1. Excess as Motor and Impediment
1.1. The Seemingly Simple Question: Ceasing as Pause vs. Ceasing as Terminus
The question that opens this chapter is, at first sight, a question of mere semantics: a matter of terminological precision about what the word ‘cease’ exactly means. But it is misleading. It is not merely a semantic question because the way in which two radically different meanings of ‘cease’ are distinguished structures two opposing ontological positions that have fragmented Western philosophy as a whole, and the error that unites these two positions: a systematic confusion between the two meanings: feeds half of the problems that the metaphysical tradition has never managed to solve satisfactorily.
Cease has two completely distinct meanings, and the difference between them is absolutely fundamental. First meaning: cease as local pause, as an interval where a specific operation suspends itself in a context where other operations continue uninterruptedly. This sense is operationally transparent, empirically verifiable, ontologically real. A water molecule, for example, oscillates continuously in different electronic configurations: its atoms flow in permanent micro-movements, its chemical bonds vibrate at terahertz frequencies. But in a period of a few milliseconds the molecule can enter a metastable state where its structural conformation stabilises locally, where the oscillation appears diminished in magnitude, where there is relative pause to prior motion. This pause is real: it can be measured with spectroscopy, detected through nuclear magnetic resonance, described in precise terms of molecular dynamics. But the pause does not mean that the molecule ceased to exist as a process. It only means that a specific type of reorganisation: rapid conformational change: temporarily suspended itself while other processes continue. The internal energy persists, the continuous vibration persists at a deeper level (the vibrational and rotational levels of molecules never rest completely), only the visible manifestation of change diminished in perceptible scale.
A spiral galaxy offers an even more eloquent example of this distinction. It persists in a relatively stable configuration for billions of years: its spiral arm structure that rotates as a density pattern, its dark matter halo enveloping the whole structure, its dense central stellar population do not undergo radical transformation over periods of only a few million years when observed as a set. There is relative pause on scales of a few million years. But this pause is never absolute rest. Internally, within the galaxy, permanent re-organisations operate simultaneously at multiple scales: new stars continuously form in regions of interstellar cloud collapse (the star formation rate in a typical galaxy is several solar masses per year), others die in cataclysmic supernovae that eject matter into intergalactic space, binary systems migrate through the spiral arms by dynamic friction and gravitational interactions, the continuous internal dynamics of stellar collisions (rarely fatal on a galactic scale but structurally relevant) re-configures orbits and trajectories. The galaxy pauses at certain temporal observation scales (million-year scales), but continues radical transformation at other simultaneous scales (years to million-year scales for specific processes). The pause is real, local and relative to a particular temporal observation scale. It is not absolute pause.
Second meaning, radically distinct: cease as definitive termination, as terminal rest, as a state in which any possibility of subsequent reorganisation is eliminated, in which no further change is conceivable, in which the form has achieved eternal crystalline plenitude and can no longer undergo any transformation. This is the sense that traditional metaphysics invoked when speaking of ‘eternal rest’, ‘immutable perfect form’, ‘terminal state where history ends’. Plato imagined this state in the Eternal Forms: perfect structures that never change because they have already attained completeness, without potential for further transformation. Aristotle imagined this state in the Unmoved Mover: first cause that moves everything without moving itself, which is in a state of eternal contemplation of itself without any external activity. Hegel imagined this state in Absolute Knowledge: a future point where all contradiction would be reconciled and history would reach rest in final synthesis. This is also the sense that: inversely: Newtonian classical physics used to think of the thermal death of the universe: a distant future state where all useful energy has dissipated completely, where only uniform rest persists, where no complex structure can remain because there is no potential difference, where the universe reaches total thermal equilibrium and remains so for eternity. The two senses cannot be confused without catastrophic consequence for thought.
The historical confusion between these two senses: the illegitimate universalisation of the first meaning (local pause) as if it revealed the second (terminal termination): is precisely what structures fixity and offers its deceptive foundation: the belief that because there are local pauses, because there are periods where change is imperceptible at a specific temporal scale, therefore there is a fundamental regime of rest to which everything tends to return, such that change is exception and permanence is the natural pattern. Fixity takes correct observation about local pauses and performs an invalid logical leap: it turns local truth into universal truth, temporary pause into fundamental regime.
The assertion that structures this chapter: ‘the reorganisation does not cease’: is an assertion about the second sense only. It is a categorical refusal of terminal termination. It is a rigorous insistence that no material form reaches a final state where subsequent reorganisation becomes impossible, where excess would cease to be generated, where transformation would stop for eternity. It is not a negation of local pauses: these are real, observable, and operationally relevant. It is a negation that the local pauses reveal deep ontological truth about the real, that they correspond to something in the fundamental structure of existence. Reorganisation does not cease because there is no terminal: because there is no stable final state where a form could rest eternally preserved, where the excess generated by its constitutive processes would cease to exist, where material operation could stop without the form dissolving completely. Local pauses are real and important and structure the experience of time as ordered, as having pattern, as intelligible. But pauses do not define what the fundamental real is. The fundamental real is a permanent process of reconfiguration with no determined final point.
1.2. The Genealogy of Two Symmetrical Errors: Incompleteness as Ontological Necessity
Fixity and catastrophism do not arise from intellectual perversity or theoretical frivolity. They arise from a much deeper, more systemic error: a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means for a form to exist, for a system to function, for an operation to persist beyond a singular instant. There is an illusion that pervades all Western metaphysical tradition with the insistence of an obsession: the illusion that perfect integration is possible, that an order could fully absorb the excess generated by its constitutive processes, that it would be better for a form to completely eliminate the overflow produced by its operation, that completeness is the ideal state toward which things should tend. This illusion is false, not because it is contingently unrealisable in practice (not because it would be better technically, if only we were sufficiently sophisticated, if only we invented more perfect machines, if only we achieved absolute precision engineering), but because it is logically contradictory in fundamental terms. The logical proof is simple, does not depend on any particular empirical property, and operates at the level of pure conceptual analysis.
If a form integrates something new: if it incorporates into its functioning something that was not present before, if it absorbs the excess that its operation generates in its internal processes, if it succeeds in making overflow part of the interior order: then the form is no longer exactly the same as it was in its prior state. Integration implies necessary transformation. The absorption of the new implies change in the structure that absorbs it, reconfiguration of constraints, reorganisation of internal relations. This is not contingent but logically necessary: not merely factual, but ontological right. Therefore total integration without transformation is logically impossible, contradictory in terms. If the form were to absorb its excess completely while remaining identical to itself: maintaining precisely the same configuration, the same constraints, the same relations: it would at once be the original form and a different form. That would be contradiction, logical impossibility, inconceivable. Thus incompleteness is not contingent, not a defect that might perhaps have been avoided under favourable circumstances. It is not a design flaw that a ‘better designed’ form could avoid. It is not an execution failure that greater technical precision could correct. It is structural necessity. It is inherent to the nature of any operating form. A form could not be different without ceasing to be a form: i.e. without ceasing to be something that persists temporally while maintaining some degree of identity even as it continually transforms.
Empirical proof of this logical necessity is found in any living organism that absorbs something new from its environment. An immune cell encountering a pathogen: a virus or bacterium it has never seen before, which has no evolutionary memory to recognise: cannot absorb the pathogen while remaining exactly the same cell as before the encounter. To integrate the appropriate response, to process the threat, to continue alive in face of the new challenge, it must fundamentally reconfigure its biochemical configuration. It expresses different genes (activates genes that were silenced, silences genes that were constitutive), produces different cytokines, alters its cell membrane, changes its receptor binding affinity for transmembrane receptors, modifies its own lipid structure and protein composition. This is not a failure of the cell: it is success, precisely what allows survival. But it is necessary transformation, not contingent. There is no possible way to absorb the new threat while remaining identical. The philosophical concept that absorbs radical critique, that attempts to answer an objection that denies its fundamental premises, cannot integrate genuine objection without changing its own structure. If a concept is truly tested by a decisive counter-example, if the objection reveals an aspect that the concept left in the shadows, then the concept that genuinely incorporates the critique is another concept, it is new, it is transformed. Not because it failed: but because it succeeded in integrating new knowledge, in absorbing perturbation.
Here arises the absolutely crucial distinction that metaphysical tradition has systematically confused and mixed: the distinction between ontological incompleteness and epistemic defect. Incompleteness is not a correctable defect through greater intellectual effort. It is not an epistemic lacuna that could be fully filled if we were simply intelligent enough, if we invested sufficient philosophical endeavour, if we achieved the right perspective or suitable method. Incompleteness is a structural necessity, an ontological property of reality itself, not an epistemic problem that would belong only to our relationship with things. The confusion between ontological incompleteness (a property of reality in itself) and epistemic defect (a property of our knowledge) structures almost all traditional Western metaphysics and offers its hidden foundation. Plato implicitly assumes that if we could simply gain direct access to the immutable Forms: if we could transcend opinion and attain true knowledge: we would perceive a complete, perfect reality, already constitutively whole, without incompleteness because there is no conflict in the Forms, no contradiction, only eternal identity. Aristotle assumes that rest is the natural state of things (the state toward which they tend when there is no external cause moving them) and that motion is a deviation that would be eliminated if the causes maintaining it disappeared. Hegel assumes that there is a future temporal point: Absolute Knowledge: where all contradiction is ultimately reconciled in the universal concept, where history reaches rest in final synthesis. Kant assumes that there are a priori structures of knowledge which, if fully explicated, would reveal transcendental necessity behind all appearances. All these thinkers: who are truly giants of thought, who produced extraordinarily sophisticated systems: share an underlying fundamental error: the belief that the incompleteness we see empirically, that we constantly experience, is a manifestation of a deep defect that could be eliminated with adequate knowledge, that if we were to know truly, absolutely, we would see reality already constitutively complete; that incompleteness is property only of our epistemological relation to things, not an intrinsic property of the things themselves.
