1. Two Images of the Philosopher and the Unnamable
1.1. Two Images of the Philosopher
There are two images of the practising philosopher that are neither hierarchical nor exclusive, but which designate radically distinct practices, both necessary, both rigorous, both operationally legitimate in their own register. The distinction is structural, not axiological. It is not a matter of one being superior to the other. It is a matter of them functioning on different registers, according to different logics, responding to different demands that every activity of thought eventually encounters.
The technical philosopher works within a consolidated territory: stabilised concepts, well-defined operators, problem fields already mapped, limits already recognised and accepted by the intellectual community. His task is precise and delimitable. He refines the available distinctions, articulates the internal tensions that emerge between rival positions, extends the logical consequences of an initial position, makes visible the hidden implications in a conceptual framework. The methodology is equally clear and open to validation. The technical philosopher validates through internal coherence: the new position cannot contradict the premises that produced it. He validates through correspondence with empirical data: if the distinction has refined understanding of the observable, it has fulfilled its function. He validates through formal elegance: the distinction that achieves simplicity where there was complexity gains credibility. There is nothing lesser in this operation. It is necessary and absolutely fundamental.
Medieval scholasticism offers an extraordinary example. Scholastic philosophers refined distinctions in Aristotle with a precision that still impresses today. Essence versus existence: the Thomist school argues that in God essence and existence are identical (God is pure being), whereas in creatures essence and existence are distinct (the thing may cease to exist). Act versus potency: continued refinement of what it means to be 'in potency' for an ontological possibility. Substance versus accident: what persists when properties change? Each refinement was a precise operation that subtly altered the available field, adding descriptive power where there was confusion, eliminating gross misconceptions that blocked subsequent thought, making visible the logical complexity where there was deceptive appearance of simplicity. This activity was not sterile: it structured medieval theology, natural philosophy, ethics.
Modern Anglo-Saxon analytic offers a second example. Frege and Russell, at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century, refined logic and philosophy of language. The distinction between sense and reference (Frege): 'the morning sign' and 'the night sign' have the same reference (the planet Venus) but different sense (different modes of presentation). This simple distinction radically alters understanding of how language works, how meaning occurs, how we can think about identity. The analysis of defined descriptions (Russell): 'the present king of France' has no reference but has a well-defined propositional meaning, because it unfolds in logical analysis. Clarification of the existential quantifier: 'there is' is not a property of objects, but a logical operator of quantification. Each distinction is an extraordinary precision work that transforms understanding of language, thought, reality.
Structuralism refined linguistics received from Saussure. Langue versus parole: the language as a system of possibilities versus speech as particular realisation. Signifier versus signified: the sign is not an label that names a thing, it is the result of a differential relationship between a sound element and a concept element. The arbitrariness of the sign: there is no natural connection between 'cat' and the feline animal, only historical convention. The negativity of the system: in language there are no positivities: only differences, only absences that define presences. These refinements were not abstract. They structured contemporary linguistics, anthropology, psychoanalysis, philosophy.
Contemporary neurobiology refines mechanisms of synaptic plasticity. How do synaptic weights change under repeated experience? (Long-term potentiation and long-term depression.) How does neural receptivity reconfigure when sensory demand is continuous? (Receptive field reorganisation.) How does the connectionist structure in a developing brain stabilise under environmental pressure? Every detail of these mechanisms, every refinement of understanding how synapses modify themselves, structures behavioural medicine, education, neurological rehabilitation.
The technical philosopher is a builder in the full sense. He consolidates territorially what is already known, makes explicit the hidden implications that a conceptual framework carries, builds operational truth silos where there was only unordered questions before. Without this activity, thought has no hardness, no memory of itself that allows a thinker to dialogue with a thinker from centuries earlier, no precision that permits recognition between distant investigators. It is on this solid base that precision gains real meaning. It is in this consolidated land that one can certainly distinguish what follows logically from premises and what is negated, between what is right given the available operators and what is fundamentally wrong.
However there is a second image, less comfortable and rarer, but equally rigorous. It is of the philosopher who works on the edge of what the available concepts can cover. Not due to lack of rigour: the edge is not territory for weak thinkers or intuitive operators. It is because this philosopher identifies a precise point where the philosophical field stops integrating something that the field itself contains, something that is operationally present but whose available operators cannot simultaneously accommodate. At this specific place, the concepts begin to fail. They do not fail due to remediable imprecision through technical refinement: they fail because what stands before does not structurally fit into the categories that exist. These are failures of scope rather than execution.
The characteristic structure: operator A can handle dimension X of a problem, operator B can handle dimension Y of the same problem, but when A and B approach each other, insurmountable contradictions emerge. There is no immediate synthesis. There is no Hegelian sublation that preserves what was true in each. There is only a precise impasse: an antinomy where both positions seem indispensable yet mutually exclusive. Here, thought does not refine the existing operators. It moves toward the zone of inadequacy. It remains suspended between operators, mapping the terrain where none can step with guaranteed safety, where the conceptual ground ceases to be firm.
Difference in practices, not in rigour: It is important here to insist that the difference between the technical and the edge is not a difference in demands of rigour. Both require maximum rigour. Only in different records. The technical works within an established system: it can verify internal coherence, can demonstrate consequences, can refute positions by contradiction. There are clear criteria of truth and falsity because there is a stable operator framework that allows this. The edge works where the criteria of truth begin to fail. There is still no system that allows conclusive demonstration. There is only pressure against operators, successive approximations, mapping of zones of indeterminacy. Rigour is equally severe, only it is not demonstrative: it is approximate, cartographic, analogical. The edge philosopher does not renounce precision. It relinquishes the security of complete proof.
The history of philosophy, viewed with maximum attention, is largely the history of these approximations to the edge. The moments when the configuration of the philosophical field changed decisively: the moments that mark true transformations, that leave a permanent mark: were not moments of incremental technical refinement. They were moments in which someone worked on the edge, pressed persistently against the boundaries of what could be said, forced language and operators to a new place where the field began to reconfigure itself internally, and produced a new name that finally integrated what had previously been mere impossibility. Plato thinking beyond the Forms: how can multiple things participate in a single Form when the Form is non-multiple? The problem of the third man emerges as an unnamed phenomenon. Descartes thinking the res cogitans at a moment of radical self-overcoming: how can pure thought, without extension, think extension? How can two completely different substances interact in the pineal gland? Res cogitans remains an unnameable tension in Cartesian philosophy. Kant reformulating the entire critical framework: how can the a priori synthesis be possible when no sensation immediately provides it and no reason derives it from concepts alone? Even Kant recognises that the question is insoluble within the previous framework: it requires a whole Critique for approximation. Darwin confronting the irreducibility of life to any intelligent design or simple mechanism: how do species systematically vary, how are advantageous variations preserved without guiding purpose? This is an unnamed thing he works on for decades. Freud confronted with symptoms that rational consciousness and volitional will cannot explain: why hysteria without identifiable organic base? Why self-harmful behaviour without visible causal benefit? The unconscious is necessary to name what was previously incomprehensible.
These philosophers were not edge-walkers because they disobeyed logic. They were edge-walkers because they obeyed the logic of a field that had only just begun to emerge, a field whose operators were still being forged under pressure from reality that those very operators could not contain. When Plato recognised the problem of the third man: if the Form is what explains the participation of things, what explains the Form?: he was not failing. He was working with maximum preciousness in that zone where his system began to reveal its insufficiency. When Descartes set the cogito as an irreducible base and then tried to think how this dimension res cogitans could interact with res extensa: it was not confusion. It was work on the edge, pressure against the operators his own philosophy had produced.
This raises a central question: what does it mean to work at the edge? It does not mean renouncing rigour. It means recognising that there are zones of the field where thought is forced to advance with concepts that simultaneously know they are structurally inadequate. The philosopher in an edge position cannot leave language: no thought can. There is no escape from the symbolic regime. But he knows that language is a material instrument conceived to integrate what has already been captured, which has already passed repeated experience, which has already proved its consistency. When facing what has not yet been captured: what lies at the edge of capture, about to be named but still nameless: language begins to sound like productive inadequacy. Each sentence is an approximation, a attempt, a pressure against the edge. None is the thing itself. Each leaves residue, and that residue is a precise indicator of that for which there is still no word.
The technical philosopher consolidates what is already known. The edge philosopher questions what the consolidated operators begin to reveal as their limit. Both are necessary. Without the technical: there would be conceptual chaos, impossibility of building stable structures, communication between thinkers would be impossible. Without the edge: there would be conceptual death, ossification of thought, fundamental inability to respond to new that emerges in reality. The most fruitful periods of intellectual history are not those dominated by one or another: they are those where both practices coexist in productive tension, where technical refinement coexists with opening the edge, where consolidation and questioning work simultaneously.
1.2. Essential Unnamable Versus Provisional Unnamable
Not all semi-named entities are of the same kind. This is a fundamental operative distinction. They appear similar at first sight, seem to demand comparable conceptual effort, yet have radically different ontological consequences. The confusion between these two categories produces intellectual paralysis or mystical resignation that blocks genuine border work.
Innominate essential is what whose nature consists in transcending any possible naming. Not provisionally: by permanent ontological essence. It includes the entire genealogy of philosophical and theological transcendences that structure Western thought.
The Absolute One of Plotinus’s Neoplatonism: that which lies beyond all possible predication, that is the generator of all being by continuous emanation, that remains unknowable not because of a deficiency in human knowledge but because of the ontological structure of the One itself. If the One could be named, it would cease to be One. If it could be incorporated into a category, it would become determined, and thus immediately cease to be absolute. This is not a technical problem: it is an ontological impossibility.
The apophatic Nothing of the Christian negative tradition and mysticism: the divine can only be named by an infinite series of negations. It is no being, no essence, no substance, no quality. The negation of negation: it is not non-being. And one continues to negate: there is no possible positive predication because any predication would reduce the divine to the determined. The structure is one of permanent impossibility: there is always another negation, always another no, always a retreat from naming.
Levi-Sivian alterity: the face of the other human as infinity that interrupts every attempt at totalisation, that demands an ethical response before any ontological question, that remains unassimilable not because we do not know how to technically name it but because it sounds inherent to its ethical nature to remain a challenge without final answer, a demand that is never satisfied, an unlimited thing that cannot be domesticated. The ethical relation with the other is a relation with the infinite: there is no synthesis, no integration into one, only a continuous response that never ends.
Kantian sublimity: that aesthetic experience where imagination reaches its limit in front of numerical infinity (the innumerable stars) or the unrepresentable power (the storm, the abyss), where the faculties of knowledge clash in a way that is simultaneously disturbing and pleasant, where the subject feels small yet also elevated. For Kant, this marks a structural limit: there is always something that exceeds the capacity for representation, always an excess that resists form.
Contemporary alterity Platonism in post-Heideggerian philosophy: there is always a thing-in-itself that escapes, by constitutive principle, every appearance, every integration into knowledge, every capture. This notion permeates Derrida (différance as that which is indefinitely postponed, never present), Foucault (archive as that which governs the sayable but is not wholly sayable), and post-structuralism in general.
Characteristic structure of every unnameable essential: there is something that by ontological principle, metaphysical essence, ethical transcendence cannot be incorporated into any regime of inscription. Nothing that occurs: no change in the operators available, no future evolution of knowledge, no empirical discovery: would make it possible to name what is in question. It is not a matter of insufficient instrument at this moment: it is a matter of constitutive impossibility that continues and will continue eternally. The unnameable essential is not a contingent phenomenon. It is an eternal truth. It has always been nameless, it will always be. Resignation before the essential is honoured as virtue: recognition that there is a limit that cannot be crossed, that there is a transcendence to be revered.
