Consciousness Arrives Later: an OEC analysis of consciousness as an emergent bodily regime, distributed subjectivity and ongoing self-modulation.

1.1. Consciousness Arrives Later

The chronological inversion that must be established is radical and opposes philosophical common sense: prior to any reflective consciousness, prior to any self-observation, there exist complete operative processes that functionally organise the body and keep it alive without there ever existing an "I" that observes them from without, directs them, or possesses knowledge of them. The newborn infant, in its first month of life, acts with a sensory-motor precision that astonishes any observer steeped in mentalist prejudices. The blind hand of the neonate touches the mother's breast, retracts, touches again, perfects the contact, not through conscious learning, not through instruction, not through comprehension. It is an exact coordination that the body performs without the existence of reflection. The child's body does not think while acting; it coordinates itself. The orientation of the head towards sounds, the fixation of gaze, the suction movement, all of this is a masterful sensory-motor operation of a system that does not yet possess reflectivity.

The child has affects: fear that contracts muscles when a loud sound abruptly breaks forth, desire that propels the body forward when hunger becomes urgent, comfort that relaxes the musculature when embraced by the mother. These affects are not experiences that the infant "has" internally and then "observes" as its own properties, they are operations through which the body reconfigures itself integrally and immediately. When the baby experiences fear, it does not "feel fear as an interior experience" and then "think about fear reflectively", the body transforms immediately: heart rate accelerates, respiratory pattern alters, musculature tenses, pupils dilate. This is affect in pure functioning: a sensory-motor reorganisation of the entire body in an adaptive direction without self-observation. Emotion organises precise behaviours without the body, at this initial stage, being capable of saying to itself "I am afraid, I am frightened, this is my emotion." Reflective knowledge comes later. Affective operation comes first. Memory already operates in the body, the body retains response patterns (the progressive refinement of suction as weeks pass, the differentiated recognition of familiar versus stranger faces at six months), learns to anticipate (the child turning towards the mother upon hearing her voice even before seeing her), reconstructs motor pathways through systematic repetition, all of this occurring long before there exists a "consciousness of memory", long before the subject can observe itself and say "I remember this, this which happened to me is a memory." And language, as the previous chapter extensively demonstrated, already constitutes the subject biologically, already folds it inward into the symbolic field from birth, already orientates and organises it according to structures of meaning that the infant did not choose and does not rationally comprehend, long before the subject learns to say "I" in the first person and imagines itself to be thinking or to be the intelligent source of the language sustaining it.

Where, then, does consciousness enter? At what moment does the material organisation of the body become reflective? The answer is not substantial (it is not: "when the observing homunculus appears"), it is operative. Consciousness arrives when the complexity of this material organisation reaches a critical threshold of self-reference. It is not a new neurological apparatus that suddenly emerges, it is a new relational configuration of processes that already existed in isolation or in a partially integrated state. Imagine three functioning systems: the sensory-motor system (coordinating movement and perception), the affective system (organising emotional responses), and the memory system (registering patterns). Initially they operate semi-isolatedly. Consciousness emerges when these systems begin to interact intensely, when each comes to be modelled by the others in a circulating manner. The affective system influences memory (emotional associations), memory constrains perception (expectations based on experience), perception feeds affect (recognition generates pleasure or distress). When these couplings reach a certain density of interaction, something new emerges: the possibility that the body speaks of itself, listens to itself, evaluates what is happening. The result is not a magical substance, not a spirit descending to animate: it is the sensation of observation, "I am the body that sees, that acts, that feels", the lived impression that there is a central theatre where everything converges, an observer that witnesses. But this impression is a posterior effect, a product of integration, not an antecedent condition. Consciousness does not ground coordination, it arrives when coordination reaches sufficient complexity to fold back upon itself, to mirror itself, to answer to itself.

This point can be demonstrated by contraposition, by testing rigorously what occurs when consciousness absents itself. Anaesthesia does not kill the body: the body continues to function (metabolism remains active, healing continues, automatic respiration proceeds, spinal reflexes persist). What anaesthesia deactivates is precisely that operative regime of reflective self-modulation, that dense integration between systems that produces the sensation of observation. When the patient awakens after deep anaesthesia, they invariably affirm: "I felt nothing. It was instantaneous." Why? Because, in fact, for consciousness there was no interval, not because consciousness hibernated in a recess, but because that regime of self-reflection was inactive, turned off. The body operated. Consciousness did not. Analogously, deep coma, a state where the interruption of consciousness is more prolonged. The body remains alive, physiological processes maintain themselves, neurological structures remain intact (at least in initial phases), but reflective organisation halts. And in infantile development we witness an absolutely complete operative functioning prior to reflectivity: the three-month-old child smiles in response to faces, coordinates increasingly precise movements, differentiates familiar faces from strangers, reacts affectively to tones of voice, all of this without reflection, all of this before any "I that knows it is a child", before any "I think that I think". The progression of cerebral and psychological development is not the appearance of a new magical substance (consciousness, spirit), it is the gradual construction of a capacity for self-modulation, an increasing integration between systems, an increase in the density of couplings that allow the body to answer to itself.

The inverted thesis, that consciousness is a posterior effect, is not an ungrounded philosophical speculation. It awaits and demands precise demonstration by the chapters that follow, memory as the continuous reinscription of the body, social language as interpersonal binding. But already in this section it is possible to affirm with confidence: that which philosophical tradition placed at the absolute beginning as a self-evident first principle (consciousness as the irreducible foundation of everything) is, ontologically and evolutionarily, at the end of a long series of material operations that precede and radically condition it. The neonate possesses all processes except reflectivity. The person under anaesthesia possesses all processes except reflective integration. The comatose person possesses all processes except self-modulation. This is not coincidence, it is evidence. Consciousness is not the cradle in which the body rests, it is the late fruit of material maturation, the unpredicted outcome of complexity that has reached a critical density of self-coupling.

1.2. Genealogy of Consciousness-As-Substance

The fiction that consciousness is a substance, a res cogitans separate from res extensa, a soul distinct from body, a spirit irreducible to matter, is not an arbitrary error committed by a few careless philosophers, nor an occasional misstep. It is the sedimentation of a structural error that crosses and organises the entire philosophical tradition from the seventeenth century to the present, infecting even thinkers who believe themselves to have broken free from it. The error has a clear genealogy, and tracing this genealogy is essential if we are not to reproduce, involuntarily, the substantivist premises we seek to dismantle.

The Cartesian confusion: appearing and ontological being

Descartes grounds his entire metaphysics upon the cogito, the proposition "I think, therefore I am". The phrase is famous to the point of banality, repeated in schoolrooms, converted into the motto of modern reason, inscribed on wall plaques. What is rarely subjected to rigorous analysis is precisely this: what does the cogito establish? What kind of demonstration is this? To what does one commit oneself when enunciating it?

Descartes presupposes that the act of thinking establishes the existence of a thinking substance, res cogitans, a thinking thing, an entity whose essential property is thought. The conclusion is inferred as necessary: if there is thought, there is something that thinks; if there is thought, there is a thing that thinks; if there is a thing that thinks, that thing is a substance separate from spatial extension. But examining the logical structure of this proposition rigorously: the act of thinking (or more properly, the act of enunciating "I am thinking", the act of observing oneself thinking) is merely that, an act, an event, an occurrence, not a revelation of an underlying substance that persists independently.

The enunciation "I think" does not establish that a thing exists that thinks, as a minimal logical analysis would reveal. It establishes only that at this moment thinking is occurring, enunciation is occurring, reflection is happening. But occurrence is not proof of substance. That lightning flashes does not prove that a flash-entity exists separate from the electromagnetic process; that a wave swells does not reveal a wave-essence distinct from the moving water; that thinking happens does not reveal a thinking thing as an entity irreducible to the material operation of thinking.

Enunciation, as the previous chapter demonstrated, is a material operation of language, a symbolic materiality that reorganises the body through neuronal patterns, chemical oscillations, acoustic vibrations. It is not the expression of an interiorly thinking substance that would subsist independently of language, that would remain intact if language were to vanish. Without the body, without sensory-motor coupling, without the evolutionary history that equipped that body to discriminate signals and formulate responses, there is no thought. Without language, without the symbolic registers that the body learned to manipulate, there is no reflective thought. Thought is a systemic operation involving multiple levels, biological, affective, linguistic, and not the emergence of an exclusive property of an immaterial dimension.

The fundamental error of Descartes is categorically double. First: confusing the order of appearing with the order of ontological being. Consciousness appears to itself as first, phenomenologically it is exactly thus, it is the first thing offered when one observes, when one turns one's gaze inward, precisely because it is a phenomenon of reflection, because it is the observation of the observer. But this phenomenological priority in appearing is an optical illusion of perspective, a necessary effect of one who always observes from within what is observed. Ontologically, considering the material reality of the biological situation, consciousness is chronologically posterior to the organisation of the bodily processes that produce it, to the evolution of nervous systems, to the sedimentation of learnings that the body incorporated across generations. Descartes confused: "appears as first to me when I observe" with "is first in ontological reality", an elementary confusion that nevertheless erected the substantial separation between mind and body marking all subsequent dualism, against which Western philosophy still struggles without success.

Second error: the presumption that the enunciation of thought proves the existence of a thing. Logic supposes that every action demands an agent, but modern physics has shown that there are processes without agents, reorganisations without authors, events without initiators. A crystal grows. A chemical reaction occurs. A wave propagates. None of these processes requires a substance that "does" the process: the process is the thing. Analogously, thought occurs. Consciousness is active. But that does not require a separate thinking thing. Thought is the thing. Consciousness is an operation, not a property of a hidden agent.

The Husserlian heritage: intentionality and the pure subject

Husserl takes up the Cartesian inheritance and attempts to purify it, refining it by removing crude dualism while preserving the essential, that which he believed to be the unsuppressible truth of Cartesianism. Consciousness, says Husserl, is always consciousness of something, it possesses an intentional structure, it is always directed towards an object, it is always oriented. This proposition contains a profound truth deserving rigorous retention: directionality is real, not an illusion; consciousness is not an empty sphere that suddenly, without cause or reason, turns towards the world; there is orientation, a relational structure between the lived and the referred.

However, Husserl projects upon this directionality a fixed and immutable essence: the transcendental ego as an irreducible point of foundation, as a pure subject that cannot be taken as an object of any experience (because it is the condition of experience itself), as the ultimate and ungrounded condition of the possibility of all experience. The transcendental ego is that which "accompanies all representations", that which remains identical across the multiplicity of mental states, that which allows self-affirmation of personal permanence and identity. This essence of the pure subject is, as Husserl describes it, as irreducible as res cogitans was for Descartes, only now presented in a more sophisticated phenomenological vocabulary.

We must reject this as fundamentally false: directionality (which is real) is not a property of a spiritual substance but an effect of material sensory-motor organisation that evolved phylogenetically to discriminate among stimuli, to approach sources of nutrition and well-being, to avoid threats, to maintain the integrity of the living body in a competitive environment. The perceiving body, the body with eyes, ears, sensitive skin, is a body materially oriented towards the world not because a transcendental consciousness orientates it internally and independently, but because evolutionary history equipped it materially to respond contextually to its environment, to differentiate food from poison, proximity from distance, threat from opportunity.

