1. Rhythm and Temporal Plurality

1.1. The Ontological Priority of Rhythm

Rhythm is not that which we detect when applying a measuring instrument. This is the metrological trap persisting in common intuition. The sequence appears natural: first events occur, an atomic oscillation, a rotation, a cycle of chemical transformation. Then we apply an instrument: a clock, a counter, a spectrometer. And we ascertain: there is a pattern. There is regularity. The intuition that follows is clear: first there exists the disordered phenomenon; then we human beings measure it and discover a pattern within it. But this sequence lies about the fundamental ontology of things.

Rhythm is not an effect of observation. It is not a property emerging when observers equipped with instruments arrive. It is a condition of possibility for observation itself. Proof of this priority: the metrological definition of the second. A second is defined internationally as 9,192,631,770 oscillations of the hyperfine state of the electron of the caesium-133 atom in its ground state. What is the meaning of this definition? It means that metrologists selected a material benchmark that was already oscillating. The oscillation did not begin when physicists decided to measure, it had been taking place millions of years prior. It oscillated when the Earth was forming. It oscillated when caesium gases existed in stellar nebulae.

The clock does not create the periodicity it measures. It couples to the periodicity that already exists. Metrology is a parasite of rhythm, not its creator. Rhythm is prior to measurement, ontologically independent of any regime of measurement. This is the fundamental shift: material reality is intrinsically rhythmic prior to any apparatus measuring, prior to any observer existing, prior to any symbolic regime of counting or language. Rhythm is not a judgment upon reality. It is not a faculty for recognising patterns. It is a property of the material real in itself.

Bergson’s philology offers the sharpest point of entry for this understanding. Bergson diagnosed a fundamental error in Western tradition: the spatialisation of time. Western thought, Bergson argued, treats time as a homogeneous and neutral line, divisible into perfectly equal discrete units, traversed by an advancing point, the illusory "arrow of time". This is the image of time as space. Spatialised time is that in which all moments have the same quality, the same extension, the same indifference. It is the time of clocks, the time of machines, the time allowing synchronisation of operations across distant cities.

What Bergson retains with rigour is the critique: real time is not spatialisable in this manner. Real duration is heterogeneous, each moment possesses its own quality, its own density, its own texture. It is continuous, it is not composed of discrete instants succeeding one another like beads on a thread. It is qualitative, it cannot be reduced to pure quantity. It is indivisible, each moment contains the entire past in a compression, and the present is dense with memory and anticipation. The future is not "ahead", already determined, it is open, contingent. Real time is not a line, it is thickness. Duration is the pulsation of this thickness.

Bergsonian gain for the present chapter: the priority of duration over measurement. Rhythm is the pulsation of duration, not the metric division of time into intervals. Temporal heterogeneity signifies that rhythm is not repetition of the identical, each cycle, each oscillation, each return carries difference. Music provides the perfect example of this truth. Musical rhythm is not pure metrics, it is not 1-2-3-1-2-3 echoing infinitely. It is a qualitative pulsation differentiating itself. Nineteenth-century Russian music senses time differently from Western music. Non-Western music, Hindu ragas, African rhythms, possesses polyrhythms that Western metrics cannot capture in notation. Rhythm is prior to notation.

Yet Bergson pays a conceptual cost that this chapter entirely refuses. Bergson confines duration to consciousness, to the interiority of lived experience, to the subject that feels and remembers. Real time would be a property of the conscious subject, duration would be the privilege of the lived. Unconscious objects, material processes lacking observation, would possess only spatialised time, mechanical time, dead time. Matter would not endure, it would merely exist in a given extension. Life and consciousness alone would bring genuine time.

This position is unsustainable from an ontological material standpoint. The oscillation of caesium-133 ritmated for a billion years before any consciousness existed in the universe. Nuclear reactions within stars pulsed to their own rhythms when life was impossible. Rhythms do not await the conscious observer in order to exist. We refuse the Bergsonian confinement: material rhythm requires no consciousness. Re-formulation is necessary: rhythm as heterogeneous material pulsation, prior to measurement, indifferent to the subject, autonomously rhythmic. Duration is not the privilege of lived experience, it is a constitutive property of any real process reorganising itself.

Whitehead supplies the transition permitting this broadening. If rhythm is a property of material processes rather than human consciousness, process must be thought as a fundamental cosmological category. Whitehead (1929) refuses the substance-accident division that structured Western thought. Reality is not composed of stable things hovering in neutral time. Reality is composed of events, actual occasions, processes. Each actual occasion is a process: it integrates the past into a new synthesis, that which Whitehead designates concrescence. The present is not an impossible point, it is a dense phase of active synthesis. Occasions concresce, they grow continuously out of prior conditions.

Rhythm emerges here as deep cosmological structure. Events do not "happen in time" as though time were a prior container. Events are temporal through and through, temporality permeates their entire composition. The oscillation of the atom is an event, continuous processing of anterior conditions. The oscillation is rhythmic because each occasion (each pulsation) is a synthesis of conditions that already possessed their own rhythm. Concrescence is continuous reconfiguration. The permanence of rhythm is testimony that prior occasions leave operative conformity upon subsequent occasions.

Rhythm thus emerges as the structure of the cosmos prior to any measurement. Before clocks, before numbers, before observers, there were cosmic processes possessing immanent periodicity. Rhythm is the temporal signature of concrescence, it is how matter maintains itself through continuous change. Each rhythm recorded the memory of the prior process, carrying the continuity of operation. Solidary rhythms produce more complex patterns. Competing rhythms create emergences. Rhythmic matter is organised matter.

Synthesis of argument 1.1: rhythm is prior to measurement because matter is intrinsically rhythmic. Bergson provides the critique showing spatialisation of time to be a fundamental error, real time is qualitative, continuous duration prior to any marking. Whitehead provides the cosmology of process, the event is not a thing occurring in time, it is pure temporality. The second (the international metrological unit) is not arbitrary, not a convention lacking foundation. It couples to material oscillations that already exist, already rhythm, already operate. The priority of rhythm means that material processes produce their own temporality, they do not receive time as an external container for the life they carry out.

1.2. Rhythms in Nature: Autonomy and Polyrhythmia

If rhythm is ontologically prior to measurement, it must abound in real examples: systems that rhythm independently of observers. This section fulfils two functions. First, empirical demonstration of autonomy, showing that rhythms operate without any meter present, without a conscious observer, without human technology. Second, establishment of polyrhythmia as an ontological regime, revealing that there is no single cosmic rhythm, but multiple rhythms coexisting across disparate scales, each autonomous, each fundamental.

The pulsar PSR B1937+21 offers the inaugural example. This cosmic object, a collapsed neutron star, rotates on its Section 641 times per second. Detected in 1982, its regularity is extraordinary: comparable to the finest atomic clocks on Earth, with a deviation of approximately one millisecond over many years. But here is the crucial ontological question: this pulsar was rotating for millions of years prior to detection. Regularity is not an effect of observation. No measurement created it. Periodicity is a constitutive property of the rotation of the neutron object in itself, indifferent to any apparatus recording it.

The argumentative point is the ontological autonomy of rhythm. The pulsar does not await the installation of a clock to begin oscillating. It does not "wait" for detection. Periodicity is not a relation between the process and a measuring instrument, it is a constituent mode of operation of the pulsar itself. Ultra-rapidly rotating neutron matter possesses a cadence, that cadence is prior to and ontologically indifferent to human clocks or observers of any species. Observational astronomy does not create pulsars; it discovers them already operating rhythmically across ages. Compact matter, nuclear material compressed to extreme density, pulses with regularity making it visible across thousands of light-years. The pulse is emission of radiation along magnetic poles, sweeping the sky like a cosmic lighthouse. This operative structure was already functioning indifferently centuries upon centuries before telescopes were pointed towards it.

The extension of this phenomenon reveals its ubiquity: thousands of pulsars have been discovered in recent decades. Each possesses its own characteristic frequency, its own cadence of rotation. Some rotate dozens of times per second; others, hundreds; some, thousands. The cosmos is an orchestrator of multiple rhythms, each compact object with its own temporality, its own rhythmic signature. Pure neutron matter, lacking life, lacking intention, lacking any symbolic regime whatsoever, organises itself into rotations defining its own rhythms. These rhythms depend upon no measurement registering them. They depend exclusively upon mass, initial rotational velocity inherited from stellar collapse, and the physical structure of the contracted object against gravity. No observer is required. Regularity is an act of matter, not an effect of the gaze. A pulsar is a material accelerator: the stellar collapse forming a neutron star concentrates the mass of a sun (1.4 to 3 solar masses) within a radius of a mere 10–15 km. The resulting density is incomprehensible on a human scale: one cubic centimetre of neutron matter would weigh a billion tonnes. The rotation inherited from collapse (and the conservation of angular momentum) accelerates as a direct effect of this concentration, pure physics, lacking intelligence, lacking observation. The pulsar PSR B1937+21 rotates at 641 revolutions per second because that is the specific material consequence of the specific collapse that produced it, of the specific mass, of the inherited rotation. The extraordinary regularity of this rotation, comparable to atomic clocks, is neither coincidence nor design. It is the consequence of three factors: (1) the inherent stability of a rotating rigid body (no significant perturbations alter angular momentum), (2) extremely slow energy dissipation via gravitational radiation (it loses energy so slowly that billions of years will be required to slow it significantly), (3) the absence of material friction (neutron matter possesses no structure permitting deceleration through internal friction). The pulsar rhythms because it is composed of matter that, under those extreme conditions, produces persistence of periodicity.

