1. Dissolution of Substrate

1.1. Genealogy of Substantialism

Substantialist intuition seems constitutive of Western thought: if something emerges, it must emerge from something; if a beginning exists, a prior condition rendering it possible must exist. This intuition is no discovery, it is a historical construction, sedimented across overlapping, mutually reinforcing layers of thought. The genealogy following is instrumental: serving to highlight the pattern persisting beneath translations, not to offer an encyclopaedic survey.

Thales affirmed water as arché, that from which all things derive and to which they return. Transformation is continuous in water: it can be vapour, liquid, ice, without losing substantial identity. The gain is evident: unity of substance explains multiplicity of manifestations. The cost is equal: multiplicity is reduced to a derivation of a prior, abiding entity. Water subsists beneath all changes; differences are mere surface modifications of a single substrate. Anaximander rejects water, it is too determined. He proposes the apeiron: the unlimited, the indeterminate. Indetermination is more fundamental than any determination emerging from it; it is an infinite reserve of potential. Again the pattern: something precedes, something contains, something sustains. Anaximenes returns to the determined: air. Rarefied, it becomes fire; condensed, it becomes water, then earth. Air is arché because variation from rare to dense shows in simple terms how multiplicity proceeds from unity. Heraclitus breaks with substantial permanence, but not with the demand for arché: fire is constant flux, but flux with measure, with reason, a law immanent to process. Even Heraclitus, insisting all flows, presumes flux exists, a base operation exists, and that change requires that from which it changes. Heraclitean logos, reason governing flux, measure regulating transformation, is already an ordering principle, arché in dynamic form. The difference between Heraclitus and predecessors is no rejection of foundation; it is the form foundation assumes (process instead of substance). Foundation abides.

Common to these diverse proposals is the presupposition that something permanent must exist beneath change, a substrate persisting while forms transform. Arché is not merely first in temporal order, what existed before all else, , but the ontological foundation sustaining reality at every moment. Multiplicity derives from unity; change presumes permanence; becoming rests upon being. The question's very structure, "what is the world made of?", contains this presupposition: the phrase "made of" presumes a material of which it is made. One cannot answer "nothing" without appearing to deny the world's existence. The question forces the search for a substrate, and the discovered substrate legitimates the question. Circularity is invisible yet operating. This conceptual structure, a permanent substrate sustaining modifications, defines the substantialism dominating Western tradition across two and a half millennia, shaping philosophy and emerging science alike.

Plato discards not arché; he duplicates it. Eternal Forms exist, immutable archetypes, and chôra, the receptacle, the "third nature" between being and becoming. In Timaeus, the Demiurge contemplates eternal Forms and imprints them upon chôra like seals on wax. Chôra welcomes all forms while possessing none; it is passive, receptive, available. Plato describes it via negations: lacking proper form, receiving all forms, confused with none, "hardly believable", apprehended by a "kind of bastard reasoning". It is substrate as a welcoming receptacle, not transforming matter, yet still a substrate, still a prior condition. Gain: explaining how the multiple receives order, how the chaotic is informed. Cost: chôra abides as a passive prior condition rendering all determination possible. The instability chôra seems to recognise, formless agitation, is immediately subordinated to Forms as a principle. Multiplicity emerges not; it is received by that which awaits.

Aristotle radicalises the demand: hylê, prime matter, is an absolutely indeterminate substrate. No quality belongs to it; it is pure potency, capable of receiving every form without possessing any. Substantial change, when one thing ceases to be and another comes to be, is explained by positing something persisting: hylê. Without prime matter, change would be absolute destruction of one thing and absolute creation of another, a break without continuity. Hylê restores continuity; allowing one to state that what was ceased to be it, yet that of which it was made continues, now informing a different form. Gain: explaining change without falling into successive annihilation and creation absurdities. Cost: ontological antecedence becomes necessary. Lacking a preceding entity, lacking matter supporting forms, change exists not, merely appearance and disappearance. The form/matter schema subordinates all change to underlying permanence, and this subordination becomes, in Aristotle, a condition of intelligibility. Thinking change without substrate is, for the Metaphysics, thinking absurdity. What Aristotle considers not, remaining unthought in subsequent tradition, is the possibility that change requires no substantial continuity: that reorganisation is primary, and permanence apparently demanded is a retrospective effect of a stabilisation long enough to seem foundational.

