1. Distance Prior to Dimension

1.1. Space as Stage: Genealogy of the Container

The history of thought concerning space is the history of how a symbolic fiction, the fiction of a prior container, acquired the status of ontological reality. This fiction is no accident of the history of ideas. It is the consequence of a profound inscriptive need. The symbolic regime demands a stage to organise its records. The question regarding the origin of this presupposition is, therefore, also a question regarding how the inscriptive regime projects its own conditions upon that which it describes.

Isaac Newton confronted a practical and philosophical problem simultaneously. The Principia Mathematica required a foundation for the universality of the laws of motion. Kepler had described planetary orbits; Galileo had described falling bodies; Huygens had described pendular motion. How was it possible for the selfsame law of acceleration to operate across such diverse contexts, an apple falling in an orchard at Woolsthorpe, the Moon orbiting the Earth, Mars gliding around the Sun, were there no single, immutable frame of reference conferring universal meaning upon the terms "horizontal", "vertical", "rest", "motion"? Newton responded by positing absolute space: an independent, immutable, infinite, homogeneous reality, prior to any material body. Newtonian space was no metaphor for a stage. It was an effective stage, with positive ontological properties. In a 1693 letter, Newton wrote that space was the "sensorium Dei", the organ through which God perceived all things. The inscriptive need, the demand for a fixed frame of reference for mathematical laws to hold validity, was transmuted into a metaphysical thesis: space is an entity prior to matter. The gain was immense: two centuries of modern science, technology, navigation, astronomy were founded upon this presupposition. The ontological cost, however, was equally immense. Reality gained a fundamental duality. There was not merely matter in motion; there was matter in motion inside space. Space acquired the status of an entity, a thing among things, albeit non-material. And distance, that material conformity two bodies succeed in sustaining when separated, became the reading of a neutral interval, a property of an indifferent container.

Gottfried Leibniz perceived the problem and refused the solution. In an epistolary debate with Samuel Clarke, a Newtonian defender, Leibniz argued that attributing to space a reality independent of matter violates the Principle of Sufficient Reason. Were space a substantial entity, it would be conceivable for the universe to occupy a distinct "position" in space, a universe shifted a few trillion kilometres west, with all its internal constitution preserved. Nothing within the universe would change; the entire configuration of bodies would remain identical. Yet, for what sufficient reason would the universe be in that position and not another? The Newtonian answer, "because God placed it there", breached the Principle. For Leibniz, space was no independent entity; it was ordo coexistentiae, the order of how things coexist. Space is a system of relations. Two bodies are near not because they exist within a space interval joining them; they are near because their material relation constitutes that which we designate as proximity. Extraordinary gain: Leibniz eliminated ontological duality, refusing that reality contained subtle, undetectable entities like absolute space. However, the cost was as profound as the gain. If space is relation, what sustains the relation? Leibniz responded with the doctrine of pre-established harmony: monads do not interact causally; a prior harmony exists making changes in one monad correspond to changes in others. The mechanism of relation remained obscure, metaphysical, suspended in divine intention. Relation was real, yet the reality of relation lacked a physical mechanism.

Immanuel Kant shifted the entire question. He asked not "is space an entity or a relation?", he asked "for whom does space exist?" Space is no property of things in themselves, nor a system of relations between things in themselves; it is an a priori form of human sensibility. The subject does not know space in-itself; he knows it as a structure through which he organises sensory multiplicity. Euclidean geometry, therefore, is no truth regarding cosmic space; it is an invariant of transcendental subjectivity. Gain: Kant resolved the tension between mathematical necessity (Euclidean geometry must be true, under pain of incoherence) and empirical world contingency (the world could have been different). The answer: necessity is transcendental, not cosmic. However, the cost emerged rapidly. In the nineteenth century, mathematicians such as Carl Friedrich Gauss, János Bolyai, Nikolai Lobachevsky, and Bernhard Riemann demonstrated that non-Euclidean geometries, where Euclid's axioms failed to apply, were logically coherent. Were Euclidean geometry truly an a priori form of human sensibility, how could the human intellect conceive other geometries? The Kantian answer entered crisis. The thesis that Euclidean space is transcendentally necessary collapsed before the history of mathematics itself. Bernhard Riemann led the question to a more radical generalisation: the geometry of a space can be determined intrinsically, without reference to any surrounding space. Curvature does not depend upon how space is immersed in a superior container; it can be calculated from internal relations among its points. Gauss even attempted to measure empirically whether physical space was Euclidean, performing measurements of triangles formed by mountains in Lower Saxony, were space Euclidean, the sum of angles should equal exactly 180 degrees. Measurements were inconclusive, yet the gesture was revealing: geometry became an empirical question, not a necessary truth. Were geometry contingent, could it be Euclidean or not, then the structure of space was no fixed transcendental condition. It could change. It could depend upon matter.