The radical inversion that is necessary is this: reality is not imperfect because it is incomplete. It is incomplete by founding structure, by ontological characteristics that no knowledge could eliminate. This incompleteness is not a threat: it is the condition of possibility for any material operation. A perfectly integrated universe: where there were no excess, where nothing overflows from the forms that contain it, where there was no difference wholly unincorporated, where each process produced only what it could absorb: would be a dead, frozen, statistical universe. It would be the final state of universal thermal death: absolute equilibrium in which no differentiated structure could subsist because every differentiated structure requires potential difference, requires energy flow, requires overflow that cannot be fully integrated. Life: all biological life, all life in the broadest sense: exists precisely because there is excess that cannot be fully incorporated into the present functioning of the form. Cellular metabolism works because energy enters (nutrients, light, energy-rich molecules), is processed, produces useful work (protein synthesis, maintenance of osmotic gradient, damage repair), but also produces heat and waste that cannot be completely reused in central metabolic processes and must be expelled to the environment. If a cell could integrate all energy without loss, if no heat were dissipated, if no residue accumulated and had to be eliminated, the cell could not function: it would enter thermal equilibrium with its surroundings, lose its organisation and dissolve. Death: truly understood: is exactly this: cessation of metabolism, complete rest, perfect integration with an environment where no potential gradient persists, where there is no flow, where there is no life.
Radical ethical gain from this understanding: incompleteness ceases to be an existential threat, ceases to be a miserable condition against which we should struggle, and becomes a continuous opportunity for meaningful action. Because there is always incompleteness, there is always the possibility of making genuine difference. Because there is always unintegrated excess, there is always space for true creativity, for materially significant reorganisation, for transformation that can alter what is real. A form that could achieve perfect completeness would be fully crystallised, fixed, incapable of any new action, doomed to repeat indefinitely the same pattern. A form that persists in permanent incompleteness: continuously generating excess it cannot completely absorb, always under need of reorganisation: is a living form, a dynamic form, a form capable of responding to the new, a form able to transform into previously impossible configurations. This is liberation from the intended and illusory rest that tradition sought. This is the permanent responsibility to process what overflows from itself. And this is, paradoxically, true security: not security against change (which is impossible and would be death), but integrated recognition that every form lives through change, that every rest is local and provisional, that every stability is a perpetual achievement that must be re-made continuously because excess never ceases to be generated.
1.3. Heraclitus Corrected: Articulated Flux, Not Indiscriminate Chaos
The history of thought offers two privileged interlocutors on the question of how to understand what continually reorganises without falling into fixity on one side or catastrophism on the other. Heraclitus of Ephesus, in the sixth century before Christ, intuitively grasped something essential and articulated a first radical and systematic rejection of permanence as the fundamental regime of reality. Fragment 48: panta rhei, everything flows: became legendary through the centuries, invoked whenever change, impermanence, transitoriness is spoken of, and representing in a condensed way an entire ontological vision. Heraclitus rejected permanence as the fundamental regime. He rigorously asserted that nothing is truly fixed, that every form is transient, that one does not enter the same river twice because the river flows continuously: the water that passes is different at each instant, the circumstances of flow have changed, even though the name ‘river’ may seem to indicate the same entity, the ontological reality of the river is precisely permanent flow. This is real gain, fundamental truth that must be preserved with absolute rigour and never abandoned completely.
But Heraclitus’s move beyond this central truth: the generalisation of that true in absolute flow as the ultimate category: is already a deviation, an error symmetrical to the fixity he rejects. Heraclitus transforms the legitimate rejection of permanence into an affirmation of undifferentiated flow as the unique and complete ontological truth. Everything changes permanently, everything is chaos, every order is an illusory appearance, every structure is fictitious. What exists is only pure change, transformation without pattern, undifferentiated chaos masked by false names that language and thought pretend refer to stable things. This movement: from legitimate truth to illegitimate absolutisation: is what produces metaphysical catastrophism. For a long time, especially in certain post-Heraclitean Hellenistic periods, this understanding was taken to a conclusion that seemed logically unavoidable: if everything flows, then nothing matters, so every action is vain, so contemplative rest is the sole sensible refuge against undifferentiated chaos. Cynicism arose from this reading of Heraclitus. Other readings reach the inverse conclusion: if everything flows, then nothing can be controlled by reason, so every attempt at rational order is doomed to failure. What Heraclitus saw clearly, but could not articulate with sufficient precision and nuance, is that flow is not undifferentiated chaos. There are different times of flow. There are multiple scales of reconfiguration. There are recognisable patterns even in the permanent process of transformation.
A water molecule flows in the sense that its electronic structure is in continuous vibration: its atoms never fully rest from thermal motion, never reach a state of absolute rest. But this molecule also flows in a completely different sense when it is part of a river that travels from mountain to ocean: it travels as part of a hydrological network that persists and is recognisable in its general structure although formed continuously from different molecules. The molecule is in flow at multiple scales simultaneously. Most of this flow: the intra-atomic vibrational motion of the molecular structure: is imperceptible to ordinary observation, it is not what we ordinarily call ‘river flows’. The perceptible flow: the macroscopic translation of the mass of water: is what we call a river flowing, an observation that persists for centuries in human narratives. Both are genuine flows. Both are real and operationally significant. But they are at entirely different scales, in incomprehensible temporal regimes. Heraclitus could not preserve this multiplicity of scales. He tended towards the absolutisation of a single experience of flow: the perceptible change at the human level of observation: as if it were deep universal truth, as if it revealed reality itself.
Plato, in the generation immediately following, saw a complement that Heraclitus deliberately ignored or rejected for philosophical reasons: he saw the logical and material impossibility that complete chaos could be radically disarticulated, that there could be no pattern at all, that multiplicity were truly undifferentiated. Plato rigorously argued that there must be structure, that there must be form, that pure total randomness cannot exist as the fundamental regime of reality. If Heraclitus was correct: if everything really flows indifferently, if there is no permanence whatsoever: how then is recognisability possible? How can different people agree that one thing is a tree and another is a stone? How can language function and communicate? How can science predict? How can regularities allow technology? Plato tried to solve this problem through ontological duplication which is truly problematic and would produce enduring theoretical consequences: an eternal world of perfect Forms inhabiting a separate transcendent plane, and a lower material world of corruptible copies that participate in the Forms but never fully attain them. This solution is not logically necessary to resolve the problem that Plato identified. The necessity that Plato correctly captured: that there is structure, real constraints, patterns: does not require two separate ontological worlds, nor ontological transcendence. It only requires clear articulation that reorganisation is operationally articulated, i.e. that it is not pure noise but structured differentiation according to material laws, that recognisable patterns exist even in systems far from thermal equilibrium.
What Heraclitus truly saw was that there is no permanent form, that there is no terminal rest, that every configuration is in a permanent process of transformation. This is true. What Plato truly saw was that there is no complete chaos, that there is structure, that there are recognisable patterns. This is also true. Both truths are logically compatible if the presumption that there is a single true regime to which all reality is subject is rejected. There is simultaneously permanent flow: nothing is terminal, nothing reaches eternal rest: and real structure: there are material constraints that limit what is possible. How can this be possible without contradiction? Precisely through multiple simultaneous temporal scales, through polyrhythm where each scale has its own pattern. A structure persists because its constituent parts reconfigure themselves, absorb and generate difference, process continuous excess. The structure is not prior to the processes that constitute it: it is a consequence of them, emerges from them, is an operator that material activity continuously produces through reconfiguration of parts. The structure does not block flow: it is the way in which flow articulates itself when observed at a specific time scale. This is what Heraclitus intuitively saw, but could not preserve without falling into indefensible absolutisation. This is what Plato tried to capture through problematic transcendence that is unnecessary. Truth lies in rejecting the dichotomy: neither only undifferentiated flow nor only fixed structure. Structured flow. Structure in permanent reconfiguration. A pattern that is preserved through uninterrupted transformation of its material constituents.
1.4. Excess as Structural Motor: Prigogine, Constitutive Irreversibility, and Continuous Reorganisation
If no form can fully integrate the excess that its processes generate, if incompleteness is a necessary structure of any operation that persists, what then is the physical and thermodynamic mechanism that explains this with precision? Why is excess inevitable? Why does no order achieve a state of perfect integration where subsequent reorganisation would be unnecessary? The answer lies in a rigorous understanding of how any functioning form: any system that is alive in the broadest sense, any operation that persists beyond a singular instant: operates through dynamics that necessarily produce perpetual excess. Ilya Prigogine, Belgian physical chemist who revolutionised the thermodynamic understanding of systems far from equilibrium, demonstrated this with extraordinary mathematical precision and rigorous experimental verification over decades of research.
Every functioning form: absolutely every one: is what Prigogine called a 'dissipative structure'. That is: any order that is not complete thermal death, any configuration that is not static equilibrium with its environment, any operation that has not ceased, functions precisely through an accelerated dissipation mechanism. The dissipative structure takes in energy from one side (inflow), performs useful work: builds complex molecules, maintains internal temperature different from ambient temperature, internally organises into patterns that persist and reproduce: but simultaneously exports to the other side (outflow) entropy, heat, disorder. If the structure ceased to dissipate: if it could close completely upon itself and retain all the energy it receives without expelling anything: it would reach thermal equilibrium with its environment and dissolve, disappearing as a differentiated form, as an organised configuration. A living cell is a dissipative structure by excellence. It imports nutrients, water, oxygen, all loaded with chemical potential energy. It builds complex proteins (an operation that requires energy), maintains a differentiated membrane with osmotic gradients (an operation that requires continuous energy). It reorganises DNA molecules for replication (an operation of extraordinary complexity that consumes energy). But it also expels waste (carbon dioxide, urea, other metabolites), dissipates heat to the environment (the body maintains temperature above ambient by continuous heat generation), produces local accelerated entropy. The speed at which the cell dissipates entropy to its environment is much greater than the speed at which it would if it were in thermal equilibrium: that is, the cell accelerates its own future entropic death in exchange for being able to be organised while it lives now. This is not a paradox: it is the fundamental mechanism of all biological life and of all persisting structure.