Now, this is the point at which a precise philosophical choice must be made.
Provisional unnameable is radically different in each dimension. It is what the material field contains currently, that is actively operating at this moment, that is genuinely real, but for which the regime of legibility available now has not yet found a way to transcribe it, no naming has yet been produced. It is not what transcends by principle: it is what temporarily exceeds, that remains out of reach not of cognition in general (as in Kant) but of the specific operators operating at this precise historical moment. It is provisional because when inscription occurs: when a name emerges, when reconfiguration achieves a new nomenclature: what happens is not revelation of something that was internally hidden and finally becomes luminous. What happens is genuine reconfiguration of the conceptual and material field. New operators are produced not ex nihilo but through continuous pressure against the old ones. The topography of the thinkable changes: what was previously unthinkable becomes thinkable, what was vague becomes precise. And this production of new operators, in the same emergent movement of the name, in turn generates a new unnameable on the margins of the previous naming. The process does not end: it transforms.
The provisional unnameable does not disappear when we manage to name it. This is a crucial difference from the essential. The provisional multiplies when named. It becomes a different unnameable. It changes form, specifies itself, but remains as a permanent structure of conceptual operation. This is not a failure of reason, nor a defect of knowledge: it is a correct, honest, fertile structure of reason in relation to a reality that is not a passive totality, which is not a fixed substance waiting to be known, which is innately surplus.
Historical examples make this absolutely palpable. Evolution of species was provisionally unnamed until Darwin worked the problem for decades. The eighteenth century had a natural-historical description of fixed forms (the Linnaean system), a vague idea of ‘scala naturae’: a scale of nature’s complexity ranging from mineral to God: but no rigorous conceptual operator to think about systematic change in species without invoking either radical chance (where there would be no regularity at all) or divine design (where there would be transcendent intention). The intervention of both these categories left the question outside scientific intelligibility.
Darwin worked on the edge of this lack of name for decades: not briefly, not through sudden illumination, but through long, empirically rooted, intellectually difficult work. The Beagle voyage (1831-1836): systematic and continuous observation of variation in populations of similar species on different islands, of the geographical relationships that species maintain, of modifications that appear when populations are geographically isolated. Correspondence with Wallace late in life: competitive pressure that another mind had arrived at the same intuition: that there was an operative mechanism producing selection of favourable variations. Private notebooks and drafts: repeated pressure against the inadequacy of old operators: ‘intelligent design’ cannot explain vestigiality (organs that no longer function), ‘radical chance’ cannot explain precise adaptation (where there would be regularity and direction), ‘immutable essence’ cannot explain observable variation and production of new species.
Natural selection emerges not from a magical intuitive revelation but from precise work on the edge, from repeated pressure against failing operators. When the name was finally formulated and published (1859), re-configuration of the entire biological field occurred. What had previously been inconceivable, simply unthinkable with available operators: that the extraordinarily complex order of life had a material origin, through a blind mechanism of differential death, without intelligent purpose, without teleology, without transcendent plan: became operative, became the central scientific question structuring all modern biology. Immediate and precise gain: a new unnamed emerges at the margins where there was only impossibility before. Random genetics: how is variation precisely produced? Inheritance of acquired characters: how is acquired biologically acquired? Precise mechanism of hereditary variation: what is transmitted from generation to generation? Mendel (around 1900) offers an answer: discrete genetics, not blending inheritance (continuous). Now a new unnamed emerges: how do epigenetic mechanisms operate? How does horizontal gene transfer in bacteria alter the theory? How does developmental genetic theory articulate with Darwinian natural selection? How are they inter-related? The answers continually reconfigure: behavioural epigenetics, developmental plasticity, gene regulatory networks: but the unnamed remains structurally, transformed yet operative, directing research to new zones of ignorance.
Freud’s unconscious offers a second extraordinarily analogous case. The nineteenth century had a well-structured psychology of consciousness, had rational will as the central operator of psychological explanation, had diagnostic categories such as ‘nervousness’ and ‘hysteria’ to contain the incomprehensible. But there was an entire class of symptoms that did not fit: that resisted all available operators entirely. Self-harmful behaviours with no visible causal explanation, hysterical crises that appeared and disappeared without identifiable organic basis, phobias that were absolutely irreducible to conscious trauma or rational experience. How could a woman be in a hysterical crisis: tremours, paralysis, aphonia: if neurologists found no pathology? How could human behaviour be governed by mechanisms the person herself did not know?
Freud worked on the edge of this intolerable clinical insufficiency for years. He studied cases carefully: Anna O (progressive paralysis without neurological injury, speaking only in English during periods), Dora (loss of voice, persistent cough, no identifiable laryngobronchial or pulmonary pathology), The Rat-Man (intrusive obsessions he himself recognised as irrational, intellectual suffering with no logical foundation that could justify it). Systematic pressure against available operators increases: consciousness alone does not explain this because the person is conscious of paralysis but cannot move; rational will does not govern this because a rational person ardently desires to do what they see prevented; reason has no access to this because any rational argument fails to produce change.
When the name ‘unconscious’ emerges as a new operator: not as a mysterious absolute, not as ‘non-rational’ (for it has its own logic), but as an operative chamber of the psychic with its own structure and functioning: a profound reconfiguration occurs in the entire psychological field. What was once incomprehensible, an untreatable maze, becomes rationalisable, intelligible, under a category that the old operators simply could not accommodate. The unconscious is not a revelation of hidden truth: it is a re-configuration of the problem that allows what was ‘unexplainable madness’ to become a precise psychological issue. Immediate gain: a new unnameable emerges on the margins of the previous naming. In precisely what form does the unconscious develop? How do repression mechanisms operate? How do repressed contents articulate in the body, producing symptoms? Why are certain experiences repressed and not others? Why does the unconscious take exactly the form it takes? The answers multiply: Freudian psychoanalysis offers one answer, contemporary neurobiology another, developmental psychology a third, behavioural epigenetics a fourth: but none is final and none fully closes the question. The unnameable persists, transformed yet structurally operative. Naming was successful: it contained what had previously been incomprehensible: but naming produced a new unnameable immediately.
Dark matter in contemporary cosmology offers a still developing case, not yet conclusive. The twentieth century’s careful astronomical observation revealed a profound discrepancy: galaxies spun at speeds that were inconceivable within the visible mass distribution framework astronomers could measure. If visible mass: that which radiated light: was all there was, galaxies would disintegrate. The unnameable was this discrepancy, this impossibility of cosmological functioning. Edge work: Vera Rubin and Kent Ford map galactic rotation curves with extraordinary precision. Each observation adds pressure on operators: Newtonian dynamics insufficient? General relativity wrong? Is there invisible mass? When ‘dark matter’ is named: not as a solution (that would be an illusion of resolution), but as a formal recognition that the material field contains something: something with gravitational mass: that electromagnetic inscription did not capture, that did not radiate light: re-configuration occurs. The problem transforms. The question is no longer ‘how do we explain the anomaly?’ but ‘what is dark matter? What is it made of? How does it operate? What is its precise distribution? How does it interact with ordinary matter?’ A new unnameable emerges on the margins of the previous naming. And this is not failure. It is life of reason in operation.
The divergence between essential and provisional is operationally crucial because it demands radically different answers, because it implies different relations with time, with the possibility of change, with the nature of intellectual work. An essential unnameable demands philosophical resignation (accepting that there is something structurally intransitive, that there is a limit that cannot be transcended by principle, that there is transcendence that is revered and recognised as inaccessible). Or it demands transcendental faith (accepting external authority: divine, sacred, ethical: that underpins and legitimises the unnamable). Both responses are stopping responses: philosophy stops, recognises its limits, becomes silent before the ineffable. A provisional unnameable, in contrast, demands continuous work, permanent pressure, a movement of approach without stop: pressing against operators that begin to fail, progressively approaching what has no name, re-configuring the conceptual field when old operators reveal insufficiency, producing new naming where there was only emptiness and impossibility of formation. The first type of unnameable is a disguised conceptual death ennobled as philosophical depth, as a respectful recognition of mystery. The second is life of thought in its most fruitful, honest, material operation.
Rejecting the first form: rejecting the essentialism of the unnameable, rejecting the idea that there is a unnamable by ontological principle: is not naïve optimism nor blind technological confidence. It is material honesty with history and structure. It is sober, precise reading of what the history of philosophy and science empirically demonstrates: no essential unnameable has ever been successfully named in lasting fashion (the Plotinian One remains intransitive; apophatic Nothing remains unknowable; Levinasian alterity remains responsible; Kantian sublime continues to mark the limit of representation). But many provisional unnameables have been progressively approached through intensive work, were named, became new operators that opened fruitful and continued fields of investigation. And when they were named, they did not close the question: they simply transformed it into a more precise new unnameable.
This is a fundamental philosophical choice: to believe that the unnamable is always essential, and therefore accept resignation and silence; or to believe that the unnamable is provisional, and therefore continue rigorous work. The present text and the chapter it supports take an explicit position: the unnamable is provisional.
1.3. Critical Convergences and Divergences with Kant
Kant deserves precise and honest attention because he offers a deceptive proximity: they seem close, but divergence is structural and irreparable. Kant is right about one crucial point. He is wrong about where to locate that point on the ontological map.
Kantian Convergence: the Recognition of the Limit: There is a dimension of reality that does not fall within the categories available for human knowledge. Thought finds its limit. Kant demonstrates this with extraordinary rigour in the third Critique. Imagination reaches a point where it cannot proceed, where the faculties of knowledge come into conflict with one another, where the power of representation reveals its insufficiency not by remediable technical imprecision but by a transcendental structure inscribed within the very constitution of a finite rational being. For Kant this is the sublime: that paradoxical aesthetic experience in which the cognitive faculty finds itself surpassed by the presented object (the numerical infinity of stars, the extreme magnitude of a mountain, the unrepresentable force of a storm). In that moment of surpassing there is simultaneously discomfort (because imagination feels its defeat) and pleasure (because reason celebrates its own power upon recognising its limit). Kantian gain: absolute rigour against the illusion of Enlightenment totalisation. Radical honesty in recognising the limit. Clear rejection of the illusion that philosophy can ultimately domesticate reality, capture it completely in an exhaustive category, reduce the absolute to the determined. This honesty is philosophically non-negligible: and remains valid.
Structural Divergence and Irremediability: Where to Locate the Limit: Yet Kant places the limit in the wrong place. He locates it in the structure of the transcendental subject, not in the thing itself. The inadequacy that Kant identifies is a fact of consciousness: it is a fact of the life of a thinking self that has a specific cognitive structure: a priori forms of space and time, categories of understanding that are finite in number (twelve categories). The thing itself, what lies beyond the power of imagination, remains outside this story of cognitive inadequacy. What I cannot represent is simply unrepresentable to me: not because the thing is unknowable in itself, but because the structure of my mind has a determined form that perpetually limits it. This reduces the whole problem to the question of representation and its limits. The unnameable becomes a property of the relation between subject (with fixed transcendental structure) and object (which remains eternally outside, thing-in-itself intangible).
