent biologists to turn back, all had to accept natural selection operates without design and reorganise all understanding of gene, organism, species, adaptation as a function of this operation.
Artistic creation demonstrates the same operation in a different domain. An artist does not "express an interior", a romantic illusion persisting in our language and categories. An artist reorganises materials, sounds, colours, words, gestures, in a new way. A symphony is not a copy of composer emotions translated into sonorous vibration (as romantics imagined). It is an operation producing difference in the sensible field. People hearing the symphony (true presence of live sound) experience new capacities: capacity to feel tonal modulations never felt before, capacity to be in space transformed by sonorous presence, capacity to be with others in a synchronisation music performs. A painting does not "express painter's inner vision", it is a material operation (applying pigment to surface according to specific patterns) creating difference in how light, form, colour can be experienced. This is no less real than Darwin, creation equally real, equally constrained (painting must function as visual operation to be painting; must produce difference in how one sees to be artistic creation). Difference lies in domain and medium, instead of biological domain with concepts, sensible domain with sensations. But the operation of creating difference is identical.
Everyday thought performs the same operation on a smaller scale. Deliberation is not discovery of correct action, it is creation of difference non-existent before. An adolescent questioning authority previously accepted automatically created difference, disrupted the habitual regime where authority was absorbed without examination. A worker articulating injustice in an invisible situation created difference, rendered visible what was sedimented as natural. A child asking "why do people lie?" created difference, brought thought to a problem previously non-existent on her horizon. Every person is continuously creating, differentiating, articulating, not merely philosophers and artists. The child learning to speak differentiates from automatism of sounds, produces language. The adolescent learning to read differentiates from pure perception, manages to operate written signs. The worker learning a trade differentiates from incompetence, manages to articulate gestures in sequences producing results. No one is a mere passive recipient of contents, all are continuously reorganising their own thinking.
The embodied conceptual metaphor offers a key to understanding how this creation functions. Lakoff and Johnson, whose research in Metaphors We Live By remains fundamental, showed thought operates through bodily rooted metaphors. Not ornamental metaphors we could eliminate if "objective", fundamental conceptual structures. "Understanding is seeing" (comprehension assimilates to vision, "I see your point", "the situation becomes clear"). "More is up" (quantity assimilates to height, "prices are up", "population grew"). "Time is motion" (duration assimilates to spatial trajectory, "time runs", "future approaches"). These metaphors do not decorate language, structure how we think. A person saying "I am down" conceptually structures depression as a fall, a low state. The same person can be aided by simple linguistic reorganisation: reorganising understanding as "I am in a challenging period" changes selectivity, ceases to be a fall to become confrontation with an obstacle needing overcoming. This is not "merely language", real change in how one understands and how body responds. Emotional regulation is reorganisation of conceptual metaphor. Conceptual creation is always already reorganisation of bodily rooted metaphors. Darwin created a new metaphor: "struggle for survival", "natural selection", metaphors reorganising how life is understood (not harmony, not design, but confrontation where inadequate forms disappear). Wittgenstein created the metaphor of "language games", showing language is not a single system with universal rules, but multiple practices where each practice possesses its own rules (as each game possesses its own rules: chess does not follow football rules). Each new metaphorical creation is conceptual creation, reorganisation of how it is possible to think.
This is the regime of thought in operation. Not discovery of pre-existing truths. Not arbitrary invention without constraints. It is creation: operation under constraints vetoing impossibilities, but leaving open a multiplicity of possible solutions. Creation is a practice of the thinking body, embodied, situated, finite. But capable of functioning, communicating, reorganising how an entire domain is thinkable.
3.4. Situated Philosophy
All philosophy is situated. There is no thought from nowhere, no view from nowhere from which one could think without constraints of position. The place from where one thinks forms part of that which one thinks. This is a materialist fact, not an epistemological defect to be overcome by correct method. Each philosopher thinks with a specific body, a body fatiguing, needing food, ageing, possessing sensibilities and limitations. Each philosopher thinks in a specific language, Portuguese, Greek, German, Mandarin, each with its own genealogy, sedimented categories, possibilities and impossibilities that linguistic structure authorises or forbids. Each philosopher thinks in a specific historical moment, a sixteenth century where Descartes could believe deductive method from evident truths could found knowledge; a nineteenth century where Darwin could mobilise variation as a concept because the idea of immutable species was shaken; a twenty-first century where whoever thinks inherits centuries of critique of these positions. Each philosopher thinks from a specific social position, free male citizens of ancient Greece (Plato), Protestant pastors in eighteenth-century Prussia (Kant), twenty-first-century Afrodiasporic women articulating interstitial thought to various traditions. Situation is the conditional of thought.