What Prigogine demonstrated with rigour: and this is of fundamental importance to understanding that reorganisation does not cease: is that life, all life, every form that persists beyond a singular instant, is not an anomaly that challenges the second law of thermodynamics. It is not an exception that violates physical laws. It lies at the very root of the second law operating in a regime far from equilibrium. The second law does not prohibit local order, complex structure, local decrease of entropy. It merely prescribes that any local order created, any reduction of entropy in one place, requires an increase of entropy elsewhere, requires flow of energy through the system, requires dissipation. Life exploits this masterfully. Life does not escape the second law: it exemplifies it in sophisticated and elegant form. Life accelerates locally the dissipation of a type of energy (solar light captured via photosynthesis, chemical energy from energy-rich molecules such as glucose) so that it can incorporate another type of energy into more complex structures (biomass, specialised tissues, nervous systems, organs). It exports disorder to the environment to sustain local order. This is not only compatible with the second law: it is an elegant demonstration of how the law operates in a creative and productive non-equilibrium regime.
The engine of this dynamic is simple in its essence, yet complex in its manifestations: there is always a potential difference between the structure and its environment. There is always a gradient that dissipates. There is always excess: energy that enters more than can be fully integrated into a single passage through metabolic operation, a gradient that decreases but which is continuously replenished by new incoming flow. This excess is ineliminable. If the cell could close itself completely and allow the gradient to disappear entirely: if it reached thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment: it would die, disorganising itself. If the organism could block the entry of new energy entirely, it would equilibrate with the environment and progressively dissolve into chaos. The persistence of any form requires the persistence of excess, the persistence of the gradient, the persistence of dissipation. Therefore excess is not marginal, not a secondary problem. It is central. It is structural. It is the condition of possibility for any form that is not death, any operation that persists.
Here emerges a deep understanding that completely repositions how one thinks about reorganisation: the excess generated by the constituent processes of any form: by its own material functioning, by its manner of being distant from equilibrium: cannot be entirely integrated into order without that order fundamentally redefining itself. This creates permanent and inescapable constraint. The form tends to organise itself in a certain way, to remain in a configuration that was selected or constructed, but the excess that this configuration generates continuously perturbs and pressures reorganisation. The form absorbs some of the excess, slightly reorganises, temporarily balances new internal relations: but new excess is generated by the absorption itself, by the reorganisation itself. This continues indefinitely without an endpoint. There is no point where excess is completely absorbed and no new excess subsequently generated. Reorganisation is perpetual as a necessary consequence, not contingent, not a defect that would be corrected with better engineering, but as an ineliminable structural property.
The importance of Prigogine lies in the fact that he demonstrates this with extraordinary physical precision, with equations, with experimentally verifiable predictions. It is not merely philosophical speculation, rhetorical argument or intuition that there is no complete integration. It is a verifiable property of any thermodynamic system far from equilibrium: a property that can be measured, calculated, predicted. Reorganisation does not cease because excess does not cease because dissipation is structural, because there is no way to close the system completely. Once this is understood: truly deeply understood, not merely intellectually accepted superficially but felt in its complete consequence for how one understands reality: it radically changes how one thinks about change, transitoriness, impermanence. It is not an existential threat to be fought. It is a structure that allows anything living, anything functioning beyond a singular infinitesimal instant. Continuous reorganisation is not condemnation to perpetual and miserable unrest. It is the condition of possibility for life, dynamism, an open future and not predetermined. Without perpetual reorganisation there would be no freedom: only freezing in a final crystallised form. Without permanent excess there would be no possibility of significant change: everything would be eternally determined and fixed. Excess is the motor that allows reality to remain alive, remain open, remain capable of genuine novelty.
Prigogine (Necessary Differentiation)
Prigogine's contribution is not merely technical or empirical. It is fundamentally philosophical: it radically repositions how we understand the nature of organisation, life, time. But his work contains errors that must be precisely identified and rejected:
Central gain to retain with rigour: Prigogine demonstrates that systems far from thermal equilibrium: systems that import energy, perform work, export entropy: can produce emergent order, complex structure, organisation that did not exist before. This is true and it is an absolutely fundamental gain. Irreversibility is not a curse: it is a condition of creativity. Entropy is not the enemy of life: it is the mechanism through which life operates. The non-equilibrium thermodynamics shows that complex order is compatible with physical laws precisely because it exploits irreversibility. This is an insight of extraordinary importance that Prigogine keeps consistently.
Error to reject: Reduction to open systems: Prigogine tends towards a problematic reduction: emergent creativity, the capacity of a form to generate novelty, is restricted to ‘systems far from equilibrium’ that dissipate energy in a controlled manner. This assumes there is equilibrium as a fundamental baseline state, as a natural situation toward which things tend. It assumes that open systems: those that continuously exchange energy and matter with the environment: are a rare exception, special cases. But this is the inverse of truth. There is truly no ‘equilibrium’ as a fundamental regime. Everything is always in a process of exchange, of dissipation. There is no truly closed system that can remain at rest. The very notion of equilibrium is an analytic idealisation, not ontological reality.
Necessary refusal: Hidden ontological presupposition: Prigogine maintains the premise that life and organisation are brilliant exceptions: special cases where the laws of thermodynamics work in a creative and sophisticated manner. Yet this reintroduces an element of hidden transcendence: as if there were something special, something that transcends the purely physical, when life manages to function in such a way. The radical truth that emerges from these structured and precise observations is this: none of these scales is more true, more fundamental, more real than the others in any absolute or privileged sense. Yes, electrons constitute atoms, atoms constitute molecules, molecules constitute organisms, organisms constitute ecosystems. But this is an assertion about mereological composition: about how parts compose a whole: not about truth or fundamental reality. The sub-atomic scale governs possibilities at the molecular level? Yes, indisputably: chemistry is a consequence of quantum physical laws. But the ecological scale governs the possibilities for individual organisms: the survival of an organism depends on the structure of the ecosystem that contains it. No scale is more governing in an absolute way. Each scale is operative and irreducible within its specific domain. The electron, in its femtosecond, is truly operative: it determines the available possibilities at the molecular level through its properties of indeterminacy and quantum tunnelling. The question: how do these multiple scales relate to one another? It is not a hierarchical relationship where the small scale is ‘more real’ because it is more fundamental. It is an interlocking relationship: operations at one scale create the operational context for the immediately larger scale, which in turn imposes constraints on operation at the smaller scale. The cell does not function despite continuous molecular reorganisation: it functions precisely because it depends essentially upon it. The organism grows and changes despite continual cellular death: growth is exactly a process of selective death and reorganisation. Population evolution occurs despite individuals dying: evolution is a process that emerges from death and birth.
No scale synchronises with the others in a pre-established harmony, no universal synchronisation would unite all times. There is only rest relative to a specific scale, only local stability that coexists with change elsewhere. The illusion of final rest: the point where everything fully stabilises and all reorganisations cease: is an illusion generated by fixation on a single temporal scale, by the observer’s choice to anchor themselves in a particular scale and to conceive that scale as the true reality. If I take only the human scale (decades) as reference, I may deceive myself into thinking the world is basically stable: the mountains remain in the same locations, cities remain built, customs remain relatively unchanged. Certain paths close (when a historically open door closes: for example, the end of a particular mode of production), but new ones open (unexpected circumstances create possibilities that did not exist before: for example, emergence of new technology). The total structure is continuous local reconfiguration without progress directed toward a pre-conceived target.
Rejecting the illusion of telos does not mean rejecting patterns or structures: that would be a symmetrical error. The bend is structured: it is neither raw chaos nor absolute indeterminism. There are regularities that recur at multiple scales (circadian rhythms that regulate biological activity according to the planet’s light/dark cycle, seasonal cycles that define periods of abundance and scarcity of resources, tissue regeneration cycles and nutrient recycling in ecosystems). There are symmetries that are preserved through transformations (energy conservation in isolated systems that allows impossibilities to be established: certain processes cannot occur because they would violate conservation, invariances of physical laws under Lorentz transformations that reveal a deep structure of space-time). There are material constraints that rigorously define what is possible (atomic structures allowed by the laws of quantum physics deeply limit which chemistry is possible, the fact that living organisms must dissipate entropy radically limits which metabolism is compatible with survival). But these regularities, symmetries and constraints do not point to a final destination, to an endpoint where everything rests in permanent form. They point instead to provisional compatibilities, to the continuous operation of constraints that create a structured space of possibilities (a space that is not infinite: there is a limit to what is possible: but which is also not unique: there is multiplicity within the possible), to perpetual reorganisation within limits that are themselves co-evolutionary and change as the system evolves.
The temporal bend reveals a complete insufficiency of three teleological narratives that have dominated modern Western thought and represent attempts to impose linearity on multiplicity. The first is the Hegelian narrative: history moves towards the progressive fulfilment of the concept, Reason expanding and self-comprehending through ever higher syntheses. This narrative presupposes a single direction, culminating in an absolute form of knowledge where Spirit fully comprehends itself, telos embedded in history as its inner meaning. The second is the Marxist narrative: modes of production succeed one another in necessary progression (primitive communism, slavery, feudalism, capitalism, final communism) until reaching communism where history would end because a mode of production without internal contradictions would be attained. This narrative assumes an inexorable internal logic, objective contradiction that necessarily resolves itself, a meta-material that is achieved when production is fully socialised. The third is the modern progressivist/cosmopolitan narrative: technique accumulates exponentially, humanity will transcend itself through evolution, artificial intelligence or genetic engineering. This presupposes a direction towards improvement, an ascending arc of history, a superior and emancipated future attainable through technical progress.
All three narratives, despite their profound differences and even overt antagonisms, share a common underlying structure that unites them: movement directed toward a goal or telos, resolution of tensions and contradictions in a higher synthesis or final form, culmination where history ends or its meaning is finally revealed and understood. All three are logically impossible if time is bent in the sense described here, if there are multiple temporal scales operating simultaneously without synchronisation, if contingency constitutes the real in its being. In a bend, there is no directed progression towards culmination as Hegel, Marx or progressives imagine: there is continuous reconfiguration in multiple directions simultaneously, some advancing and others receding at the same moment, contrary vectors that never resolve into a unifying synthesis. There are patterns that emerge from noise as recognisable structures for a time and then dissolve again when circumstances change. There are structures that become more complex by accumulating differentiation in a process, and then simplify when radical perturbation reforms them entirely. There are crisis periods where many things reorganise radically over a short span: political revolution, ecological collapse, physical phase transition: and there are relatively stable periods where changes accumulate slowly and seem imperceptible. But there is no global direction pointing to a greater and better future, no ultimate goal towards which history moves as if pulled by an invisible force, no point from which to rest in permanent repose and state of definitive completion.