The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction demonstrates rhythm emerging from pure chemistry, lacking rotational mechanics, lacking gravitational structure. This reactive system, discovered rigorously in the 1960s in Moscow, was initially considered paradoxical, even impossible. The reason: classical thermodynamics assumed chemical reactions tended monotonically towards equilibrium. A reaction ought always to proceed in a single direction until reaching final stability. Development ought to be unidirectional, a single arrow. No oscillation. No recurrence. Merely a tendency towards local thermal death.

The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction contradicts this. It is a pure chemical system, molecules (malonic acid, potassium bromate, ceric sulphate) colliding according to kinetics determined by electron affinities and well-defined reaction constants. No life. No intention. No "feedback" mechanism typical of organisms. And yet: colour oscillates periodically. Blue to red to blue once more. Oscillation persists for hours. It is not damped oscillation that gradually ceases, it is self-sustained. Spatio-temporal waves propagate through the solution, patterns of colour travelling across the vessel, constituting a material structure of pure dynamic chemistry. Non-linearity of kinetics, the fact that the rate of a reaction can be amplified by its own products, allows the system to escape monotonic convergence. The system oscillates because it is far from equilibrium and chemical feedback loops sustain a rhythmic pattern.

The argumentative point: rhythm is not the exclusive property of mechanical systems (such as pulsars) or systems with complex biological feedback structures. It emerges in pure chemical networks, in far-from-equilibrium systems where kinetic non-linearity enables self-organisation and recurrence. Periodicity is a property of certain complex chemical systems operating under constraints preventing simple convergence to equilibrium, constraints that are purely physical, arising from molecular binding energies and collision geometries. Rhythm is ubiquitous, neither rare, nor special, nor exceptional. It is a mode of material organisation across multiple scales, a manifestation of how matter far from equilibrium realises new structures without recourse to intention or life.

Milankovitch cycles demonstrate polyrhythmia on a planetary scale. Earth’s orbital variations, changes in orbital shape (eccentricity, with a period of approximately 100,000 years), axial tilt (obliquity, period of 41,000 years), and axial direction in space (precession, period of 26,000 years), induce periodic fluctuations in solar energy balance reaching the terrestrial surface. Each cycle possesses its own frequency, its characteristic temporal scale, its origin in pure celestial mechanics. Eccentricity reflects reciprocal gravitation between Earth and other planets across eras. Obliquity varies because the Moon and Sun exert torques upon the terrestrial axis. Precession, axial wobble, follows from Earth’s non-sphericity and orbital plane inclination. Three material rhythms, geometrically overdetermined. When overlapping, eccentricity + obliquity + precession operating simultaneously, they interfere mutually, producing a complex pattern of short periods (millennia) and long periods (hundreds of thousands of years). The amplitude of solar irradiance reaching the ground varies accordingly. Climates oscillate, ice sheets advance and retreat, and the terrestrial geological record displays these oscillations impressed upon stratified sediments.

The ontological consequence is radical: reality does not pulse to a single universal beat. There is no central conductor striking time for all matter. There are multiple rhythms coexisting, each with its temporal scale, its characteristic period, its relative autonomy, its origin in specific material mechanisms. Polyrhythmia is an ontological regime, not an exception or accidental complexity. The pulsar rotates in milliseconds. The chemical reaction oscillates in seconds. Earth’s orbit varies over tens of thousands of years. All are real. All constitute the universe simultaneously. They do not compete, they operate across temporal scales that do not intersect. The cosmos is not an orchestrated symphony. It is an aggregate of autonomous rhythms.

Simondon offers a temporal perspective radicalising this. Individuation (which Simondon studies as the process of forming material identities at a pre-biological level) possesses its own phases and thresholds, each with a characteristic duration non-reducible to a general scheme. Each process of individuation, a crystallisation, an organisation of a magnetic field, a condensation of gas into plasma, possesses its specific temporality. It follows no universal clock. It is not "programmed" from without. The crystallisation of a mineral possesses its own times: nucleation (ultra-rapid, microseconds, the time during which atoms find a stable configuration), growth (hours to days depending on supercooling and material availability, time determined by atomic diffusion through the crystal), stabilisation (permanent on geological scales, time during which the configuration resists thermal and mechanical perturbations). Each phase possesses its cadence, determined rigorously by kinetics of atomic diffusion, crystal binding energy, and constraints of the material system in question. Nucleation does not synchronise with growth, one is instantaneous, the other slow. None of these temporal chains is derivable from any other. None is "fundamental" with the others "reducible" to it. Crystallisation follows neither the beat of the preceding chemical reaction, nor do both follow the beat of the pulsar's rotation. Temporality is plural to its roots. Simondon departs from any notion of linear time that "carries" processes as a container carries liquid. Each individuation is the production of its own temporality. This amplifies the result of 1.2: there are not merely multiple rhythms in reality, there are multiple active productions of time, each constitutive of the identity of the process realising it.

Synthesis of argument 1.2: rhythm is prior to measurement and autonomously distributed across material reality. Not a singular cosmic rhythm, multiple rhythms coexisting. Not a universal time, multiple times. Not a single cadence, constitutive polyrhythmia that is an ontological regime, not chaos or confusion. Polyrhythmia is not disorder, it is a regime of organisation where each level of material complexity produces its own emerging periodicity. The pulsar and Milankovitch cycles coexist without conflict: they operate on non-competing time scales. The cosmos is polyrhythmic. Matter is polyrhythmic. Time, at this level, is immanent multiplicity.

1.3. Temporal Plurality and Relativity

If there are multiple material rhythms operating autonomously, then there are multiple times. Relativity provides rigorous and unequivocal proof: there is no singular universal "time" to which all processes synchronise. There are local times depending upon relative motion and gravitational field intensity. This section consolidates the thesis through relativistic physics and philosophical analysis of plural temporality.

Relativistic time dilation is a fundamental phenomenon. Einstein (1905, 1915) established: the rate of passage of time is not a universal constant. It is not invariant. It depends upon relative velocity and gravitational field intensity at a given point. Two observers in different states of motion or fields experience different rates of temporal passage. This discovery dissolves the notion of absolute time that Newton assumed, a time flowing "equably without relation to anything external", existing as a silent background parameter. Relativity renders time local, dependent, bound to material position and dynamics.

Atmospheric muons illustrate this with experimental clarity. Muons are particles created in collisions of cosmic rays with upper air in Earth’s atmosphere. They possess a mean lifetime at rest (in their rest frame) of approximately 2 microseconds. During this mean lifetime, they travel at relativistic speed, close to 0.99 times the speed of light. By classical Newtonian physics, they ought to decay before reaching ground level, there is insufficient time for them to traverse the atmosphere at that velocity.

Yet we observe muons arriving at the surface in substantial numbers. Why? Because in Earth's reference frame (at relative rest to the ground), the rapidly moving muon experiences relativistic time dilation. Its "internal clock" (its radioactive decay, its probability rhythm of disintegration) ticks more slowly in rapid motion. The time passing for the muon in its own frame is less time than passes for a terrestrial observer on the ground. The effect is quantifiable: the Lorentz factor expands available time by the ratio γ = 1/√(1−v²/c²). For v = 0.99c, γ ≈ 7. The muon experiences approximately one seventh of the time a terrestrial observer would measure. Result: the muon possesses sufficient time to reach ground before decaying, not by remaining "young" in a mystical sense, but because its decay clock simply ticks more slowly in that state of motion.

Hafele-Keating (1971) transported atomic clocks on commercial airliners, flying in circumnavigation loops around Earth, and compared them with identical clocks kept on the ground. The aircraft moves at high velocity (800 km/h) and in a different gravitational field (10 km altitude). Both effects matter: velocity introduces special relativistic time dilation; altitude reduces gravitational field, introducing general relativistic time dilation (clocks "run faster" in weaker gravitational fields). The clock on the aircraft loses time in special relativity (more motion), but gains time in general relativity (less gravity). The net effect proved measurable: nanoseconds, yet real. Experimental confirmation demonstrated that even differences of velocity and field so small, relative to cosmic standards, still produce detectable temporal divergence.

GPS (Global Positioning System, operational since 1980) offers a technological application making relativity not merely speculative, but mandatory. Satellites in high orbit (around 20,000 km) experience weaker terrestrial gravitational field intensity and move at rapid orbital velocity (around 3.9 km/s); consequently, their time runs significantly faster than that of clocks on the ground. General relativistic time dilation expands time on the satellite; special relativistic reduces it, the net overall effect is acceleration (each day, the satellite clock gains about 45 microseconds). Lacking relativistic correction, the system would accumulate positioning errors of several kilometres per day, a practical impossibility. Terrestrial navigation via GPS requires positioning algorithms to compensate precisely for these temporal divergences. Relativistic corrections are not an optional refinement of speculative theory. They are an engineering requirement for the system to function. Every satellite navigation operation, from commercial aviation to military operations, from telecommunications to financial transactions, rests upon technical implementation of relativity.

The consequence: there is no absolute temporal parameter to which all reference frames synchronise. Each frame of reference, each system in motion, each point in a specific intensity of gravitational field, possesses its own temporal rate. There is no "time" to which all submit. There are local synchronisations, operational agreements allowing coordination across different references, but these synchronisations are technical constructions, conventions enabling communication between reference frames, not the revelation of a true time hidden in the background.

The plurality of material times follows consequently. If relativity shows that time is local, dependent upon motion, gravitational field, and material structure, and if material processes possess autonomous rhythms (as 1.2 established), then multiple material times coexist throughout the universe:

Atomic oscillation time operates on the scale of 10^-15 seconds or less, femtoseconds. At this scale, electrons rhythm in their quantum orbits, electromagnetic fields oscillate at defined frequencies, matter exists in sub-atomic pulsation.