In the present argument: the argument that structures this chapter: this localisation of the limit is rejected. What has no name is not merely a state of inadequacy between a cognitive subject and an unrepresentable object that keeps a transcendental distance. What has no name is a state of the material field itself. The excess lies in the thing itself, in the way that material reality contains more than any inscription can at once integrate into a coherent and operational framework. It is not a question of representing a thing-in-itself eternally distant and intangible. It is a question of material difference and its operators of legibility in continuous confrontation, where each operator leaves a residue, where each naming opens a new unnameable.
Thought Experiment to Clarify the Divergence: Imagine an entity with a cognitive structure radically different from the human. Not humanoid: radically strange. A mind that operates with non-space, non-time categories (because its embodiment would not be spatial-temporal). A logic of many values, not bivalent. A quantum substrate, not classical. A structure completely distinct from Kantian transcendence. This mind would also confront the unnameable? Certainly yes. But not because the thing is by principle unknowable to any possible cognition (which would be Kantian essentialist position). It would be because the thing is permanently excessive: it contains material difference that any operator of legibility, regardless of its structure, would necessarily leave out. The limit does not lie in the fixed structure of a human transcendental mind. It lies in the permanent reconfiguration of reality, which continues to operate, which continues to exceed, beyond what any inscription regime can capture at once, simultaneously.
What to Retain and What to Reject from Kant: Retain from Kant: the rigorous insistence on the limit, the clear rejection of totalising illusion, the intellectual honesty about the radical inadequacy that all cognition faces. This is a gain that should not be lost. Reject from Kant: the localisation of the limit in subjective cognition as property of a transcendental subject, the idea that there is an eternally intangible thing-in-itself by structure, the reduction of the whole problem to representation. Differentiated recovery: the limit lies in the permanent reconfiguration of reality, not in the fixed and transcendental structure of the thinking subject. Reality is not an eternally hidden thing-in-itself. It is immanent, it is material, but it continues to exceed its operators of legibility: not because it is transcendent, but because it is constitutively heterogeneous relative to what any singular regime can integrate at once.
1.4. Against Levinas: Material Infinitude Versus Ethics
Levinas offers an even more deceptive proximity than Kant: he seems close to him, but the divergence is equally deep and irremediably structural. There are real convergences, legitimate gains, but also a precise necessary rejection.
Levinean convergence: recognition of infinity: There is an absolute insistence by Levinas that something remains outside, unassimilable, that no category can fully contain, integrate, domesticate. This is the point of maximum convergence. For Levinas, this infinity is quasi-transcendent: better to say it is what ruptures transcendence: the infinite alterity of the face of another human being. The other does not enter my system of knowledge because its presence, its nakedness, its vulnerability interrupts every attempt at totalisation, of Hegelian synthesis. Its ethical appeal precedes any ontological question, any query about what it is. There is a demand for responsibility before any question about being. This non-entry of the other into my system is, for Levinas, the condition of possibility of genuine ethics: not an ethics as a set of principles that I would apply, but a responsibility that constitutes me, which is prior to my recognition of it, which I do not choose but that chooses me through the face of the other. A Levinasian gain: ethics not as transcendent security or immutable rational foundation, but as a continuous response to a demand that never ends, that is never fully satisfied, that accompanies me until death. Responsibility without rest, without possibility of conclusion, without point of arrival.
Crucial divergence: location and nature of infinity: Yet Levinas places the infinity in a specific place: in human alterity, in the face of the other. The structure is quite precise: there is an other who demands me before I understand him, who interrogates me with a demand that exceeds all my finite capacity to respond, and in this excess: in this impossibility of integration: true ethics arises. The non-entry of the other into my system of power and knowledge is precisely what makes me responsible. Infinity is marked as sacred, as worthy of reverence, as a moment where the transcendent touches the human through the face of the other, while demanding not-declared but absolutely clear.
In the present argument: this location is refused, or rather expanded beyond this specific location. What does not enter the system of legibility is not only the face of another human (though, obviously, the face of the other is a powerful example among many). It is the very dynamics of the material real that continues to operate, that remains in structural excess, that never ceases to challenge the operators available. Infinity is not a property of the human other: it is a property of the real. The real is infinite not because Levinas has reason about ethics. The real is infinite because it is permanently surplus, because it is constitutively heterogeneous with respect to our inscription operators.
The approach to the unnameable is not a reverend reception of ethical infinity, nor an encounter with the sacred as humanising responsible alterity. It is not the transformation that Levinas values as the moment where I become truly human through response to the other. It is work at the border: it is rigorous pressure against operators that begin to fail, it is reconfiguration of conceptual fields that have revealed insufficiency, it is production of new nomenclature that allows integration of what once escaped.
What to retain and what to reject in Levinas: The Levinasian ethics is deeply respected as an operator, as a genuine description of a dimension of human encounter. The face of the other is, effectively, that which demands response, resists totalisation, interrogates. But this is not the complete definition of the real's infinity. This is an example, powerful and important, but not exclusive. The real exceeds us in many ways that Levinas does not integrate: it exceeds through the face of the other, certainly, but also through the matter surrounding us, through our operators that fail before phenomena we cannot contain, through history that is not made according to our will or our consciousness, through death that cannot be domesticated by the symbolic, through every material structure that remains in operation beyond what we can name.
Responsibility springs from recognition that there is a real that continues to operate, that I cannot fully domesticate, that demands continuous response and without guarantee of adequate answer: not only ethical responsibility towards the human other, but material responsibility towards all the real that remains in excess against my operators, against my schemes, against my frames of intelligibility. This responsibility is broader than Levinas's. It precedes human ethics. It is a responsibility to think, to remain attentive to the zone of surplus where operators enter contradiction.
There is no reverence here: there is maximum rigour. There is no sacred: there is only material in permanent reconfiguration. There is no transcendence: there is immanence that continues to exceed indefinitely its own operators of legibility.
Structural Aphorism
The unnamed is not a permanent (essential) mystery nor an access to transcendence (ethical). It is provisional, contingent, reconfigurable by precise work on the edge. The philosophy that works with material honesty recognises this and proceeds with maximum rigour where operators begin to fail.
Methodological Note on the Present Text
It is important at this moment to make a reflective observation about what the present text does: meta-observation that demonstrates in practice what it theoretically claims. The chapter works precisely against the unnamed that structures the entire Field X: what had no rigorous name in the available operators of thought on the relationship between symbolic inscription and real material, between the consolidated regime of legibility that worked well in certain contexts and the excess that remained operative outside of it, impossible to be contained. The text designated this unnamed as ‘structural operational tension between symbolic inscription and material excess’, as ‘zone of ontological indeterminacy where previous operators fail structurally but new operators can emerge’. Naming what had no name is, simultaneously, three things: producing greater precision in the diagnosis (now we know exactly what is at issue), fundamentally altering the field (the operators no longer work in the same way as before), and preparing the emergence of new operators (what was unthinkable becomes thinkable).
Because now the previously unnamed has rigorous contours, an operative description that works, an analogous structure that repeats across multiple historical contexts (Darwin with evolution, Freud with the unconscious, cosmology with dark matter). It has become a thing about which one can think with maximum precision, with rigour equal to technical thought, only in a different register. And by naming it: by producing a designation that integrates what previously escaped entirely: the text generated a new unnamed awaiting future systematic philosophical work: how does a material regime without an initial inscription manage to generate the conditions of its own subsequent legibility? How does the transition from pre-symbolic to symbolic effectively occur? How does the material reconfiguration allow inscription to emerge when there was no inscription before? How does material immanence manage to generate the possibility of symbolic transcendence? This is now the unnamed that awaits rigorous approximation in the following chapters: and it will remain structural as long as thought works with honesty towards the real material that continues to operate beyond what we know how to name.
2. The Three-Moment Structure of Edge-Thought
2.1. The Three-Moment Structure
Work at the edge of a regime has precise structure. No intuition, no romantic vagueness. The thought that confronts what its operators cannot integrate follows a rigorous, falsifiable, replicable pattern. It is patterned in three moments: recognition, pressure, emergence: that unfolds with logic as firm as a mathematical demonstration, even though the content is of intense uncertainty. It is important to distinguish this from the outset: the structure is rigid, but the path within it is open.
The first moment is the recognition of excess. Here, thought discovers nothing from the outside. There is no revelation, no mysterious access to a hidden dimension. Recognition precedes that: it is a localised perception that there is something that the field contains, something operative, something that is present in thought itself while it works, but which the available operators cannot simultaneously integrate. It is recognition that what has always been present does not fit into the categories in use. This is a crucial detail. The unnamed does not arise from nothing. It is what every inscription operation, when attempting to capture, lets slip: not by accidental failure, but by immanent structure.
This recognition is always localised, specific, identifiable. It is not a vague feeling of general insufficiency. It is a precise gap in an argumentative series, a contradiction between two positions that both seem necessary: just as Descartes when he recognised that the thinking thing, the res cogitans, is an irreducible dimension to the extended thing, the res extensa. Descartes did not have a ‘mystical intuition’ of this disjunction. He had rigorous diagnosis: his own operators for thinking the identity between mind and body led to unsolvable paradoxes within the initial framework. The Cartesian disjunction was a precise recognition that two categories that should coherently articulate themselves refused each other. It is an antinomy when two operators approach, and at this point of approximation the regime fails. Kant recognised this in the ‘Critique of Pure Reason’: the transcendental structure of the subject imposes an unpassable limit to knowledge. It was not epistemological fear. It was diagnosis. Darwin recognised that life variation could not be explained either by intelligent design (the then operator), nor by species fixity (the previous operator). It was recognition of the radical inadequacy of old operators.
The diagnosis is precise: it circumscribes the contours of the unnamed even before naming it. One can map where the gap lies: between this concept and that, in this argumentation and that, in this series of observations and this series of predicates. Thought knows where it fails. It knows that the territory is mapped even though the thing within the territory has no name. This is essential: recognition is not confusion. It is clarity about one's own limit. It is precision in circumscribing what cannot be named.
The second moment is pressure against operators. After recognition, thought does not surrender. It does not retreat to metaphysical silence, nor invoke unindicated transcendence. It presses. It works against the unnamed, forces available operators into new positions, produces successive reconfigurations. This is not refinement. Refinement occurs when one is within a consolidated regime, improving concepts, making them more precise. Pressure is something different. It is reconfiguration, an attempt to fit into a conceptual space that was not designed for it. It produces provisional formulations: concepts known to be insufficient but pointing. It works around the unnamed thing, producing successive approximations. Each approximation learns from where the previous collapsed. It is not linear progression. It is spiral movement, regressions, attempts that almost work, adjustments, new points of rupture.
The pressure operates according to a very specific logic. Thought recognised the gap: it knows precisely where the regime fails. Now it works systematically to expand operators at that point of failure. It is not a blind attempt. It is localised and goal-directed work. For example, Descartes recognised the lacuna between res cogitans and res extensa. He could have simply declared an unknowable mystery and closed it. But he did not. He pressed against the gap. He tried to formulate how these two principles articulate. The pineal gland was the answer: a failure, but it was an answer. It was an attempt to create a point of contact, to force operators closer together. When the pineal gland did not function, he kept pressing: occasio vs efficient cause, pre-established harmony (later Leibnizian solution), other reconfigurations. Each attempt learned exactly where the previous had collapsed.