The operational proof of this refutation lies in disorganisation: when neurological lesions damage the sensory-motor pathways sustaining intentionality, the experience of directionality vanishes. The transcendental ego does not remain intact while the body suffers failure, the very capacity to be directed towards objects collapses. Husserl's ego revealed itself, under stress-testing, to be an effect of the material operation of neural systems, not an independent transcendental foundation. And intentionality, considered by Husserl to be the distinguishing mark of consciousness, is recognisable in far more primitive forms of sensory-motor organisation, in unicellular organisms moving towards nutrient sources, in plants orienting leaves towards light, in homeostatic feedback systems maintaining focus on physiological stability. Directionality is not the mark of spirit. It is the mark of any living system that encountered constraints in its environment and reorganised itself to respond.

The transcendental ego is a clear hypostasis, the projection of a functional unity produced by distributed processes in the body (sensory-motor integration, consolidated memory, foresight of future actions) onto the level of ontological essence, as though this unity, which functions necessarily so that cognition may operate in context, were also necessarily a substantial immaterial entity irreducible to functioning. Husserl refused to descend to the level where unity is realised, the level of processes, because he would have had to abandon the idea that there is something in the subject that cannot be taken as an object. But this impossibility is merely epistemological (the incapacity for total self-reflection of a system observing itself from within), not ontological (the presence of an irreducible immaterial dimension). The Husserlian illusion is identical to the Cartesian one, merely expressed in more refined language.

Dennett's critique and its limits

Dennett offers a partial antidote to Cartesian substantivism, a systematic and elaborate rejection of the Cartesian theatre, of that mental model wherein a central stage exists, a single motionless spectator observing, a projector creating the mental image floating on the screen of consciousness. The Cartesian theatre supposes that somewhere in the mind there is a space where experience unfolds, where colours are seen, sounds heard, ideas formed, and that an interior observer (the pure subject) watches this private spectacle from within. Dennett demonstrates, with implacable argument, that this model is conceptually incoherent and biologically impossible.

What really occurs, Dennett demonstrates, is parallel processing across neural systems: multiple circuits process information simultaneously, multiple drafts of narrative emerge in different neural regions and compete for attentional dominance, retro-active selection creates the illusion that there was always a unified, coherent narrative. The unified experience of consciousness, that impression of seeing a single colour, hearing a continuous melody, being a singular point of observation, is constructed retrospectively from fragments processed in parallel; it is an emergent narrative artefact, not a primordial given.

We must retain from this an imperative insight: radical anti-substantivism, the complete and unceding rejection of any irreducible centre, the clear understanding that the apparent unity of the subject is a construction, an artefact, a product of distributed operations and not a fundamental property of being-conscious. This immediately dissolves the Husserlian and Cartesian hypostasis. There is no transcendental ego observing. There are only multiple processes that, when coordinated, produce the narrative effect of an observing ego.

However, Dennett slips in his subsequent thought towards eliminativism, a position wherein the lived impression of being one (the unity of consciousness), the sensation of seeing colour, the quality of feeling pain, the experience of suffering or enjoying, are all deemed a narrative illusion, an artefact without real referent, a sophisticated trick the mind plays upon itself. If unity is a construction, if narrative is an artefact, then (Dennett concludes at certain moments) there is in fact no consciousness, only a narrative machine creating a false impression of consciousness.

We must radically reject this: consciousness is a real effect, not an illusion, although its mechanism is entirely distinct from what the Cartesian tradition presumed. The proof is operative and resilient: consciousness modulates behaviour in a measurable and detectable manner, permits learning through fine discrimination that the unconscious cannot perform, constitutes a functionally consequential difference that reorganises the organism, allowing anticipation of the future and storing memory in a qualitatively distinct manner. If it were a mere illusion, that is, if it made no real difference, none of these operations would be possible. Illusion does not operate. The consciousness effect operates.

What is an illusion, and only this, is substance, the idea that a separate thinking thing exists, a proprietary immaterial dimension of neural processes, a central observer that "has" experiences. That substance does not exist. But the reality of the operative effect we call consciousness, the functional difference its presence makes, is inescapable. Dennett was right to destroy the palace of essences. He erred in confusing the destruction of essence (the correct step) with the negation of the effect (the false step).

Searle's naturalisation and the resurrection of dualism

Searle, finally, attempted to naturalise consciousness without abandoning its irreducibility, a contradictory task that led him to philosophical failure: consciousness is an emergent biological property, absolutely real, specific to organisms with sufficiently complex nervous systems organised in an adequate manner. The attempt is honest in its fundamental intention, and the motivation is noble: to refuse both explicit dualism (mind and body as separate substances) and eliminativism (consciousness as illusion). It seeks a third way.

Yet it fails inexorably to preserve that which it seeks to save without resurrecting dualism under a more sophisticated and presentable camouflage. By affirming that consciousness is "irreducibly biological" (emerging from the brain, dependent upon it, necessarily) but at the same time "ontologically subjective" (accessible in the first person in a way that no objective external description can completely capture or exhaust), Searle ends up resurrecting precisely the dualism he intends to avoid, only with a new name, more contemporary language, and increased conceptual sophistication.

Structurally, however, it is a dualism identical to the Cartesian one: there is the physical (neurons firing, electrochemical processes, measurable objective description) and there is the mental (lived experience, first-person perspective, phenomenal quality), and these two levels are decidedly non-reducible to one another, according to Searle. Reduction would be precisely the error: as if one could completely describe the lived experience of seeing red merely by referring to patterns of neural activation in the visual cortex. This is empirically true, says Searle; therefore, there is genuine ontological irreducibility; therefore, there is a property of the mental that does not dissolve into physical description.

However, the irreducibility Searle invokes is a category confusion between ontological levels, a confusion between descriptiveness (properties of description) and ontology (properties of being). It is true that the lived experience of perceiving the colour red does not reduce to a physical description of neurons firing in specific patterns across layers of the visual cortex, just as a symphony played by an orchestra does not reduce to a sequence of air vibrations quantified in Hertz and frequencies, or a poem does not reduce to a configuration of printed letters on paper, or a game of chess does not reduce to the movement of wooden pieces across a board. But this phenomenological irreducibility of description, the empirical and non-controversial fact that a description at one level cannot exhaust the reality at another level of description, does not authorise any conclusion regarding an irreducible ontological essence, nor a separate substance, nor a hidden magical property transcending the physical.

What is truly irreducible is not "mental experience" as a property of a spiritual essence. It is perspective: the situated point of view, the particular location of a body in a determined space. This is a real and operational property of every organism materially located at a specific point in space interacting with environments through its sensors and response capacities. But this does not require a separate substance, nor a specific transcendental property, nor a dissimulated dualism. Perspective is operational and topological, not immaterial and spiritual: each body, because it is situated in a determined place in space with sensors oriented in specific ways (eyes directed this way, ears positioned that way, touch distributed according to this geography), can discriminate and interact differently with its environment than another differently situated body would interact. An observer with closed eyes does not see the same colours as one with open eyes, not because there is a different incorporeal soul, but because the material relation of the body to electromagnetic radiation is altered.

The irreducibility of perspective is pure geometry of the body in the world, it is topology, it is location, it is not hidden substance, nor a transcendental property of a separate essence. Consciousness does not need a separate essence to be irreducible in perspective: its irreducibility is a property of any system materially situated, embodied, located at a point in space interacting with an environment through sensors and response capacities. Searle reconstituted dualism precisely because he confused the description of perspective (which is real) with the necessity of a distinct substance (which is a false presumption).

1.3. Self-Modulation and Distributed Organisation

If consciousness emerges from material organisation and not from an anterior substance that would be its foundation, what is the precise structure of this emergence? Contemporary neurosciences offer functional models that allow us to understand this without falling into dualism or eliminating the reality of experience. Consciousness is not, in any of these models, located in a specific region of the brain, there is no "centre of consciousness", no homunculus in the frontal lobe or thalamus pulling the body's strings. It is an effect of distributed functional integration across multiple subsystems that begin to communicate intensely. Baars and Dehaene propose a model that has gained empirical evidence: information becomes "conscious" when it ceases to be processed in isolation within a specialised neural module and comes to be globally accessible, that is, when it ceases to be a property of one subsystem and becomes available to interact with multiple subsystems simultaneously (the explicit memory system, action planning systems, affective evaluation systems, linguistic narrative systems). To call this "global accessibility" is a rigorous functional description. And it is precisely this: a change in the pattern of access to information, not the appearance of a new substance, not an epiphany of the spirit. It is like saying a piece of news ceases to be private and becomes "publicly known" when disseminated, a real transition in the functioning of a social network, with detectable consequences, reorganising behaviours and responses. But it is not because a magical substance appeared. It is simply because the mode of processing and circulation changed structurally.

Damasio describes somatic markers as an automatic and continuous bodily response registering and communicating somatic evaluations of the body in real time. A friendly face is perceived for the first time, and the body responds immediately with relaxation of facial musculature, bodily approach, open posture, without deliberate thought, without conscious reflection. A threatening face is perceived, and the body responds instantly with defensive muscular tension, contraction, withdrawal movement, an immediate reaction occurring prior to any conscious cognition that could be verbalised. These affective responses are proto-conscious, proto-reflective, operations of evaluation and classification that organise behaviour without any explicit reflection or self-observation. But Damasio demonstrates something absolutely crucial for the understanding of consciousness: patients with localised lesions in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, a specific region integrating somatic markers with linguistic reflection processes, lose precisely the capacity to integrate these sensory markers with language and abstract reflection. They can verbally describe a potentially dangerous situation ("this is dangerous, this is a threat"), but literally feel nothing, the somatic response is present neurologically (skin conductance, heart rate alterations are measured), but it produces no lived emotional feedback they can recognise as their own. Or conversely, they feel intensely but cannot modulate the response, cannot exit pure reactivity, cannot use language and reflection to reorganise emotion. Brain damage does not leave them without raw emotion, it leaves them without the critical capacity to make multiple levels of operation interact: raw somatic response with conscious reflection, emotion with linguistic cognition, body with speech. This demonstrates operationally how real consciousness works: consciousness emerges precisely from this dense functional integration where multiple heterogeneous processes (affective, cognitive, linguistic) begin to amplify one another mutually, influencing each other in continuous circular feedback. It is not a new magical faculty descending miraculously, it is a new relational configuration of already existing processes, a new density of coupling between subsystems.