Bergson (in his critique of spatialised becoming) had already seen that projecting history onto a spatial line was translating it into an order that did not belong to it. The temporal bend is more radical: it rejects not only linearity but also unidirectionality. Time is neither a line nor a circle: it is a more complex topological structure where multiple operations occur simultaneously at scales that do not touch.
The bend also reveals the deep reason why these teleological narratives have been so seductive over centuries: they offer almost irresistible metaphysical comfort. If history has direction and means something cosmic, then present suffering makes sense as necessary steps towards a better future, as sacrifices that will be justified when culmination arrives. If there is hidden telos, then individual life gains meaning that transcends personal smallness: it becomes part of a greater progress, a movement that matters cosmically. If culmination is inevitable, then we can rest knowing that what matters will be achieved regardless of our weak actions or mistakes. Rejection of teleology is therefore rejection of this extraordinary existential comfort. But comfort based on fundamental illusion about the structure of reality is comfort bought at the price of truth. It is a Faustian pun: selling one’s soul for metaphysical security.
2.3. Constitutive Contingency and Material Openness
If reorganisation never ceases, if there is no direction that governs and determines its course, if multiple temporal scales operate without synchronisation, then there is radical opening in the real: an opening that is not a failure of knowledge but ontological property. The future is not determined by the past through mechanical causality laws that would make each effect a necessary consequence of a previous cause. It is not determined by a hidden deep structure that would express its necessary effects as if everything were already written in the code of the real. The future is genuinely open: there is multiplicity of trajectories compatible with present conditions, and which will be actualised is not deducible from any amount of information about the past.
This opening is not epistemological: it does not belong to the domain of knowledge or ignorance. It is not that we cannot know the future because we have insufficient information, because complexity is too great, because there is an event horizon that prevents us from seeing. It is a fundamental ontological property of the real itself. The real is contingent: it is not necessary that it be exactly as it is at each moment. Reality could have been different. The sequence of events that occurred could have not occurred. No amount of perfect knowledge of the past: even divine knowledge if it were possible: would allow one to deduce with certainty which trajectory will be updated from a branching point where multiple continuations are possible.
Certain classic arguments attempted to deny this. In a fully determined universe: classical determinism of the type Laplace imagined: each future state would be deducible from the present state plus the laws. If we were to know completely the position and momentum of all particles in a region of the universe, and if we knew all the laws governing their interactions, it would be possible (in principle, though not in practice) to calculate the state of that system at any future moment. In this framework, contingency would be merely apparent: it would result from our ignorance, not a property of the real. The real would be fundamentally deterministic; we simply do not have access to complete knowledge.
But the contingency defended here is radically different. It is constitutive contingency of the real: reality is such that even with complete knowledge of everything observable, there is always multiplicity of possibilities compatible with governing constraints. This is not a statement about powers or limitations of human knowledge. It is a statement about the ontological structure of the real itself. The real has internal ‘freedom’, space where multiple different configurations can occur without violating any law that exists. It is not that laws are undefined or weak: it is that, being what they are, laws allow this space of plural possibilities.
It may seem that this contradicts the earlier assertion that real constraints operate. It does not. Constraints are real and genuinely restrict the possible. A molecule cannot violate thermodynamics. An organism cannot live without metabolism. A planet cannot orbit a star violating gravitation. But within the domain of possibilities compatible with constraints, there is genuine contingency: there remains freedom for multiple paths. Contingency is compatible with the existence of constraints: it is only in the presence of constraints that contingency means something different from ‘anything can happen’. Without constraints, there would be total arbitrariness. With constraints, there is structure: but a structure that allows multiple instances.
Consider examples that concretise this clearly. In an isolated physical system at a defined thermodynamic temperature, there is a vast set: typically astronomical in size: of microscopic states compatible with the observed macroscale. The macroscale is what we could measure on a sensitive scale: temperature, pressure, volume, chemical composition. Many different microscopic states (different specific arrangements of individual molecules, different velocities) produce the same macroscale. Which microscopic arrangement occurs at any given moment is contingent: it is not logically deducible from observable macroscopic properties. But it is not arbitrary: it is constrained by thermodynamic restrictions. The system may be in any one of multiple states compatible with its macroscopic constraints, but not in any imaginable state. There is structured space of possibilities.
In a biological population under environmental selective pressure, evolution can proceed in various directions compatible with that pressure. Natural selection dictates that only individuals with certain characteristics survive and reproduce: this heavily restricts the possible, eliminating incompatible evolutionary directions. But which mutation will appear at a specific moment, which genetic variation will be fixed by drift, which ecological niche will be explored by which population: these are contingent. Evolution is not a single predetermined path. Nor is it pure randomness where everything is equally probable: it is constrained by biology, ecology, selective pressures. The evolutionary history of life could have been different at countless points. If the asteroid had not struck Earth 66 million years ago, dinosaurs might have continued to dominate while mammals remained small. If another asteroid had struck, or if extinction events had not occurred, any different story was compatible with biological laws.
In a political institution confronting internal contradiction or crisis, it may reorganise itself in several different directions compatible with its foundational contradictions. Capitalism simultaneously generates an increasing accumulation of capital in the hands of few and a growing alienation of workers deprived of their product: there is an objective internal contradiction. This contradiction constrains future possibilities: capitalism cannot be indefinite with workers completely satisfied and fully integrated, nor can stability be eternal. But which specific form of the forthcoming transformation: revolutionary revolt, gradual reform, bureaucratic evolution: is contingent. There are multiple paths compatible with structural constraints. Which one will be actualised depends on political decisions, historical accidents, emergence of leaderships, diffusion of ideologies: none of this is deducible.
This constitutive contingency has a consequence that is radically liberating and at the same time vertiginous: nothing is predetermined, no future is guaranteed as the fulfilment of a pre-existing pattern, no history is already written into the code of things. The future is not merely unknown: it is genuinely indeterminate while multiple possibilities remain open. Yet no future is also a priori impossible: there is no fate that makes certain outcomes impossible. Everything depends on what happens, what choices are made, what circumstances emerge, what capacities are mobilised. This means that action has consequence and truly matters. Because the future is not determined, because there is material openness in reality, what we do now genuinely affects which of the multiple possibilities will be actualised. The agent is not merely a predestined spectator observing drama already written that only awaits its presentation. It is a genuine participant in a history whose conclusion is truly open, whose form still depends on operations yet to come.
Prigogine (in his theory of dissipative structures) showed that irreversibility is not merely a statistical property of the behaviour of many systems: it can be constitutive at the fundamental level of systems far from equilibrium. Life operates in this regime: it is because there is a continuous flow of energy that life becomes possible. A living system cannot reach thermodynamic equilibrium or would die. The contingency here is not ignorance: it is structure.
Simondon added that individuation (the process by which an individual entity emerges from a pre-individual field) has no guaranteed termination. The resolution that produces the individual is always provisional. The pre-individual tension persists. For this reason, every form is always at risk of re-individuating, of losing its definition. Form is not a permanently achieved state: it is a continuous operation.
Contingency also means that there is no ultimate security in anything, no permanent truth that lasts forever, no form that materialises eternity fixed in reality. What is stable now: the structures that appear immovable when observed at a particular scale: can fundamentally reorganise when new perturbations arrive. What appears invulnerable: powers that seem indestructible, empires that seemed eternal: can be transformed through mobilisation of different forces, through political creativity that finds vulnerabilities. What seemed indisputable truth for centuries: scientific truths that appeared foundational (Aristotelian physics, ether, Newtonian absolute space) or moral truths presented as eternally revealed: may prove deeply inadequate when closer observation or a different perspective examines it. This insecurity, this impossibility of permanent repose, is not a defect of reality or a flaw to be corrected through reform: it is a constitutive property of genuinely open reality, of a universe where nothing is eternalised, where everything is in perpetual transition.
2.4. Transition: Towards Practical Operation
The understanding that reorganisation never ceases, that multiple temporal scales operate simultaneously without universal synchronisation, that the future is genuinely open through constitutive contingency: this may at first sight appear paralysing or despair-generating. If coordinates change continuously, if there is perpetual motion at all scales, if there is no final resting point where we could rest knowing we have achieved permanent truth or form, why act? Why exert effort in a world without objective? Why not simply resign to drift, to passive acceptance that everything changes without significance?
This temptation of paralysis reproduces a foundational error inherited from long metaphysical tradition: it assumes that action is meaningful only if there is an immovable foundation upon which to lean, a safe and permanent arrival point that would validate the effort. This idea: that being true is being firm, immobile, timeless; that movement is a defect to be corrected: has dominated Western thought from Plato to Descartes to Hegel. The hierarchy is completely inverted: absolute rest would not be good or perfection: it would be death, inertia, cessation of operation.
The most significant human practices: those that work, prosper, solve real problems: already operate under a premise exactly opposite to that of traditional metaphysics. Medicine works knowing the body is in continuous reorganisation, that homeostasis is a dynamic process not a fixed state. It does not intend to restore and then freeze ‘healthy body’ as a permanent final state: that would be impossible, it would die. It works to maintain provisional dynamic compatibilities: keeping blood pressure within functional range through continuous regulation, keeping glucose within limits through hormonal secretion that adjusts at every moment, maintaining body temperature through continual dissipation or conservation of heat. Medicine is sophisticated management of continuous reorganisation. It does not intend to stop the flow of life: it follows and orchestrates its flow.
Technology works knowing that equipment degrades through use, that wear is inevitable not a design failure. It does not build machines for eternal duration: it recognises this as impossible: but builds them for a specific period of operation with planned maintenance. Technology that prospers recognises that use causes material wear, that parts need to be replaced periodically, that machines have a finite useful life. The most sophisticated engineering does not aim at eternity but at calibrated durability: knowing how long it will last, planning maintenance, designing for rest with ease. An aircraft is not built to fly forever: it is built with specifications of material fatigue cycles, scheduled inspections, component replacement. This attitude is not resignation: it is sophisticated realism.