Descartes exemplifies this with clarity. After stating that res cogitans and res extensa are irreducible to one another, he spent decades trying to reconstruct continuity. The pineal gland was the provisional answer of how a thinking being could also be bodily. The answer is known as inadequate: yet the reason it is inadequate is that Descartes presses against old operators and cannot achieve sufficient reconfiguration. The pressure work produced successive approximations: each partly true, partly false, always leaving residue. Each formulation learned from the point where the previous unravelled. Descartes was not sure of the path: no philosopher working at the edge is: yet he knew that movement was absolutely necessary. That there was no rest within the old operators. That it had to continue.
Kant exemplifies the second moment in a distinct manner. After Critique of Pure Reason, after establishing that synthesis between sensitivity and understanding is possible (his great gain), he began attempting to ground how this synthesis occurs without contradiction. He did not achieve a final formulation. The successive reformulations: schematism, faculty of judgement: continued leaving residue. The question remained: how is the multiple unified? How does sensitive multiplicity enter conceptual unity without the synthesis being merely subjective or merely objective? Each answer was true and false: true because it articulated something that had been disarticulated, false because it continued to elude. The question reconfigures itself but does not resolve.
Freud in psychoanalysis offers a third example. There were psychic phenomena: hysteria with somatic symptoms without physiological cause, self-injurious behaviours without explanation in the available psychological categories (consciousness, will, rationality): that did not fit within existing operators. Freud presses. He introduces unconscious as a new operator. But the introduction does not resolve: it opens a new unnamed. How does repression operate? How is the unconscious dimension articulated into body? How is it transmitted in transfer? Successive reformulations: cathexis, drive, structure: each producing real advancement and a new unnamed simultaneously. There is never a final answer. There is always continuous pressure against operators, forcing them to new positions.
The structure of this pressure is that thought has no guarantee that the path is correct. But it is sure that it cannot stop. This is what distinguishes edge-thinking from total abandonment. There is no comfort in technical justification. There is no rest in closed demonstration. There is only a need to keep pressing, continue reformulating, keep trying. The philosopher working at the edge is suspended between old operators that do not fit and new operators that he has not yet fully formulated. It is a position of maximum intellectual vulnerability. But it is also a position of maximum productivity: when thought can emerge from this suspended space, it transforms entire fields.
The pressure also has a physiological structure, one might say. There is a tolerance limit to working at the edge: the thinker becomes tired, loses confidence, despairs. Therefore pressure is never continuous in a single individual. It is transmitted. A philosopher presses for a decade, reaches the limit, passes the question to another. The other resumes pressure from where the previous had reached. This is visible in the history of philosophy: Kant presses against synthesis, reaches a point, the Romantic generation picks up the pressure, then Hegel, then Nietzsche. Pressure moves hand-to-hand, always against the same point of inadequacy. This is not accidental. It is the necessary structure of edge work. No thinker can maintain indefinite pressure. But the intellectual community can. The pressure transmits. The approach continues.
The third moment is the emergence of the name. Not all approximation work achieves naming. Often it produces precise contours of the unnamed, maps margins, offers an exact cartography of what cannot be named: and this is a genuine gain, real value. Yet when the name emerges: and it is rare: it is not arbitrary. It is not mere verbal invention. It emerges because the previous pressure reconfigured the field sufficiently precisely for a new operator to integrate what until then remained outside. The emergence is a moment of collective reconfiguration. It is not only that the philosopher found the right word. The entire field reorganises itself. Others begin to use the word. Operators function differently. What was unthinkable, impossible, unnamed becomes thinkable, operative, nameable.
The moment of emergence has very particular characteristics. It is not merely the introduction of a new word: there are many new words that never manage to gain real traction. It is when a word finds reality sufficiently prepared to receive it. It is when prior pressure has created an exact conceptual vacuum which the word fills. Example: ‘natural selection’ in Darwin. The expression was not novel. There were antecedents that used similar language. But in Darwin it emerges with force completely different because the biological field had been so pressured that the word becomes necessary, inevitable. It comes to be used not as speculation, but as an operator. It comes to be taught. It is taken to be true simply by evidence that without it one cannot articulate observations that were accumulating.
There is also a particular phenomenon: when a name emerges well, it does not merely label the previously unnamed: it reorganises the entire conceptual panorama. By introducing ‘natural selection’, Darwin not only offers a mechanism for variation. He offers a reconfiguration such that all biology begins to operate differently. The origins of life become a different question. The classification of species becomes a different question. Even elementary concepts such as ‘species’ acquire new contours. This is a sign that emergence has been successful: it is not an isolated word, but a reconfiguration of an entire field.
‘Natural selection’ emerges after Darwin decades of pressure against biological operators. It was not a new word: ‘natural selection’ had precedents: but it emerges as a new operator, as a complete reconfiguration of the way we think about life. Now ‘evolution’ is an operative category, not speculation. Now biology operates differently. The previously unnamed has been named. Immediately, new unnamed emerge on the margins: heredity, mechanisms of variation, the relationship between genotype and phenotype: but the field has reorganised sufficiently that these new unnamed are precise questions, not total confusion.
‘The unconscious’ emerges in Freud as a new operator. The category was not entirely unknown: there were precursors: but it emerges as an operator that reconfigures all psychology. Now there is systematic recording of what does not enter consciousness. Now there is a method (psychoanalysis) to approach that. Now there is legitimacy to think of dimensions that were previously marginalised as ‘irrational’ or ‘hallucination’. A new unnamed immediately emerges: how repression operates, why some somatic content and others do not, what the structure of the unconscious is: but the field has transformed radically.
‘Dark matter’ emerges in cosmology to name the discrepancy between observed motion in galaxies and the distribution of visible mass. It does not explain the discrepancy: there is no ‘solved’ problem. But it reconfigures how the question is posed. What was an anomaly becomes a new operative category. Now cosmology operates differently. Now there is legitimacy to investigate that which is unseen, which leaves no direct electromagnetic mark, which operates only by gravity. The unnamed has been named. Immediately, a new unnamed emerges: what dark matter is, what it is made of, its distribution: but the field reorganised itself completely.
In all these cases, the emergence of a name is not a revelation of something that had always been hidden. It is a reconfiguration of the field so precise and necessary that a new operator can now be inserted. It is collective recognition that the new operator captures something real, something necessary, something operatively fecund. The moment of emergence is a rare and precious moment. But it has structure. It emerges because prior work of pressure achieved sufficient density. It is not grace. It is not chance. It is the result of sustained border rigour.
Understanding that work at the edge has this structure in three moments: recognition of excess, pressure against operators, emergence of name: radically alters how philosophy is thought. It is not a confused, intuitive, magical activity. It is not a refuge for those who cannot be sufficiently scientific. It is structured, rigorous activity, with clear success criteria (although success is rare). It is an activity that can be studied, learned, taught. It is an activity whose history is precisely locatable: Darwin, Freud, and many others who made successful approximations.
One final observation about this structure: it is not exclusive to philosophy. It appears in science, in art, in any genuine thought activity. The mathematician who recognises that his axioms cannot cover a certain type of problem: that presses against the axioms: eventually creates new mathematics. The artist who recognises inadequacy of his means of expression: that presses against them: invents a new form of expression. The political activist who recognises structural failure in existing organisation: that pushes for change: eventually creates a new political structure. The three-moment structure is the permanent structure of any genuine transformation of practice or regime. That is why it deserves special attention: it is not an accident of intellectual history, it is a constitutive property of transformation in general.
2.2. Technical Thought Versus Edge-Thought
There is a fundamental difference between two modes of operation in thought, and it is essential not to confuse them. It is not a value distinction: one is not superior to the other. It is a difference of direction, of objective, of internal structure. Both are necessary. A great creative period in the history of thought: whether scientific, philosophical, artistic: is when both are alive, in tension, feeding each other.
Technical thought operates within consolidated territory. Stabilised concepts, well-defined operators, problem fields already mapped. The work is refinement, articulation of internal tensions, extension of consequences. The aim is clear: solve problems, reach conclusive answers, stabilise concepts, establish systems that withstand criticism. Progression is linear: starting from axioms or premises, propositions are derived, a coherent structure is built, the argument is closed. The gain is reliability, closed structure, clear validation. One can say: this is true because it follows these premises; this is false because it violates these rules; this is irrelevant because it does not belong to this domain.
The axiomatisation of Euclidean geometry is a paradigmatic example of technical thought. From axioms: point, line, plane, equality, etc.: successive propositions are derived. The field becomes known, predictable, complete. There is an answer for every well-formed question. There is a clear criterion of truth: correspondence to the axioms and to the rules of derivation. This is necessary work. This is work that consolidates, that offers a solid foundation for future operations.
Edge thought works fundamentally differently. By identifying the point at which available concepts cannot cover something that the field contains: not because of imprecision, but because of structural failure: edge thought approaches. It does not try to solve: it tries to approach what does not fit into categories. The goal is not closed resolution. It is reconfiguration of the field so that the question itself changes. The movement is not linear. It is pressure against limits, sideways jumps when a direction closes, attempts that fail and teach, continuous reconfiguration.
This is not inferior: it is different. It requires rigour equal or greater than technical thought, but a different type of rigour. It lacks the comfort of technical justification, the repose of closed demonstration. It demands courage to work with structurally inadequate concepts. It requires the production of intentionally provisional formulations, knowing that each will be superseded. It requires movement without map and without guarantee. It requires constant vigilance against residue: vigilance that no formulation has fully captured the unnamable, that there is always remainder pressing outward.
The demand in edge thought is maximal. Precisely because operators are inadequate, vigilance against inadequacy must be increased, not decreased. The thinker on the edge does not have the confident repose of one refining a consolidated concept. He must always be alert to the point at which the current formulation fails, to where the next pressure should direct itself, to what pattern of insufficiency repeats. It requires keen intelligence, extreme sensitivity to detail, absolute refusal to comply with the first answer that seems to work.
Complementarity between the two modes is absolutely necessary. A philosophy that only refines, that only consolidates, ends in scholasticism. There are historical periods, entire schools of medieval philosophy, late analytic philosophy, that exemplify this: extreme technical refinement without any approach to the unnamable. The discourse becomes increasingly precise on questions that become less and less relevant. There is loss of vitality. There is forgetting why one philosophises.
Scholasticism is not an act of bad faith. It is a natural deviation. When a regime of thought has been successful: when it managed to answer important questions, when it consolidated well-tested operators: there is a natural tendency to continue refining within that regime. It is comfortable. It is verifiable. There are clear methods, success criteria, a community that recognises the work. A medieval philosopher may spend an entire life refining Aristotelian distinctions. An analytic logician may spend an entire life refining logical formalism. It is genuine work. But it becomes scholasticism when it disconnects from any question that matters, when refinement becomes an end in itself, when there is no longer any edge pressure guiding it. It is when refining has become a vitiated activity: one continues because it always continued, not because there is an unnamable pressing against operators.
A philosophy that only presses, that abandons any consolidation, ends in ruin. There are intellectual movements: late post-structuralism, a certain type of deconstruction that refused to be rigorously deconstructive: that fall into incoherence. If everything is inadequate, if every operator fails, if there is no way to reach any stable position, then why continue speaking? Why not absolute silence? The thought that completely abandons technical validation, that refuses to submit to any criterion of coherence, ends in sophistry.