Chemical reaction time operates on the scale of milliseconds to seconds. At this scale, molecules collide, covalent bonds form and break, reactions proceed according to molecular kinetics. The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction functions on a period of seconds, millions of molecular collisions reorganise material configuration instantaneously, composed of local recombinations.

Stellar rotation time operates on the scale of hours to years. A star rotates, its equatorial surface moves at hundreds of km/h. Rotational period varies by stellar type (red dwarfs rotate slower; hot gas, faster), by differential latitude (poles rotate slower than equator), and by evolution (loss of angular momentum across billions of years).

Orbital evolution time operates on the scale of millions of years. Orbits decay through energy loss (gravitational radiation in compact binary systems), satellites migrate (the Moon recedes from Earth gradually), planetary systems reorganise and reconfigure on a multi-million-year scale.

Radioactive decay time operates on scales from microseconds (highly unstable isotopes, rapid beta emitters) to billions of years (carbon-14, uranium-238, potassium-40). Each radionuclide possesses its characteristic period, half-life ratio, determined by nuclear configuration stability.

None of these times is "more fundamental" than the others. They are not measurements of an underlying "universal time" that would unify them. They are material operations in their immanent cadence, constitutive periodicities of processes derived from physical structures. Synchronisation among these times is a technical question (construction of clocks coordinating references, choice of standard reference frame for operations requiring communication), not the revelation of a single time hidden in depth or origin.

These multiple times are neither measurement conventions nor symbolic constructs superimposed upon a single underlying time. They are genuine material productions. Atomic time is produced by electromagnetic oscillation of electronic transitions, pure material reality. Chemical time is produced by molecular collision dynamics, constrained by determined kinetics. Orbital time is produced by gravitation exerted between bodies, material relation between masses. Radioactive time is produced by nuclear instability, probabilistic decay determined by characteristic half-life. Each is real. None is an appearance of an underlying non-relativistic hidden reality. Synchronisation among these times, permitting a muon to survive atmospheric traversal, a GPS satellite to function accurately, a chemical reaction to oscillate in a legible pattern, is active production of technical relations between scales, not the revelation of true time hidden in the background.

Bachelard (1950) supplies the lexicon for this multiplicity: rhythmanalysis. The temporal texture of material existence is polyrhythmia, interpenetration of temporal scales, intertwining of multiple rhythms operating simultaneously, lacking a supreme unity ordering or summarising them into a single series. Uniform linear time is fiction, a construct of human symbolic regimes requiring the reduction of multiplicity to a continuous line in order to communicate, synchronise, narrate, and transmit. Temporal reality is plural, local, polyrhythmic at its fundamental level. Material operations follow no single line of passage; they produce their own cadences, multiple, divergent, across scales non-reducible to one another.

Synthesis of argument 1.3: rhythm is prior to measurement, exists autonomously in multiple systems operating across disparate scales, and plurality of rhythms translates into plurality of material times. "Time" as a singular universal does not exist, singular material times coexist. Synchronisation among times (clock coordination, choice of standard frame, relativistic correction algorithms) is technical construction, not revelation of deep structure. Relativity generalises this: local time depends upon motion, gravity, and material state. Rhythmanalysis generalises further: each process possesses its own cadence, indifferent to external clocks or narratives claiming to unify. The cosmos is not governed by universal time. It is polyrhythmic.

1.4. Transition: From Rhythm to Permanence

Section 1 established with rigour that rhythm is a fundamental ontological condition of matter: prior to measurement, autonomously distributed, plural and constitutive. But here emerges a tension governing the movement of the chapter. If everything is rhythm, recurrence, periodicity, pulsation, continuous reconfiguration, how does anything remain? If everything flows rhythmically, where is identity? How is permanence reconciled with this fluid, plural temporality?

Philosophical tradition offered answers proving inadequate because they rest upon a false opposition. Parmenides asserted: being is, non-being is not. This signifies immobility, eternity, absence of genuine change. Change is illusion. If something changes, it ceases to be itself, it ceases to be. Therefore, true being cannot change. This position denies real change to preserve identity.

Heraclitus refused this: everything flows. Nothing remains. Becoming is radical, being is processual, continuous transformation. Each moment differs from the preceding. Identity is illusion. This position denies real permanence to preserve change.

Subsequent synthesis oscillated between the two: either permanence was denied (leaving merely flow without identity), or genuine change was denied (confining permanence to immutable substance). Aristotle proposed permanent substance with mutable accidents, but this is merely reformulation: that which changes is superficial, that which endures is atemporal essence. The tension persists.

Truth lies not in accepting one position and rejecting the other. It lies in understanding that the opposition is false because it rests upon a deformed category: the idea that permanence must be immutability. Once this is impossible (everything changes, flow is real), Parmenides must deny flow. Once flow is evident, Heraclitus must deny permanence. Both remain trapped within binary logic: permanence = immutability or change = disappearance of identity.

The challenge opening Section 2 is precisely this: to demonstrate that something can change continuously, rhythmically, and endure simultaneously, without contradiction. How is this possible? The answer is that permanence is not resistance to time. Permanence is not subtraction from becoming. Permanence is a specific mode of temporality, a recognisable pattern of characteristic changes reiterating through material variations.

The Heraclitean river offers an ancient yet un-superseded example. "No man steps twice into the same river," said Heraclitus. This is true: water flows continuously. New molecules arrive, old ones vanish. Were the identity of the river dependent upon the identity of the water molecules composing it, it would be false to call it "the same river", it would be a different river at every instant.

Yet the conclusion is false. The river continues as "the same river" despite (and because of) the water changing. Why? Because fluvial identity is not identity of water molecules. It is a hydrodynamic pattern: defined bank, topographically established bed, flow maintained by gravity, hydrological cycle continuously replenishing water. This operative structure is as rhythmic and regular as any material process, and therefore remains recognisable. The river changes continuously because water passes; it endures because pattern persists.

Permanence does not exclude change. Permanence is a mode of change, change maintaining a recognisable pattern. A chemical reaction is "the same" reaction because it continues doing what it does: transforming reactants into products according to characteristic kinetics, even if initial molecules are completely transformed. Identity resides not in passing matter; it resides in persisting transformation structure. A star is "the same" star not because atoms in its core remain identical, they burn continuously, but because it maintains dynamic equilibrium between radiation pressure (seeking expansion) and gravitational collapse (seeking contraction). This dance remains recognisable across billions of years.

Operative identity subsists through radical material mutation. This holds true on a cosmic scale, but equally on a chemical scale, equally across continuous processes. There is no immutable substance, everything reorganises. But there is rhythmic regularity of operation, pattern that is recognised. Permanence is a temporal function, not an atemporal property. That which allows the river to be "the same" across centuries is that it continues doing what it does, with a recognisable cadence. It ceases to exist when pattern disorganises, when drought dries the bed, when a dam blocks flow.

Section 2 now opening demonstrates rigorously: permanence as material duration, processual continuity wherein constitutive variation maintains a recognisable operative pattern. There is no contradiction between rhythm (periodic change) and permanence (persisting pattern). Rhythm is the mechanism through which permanence is effected. Rhythmic reiteration of characteristic transformation is what allows a thing to remain identifiable.

Permanence is not victory over becoming; it is a mode of recognisable becoming.

2. Permanence and Operative Pattern

2.1. Dissolution of the Permanence/Change Opposition

Philosophical tradition installed a dichotomy never resolved: either becoming is radical and everything changes (Heraclitus, panta rhei, everything flows), or permanence is fundamental and change is illusion (Parmenides, being is immobile and eternal). The consequence was an unproductive bifurcation, one thesis accepted at the cost of denying the other. But this opposition is false. It rests upon a misunderstanding of what "permanence" signifies: it confuses permanence with immutability. Once the misunderstanding is undone, permanence and change reveal themselves not as opposed but complementary, and permanence itself is revealed as a specific mode of temporality.

Heraclitus was correct: nothing is immobile. Becoming is radical, continuous, constitutive. In the same rivers, other waters flow, the image is exact. No water molecule in the river is the same after an interval. Material change is incessant. Parmenides was also correct: something endures. The river is "the same river" across centuries, even as water renews continuously. The identity of the river does not dissolve into perpetual change. How are these two evidences reconciled?

The twin error lies in both. Heraclitus concludes that if everything changes, nothing endures, radical change implies disappearance of identity. Parmenides, seeing that identity persists, concludes that change is appearance, that true being is immutable. Truth is that both conclusions draw false consequences from the same premise: they confuse "permanence" with "immutability" and "change" with "disappearance of identity". No such connection exists. Something can change continuously, radically even, and maintain identity simultaneously. Permanence is not resistance to becoming, not an exception to material flow. It is a specific mode of becoming: a recognisable pattern persisting through constitutive variations.

Aristotelian genealogy provided a solution blocking clarity. Aristotle proposed the distinction between substance (ousia) and accidents (symbebekota): substance is permanent, immutable essence; accidents, colour, size, qualities, change while underlying substance persists. Apparent elegance is deceptive. For substance to "endure" while accidents vary, substance must be, by definition, atemporal, immune to change. Permanence remains absence of temporality, not a temporal mode. Furthermore, identity of substance is postulated, not derived: who decides that thing is the "same" substance through accident variations? Aristotelian response appeals to essence, but essence is conceptual, not material. Substance is theoretical fiction resolving the problem on the level of naming, not on the level of material operation.