The pattern installed in these four stations, Thales, Anaximander, Plato, Aristotle, is no mere option among many. It is the founding pattern of Western ontology: all change requires permanence; all emergence presumes antecedence; all becoming rests upon being. The issue is not whether each philosopher got the answer right, water, apeiron, Forms, hylê are vastly different answers, , but that the question's form remained identical. Form governs: so long as the question is "what is the world made of?" or "from what substrate does multiplicity emerge?", the answer will always be some prior foundation. Emergence without foundation is no forbidden answer, it is an answer the question, as formulated, cannot even articulate.

Modernity abandons not this pattern; translating it into new terms while preserving its constitutive structure, and translations are instructive, showing the pattern belongs to no single school but is a deep habit of Western thought. Descartes posits res extensa, matter is substance defined by extension, filling all space without gaps. Cartesian matter is no indeterminate Aristotelian substrate; it is geometrically defined substance, describable via figures and motions. Yet ontological function is identical: something abides beneath changes, something sustains variations, something of which transformations are modifications. Res extensa is hylê's new name, a modern translation of substrate tradition questions not. Newton goes further: space and time are absolutes, empty containers existing independently of anything material. The universe is a theatre where matter moves upon a fixed stage. In the Scholium to the Principia, Newton distinguishes absolute space and time (mathematical, true) from relative space and time (apparent, measured by clocks and rulers). Absolute space abides ever similar and immovable; absolute time flows equably without relation to anything external. Nineteenth-century luminiferous ether functions as a substrate for light propagation: if light is a wave, a waving medium must exist, even if infinitesimally tenuous, sustaining its propagation. Michelson and Morley experiments (1887) detected no Earth motion through ether; Einstein abandoned the hypothesis as unnecessary. Each era offers a different answer, water, air, fire, apeiron, Forms, hylê, res extensa, absolute space, ether, , but each obeys the same logic: something prior exists, something contains, something sustains. The demand for antecedence is no rational discovery of a pre-existing pattern; it is a conceptual operation sedimented until appearing natural. In each case, arché, chôra, hylê, res extensa, absolute space, ether, the same operation repeats: emergence is thought as derivation from a prior substrate. The question's form dictates the answer. The demand for antecedence is no natural reason discovery: it is historical sedimentation traversing registers (cosmological, metaphysical, physical) without ever being questioned as such. In each case, substrate is no hypothesis, it is a presupposition of the question itself. Questioning the presupposition denies not that the world possesses history; it recognises that demanding ontological antecedence is a conceptual operation, not a logical necessity. It is precisely this recognition that twentieth-century physics renders inescapable, not by arbitrary philosophical decree, but through transforming theories describing the world with extraordinary precision.

1.2. Physical Dissolution of the Substrate

Twentieth-century physics operated a progressive dissolution of this pattern across three interconnected levels. Each level rendered unsustainable a layer of substantialism feeding the demand for a prior foundation.