Hermann Minkowski, in 1908, unified space and time into a single metric structure. The interval between two events, separation not only in space, but also in time, ceased to be absolute. Two observers in relative motion would measure distinct spatial and temporal intervals, although the combined interval remained invariant. The decomposition into space and time is relative to the state of motion. The absolute separation between space and time, intact from Parmenides to Kant, dissolved.

Albert Einstein dissolved the structure of the debate. He did not answer the question "is space an entity, relation, or form of subjectivity?" because he demonstrated that the question rests upon a false presupposition: that there is something called the "nature of space" existing prior to the description of matter. General Relativity establishes that space-time is no stage where matter acts. It is a dynamic field whose geometry is determined by the local distribution of mass-energy. Mass-energy curves space-time; space-time curvature determines geodetic paths along which mass-energy moves. There is mutual co-determination without logical precedence. "Where" is no property independent of matter; it is the consequence of material configuration. The conceptual revolution was complete: the field equations, $G_{\mu\nu} = 8\pi T_{\mu\nu}$, establish this relation such that the curvature tensor (left side) is proportional to the energy-momentum tensor (right side). There is no linear causality, mass-energy and curvature are two aspects of a singular phenomenon. A body in free fall follows a geodesic, a straight path in curved geometry. What appears as "attraction" is geodetic convergence. Genealogy closes here: Newton required an absolute foundation for law invariance to make sense; Leibniz refuted the existence of such a foundation, yet remained metaphysical; Kant relocated necessity to subjectivity, yet geometry's history contradicted his thesis; Einstein showed there is no legitimate question concerning the "nature of space" separable from the question of how matter reorganises. The container reveals itself as a retroactive illusion of the inscriptive regime, not a property of the real.

1.2. Distance as Material Relation

Stating that "distance is relation" is no trivial or merely linguistic claim. It signifies more than "distance depends causally upon things" or "distance is instrumental, constructed by measurement." It signifies that distance constitutes the interval in an ontologically primary manner. The effective separation between two material configurations is no inert void filled and measured within a larger extension. It is itself a mode of material difference, a mode of relation sustaining itself as such. Distance is primary relative to dimension. Geometric dimension, the structure of multiple organised directions, the x, y, z axes, the metric tensor, arises when a multiplicity of distances can be coordinated into a regular system. When separations between multiple pairs of points acquire pattern, reciprocal proportionality, they permit uniform calculation and transition between distinct directions. However, distance as such, the pure relation of separation, logically precedes this geometric regulation regime. When merely two sites differ, there is already distance between them. There is no dimension, no coordinates, no axes. Merely separation. Dimension emerges subsequently, when an organised system of multiple distances is introduced, establishing order, direction, proportionality.

Three questions arise immediately demanding answers. First: what is distance without dimension? It is not "distance prior to any measurement", which would be trivially unknowable. It concerns distance as a real condition rendering any measurement possible. Two differing material configurations sustain their difference, neither collapses into the other, neither becomes indistinguishable from the other. This non-absorption is distance. There is no "empty interval" between them lacking properties; there is the persistence of difference as relation. Direction, magnitude, axes, are modes by which the inscriptive regime captures this persistence. They are real as applied to the concrete (the measured, quantified), yet do not constitute distance at the level of the real. A temperature gradient between two regions possesses distance (regions differ and maintain difference) before any thermometer introduces a scale. The scale renders difference legible; it does not create it.