Spinoza offered a radically different path. The conatus, immanent effort of each thing to persevere in its being, is neither resistance to change nor conscious volition. It is continuous constitutive activity, requiring neither intention nor a subject "wishing" to persist. A thing "perseveres" so long as it continues doing that which is proper to it, that which is immanent for it to do. This effort does not exclude transformation: it includes it as a structural component. Fire perseveres by burning, combustion is its immanent activity, and changes continuously while burning (fuel is consumed, flame transforms, temperature fluctuates). Operative pattern persists not because it resists change, but because it renews through change, because change is the condition of its continuation. The conatus is key because it dissolves opposition at a fundamental level: permanence is not absence of change, but continuous activity that, precisely through change, maintains and sustains itself.

Bergson took this intuition to radicalisation. Durée, duration, is not a homogeneous line of identical instants (spatialised time, time as a discrete series). It is qualitative heterogeneity, thickness wherein past, present, and future interpenetrate in a living totality. Duration is creativity: not recapitulation of the same, not repetition of an immobile essence, but continuous creation of novelty. Yet creativity signifies neither discontinuity nor rupture. Each moment contains the entire past, compressed, integrated, sedimented within the operative memory of the process. The new emerges from continuity because duration is active retention of the lived, integration transforming without denying what was. Melody illustrates perfectly: each note differs from preceding ones, materially distinct, yet melody persists because each note inherits and transforms the context of prior ones, retains memory of what came before and incorporates it into the sonic present. Melody is not a sum of notes, it is continuous temporal synthesis wherein variation constitutes unity, wherein each difference preserves continuity.

Bergson confined duration to consciousness, to internal experience, to time lived by subjectivity. This is unnecessary limitation, regression to anthropocentrism. Duration is a material property, pure operation independent of any experience. A chemical reaction endures, it maintains immanent temporal continuity, integrates inputs in processual transformation, requires no observing subject. A star endures, it persists rhythmically despite continuous nuclear combustion, operates synthesis of stellar moments across billions of years. The entire physical process is a process of duration: continuous transformation sustaining functional identity, continuity of operation depending not upon consciousness but upon material immanence.

The Heraclitean river is living synthesis, perfect example of operative permanence. The river is "the same river" despite, and because of, water changing continuously. Heraclitus is right: everything flows, nothing resists material change. Parmenides is right: something persists, there is recognisable identity. There is no contradiction because the river is not an aggregate of molecules (which change incessantly), but an operative pattern that persists. What is the river? Not matter passing through it. It is the structure of flow: discharge maintained by gravity, constrained by topography, fed by hydrological cycle. This structure is recognisable, rhythmic, regular, as regular as any material process, as predictable as a heartbeat. Hence the river is "the same river" across millennia, even if every water molecule is replaced countlessly, even if sediment accumulates and erosion remodels the bed. The river is neither substance (water is not river), nor an aggregate of discrete moments. It is continuous operation of oriented flow. And operation persists because conditions sustaining it, slope of terrain, gravitational continuity, precipitation feeding, persist.

Generalisation dissolves the false dilemma: everything operates thus. Identity is not identity of matter (which flows), but regularity of operation (which persists while operation continues). A chemical reaction is "the same" because it maintains transformation pattern, even if initial molecules transform into completely different final molecules. A star is "the same" because it maintains dynamic equilibrium between gravitational collapse and radiation pressure, even if matter in its core burns continuously, transforms into stellar ash, eventually disperses. Permanence is a mode of becoming where constitutive change maintains a recognisable pattern. Death of a system is cessation of this regularity, not disappearance of substrate, but disorganisation of pattern sustaining it.

A crucial consequence: this also dissolves the question of indefinite duration. System endures while operations reiterate, while conditions sustaining them persevere. There is no guarantee of eternity or necessary permanence, chemical reaction continues while reactants exist in appropriate concentration, star while nuclear fuel lasts, organism while coordinated operations continue. Fragility is constitutive: all permanence is always contingent, precarious, depending entirely upon continuation of material conditions. But this does not deny reality of permanence. It is simply the temporal texture of the real: permanence is rhythmic continuation of operation while conditions permit, death is cessation when they cease. There is no eternal permanence, there is only permanence while it endures.

Identity is not a property of substance; it is regularity of operation.

2.2. Identity as Operative Pattern

Now that permanence has been redefined, not as resistance to time but as a recognisable persisting pattern, it is necessary to characterise rigorously what an "operative pattern" is in ontological terms. How does reiteration sustaining identity function materially? What is the structure of an enduring process?

Whitehead provides precise language. Reality is not composed of substances, it is composed of events. Each event is an occasion: discrete irruption, unit of reality occurring and perishing. Occasion is instantaneous relative to other occasions, it exists within its own interval, and within that interval ceases to be. No occasion endures, each is finite, terminal, perishes. Yet occasions do not exist isolated, hovering in a vacuum. They form societies: patterns of successive occasions reiterating the same constitutive structure. The heart is a perfect example: each beat is an occasion, rapid contraction of myocardium, duration measurable in milliseconds, then termination, relaxation. No beat persists. Yet beats form a society: pattern of contraction-relaxation reiterating approximately seventy times per minute, continuously, throughout the animal's life. Identity of the heart is identity of this society, not of any individual occasion.

The concept of perishing is crucial. Continuous death of occasions is not a system defect, not loss. It is system constitution. Reality operates via continuous death, occasions occur and terminate, complete themselves, perish. This is not tragic, it is structural. And precisely because occasions perish, patterns can emerge. Were an occasion to endure eternally, no change would be possible, no variation, no rhythm. Pattern emerges only because occasions terminate, give way to new occasions continuing operation. Identity does not resist perishing, it emerges from it. It is pattern reiteration across continuously dying occasions.

Thus is understood what an operative pattern is. It is transformation regularity reproducing via material immanence, not external imposition. Pattern is not Platonic form, eternal idea from which copies derive. It is a mode of operation reiterating because material conditions sustain it, and sustain it continuously because operation itself regenerates conditions. Star is pattern: equilibrium between gravitational collapse (tending to compress core) and radiation pressure (tending to expand outward). This equilibrium is not "form", it is continuous operation. Star exists while operating this equilibrium. Nuclear fuel creates pressure sustaining star against collapse. While fuel exists, equilibrium persists. When fuel depletes, equilibrium collapses, star ceases to exist as star (transforms into white dwarf, neutron star, or vanishes entirely).

Crystal illustrates order pattern of a different kind. Repeated lattice of atoms, each in "position" bound to neighbours, forming regular geometric structure. Crystal grows because this pattern is energetically stable, lattice extends naturally, each newly deposited atom binds to neighbours and replicates structure. Pattern is not "programmed" in invisible form, it emerges from molecular kinetics, electron affinities, energetic constraints. Lattice is operative pattern because it self-reproduces: each newly integrated atom does exactly what prior atom did, occupies position, forms bonds, sustains lattice continuation.

In no case, neither star nor crystal, is there immutable substance "enduring behind" operations, interior essence manifesting. There are continuous operations reiterating via material immanence, via constraints regenerated by system itself. System persists while operation continues: while material conditions sustain reiteration. Identity is not a fixed property, not essence, it is a function of this operative continuity.

Any example proves this thesis: oscillating chemical reaction (Belousov-Zhabotinsky) is not a "thing" with intrinsic oscillation property. It is a mode of transformation where two processes compete, one consuming catalyst, another regenerating it, creating oscillation. While reactants exist in appropriate concentration, oscillation continues. If reactant depletes, oscillation terminates. "BZ oscillation" identity was a function of process balance, not substantial property. Living organism is not a substantial entity "possessing" separable life property. It is a network of coordinated operations, metabolism transforming nutrients, sensation capturing stimuli, response reacting to environment, reiterating continuously. While these operations remain coordinated (neural integration, blood circulation, cellular respiration), organism persists. If coordination fails (death), operation network disorganises. "Life" identity was a function of operative network, not independently subsisting property.

Simondon offers an even sharper temporal deepening. Individuation is not a process ending in a result, it is a continuous process. System is not a finite, finished "individual". It is individuation in progress. Form distinguishing a system is not essential internal structure, it is a relational aspect of ongoing process. Is growing crystal more "individual" than crystallised crystal? Simondon would state: both are individuation phases, and growing phase retains more potential, more unresolved tension, hence more vitality.

Applying this to permanence: metastable system persists because it retains unresolved tensions. Permanence is not complete resolution, finalisation, that would be death. Permanence is provisional suspension charged with potentials. Growing crystal undergoes cycles: atom deposition (rhythmic incorporation), local stabilisation (force rebalancing), brief pause, new growth. Each cycle is an individuation phase, not a step towards "perfect crystal" (Simondon categorically rejected this), but continuous reiteration of structuring process. Crystal does not "walk towards" perfection, it indefinitely reiterates its relational organisation mode.

This renders temporal permanence far deeper than mere occasion reiteration. It is not merely that occasions succeed one another, it is that they succeed charged with potential. Each phase retains prior phase tensions, rebalances them, produces new phase carrying new tensions. System endures because it is always at risk, always charged with transformative potential. Permanence is structured fragility, vulnerability sustaining itself because operations continue regenerating it.

Necessary refusal: Simondon conceived the "pre-individual" as a reserve of indetermination progressively resolving into individuation. Position defended here rejects this. Material excess does not resolve, it persists. Tensions do not transform into final harmonies. They merely temporarily rebalance, originating new tensions, new potential, new cycle. Permanence is fragile and living precisely because it walks towards no resolution, it walks merely towards more becoming.

