Introduction to Theme I
Between a stimulus and a response, a body may open an interval in which more than one continuation becomes possible; the interruption remains bodily, yet it changes the operation by allowing a gesture to persist beyond the immediate situation and become available to others.
Chapter 1 establishes the interval through which the body suspends an automatic response. Chapter 2 follows gesture into a material difference that can persist before naming and become available for inscription. Chapter 3 reaches speech, where differences are inscribed and related within a shared symbolic field capable of reorganising subsequent action.
The passage from instinct to symbol introduces no separation from matter. It increases the range of material operations through retention and recognition, followed by transmission. The human emerges within this contingent expansion, as a body able to resume the effects of its gestures and alter the conditions under which another response becomes possible.