Relativity dissolved Newtonian absolutes, doing so not by philosophical speculation, but by internal empirical description demands. Special relativity (1905) emerged from the impossibility of detecting luminiferous ether and from the constancy of light speed across all inertial frames. Consequence is immediate and devastating for substantialism: if light speed is identical for all observers, space and time cannot be absolute, simultaneity is relative to observers in relative motion; two observers disagree on distant event simultaneity, object lengths, process durations, , and both are correct within their frames. No frame is privileged; none defines "true" space and time. General relativity (1915) radicalised: spacetime is no rigid, immutable stage, it is a dynamic structure curving in the presence of mass and energy. Gravity is no force acting across empty space; it is spacetime curvature itself. Wheeler formulated with precision: matter tells spacetime how to curve; spacetime tells matter how to move. The Newtonian receptacle became an active participant. No empty theatre exists where actors move; an interplay between form and structure obtains. Ether was abandoned, special relativity requires no light propagation medium. Absolute space was eliminated, no fixed frame exists. Absolute time was eliminated, no uniform flow independent of all else exists. Classical physics' three substrate-receptacles were dissolved or dynamicised. What remains is no substance but dynamic structure, no receptacle but a relational field. Gravity, classical physics' paradigmatic force, conceived by Newton as action at a distance through empty space, reveals itself as intrinsic spacetime curvature. An apple "falls" not because a mysterious force pulls it; it follows a geodetic line of spacetime curved by Earth's mass. Gravitation is no link between bodies in space; it is a geometric property of spatiotemporal structure itself. Relational regime entirely replaces substantialist regime: distance is no separation between two points in a fixed container; it is a property of material configuration itself.

This dissolution is no loss, it is a profound transformation of ontological categories. Where classical physics assumed a fixed container and variable content, general relativity shows container and content are inseparable: spacetime geometry depends upon mass-energy distribution, and mass-energy distribution depends upon geometry. Circularity is no defect, it is the very structure of the relational regime replacing substantialism. There is no stage first and play second; a constitutive coupling between what tradition thought as "substrate" and what it thought as "process" obtains. Einstein's field equation encodes this circularity with mathematical precision: the Ricci tensor (geometry) equals the stress-energy tensor (matter-energy). Geometry and matter mutually determine; neither precedes the other. Substrate, a fixed container preceding content, survives not this circularity. What emerges is a relational regime: properties tradition assigned to "space" (distance, geometry, curvature) are properties of material configuration itself, not of an independent container.

Quantum mechanics operated an even deeper transformation. Heisenberg's uncertainty principle establishes that position and momentum cannot be simultaneously determined with arbitrary precision, not because instruments are inadequate, but because a quantum entity possesses not both properties simultaneously in a defined manner. Wave-particle duality shows quantum entities are neither waves nor particles in classical terms, behaving as waves in certain experiments and as particles in others. Superposition permits quantum systems to exist in multiple states prior to measurement. Entanglement correlates particles such that measurement on one instantly affects the other's state, regardless of distance, a phenomenon Einstein termed "spooky action at a distance" (spukhafte Fernwirkung), which Aspect's experiments (1982) and subsequent tests confirmed experimentally, violating Bell's inequalities and refuting local realism. The particle as a "thing", a localised object featuring defined properties independent of observation, dissolved. What existed prior to measurement was no "thing with hidden properties" (violation of Bell's inequalities excludes this interpretation under reasonable conditions); it was something for which the category of "thing" is inadequate. What quantum mechanics describes are no things possessing properties; they are measurement processes producing results. Underlying ontology remains controversial among physicists and philosophers, Copenhagen, Bohm, Everett, GRW/CSL interpretations compete without resolution, , yet none restores classical substance. The quantum world is made of no "things" in the common sense; it is made of something more relational, more processual, for which inherited categories lack an adequate name. What quantum mechanics showed is not merely that the world is "strange", but that categories inherited from substantialism (localised thing, intrinsic property, defined trajectory) are no categories of the real in general; they are categories of a particular stabilisation regime working at macroscopic scale and failing at the scale where material compatibilities reorganise. Quantum dissolution is no relativisation, it is a categorial displacement: properties tradition assigned to "substance" present themselves, in the quantum frame, as measurement regime effects, not as intrinsic attributes of self-sufficient entities.