Emotional regulation, as investigated rigorously by Gross and collaborators, shows this mechanism of integration in continuous operation in the normal functional human. When someone experiences emotion, say, anger at injustice, they can try to repress it consciously (expressive suppression: keeping a stone face while the body boils internally at an increasing physiological cost, wearing down the cardiovascular system, accumulating chronic stress), or they can perform what is called cognitive reappraisal: using internal language to reinterpret the situation differently and thus reorganise the entire emotional response. "This critique is unfair in its form, but I see it stems from ignorance or fear on the critic's part, not intentional malice; this is an opportunity to understand where I am failing myself or where others fail to read my intentions; I can respond with a considered explanation rather than verbal retaliation." This shift in narrativisation is not merely "psychological" as if it were immaterial or secondary, it reorganises the entire body materially: it alters the cardiac pattern (reducing tachycardia), respiration slows and regularises, muscle tone relaxes especially in the face and jaw, hormonal secretion alters (cortisol decreases, oxytocin increases). What was anger focused on counter-attack transforms into problem-solving. This is consciousness in operation: the capacity to evaluate the emotion happening in the present, narrativise or reinterpret it through language, and modulate the bodily response through that symbolic reorganisation. But this is not a transcendental ego freely selecting among options, it is a body in which language (a socially learned symbolic system, an internalised structure of norms) has come to interact densely with affective processes (fear, anger, desire) and cognitive processes (memory, anticipation) in such a way that each continuously modulations and reorients the others in circular feedback.

When this coupling fractures, when integration between systems fails, consciousness becomes pathological. Patients with major depressive disorder experience precisely this: a dramatic reduction in "resonance" between systems. The affective system is actively sad, apathetic, the body is heavy, sluggish, empty of energy. The cognitive-linguistic system perceives this and narrativises: "I am useless. Nothing is worth it. I will not improve." But the narrative cannot reorient the affect, and the affect cannot give positive feedback to the cognitive system. There is decoupling. The integration allowing language to reorganise emotion, or emotion to energise language, has weakened. There is no internal "depressed I", there is an operative regime of resonance that has decelerated, whose amplitude has diminished, whose frequency of oscillation has become sluggish. Similarly, anxiety: an unbalanced integration where the affective system oscillates excessively (over-amplification, uncontrolled gain) while the cognitive-linguistic system fails to narrativise in a stabilising manner. The body is in a state of alarm, and thought feeds more alarm: "Something terrible is going to happen. I don't know what. Everything is dangerous." The resonance is not harmonious, it is chaotic, with uncontrolled amplitudes. Obsession: resonance fixed in a single defensive pattern, where repeated thought-action forms a loop that cannot diversify, remaining trapped. Severe dissociation: fragmented resonance, there is no longer a single oscillation, but multiple oscillations failing to synchronise. Different subsystems, one focused on threat, another on escape, another on freezing, function semi-isolatedly, creating the impression of "multiple selves". The body is not pathological in itself, it is the reflective organisation that has ceased to be integrated.

The empirical fact itself, the most direct proof experience offers, is that consciousness can be deactivated and reactivated in repeated cycles: in natural sleep, in voluntary wakefulness at dawn, in controlled surgical anaesthesia, in reversible pathological coma. This reveals structurally and with crystalline clarity the true nature of consciousness: it is an operative regime. If it were a substance, it ought to be a permanent thing, present or absent, yes or no, but if ever present, continuous and indestructible. But consciousness behaves operationally as a regime: it can activate progressively when physiological conditions align correctly, it can deactivate when those conditions cease to be present, it can reactivate when conditions return. During deep sleep (NREM stage 3, dreamless sleep, without narrative), the body continues functioning completely, metabolism remains in operation, wound healing in progress continues, thermal regulation proceeds, immunological processes activate. But the regime of reflectivity, of self-modulation allowing self-observation, ceases completely. Upon waking, the person universally reports: "I did not dream. I lost consciousness. One moment I was awake, the next it was morning." Not because consciousness hibernated in a corner awaiting resurrection, but because that regime was inactive, turned off. This is precisely the behaviour of a regime, not of a persisting substance. A regime is a relational configuration that emerges when certain couplings between processes stabilise at critical densities of interaction and feedback, and disappears when conditions cease to exist. An ocean wave is pure regime: it is absolutely real ontologically, it transfers kinetic energy, transports boats, causes measurable damage, but it is not a thing in itself. It emerges when wind, gravity, and water interact in a specific coupling under determined conditions; it vanishes integrally when interaction ceases (wind stops, flow ceases). The wave is not "asleep" when it disappears. It is simply non-existent. Precisely so with consciousness: real as a regime, consequential and operative, but not as a persisting substance.

1.4. Consciousness as Regime, Not as Entity

An operative regime, in the rigorous language of systems science and the physics of dynamic processes, is an integrated functional system that can install itself when conditions are appropriate, maintain itself indefinitely under specific constraints, degrade progressively when resources exhaust themselves, and reconfigure itself when external pressures force it to do so. Consciousness is precisely this, nothing less and nothing more. It is not a substantial entity with intrinsic properties, an essence subsisting independently, it is a specific relational configuration among multiple heterogeneous bodily processes which, when adequately coupled, permits the operation of reflective self-modulation. A regime has no substance of its own, it is not a thing, it has a relational structure, a pattern of interactions. When water and air interact under certain specific conditions of temperature, salinity, pressure, and movement, precisely coupled, they produce ocean waves. Waves are real ontologically, they produce measurable differences in the environment, drag substantial kinetic energy, transfer momentum, and can destroy human structures. But waves are not things. They have no essence. They are regimes: forms that emerge when conditions establish adequate couplings, and dissolve when conditions change. Water is not a wave, a wave is a relational property of water at a moment of specific coupling. So too with consciousness: real and consequential as a regime, not as an entity.

The enactivist perspective, as developed rigorously by Varela, Eleanor Rosch, and Evan Thompson, offers an alternative model avoiding both Cartesian dualist substantivism and reactionary eliminativism that denies any consistent reality to consciousness. Against the traditional and persistent idea, so deeply rooted that it seems obvious, that cognition is internal representation, a picture or mental image depicting an external reality independent of the observer (an idea leading to epistemologically irresolvable questions about how the interior could be faithful to the exterior, how representation could mirror the world exactly without distortion), Varela proposes: cognition is not representation of an external world; it is a continuous and bidirectional operative coupling between organism and environment. Consciousness does not depict or represent, it actively participates. The organism does not passively reflect a world pre-existing it as a thing in itself; it interacts continuously with specific environments, and this bidirectional interaction models simultaneously perception (how the organism discriminates and sees), behaviour (how the organism moves and acts), and the environment itself (how the organism transforms it through its presence). Body and environment co-determine each other continuously in a recursive dance where neither can be thought of as having ontological priority. Perception is always embodied perception of an organism in an environment; never "neutral" perception or perception "from nowhere". We must retain from this enactivist position: cognition is intrinsically embodied (there is no disembodied consciousness, floating without a material body; the mind is entirely dependent upon its living, localised embodiment), dynamic coupling is absolutely fundamental (there is no separate, neutral observing subject taking in an independent world; there is always participation, operative engagement, situation). We must reject clearly: the strong autopoietic tendency Varela maintains in part of his later work, where consciousness would be primarily mere metabolic self-reproduction of the living system, where the organism would be interpreted above all as a machine keeping itself alive by remaking itself. Consciousness includes but vastly surpasses metabolic autopoiesis. It includes the continuity of living metabolism, but incorporates also embodied memory (persisting beyond cellular replacement), socially learned language (transcending individual body boundaries), oriented project (exceeding immediate need satisfaction), dimensions irreducible to pure biological maintenance.

The operative implication is clear and completely transforms our self-understanding: consciousness is not a property the body "has", as it might have colour or extension, it is not an attribute or predicate subsisting in the body-thing as an internal essence. It is an operation the body "does", a process the body executes continuously. A river is not a thing existing in itself that subsequently "has the incidental property of flowing". That would be a fundamental category confusion. A river is precisely this: flux, a continuous process of movement, water circulation. The essence of the river is not river-substance, it is the operation of flowing. The fluvial form changes (the river overflows, dries in dry seasons), but continues being a river because it continues flowing. Precisely so with consciousness: it is not a thinking substance existing independently that subsequently "has consciousness of self" as an added quality. It is a regime of flux, continuous circulation of information between subsystems, neurometabolic energy in motion, synchronisation of oscillations, constituting the body as reflective, rendering the body capable of answering to itself, monitoring its operations, evaluating its evaluations. In this dynamic regime, heterogeneous processes (sensory systems discriminating, emotional systems evaluating, memory systems integrating, linguistic systems narrativising) gradually synchronise at a common frequency and mutually amplify each other circularly, generating detectable resonance. When this flux halts completely, brain death, irreversible deep coma, general anaesthesia deactivating the brainstem, there is no "asleep consciousness" hibernating in an internal corner awaiting miraculous resurrection. There is a completely deactivated regime, an operational pattern that has ceased to exist, and with it vanishes any possibility of answer to self or world. The body persists (metabolism can continue artificially), but consciousness, the specific regime of reflective integration, ceases. When flux reconfigures across development, neural development of the neonate passing from months in semi-reflexive response to a child observing itself, learning a new capacity reorganising neural networks, psychological trauma reorganising connections permanently, neurodegenerative disease unravelling networks that previously functioned, consciousness changes form, transforms profoundly, not because a new magical substance appears as an epiphenomenon descending from heaven, but because the underlying relational structure, the couplings between subsystems, transformed radically, creating a new operational signature, a new resonance, a new form of being-reflective.

This decisive understanding of consciousness as a dynamic operative regime, not as substance or persisting entity, opens immediately onto the crucial question the chapter must answer next: if consciousness is a material operation, an emergent pattern of coupled processes, a relational regime distributed across the body, who, exactly, is the one appearing to be at the centre of that operation, to whom belongs or who "has" the lived experience, who signs actions as their properties, who "suffers" the suffering affecting them? The answer cannot be a fixed entity with essence, it cannot be a thing persisting substantially independent of its operations. What exists is an emergent pattern of distributed coordination, mutual amplification, and circular feedback between processes having no isolated or substantive existence.

In the rigorous language of dynamic systems physics and classical acoustics, well-defined precedents exist: "resonance", a phenomenon where oscillations of multiple heterogeneous processes find a common frequency and, upon synchronising at that shared rhythm, amplify each other spectacularly and detectably, creating a unified signature of behaviour appearing to be one harmonious thing. It is not a poetic metaphor or vaguely inspired analogy: it is a phenomenon rigorously studied, measured, and reproducible in acoustic systems (two tuning forks tuned to the same frequency vibrate with significantly greater amplitude when brought close), electromagnetic systems (Larmor resonance in oscillating magnetic fields), classical dynamic systems (coupled pendulums finding a common beat when linked). Applied rigorously to the developing living body: multiple neural subsystems (frontal cortex for planning, thalamus for sensory integration, limbic structures for affective evaluation), endocrine systems (glands secreting hormones in rhythmic pulses), neuromuscular systems oscillate continuously at their own frequencies, and when these heterogeneous systems enter synchronisation at a common frequency through dense neural interconnections, they create resonance generating an observable unified signature of coordinated orientation and integrated response, a lived sensation of "being one", cohesion of perspective, apparent unity. It is not a hidden substance magically unifying processes, it is a dynamic pattern emerging when integration between subsystems reaches a critical density of circular feedback. This pattern does not persist by inertia or conservation of a fixed and essential form, it is a process reiterating continuously in a flux, remaking itself at every instant, persisting not through static maintenance of essence but through continuous active maintenance of coupling conditions between subsystems.