Science works knowing that theories will be refuted and replaced, that no theory is a final truth that would remain valid eternally. Science that believed it had reached definitive truth: as Aristotle did about physics, as Newton did about mechanics: would cease to investigate because investigation would be unnecessary. Science that prospers recognises that every answer it obtains simultaneously opens new questions that were not suspected, that refutation is normal and productive, that progress does not mean asymptotic approach to eternal truth but continuous expansion of what can be asked. A robust scientific theory is one that performs its work well: makes predictions, coordinates observations, allows intervention: while simultaneously recognising its limits and awaiting refutation that will surpass it.
Politics works precisely because it can reorganise itself in response to circumstances that continuously emerge. Institutions that crystallise into dogma, that refuse adaptation, that believe they have achieved a final form and thus try to freeze themselves: those disintegrate when realities change. Institutions that renegotiate their commitments continually, that adjust policies in response to new data, that recognise contradictions and address them: those can survive and even prosper through changes.
The truth that emerges from looking at how human practices actually work: meaningful action does not require an immovable foundation or arrival at a permanent destination. It requires only a multiplicity of real possibilities and that action shifts what will be updated. Because the future is not determined, because there is genuine openness, action always matters and always has consequence. It matters because there is no self-fulfilling prophecy that would make our actions unnecessary. It matters because nobody can know in absolute advance which will be the consequence of an action taken: there is always room for genuine uncertainty. It matters because what I do now: which decisions I take, which efforts I mobilise, which alliances I build: truly contributes to which future among the multiple possibilities will be actualised.
This is a simultaneous liberation from two complementary and mutually reinforcing illusions. First illusion: there is a final goal, a perfect point of arrival that we can reach if we act correctly. If we manage to implement such an ideology, such a system, such a reform, we will finally have achieved a perfect society where contradictions will end. Second illusion (which arises as an unbridled reaction to the first): because there is no final goal, action is fundamentally useless, everything is vain, nothing matters. Both illusions are false. There is no final goal: that is established truth. But action is profoundly significant: that is also truth. These two truths do not contradict each other. Action is significant precisely because there is no guarantee of success, because there is real openness, because the future genuinely depends on what happens now, because each decision closes some possibilities and opens others.
A social movement that works for political transformation. It presumes that there is a final goal: perfect society, post-work, post-conflict, post-suffering: it risks serious dogmatism. When reality does not correspond to the idealised model of the goal, blame shifts to reality (reality is corrupt, unworthy) or to theory (our understanding was wrong, needs reworking). Both lead to paralysis: reality will never be perfect (because contingency is constitutive) so transformation is unnecessary, or theory is never correct (because falsification is always possible) so no action can be justified. This is the pattern that led revolutionary movements to dogmatism and paralysis.
But if one recognises there is no final goal, no end state for which society moves: any political order that is instituted will have its own internal contradictions requiring continuous renegotiation, any solution implemented will simultaneously open new unsuspected problems, no society will be eternally stable or permanently resolve fundamental antagonisms: it can act with intelligent flexibility and genuine creativity. It works for transformation that matters materially now: eliminating specific forms of oppression that cause real suffering, creating material conditions for the flourishing of human capacities, expanding material autonomy of expropriated populations: without a dogmatic illusory presumption that this will forever solve all humanity's problems. Action becomes clear in its immediate objectives, less paralyse by impossible and transcendental expectations, more responsive to emerging realities that emerge during the process itself. This is not a lesser or more limited commitment: it is a greater and more responsible commitment because it does not require change to resist eternally or prove to have been salvific, only that it matters now, reduces present suffering, opens possibilities that were closed.
This is liberation from the guilt imposed by teleological illusions. If you believe there is a final goal of salvation and work for it and it does not arrive: you are guilty of failing to realise the telos. If you recognise there is no telos, then the judgement changes: did you do your best given circumstances? Did you respond creatively to constraints? Did you expand the possible for others? This is an appropriate measure of responsibility.
This is the bridge to Part II of this Section and to the whole book. Part I of this Section established the absolute impossibility of rest: every stability we observe is transient relative to a specific temporal scale, no concept offers eternal truth, no political or natural form persists permanently. Because reorganisation does not cease on multiple scales that operate simultaneously without synchronisation, because the future is genuinely open through constitutive contingency that is not mere ignorance, because there is temporal folding without linearity or telos governing: we can now ask decisive questions: how do we live this concretely? How do we think, how do we act, how do we create meaning and dignity without hope of final rest, without a promise that salvation will come to solve all problems? How do we inhabit perpetual transitoriness not as resigned fatalism but as openness to genuine operation? How do we respond to contingency not with paralysis but with responsibility? Part II revisits these questions through life, the body, the practices that sustain human existence within this reality that does not rest, that does not end, that continues.

3. Reorganisation Without Telos
3.1. Against Existential Catastrophism
The non-cessation of reorganisation is not an existential burden: it is a structure that, paradoxically, makes genuine significance of all human action possible and places responsibility at the centre of life. This is the decisive thesis that structures this entire third section, and it must be blocked in its first move because the temptation of opposite interpretation is one of the most seductive and persistent genealogies of modern philosophical thought. When one fully comprehends that nothing is permanent, that every form is transient, that reorganisation continues indefinitely without a final point of rest, there is a long tradition of thinking that invites the desperate conclusion: if everything exhausts, if nothing persists genuinely, if there is no promise of eternal stability to seek, then why act? Why build anything? Why offer oneself to any project known already doomed to eventual collapse, radical transformation, inexorable dissolution? Why spend life on a work that will be devoured by time?
This temptation reproduces, in an inverted but perfectly symmetrical way, the fixist error that had been previously criticised. Fixism assumes that action is only significant if it has assurance of permanence: if what is built can rest eternally, if the achieved form can crystallise into immutable definitive security. Every action, in this view, seeks to leave a lasting mark that survives the agent, that persists beyond life, that grants the agent an immortality of work. It is the Platonic temptation: the belief that there are eternal Forms that do not change and that, if we could touch them, we would be touched by eternity. It is also the monument temptation: the idea that significant action builds something lasting centuries, transcending death, remaining when the body crumbles. Catastrophism likewise assumes that permanence is a necessary condition of significance: but it inverts the conclusion: it concludes that if there is no permanence, there is no genuine significance, only radical precariousness, absolute contingency, condemnation to continue despite the fundamental futility of effort. If nothing can be permanent, if everything is marked by future death, then all efforts are merely temporary postponement of inevitable collapse, every construction a simple desperate resistance against what will destroy us, every hope an illusion that the weak embrace to escape fundamental despair.
Both errors share the same mistaken presumption that structures the misunderstanding at its deepest level: that action is significant only when sustained by something that transcends it, something that would guarantee its value even after its own material extinction. The fixist seeks this transcendence in eternal permanence: the idea that if the form could last forever, the action that created it would have absolute timeless validity, the work would become an expression of fixed eternal truth, it would participate in the eternal domain of perfect Forms. It is the architectural dream: the building that would endure millennia, the institution that would be forever, the truth that would not change. The catastrophist seeks the same thing through inverted negation: if there can be no possible permanence, then at least there will be nobility in the struggle against the impossible, subjective dignity in conscious resistance to what inevitably crumbles. The solemnity of philosophical suffering: the idea that one who truly understands fundamental futility carries a special cross of knowledge, that it is more honourable because it admits the futility of hope, that it is more authentic because it rejects consolation from illusion: becomes symbolic compensation for lack of material permanence. It is Sisyphus embracing the rock and affirming that this is freedom.
Both positions are radically wrong because they share the same deep error: the presumption that significance depends on something external to the action itself, something that would come from outside, from a transcendental dimension escaping time and material contingency. Neither can think of significance as a property of the action itself, inscribed in its own material and real operation, not dependent on external validation, not requiring a foundation coming from some transcendent place.
Truth is radically different and far more simple, far more prosaic, far more solid than either of the two philosophical genealogies suggest. The significance of action does not arise from an external transcendental guarantee. It comes from a fundamental and absolute material fact: the reorganisation that occurs is constrained; it is neither chaotic nor randomly radical. The future is not predetermined in advance: this is true: but it is also not absolutely indeterminate, not pure random without structure, not chaos where no intervention would matter because there are no real material constraints to observe. The future is open within real constraints that operate: thermodynamic constraints limiting what is energetically possible, material constraints defining which configurations are stable versus transient, relational constraints governing how things can couple with one another: and it is this that makes all action absolutely significant, not despite its transitoriness but precisely because of it. Transitoriness does not eliminate significance: it renders it structurally necessary, irreducible.
If there were guaranteed permanence: if forms could effectively crystallise in fixed and immovable eternity: then action would be entirely useless. Why? Because nothing genuinely would change, no real difference would be made, no possibility of altering a structure already determined forever by some hand that had fixed it before, eternally and unalterably. Permanence would be death in life, absolute freezing, total and radical absence of genuine freedom. In a universe completely determined by eternity: where everything is already predetermined because it is fixed forever in its eternal form: there is no room for genuine action. There is no possibility of making a difference. The future would simply be reading a script written forever, interpreting a text whose letters were already eternally carved into the eternal rock. It is precisely the non-cessation of reorganisation that makes action truly alive, that makes each decision genuinely significant and irrevocable, that absolutely guarantees that the future is not predetermined and that there is real, material, operative space for human intervention.
This may appear to be only a small semantic inversion: a change of perspective that would not alter the fundamental objective facts. But it is a radical inversion of existential structure, a total reconfiguration of the relationship established with reality itself and with acting itself. It completely reorganises how one understands life, how one feels the body and responsibility. Consider yourself as a person who has been led to believe, through education or historical circumstance, that no significant change is really possible, that all action is futile because fundamental conditions never alter, that the universe is a closed predetermined mechanism where only details flow but the essence remains fixed forever. A person in this state of mind is completely paralysed: not by an external force that coaxes them physically, but by their own understanding of how reality works. They are not paralysed by visible currents: they are paralysed by the thought that currents are invisible and inevitable, that there is no possible breaking point because the structure is eternal. They understand (incorrectly, but coherently from their premise) that action does not matter materially, that any movement of theirs will be absorbed and neutralised by the fixed structure. The thinking goes thus: if nothing can alter the fundamental, why expend energy trying? Why reorganise myself, why learn, why transform my relationship with the world? The cost of acting is real (energy, attention, risk, potential suffering). The benefit is nil if nothing genuinely changes. Therefore, paralysis is rational given the presumption. The body enters a state of silent immobility.