Synthesis: temporal identity is not substance identity, it is operation regularity. What makes a thing "the same" over time is not that an interior essence persists immutable (contradiction with continuous change). It is that it continues doing that which is immanent for it to do. Death of a system, cessation of identity, is not disappearance of material substrate (star atoms do not vanish when star dies). It is disorganisation of operative pattern sustaining that identity. When pattern disorganises, system ceases to exist in that form, even if matter persists reorganised in other forms.

2.3. Differentiating Repetition and Functional Recognisability

If permanence operates through pattern reiteration, a question arises seeming to compromise entire analysis: if everything changes, if matter continuously passes, if each occasion perishes, if each individuation cycle differs from prior, how does recognisability persist? How can identity exist if each instance is singular?

Answer rests upon radical transformation of understanding repetition. Repetition is not iteration of identical, exact copy of a model. Every repetition is already difference. Deleuze articulated this with precision: to repeat is never to do the same. Performance of musical piece is repetition of composition, but never identical to prior performances. Pianist brings slightly different tempo, particular dynamic nuance, own interpretation. Piece remains "the same piece" despite no performance being exact copy of another. Recognisability depends not upon perfect identity, it depends upon sufficient structure for variation to be recognised as variation of a pattern, not irruption of chaos. This is essential point: living repetition is that carrying variation within constraints preserving functionality. It is not mechanical repetition, machine producing identical copies. It is repetition operating within margins, tolerating fluctuation, subsisting through difference.

This understanding is no aesthetic metaphor. It is description of material operation.

Generalising materially: dividing cell repeats cell division process, but division is never identical to prior. Small genetic variations accumulate, metabolic context differs, biophysical conditions flow. Yet daughter cell is recognised as "same" cell because it maintains characteristic functional properties, similar metabolism, DNA replication, environmental signal response. Growing crystal repeats atomic deposition pattern, but each layer deposits under slightly different pressure, temperature, concentration conditions. Structure remains recognisable, hexagonal lattice, characteristic optical properties, not because growth conditions are identical, but because electrochemical constraints governing molecular organisation remain the same. Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction oscillates between two chemical states, red/blue colouration, periodically. Each colouration cycle is pattern repetition, but with microscopic fluctuations in duration, intensity, molecular conformation. Oscillation persists recognisable not despite fluctuations, but through them, microscopic fluctuations are constitutive part of how reaction maintains periodic regime.

Functional recognisability is objective operation, not observer's subjective judgment. This is critical point. It is not that "we recognise" pattern and name it, as if recognition were consciousness act projected onto neutral matter. It is that material systems continue interacting with one another differentially, according to pattern, independently of any observer. Daughter cell interacts with nutrients, environmental signals, other cells, exactly as mother cell did, not because it is "identical", but because it maintains functional properties determining material interaction modes. Whole crystal interacts with light in characteristic ways (refraction, reflection, birefringence), not because it "looks equal" to observer, but because physical properties derived from lattice structure continue producing same electromagnetic effects. Oscillating reaction interacts with electrodes, other chemical reactants, in predictable ways, not because observer "recognised" reaction and attributed meaning to it, but because thermodynamic properties governing chemical kinetics remain exactly same. Objectivity of recognisability is this: system carries own material intelligibility. It needs no conceptual translation to "be" what it is.

Quantum particles offer an example initially appearing paradoxical yet decisively clarifying. Two electrons are qualitatively identical, exactly equal physical properties (same elementary charge, same rest mass, same intrinsic spin). But they are not numerically identical, there exists no "this electron" in contrast to "that electron". There are merely "two electrons", without ontological possibility of distinguishing one from another by number. Quantum indistinguishability shows numerical identity of individual to be an inadequate category for matter base structures. What matters ontologically is type identity: both are electrons, behave same way under same conditions, produce same effects in interactions. Each electron "is permanent" in precise sense that its properties are invariant, charge never changes, rest mass never changes. This signifies not that "same individual electron" persists over time as distinguishable singular entity. It signifies that electron type persists, that defining properties of type reiterate without alteration in every instance. Permanence is type permanence, not individual permanence.

This observation bears a profound implication repositioning whole permanence question. If identity is type identity, if what persists is property invariance, not numerical identity of individual, then permanence is categorically different from eternity. Type can persist without needing individual persistence. Electrons constantly change, are born, annihilate, create anew in nuclear reactions, but electron type persists because defining properties remain invariant. Life on Earth changed radically over billion years, no individual organism of ancestral species survived, but biological processes persist because material constraints regulating replication, metabolism, evolution remain same. Permanence as type identity is contingent not despite changing individuals, but because it changes. It is precisely through continuous death of individuals that type endures without ossifying into eternal form. Each new generation of molecules, each new organism, each pattern iteration executes type in slightly different manner, incorporates microscopic variations, local adaptations, present condition responses. This is vitality: not mechanical uniformity, but flexibility within constraints.

This observation generalises to macroscopic processes radically. Most operative permanence we observe functions by type identity, not numerical identity of discrete individual. Repeating chemical process is "the same process" because same molecules, under same conditions, undergo same transformations, not because singular molecule persists unaltered, but because reaction pattern is determined by electrochemical affinities and energetic constraints remaining rigorously equal. Biological necessity, continuous metabolism, cellular renewal, nutrition cycle, makes clear that living body permanence occurs not through matter constancy (matter entirely renewed in seven-year cycle in many tissues), but through type, pattern, functionality constancy. It is not necessary that "same molecule" persist. It is necessary that functional properties determining process continue present.

Death offers contrasting and decisive proof. When operative pattern ceases reproducing, system dies, ceases to exist in that form. Death is not material substance disappearance. Descartes asked: if soul leaves body, where goes matter? Confused death with total elimination. Death is pattern cessation, transformation beyond maintenance capability. Star dies when nuclear fuel depletes: equilibrium between nuclear fusion (producing outward radiation pressure) and gravitational collapse (compressing inward) ceases. Radiation pressure fades because mass fusion ceases. Gravitational collapse dominates entirely. Star does not "vanish", matter persists, conserved, but transforms radically: white dwarf (if insufficient mass for neutron collapse), neutron star (if intermediate mass), black hole (if very large mass). "That star" identity terminates because operative pattern maintaining it as star ceased. Biological death functions identically. When coordinated physiological functions cease, fluid circulation, cellular respiration, neural integration, organism dies. Atoms do not vanish, evaporate, annihilate. Transform in decomposition, reabsorbed by soil, reincorporated in other biological systems. But operative pattern that was "that body" disorganises, disintegrates. Body is not substance that was "lost", it is pattern that disintegrated, reorganised in different systems, ceased constituting itself as that specific body.

Radical philosophical consequence of this observation: were permanence resistance to time, subtraction from becoming (as Parmenides imagined proposing immutable being), death would be incomprehensible, arbitrary being annulment, tragically absurd event, metaphysical order violation. But death is perfectly comprehensible, intelligible, necessary, precisely because permanence is becoming mode, not exception to it. Systems die because they are processes, not substances. Processes depend upon continuous conditions for subsistence. When conditions alter radically, when fuel depletes, when homeostasis fails, when material interaction networks detach, process terminates. Death is no natural order violation. It is logical, immanent, necessary consequence of system being material operation, not immobile substance. Fatal, inevitable, inescapable character of death is index that operative life, rhythmic permanence, is constitutively contingent, not guaranteed, not necessary, susceptible to cessation. No guarantee inscribed in real that continuation occurs. Pattern persists while persisting, while sustaining conditions maintain, and ceases when conditions cease sustaining it.

Death confirms definitively that permanence is not eternity. It is contingent duration, charged with structural precariousness, depending upon continuation of ever-precarious conditions. System operates by continuous occasion death, each occasion perishes giving place to next occasion, by pattern reiteration across continuous perishing. This is real texture of permanence: living operation, not eternal immutability; condition-dependent process, not self-sufficient substance; contingent duration, not necessary eternity.

2.4. Transition: From Permanence to Reconfiguration

Section 2 established that permanence is not resistance to time, not an exception to becoming, but a specific mode of temporality: a recognisable operative pattern reiterating through constitutive variations. River water changes continuously, yet river endures. Star fuel depletes gradually, yet equilibrium persists while fuel lasts. Body ages, cells die, replaced, properties change, yet body remains recognisable across decades. This is permanence: not immutability, but continuous operation sustaining functional identity.

Yet permanence does not exhaust material temporality modes. Another change modality exists, radically different: not rhythmic change, but structural change. Not pattern reiteration, but reconfiguration.

Example illustrates contrast clearly. Heart beats at regular rhythm, seventy times per minute, continuously, across years. Each beat is microscopic variation, yet pattern persists identically. Cardiac frequency is "rhythmic permanence". But consider water: at -1°C under normal pressure, water is liquid, molecules in continuous motion, lacking long-range order, maximum indifference and mobility. Lower temperature to -10°C. Abruptly, water crystallises, transforms into solid ice with rigid hexagonal lattice. Same molecules (H₂O), same electrochemical affinities, exactly same laws. But relational organisation changed totally, where indifference reigned, now order; where mobility, now rigidity; where fluidity, now crystallisation. Entirely new emergent properties (hardness, optical structure, thermal properties) appear. This is no rhythm, it is reconfiguration. Not pattern continuation, structure transformation.

Question driving Section 3: what changes when something reconfigures? Not matter, molecules remain H₂O. Not laws, electromagnetic relations governing chemical bonding change not. It is relational organisation: how units relate to one another, what bonds form, what structures emerge, what constraints operate. Reconfiguration is relational reorganisation at point where system becomes unable to maintain prior pattern.