But conditionality is not determinism. Situation is not a prison from which to escape. It is the condition from which one manages to operate. True, a philosopher thinking in Portuguese is constrained by the structure of Portuguese, cannot think certain things Mandarin or Greek manage to think, can think other things English cannot. This is real restriction. But real enablement also: there are modes of thinking Portuguese authorises permitting proper articulations. The same position conditioning enables. From a specific situation, thought manages to displace itself, study other traditions thinking differently, find contradictions in own thought forcing revision, understand why a position different from its own made sense in a different context, learn from that understanding. The plasticity of thought is real. A philosopher is not trapped in situation, manages to widen thought horizon through encounter with alterity (other traditions, critiques, experiences). The consequence is distrust of immediate universality claims, affirming "this is true universally" without attending to the position of speech. When someone declares universal truth, the question runs: truth for whom, from what position, in what context, based upon which presuppositions? This does not relativise thought, contextualises it. Recognises the specific place from which universality claim is made. And permits evaluating whether that claim manages to function beyond origin context, if managed to be understood by those not sharing initial presuppositions, resist critiques from other positions, absorb and learn from them.
Universality is not a starting point (transcendental presupposition Kant believed possible, independent of history and experience). It is the result of a practice that generalises, that works. How is universality constructed? Through communication, with oneself at a different time (rereading, retraction, development of a prior idea), with other thinkers (commentary, critique, dialogue). Through testing, submitting idea to critique, expecting objections, seeing how idea functions applied to un-anticipated cases. Through revision, recognising error when pointed out, correcting, reconstructing. Through replication, another manages to reproduce result, finds same steps, arrives at same conclusions. A thesis remaining private (makes sense only to me, you cannot understand because not sharing my inexplicable presuppositions) is not a philosophical thesis, it is internal monologue. A thesis managing to traverse multiple contexts, understood by different traditions and communities, resisting critiques from diverse positions, incorporating learning, that thesis developed universality. Managed to communicate, refine through critique, particularise in different contexts without losing intelligibility. This is work. Not work of pure mind, work of body thinking, writing, publishing, presenting, hearing critique, returning to problems thought resolved. The implication is all philosophy recognising its situationality manages to aim for universality better than that beginning from pretence of nowhere.
The illusion of the transcendental subject, that it is possible to think from nowhere, from no perspective, no body, weakens thought because denying real conditions of operation. When a philosopher affirms "I am impartial, objective, free of prejudices, speak from pure reason", that philosopher is denying exactly that he is a situated body, speaking a specific language with a specific genealogy, benefiting from a social position permitting study. Pretence of transcendentality masks true situation. When a philosopher assumes situation, "I speak as a woman in a masculine tradition", "I speak as colonised inheriting coloniser language", "I speak as a person benefiting from educational privilege many lack", that philosopher manages to think position better because not denying it. Manages to offer more robust universality because submitting own perspective to critical examination. Manages to learn from critique because recognising position is not whole truth, specific perspective capable of being complemented, corrected, expanded by other perspectives.
The concept, therefore, is a constrained gesture. We resume the operator of the preceding chapter: gesture is a material operation producing difference. The thinker's gesture is an operation producing concept, difference in the field of the thinkable. Constrained (not invention without limits, not fantasy without real veto) but real (not copy of pre-existing essence, but creation of new articulation). All conceptual creation is an operation of the body thinking, localised, situated, finite body. Body fatiguing, ageing, capable of dying before completing thought. Body inheriting traditions, speaking learned language, existing in a history not chosen. From this body, in this situation, with these constraints, thought manages to aim for universality, not as transcendence of condition, but as continuous expansion of reach through communication, critique, revision.
This closes the third section: to think is to create difference. But a question remains open. If thought is constrained creation, is truth relative? Arbitrary? Fallible such that confidence is never gained in anything? How is it possible to distinguish well-made thought from pretty illusion? How is it possible to say one conceptual articulation is better than another if both are situated creations, both built by specific bodies, both operating under constraints? The following chapter answers this question. Truth is not discovered, it is constructed. Construction does not mean arbitrariness, means operation, work, criteria governing whether construction works. Not relative because the real vetoes articulations incompatible with how it operates. Not arbitrary because multiple constraints converge to restrict space of viable possibilities. Not fallible in the sense of "never resulting in quality", revisable in the sense of "can always be improved". And what would compete with this open reason, this constructed truth, this worked universality? The answer is God, an operator functioning as totalisation pretending to close what reason leaves open, what thought leaves under suspicion, what knowledge recognises as provisional and revisable. Constructed truth does not authorise God. This is what the following chapter demonstrates, not destroying the concept of God (not rational refutation of religious belief), but showing that in the ontology this book constructs, God emerges as an operator of negation, not affirmation.
Thought does not discover what already existed, it creates what comes to exist because it was thought.