Now consider yourself as a person who truly understands that every form is transient, that no configuration is terminal, that reorganisation is permanent and irreversible on both cosmic and personal scales. This person has two possible directions of reaction, two radically different paths: either they accept that this is fundamentally liberating, recognising that no situation is permanent and that there is always the possibility of genuine transformation, or they interpret it as existential ontological catastrophe, seeing transitoriness as a cosmic curse. Catastrophism chooses the second interpretation: it sees transitoriness as condemnation, perpetual reorganisation as continuous destruction that builds nothing lasting, non-permanence as an irrefutable sign that nothing truly matters. It is Schopenhauer’s voice saying that all will is vain, that life is suffering because it is marked by death. It is the voice of cosmic depression, Nietzsche in his earlier pessimism.
But this is merely interpretation: it is possible, it is internally coherent, but it is not a necessary logical consequence that should be derived from the truth about how reality works. The liberating interpretation, which is the only interpretation that accompanies the truth with real philosophical clarity, recognises that non-permanence is precisely the ontological condition that allows each action to be genuinely significant in total sense. Because form is not terminal, because the future is not written or predetermined, because reorganisation is always ongoing, present action matters absolutely and inevitably. It does not matter despite being temporary: it matters precisely because it is temporal, because what is done now reconfigures what will be afterwards, because there is no escape to some eternal where one could excuse the present by saying that nothing matters because everything eventually ends. The action that modifies the future is an action that matters materially. And the future that is not fixed is a future that can be modified by present choices, that can be altered by intervention, that is the responsibility of the agent who acts. This is genuine significance: it is promised by no one, it does not depend on external validation, it need not be justified from any transcendent or cosmological foundation. It simply emerges from the material fact that the future is unwritten, that there are real degrees of freedom in the system, that present decisions produce difference in the world’s future state.
This is the radical liberation offered: discovering that the impossibility of permanent rest is not an existential threat, it is a radical opening and structure for all genuine freedom. There is no transcendental refuge where one could eternally rest, safe in the knowledge that the work is complete, that life has been adequately lived and now can eternally rest in fulfilled and finished satisfaction, without further responsibility, without further need to act, in an immutable Heaven. That would be absolute imprisonment: medieval terror of eternal condemnation, being fixed in a form forever, with no possibility of reorganisation, no possibility of escape, no possibility of genuine change. Dante described this masterfully: souls trapped in eternal forms, condemned to eternally suffer the same punishment in the same unescapable form, on the same infernal rock, repeating the same gestures eternally. An eternity without change would be true death of life.
True life is exactly the opposite: it is continuous reorganisation, permanent change, structural incompleteness that always allows continuation, always to remake, always to reconfigure anew in response to what emerges. And this is not a special metaphysical suffering: it is a structure that guarantees genuine freedom, freedom that operates concretely, freedom that does not depend on any transcendental illusion. It is material freedom, inscribed in the fact that the future is open.
What is categorically and absolutely refused here is the existentialist drama that turns transiency into cosmic angst, the opening of the future into ontological terror, freedom into existential condemnation. This genealogy: which runs from Kierkegaard through Heidegger to Sartre and continues in much contemporary philosophy: transforms non-essentiality into fundamental curse, lack of transcendental foundation into vertiginous abyss that would swallow identity, responsibility into an unbearable weight that only a noble thinker could bear authentically. It makes the recognition of freedom an elevated suffering, a mark of philosophical depth. What is offered instead is far more sober and far more precisely true: reorganisation does not cease because that is how reality material operates operationally, point finished. It is not dramatic, it is not sublime, it is not invested with special existential value that would elevate it above banality. It is simply as things operate in the fundamental structure of reality. And recognising this clearly allows an action that is neither heroic nor grandiose, that does not seek tragedy as a mark of intellectual depth, that does not fill itself with existential solemnity, but is profoundly significant in its own ordinary everydayness.
It is not about discovering great transcendental meaning in action. It is not about investing the ordinary with special significance that would come from outside. It is about recognising that ordinary, mundane, practical action: deciding, building, reorganising, transforming: has real and irrefutable significance because the future is not predetermined, because what is done now genuinely matters in the course of events. When a mother educates a child, she does not educate with hope that this will be eternally valid, that the child will become forever exactly what was expected. But education matters: it reconfigures the child's neurological future, opens cognitive possibilities, closes others, leaves a mark that persists even when it is reorganised through puberty, adult life, different experience. When a community establishes a social norm, it does not expect it to be normative forever: but it matters because it governs present behaviours that shape immediate collective life, that defines what is possible in that situation. When one writes a book, one does not expect it to be eternal immutable truth never questioned: but it matters because it will be read, will be mentally reorganised by the reader who interprets it differently from what the author intended, will be transformed and continued by others who respond to it. Significance does not require permanence: it only requires genuine difference, that the future is modified by action, that reality is configured by intervention, that the agent has produced measurable difference in the course of events.
3.2. Two Regimes of Relation to Non-Ceasing
The non-cessation of reorganisation is not a condition that can be successfully avoided or denied: it is a universal ontological structure governing everything that exists in the real material at all scales, in all domains, inevitably. Yet there is an absolutely important empirical fact, verifiable at every historical, biological and institutional scale of observation, that cannot be ignored: there are regimes that recognise this non-cessation as a fundamental operative structure, that operate within it with practical intelligence and continuous adaptability, that actively process the excess that continually arises in it. And there are regimes that radically deny it, that try to resist reorganisation as if it were an external enemy to defeat, that aim to crystallise themselves against their own material nature.
The difference between these two types of regime is not moral: it does not lie in a field of values that could be judged as good versus bad in a transcendental sense. It is purely operative; it appears in observable functioning: one operates effectively by maintaining genuine resilience, the other eventually collapses, and this collapse is guaranteed by the structure. A regime that recognises the constraint of continuous reorganisation can work within it and thrive, can maintain structural flexibility that allows it to absorb perturbations. A regime that denies the constraint struggles against it until it inevitably breaks; it can only postpone the inevitable through increasing effort that eventually exhausts.
First regime: the regime that recognises the provisionality of all form. An institution that knows its rules are provisional, that lucidly accepts that change is necessary because the governing reality continually changes, that structurally incorporates reorganisation into its own functioning: can persist through decades or centuries, can adapt to new conditions without disintegrating, can produce genuine complexity that enriches over time. A historically documented example is the Catholic Church: an institution that has endured for two millennia not because it maintains fixed dogmas (dogma evolves, is reinterpreted, adapted), but because it possesses structures that allow the incorporation of change without completely disintegrating. There are processes for reinterpretation of doctrines (living theology that continues, not a dead doctrine), there is capacity to adopt new technologies (from the press to radio to the internet, incorporated rather than rejected), there are mechanisms of delegation and decentralisation that allow variety of local practices instead of rigid global uniformity. When it creates absolute resistance: when it tries to crystallise itself and refuses all change: it suffers deep schisms and crises (the Protestant Reformation as an example of rupture caused by rigidity). But when it can process reorganisation intelligently: when it accepts that faith must be reinterpreted for new generations with different problems: it can maintain vitality.
A language that knows its grammar is always being transformed by the living use of its speakers, that recognises that a truly alive language is one that continually changes because it responds to the needs of its present users: can renew itself, can integrate new meanings arising from contemporary experience, can remain vital across centuries and millennia of change. Medieval Portuguese that crystallised into a fixed form would not be comprehensible to a modern Portuguese speaker: but the language managed to renew itself because it accepted that grammar and vocabulary are not eternal laws inscribed in the nature of things. English has incorporated abundantly vocabulary from other languages (French, Latin, Germanic); this openness to continuous renewal allows it to remain spoken by billions of people in enormously diverse contexts. A language that tries to maintain purity: that refuses neologisms, resists the living dialect: becomes a museum piece, a dead artefact, without effective power.
An organism that recognises its metabolism is always generating excess that must be actively processed, that has evolved and sophisticated mechanisms to deal with this continuous excess: can survive environmental pressure, can evolve in response to continually changing environments. An immune system that recognises pathogens continuously evolve, that adapts through the production of varied antibodies in response to each new threat, that incorporates experience from each infection to respond better to the next: can defend a body over eighty years despite being exposed to millions of potential different pathogens. A body that tried to crystallise its immune defences (if it had only antibodies for the pathogen specific that attacked it in childhood) would be fatally vulnerable: any new pathogen would destroy it.
A thinker who knows his ideas will eventually be taken up by others, questioned, reorganised, superseded: can write in a way that leaves what he touched open, can offer not a crystallised doctrine but tools and operators for future thought to continue with genuine freedom, can contribute to an intellectual practice that continues beyond him and transcends him. When a philosopher (such as Spinoza) writes in a way that allows appropriation and radical reinterpretation in absolutely new contexts that Spinoza did not anticipate, the work remains alive: each generation can find within it new meanings unanticipated by the author. When a philosopher tries to crystallise (as certain orthodox Marxists who refuse any revision of Marx's original) the work dies: it becomes mechanical repetition, a dogma that cannot answer contemporary problems, a dead reference that is cited but does not function intellectually.
According to the regime: the regime that denies structural provisionality, which treats forms as if they were definitive and terminal. An institution that regards its rules as eternal truth inscribed in the nature of things, that refuses change as if it were merely a commitment to fundamental principles, that intends for the form that has crystallised to be the correct and unique form that should not be altered: can maintain an appearance of order for a limited time, but it is accumulating silent constraint, it is generating internal pressure that grows exponentially. The problems that do not fit within its rules, the situations it cannot process: become congested outside the system, accumulate as pressure that increases. Eventually: and this is empirically verifiable throughout human history: congestion reaches critical volume, the capacity of denial hits an insurmountable limit, and the institution enters acute crisis, suffers radical destabilisation, is forced to reorganise violently or simply collapses under its weight.