Who, therefore, is the subject? It is not a sovereign centre from which experience emanates. It is not a privileged observer suspended above the body. It is resonance, that effect of self-amplification where the body achieved the operative capacity to answer to itself, monitor its operations in real time, and modulate itself in response, maintaining and continuously recreating that reflective responsivity through permanent feedback. The subject is that which occurs when matter becomes reflective through sufficient integration of its processes. It is not the origin of its operations, it is their effect. It is not foundation, it is result. It is not prior in time, it arrives later.

The path to this conclusion required careful dismantling of premises. It was demonstrated that consciousness is not substance (as Descartes supposed) via evidence of its activation and deactivation. It was demonstrated that it is not an essential property (as Husserl supposed) via functional analysis showing how the same body can be "conscious" or not depending on whether its subsystems are coupled. It was demonstrated that it is not pure elimination (as Dennett suggests), for consciousness modulates behaviour really and detectably. It was demonstrated that it is not irreducible by special mystery (as Searle suggests), for irreducibility is merely topological: each situated body possesses an irreducible perspective, not because it possesses a special essence, but because it is located. What remains after dismantling all these fictions, what remains when all pretensions to essence are removed, is precisely this: an operational pattern emerging when processes integrate, a regime existing while conditions maintain themselves, an effect reiterating continuously without ever being a permanent thing. It is simple. It is material. It is sufficient.

2.1. The Subject Is Not a Centre

The history of Western philosophy rests upon a repeated fiction: that of the centre. Descartes located it at the point where mind touches body, the pineal gland as the specific command site where the cogito orders the body to move and feel. Kant elevated it to a universalised transcendental principle, the unity of apperception, that "I think" which must accompany all representations, guaranteeing the subject's identity across the multiplicity of experiences and continuous shift of contents. Husserl refined the image: a permanent intentional pole from which consciousness emanates, always already present at the origin, always directing itself towards objects even when sleeping or forgetting, even when attention wanders. In every successive version, the same fundamental architecture: the subject as owner of the body, located in a specific interiority (the gland, the head, the spirit, transcendental consciousness), indivisible, one, founder of all mental operation. The body is the instrument of this centre, the execution medium of what mental interiority decides. Emotions are processes the centre controls or ought to control, affects that reason disciplines or fails to discipline. Perception is capture by the centre, selective, attentive, filtered by interest. Memory is the centre's archive, a personal repository where diachronic identity rests. Will emanates from the centre, free of constraints, self-determined, pure agency expression.

This fiction is precisely that: a fiction, not a deliberate lie forged by bad-faith error, but a simplification so profound it became invisible, replicated in contemporary neuroscientific systems, embedded in the premises of those studying the brain with microscopes, perpetuated in the language of researchers seeking the neural "command centre", the located "cognitive subject". It is so deeply rooted as to seem elementary truth: there must be somewhere a thing controlling, something coordinating, a unifying principle.

However, rigorous empirical verification reveals the exact opposite. What really occurs is the complete inversion of this image, a radically contrary substitution of everything Western intuition presumed about itself.

The subject as emergent pattern

The subject is not a centre of irradiation, not a source from which mental and bodily operations emanate. The subject is an emergent pattern of distributed coordination, that is, the contingent outcome of the mutual amplification of heterogeneous processes which, when coupling with sufficient strength, with adequate synchronisation, with sufficiently intense feedback, produce the singular signature of an orientation, an integrated response, an "I". The "I" does not emanate from pure interiority. The "I" results from operations that are simultaneously and inseparably distributed. The sensation of unity each consciousness experiences, that feeling of being a singular point of view, an unrepeatable perspective, a locus of agency, is not proof of an indivisible central substance remaining intact from time immemorial. It is a resonance effect, a swell of amplification passing through multiple heterogeneous systems.

Anatomy of distributed coordination

Let us imagine a body, your body, my body, any living human body, not as a machine with a central cockpit, but as a field of parallel, heterogeneous operations:

Basic bodily processes: cardiac rhythm pumping, temperature maintained through energy dissipation, electrolyte balance regulated by kidneys and hormonal transport, respiration responding to blood oxygen tension, proprioception informing where joints are in space.

Fundamental affective processes: continuous tonal oscillations between approach (attraction, curiosity, appetite) and withdrawal (aversion, refusal, retreat), fluctuations of comfort or discomfort varying according to circumstances, vague intensities of "feeling well" or "feeling ill" colourising every operation.

Differentiated perceptual processes: capture of light refracted by ocular lens and mapped on retina, electromagnetic conversion into neural impulses, sound propagated through compressed air received by ear and transformed into cochlear oscillation, pressure and temperature on skin centimetres touching the world.

Mnemic processes of continuous reactivation: re-emergence of learned patterns, anticipations built upon past history, predictions of where the body will be, forecasts of what will happen, reactivation of associated meanings.

Linguistic processes of continuous symbolic manipulation: words emerging internally and vanishing, formulations rehearsed internally without being spoken, narratives told to oneself, names associated with experiences.

None of these processes, taken in isolation, is the "I". None dominates the others fundamentally, none constitutes a command hierarchy where one orders and others obey. Cardiac rhythm does not command perception. Perception does not govern affectivity. Affectivity does not control language. Language does not direct basal bodily processes. There exists, instead, transversal coupling: when these multiple processes couple strongly, when bodily rhythm amplifies affective orientation (a heart fluttering with excitement), when perception crystallises a mnemic pattern (recognition activating memory), when language names affective tension (saying "I am afraid" in a dangerous situation), a single pattern emerges, a convergence, a resonance. This integrating pattern is what we call conscious experience, what we designate as lived experience, what we name "I am thus" or "I am".

Verification through dissociation

Empirical verification of this view is inscribed not in brain images or measurements, but in clinical disintegration observed in dissociation and consciousness fragmentation. When clinical dissociation, whether of traumatic origin, drug-induced, or resulting from atypical structure, fragments the resonance pattern coordinating experience, the "I" does not remain intact while the body suffers breakdown as if they were two separate things an external accident could damage independently.

On the contrary, the "I" itself fractures, divides, multiplies into fragments failing to recognise each other mutually. The dissociated individual accurately reports: "It was not me. I was observing as if I were another. My hand doing things, but without the sensation of me doing them." This is not phenomenological falsity, not a hallucination where the subject confuses imagination with perception. It is a precise description of reconfiguration. The resonance pattern coordinating unified experience decoupled, the heterogeneous processes that previously amplified each other ceased to be synchronised, ceased converging onto a single signature. Mutual amplification ceased. The result is a multiplication of perspectives, each with its own signature, each experiencing as if it were a single isolated centre, without an integrating unity linking them. None of these fragmentations points to a "true I" hidden behind, unrevealed in fragmentations as its innermost core. It points to the exact opposite: to the recognition that the "I" is that resonance now absent, broken, distributed across multiple centres.

Verification through collapse

Or consider the apparently opposite case: stupor, torpor, catatonic shock. A person in severe shock does not respond to stimuli, does not move, does not speak, is immobilised in a type of functional paralysis without the body being severely damaged neurologically. They are not dead, bodily processes proceed: heart beats, lungs breathe, vegetative nervous system functions maintaining basal operations. But the pattern vanished integrally. There is no amplifying coordination across levels. Bodily processes proceed isolated from one another. None of them becomes consciousness. No "I" operates. No unified perspective emerges. Remove resonance, that specific coordination pattern, and you remove the subject. Not because the subject was merely sleeping, sleeping deeply and preserved intact in a safe chamber ready to awaken. It is because the subject only exists while that pattern exists; it is its effect, not an independent substance permitting suspension.

The illusion of efficiency

The fiction of the centre survives with the appearance of irrefutable truth because the resonance we describe is extremely efficient in healthy, well-organised bodies. In a well-coordinated body, with integrated neural systems, solidificated learnings, a history of operation without trauma, heterogeneous processes amplify each other so rapidly, so intimately, that the experience is one of immediate unity, instant synthesis. There is no time or space, no observable gap, between underlying multiplicity and apparent unity. There is only that singular point of view, that coherent orientation, that perspective appearing to emanate from somewhere, a specific site, as if there really were a central location where things coordinate. The illusion is produced precisely by the very efficiency of the pattern, its speed, its smoothness. When coordination is perfect, the mechanism is invisible.

When, however, the pattern degrades, in ageing where neural integration loses precision, in extreme fatigue where coupling slackens, in neurodegenerative disease where connections dissolve, multiplicity becomes more tangible, more visible. Processes decouple from one another. Unity is no longer given, no longer automatic. Effort, volitional work, conscious discipline are required to maintain it. The elderly person must focus to know where movement intends to go, proprioception weakened, prediction failing, the body does not "know" automatically. The tired person requires explicit concentration to hear what is said, auditory integration with attention fails. The sick person needs deliberation to remember who they are, autobiographical memory demands conscious recourse. This reveals the truth hidden by efficiency: there is no ontological guarantee of unity, no substance guaranteeing permanence, no essence assuring continuity. There is only a pattern under continuous, precarious, vulnerable maintenance, always at risk of reorganisation, fragmentation, radical reinstitution.

2.2. Genealogy of Resonance

Precise phenomenological description of this emerging architecture of distributed patterns was already present, albeit wrapped in different language, in the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a philosopher rarely credited with having dissolved the fiction of the centre with the same radicality rediscovered decades later by cognitive sciences and neurobiology. When Merleau-Ponty insists systematically that the body is not an instrument of the mind, that it is not a passive medium through which an incorporeal consciousness executes its designs, he is describing exactly the inversion articulated here: the body is a radically alive field of operations, endowed with its own intentionality, responsible for the immediate structuring of the perceived world, primary in relation to any mental reflection. His concept of the "body schema" is not a mental representation of a body (as if the brain maintained a cartographic map of where limbs are). It is the body's mode of keeping itself continuously in dynamic coordination with the environment through anticipated responses, continuous adjustments, perpetual calibration of actions in relation to perceived space. The body schema is precisely a pattern of distributed coordination, it does not exist in a single site (it is not "stored" in a brain region), but is an activity the entire body maintains when acting.

His concept of the "lived body" (corps vécu) is not a body-object seen "from within", as if an interior perspective existed where an observer watches bodily states. It is the body as a field of unified operations across multiple registers, sensation, movement, affectivity, that need no translation into mental language to function coordinately. When he rejects the classical alternative between receptivity (passivity of receiving impressions) and spontaneity (activity of deliberately forming representations), he points to exactly this: bodily operation is neither passive nor active in the classical sense. It is responsive, the body responds, it is reactive, but this reaction is neither passive reception nor conscious deliberation. It is an operation proper, a specific genre of activity where the body adjusts to the world while the world unfolds for the body.