Second: why is dimension not equally primary? Because dimension is a coordination structure, requiring an articulated system of multiple distances. An isolated distance possesses no direction (direction demands at least two non-parallel distances). An isolated distance possesses no magnitude (magnitude demands a unit, which is a ratio between distances). Dimension is the coordination regime; distance is that which is coordinated. This is no temporal priority (first distance, then dimension), it is logical priority. Every dimensional framework presupposes the distances it organises; no distance presupposes the dimensional framework capturing it.

Third: how does this position differ from classical metaphysical relationism, the thesis of "relations without relata"? The classical problem arises when conceiving relations as logically secondary to the terms they join: if terms vanish, relation should vanish too. However, the thesis here is not "relations without relata." It is that the relata themselves are configurations of relations. A material configuration is no substance subsequently entering spatial relation, it is already a pattern of material differences, relational from the outset. Distance is no relation between pre-given atoms; it is the mode of difference whereby configurations sustain their distinction. There is no level reaching non-relational "things" that relations would join. Mass-energy and geometry co-determination expresses precisely this: there is no matter prior to space nor space prior to matter, there are material differences sustaining themselves as relation.

Importantly, this position must be distinguished from another with which it might be confused: Cartesian identification of matter with extension. For Descartes, to be material is to be extended, extension is matter's essence, what matter is in itself. This chapter's position retains inseparability (matter and space do not uncouple); it inverts, however, the direction of determination. In Descartes, extension is primary and determines what matter can be, matter is res extensa, a substance whose nature is to be extended. Here, material differences are primary and determine what space can be, space is the relational unfolding of differences, not a substance attribute. Divergence has three faces: Cartesian extension is homogeneous (every res extensa part possesses identical nature), relational distance is heterogeneous (every region possesses proper metric); extension is continuous and infinitely divisible as a substance property, distance is possibly discrete at fundamental scale; extension is essence (defining what matter is), distance is relation (defining how differences sustain themselves). Confusing both positions would eliminate what the thesis founds anew: that space is no property of matter, but a mode of material differences articulation, a mode changing as differences reconfigure.

A second demarcation imposes itself, this time with phenomenological tradition. Heidegger, in Being and Time (1927), likewise refused space as container. His analysis of Räumlichkeit, spatiality, shows space is no neutral datum in which subject finds itself: constituted by how Dasein orientates, approaches, organises proximity and distance in function of practical projects. Heideggerian distance is no geometric interval, it is Ent-fernung, "de-distancing", active distance suppression by practical engagement. Gain is real and retained: spatiality is no prior frame, it is constituted. However, divergence is equally profound, having three faces. First: Heideggerian spatiality is constitutively dependent upon Dasein, without projecting entity, no space. In the pre-symbolic regime, no Dasein, project, or practical orientation exists; material differences sustain relations independently of any entity experiencing or comprehending them. Second: Räumlichkeit is always already meaningful, space articulates in function of a involvement totality (hammer refers to nail, referring to work). In the material real prior to inscription, no significance, no reference exists, constraints, gradients, conformities exist. Third: Heidegger never extended analysis to cosmology. Attempting it produces contradiction: early space prior to life is "inauthentic" (category making sense only for Dasein), or not space at all, denying the material reality of 13.8 billion years of spatial differences without a subject. This chapter's thesis retains container critique; grounds, however, spatiality in material differences, not in modes of being of a comprehending entity. Space as material relation is prior to and independent of any Räumlichkeit.