A language that normalises itself through official dictionary and grammar, that continuously rejects neologisms and dialectal variations produced organically by speakers: freezes the language in a dead form, an artefact of a museum preserved in alcohol. The living language progressively diverges from the formalised norm because the speaking community needs to speak alive. A dual language is produced: there is what is taught in academic Portuguese classes and there is what is actually spoken on the streets, in markets, in families, on social media. This fracture is not a secondary accident: it is a structural sign that the regime which denies reorganisation is expending all its power to maintain itself against its own material operation. The language ends up divided, educated speakers become alienated from the language they learned, there is loss of vitality on both sides.
An organism that attempts to resist its own continuous reorganisation, that vehemently denies that its metabolism generates excess that must be processed, that tries to maintain a fixed form against the inevitable dynamics of its own internal functioning: suffers progressive damage accumulation that perpetuates itself. Damaged proteins accumulate because there is insufficient apoptosis (old cells that should be eliminated persist, poisoning the tissue). Unprocessed waste intoxicates cells, creates chronic inflammation that corrodes. The apoptosis that should eliminate senescent cells is blocked by denial of the need for cell death. The result is premature senescence, early ageing, death before the biologically possible time, death that marks the failure to deny life.
A thinker who treats his own ideas as eternal truth that cannot be questioned without completely collapsing, who refuses to question himself because this would threaten the structure of his intellectual ego, who intends for his system to be closed and complete and not require revision: produces doctrine, not living thought. The doctrine can persist for some time through mechanical repetition, through application of rules without genuine understanding, through appeal to the authority of the founder. But it stops speaking to contemporary real experience. It becomes intellectually empty, ritualistic, without genuine effective power. Disciplines that recite the doctrine without comprehension cannot adapt it when the reality it describes changes.
The difference is pragmatic and empirically verifiable at all historical and biological scales, in all documentation. It is not a matter of philosophical opinion or relative personal preference. Regimes that work with the ontological structure of non-cessation can persist with real resilience and produce genuine complexity that enriches itself. Regimes that fight against this structure, that radically deny it, turn reorganisation into convulsion, into catastrophic collapse, into destruction. This is not speculative philosophical conclusion or theoretical extrapolation without empirical basis. It is an absolutely observable pattern in History, Biology, Sociology, Ecology, in every discipline where change is empirically evident.
Consider yourself an ecosystem that recognises it is permanently under real threat of destabilisation: from climate change, from unbalanced predation, from invasive species competition, from alteration of nutrient cycles. An ecosystem with structural resilience, with rapid response capacity to perturbations, with biological diversity that allows multiple alternative paths of reorganisation: can absorb significant disturbances without collapsing into total collapse. A tropical forest with hundreds of different species can remain stable even when one tree species disappears completely (others occupy the ecological niche, the system adapts). One that is rigid, that has few population-control predators, that maintains monoculture where rich diversity should exist, that treats its current form as the correct and unique form that should not be altered: is structurally fragile, vulnerable, ready to enter a cascade of destabilisation when conditions change radically. A monoculture plantation (only one variety of maize, for example) collapses instantly when a pest appears that attacks that specific variety: because there is no diversity to allow resilience, no alternatives when the single strategy fails.
3.3. Reorganisation as Positive Liberation
There is an entire and extensive genealogy of thought that sees transience as a profound ontological condemnation, the non-eternal non-being as a fundamental failure of human existence, matter as a prison from which the soul would like to escape and achieve radical complete transcendence. This genealogy traverses all of Platonism: the idea that the material world is an imperfect shadow of eternal Forms hovering in an immutable transcendent Realm. It passes through Neoplatonism, Christian theology that rejects the material world in favour of eternal Heaven, rationalist metaphysics that attempt to reach timeless essences that do not change. Its preaching is that material life is fundamentally imperfect, that true perfection must lie in another dimension, that escape is possible for those who can transcend the limited and mortal material. The body is prison: this is a recurring message across centuries, across cultures, from Greek antiquity to contemporary times. The soul would be 'better' if it were not imprisoned in this temporary flesh, this matter that ages and dies, this flesh condemned to degradation. The body is what binds us to the temporal, what prevents us from attaining eternal truth. And this diagram of material condemnation is so persistent that it has crossed almost all great religiosity and philosophical systems: reappearing in mutable but recognisable forms continuously throughout intellectual history.
But this is an illusion generated by a total inversion of truth: it is presumed that permanence would be the supreme good, that eternity would be absolute salvation, that if we could remain fixed in a perfect form this would be genuine liberation. But this is precisely the radical opposite of truth. An eternally fixed form would be absolute imprisonment beyond any possible description. To be trapped in an eternally perfect form would be infinite condemnation with no escape. It would be impossibility of change, of transformation, of escape, of new genuine possibility. An existence that could no longer reorganise itself would be true death: not immediate physical death, but complete operative death, cessation of genuine life. Life is continuous reorganisation. Life is permanent change. Life is structural incompleteness that always allows continuation, always re-creation, always opening to new genuineness. And this is not a cosmic curse: it is liberation in absolute sense, the radical opposite of the prison described by tradition.
Let us consider with extreme care what it would truly mean to be trapped in an eternal and immutable form. The Platonist who longs to attain the eternal Forms, who imagines that there one could rest in immutable truth, completely ignores the ontological horror of this assumption. If someone were to actually reach an Eternal Form: say, the Form of Justice, the Form of Beauty, the Form of Good: they would be condemned to remain permanently fixed in that form of being, forever, with no possibility of change, no possibility of evolving or transforming themselves. It would be like being frozen in a crystal block, conscious of one's own immobility yet unable to move, seeing all other things in the material world transform while one remains crystallised in empty eternity. What kind of heaven is this? What liberation is this? This is pure hell described as heaven, eternal prison described as transcendent salvation. The medieval thinker who imagines being able to rest eternally in God's arms in a fixed and eternal form does not understand that this would be complete intellectual and existential death: it would be impossibility of thinking new thoughts, impossibility of feeling new feelings, impossibility of being affected by anything new. It would be death in absolute life.
Let us consider the structure of this illusion more carefully. Traditional thought that sees transience as condemnation assumes a hierarchy: there is a real perfect and eternal (Heaven, the Forms, God) and there is a degradation of that reality over time (the material world). The temporal is always seen as descent, as failure, as relative incompleteness to the eternal. The body sits below the soul in this hierarchy because it is material, temporal, because it ages. But this hierarchy is entirely an illusion. There is no degradation: there is only difference. Transience is not a failure of permanence; it is a distinct property of reality. Incompleteness is not lack of perfection; it is a structure that allows genuine operation. Life that constantly changes is not inferior to life that would be fixed: it would be impossibility of life at all, crystallisation equivalent to immediate death.
Bergson attempted to recover duration as a fundamental philosophical concept, rejecting the way analytical reason fragmented it into static and timeless instants. He refused however to universalise this truth: he kept duration as a special property of lived experience, of consciousness that experiences time differently from calculating reason which could capture it. This meant re-introduction of hierarchy even while refusing another: there would be true duration (property of the lived) and false time (construction of reason). But the fundamental structure Bergson diagnosed: that change is real and irreducible, that instants are not isolated, that reality is a continuous flow where each moment emerges from the previous while transforming it: this structure is universal, not privileged to the domain of consciousness. It applies equally to stars that are born and die, to atoms that reorganise into infinite combinations, to molecules that continuously bind and unbind in chemical reactions, to living systems that process energy permanently. There is no fundamental difference between time passing in human consciousness and time passing in radioactive decay or galaxy formation. All is under the same structure of permanent incompleteness, continuous change, impossibility of terminal rest. And this does not require special intuition to understand: it requires only clarity of thought about what it really means to be under a regime of permanent reorganisation. Duration is universal because non-cessation is universal. There is no domain of reality where change ceases, where something could remain eternally fixed and immutable.
Non-cessation is liberating precisely because it radically denies the possibility of any form becoming an eternal prison. If reorganisation continues indefinitely, if no configuration is terminal, if no state can crystallise and remain frozen forever, then there is no form in which one could be permanently trapped. There is no essence that could condemn one to immutable eternity. There is no ultimate truth that could end thought in permanent dogma. Because everything keeps reorganising itself, there is always genuine openness, always a real possibility of escape, always a chance for radical transformation. The reorganisation that denies the permanence of any form is also the structural guarantee that no form becomes an inescapable prison. This is liberation that is not promised by anyone, that does not depend on divine grace or transcendent intervention, that is guaranteed only by the ontological structure of real material. It is immanent liberation.
A child born into an oppressive family may appear condemned: the familiar form fixed around them seems to be their sole truth, seems to define forever who they are and will be. But because life continues, because reorganisation is permanent, the child can grow up, leave home, transform into an adult no longer imprisoned in the familial pattern that shaped them. The form that seemed fixed: the family dynamic, the expected roles, the narratives about what one is: collapses when the child is no longer present. The child is liberated not by the will of a transcendent redeemer, but by the structure of life that continues, that always opens again.
A person who suffers profound depression: trapped in an existence form that seems to be perpetual condemnation, who cannot imagine change, who feels darkness as eternal: can, through continuous reorganisation (therapy that reorganises narratives, environmental change that offers new constraints, neural reorganisation through new learning, friendships that reorganise what is possible to think), get out of that depressive state. The form was not an eternal prison: it was a transitional form that continued only because it was continually reaffirmed, because the body intoxicated by pessimistic biochemistry could not imagine escape. When one stops reaffirming, it collapses. When reorganisation is processed actively, the person discovers that the form was provisional and now other forms can be.
An oppressive society: a dictatorship that seems to be permanently consolidated, that offers an appearance of perpetual invincibility, that promises to last forever: will eventually collapse not because liberation is guaranteed by some superior progressive essence, but because no form can remain intact indefinitely. Reorganisation is continuous. Young generations think differently, have problems that old structures cannot process. Technologies change and bring new possibilities of communication, coordination, resistance that the dictatorship did not anticipate. The system that seemed immovable proves to be transitional. This is not a magical promise of redemption: it is merely an acknowledgement that no form is terminal, that every structure that crystallises is already generating the conditions for its own reorganisation, inevitably. Permanence is an illusion, not the transient. The historian who studies ancient power structures that seemed unimaginably solid to their contemporaries: the Roman Empire which lasted centuries but which Romans believed would last eternally: can clearly see that all of them were provisional, that all of them generated from within themselves the forces that would reorganise them. When seen from historical distance, change is obvious. What we cannot see in the present is only because we are too close, because the scale of change exceeds our immediate vision. Berlin in 1989 still had its wall that seemed unshakeable, that represented a division that would last eternally, that was the solid truth of the European world: one year later the wall had disappeared, the structures that supported it collapsed, reality reorganised radically towards a direction no one could have fully predicted.