Overly powerful metaphor blocking clarity must be rejected: time flow metaphor. Since Heraclitus, time was conceived as flow, a current "carrying" events, "transporting" them from future to past. Bergson rigorously criticised this: flow is spatial metaphor applied to time. Imagining time as river where events flow downstream, travel, carried forward. Metaphor powerful yet deceptive. Assumes transport, movement from one place to another. Implies space where time flows.

Point is material processes "flow nowhere". Chemical reaction is not water in river "running", reconfigures in same place. Combustion reaction transports no matter; transforms it. Star does not "advance" in time, reconfigures continuously: hydrogen fuses into helium, radiation pressure rebalances gravity, internal structure reorganises each thermonuclear cycle. When fuel depletes, star does not "stop", reconfigures radically into white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole, as mass dictates. None of these processes is "flow". All are local reconfiguration, relation transformation, continuous input integration (reactants, energy, gravitational constraints) into structure reorganisation.

Alternative: abandon flow metaphor, or at least recognise it as metaphor, denying process immanent repose. Time does not flow. Time reconfigures. Reconfiguration is relation reorganisation, continuous past integration transformed into present constituted by this integration. No transport, merely immanent, processual, local transformation. Past does not "flow" to present, retained, integrated, absorbed, and integration is present.

If permanence is temporality mode (persisting recognisable rhythm), and reconfiguration another mode (relational reorganisation transforming structure), Section 3 must inquire: how operates this reconfiguration? What is integration dynamics? How articulate past, present, future in change not merely rhythmic? How material constraints, immanent conditions, determine what reconfiguration type possible? How form emerges from processual?

Permanence is rhythmic breathing, cadence sustaining while conditions feed it. Reconfiguration is metamorphosis, qualitative structure change where prior operation ceases and new operation germinates.

3. Reconfiguration and Irreversibility

3.1. Time as Transforming Integration

Reconfiguration is not flow. Time does not transport events from one «place» to another, leaving an inerte residual past behind. Were that so, the present would ever be empty, the actual occasion would be a pure point lacking inheritance, lacking material memory, lacking context. Yet this contradicts immanent evidence: any present configuration is entirely saturated with past. The stone wall carries the history of erosions shaping it. Present atmosphere registers compositions of prior eras. Grown crystal is synthesis of what preceded it. Past vanishes not, it integrates.

Whitehead provides precise language for this integration. Each actual occasion, in its concrescence process, leaves not prior moments behind. Concrescence signifies growing-together: actual occasion is synthesis where past is captured and reorganised into new form. Technical term is prehension, from Latin prehendere, to capture. Yet «capture» signifies not intellectual apprehension, as if past were independent entity present occasion reached at distance. Signifies: constitutive integration. Past is present, crystallised in present structure. Actual occasion is no rupture point with prior, it is continuation where synthesis seizes selectively.

What this reveals is present thickness. Present is not instantaneous. It is process, integration phase where actual occasion takes possession of what came before, reorganises it, transforms it into living context. When this phase terminates, occasion perishes (ceases being «present») and becomes integrated memory, past now incorporated in next occasion. Time is series of successive integrations, each capturing what came before and transforming it according to material constraints present occasion faces.

Whitehead refuses, therefore, linear image: absolute past → instantaneous present → empty future. In its place offers: each moment is synthesis process where prior occasions are prehended (constitutively captured), reorganised, and integrated. Future is not empty because present synthesis carries potential, what present occasion actualises delimits space of possibles next occasion can prehend. No rupture, processual continuity.

Integration selectivity deserves special emphasis. It is not that all prior conformities are indiscriminately captured. Concrescence, in real operation, selects according to material constraints. Forming molecule integrates merely compatible orbitals, energetically viable bonds. What would enter into contradiction with present configuration, bonds requiring energy above available, orbitals already occupied, is automatically excluded. Selectivity is necessary operation, not arbitrary choice. Actual occasion "chooses" not to integrate, integrates according to what material structure permits.

This bears profound ontological consequence: reconfiguration produces not uniformity or total synthesis. Produces selective, partial synthesis, charged with un-realised possibilities. Actual occasion actualises certain potentialities leaving others open. Past is not completely integrated, integrated selectively. Remains ever, in any present, past remnants not prehended, potentials current synthesis actualised not. Remnants remain charged, ready for integration in future occasion under different constraints. Matter is permanently dense with un-consumed potential.

Molecule in chemical reaction is precise material example of this selective integration. When two atoms collide in solution, present occasion (collision) integrates prior states: electronic configuration of each preceding atom, available orbitals, relative energies. Synthesis (new bond) reorganises states into lower energy configuration. No transport, local synthesis where what was (prior states of separate atoms) is integrated into new form (bound molecule). Resulting molecule carries history: carries orbital compatibility, binding energy specific to pair, resulting configuration. History remains integrated, next reaction, molecule operates according to present structure, not prior to bonding. Each reconfiguration leaves persisting conformity.

Analogously, geological strata are archive of temporal integration through layer differentiation. Each rock layer registers past era: characteristic mineral composition, diagenesis temperature, burial pressure, sediment nature, all leave permanent conformity in mineral structure. Geologist reads in present configurations of geological eras past, not because past «left messages» conceptual, but because past incorporated in present structure. Rock is not exterior to past producing it. Integrated synthesis of that past materialised in present mineralogy. Present mineralogical configuration dense with history, each crystal, bond, element proportion carries operations forming it. Integrated past legible, legible not as symbolic inscription, but as persisting material conformity. Mineral pattern reveals environment; colour reveals temperature; crystal size reveals consolidation speed. Legibility retroactive: we read past only because present carries it materialised. Past left no messages for us to read. Past persists as structure.

Consequence profound: reconfiguration is not substitution of one configuration by another, as if prior were swept out of existence. Transforming integration where what was integrated persists as structure conditioning what comes. Past flows not away; integrates in present carrying it transformed, operationalises it, builds upon it. Each reconfiguration carries history making it possible, carries not as information or psychological memory, but as persisting material conformity, conditioning future operations, operationalising constraints. Time is no line with arrow transporting, continuous series of syntheses reorganising selectively past into present forms, successive, each denser with history than prior, carrying un-actualised potentials future reconfigurations can realise.

Generalising without recourse to proto-experience or Whiteheadian cosmology: in any material system, present is past synthesis under present material constraints. Molecule in chemical reaction integrates prior configuration (energy states prior, preceding conformations) reorganising according to electrochemical affinities and energetic availability. No transport, local synthesis.

McTaggart offers complementary diagnosis of linearity traps. Time Series A (past/present/future as changing properties) appears to create circularity: same event simultaneously in past (after), present (now), and future (before). How can property change from «being in future» to «being in present» to «being in past»? If present is objective and permanent event property, then cannot be true event was «yet to come» nor «completely past». Series A generates contradiction.

Yet McTaggart's conclusion, time is illusion, is refused here. Error lies not in time. Lies in conceiving present as immobile event property. Present is no property, mode of integration. Event is «present» when integrated in current synthesis process (prehended by ongoing occasion). Ceases being «present» when new occasion integrates it selectively as memory (as past). Change is not event change, regime integration change. Series A describes correctly: «being-present» property transitions from X to Y according to occasions integrating them. No contradiction, radical temporality, real operation where integration reorganises what was. Tree growth rings exemplify transforming integration precisely. Each ring represents a cambial growth year. Ring width registers year climate conditions: abundant rain = wide ring (rapid cambium growth), drought = narrow ring (reduced growth), pests and perturbations = irregular ring (unequal growth). Present tree configuration not independent of history producing it. 1950 ring there, within present structure, as materialised as 2025 ring. Tree «left not behind» 1950 growth. Integrated in structure, transformed into ring sustaining subsequent rings, part of material coordination allowing future growth. Past vanished not to region called «past». Past remains integrated, visible, legible, active in present structure.

3.2. Irreversibility and Emergence

Yet integration bears radical consequence: it is irreversible. Once past has been prehended, incorporated, and transformed in present occasion, it cannot be disintegrated. Cannot return to prior state. This bears profound ontological implications for time arrow and novelty emergence.

Time arrow is no movement direction, like arrow in space pointing towards destination. Direction of integration: constitutive impossibility of disintegrating integrated, separating synthesised, returning to prior configuration. Prigogine emphasised irreversibility is no statistical illusion resulting from ignorance. Boltzmann and Laplace viewed time arrow as information lack consequence: sufficient data would allow predicting past with precision identical to future, and temporal direction would vanish. Against this, Prigogine argued irreversibility is constitutive property of real.

Thermodynamics second law, entropy increases, states not simply «we know less of future». States: dissociated gas mixture remixes not spontaneously into separate components. Entropy increases because high entropy states number vast superior to low entropy. No mere statistical count. Material structure of real: what integrated in high entropy configuration (disorganisation) returns not spontaneously to low entropy (prior order). Integration irreversible because future possibles space vast while prior-future (regression) extremely reduced. Matter regress not for deep statistical reasons: infinitely more ways of being disorganised than organised.

Consequence ontological: time possesses genuine direction, not because force drags it, but because integration constitutively irreversible. Present occasion integrates past transforming it. Synthesis undoes not. Next occasion integrates that transforming again. No return.

Prigogine mobilises three key concepts: dissipative structures (order emerging far from equilibrium where systems exchange energy with environment), time arrow (irreversibility as real property), and bifurcations (at certain critical points, multiple futures possible). Central gain retained is irreversibility as fundamental ontological property, not mere open systems consequence. Time arrow no illusion nor convention, mode matter behaves constitutively.