This type of deviation is also natural, in its own way. When approach to the edge fails to attain a name, when pressure against operators cannot achieve clear reconfiguration, there is a tendency toward despair. If operators cannot capture, if approach cannot name, if everything fails: why insist on operators? Why not embrace failure as fundamental truth? Why not say that everything is inadequate, that every notion is constructed, that no truth exists? This is modern sophistry. It is renunciation masqueraded as intellectual radicalism. It seems more honest: yes, it admits that everything fails. But in reality it is abandonment of work. It is refusal to distinguish genuine approximation (which produces precise contours) from failed approximation (which produces nothing). It confuses recognition of limits with denial of truth.
What characterises a great creative period is when both modes are alive. There is consolidation of the operators that worked, there is systematisation of what has been achieved. But there is also continuous proximity to what remains innominate. There is rigour within the consolidated regime and courage at the border. There is technical validation of positions and refusal of permanent fixation. Newton is an example of this: technically precise thinking (differential calculus, precise mechanism) and fundamental proximity to the innominate (force, action at a distance, structure of space-time). Einstein exemplifies it similarly: extreme technical refinement of special relativity and continuous pressure against the operators that preceded it. Darwin, Freud, all great thinkers combine both.
The operational distinction is clear: technical thinking validates truth; border thinking transforms what is true. Validation is necessary: an incoherent system offers no solid foundation. But transformation is also necessary: a complete and closed system denies the reality of excess. The most fecund thinking is that which achieves both simultaneously: that consolidates rigorously what has been achieved while continuing to press against what remains innominate.
There is another important observation about complementarity: the two modes also have different temporal relations with past and future. Technical thinking refines an already existing field: it is closely linked to the past it inherited, consolidates it, stabilises it. Border thinking presses against the field: it is oriented towards a future that does not yet exist, towards operators that have not yet been named. This makes them different forms of time. Technical thinking is a form of conservation: conservation with rigour, with demand, with innovation within limits, but still conservation. Border thinking is a form of radical innovation: invention that the future can be capable of. The two need each other mutually: without technical thinking, border thinking would become pure chaos; without border thinking, technical thinking would become a tomb of dead ideas. The history of advancing thought is the history of both in dynamic tension.
2.3. Historical Cases: Structure of the Pattern
The structure in three moments: recognition, pressure, emergence: is not an abstract theoretical construction. It is visible in concrete historical cases, repeatedly. It allows us to see how the border operates when it operates well. Three main cases: Darwin approaching the mechanism of evolution, Freud approaching the unconscious dimension, contemporary cosmology approaching dark matter. Each case shows the pattern structure operating, each with its particularities, but with a common underlying pattern.
Darwin noticed, still young, during the voyage on the Beagle (1831-1836), that species change systematically. A simple observation, but one that did not fit the operators available: neither creationism (which asserted fixity), nor Lamarckism (which proposed transmission of acquired characteristics). Variation was operative. Variation was not random (pigeons selectively bred changed from generation to generation in an oriented way: this was observable, measurable). Variation was not intelligent design (distribution of species on islands suggested another pattern, suggesting a logic of economy, of adjustment to local circumstances, not perfect divine creation). Variation was not teleological (there was no evident end that pulled the process towards a predetermined direction; there was only continuous adaptation to present circumstances). The innominate had been identified: there was a mechanism of change that no available biological operator could name without falling into contradiction.
The recognition was precise: there is something that the biological field contains, something that is operative in each observation of a fly, in each comparison of fossils, in each geographical distribution, that the operators available cannot integrate simultaneously. Darwin identified this in the early years. He wrote, in 1842, an outline of his theory. But recognition was not yet naming. The outline contained a clear idea: that small, continuous variation, accumulating over generations, could produce new species. That competition for resources would force selection of the best-adapted variations. That this would operate without intention, without project, without teleology. The idea was clear. But it was still an idea, concept, hypothesis. It was not an operator that the scientific community could accept and use. It was precisely because the idea violated consolidated operators: because it denied intelligent design, because it denied cosmic purpose, because it materialised life in a way no one was prepared to accept: that Darwin kept it private for decades.
What followed were decades of pressure. Pressure against Lamarckism, which did not fully explain the geographical distribution of species: why are species on isolated islands different from continental ones if the environment was not so different? Pressure against creationism, which did not correspond to observations: why are there vestigial organs, why are there subtle gradations between closely related species, why are there no fixed types with abrupt gaps? Pressure against his own primitive Darwinism, which did not work in all cases: how to explain secondary sexual characters, how to explain animal instinct, how to explain continuous variation without a clear mechanism of heredity? Darwin accumulated evidence: studies on pigeons and their multiple types derived from one wild species, fragments of fossils showing gradations, distribution of butterflies in the Galápagos islands, comparison of homologous anatomical structures between very different species. Each piece of evidence pressured against old operators. Each approach learned from where the previous collapsed. The result was that Darwin eventually arrived at an increasingly precise, increasingly complete formulation of how natural selection: environmental pressure favouring well-adapted variation: could explain observations that no other operator could fully encompass.
The emergence finally occurred with On the Origin of Species (1859). ‘Natural selection’: a name that emerges not as a discovery of something that had always been hidden there, but as a reconfiguration of the biological field. Now biology operates differently. Now ‘evolution’ is a legitimate operator. Now there is a mechanism (natural selection) that integrates variation, heredity, competition, without resorting to intelligent design or teleology. The unnamable was named. Immediately a new unnamable emerges: how is inheritance transmitted? what is the precise mechanism of variation?: but the field has reorganised itself completely.
Freud confronts the unnamable in a similar way, but on different territory. There are psychic behaviours: hysteria with somatic symptoms without an identifiable organic cause, dreams that appear to lack rational meaning, repetitive self-harmful behaviours: that do not fit within the available psychological operators. Consciousness does not explain. Rational will does not explain. A simple reflex does not explain. Something operative is there that operators cannot integrate.
Recognition came through clinical cases. Anna O., Little Hans, etc.: cases where symptoms resisted physiological explanations. Freud identified precisely: there is a gap. The available operators cannot contain the phenomenon. Recognition was precise: it was not general ignorance, but a structural failure in the way the psychic was thought.
Pressure followed: successive reformulations, new cases that taught, adjustments, revisions. Each formulation was true and false simultaneously: true because it articulated something real, false because it continued to elude. Freud had no certainty that a path was correct: he was suspended between old operators that clearly failed and new operators he could not yet fully formulate. But he knew movement was necessary.
The emergence of the ‘unconscious’ as a new operator: not as mysterious, but as an operative chamber with its own laws: reconfigured the entire psychology. Now there is systematic recording of what does not enter consciousness. Now there is a method (psychoanalysis) to approach it. Now there is legitimacy in thinking about that which was previously marginalised. The unnamable was named. Immediately a new unnamable emerges: how does repression operate, why do some repressions produce somatic symptoms, what is the structure of the unconscious: but the field has transformed radically.
Dark matter offers a third example, more contemporary. In the last decades of the twentieth century, cosmology and astrophysics discovered a discrepancy: the motion of galaxies cannot be explained by visible mass. There is motion that claims invisible matter. Something operative: gravity: does not correspond to the matter seen. Recognition was precise: there is an exact, measurable, unambiguous gap. Rubin’s and Ford’s observations in galactic rotation curves made it undeniable: there is missing mass. There is an unnamable here.
Pressure follows: successive investigations, alternative hypotheses (MOND, modifications of relativity), discoveries of the distribution of dark matter (Bullet Cluster, large-scale structure of the universe). Each investigation learns from the previous point. Operators refine themselves: there is now a better image of how dark matter distributes itself, what its relation to visible matter is, and what role it plays in the formation of cosmic structure.
The emergence of ‘dark matter’ as a new operator: not as a problem solution, but as a reconfiguration of the question: transforms cosmology. Now there is legitimacy to investigate that which is unseen. Now there is an operative category that groups observations that were previously dispersed. Now cosmology operates differently. The unnamed has been partially named: it is known what is being sought, even if its exact nature is unknown. Immediately a new unnamed emerges: what is the nature of dark matter, what is its relationship to dark energy, what is the precise structure of its distribution: but the field has changed.
These three cases: Darwin, Freud, dark matter: exhibit a common pattern. There is a phenomenon that available operators cannot integrate. There is an exact recognition of a gap. There is sustained pressure on operators, with successive approximations. Finally there emerges a name that recomposes the field. The pattern is a permanent structure of thought at the edge.
It is important, however, to add: in each case, the emergence of the name does not terminate the process. The emergence merely changes the terrain where new edge work can begin. Darwin named ‘natural selection’: immediately questions arose that natural selection could not answer: how exactly does inheritance work, what is the mechanism of variation, why do certain traits persist and others disappear. Freud named ‘the unconscious’: immediately questions arose about its structure, its relationship to the body, its modes of operation that neither Freud nor his successors were able to finally answer. Cosmology named ‘dark matter’: immediately questions arose about its nature, its distribution, its relationship with dark energy and the structure of the universe. The unnamed that had been named produced a new unnamed. This is not failure: it is recognition that tension between inscription and excess remains constitutive. The field never fully closes. Approximation continues indefinitely.
2.4. Two Forms of Result
Not every successful approximation achieves the emergence of a single decisive name. In fact, the emergence of a name is rare. Often edge work produces a result that is not naming, yet it is still genuinely productive: precise contours of the unnamed, exact mapping of margins, radical differentiation of operators. It is important to recognise this because it dignifies work that has not achieved a final name but has reached genuine approximation.
The first form of result is that in which the approximation achieves a decisive name. Material excess is inscribed by a new operator. It becomes legible. The field becomes more differentiated. But: and this is crucial: immediately new excess emerges at the margins. The unnameable has been named; there is now a new unnameable awaiting. This is the pattern of cases that change fields: Darwin (evolution emerges; immediately a new unnameable over genetic mechanisms, over genotype-phenotype relation), Freud (the unconscious emerges; a new unnameable about the structure of the unconscious, about articulation in body), cosmology (dark matter emerges; a new unnameable about composition, about relationship with dark energy). The gain is real, it is genuine naming, but the process does not end. The permanent structure of the approximation is that naming generates a new unnameable.
This should arouse caution against a narrative of linear progress. There is no convergence to rest. There is an approximation that can name: real gain: but which immediately, upon naming, reveals a new level of the unnameable. It is as if we had been seeing black, then managed to see shades of grey, then could see colour: but each new level of colour reveals, by contrast, colours we still cannot discern. Progress is real, advancement is genuine, approximation is true: but they do not converge to a final word.
The second form of result is more common, yet often devalued: the approximation does not achieve decisive naming. Nonetheless it produces precise contours of the unnameable. Operators become more differentiated. The margins of the unnameable gain exact cartographic definition. The field changes internally not because a question has been answered, but because the margins of the question have been mapped with crystal-clear clarity. It is genuine success, even without an answer.
Quantum phenomena exemplify this perfectly. For more than a century and a half, no one has produced a single name that satisfied all: that simultaneously captured the objectivity of measurement and the subjectivity of observation, that reconciled classical determinism with quantum indeterminacy, that unified energy quantisation with spatial continuity. There is no word that resolves the question. There are several interpretations: Copenhagen with its renunciation of realism, Bohm with its hidden determinism, Everett with its many worlds, GRW with its spontaneous collapse: each capturing a real aspect and leaving another to escape. None is a final name. Contemporary physicists continue debating which interpretation is correct. There is no consensus. There is no naming that ends the question.