Merleau-Ponty's "perception" is not a visual representation of reality transmitted through sensory channels to the brain where it is "seen" by an incorporeal consciousness. It is action, the whole body engaged in response to the world, calibrating, positioning, moving in relation to that which is perceived. Perceiving a rough surface is not receiving a sensory impression of roughness processed centrally; it is a motor experience where the hand retracts differently, skin transmits information because it was placed in contact, movement anticipates texture. Perceiving depth is not a mental calculation of retinal disparity; it is a reorganisation of the entire body in relation to distance, a movement where ocular convergence adjusts, postural tone shifts, orientation repositions itself. And when he describes the "synthesis" perception accomplishes, that unification of multiple aspects into a single object, he explicitly rejects the classical alternative offered by tradition: either the subject passively receives sensory data subsequently synthesised through mental activity, or synthesis is performed by the body itself without needing a superior mental agent to orchestrate it. Synthesis is not performed by a subject remaining motionless while receiving fragments. Synthesis is the very process of the body updating itself in continuous contact with its material situation. The "I" in Merleau-Ponty is that specific mode of bodily coordination, neither more nor less, neither an agent ordering the body, nor an unconscious body simply functioning. It is a pattern of bodily coordination.

The Simondonian contribution: permanent transduction

However, Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology remains trapped within certain premises limiting it: by the category of "experience" as though lived experience pre-existed bodily operation, and by the horizon of consciousness as if everything described were already a property of the awake mind. It describes the operative mechanism with phenomenological precision that remains relevant, but does not name it as a material mechanism, does not relocate it outside the horizon of consciousness, does not penetrate to the operations where the pattern emerges. This demands a complementary genealogy, provided by Gilbert Simondon through his rigorous insistence on the process of psychic individuation, a concept rescuing the production of the mental for the domain of material operations where it actually occurs.

Simondon radically refutes the idea that a psychism is a "resolution" or "overcoming" of pre-psychic tensions, as if the mental were a perfection transcending problems immanent to the biological. The psychism does not resolve the pre-individual charge. The pre-individual charge, the material excess that cannot be discharged in the simple cycles biology offers, is not something transcended or resolved once and for all. Psychism is the mode in which this pre-individual charge, that is, the material excess un-dischargeable in terms of simple biological logic, continues to operate in a new regime, an organisation where it is reduced to nothing, does not dissipate completely, but remains active under a different form.

An elementary living organism would function in simple, closed cycles: stimulation, sensory-motor response, tension discharge, brief rest, return to homeostatic balance. Homeostasis. Recaptured stability. Operation without residue. But the complex living body, especially one evolving for social operations, for coupling with intricate environments, for prolonged learning, encounters affects that cannot be discharged this way, tensions lacking an adequate motor channel for discharge, contradictions unresolvable biologically through simple motor action, incompatibilities between multiple operational registers that cannot all be satisfied simultaneously.

An organism is hungry but in a dangerous situation demanding immobility. Nutritive tension cannot be discharged (searching for food when predation threatens is dangerous), but cannot be ignored either (the body cannot suspend metabolism by conscious choice). Psychic individuation is precisely the emergence of a new regime of operation where these tensions are not resolved, eliminated, dissolved, surpassed, but are transduced, transformed, reoriented, recoded through symbolic, affective, mnemic mediations. Psychism is this permanent process of transduction, never a conclusion, never a stage completing itself and standing complete. It is not a step towards something superior or more refined (it is not evolution in a progressivist sense). It is a different mode of how complex matter operates when purely biological logic falls short, when the body encounters problems lacking simple closed cycles for resolution.

Simondon distinguishes with critical precision, against interpretations sliding his work, that the pre-individual charge is not "latent energy" awaiting discharge, as if it were an accumulated, contained force merely awaiting an occasion for release. It is a relational, permanent, generating property, constitutively present in any complex living system. And psychic individuation is not a "resolution" reducing the charge to zero (as if psychological maturation brought a person to perfect stability where no conflict remains). It is a stable pattern incorporating it, keeping it operating under transformed forms, sustaining its reality without needing to destroy it.

The danger here is falling into an evolutionist and teleological reading, as if psychism were progressive refinement, overcoming of primitive forms, a step above the biological in ontological hierarchy. Simondon explicitly rejects this, distancing himself from any framework where the mental is "more evolved" than the material. Psychism is difference, a specific modality, but not an improvement. It is not perfection. And it remains, by constitutive definition, unfinished, always in process, never solidified into a resting form. Individuation has no end. The pattern is always provisional. Resonance never rests in an acquired essence, never reaches a state of perfection where operation suspends itself.

This point is crucial to avoid a teleological regression rendering the entire analysis useless: the subject is not the outcome of a process of perfection and progressive complexification that began in inert matter, passed through crystals, biological life, and culminated transcendentally in consciousness as its crowning achievement. The subject is one among many possible operative solutions, occurring in systems encountering specific constraints, problems unresolvable on their own terms from previous operation, functional gaps forcing them to invent new modalities. It is not a predetermined destiny all matter ought to reach. It is localised contingency, a local solution to problems, an accommodation to specific pressures that specific body encountered in its phylogenetic and ontogenetic history.

The Whiteheadian view: subject as superject

Whitehead offers a third genealogy, dissolving completely the substantivist dichotomy between thinking substance and extended body, a dichotomy Descartes established and all subsequent philosophy sought to circumvent without truly destroying it. When Whitehead insists, with ontological systematics, that the subject is a "superject", that is, a retroactive result, not an anterior principle, he is saying there is no anterior agent emanating experience, no thinking thing remaining prior and now producing thought. There is only process: a flux of events where each occasion (each moment of experience, each occurrence) constitutes itself through its relation to other prior occasions. What we call subject is the form in which that occasion constitutes itself, not an agent the occasion expresses, but a pattern the occasion realises.

And when he explicitly rejects, with detailed argument, the Cartesian dichotomy between res cogitans (thinking thing, immaterial dimension) and res extensa (extended thing, spatial matter), insisting experience is not an exclusive property of an immaterial dimension lodging in a separate interiority, but the mode in which any entity (matter, particle, field, event) constitutes itself in its relation to others, he dissolves the fiction of the centre even more radically than Simondon, extending analysis beyond psychism and life. There is no privileged location of consciousness in a special immaterial domain. There is no special observer for whom experience exists. There are only patterns of operation, some more complex (the human nervous system), some capable of reflection upon themselves (the body thinking itself), some deeply involved in language and the symbolic (human consciousness as we know it), but none fundamentally different in kind from simpler operations, none revealing an entirely new ontological property.

Whitehead's risk is, however, different and subtle: a tendency to universalise operational description, suggesting all entities possess something like "experience", that the simplest operations of matter (particle movement, wave propagation) already involve a primitive form of "prehension" (Whitehead's concept of how one occasion "apprehends" others), possessing an experiential aspect. This universalisation dissolves the distinction truly mattering for understanding the mental: between systems operating with a resonance pattern capable of reflectivity, self-image, recursion of self upon self, and systems lacking these self-referential re-entry capacities.

Whitehead's authentic gain, complete processualism, radical rejection of substance, profound recognition that the subject is result, not founding principle, not cause, must be retained with precision and without concession. The subject is an operational pattern, not an anterior principle. The subject is a contingent actualisation, not a pre-existing essence. The subject is the result of processes constituting it, not a thing pre-existing processes. However, we must reject with equal radicality and without sentimentality the extension of this operational-pattern description to all matter as if consciousness were a universal property differentiated only in degree, as if a particle possessed primitive consciousness and a brain complex consciousness in the same way a drop of water is simpler than an ocean but fundamentally the same.

The resonance we call consciousness is a specific, localised operation of specific systems, not universal. Living systems sufficiently complex (particularly a nervous system with billions of neurons), sufficiently historicised (with sedimented learnings and operative memory), sufficiently coupled internally (where multiple registers of processing mutually amplify) for operational patterns to acquire reflectivity, self-reference capacity, the possibility of observing themselves while operating. This is what distinguishes human consciousness from other operations in nature: not the universal presence of experience, but the specific capacity of a specific system to execute operations involving self-modelling, anticipation of the future based on observation of the past, the capacity to alter its own behaviour based on comprehension of causality.

2.3. Resonance as Operator

Resonance in acoustics or mechanics is not a metaphor. It is a rigorous physical description: when two oscillations possess compatible frequencies, they couple and amplify each other mutually. Amplitude grows exponentially. A small, almost undetectable oscillation becomes easily measurable when reinforced by resonance. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed precisely because wind created oscillations that, coupled to the natural frequency of the bridge, entered resonance and grew until destruction. The phenomenon is ubiquitous: coupled systems with frequency compatibility tend towards amplification. It is physical law. Not vague intuition. Water in a glass produces standing waves when shaken at an exact frequency. Building structures have natural frequencies that, when excited by earthquake or wind, generate exponential movement growth. The calculation is classical: resulting amplitude from the superposition of two oscillations with slightly different frequencies produces amplitude modulation, beating. And when frequencies coincide, amplitude does not merely add, it reinforces, multiplies, becomes catastrophic. This is not a property of abnormal oscillators or fragile systems. It is a universal property of any vibrating system.

In a simplistic perspective, neuroscience faced the opposite problem: how could the multiplicity of neurons, billions, each with its own behaviour, all microscopic operations diverse, produce a unified experience? The initial response was seeking a "binding area", a special brain region where all information unified. A fruitless search. No such region exists. What exists is distributed functional integration. Neurons in vastly distant areas, sensory cortex, amygdala, hippocampal system, begin oscillating in synchronisation. Not because a central order coordinates them. Because there is frequency compatibility and coupling (via synapses, neurotransmitters, electromagnetic fields). When this synchronisation occurs on a large scale, gamma oscillations between 30 and 100 Hertz, involving tens of thousands of neurons spread across multiple regions, it correlates with the emergence of consciousness. Unified experience is this distributed synchronisation pattern. It is not made by a centre. It is the coupling pattern itself producing the unified signature. Researchers like Rodolfo Llinás demonstrated that oscillatory coherence between thalamus and cortex is a direct neural correlate of the conscious state. And this coherence is non-hierarchical, there is no master orchestrating slaves. It is an emergent dynamic of reciprocal coupling: areas resonate together because their frequencies became compatible, because their operative constraints aligned.

The correlate of this verification is pathological. When clinical dissociation fragments the pattern, schizophrenia in crisis, traumatic dissociation, certain neurological syndromes, what is observed is precisely this: desynchronisation, a dramatic reduction in broad oscillatory coherence, breakdown of the coupling producing resonance. There is no malfunction in a control centre. There is network decoupling. Regions cease vibrating together. Frequencies once compatible diverge. And experience fragments according to pattern fragmentation. The dissociated patient does not report: "My control centre is broken, but I remain intact." They report: "It was not me. I was observing from outside." The multiplication of perspectives, loss of unity, alienation of parts of one's own body, all these are precise phenomenological descriptions of coupling pattern reconfiguration. When large-scale synchronisation breaks, each region becomes "its own", there are multiple local resonances, but no unifying one. And this is indistinguishable, from experience's standpoint, from being fragmented into multiple "selves" failing to communicate.