The established terminological discipline applies here with precision: geometric dimension belongs to the symbolic regime, to theory, it is an operator of the inscriptive level. Distance belongs to material relation, to the real, it is a mode of difference prior to any representation regime. This distinction is no mere conceptual artifice. It is an operative separation between that which can be captured in inscription and that which all inscription presupposes. Distance is that which inscription renders legible, yet it is not inscription. It is the real forcing inscription to be distance, to possess extension, to offer a capturable interval. When stating "the distance between A and B is 5 metres," three ontological levels superimpose and distinguish without confusion. At the level of the real, prior to any inscription, there is material difference maintaining itself as effective separation. Two differing configurations maintain themselves in that difference; no collapse into indifference; no absorption of one into the other. Pure material relation, unceasing conformity, unresolved tension. Un-capturable in image or concept, it is that which every image and concept presuppose. Inaccessible to inscription not through being transcendent or mysterious, but because it is the condition of access: without real distance, without material difference sustaining itself, no inscription would be possible. At the level of the concrete, the real rendered legible, inscriptible, this material difference is translated into a signal that the inscription regime can fix. Established metric, standardised unit (metre), proportionality rendering separation quantifiable, communicable from one observer to another, storable in instrument. The concrete is always symbolic, resting upon convention, shared inscriptive regime. Yet it is symbolic referring to the real; capture bringing real aspect to legibility. At the level of theory, pure symbolic reorganisation, legible captures (measurement, number, unit) are recoded into conceptual structure. Traditional Euclidean geometry, quantum mechanics Hilbert spaces, General Relativity metric tensor, differential topology abstract tangent space. Each level is ontologically necessary; none can be reduced to prior or subsequent levels. Real without concrete remains mute. Concrete without real would be empty symbolic capture, language games lacking foundation. Theory without concrete would be pure speculation. General Relativity described concrete, observables, metrics, measurement processes, with unprecedented precision. Demonstrated that metric, measuring distance manner, calculating angles, determining straight line, is un-universal. No single measuring manner valid across entire universe. Metric depends upon local mass-energy distribution. Near a massive star, metric tensor differs from empty intergalactic space region. Every space-time region possesses proper local geometry, proper spatial articulation mode. No scale or geometric pattern forces uniformity traversing universe. Yet this signifies not distance vanishes or becomes illusory. Signifies precisely opposite: distance radicalises as real essence. Distance is always local, relational, determined by material configurations constituting it. Without matter, energy, no distance, void exists. Void is not space; absence of relation. Loop quantum gravity, research programme seeking General Relativity unification with quantum mechanics, unconfirmed experimentally, advances conjecture with significant ontological consequences: spatial continuity would be approximation. At extreme densities and energies regime, space-time structure could be discrete, relation network, non-continuous manifold. Confirmed, distance radicalises as pure relation: un-measured upon underlying continuity, connectivity between nodes of a combinatory structure. What seemed needing space to exist, distance, separation, defines space first. Conjecture remains open. Un-open is conceptual progression motivating it: Newton to Einstein, each revision eliminated substantiality layer from space. Distance, across frameworks, is no "property" or "entity" or "form", material difference, persisting relation, articulating multiple without reducing to indifference.