It is in this liberation from fixist illusion: in the full clarity that non-cessation is not condemnation but maximum liberation: that genuine responsibility emerges. Responsibility is not a burden imposed from outside, imposed by the universe or by divinity or by some transcendental moral law. Responsibility arises precisely from the recognition that everything is in Travessia, that no form is terminal, that the future is unwritten, that my actions genuinely alter what comes after, that there is no escape to an eternity where negligence or cowardice in the present could be excused. If the future were predetermined, if it were fixed eternally in some eternal Truth, then my action would be irrelevant, useless, without genuine impact. But because the future is open, because reorganisation is continuous, because no form can withstand the constraint of new emergence, my action matters absolutely. This is not a special existential grandeur: it is simply how real material operates operationally. Responsibility flows from this fundamental structure: if I make a genuine difference in the course of events (and I do, because the future is not predetermined), then I am responsible for the consequences of what I do, responsible not only before law or conventional morality, but responsible before the material structure of reality that will continue after my death and that will be altered by my present interventions. This is genuine liberation: not liberation from responsibility, but liberation to genuine responsibility that is absolute and irrefutable precisely because non-cessation makes every action meaningful.
3.4. Closure: The Crossing as Permanent Structure
The first part of this passage established three fundamental operators that work together inseparably: (1) the impossibility that any form survives intact indefinitely, that all stability is transient, that there is a constraint of perpetual reorganisation: this was the foundation of the first analysis (transiency of form) and developed through the analysis of excess as an irrefutable motor that every material operation generates; (2) the impossibility that no concept survives intact when it investigates reality, that thought which continues cannot be crystallised: this was the central operator of the second analysis (provisional concept), showing that the permanent friction between conceptual form and the reality it attempts to capture requires reorganisation of all thought; (3) the impossibility that any configuration escapes continuous reorganisation: this is the synthesis of the present analysis (continuous reorganisation), showing that non-cessation is not an existential burden but a condition for every genuine freedom and meaningful action.
These three operators function in a deep unity that deserves to be called: not as a closed system that could be closed in a definitive formula, but as an operational structure that allows us to see how reality works when we accept without resistance that nothing is terminal. The first operator (changing form) is pure material reality: every material configuration generates excess that demands continuous reorganisation, no form can remain absolutely identical because the metabolism of that form, the thermodynamics of its operation, the energetic constraint that traverses it ensures that change is permanent. The second operator (changing thought) is a direct consequence of the first: thought that attempts to capture reality is itself subject to the same constraint, is always finding friction between its conceptual forms and the reality it pursues, is condemned to reorganisation if it wishes to maintain any fidelity to the real. The third operator (everything is under reorganisation) is the synthesis that dissolves the artificial separation between the two previous: there is no special domain of rest where anything could be fixed while the rest continues to change. Rest is always provisional, equilibrium is always dynamic, stability is always meta-stability.
This deep articulation of the three operators allows us to understand why non-cessation of reorganisation is not an existential threat but a foundation of genuine possibility. If there were permanent rest at any level: if some form could crystallise definitively, if some truth could be achieved completely and never need to be revised again, if some final state could be reached where everything would be resolved: then that rest would be death, freezing, impossibility of genuine freedom. It would be imprisonment in a fixed form, it would be eternal slavery in a single configuration, it would be the end of true life. But because reorganisation continues indefinitely, because no form can be terminal, because change is guaranteed by the very structure of material reality, there is always genuine openness, always possibility of transformation, always chance to be affected by the new and to respond differently. The Passage is precisely this impossibility of rest that becomes liberation when we stop trying to resist it and begin to work with it intelligently.
The recognition of this deep unity of the three operators allows the thinker a final liberation from a burden that had bound him since his origin: the burden of saying the last word, of reaching definitive conclusion, of establishing fixed truth that would not require subsequent revision. This burden is an illusion: it is not a genuine requirement that material reality places. It is only pressure transmitted through centuries of Platonic thought which imagined that there was Eternal Truth to reach, medieval thought which imagined that there was God whose word was final and irrevocable, modern thought which imagined that there was Universal Reason that would be able to capture everything completely. But if form changes, if thought changes, if everything is under continuous reorganisation: then the last word is a phantom that does not exist. There is no last word. There are only words that echo, that modify what comes after, that are retaken and reorganised by other voices that understand them differently. The philosopher who recognises this stops seeking to be the mouthpiece of Eternal Truth and begins to be merely a thinker who offers operators to future thought, who contributes to an intellectual practice that will continue without him and transcend him, who writes in such a way as to leave open what he touched instead of claiming to have closed it definitively. This intellectual liberation is radical: it frees thought from the pretence of totalisation, from the ambition of a closed system, from the hope of a final synthesis that would end everything.
Likewise, recognising this structure liberates the agent from tyranny by the requirement to do the thing correctly definitively, to establish an institution that would last eternally, to create order that would never need to be reorganised because it would have been perfect from the outset. The burden of permanent perfection is what often paralyses those who wish to act responsibly: the person who does not act because any action seems incomplete, because they feel they cannot do it perfectly, because they fear the unwanted consequences that every imperfectly known action will inevitably have. But if reorganisation is permanent, then no action needs to be perfect: it only needs to be responsible, it only needs to be carried out with the intelligence possible at that moment with the knowledge available at that time, it only needs to leave open what it has done so that it can be retaken and reorganised by those who come after. Meaningful action is not perfect action: it is action that genuinely modifies the structure of possibilities, that makes certain futures possible and others impossible, that leaves a mark that persists even when it is retaken and transformed by other interventions.
This is the Crossing that gives its name to this crossing: it is not a linear journey that reaches a predetermined destination, it is not movement that has a clear beginning and an absolute end; it is a continuous process of reorganisation where forms succeed one another without ever reaching rest or final synthesis. The Crossing is relentless. Movement continues. The fold recycles itself indefinitely. The word travessia is chosen deliberately because it suggests motion: but it is motion that does not terminate, that does not reach a safe harbour where one could rest forever. A real crossing is one that continues even after what was sought has been reached, that reorganises and opens new fronts when one thought it had been completed, that never offers final rest but only provisional rest before the next reorganisation. Life lived genuinely is continuous Crossing: it is motion that does not close in itself, a process that does not end, a structure that guarantees permanence through radical transformation.

Philosophy folds: each fold aligns partially with the others, but none fully overlaps. There are echoes that return, there are transformations that radically reorganise, there is continuity that is not identity. The structure is polyrhythmic: multiple times of thought operating simultaneously, multiple modes of understanding functioning in parallel without a final synthesis that would unify them. This is polytemporality: neither linear nor synchronised, but a permanent counterpoint. It is also the mark of genuine Crossing: which does not progress in a straight line to ultimate truth, but folds upon itself, recycles what has been done, integrates retroactive critique, reformulates operators in light of new perturbations, remains always open to reorganisation.
This Crossing that is offered here is an ontological regime: a mode of existence that characterises everything that does not cease to reorganise itself, everything that is permanently structurally incomplete. It is no privilege of particular beings or special domains: it is a universal structure that permeates all that is materially real. The stone is in permanent molecular reorganisation even if it occurs on a timescale very slow for immediate human perception. The living body is in permanent metabolism, neural reorganisation, reconstruction of cells and tissues. Thought is in permanent friction with the real that undermines its forms. History is in permanent institutional reorganisation, transformation of values, reconfiguration of possibilities. Recognising this wholly frees thought and action from various burdens that had imprisoned them: the burden of saying the last word; the burden of reaching ultimate truth that does not change; the burden of establishing a transcendental foundation that would come from beyond the material; the burden of doing the thing correctly perfectly so that reorganisation would never be needed again. None of these burdens is real. None is a genuine requirement that the real material places. All emerged from a fixist illusion that pursued philosophical thought through the centuries.
The Crossing that is offered here is the permanent structure of what it means to live genuinely, what it means to think truly, what it means to act significantly in a world without transcendental guarantees or external foundations that would come from beyond the material. It is an ontological regime: a mode of existence that characterises everything that does not cease to reorganise itself, everything that is permanently structurally incomplete. And recognising this wholly frees thought from various burdens that had imprisoned it: the burden of saying the last word (which presupposes there is a point where everything would finally be resolved and discourse could stop definitively); the burden of reaching ultimate truth (which presupposes there is a truth that does not change, that is fixed eternally); the burden of establishing a transcendental foundation (which presupposes something beyond the material that would sustain everything). None of these burdens is real. None is a genuine requirement that the real material would impose. All emerged from a fixist illusion that pursued philosophical thought through the centuries.
The reader who entered this crossing in search of conclusive answers may leave disappointed: because there are no such answers to be offered. There is no synthesis that concludes, no demonstration that would end thought. Only operators allow one to understand how reality works, how thought can respond to it without claiming to exhaust it. But the reader who understands the deep structure of the Crossing also knows that this type of disappointment is liberating truth. It is a genuine opening for thought that truly engages with the real without illusion. Because if there were conclusive answers that could be given entirely, then thought would have finished: and the reader who receives the answer would be condemned to repeat it mechanically, unable to reorganise itself in response to new problems that emerge, to new situations that inherited thought cannot process. The reader who finishes this crossing without definitive answers is truly free: free to continue thinking genuinely, to reorganise, to respond to problems that have not yet arisen, to remain intellectually alive.

Philosophy does not end: it folds. And in the fold that does not close upon itself, thought can remain alive because it recognises that its own impossibility of rest is exactly the condition that makes it live.
This aphorism summarises the entirety of Part I which has just concluded. The thought that truly persists is that which learned not to seek the impossible conclusion, to work with structural incompleteness as a productive operator, to recognise that permanent reorganisation is not an existential threat but the foundation of all genuine freedom and meaningful action. In Part II that follows, this will be developed in a new context: the analysis of how this regime of permanent organisation functions specifically within the domain of concepts that attempt to capture material reality which itself is permanently undergoing reorganisation.