Depression offers an inverted case. Not fragmentation, but resonance collapse. Oscillators that ought to amplify mutually cease doing so. Frequency drops. Amplitude decreases. Inertia grows. The body loses motor coordination, an arm moves without commitment, the voice emerges flat, the face becomes inexpressive. Emotions find no bodily expression. Perceptions lose colour, texture, salience, the world turns grey. Memory becomes viscous, the past does not circulate as an accessible resource, merely sedimenting as weight. The oscillatory correlate is a dramatic reduction of coherence at frequencies normally resonating, weakening of connections between frontal regions and hippocampus, power reduction in gamma and theta bands. Coupling failure between regions normally synchronising. This is not because the subject "lost their essence" or because a central structure suffered damage. It is because the pattern constituting resonance collapsed into a low-amplitude, rigid, non-dynamic mode. The body continues functioning, respiration, cardiac rhythm, metabolic cycles, but the operation constituting lived experience, generating responsivity to the world, has dramatically weakened.

Anxiety is a different pattern: unbalanced resonance. Amygdalar systems, thalamocortical systems, limbic systems enter coupling, but in a rigid, non-flexible manner. They oscillate together, but in a defensive configuration. The pattern produces coordination, there is resonance, but excessively rigid, excessively oriented towards threat detection, incapable of flexibilising when context changes. The anxious person experiences this as "being trapped" in a response pattern, incapable of exiting. Hypervigilance is the correlate of this fixed resonance: the pattern constantly anticipates danger because the frequency of structures seeking threat signals has been amplified. Oscillators are not decoupled, indifference would then exist. They are coupled rigidly, inflexibly. When amplitude of this defensive resonance rises, fear paralyses. When it fixes, it becomes chronic anxiety.

Trauma is even more intricate. The resonance pattern responding to danger becomes permanently inscribed in the nervous system. Bodily, affective, and perceptual systems create a coupling where potential threat is never completely ruled out. Defensive responses, once activated, do not completely deactivate. The body remains in partial alarm even in a safe context, the low-level vigilance pattern became the new baseline. The synchronisation pattern incorporates defence rigidity. Is the subject "damaged"? Have they "lost" their essence? No. It is that the resonance pattern constituting the subject reconfigured around a new geometry, one where threat is permanent. The subject did not vanish. It reorganised. And reorganisation is pathological not because it violates an essential form, but because it reduces adaptive flexibility, because the pattern became overly specialised in one direction, incapable of responding to new contexts, incapable of ceasing signal amplification of danger even when signals stopped existing.

The ultimate consequence is brutal: if the subject is a resonance pattern, then the subject is precarious. It can reconstruct itself, which is exactly what therapy does, creating conditions for new synchronisations to emerge. It can fragment, as in psychotic crisis where decoupling is total. It can reorganise, during learning, during periods of shift, during recovery. It can degrade, as in dementia where pattern loses structure. There is no substance guaranteeing it remains intact through perturbations. There is only continuous pattern maintenance. And that maintenance demands conditions. It demands a living body, the pattern does not exist without bodily materiality. It demands coupling, without functional connections the pattern dissolves. It demands operative continuity, without process underway there is no subject. Remove any of these elements and the pattern collapses. Interrupt respiration, decouple the central nervous system, paralyse the body, and the subject vanishes. Not to return when condition ends, but to be potentially reconstituted anew if the process restarts. There is no "I" preserving its essence during suspension. There is only a pattern vanishing and potentially returning.

2.4. Efficacy Without Essence

Here lies the philosophical core avoiding regression. If the subject is a resonance pattern without substance, how does it persist? How is it responsible? How does it possess properties? How does it differentiate from other subjects? How does it carry history?

The answer reintroduces no essence. It remains rigorously within the domain of the operative pattern.

The singularity of the subject, the fact that each "I" is unrepeatable, unique, distinguishable from all others, rests not upon a motionless essence or eternal form. It rests upon the unrepeatability of the pattern. No exact resonance is produced twice. Each coupling is affected by history, by prior contingency, by present body state, by context. The synchronisation pattern constituting "me here and now" is singular because it depends upon infinite conditions never reproducing exactly. Singularity is a structural property of the pattern: it is the result of history, not preserved essence. Each subject is unrepeatable not because it possesses an immobile soul, but because each operative pattern is signed by its history. Two identical twins do not produce the same resonance because their bodily, affective, perceptual histories diverged from the first moment. The pattern separates. Singularity emerges.

The historicity of the subject, the fact that it carries marks, is an inheritor, depends upon the past, is not a mysterious property. It is a structural property of any dynamic pattern. The present resonance pattern incorporates prior reconfiguration. Neural networks maintain synaptic connections modified by learning. Muscles maintain training "memory". The affective body carries marks of prior experiences. The pattern is not a tabula rasa at every moment. It is the crystallisation of history. And history is not an immobile archive, it is an operative tendency. The traumatised body does not merely "remember", it anticipates in response. The trained body does not merely "conserve", it operates according to acquired patterns. Historicity is not possession of memory. It is the mode in which the past continues operating in the present of the pattern.

The vulnerability of the subject, the fact that it can degrade, suffer, die, is not a defect. It is a direct consequence of the absence of essence. Because there is no imperishable substance protecting the "I", because the subject is merely an operational pattern, any perturbation to the pattern is a perturbation to the subject. Disease interfering with bodily coupling disintegrates the subject. Neurological lesion reducing synchronisation fragments the subject. Death paralysing the body dissolves the subject. Vulnerability is not metaphysical contingency. It is ontological structure. The subject is precisely that which is vulnerable. Refusing to be vulnerable is refusing to recognise that the subject has no transcendent essence.

The continuity of the subject, the fact that it persists across time, recognises itself, maintains coherence, rests not upon substantial identity. It rests upon dynamic pattern maintenance. The same body waking this morning is not the same body sleeping tonight, cells were replaced, proteins degraded and synthesised, synapses reconfigured. No matter of the body is identical to yesterday's. However, dynamics persist. The operational pattern reproduces itself. Neural networks maintain general structure. Bodily capacities renew in prior moulds. The pattern recognises itself, not because preserved essence exists, but because the network of operations constituting the subject maintains coherence through continuous renewal. It is like a river remaining the same river although water running through it changes every moment. Continuity is not immobility. It is dynamic pattern maintenance across change.

The responsibility of the subject, the fact that it answers, is capable of response, is accountable, demands no substance. It demands exactly this: operational coupling capacity with the world. The subject is responsible because it is coupled, because its resonance pattern is engaged with context, because its action reverberates in the world, because the world reverberates in the pattern. Responsibility is not a property of substantial will. It is a property of immersion in the world, of mutual interference, of bidirectional resonance. When the subject denies responsibility, "it is not me, it is society", "it is not me, it is my trauma", it attempts to escape that mechanism: being always already responsive, always coupled, always in resonance with operational consequences. No invocation of exterior determinism dissolves this. For determinism is precisely this: the fact that pattern is not independent, that it is constitutively dependent upon conditions, responding to them. Responsibility is not freedom to cause, it is capacity to answer to constraints, to reconfigure in relation to context. And that capacity is irrevocable while pattern exists.

Personal identity, that feeling of continuity each consciousness experiences, is neither illusion nor revelation of essence. It is a continuous operation of self-systematisation. The pattern produces itself across time, reorganising, adapting, reinterpreting prior history, anticipating the future. And this self-systematisation carries a signature. Not because a prior governing identity exists. Because the pattern, when reproducing, reproduces with its own characteristics. Autopoiesis, the operation by which a system produces itself, leaves a mark. Each subject self-systematises distinctly. And that distinctiveness is personal identity: not persisting essence, but a proper mode of self-reproduction, unrepeatable, historicised, vulnerable.

An aphorism condenses this:

The subject is not the centre from which experience emanates, it is the resonance produced when the entire body vibrates in a regime of sufficient coherence to act.

This designates radical inversion. No interior governs the exterior. There is a distributed pattern articulating as a singular coherence of operation. And that coherence, that resonance, is the subject. No more, no less. There is no addition of consciousness to an already complete body. There is the emergence of a unified pattern when multiple registers of bodily operation couple. Such a pattern is fragile. Such a pattern is historical. Such a pattern is responsive. But it is precisely that fragility, that historicity, that responsivity making it a subject, that is, capacity for response, experience, self-hood.

The question following is inevitable: if the subject is a distributed and dynamic resonance pattern, how does it persist? How does it remain coherent while the world continuously perturbs it? How does it not dissolve at the first shift of circumstance? The answer demands a genealogy of subjectivation, that process whereby pattern not merely emerges, but institutionalises itself, becomes stable capacity, reproduces as habit and disposition. This is the matter of the next Section: no longer what the subject is, but how it subjects itself to itself in order to persist.

3.1. To Subjectivate Is to Organise Instability

Subjectivation is not a trajectory leading from instability to stability, assuming a resting state exists to which the subject aspires to arrive. It is, rather, an operative regime in which persistent instability becomes habitable without ever ceasing to be instability. The subject is not an acquired state, the formulation "I am a subject" is grammatically misleading. What exists is an ongoing process: I subject-ify myself, I reorganise myself, I answer, I sustain fragile coherences unravelling and remaking constantly. This is the fundamental structure of conscious existence that phenomenology left in shadow, because phenomenology presumed an already constituted subject subsequently reflecting upon itself, instead of understanding that reflection is itself an ongoing operation of constitution.

Against the Aristotelian heritage dominating centuries of philosophy: form is not telos, no realiser of a potency oriented towards an end exists. The classical subject was conceived as movement from a potential state to an updated state, growth, development, perfection, progression through maturation stages to a final form. Teleological structure presupposes an implicit direction in matter, an arrow pointing to realisation. Here none of this exists. The subject has nowhere to go, no end to reach, no final form awaiting realisation. It possesses only process continuity. No maturity is arrival, it is merely more competent maintenance. Organisation of instability is not the work of a sovereign agent imposing it upon chaos as form imposes upon inform matter, this would still presuppose an interior commanding the exterior. It is self-organisation: constitution of local coherences through functional couplings, feedback reinforcing and adjusting, partial and provisional stabilisations inheriting from matter's domain the constitutive mark, being always already contingent, always already precarious. It is what chapters on matter organisation demonstrated: form is not an essence exterior to matter, it is a configuration emerging when constraints combine, persisting while maintained, transmuting when reconfigured.

This implies understanding maturity not as arrival at a final form, not as stability acquisition, but as enhanced competence in inhabiting and navigating instability. The "mature" subject is no less unstable than the developing subject, observed clinically in any competent therapist. Difference lies not in acquired stability quantity. It lies in the capacity to metabolise instability, answer it without collapsing, sustain uncertainty without splitting into multiple personas, continue functioning when certainties fall. It is the same lesson prior chapters formulated in matter's domain, stability is an exception, paid with permanent organisation cost, existing only in continuous tension regimes. The subject is this lesson's transposition to the symbolic domain. The human is no less animal than any other organism in this aspect, it organises its own instability through constantly renewing patterns. Difference lies in renewal being mediated by language, self-organisation being also self-narrative, the subject having to speak continuously to itself to continue existing.