Quantum field theory carried dissolution to its conclusion, operating a most radical transformation. Particles are no things inhabiting space; they are excitations of quantum fields permeating spacetime. An electron is no localised corpuscle; it is a quantum of the electronic field. Creating a particle means exciting the field; annihilating means de-exciting. Two electrons are indistinguishable, not because they look alike, but because they are identical excitations of the same field, like two identical waves in the same ocean. An ontology of things-in-space yielded to an ontology of fields-constituting-space. There is no empty space first as receptacle and things second; fields exist whose dynamics produce both what we term "particles" and what we term "space". Quantum vacuum is particularly revealing: in classical physics, vacuum is pure absence; in quantum field theory, vacuum is minimum energy state, no absence but a particular configuration. Virtual fluctuations create and annihilate particle pairs continuously; Casimir effect (measurable force between conducting plates, vacuum pressure effect) demonstrates these fluctuations are real; zero-point energy is non-zero even in ground state. Physical "nothing" is no metaphysical nothing: it is a dynamic field, operating configuration, material regime featuring measurable properties. Quantum vacuum contains energy, and this energy is no metaphor; it is calculable, measurable (Casimir effect), constituting one of contemporary physics' deepest problems (the "cosmological constant problem", discrepancy between vacuum energy calculated via quantum field theory and cosmologically observed differs by a factor of $10^{120}$, largest quantitative discrepancy in physics history). Conceptual transformation merits emphasis: things-in-space ontology yielded to fields-constituting-space ontology. Classical substrate, empty receptacle containing substances, dissolves into an ontology where fields are primary and "things" are derived, excitations, modes of field being. Inversion is complete: where tradition thought things inhabiting space, contemporary physics thinks fields whose dynamics constitute both things and space. No exterior exists; no container; no level more fundamental than fields. Ontology is flat, no stratification between substrate and process, receptacle and content. What tradition called "substance" is redescribed as stabilisation effect, local, provisional field configuration, no permanent entity subsisting beneath change.

Dissolution operated by twentieth-century physics is triadic and progressive. First level: relativity rendered receptacles unsustainable, absolute space, absolute time, luminiferous ether. Spacetime is no container; it is dynamic structure. Second level: quantum mechanics dissolved substances, particle as localised thing with intrinsic properties yields to processual entities whose properties depend upon measurement conditions. Third level: quantum field theory rendered things-in-space ontology inoperative, fields exist whose dynamics produce both "particles" and "space". At each level, a substantialism layer was displaced. What remains is no nothingness, it is a processual, relational, dynamic regime. Yet this regime possesses a property substantialist tradition conceived not: it is immanent without being substantial. No exterior grounds it; no substance sustains it; operating from within itself. At this juncture an explicit differentiation with Spinoza emerges. Spinoza's radical immanence, Deus sive Natura, no transcendence, no external creator, appears to converge with substrate dissolution. Lacking an external receptacle, production is immanent; Nature is made by no one, making itself. Natura naturans is immanent productive power expressing itself across infinite attributes. Yet Spinozan Substance abides infinite, eternal, cause of itself, causa sui. Functioning as ultimate foundation: arché under a new name. Attributes (extension, thought) and modes (particular things) derive from Substance with logical necessity. Substance $\rightarrow$ modes relation is derivation: multiple proceeds from one; emergence is foundation effect. Spinoza destroys creator transcendence but preserves foundation substance. The position sustained here maintains radical immanence, no exteriority to the real, no transcendence, no creator operating from outside, , yet dissolves the substance sustaining it in Spinoza. Immanence means not resting upon foundation; it means an operation regime lacking foundation. Spinozan immanence is Substance immanence, everything is in God, everything expresses through Substance. Immanence without substance is process immanence, everything operates from within itself, with nothing sustaining underneath. No Substance exists from which modes derive with logical necessity. Material operation exists whose emergence grounds itself on nothing prior to itself. Difference is precise: where Spinoza writes necessity, the position sustained here writes contingency. Spinozan modes derive from Substance as conclusions derive from axioms, with logical necessity. Material emergence derives from nothing, reorganising itself, without next configuration contained in prior as conclusion contained in premises. Spinozan immanence is necessitarian; immanence without substance is contingent. This difference is no nuance: it is the border separating a philosophy maintaining foundation (via logical necessity) from one dissolving it without recourse.