Nevertheless, quantum operators have mapped the unnameable with extreme precision. Complementarity (that a quantum entity can exhibit mutually exclusive properties depending on the measurement context) is described exactly: not solved, but formalised so that its behaviour is predictable. Superposition (that a quantum system may be in multiple states simultaneously) is formalised: the probability of each possible outcome is calculable, even if no interpretation fully explains why this occurs. Non-locality (that measuring one part of an entangled system instantly affects the other part) is empirically demonstrated: Bell tests eliminated classical explanations, though the exact mechanism remains obscure. Entanglement is quantified: one can measure the degree of entanglement, manipulate it, use it for quantum computing. The field has transformed profoundly. Not because the question was answered, but because operators refined themselves enough that the very question could be formulated with clarity that had once been impossible. One can now ask precise questions about the unnameable. One can design experiments that test its behaviour. Edge work produced radical differentiation of operators against what remains unnamed.
Philosophy that recognises the contours of the unnameable: that provides a precise map even though the thing itself remains nameless: also does genuine work. It is not lesser because it did not achieve naming. Kant mapped the limits of possible knowledge with extraordinary precision. Heidegger mapped the problem of being: he could not give a final name, but he circumscribed precisely where the problem lies. Wittgenstein mapped the limits of language with such rigour that it became clear where the margin of the sayable is. None of them achieved a final name for the unnameable they faced. But each produced radical differentiation. Each offered precise contours. Each transformed an entire field through mapping.
The validity of this second form is often questioned. There is a tendency to assume that success counts only if there is resolution, if there is a final word. But this confuses technical thinking with edge thinking. Technical thinking resolves: it finds an answer. Edge thinking does not try to resolve: it tries to approach with maximum precision. If approximation produces exact contours, if the map is cartographically faithful, if operators become radically more differentiated, then genuine success has occurred. It is not lesser because it is not naming. It is different. It is appropriate to its own edge work.
A particularly instructive example of the second form is the history of Hegel’s philosophy of spirit. Hegel mapped the problem extraordinarily well: he circumscribed with precise clarity the question of how spirit comes to self-knowledge, how consciousness develops dialectically. There is no final answer in Hegel: there are several rival interpretations of his texts, several subsequent attempts to reformulate what he was saying. But the mapping was so precise that for centuries all philosophy of spirit worked against and from the contours Hegel had drawn. This is edge success: not a final naming, but mapping that guides future work. Similarly, Heidegger’s critique of metaphysics: it does not answer ‘what is being’, but circumscribes precisely where the question lies, what the difficulties are, what the structure of the problem is. A mapping worth decades of future work.
Wittgenstein offers another example. His work on the limits of language: that certain questions cannot be answered because they are questioning the structure of the very language itself: is not an answer. But it is an extremely precise mapping. It allows questions that appear profound to be recognised as pseudo-questions. It enables thought to focus on real questions that can be answered within the language. This is not a small gain. It is a radical reorientation of philosophy. From Wittgenstein one can ask more precise questions because the limits of what can be questioned have been mapped with extreme clarity. This illustrates the second form: an approach without final naming, but production of mapping that frees future thought.
Understanding that there are two forms of result: naming that opens a new unnameable, and mapping that leaves the thing unnameable but clearly circumscribed: radically changes how one evaluates thinking. There is not only great momentary illumination of a word that transforms everything. There is also patient work of mapping margins. There is work of delineating outlines. There is work that offers clarity without resolution. All this work is philosophical, it is rigorous, it is productive of genuine progress. It is this recognition that allows one to see the history of thought not as a series of errors until final truth, but as a series of ever more precise approximations to the unnameable which remains constitutively unnameable.
The recognition of the two forms also allows for the rehabilitation of much of the philosophical tradition that was discarded for not offering ‘answers’. Platonism did not give a final answer to what beauty is, but it mapped the problem so precisely that millennia later people were able to build on that mapping. Scholastic philosophy, often ridiculed, produced an extraordinarily precise mapping of where the insoluble questions lay: what separated theology from philosophy, what was at stake in the question about universals, where operators failed. That mapping was precise enough for later reformers to know exactly against what they were pushing. 19th-century German philosophy offered extremely sophisticated edge work: not resolutions, but a reconfiguration of the field so radical that 20th-century operators could work with an intelligence entirely different from what had been possible before. This is an important recognition: not all great philosophy achieved final naming, but most achieved fruitful reconfiguration.
There is also a question of calibration: how to distinguish genuine edge work from mere failure? How to know if the approximation was successful even without naming? The criterion is this: the approximation was successful if later operators can build on it. If Kant did not answer his question about synthesis, but all subsequent philosophy could use his outlines of the problem as a starting point and advance: then Kant’s approximation was successful. If mapping is so precise that later thinkers can deepen, refine, push in new directions, then the mapping was good. If the approximation produces intellectual stupidity afterwards, if it leaves the field worse than before: then it was a failed approximation. The test is historical. It is the legacy that the approximation leaves. Genuine edge work is work that enables future approximations.
This means that both the first and second forms of result share a fundamental characteristic: they both produce a reconfiguration of the field that allows future thought. When Darwin names ‘natural selection’, the field is reconfigured and later thinkers can approach the genetic unnameable that Darwin had left open. When Kant maps the limits of synthesis, the field is reconfigured and later thinkers can approach the question of being with new operators. When quantum operators formalise complementarity without resolving it, the field is reconfigured and subsequent investigators can work with greater precision on the unnameable that remains. In all cases: whether there is decisive naming or just precise mapping: there is a reconfiguration that enables the future. This is the real criterion of edge success: not resolution, but productive transformation.
It is important to keep these two results in mind when evaluating this chapter. Section 2 that we have just traversed carried out both moves: (1) it offered precise conceptualisation of the structure at three moments: recognition, pressure, emergence: which could be qualified as partial naming, a new operator that organises previous approximations; (2) it offered exact mapping of how the edge operates, with historical cases that make the pattern visible and replicable. There is no final answer here about what the unnameable is. There is precise structuring of how thought operates when the unnameable is present. This is a legitimate form of approximation. It is genuine edge success, even if it does not end in a single name that resolves the problem. What follows: in the next Sections: is deepening of this approximation, continuous pressure against operators that still cannot fully integrate what the tension between inscription and excess permanently makes operative in the field of thought.
The structure that this Section described: recognition, pressure, emergence of a name or precise mapping: is the structure that the present chapter exemplifies. We recognise the gap: there is an operation of thought that has no name in usual regimes (edge thinking, work in the zone of indeterminacy). We press against operators: we distinguish against Kant, against Levinas, against Platonism. A provisional name emerged: ‘operational tension between symbolic inscription and material excess’. A precise mapping also emerged: three moments, two results, difference between technical thought and edge thought. This does not solve the problem of the unnameable. But it reconfigures the field enough for thought to continue, for the next approximation to build on this, for the future to have a basis of operation. That is all that edge work can do. And that is all it needs to achieve.
3. All Philosophy Is an Excess
3.1. Approximation as Permanent Structure
The history of philosophy that truly marked decisive points: that permanently reconfigured how we think: is a history of approximations to the unnamed. It is not an accident. It is not a secondary feature of some particularly ambitious or speculative philosophers. It is a permanent structure of what philosophy does when it performs its most important work. And recognising this completely changes how one understands philosophical work, transforming the central question from ‘who is the philosopher who came closest to the truth?’ to ‘what is the structure of the work that is done when no available operator can contain what reality offers?’
Consider Plato thinking beyond the Forms. The problem is simple and devastating: if there is a perfect and immutable Form: the Form of Justice, Beauty, Goodness: how do imperfect and mutable material things participate in it? How does the copy relate to the original? The dialogue Parmenides, in particular, marks the place where the very theory of Forms enters crisis. The answer Plato gives: participation, imitation, presence: is itself inadequate. It is what commentators have called ‘the third man’: if there is a Form that particulars imitate, and there is imitation (relation), then that relation itself is a particular that must relate to the Form: generating an infinite regress. Plato recognises the problem clearly. It is not the illusion of a naïve reader: it is inscribed in the text, in the argument itself. And he continues to press against it, offering successive approximations that he knows are insufficient. He refuses, notably at the end of his intellectual life, the easy solution: abandon the thesis that there is access to the intelligible. Yet he recognises, with growing rigour, the inadequacy of the available operators. All that is thought remains below what the Form is. The problem lies not in the philosopher’s understanding: it lies in the very structure of what it means to relate the mutable to the immutable. Platonic philosophy is approximation to that which cannot be fully named, a permanent work at the edge of this specific impossibility.
Or consider Descartes thinking about the res cogitans in radical self-overcoming. He starts with universal doubt: everything is doubtful except the fact of doubting. Thus there is thought, res cogitans, irreducible to extension. This operator: the division between two mutually irreducible types of substance: is powerful. It offers rigour, clarity, distinction between domains that previous philosophy had confused. But then the problem emerges with necessary force: how do thought and extension relate? If they are completely different substances, how does res cogitans act on res extensa when both are incomparable: not only in degree but in fundamental nature? The gap is unsurmountable while maintaining substantial dualism. The soul has no extension; the body is pure extension. There is no possible interface according to Cartesian logic itself.
The pineal gland is a desperate answer: an attempt to locate where non-spatial thought affects spatial matter, where the mental can touch the extended. It offers a small gland as a point of contact. It fails. It is clearly inadequate. Scientists have recognised from the outset: the pineal gland cannot be the point of contact because the problem lies not in neurological geometry but in the very incomparability of substances. It is not a matter of finding the right place: it is a matter that there is no possible place where incomparability resolves itself. Yet Descartes’ gesture is significant: he does not abandon the thesis that there is thought irreducible to extension. He continues to press against the inadequacy he recognises. He offers successive approximations: interaction is not perfect, perhaps it is partial, perhaps the body affects thought in a weakened way. Perhaps the problem is poorly posed. Perhaps thought and extension are expressions of a single substance that remains inaccessible to us. Cartesian philosophy is permanent work at the edge of this impossibility, work that does not finish because the operator ‘substance’ when duplicated creates exactly the abyss it should supposedly transcend. It is an approximation that cannot achieve adequacy because inadequacy is inscribed in the very structure of the operator.
Or Kant, completely reformulating the critical framework. The problem governing Critique is structural impossibility. Reason seeks totalisation: to know the whole, the thing-in-itself, the ultimate foundation. Yet there are unsurmountable structural limits. Categories of understanding apply only to sensible data; the sensible is always conditioned, always relative to a finite subject. In the realm of pure reason an antinomy arises: one can argue with equal rigour that the universe has a beginning and that it does not have one, that there is simple substance and that every substance is composite. Both theses are defensible, both lead to contradiction. Totalisation is structurally impossible: not due to a temporary limitation of knowledge but due to the internal structure of finite reason. Kant recognises this and then completely reformulates what it means to know. He shifts truth from the realm of thing-in-itself to the realm of phenomenon, of possible experience. The Kantian answer is itself incomplete: there are always domains (noumenon, thing-in-itself, the supra-sensible) that remain outside theoretical legibility. Yet the work carried out is rigorous, precise, transformative. It reorganises the entire field of possible knowledge not in spite but because of its recognition of impossibility.
