Introduction to Theme III
Externalised inscriptions accumulate in layers. Every new text encounters earlier inscriptions, every archive selects what remains recoverable, and every machine reorganises the gestures of bodies that act through it.
Chapter 7 develops the text as a palimpsest whose apparent novelty retains prior inscriptions; Chapter 8 examines the archive as an active condition of the future, since preservation and exclusion determine what can be resumed. Chapter 9 returns these operations to the human body, altered by the technical systems it builds and inherits.
The machine becomes an external body through this reciprocal formation. It extends memory and action while imposing rhythms and constraints of its own. Technique rewrites the human because neither bodies nor tools remain intact across their relation; each new capacity also modifies the field in which future capacities can emerge.