Cost refused divides into three operations: First, Prigogine views dissipation (energy loss to environment) as self-organisation engine. Refused radically here, excess (material difference, heterogeneity) is engine, not dissipation. Dissipation consequence, not cause. Second, Prigogine reduces irreversibility to systems exchanging energy with environments, "open systems". Here: irreversibility intrinsic real property, immanent operation of any material reconfiguration. Third, Prigogine views irreversibility as emerging from probabilities, more high entropy states than low, hence regression extremely improbable. Here: insufficient. Irreversibility constitutive property, not probabilistic. Integration cannot undo because material operation, not because improbable.

Re-formulation: irreversibility is material property of reconfiguration processes.

What Prigogine intuits but fully develops not is irreversibility as immanent operation of any material process, not merely thermally open systems. Radicalisation made here. Closed systems (in theory, isolated from any environmental exchange) also undergo irreversible reconfiguration. Particle colliding with another integrates collision so no spontaneous return, not because universe entropy increases (open systems argument), but because integration material operation undoing not.

Prigogine focuses on bifurcations, critical points where system can evolve in multiple directions. Correct, yet incomplete. Added here: not merely multiple future possibles (bifurcations), but multiple pasts that could have led to present (integrated contingent history). Present reconfiguration carries particular history, collisions occurring, bonds forming, patterns emerging. Another history would have produced different present. Irreversibility not merely prospective (multiple futures) but retrospective (particular non-recyclable history).

Emergence, therefore, double: prospective emergence (non-determined future novelty) and retrospective emergence (history explaining present without reduction to laws). Not all written in beginning. Not all explicable by initial laws plus chance. Genuine operation where reconfiguration leaves configuration being history, configuration existing not had other contingencies operated. Once system reorganises, integrates reconfiguration in structure so return to prior state not merely improbable, ontologically impossible without new reconfiguration of equivalent magnitude. Stronger than Prigogine yet rooted in Prigogine's intuition: genuine time direction exists, not apparent direction caused by ignorance.

Yet irreversibility is no consummation, degeneration, form loss. Integration. Past annulled not, preserved transformed. And precisely because reconfiguration integrates without return, can be productive. Integration can generate properties non-existent previously.

Dissipative structures offer concrete example of how irreversibility produces order. Bénard structure (Rayleigh-Bénard convective cell) very simple phenomenon: fluid heated from below produces circulatory motion patterns. Weak heating, fluid remains inerte, lacking gradient, engine. Heating exceeds critical threshold, spontaneous motion arises, circulation rolls, precise geometric patterns. Order arises not despite dissipation (heat loss outward), but because energy dissipation creates temperature difference motivating motion. Energy flux through system (energy enters heat, leaves radiation) produces material organisation, patterns persisting while flux maintains.

Point: structures genuinely produced by reconfiguration. Exist not "latent" in Platonic potential. Emerge when conditions (temperature gradient, flux magnitude) reach specific thresholds. Vanish when conditions change (remove heating, patterns fade). Yet while existing, real matter conformities, genuine organisation non-existent prior. Irreversibility guarantees organisation, once arisen, leaves conformity: system "learned" certain patterns possible. Future reconfigurations, even under different conditions, will possess "memory" organisation was possible.

Phase transitions demonstrate with clarity. Liquid water transforms into solid ice. Molecules identical: H₂O. Relational bonding changes radically. Liquid water, molecules in continuous motion, constant flow, electromagnetic bonds making and unmaking each instant. Ice, electromagnetic cohesion triumphs over thermal kinetics, molecules fixing in hexagonal crystal lattice. Structuring relations transformed. With transformation, entirely new properties emerge.

Ice solid, resists continuous deformation. Water liquid, flows. Ice crystal structure, specific geometric order, constant molecular orientation. Water amorphous, continuous disorganisation, lacking crystal symmetry. Ice floats, density less than water (anomaly caused by hydrogen bonds creating space between molecules in hexagonal lattice). Water submerges, density greater (molecules pack denser when in continuous motion). None of these properties, floatability, solidity, crystal structure, exists as «hidden potentiality» in water. Revealed not by transition. Emerge genuinely when material relations reorganise.

Dissipative structures reveal how irreversibility produces order. Bénard cell (fluid heated from below) exemplifies: thermal gradient exceeds critical threshold, circulation patterns spontaneously emerge. No external imposition, energy fluxing through system. Cold fluid moves upward (loses heat), warm fluid moves downward (absorbs heat). Continuous flux (energy dissipation) sustains organised geometric patterns, Bénard rolls in hexagonal or cylindrical configuration according to parameters.

Critical point: while energy flows (dissipation occurs), order persists. Remove thermal gradient, patterns vanish, system returns to inertia. But order existing during energy flux leaves conformity: system "learned" those patterns possible, that organisation can emerge under those conditions. Future perturbations, even different, possess "memory" organisation was possible. Matter retains conformity, psychologically not, structurally: prior reconfiguration left asymmetries, weak crystallographic preferences, future reconfigurations can reactivate.

Bénard emergence genuine: pattern existed not prior (hidden potential not). Emerges when conditions (gradient, viscosity, thermal conductivity) combine critically. Vanishes when conditions change. Yet while existing, real matter conformity, order non-existent without dissipation, energy flux, continuous reconfiguration. Irreversibility condition of that order: energy dissipated returns not, system cannot return, order leaves permanent conformity. How emergence true, not illusory: arises genuinely, persists while conditions sustain, leaves integrated conformity when terminating.

Emergence no Platonism, transcendent form revelation hidden in matter. Genuine novelty production through relational reconfiguration. «Float» property in potential not in water (waiting water to be water manifesting hidden capability). Emerges when molecular arrangement changes. Property belongs to configuration, not substance. Configuration changes, property generated.

Yet distinction bears profound consequence. Reconfiguration irreversible, signifying emergence true, no novelty simulation, nor mere appearance something new arises. Water becoming ice returns not spontaneously to prior form merely weather warms. Crystallisation material reconfiguration whose reversal requires equivalent magnitude reconfiguration. Specific ice properties, hexagonal structure, crystal rigidity, integrated in prior form (specific molecular lattice) volatilise not. Reconfiguration leaves conformity: order emerging integrated, persists as material structure affecting everything coming after.

Reconceptualised irreversibility no consummation nor death. No inevitable degradation towards equilibrium. Productive integration where each reconfiguration leaves structure next reconfiguration inherits and builds upon. No regression to prior states, advance in material novelty, integrated structure accumulation, property generation matter prior possessed not, conformities persisting.

3.3. Past, Present, Future Reconfigured

Reconfiguration transforms the three temporal dimensions. They are not independent entities, past as a region where events «go» and disappear, present as an instantaneous point where «now» operates, future as a void to be filled. They are modes of material integration.

The past exists not as a region. It exists as an internal dimension of the present. The present configuration registers the conditions that produced it. Present geological strata carry geological eras within them, not as subjective psychological memory, but as integrated material conformity. Present sedimentary rock is a synthesis of sediment deposition, subsequent weight compression, and mineral alteration as temperature and pressure evolved. The geological past is not «before» in time, it is present in structure. The geologist reads the past not because the rock left legible «messages» or «marks». He reads it because the past is incorporated in present configuration. Present structure is dense with material history.

Simondon describes this through non-conscious memory. The metastable system retains history not as consciousness (which would be anthropomorphism), but as a tension structure charged with potential. The crystal grown in a saturated solution «remembers» deposition conditions in its lattice, in irregularities, discontinuities, weakness points revealing how it crystallised. The crystal has no consciousness. Yet its material conformity is memory, present configuration is integrated conformity of prior process. Sedimentary rock «remembers» eras in stratification, mineral composition of each layer registers the environment in which it deposited. This is no metaphor. Material memory is the mode whereby any system integrates its history into present structure.

Consequence: the past is ever present, integrated in configuration, tension, conformity. No «before» exists, exists as an internal dimension of the present. Matter that is present is matter carrying its past incorporated. No present configuration is virgin. All are saturated with prior process, relations producing it, states from which it emerges.

The present is no point. It is process, continuous integration phase. Whitehead: concrescrescence as that which makes present. Actual occasion is process of capturing past, reorganising it, transforming it into new synthesis. This process is not instantaneous. Duration possesses temporal thickness. Integration takes time, continuous process, not discrete transition between «before» and «after». Continuous flux of synthesis phases, each partially overlapping preceding.

The present is thick.

Actual occasion is synthesis in operation. Not static point where properties converge, process where past prehended, reconfigured, transformed into present context. This process possesses real duration. Not instantaneous. Actual occasion "takes time", phase where concrescence occurs, where priors selected integrated, where new synthesis emerges.

When Whitehead states occasion "perishes" (terminates synthesis process), this signifies not disappearance. Signifies regime transition: occasion ceases being «present» becoming «integrated past» in next occasion. Yet remains as integrated conformity conditioning all coming. Prior present and new present disconnected not, successive phases of continuous operation where each synthesis carries prior integrated. True continuity, no mere disconnected moments stringing.

Space-time is no prior container where these occasions occur. Space-time generated by occasions as they reconfigure. Each synthesis produces spacing, relational difference between occasions, and temporality, irreversible integration sequence. No "before" space-time where occasions exist. Merely reconfiguration operation where space-time emerges as relational structure. Charged with history (past integrated in structure sustaining present synthesis) and charged with open possibilities (future that may or may not be actualised as reconfiguration unfolds). In this present thickness, past still alive, as integrated memory conditioning present synthesis. And future already alive, as potential present occasion may or may not realise, according as material constraints and contingency operate.