1.3. When Distance Ceases to Be Neutral

General Relativity provided concrete, dramatically visible examples of distance's radical non-neutrality. Mass-energy presence not merely occupies space in pre-existing container, transforms separation measuring structure, path definitions, proximity/remoteness relation. Concentrated mass, like star or black hole, modifies local geometry radically. Space-time near mass is curved more than distant from it. No side-effect, surface perturbation of underlying immutable geometry. Structural transformation of geometry itself, no geometry "before" mass-energy transforming it. Geometry is material distribution reading. Light, which Newtonian mechanics assumed straight path in empty space (straight because space Euclidean), follows curved space-time geodesics. Geodesic is shortest distance path between two points in given geometry, straight line concept generalisation to curved spaces. Geometry changes, metric tensor varies point-to-point, geodesics change too. Single geodesic between A and B in Euclidean space (straight line). Curved space, multiple possible "straight lines", multiple geodesics if geometry varies other directions. Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882-1944), British astronomer, organised 1919 expeditions measuring apparent star positions near solar limb during total solar eclipse May 29. Einstein theory correct, space-time near Sun curved by immense mass, distant star light passing near Sun deflected by curvature. Stars appear distinct positions from non-Sun path, shifted in sky. Eddington observed deflection. Found star light deflected ~1.75 arcseconds, matching Einstein prediction. Worldwide celebration as relativity victory. Dramatic confirmation distance light travels non-independent of near mass distribution. Solar presence, mass concentration, transformed space, un-"occupying" merely, transforming metric defining/measuring distances. Gravitational lenses rendered phenomenon dramatically visible. Distant galaxy light passing near concentrated mass, massive galaxy, cluster, black hole, space-time curvature deflects light rays. Pattern no simple refraction; geometric deformation. Distant galaxy seen not single sky point, multiple points, multiple images corresponding multiple light paths around lens. Multiple "ways going straight", multiple geodesics, depending photon trajectory. Each path "shortest", following curved space-time geodesic, extreme curved space, "shortest" un-unique. Un-converging single final point. Same distant galaxy, singular reality, appears distinct sky sites. No optical illusion. Reflects geometric structure multiplicity, multiple modes being relation same distance; curvature consequence. Gravitational redshift offers another deep manifestation. Robert Pound and Glen Rebka (1959) performed 22-metre Harvard tower laboratory experiment. Emitted gamma radiation (high frequency photons) tower bottom, measured top frequency, small height. Frequency altered. Emitted bottom gravitational well radiation redder (lower frequency) reaching top. Un-photon "losing energy" classically. Metric space-time bottom tower differed top, Earth mass curvature slightly different altitudes. Frequency meaning, oscillation number per time unit, coded differently two sites. As if energetic distance between emission/reception modified frequency, time, measurement meaning. Global Positioning System (GPS) depends upon distance radical non-neutrality. Satellites transmitting signals ground receivers orbit 20,000 km altitude, near gigantic gravitational mass, Earth, moving ~4 km/s. General/Special Relativity alter satellite time rate compared Earth surface. Time runs faster satellites (weaker gravitational field, higher altitude); moves slower ground-relative (speed perturbs metric). Competing effects; net result satellite time passes ~38 microseconds per day faster than surface. Without relativistic corrections, accounting metric differences orbit/surface, time passing different speeds local geometry, calculated position diverges several metres daily. System useless precision navigation. Daily satellite relativistic corrections operational admission distance un-neutral, metric changes material configuration, space consequence, un-foundation. Cosmological distance offers another complexity level, revealing non-neutrality aspects. Astronomers measuring distant galaxy distance, no single number answers "how far?" Comoving distance, separation two objects would have universe "frozen" present expansion. Luminosity distance, deduced redshift (expansion frequency change) under assumed cosmological history. Angular diameter distance, galaxy sky subtended angle, translated distance units via model. Each definition translates distinct relational form, mass-energy articulation manner across separation. None "true" absolute sense; all instruments articulating real via distinct inscriptive regimes. None superfluous, each measures distinct relation aspect constituting cosmic interval. Quantum non-locality offers radical constraint type. Entangled particles, prepared joint quantum state, measurement results one particle correlate instantly another, independent spatial separation, un-explainable local hidden variables. Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen (1935) theoretically indicated, Bell inequalities tests confirmed (John Bell 1964; Alain Aspect 1982+). Classical spatial separation, two distinct positions objects, exhausts un-real articulation modes in entangled states. Un-violating Relativity, no usable information transmitted faster than light. Reveals spatial separation no absolute barrier certain quantum correlation modes. Distance un-neutral, admits correlation regimes un-respecting classical locality. Separation un-isolates completely. Distance articulation mode admitting multiple relation regimes, local, non-local, without non-locality implying distance causality. (Note: non-locality refutes local determinism; ontological interpretation remains open, depending quantum mechanics interpretation. "Non-local correlation" to "real in-itself non-local" transition philosophical interpretation, un-direct experimental data reading.)

1.4. If Distance Is Relation, What Sustains Relations?

Distance is primary material relation, sustained separation between differences maintaining distinguishability. Geometric dimension is subsequent legibility regime. Every examined example, curvature, light deflection, gravitational redshift, cosmological distance, quantum correlations, confirms distance un-neutral: depends upon material configuration, changes with it, inseparable from it. Container fell; in its place remained material relations network sustaining locally.

However, relations without cohesion dissolve. Distance sustained separation, something must sustain separation. Differences un-maintained by constraint disperse into homogeneity, uniform gas lacking persisting configurations. Thermodynamics describes tendency: isolated system, entropy grows maximum, temperature/pressure/density differences attenuate, system converges thermal equilibrium, state where spontaneous reorganisation un-possible. Universe mere dispersion without cohesion, result accelerated heat death: maximum homogeneity lacking persisting structures. Galaxies, stars, clusters, cosmic web filaments existing, configurations persisting billions of years against entropic tendency, demands cohesion operator sustaining differences as differences. Question precise: what produces cohesion between separated material configurations? What maintains differences as differences, separations as separations, intervals as intervals?

Tradition answered: gravity, body attraction force. "Attraction" word presupposes intended explanation: separated bodies prior space "attracting" across space. Space relation, gravity cannot be force traversing outside. Cohesion must be relational, internal to structure sustaining distances. Gravity operates un-in space; is of space, mode material relations mutually constrain.