The opposite illusion, that the subject can finally rest, reach a lasting equilibrium state, attain completeness peace, is precisely the illusion psychopathology exposes. And it is also the illusion generating most suffering. Beings exist having organised their entire lives around the project of "finally stabilising": achieving financial security, definitive romantic relationship, absolute truth requiring no re-examination, complete knowledge leaving no gaps. When none of these things occurs, because none can structurally occur, instability being constitutive of conscious life, they suffer as if a catastrophic personal failure occurred. They suffer because they still believe in teleology, still expect a final "place" where they can stop organising and simply be. The experience of the contemporary subject, inheriting fractures of all grand narratives (religious, national, developmentalist, communist, capitalist), is precisely learning there is no telos, no final rest. And this learning is simultaneously liberating, delivering from failure illusion, and terrifying, removing comfort of hoping it will someday be possible to not-do, merely be.

Subjectivating is, therefore, learning to live within this structure without attempting escape, without denying it. It is organising instability. This means all conscious life is work, work of maintenance, readjustment, contradiction integration, pattern renewal beginning to crystallise excessively. Consciousness is not rest, it is a continuous form of making oneself, remaking oneself, not allowing form to freeze into essence. The word "form" is crucial here: form not as stable essence, not as Platonic Idea persisting eternally, but as an organisation pattern repeating despite variability, persisting despite continuous matter shift, recognising itself despite lack of substantial identity.

Sleep is not subject rest, observed in neuroimaging: during sleep, the brain remains highly active. REM and NREM cycles represent different tension reorganisation modes. Dreaming is work, pattern reconstitution, experience reprocessing, motor and affective map updating. During sleep the pattern reconstructs, traumas begin processing, learning consolidates. Waking is not simply resuming prior operation, it is reinstalling an operative regime modified by night work. Habit shift is not straight-line progress, it is coupling reconfiguration, with instability periods during transition, regression risk when pressure increases. Abandoning addiction, learning a new language, adopting a new bodily posture, all are uncoupling old patterns and coupling new ones, always at a cost, always with underlying instability.

An aphorism condenses this:

To subjectivate is not to arrive at being, it is to continue organising oneself.

This phrase denies simultaneously teleological realisation ("arriving at being") and the illusion that an already constituted being subsequently merely persists ("continuing to be"). It involves organising that which has no predefined nature, the chaos of potentialities opened by language arrival that the subject must continuously inhabit, continuously reorganise. No destiny to reach exists. Only process continuation exists. This is dizzying for whoever expects to find rest. But it is exactly what allows the subject a plasticity essence could never possess: because no form to defend exists, reorganising anew is always possible.

Each day organisation restarts: waking is more than resuming consciousness, it is reinstalling a complete operative regime, reactivating couplings defining the subject, reconfiguring attention, memory, response capacity. Fatigue is not simply energy depletion (though contributing). It is degradation of resonance pattern maintenance capacity, hence extreme fatigue renders things literally less intelligible, people less "themselves". And rest offers no intact self resuming, it offers a subject reconstructed through reorganisation, ready to resume work.

3.2. Genealogy of Subjectivation

Philosophical history offers three entry points to understand how subjectivation functions as a process. Each retains a partial dimension imperative to hold, while each surpasses its limits when applied to the domain currently investigated. It is not choosing the correct one and discarding others, it is understanding how they operate together to describe an operation none can exhaust alone.

Foucault constructed a genealogy of subjectivation practices in Western thought. His fundamental observation is that the subject does not emerge as a spontaneous consciousness structure, a substance awakening and existing by its own nature. It emerges through specific historical self-constitution practices, practices varying radically from era to era, culture to culture, truth regime to truth regime. The Greek subject was not a subject in the same manner as the medieval Christian subject, who was not a subject in the same manner as the modern Enlightenment subject, who is not a subject in the same manner as the contemporary biopolitical subject. Transformation is not shift of opinion or concept evolution, that would be trivial. It is reorganisation of techniques whereby a being becomes an agent, learns to be a subject. And techniques are concrete: confession practices (teaching the subject to speak of self in guilt/redemption categories), conscience examination practices (teaching the subject to examine self according to normality grids), self-writing practices (diaries, letters, autobiographies formalising self-narrative), modern therapeutic practices (transforming the subject into a patient speaking of interiority), pedagogy practices (institutionalising self-knowledge modes), political practices (defining subject rights and duties). Foucault shows subjectivation is always learning to speak of self within formats history provided, and these formats constrain what is possible to say about self, and therefore what is possible to be as a subject. Crucial to retain from Foucault's genealogy is this: variability of subjectivation modes is not relativism, not indicating "anything goes", that subject is mere illusion. It is direct consequence of subject being a process, not an essence. If it were essence, if a fixed human nature invariant across time existed, practices would be correct or incorrect, closer or further from revealing true nature. But if subject is process, if it is what is made through practices, multiplicity of forms assumed across history is exactly what we expect. History tells us not that subject is illusion. It tells us subject is historically constituted, and constitution has no end, new techniques always emerge, new practices are invented to produce subjectivity.

The objection frequently raised against Foucault, that he reduces subject to History, denying proper reality of psychic life by subordinating it to discourse regimes, does not hold when understanding history here as real operation, not optional narrative or propaganda mind could reject if thinking well. Discourse, available formats to speak of self, is not exterior to psyche. It is the very condition in which psyche forms. No "real I" under discourse exists that discourse distorts. Only constitution operation through discourse exists. But crucial not to fall into opposite reading: subject entirely constituted from outside, mere effect of exterior structures moulding completely, leaving no margin. This would deny operation efficacy itself, failing to recognise that subject, though historically constituted, is also that through which history rewrites itself, through which new practices emerge, through which constraint is always also resistance.

Deleuze offers a different image: subjectivation as fold (pli). Metaphor is topological and must not be read as mere illustration. What exists prior to subjectivation is a smooth field without interior, social regime, symbolic, language, knowledge. All this is extension, surface. No depth, no interiority exists. What subjectivation does is fold this field, creating an inflection through which what was merely exterior extension gains depth form. "Interior" is not pre-existing psychological substance emerging at last. It is the form the fold takes. It is spatial topological reorganisation. The subject is the result of this fold, not because preceding essence transformed, but because folding operation creates a new topological configuration, a new dimensionality. When a surface folds upon itself, interior forms by pure geometric operation, no substance addition, merely relational reorganisation. Elegant in this image: avoiding simultaneously exterior determinism error (subject is not passive effect of structures crossing without resistance) and interior substance error (subject is not pre-existing entity merely entering world relations). The subject is the very operation of the fold. And as every operation is continuous, revisable, sensitive to small fold condition variations, subjectivation never ends. The fold can always be remade, pattern slightly altered, new topological configurations emerge.

Deleuze's takeover of Foucault shows exactly this: fold is historically variable. Folding techniques, from which subjectivity emerges, shift, hence interiority modes shift, depth forms vary. But fundamental operation, folding, interiorising, making self a problem for self, constituting an interior through continuous operation, remains. Meaning all conscious life is, at minimum, a fold. No consciousness exists that is not, simultaneously, self-constitution through inherited practices and constraints. Freedom is not prior to the fold, it lies in folding operation plasticity.

Canguilhem provides a third dimension others left in shadow: normativity. The living being, any living being, from simplest organism, produces norms. Does not receive them as exterior order imposing. Produces them as environmental pressure response. Organism chooses what feeds, flees what damages, organises according to viability criteria it establishes. In human, normativity capacity extends to symbolic domain. Meaning subject does not merely suffer history-imposed norms, learns also to produce them, reconfigure them, establish for self conduct, evaluation, relation, thought standards. Subject normativity is response capacity, capacity to not simply suffer constraints, but reinterpret them, find margin within them, produce innovation from them. And this capacity is precisely that through which it constitutes as subject, not passive entity absorbing norms, but normativising being, producing meaning criteria, continuing to live even when existing norms are insufficient.

This dismisses a false conclusion often drawn from superficial Foucault readings: subjectivation is entirely coercive, subject is complete victim of structures moulding without manoeuvring margin. Not entirely true. Margin exists. Plasticity exists. Capacity to introduce variation exists, not through transcendental freedom, but through operation resilience itself, through fact that no practice constrains completely, interpretations are always possible, subject in response can reorganise. Not unlimited freedom, nor pure determinism. Exactly what Canguilhem termed vital normativity: creative response capacity within constraints, meaning production capacity from unchosen pressures.

Joining these three perspectives, Foucault (historical constitution practices), Deleuze (topological fold), Canguilhem (vital normativity), yields image of subjectivation as process whereby a being, historically and socially constituted, learns to speak of self, examine self, organise life around practices making it subject, while this being is capable of producing variation, reconfiguring norms, making self according to modulations history had not exactly foreseen. The subject is effect (practices effect, fold effect, constraint effect) and agent (responsive, normativity capable). Not pure effect, possessing response capacity not simply suffering. Not sovereign agent, emerging within unchosen constraints. Intermediary, precarious, but real position.

Objection to clear away: this is "merely" developmental psychology with another name, stages, phases, progressive maturation. Absolutely not. Subjectivation is not linear trajectory through fixed stages. Ongoing and revisable process throughout life. No moment where subject "is ready", can stop organising, reached definitive form and rest exists. Main difference from classic development theories (Piaget, Erikson, Lacanian psychoanalysis with chronological periods). Stability appearing to characterise adult, versus apparent turbulence of childhood/adolescence, is optical illusion created by maintenance becoming quieter, less visible, crystallised in habit. Active pattern maintenance, not reached inertia. Adult suffers no less instability than child, merely organises more crystallised, often less conscious, sometimes more rigid. Adolescence seems chaotic because prior pattern disorganises and new patterns haven't stabilised. Adult seems stable because pattern sedimented. Sedimentation is not rest, merely quieter continuation form.

3.3. Responsiveness Under Pressure

How to evaluate a subjectivation process quality? Traditional response formulated in integration terms: "Subject is well when reaching psychic coherence, integrating conflicts, parts functioning in harmony." Criterion remains vague and potentially teleological. Integration to what? Harmony facing what normality standard?

Criterion emerging from prior analysis shifts: evaluating subjectivation not by acquired stability but by responsiveness under pressure. Closer to true. A well-organised subject is not one suffering less pressure, no one escapes pressure, constitutive element. It is one whose organisation responds with plasticity, flexibility, without collapsing. Responsiveness is continuous adjustment operation to real existence conditions, without demanding favourable or predictable conditions.

Five dimensions become relevant in evaluation, each involving an operative spectrum where neither extreme is fully functional.