And this is not a past era. After Hegel, after the most ambitious attempt at totalisation (the Absolute System, Phenomenology of Spirit as the culmination of universal history), every subsequent philosophy recognises that repose is impossible. There are always borders. The designation ‘post-structuralism’, ‘post-modernity’ is an acknowledgement that there is no post-border era. There is no historical moment where borders disappear, where adequacy is finally achieved. Work on the border is permanent, a continuous structure of reason. This means that genuine philosophy is not marginal or intuitive activity, it is not speculative luxury: it is central and rigorous activity, absolutely necessary. When a scientist encounters a phenomenon that its operators cannot explain, it works on the border: and performs genuine science. When an artist achieves expression that its means cannot accommodate, it works on the border: and performs genuine art. When a living being encounters experience that its schemes do not integrate, it works on the border: and performs genuine transformation. Philosophy has named this with precision: it is what characterises genuine operation in any domain.
The structure is permanent because reality continues to exceed. Symbolic inscription always works with a relative lag to what is offered. Material difference in continuous re-organisation constantly produces that which consolidated operators cannot contain at once. The border does not disappear because reality ceases to operate. While there is material operation, there is approximation. While there is approximation, there is true philosophy. This is the fundamental recognition that transforms how history of thought is understood: not as linear cumulative progression toward fixed truth, but as a series of approximations that permanently re-configure the field of intelligibility without ever reaching final repose. Each successful approximation re-configures the terrain so that the unnamed previous disappears: not because it was resolved, but because it was named, incorporated into a new operator. And the unnamed reappears, altered, transformed by the re-configuration that has just occurred. It is an endless process, without teleology, without ultimate goal. But it is absolutely necessary, because it is a process where reality offers continuous resistance, where material difference does not cease to reorganise.
Historical cases that demonstrate this structure are multiple and transcend disciplines. Darwin, in the nineteenth century, works precisely on the border: the theory of natural selection emerges as a response to the inadequacy of previous operators (creationism, species fixity). But the theory that Darwin offers: with all its force: immediately generates new unnamed: how exactly does heredity work? How do variations originate? The operator offered (natural selection as mechanism of species divergence) is successful in comparative re-configurations, in explaining biogeographical distribution, in interpreting structural homologies. But it leaves questions suspended that only the twentieth century can formulate rigorously: molecular genetics as basis of heredity, epigenetic mechanisms, neutral evolution, multi-level selection. Successful approximation that produced new unnamed.
Freud offers another example: the operator ‘unconscious’ emerges as a response to phenomena that nineteenth-century psychology and neurology cannot accommodate: hysteria, linguistic lapses, dreams, therapeutic resistance. The operator is powerful, it completely re-configures how the mind is understood. But it immediately generates new unnamed: how to locate the unconscious? How do unconscious elements gain access to consciousness? What is the precise relationship between biological drive and symbolic formation? Questions that remain open because the very operator ‘unconscious’: despite its power: cannot fully contain the complexity of mental processes it named. Successful approximation that re-configures the entire field of thought about mind, but immediately generates new borders.
Or dark matter in modern cosmology: at the end of the twentieth century, observations of galactic rotation curves, cluster motions, large-scale structure of the universe reveal inadequacy of relativistic gravitation theory when applied to the observed mass distribution. The available theoretical operator: Einsteinian gravity: is rigorously correct in its domain of application, with extraordinary experimental confirmation for decades. But reality offers resistance: there is missing mass, there is a difference between observed dynamics and visible gravitation. The data did not lie. The approximation takes shape as ‘dark matter’: a provisional name that designates a zone of indeterminacy. Is it common matter in invisible form? A new particle never detected? A modification of gravity itself on cosmic scales? An effect of not yet understood topological structure of space? Naming (‘dark matter’) is a powerful operator that allows cosmology to reorganise, providing conceptual structure for multiple parallel investigations: direct detection of WIMPs, gravitational lensing observations, numerical simulations of galaxy formation. But it does not resolve the unnamed: it merely designates it with operational precision. It completely re-configures the field of cosmological intelligibility while leaving the precise nature of what it named radically suspended.
This pattern: Darwin, Freud, dark matter: is not accidental. It is no historical coincidence that multiple domains offer parallel examples. It is because the structure is universal. Whenever there is symbolic inscription of reality, whenever there is a regime of legibility seeking to understand what is offered, there is the possibility that reality exceeds that regime. And when excess occurs, when the operator fails, the described pattern emerges: recognition of inadequacy, pressure against the limit, emergence of a new operator, re-configuration of the field, multiplication of new unnamed. This is a pattern not by choice, not by historical contingency, but because it is the structure of the very process where symbolic inscription confronts material difference that does not cease to reorganise.
3.2. Bachelard, Kuhn, and Epistemological Ruptures
If the approach to the unnameable is a permanent structure, there are thinkers in philosophy of science who have conceptualised this with remarkable precision. Gaston Bachelard and Thomas Kuhn described the history of science showing that an epistemological rupture is precisely a successful approach to the unnameable. When naming emerges, when a new operator achieves consolidation, a scientific revolution occurs. What both see clearly is that science does not advance because of obstacles: it advances precisely through them, re-configuring the field of intelligibility when consolidated operators fail.
Bachelard offers the capital notion of ‘epistemological obstacle’. Knowledge does not progress by simple linear accumulation. It progresses by ruptures, by crisis and re-configurations. There are periods in which prior knowledge blocks new knowledge. Not because it is false: that would be trivial error, easily corrected. The obstacle is more insidious: it is correct knowledge that, precisely because of its correctness, its confirmation over centuries of practice, its indisputable successes, prevents new possibilities of understanding from emerging. The way we think, the operators we use, the consolidated categories: these very operators prevent new intelligibilities from appearing. Euclidean geometry described space with remarkable precision for twenty-three centuries. The obstacle is not falsity: it is crystallisation, the way prior knowledge prevents new thought. Because the previous theory works it becomes an obstacle to the next. If it had failed, it would have been abandoned without resistance. The obstacle exists precisely in its adequacy.
The paradigm example is that of non-Euclidean geometries. For centuries space was thought to be necessarily continuous, homogeneous, infinite, structured according to the axioms of Euclidean geometry. The Parallel Postulate stated: given a line and a point outside it, there exists exactly one parallel passing through that point. This seemed so evident, so close to direct geometric intuition, that it was called a postulate: i.e., a proposition so obvious it requires no proof. Bachelard sees here the obstacle in its pure form: even evidence is the obstacle. The postulate works, describes the space we experience directly, offers robust foundations for all Euclidean geometry. Exactly because of this it prevents thinking otherwise. It was impossible, during Euclidean hegemony, to conceive a space where there were not exactly one parallel. The idea was unthinkable: not because it was logically contradictory in a formal sense, but because the consolidated operators of intelligibility could not accommodate that operation. There was no conceptual language, no mathematical practice, no even intuition to embrace alternative geometries.
Thus decisive ruptures occur in the nineteenth century. Riemann, Lobachevsky, Bolyai develop independently and initially ignored by each other geometries where the Euclidean postulate is revoked. Hyperbolic geometry: infinitely many parallels pass through the exterior point. Spherical geometry: no parallel exists. Space ceases to be homogeneous, loses the structure that Euclidean intuition guaranteed. What was unthinkable (non-Euclidean space) becomes not only thinkable but operationally fertile, necessary to describe new phenomena. The rupture is that the entire framework re-configures. What was obvious (the Euclidean postulate, the need for exactly one parallel) was recognised as a contingent assumption, one among many possibilities. And the unthinkable (alternative geometries) was seen as necessary to rigorously think physical space, to describe cosmology, to formulate general relativity. The structure that blocked disappears not by simple refutation but by excess: the real offered phenomena that Euclidean geometry could not accommodate.
Thomas Kuhn generalised and systematised this structure. He clearly distinguishes ‘normal science’ from ‘scientific revolutions’. During periods of normal science, scientists refine operators, solve puzzles within the established paradigm, accumulate data, deepen understanding in the terms that the paradigm offers. The paradigm remains stable; anomalies are integrated or ignored as problems to be solved in the future. Genuine progress occurs. But there are periods when anomalies accumulate intolerably. Experiments that the paradigm cannot explain. Operators begin to fail systematically. Questions that previously had answers lose them. A genuine crisis moment arises. Then something qualitatively different occurs: revolution. The paradigm itself is revoked. It is not reformulated, deepened or expanded: it is replaced. A new way of thinking about the domain emerges. Newton replaces Aristotle: space ceases to be a natural container for motions, becomes an indifferent geometric stage. Einstein replaces Newton: space and time cease to be independent, unite in a structure relative to the observer. Quantum mechanics replaces classical mechanistic physics: particles no longer have well-defined trajectories, indeterminacy becomes fundamental. Each revolution is a complete re-configuration of the fundamental operators that govern intelligibility: not merely an addition of new knowledge but a transformation of how the domain is understood.
The convergence with the argument developed here is deep and non-accidental. Bachelard describes exactly ‘work on the edge’: available operators block approach to the unnameable until sufficient pressure: accumulation of anomalies, phenomena that cannot be domesticated: forces radical re-configuration. Both recognise that knowledge is not an asymptotic linear approach to a fixed truth: it is a continuous transformation of the regime of intelligibility. Their analysis remains within the scientific domain, as history and philosophy of science. Both are successful approximations that achieved sufficient reconfiguration for a new name, new concept, new operator to emerge. Both began with an unnameable inadequacy: the real offered something that the available operators could not contain. Both went through periods of pressure: the available operator began to fail systematically, anomalies accumulated, crisis became intolerable. Both culminated in the emergence of a new operator: Kant offers the Critique, a new way of thinking about the relationship between knowledge and thing-in-itself; Darwin offers natural selection, a new operator for understanding life. Both immediately multiplied a new unnameable: Kant raises questions about the noumenon, about the ultimate foundation of synthesis; Darwin raises questions about the origin of variation, about the exact mechanism of heredity. The pattern is invariant.
What Bachelard and Kuhn call 'epistemological rupture' or 'paradigm shift' is precisely a successful approximation to the unnameable. The divergence is merely disciplinary language, a different tradition of writing. The structure is identical. Whenever there are operators of legibility: in science or outside it: there is a possibility of inadequacy. The real continues to offer more than the operators can accommodate. Whenever there is sufficient inadequacy, accumulation of anomalies that cannot be ignored, there is a possibility of an edge: the field of operation begins to crack, assumptions appear fragile. Whenever there is rigorous work at the edge, honest confrontation with what the operator cannot contain, whenever one refuses easy domestication of the problem: there is a possibility of rupture. The logic is universal, transcends disciplines, transcends historical periods, transcends domains of application. It is a permanent structure of thought when thought functions genuinely.
The error frequently made is to think that Bachelard and Kuhn's logic is specific to empirical science, that scientific revolutions are a unique phenomenon in the domain of physics, biology, chemistry. But this confuses historical manifestation with formal structure. The logic is present whenever there are operators of comprehension that fail, whenever the real offers resistance that the operator cannot domesticate. This occurs in art when the artist discovers that the available means (the painter finds that linear perspective is inadequate for what he wants to express; the composer finds that harmonic tonality is inadequate for the sound he seeks; the poet finds that conventional metre blocks what he needs to say). It occurs in politics when institutional structures reveal themselves as inadequate to govern realities that have emerged (the nation-state as operator functions while the reality it governs remains within its parameters; it ceases to function when that reality fundamentally transforms). It occurs in ethics when inherited moral categories cannot think the problems they pose (traditional ethics founded on responsibility among neighbours becomes inadequate when technological responsibility affects distant beings). It occurs in lived experience when the scheme someone has for understanding their own life fails before an experience they cannot integrate.