The three temporal dimensions are not separate entities or distinct space-time regions. Relations reconfiguration establishes each moment. Past integration relation, what was, incorporated in what is. Present synthesis relation, process where integration occurs. Future potential relation, what may come, charged in present structure.

Consequence: all three dimensions simultaneously real. Past no "less real" than present, as real, integrated in present structure. Future no "less real" than past, as real, charged as potential in present. Yet relation between them operative, not representational. Three static universe copies (past, present, future) existing in parallel not. Three aspects of single operation: reconfiguration where what was integrated, synthesis occurs, what may be remains open.

"Time passage" is this continuous integration-synthesis-opening operation. Not time moving through present. Present is what moves, actual occasion operating, reconfiguration executing, synthesis occurring. Occasion terminates, present that was becomes integrated past. New occasion arises, charged with prior integration, repeating cycle. Genuine movement, no space displacement, continuous reconfiguration operation.

Actual occasion synthesis in operation, not «place where» things occur, but occurring itself. Whitehead insists with rigour: concrescence no process taking time (as if prior time where occurring). Concrescence is temporality, what makes time. Occasion accomplishes synthesis, prehending reorganising, in that act creation of duration, passage, irreversibility. No "before" concrescence where time already existed. Merely reconfiguration generating time.

Radicalisation dissolves being and becoming dichotomy. Being not opposed to becoming. Being is becoming, continuous operation where occasions synthesise, past integrated, future generated. Stating something "is" (exists) stating reconfiguring now. Stability characterising objects (table remains table) merely very regular, predictable reconfiguration pattern, conformity persisting through successive syntheses because sustaining conditions remain stable. Yet even "stability" continuous operation, no repose. Table permanent synthesis of microscopic occasions, atoms reconfiguring, bonds reaffirming each instant. Appears static only because reconfiguration rhythmically constant no perturbation disorganises.

Future not empty to be filled. Determined not, region where events occurred unknown to us not. Future open potentiality. What can happen, lacking certainty of what will happen. Simondon describes through metastability: system charged with unresolved tensions, ready for transformation. Tensions define possible futures space, what materially can happen. Determine not which future actualised.

Consider water supercooled to minus five degrees Celsius. Water liquid, thermodynamically unstable. Possesses potential to crystallise, ice hexagonal lattice lower energy configuration. Change occurs not spontaneously. Why? Absence of crystal germ, nucleation centre triggering crystallisation. Can germ appear? Yes, thermal fluctuation, contaminating particle falling in water, countess microscopic contingencies. When appear? Indetermined. Appear? Perhaps, water remain liquid indefinitely in metastability, no law determining germ must appear specific time. Future charged with possibilities (crystallisation possible), open in actualisation (crystallisation contingent).

Simondon describes metastability as permanent ontological regime. Metastable system not in equilibrium, carries unresolved tensions, potentials triggering reconfiguration. Precise description: metastability no exceptional state of some systems. Constitutive regime of all organised matter. Any material configuration carries un-actualised potentials: modes of reorganising, conformities assuming if conditions changed sufficiently. Individuation, process whereby system reconfigures from one form to another, never complete. System arrives never at «resolving» all tensions in final repose state. Permanently charged with potential, ready for transformation. Future open because system constitutively metastable.

Signifies no teleology, metastability «tends» nor «aspires» not towards predestined end. No «telos» inscribed in material structure. Merely tension charging, potential actualising or not according to microscopic contingencies (thermal fluctuations, random collisions, particle encounters). Ice melts temperature rising, not because «tending» water as true or final form, but electromagnetic cohesion yielding thermal kinetics under new constraint. Without determinism, programming, orientation towards an end. Merely open potential, charged tension, contingent future.

Physical distinction between time-parameter and time-operation crucial here. Physics uses time-parameter (coordinate t in equations, independent variable). Abstraction. Useful tool, allows mathematising, predicting, calculating trajectories in space-time. Real time no parameter. Operation: mode matter reconfigures, integrates, transforms. Exterior coordinate to objects not. Immanent material reorganisation process. No contradiction between model and reality. Time-parameter representation of time-operation, no falsity. Confusing model with reality ontological error. Processes «in time t» as immobile objects in geometric container not. Temporal through and through. Time operation, what matter does reorganising, integrating, transforming.

3.4. Transition to the Following Chapter

The chapter established the deep core: time is continuous reconfiguration integrating past into modified present, is irreversible (integration undoes not once consolidated), is productive (can generate emergent properties non-existent precedentally), is open to future (potential real and material yet contingent in actualisation). Form emerges temporally, not addition of time to static form, but operation where form permanent synthesis of rhythmic reconfigurations. Persisting order (preceding chapter) revealed true dimension: no stasis nor repose, continuous temporal operation, permanent synthesis, material integration leaving structure conditioning what comes.

Yet question advances inexorably. If reconfiguration can be productive, if material integration can genuinely generate emergent properties, how complexity emerges from simple systems? No teleology. No program nor end inscribed in initial conditions. Reconfiguration processual leaving integrated structure affecting next reconfiguration. Contingent accumulation: each reconfiguration inherits prior structure, operationalises it, uses for new reconfiguration. Lacking finality, yet with profound cumulative effects.

Successive reconfigurations return not to prior states, each time integrating what was, in forms denser with history. Complexity not necessary (written destiny not), yet possible and, once occurring, remains integrated. Complex molecule forming remains material conformity, returns never simply to constituents. Large scale structure emerging (crystal, dissipative structure) leaves conformity in real, conditions all coming after.

Question opening next movement: to what extent complexity genuinely contingent? Limits existing? Attractors, modes towards which reconfiguration tends without determining? Complexity laws matter blindly follows? Present chapter provided affirmative answer to implicit opening: yes, complexity can emerge from relatively simple reconfigurations by temporal accumulation lacking teleology. Next chapter faces inverse question with radicality: to what extent reconfiguration free? What material constraints operate? What structures persist through reconfigurations?

Formal articulation: prior Part (preceding chapter) founded form as dynamic structure, immutable essence not, pattern of relations persisting through perturbations. Present Section 3 section temporalises that form, shows time exterior to form not, immanent continuous reconfiguration operation. Next movement (following chapter) will answer final question: how complexity, large scale order, increasingly sophisticated organisations, emerges from simple processes?

Not as telos, not as law. Material consequence of irreversible, selective, productive reconfiguration. Each reconfiguration integrates past opening future possibilities. When reconfiguration productive (generates emergent properties), leaves conformity: new order persists, conditions following reconfiguration, permits new emergences. Complexity, therefore, integrated emergences accumulation, sedimented history each new reconfiguration inherits and can amplify.

Consequences of this temporal reconfiguration for book architecture profound. Prior Part established form as dynamic persistence, relation pattern maintaining through perturbations. Section 3 section reveals persistence temporal, outside time not, atemporal not. Continuous reconfiguration operation where each synthesis carries prior integrated. Form exists not "before" time later undergoing alterations. Form temporality, mode matter reconfigures maintaining recognisable pattern.

Forward movement touches crucial question: if reconfiguration irreversible and productive, leaving integrated conformity conditioning future, how systems evolve simple to complex? Not by cause, determinism refused. Not by law, no law guarantees complexity. Accumulation: each reconfiguration integrates what was. When reconfiguration productive (generates emergent properties), those properties remain integrated. Next reconfiguration works upon enriched structure, can generate even more sophisticated emergences. Complexity sedimented history, integrated contingencies accumulation creating base for new contingencies.

Final aphorism: Time does not flow, it reconfigures. And each reconfiguration carries the history that rendered it possible.

Consider protein crystallisation. Each protein molecule aggregating to growing crystal reconfiguration, crystal changes form, size, structural properties. No molecule «knows» what part of. Each aggregation follows local thermodynamics, electrostatic bonds between chains, protein folds minimising free energy, confinement in crystal matrix. No plan. Each step contingent: molecule might aggregate not (remain in solution), aggregate another position (topological constraints permit multiple locations). Yet steps accumulate. Resulting structure vastly complex: exact atom disposition in crystal lattice, optical properties, mechanical properties, all emerging from simple reconfigurations lacking global plan.

Complexity destined not. «Promised» in initial conditions not. Emerged from successive reconfigurations, each leaving structure conditioning next, lacking rupture, teleology, under material constraints and contingency. Signifies no chaos, possible futures determined by constraints (system cannot assume any configuration), which future actualises contingent (system can assume multiple different conformities, each compatible with constraints, none necessary).

Question motivating following chapter emerges thus: if reconfiguration contingent and can be productive, is complexity matter destiny or contingent accident? Inscribed in initial conditions or emerged lacking guarantee? Present chapter provided affirmative answer: yes, complexity can emerge from simple reconfigurations by temporal accumulation. Question inverts following chapter: to what extent complexity genuinely contingent? Limits existing? Attractors whose form matter tends to assume existing? Complexity laws constraining emergence existing?

Part I founded form as event, coemerging body-field in order regime persisting dynamically. Part II temporalises this form. Present chapter showed how time operates within already existing forms, how reconfiguration integrates, how emergence occurs. Following chapter will show how time (reconfiguration) can produce new forms, how complexity emerges, how material organisation gains new integration degrees. No separation: form emerges temporally (in processes possessing rhythm, duration, transforming integration), and time forms materially (in matter organising, reconfiguring, structuring). One precedes not other. Process faces: matter organising rhythmically, reconfiguration producing order.

Time does not flow, it reconfigures. And each reconfiguration carries the history that rendered it possible.