1.3. Models of Emergence Without Foundation

Contemporary physics proposes "quantum creation" models operating in this immanence regime lacking foundation. One must distinguish three categorially distinct positions regarding cosmic emergence, for confusion among them feeds persistent errors. First position is classical substantialism: universe emerges from something, arché, hylê, absolute space, ether. Emergence is derivation; substrate precedes and sustains. Second position is theological creatio ex nihilo: God creates from absolute nothing, total metaphysical absence of any determination, via free will act. "Nothing" is radical: no matter, space, time, laws. Third position is emergence without substrate: rejecting both classical substrate and absolute nothing. The three positions are mutually irreducible, un-reductible without sense loss. Confusing third with first (as if physics merely replaced "ether" with "quantum field" maintaining derivation schema) is an error ignoring antecedence dissolution, quantum field is no substrate from which universe emerges; it is a theoretical frame within which emergence is described. Confusing third with second (as if "quantum creation" were theology lacking God) is an error projecting onto physics a narrative structure foreign to it, creatio ex nihilo presumes willpower act and absolute nothing, categories no physics model uses.

Alexander Vilenkin described in 1982 a quantum tunnelling process: universe emerges "from nothing", yet Vilenkin's "nothing" is no total metaphysical absence. It is absence of classical geometry, not absence of quantum structure or laws. Universe "tunnels" from a configuration lacking classical spacetime to a configuration featuring expanding spacetime. No temporal "before" exists, time emerges with universe. No agent exists, process is spontaneous, governed by quantum laws. Vilenkin's "nothing" is already described by a theoretical regime featuring proper conditions of possibility, quantum field theory operates as frame within which model makes sense. Alpha decay analogy is instructive: an alpha particle escaping atomic nucleus violates no physics laws, traversing a potential barrier classical mechanics declares impenetrable yet quantum mechanics permits traversing with calculable probability. Vilenkin applies identical logic to cosmology: universe "tunnels" from a non-geometric configuration to a geometric configuration, without classical mechanism "pushing" it there. Process spontaneity is essential point, no motor, efficient cause, decision exists. Tunnelling occurs because quantum mechanics permits it, not because something impels it. Distinction between "being permitted by laws" and "being caused by agent" is ontologically decisive: Vilenkin's universe emerges not because caused but because nothing prevents it, tunnelling probability is non-zero, and that suffices. Vilenkin's "nothing" is already described by a theoretical regime featuring proper conditions of possibility, quantum field theory operates as frame within which model makes sense.

Stephen Hawking and James Hartle proposed in 1983 the "no-boundary" condition: in imaginary time (standard mathematics technique in physics), initial singularity disappears. Spacetime becomes a regular closed surface, like a sphere surface lacking boundary or privileged point. The question "what was there before the Big Bang?" dissolves: like asking "what lies north of the North Pole?", applying category (north direction) where it terminates. No-boundary condition is no prior state causing universe; it is a mathematical consistency condition determining universe wave function. No "before" exists because time is internal universe coordinate, not external coordinate within which universe resides. Spherical surface analogy is precise and merits development: just as sphere surface is finite yet boundary-less, walking upon it one encounters no edge, reaches no "margin", , spacetime in Hartle-Hawking proposal is finite yet boundary-less. No first point exists; regular surface exists closing upon itself. Proposal eliminates not emergence question, reformulating it radically: instead of asking "from what prior state did universe emerge?", question becomes "what consistency condition determines primordial emergence regime?" Question shifts from causality to consistency, antecedence to structure. Shift is categorial, not merely technical: Hartle-Hawking model answers not "what was there before" with "nothing" or "something else", dissolving question showing "before" category applies not.