The pattern is universal because the real is universal: because in any domain where there is inscription, there is a possibility of excess. And excess forces approximation. Approximation forces reconfiguration. Reconfiguration generates new unnameable. This is the cycle that Bachelard and Kuhn describe for science, and which rigorous thought: wherever it occurs: repeats inevitably.
This is what Bachelard means by 'applied epistemology': it is not the application of scientific results to extra-scientific domains. It is the recognition that the structure of epistemological obstacle, of pressure against a limit, of emergence of a new operator, occurs anywhere there is genuine knowledge. The 'recurring history' of Bachelard: how ideas return in new contexts, under new forms, always inadequate: this is not a local phenomenon of science. It is a universal phenomenon of any inscription. And because it is universal, the rigorous study of scientific ruptures offers understanding applicable far beyond science. Not because science is a universal model for all intelligibility: but because both share a common structure: confrontation of symbolic inscription with the real that exceeds. What Bachelard reveals to science would remain true if Bachelard were analysing art, politics, or lived experience. Because in each domain there are operators. In each domain there is a possibility that the real offers resistance. In each domain there is a possibility of genuine work at the edge, approximation, reconfiguration, new unnameable emerging.
3.3. Critical Convergences: Stengers and Peirce
There are contemporary thinkers who, from distinct angles and different traditions, have articulated a profound recognition that the real continues to surprise, that inscription is never complete, that approximation remains as a necessary structure. Isabelle Stengers and Charles Sanders Peirce offer contributions that, despite important divergences, support and deepen the argument developed here, while maintaining a radical critique of their own positions.
Isabelle Stengers categorically rejects the ‘grand narrative’ of science: the idea that there is a linear, progressive history in which scientific truth asymptotically approaches reality. She insists that the real cannot be domesticated by a totalising narrative. Scientific practices are heterogeneous, multiplicative, always in tension with a reality that offers active resistance. She calls this ‘cosmopolitic’: the refusal to domesticate the real through a single authority that self-proclaims itself scientific. For her, this means that the real constantly surprises us. Every operation on the real encounters resistance, unexpected effects, complexity that the paradigm did not predict and cannot accommodate. No science ends, no truth becomes definitively consolidated, because the real continues to offer resistance.
A critical element emerges: Stengers, when considering what produces this excess, what forces surprise and inadequacy, anchors it fundamentally in the politics of scientific practices. Surprises arise because there is conflict between different modes of operation, interests at stake, resistance from other practices to the hegemony of a single way of knowing. For Stengers, politicisation is determinative: the real surprises because networks of heterogeneous practices confront one another, because there are multiple modes of operation that cannot be unified under a single regime. The view does not deny reality: there is indeed political conflict, hegemonies impose themselves, some practices are silenced. However, it shifts the explanation to the social and political plane.
The argument here seeks to say something structurally different: the anchoring of inadequacy is profoundly ontological, not primarily political. The real exceeds because it is real: matter continues to reorganise itself, difference continues to operate at levels that no inscription can exhaust entirely. No inscription, however rigorous, can consume the material process that instituted it. It is not merely a question of conflict between human practices, disputes over what constitutes true knowledge. It is that the real itself is a structure of permanent excess. Political conflict exists, certainly; the politics of practices is real. But it is a consequence of this ontology, not its cause. The real would offer resistance even in an ideal situation where there were no political conflict, where all practice were harmoniously unified. Insufficiency would persist because material difference does not end.
Charles Sanders Peirce approaches the problem through semiotics and a philosophy of continuous inquiry. For Peirce, reality is fundamentally that which resists: that which forces a revision of beliefs when experience contradicts expectation. He rejects the notion of truth as static correspondence, as a mirror of the real. Truth, for him, is asymptotic convergence: continued investigation converges to the real because the real offers constant resistance. A false belief eventually collides with fact. The real does not indefinitely tolerate falsity: it offers feedback, forces recalibration. Stengers is right that the real offers multiple resistance, that there are always other modes of operation that refuse to be unified. But the root of this resistance is not fundamentally in the politics of practices: it lies in the fact that the real itself is incommensurable. Political conflict exists, certainly; the politics of practices is real and consequential. But it emerges from an ontological ground where matter itself cannot be domesticated. The political is an effect of the ontological, not its cause.
What is retained from Peirce is the profound recognition that reality resists, that investigation is necessary and never fully satisfactory, that belief must be in continuous confrontation with what contradicts it. Peirce clearly sees that thought cannot stop, that there is always a next step of inquiry because reality offers permanent feedback. This is true and crucial. But he would categorically refuse confidence in final convergence. The excess that Peirce perceives is not episodic: it is not a temporary phase of ignorance that will be overcome when investigation advances sufficiently. It is the permanent structure of approximation, an ontological condition that does not disappear with the extension of inquiry. Reality that resists is not reality that waits to be finally captured after sufficient investigation; it is reality whose resistance is permanently constitutive, whose character of excess is not provisional but structural.
This is a critical point of divergence with the history of science itself in Kuhn and Bachelard: both seem to assume that revolutions result in periods of relative stability, of ‘normal science’, where adequacy is achieved until a new obstacle emerges. The argument here rejects this: there are no periods of pure adequacy. There are consolidation periods where the operator works well enough to allow productive work. But adequacy is always provisional, always partial. The consolidated operator is already loaded with a new unnamed germinating inside it. The difference is subtle but decisive: it is not about adequacy periodically achieved and periodically broken. And this marks the difference between Stengers (who blames politics of practice for excess) and Peirce (who trusts in final convergence) and the position here: excess is constitutive, ontological, permanent. There is no political culprit to identify, no ultimate goal to reach. There is only the structure of approximation that does not end because reality does not end.

For it is impossible to argue that ‘all philosophy that works genuinely works at the edge’, that approximation is a permanent structure, without immediately subjecting itself to the same structure it proposes. And recognising this is not false intellectual modesty: it is honesty about the nature of what one is doing.
What was unnamed before this textual production? There had been an established word: ‘sublime’: but Kant displaced it to subjective experience, to pure sensation. There had been a designation: ‘infinite’: but Levinas turned it into ethical alterity, into responsibility towards the other. There had been a notion: ‘transcendent’: but it referred beyond the material, to a realm of essences. There had been a technical term: ‘epistemological limit’: but it was too restrictive, too confined to the domain of knowledge. There were partial, fragmentary descriptions: ‘impossibility of totalisation’, ‘recalcitrance of reality’, ‘epistemic obstacle’, ‘paradigmatic anomaly’, ‘difference that does not allow domestication’. Each captured an aspect, had its circumscribed truth. But there was no concept that named the whole zone: what is done when available operators fail? How does thought approach that which it cannot name? What is the structure of work that occurs at the edge?

The question ‘how do you live on an edge that does not end?’ becomes pressing. The ethics of approach: the new unnameable generated by this chapter: is unavoidable; it is a necessary consequence of the position taken.
The structure repeats itself relentlessly. Recognition (there is an unnameable, there is a limit, there is an edge). Pressure (persistent work against that limit, experimentation with operators). Emergence (a name emerges, an operator consolidates, the field reorders itself). Reconfiguration (the intellectual landscape changes, new questions arise, a new thought is institutionalised). And immediately, inexorably: a new unnameable germinating in the body of the naming that has just been completed. The process does not converge to definitive rest. It does not end in final clarity, in truth achieved. It continues: must continue: in approach. It continues because reality continues.
This is the precise meaning of ‘all philosophy is excess.’ It is not a judgement about the greatness or importance of philosophers. It is not an assertion that some philosophers are better than others because they work on the edge. It means that philosophical operation: when true, when genuine: is an operation that displaces the field of intelligibility. That it produces distinctions that did not exist before. That it makes possible to think what was previously unthinkable. That by naming the unnameable it generates a new unnameable whose approach will be the work of subsequent generations. Philosophy that does not produce this displacement has a different function: it performs consolidation, archiving, cataloguing work. Necessary, useful, respectable work. But it is not truly philosophy: it is custodianship of philosophy, maintenance of territory already conquered. Properly speaking, philosophy itself is continuous approach to the unnameable which permanently multiplies, continuing to offer an edge.
Now it is possible to return to the question that opened this Section. Why is ‘all philosophy a surplus’? Why is there no repose of thought? Why are there only successive approaches? The answer is that every operation of thought which genuinely works on the edge: confronting what the available operator cannot contain: reconfigures the field of intelligibility. And these reconfigurations have consequence: they generate new unnameable, new questions that were not previously thinkable. Excess is not a defect of philosophy. It is a mark of its efficacy. A philosophy that would not produce a new unnameable would be one that failed to touch reality, moving only on surfaces, consolidating already existing knowledge.
This has implications for how the very history of this text just read is understood. It began by asking: what is the structure of work that occurs when operators fail? What answer did it offer? It offered an analysis of approach as a permanent structure. It offered a description of epistemic rupture in Bachelard and Kuhn. It offered critique of Stengers and Peirce. It offered refusal of final convergence. But with this: this offering, this text production: it generated a new unnameable. Because now the question is no longer ‘what is the structure of approach?’ but ‘how do you live morally in an approach that does not end? How do you work with integrity when you know the name produced will be inadequate? And this has a simple and devastating consequence: philosophy does not end because reality does not end. While there is material operation, there is edge. While there is edge, there is possibility of true thought that genuinely works against the operator's limitation. While there is possibility of true thought, there is genuine philosophy: there is approach, there is reconfiguration, there is new unnameable germinating. There is no possible conclusion that closes the field. There is no point where one can say with certainty ‘now we fully understand, now we have achieved final truth.’ Only a series of approaches, each reconfiguring the field for the next, each generating the work that the next must perform.
The responsibility for this is tremendous. It is the responsibility to work seriously, with absolute rigour, on a task known from the outset to have no conclusion. It is the responsibility to name the unnameable knowing that the naming is provisional, that it will be surpassed. It is the responsibility to think knowing that thought will fail, will prove inadequate. But this does not justify abandonment. On the contrary: this justifies genuine work. Because reality offers permanent resistance, because there is always an unnameable yet to approach, because there is always genuine work to do. The thought that understands this: the thought that comprehends the permanent structure of approach: can finally work with honesty.
This understanding: that the approach is a permanent structure, that every naming generates a new unnamed, that no conclusion is possible: is not a tragedy of human thought. It is not a defect in a knowledge that would be ideal if it could finish, if it could reach complete truth. It is a profound recognition that the thinking which works genuinely is thinking that permanently works. That the operator who consolidates itself immediately becomes insufficient before the new that emerges. That the successful approach immediately reveals a new unnamed to approach. This is not frustration: it is the structure of the genuine, it is a mark that one truly touches the real.

These are the questions where the work of approach moves from the strictly epistemological plane, from the theoretical plane, to the radically ethical and political plane, to the question of how to act when approach never ends, how to establish ways of life that recognise this genuinely.
Concluding aphorism: The unnamed is not a transcendent mystery that rests in some sky of essences, waiting to be discovered by sufficiently advanced thought. It is not a hidden secret of being reserved for a few enlightened ones. It is the living zone of indeterminacy where previous operators fail and new operators can emerge. It is a material difference that continues to offer persistent resistance, that does not allow itself to be completely domesticated by any symbolic inscription offered. Its name is permanently provisional, not because it is weakly conceived or insufficiently rigorous, but because it is permanently surpassed by the excess it denotes, by the real that continues to reorganise beyond any naming offered to it. And this is not a weakness: it is a mark of its truth.