Distance does not separate points in space; it sustains the differences of which space is a consequence.

2. Gravity as Relational Cohesion

2.1. From Force to Bond: Genealogy of Gravity

The question emerging from container dissolution, if space is no prior stage and distance is primary material relation, finds answer in second layer: what maintains these relations? What sustains cohesion between differences? Gravity history is history of this question gaining radically deeper forms.

Aristotle conceived gravity as intrinsic property of each substance essence. Earth element naturally tends cosmos centre; water follows; air ascends; fire moves periphery. Un-interaction between bodies, telos manifestation where substance seeks proper place. Stone fall is essence expression, Aristotelian cosmos ontological hierarchy where gravity functions as structure realisation. Gain evident: explanatory coherence ordered cosmos constitutive principles. Each gravitational phenomenon intelligible, stone falls earth tends centre, smoke rises fire tends periphery. Cost profound: teleology lodged foundation. Gravity un-describes processes, authorises, orientates towards constitutive ends. Cosmos theatre of essences in realisation, fall final act of ontological drama. "Why stone falls?" receives circular answer: falls nature is to fall. Essence explains process essence presupposes.

Newton shifted understanding radically. Gravity became un-essential property, quantifiable interaction: $F = G\frac{mm'}{r^2}$. Universal law functioning indifferently any mass, context, un-appealing substantial natures/ontological places. Teleological essence eliminated. Newton introduced ambiguity self-recognised: named gravity "attraction", word carrying anthropomorphic residue, suggesting bodies sought mutually. Correspondence with Bentley (1692-1693), Newton insisted "absurd" conceiving bodies attracting across vacuum without material mediation, operating between them un-mere mathematical formula. Law functioned extraordinary precision, predicting eclipses, calculating orbits, determining celestial mass. Gain immense: quantitative universality, predictive precision, terrestrial/celestial phenomena unification under same law. Mathematical structure carried disturbing metaphysical consequence: action-at-a-distance operated instantaneously. Newtonian equation contained no temporal parameter between two bodies separation and force transmission between them. Gravity propagated infinitely fast, immediate connection any universe distance, un-mediating material process. Newton recognised difficulty; offered no solution. Question remained open: how attraction operated? What nature bond? Force language remained, ambiguity between successful mathematical formula and explaining physical mechanism.

Ernst Mach transformed Leibniz metaphysical critique into operative physical program. In Die Mechanik (1883), attacked absolute space through decisive consequence: inertia. Newton justified inertia via absolute space, bodies resist acceleration existing against immobile background. Mach inverted: body inertia determined by all universe matter distribution. Newtonian bucket resolves without invisible entity, water concavity results relative rotation distant stars, un-confronting transcendent space. Double gain: eliminates container cause; transforms inertia relational property, un-intrinsic body resistance, effect relation rest cosmic matter. Einstein recognised explicitly as decisive inspiration, named "Mach's principle". Mach remained empiricist, distant matter determines local inertia observable fact, un-constitutive co-determination. Lacking mechanism, dynamic geometry. Absolute space eliminated; nothing replaced structure. Structure would be space-time curvature.

Path to dissolution un-deductive, perceptive. 1907, Einstein had simple insight: body free fall experiences no weight. Falling elevator, objects float freely, gravity effect vanishes. Detail secondary, Einstein saw structural. Gravity vanishes under free fall, un-intrinsic world property, relative acceleration effect. Free fall observer inertial; Earth surface observer accelerated upwards, moving away free fall. Gravitational "force" sustaining surface bodies un-attraction, Earth pushing against acceleration. Einstein called insight "happiest thought of my life" seeing false problem dissolution. Gravity/inertia ceased separate phenomena, became same phenomenon facets seen distinct reference frames. Inertia kinematic property, space-time trajectory pattern, gravity indistinguishable inertia, gravity geometry. No "gravitational force" separate entity; space-time curvature determining trajectories.

Einstein eliminated ambiguity eliminating "force" idea. Mass-energy creates space-time curvature; curvature dictates mass-energy paths. No linear causality, mass-energy/curvature two single phenomenon aspects. Free fall body follows geodesic, straight path curved geometry.