Lawrence Krauss argued in A Universe from Nothing (2012) that physics explains universe origin from nothing. David Albert objected that Krauss's "nothing", quantum vacuum with operating laws, is no philosophical "nothing", absolute absence of all determination. Critique is partially fair: if "nothing" signifies total metaphysical absence, physics proposals explain not creatio ex nihilo in philosophical sense. Yet critique presumes absolute nothing notion is coherent, presupposition open to question. Position sustained here aligns with neither camp: neither Krauss (claiming too much, physics "resolved" origin question) nor Albert (presuming too much, "absolute nothing" notion is coherent and operative). Quantum creation models are no disguised theological ex nihilo, nor creation from nothing demonstration. They are best available theoretical frame formulations showing temporal antecedence category applies not to primordial emergence. Models, not stabilised real-in-itself descriptions. Caution is constitutive: using these results as indicators that substrate or "before" demand is metaphysical presupposition, not logical necessity, without canonising them as definitive descriptions. Position is no agnosticism, suspending judgment through information lack. It is inscriptive discipline: recognition that every model operates inside a formulation regime featuring proper conditions of possibility. Theoretical physics describes not "naked" real; describing real as formulable inside specific mathematical frames. Recognising this reduces not models scope; delimiting it with rigour. What can be asserted with rigour is that temporal antecedence demand, a "before" in substantialist sense, is sustained not by best available theoretical frame. What cannot be asserted is that these models describe primordial regime "as it is", independently of formulating frame. Position is simultaneously strong and modest: strong because using physics results to dissolve a millenary metaphysical presupposition; modest because recognising results operate inside specific theoretical regime authorising no assertions regarding "real in-itself". This double demand, using physics without canonising it, is inscriptive discipline governing entire analysis.

1.4. Emergence as Primary Event

If substrates were dissolved, receptacles, substances, "nothing", , what remains? Emergence as primary event. Cosmos emerges not from something; it emerges, and that emerging is fundamental ontological fact. Emergence is no prior foundation derivation; it is base regime from which all stabilisation becomes intelligible. What appears as "substance" is late, local, provisional stabilisation, configuration lasting while sustaining compatibilities persist. A proton is stable, persisting across immensely long times, , yet its stability is no substantial property; it is compatibility effect among quarks, gluons, and strong field dynamics. Should those compatibilities alter (under extreme temperature and density conditions, as in first fractions of a second following Big Bang), stability dissolves and apparently permanent configuration reveals itself transitory. "Substance" is retrospective name for stabilisations that, while lasting, seem foundation.

Dissolving substrate is denying not the real, it is recognising the real needs no foundation to operate. Emergence is no nothingness; it is primary operation. Fear that substrate dissolution leads to nihilism, "lacking foundation, nothing exists", is understandable yet groundless. What dissolution shows is that material operation is more originative than foundation: matter operates prior to any foundation justifying it, and foundation is itself late construction attempting to explain an operation already ongoing.

Two consequences follow from this result. First: no ontological "before" exists in sense tradition presumed. Temporal antecedence category applies not to primordial emergence. Asking "what was there before?" is asking category to apply where it operated not yet. Analogy is exact: asking what exists north of North Pole applies north direction notion to point where notion terminates. Second consequence: substrate is retrospective fiction, backward projection of present-experienced stability. Present is stable: solid matter exists, persisting objects exist, repeating regularities exist. It is tempting, and tradition yielded to temptation across millennia, to project this stability backward and suppose "beginning" was also stable, that something solid, permanent, founding existed. Yet "beginning" was not stable; it was process, fluctuation, reorganisation lacking precedence. Stability we experience now is late result of processes producing it, no prior condition from which those processes derived. Apparently eternal rock is provisional configuration of nuclear and electromagnetic interactions; apparently indestructible atom is quantum constraints stabilisation that, under different conditions, would reorganise. What seems foundation is effect; what seems permanent is durable.

Lacking prior substrate, emergence features no foundation. Yet will it possess a subject? Question shifts: agent demand is as deep-rooted as substrate demand, and equally unjustified.

The cosmos emerges not from something, it emerges, and that emerging is all there is.