First: how does it respond to uncertainty? Beings exist becoming rigidified when certainty slips, obsessively seeking to reconstitute determinist frames even when reality shows non-existence. Rigidity is defensive strategy, if maintaining illusion world functions by rules, instability seems controllable. But high price: any reality deviation from illusion produces continuous crises. Others manage functionality within ambiguity, without transforming into panic or intellectual paralysis. Not indifference, capacity to act under uncertainty, adjust decisions as new information arrives, recognise simultaneously reality is unpredictable and action necessary. True responsiveness: not uncertainty elimination (impossible), but operative life capacity within it.

Second: how does it sustain affective bonds? Affectivity is space where instability reaches highest intensity. Between total fusion (self/other boundaries vanish, autonomy yields completely to symbiosis) and absolute autonomy (relation always secondary, instrumental, other always potential threat) an operative bonding register exists permitting simultaneously binding and difference. Fusion protects from solitude but dissolves self in permanent alterity. Absolute autonomy protects from dependence but condemns to structural isolation. Affective responsiveness is capacity to be connected without vanishing, differentiating without rejecting. A well-organised subject needs not annul other to exist, nor self facing other. Sustains contradiction: "Other matters absolutely to me, and I am simultaneously and truly an autonomous reality."

Third: how does it cross losses? Question becomes acute, loss being material rupture, forced affective structure reconfiguration. What does an organised subject do with rupture? Radically different possibilities: those collapsing, experiencing loss as proof of never being truly subjectival, what seemed organisation was illusion ("logic": if loss destroys me, prior construction was false). Others integrate loss in existing pattern, not as if unoccurred, not in denial, but as permanent change affecting functioning mode. Loss shifts form: reduces joy types, opens wounds periodically reopening, imposes continuous relearnings. Responsiveness: not pain annulment, but continuation through pain-imposed shift. Body scarred by loss is not "cured" subject, subject learned living with wound.

Fourth: how does it reorganise habits when environment changes radically? Routine offers mental economy, automatism reduces cognitive living cost, frees energy for other operations. But when automatism fails, environment altered and habits un-corresponding to real pressures, what happens? Crystallised beings maintain habit when dysfunctional, suffering environmental shift as unbearable aggression against sacred pattern. Crystallisation is contingency refusal form: "Things shouldn't be so; I'll maintain things as were, as if shift were illusion." Others whose plasticity permits relearning, not without cognitive cost, disorganisation periods, but without total block. Shift recognised real, old habits undone, new patterns rehearsed, errors committed and corrected. Responsiveness: accepting shift as permanent life condition, relearning as continuous operation.

Fifth: how does it tolerate ambiguity? Ambiguity is state where two contradictory meanings coexist without synthesis, choosing one holding integral truth impossible. Mind has strong splitting tendency facing this, compartmentalisation, refusing one meaning, imagining existence "as if" only one true. But real sustaining capacity degrees exist. Well-organised subject manages holding both true simultaneously, without throwing into total chaos. Tolerance is not suffering absence, ambiguity is intrinsically uncomfortable. Capacity to live with discomfort without turning into intelligibility destruction.

These five dimensions show responsiveness is not abstract generic capacity. Always responsiveness-to-something. Responding to uncertainty, alterity, loss, shift, contradiction. Response quality measured not by success, no one "wins" these dimensions entirely. Measured by functional continuity without pathological rigidity, process maintenance capacity without illusion of ease or reaching rest point.

Psychopathology must be reread in light of this. Saying "depression", "anxiety", "dissociation" usually conceals thinking appliance malfunction that should function otherwise. Language misleading, presupposing prior "normal" state corrupted. Real existence: resonance pattern reorganisation under excessive pressure or resource lack to maintain responsiveness. None of these organisations is "true" pathology in classical sense, no part breakdown to repair. Mode of being that functioned in specific circumstances (childhood protection making adaptive; real threat period needing defence) and crystallised, becoming habitual when circumstances shifted radically.

Depression is a subjectivation mode, organising instability through collapse, possibility reduction, responsiveness weakening to all except loss/lack. Psychic energy concentrates in minimal conservation. Mobility suspended. Future unthinkable. Functioned when pressure was catastrophic and sole survival was inertia. When pressure shifts and mode persists, becomes obstacle: body remains organised for non-existing threat.

Anxiety is radically different mode, organisation through frantic anticipation, future danger pre-elaboration, hypervigilance. Energy concentrates in negative possible space roaming. Mind simulates catastrophes lacking adequate defence (imagined, infinite). Functioned when real threat was continuous/unpredictable, anticipation offered control illusion. When threat shifts nature and mode persists, becomes prison: body remains organised for uncoming attack.

Dissociation is another, organisation through rupture, compartmentalisation protecting certain self registers from others, periodic memory continuity erasure. Functioned when suffering integration would be suicidal, compartmentalisation was salvation. When threat shifts and mode persists, becomes fragmentation: body remains split, personal continuity never consolidated, responsiveness never integrated operation.

Therapy, in this context, is not "cure" of something broken. Reorganisation: learning different instability inhabiting mode, pressure responding, sustaining subjectivation process coherence without demanding pressure disappearance or certainty return. Therapist does not "repair", participates in condition reconfiguration under which subject organises own instability. And because subject is continuous resonance with what is said of it, body language effect, reconfiguration is possible: word spoken differently produces pattern reorganisation, not changing objective reality, but changing how body responds to itself.

Subject competence is not instability absence, no such thing exists. Responsiveness to occurrences, capacity to continue organising when pressure exceeds expectation, security vanishes, loss is irreparable. Competent subject is one for whom catastrophe is not end synonym, it is reconfiguration. Saying: "What was is no more. I am now this. And continue." True subject strength, not victory over adversity, but living within without vanishing.

3.4. Closure: The Subject as Operator

The movement completed in this chapter can now be synthesised precisely through three simultaneous destitutions that produce no void, but a radical reconfiguration of what it means to be an agent.

First destitution: consciousness is not substance.

Consciousness is an effect. It is that which occurs when language arrives at the body, when the body begins to speak of itself, when continuous speaking about self transforms being into being-said. No "conscious I" prior to deciding to speak of self exists, reflection is consciousness itself in operation. Not a mirror reflecting prior reality. Event: continuous resonance between what is said of self and what is made of self, between narrative told and actions performed. When speaking ceases, language suspended, consciousness does not vanish instantly, persists as echo, memory. But when linguistic regime definitively ceases (sleep, death), consciousness leaves no "something" behind: leaves material void that was support, nothing more.

Second destitution: subject is not foundation.

Subject is not action base, effect of continuous action. Repeating pattern, instability organisation pattern. No "subjectal substance" prior to subject operations exists. Subject is total resonances: stories told, habits sustained, bonds kept, promises made, broken promises. Sustains local coherence without necessity, without guarantee. Exists because material conditions (neurological body, environment coupling, learning history) conspired producing specific pattern. Could be another pattern, under other conditions. But is this one. While pattern holds, subject exists, not despite contingency, but as contingency operation.

Third destitution: subjectivation is not acquisition.

Subjectivation is not acquiring a "subject" state conquered and possessed. Continuous process, operation through which being organises constitutive instability. Does not end. No moment subject says: "Now complete subject." Permanent reorganisation work, pressure response, coherence maintenance. Cessation is death, not body stopping functioning (can last long after), but stopping instability organisation as resonance pattern, stopping continuous response to own state and environment state.

These three simultaneous destitutions strike against classical subjectivity metaphysics. Undo subject-substance illusion. Leave no void. Leave operator.

Subject is an operator. Operator of what? Of body constitutive instability organisation. Precarious coherence maintenance against continuous entropy. Response to internal pressures (desires, fears, contradictions) and external (environment requests, others demands, coupling chances). Real efficacy, subject actions transform world, alter material configurations, reorganise possibility spaces. Subject kills, builds, loves, abandons, promises, breaks promises, each operation echoing consequences. But no essentialist substance. No "I" prior to operation subsequently acting exists. Operation is the I itself. Doing is being.

Not relativism denying agency reality. On the contrary: comprehension that agency is real precisely because depending on no metaphysical ghosts. Subject acts because material response machine, body organising multiple ways. Action efficacy does not diminish by contingent and un-grounded nature, on the contrary: contingency is operational freedom condition.

Responsibility as material operation.

Implications developing in next chapter, where ethical question emerges in full relevance. Anticipated here with clarity: responsibility demands no substantial ego prior to acts. Demands no free will in isolated metaphysical sense from material causality. Demands response capacity, operational, historical, contingent, but absolutely real.

A responsible subject is one whose organisation permitted response capacity development. Developed (education, experience, struggle) capacity to recognise operations as own, reflect upon, anticipate, repent. And because developing capacity to account for operations, answering when questioned ("Why did you do this?"), modifying action pattern when recognising error, is responsible. Sufficient. Demanding more is failing to understand subject is exactly this, not illusion hiding true reality behind.

Most important consequence: subject efficacy, responsibility, depend on no metaphysical certainty. Depend solely on process continuity. While subject continues organising, responding, not collapsing completely, agency exists. Responsibility exists. Subject emerging here differs from traditional philosophy, seeking agency foundation in transcendental freedom, autonomous will, substance resisting determinism. Subject emerging here less majestic. Much more robust. Because real.

A3 Aphorism: To subjectivate is not to arrive at being, it is to continue organising oneself.

Sentence captures total difference. "Arriving at being" presupposes end, goal, reachable state. Suggests teleology, journey culminating. "Continuing to organise oneself" suspends teleology. Suggests indefinite process, unending process. Subject does not arrive at being. Subject is continuous self-organisation activity. When activity ceases, no "resting subject" exists. Subject absence exists.

The bridge question: memory and identity.

Question left in suspense, opening space for next chapter, transforming understanding of what was demonstrated here: if subject is operator continuously organising, reorganising instability, sustaining precarious coherences, how persisting across time? How does what remakes continuously not transform into disconnected moments series, gestalts flickering never crystallising in identity?

How personal continuity without substance?

Answer simple, transforming everything: memory. Not traditional sense memory, not past impressions archive, mental drawer conserving lived records, interior library consulted when needed.

Memory is material body reinscription operation. Remembering is not past retrieving. Retrieving presupposes past stored somewhere, intact, awaiting rescue. Remembering is remaking body according to mark past left. Present reorganisation of material structures according to conformations prior events imposed. When recalling event, not "rescuing from archive". Reconstructing bodily form possessed when event inscribed in me. And continuous remaking, daily structures remaking according to past marks, weaves continuity.

Continuity not in substance. Continuity in form. Renewing pattern at every moment carrying memory of prior ones. Like river never same river twice (water changing continuously) but always same river following same bed it carved.

And from reinscription operation, body capacity to remake according to what was made of it, emerges true human vulnerability and ethical possibility: body that can be marked is body that can suffer. But also body that can transform. Can be wounded, can learn. Diminished, reorganise. Lose what was owned, integrate loss in defining continuous form. Next chapter shows true personal identity structure, not identity as essential qualities possession holding across time, but identity as reinscription operation, continuous remaking according to inscription history constituting living body.

And shows also from material reinscription operation, body capacity remaking according to given form continuously remade, ethical possibility emerges: being that can be marked is being for whom other can matter, responsibility real, ethics fundamental structure not added metaphysical luxury.