2. Dissolution of Subject

2.1. Genealogy of the Demand for an Agent

Substrate dissolution leaves a gap tradition immediately fills: lacking permanent substrate, at least an agent exists, someone or something operating change. Demand is equally deep-rooted and equally unjustified. Western philosophical tradition rests upon a presupposition few dared question until very recently: all change presumes an agent. This presupposition is no innocent one. Stabilising thought inside a structure traversing centuries, from Aristotle to Kant, transforming "what changes?" question into prior subordination: "who changes?" Efficient cause question, who made this?, precedes and conditions all change inquiry. Lacking answer to this question, change remains unintelligible for tradition. Only comprehending this genealogy, recognising historical sedimentation producing it, is it possible to dissolve dependence between change and subject tradition consolidated as natural evidence.

Aristotelian causal architecture is foundation: all change demands efficient cause, every efficient cause rests upon agent. Chain ascends to prime mover, pure actuality lacking potency, thought thinking itself. Thomas Aquinas consolidated logic to maximum theological degree: five ways converge on first agent demand, unmoved mover, uncaused cause, intelligent orderer. Lacking agent, there is not merely motion absence: there is intelligibility absence.

Descartes shifts the point of reference: subject is no longer celestial mover; it is reflective consciousness. Cogito establishes subject as irrefutable foundation and condition of all possible representation, lacking subject, no legible world exists.

Kant carries argument to its most sophisticated transcendental form, and hardest to dissolve. Subject is not merely representation cause; it is that rendering all experience possible. Understanding categories, causality, substance, unity, are no things-in-themselves properties; they are transcendental subject structures shaping experience. Lacking these structures, lacking this transcendental architecture, no phenomenal world would exist. Agent demand reaches apex: one cannot demonstrate subject exists not, for every demonstration presumes it. Kant elevates subject to transcendental condition: not merely agent acting in empirically given world, but condition without which no experienceable world would exist. Transcendental subject is not in the world; it is condition of world possibility as ordered experience. This elevation appears to render it immune to all empirical critique: one can show certain empirical subject exists not, but how show transcendental subject exists not, if it is presupposition of all demonstration?

Tradition consolidated therefore agent demand across three registers: ontological (Aristotle, mover initiating all change), epistemological (Descartes, subject without which no representable world exists), transcendental (Kant, structure without which no experienceable world exists). In each register, identical implication: lacking subject, no intelligible operation exists. Genealogy is no historical curiosity; it is diagnosis of a habit sedimented until appearing necessary. Recognising sedimentation is condition for recognising contingency.

At this apogee point Nietzsche introduces a suspicion undermining entire construction. In On the Genealogy of Morality, he states blow with precision: "there is no 'being' behind doing, effecting, becoming; 'the doer' is simply added to the doing, the doing is everything." Grammar demands subject for every predicate: "lightning flashes", "rain falls", "wind blows". Yet linguistic structure reflects not reality structure, imposing separation between agent and action non-existent in real process. No lightning exists first as substance and then executes flashing act; flashing is all lightning there is. Tradition hypostasised grammatical fiction into metaphysical entity; projecting onto world language structure, confusing grammatical necessity with ontological necessity. Nietzsche refutes not subject; exposing grammatical origin of metaphysical presumption. Lightning is paradigmatic: no one supposes entity exists first in potency and then executes flashing act, yet grammar obliges stating "lightning flashes", subject and predicate. When identical schema applies to cosmic emergence, "something made universe exist", , grammatical fiction is less visible yet equally operative. We need grammatical subject to form sentences; we need no ontological subject for processes to occur. Subject metaphysical category, permanent entity subsisting beneath actions and founding them, is no reality datum but grammar projection onto real. Consequence is direct: founding agent demand is linguistic habit projection onto emergence. Question imposing itself: what category captures material operation where no subject exists?

2.2. Gesture as Impersonal Operation

Lacking ontological subject, what exists? Answer must emerge from material processes themselves, from phenomenon to operator, not operator to phenomenon. Existing categories insufficiency (intentional action and passive event) is what obliges thinking a third: gesture, operation producing difference without emanating from agent.

Stellar collapse offers an unequivocal paradigm. Across billions of years, star maintains itself in equilibrium configuration, core thermal pressure compensates mass gravitational attraction. While nuclear fuel exists, this equilibrium persists. Yet fuel is finite. Exhausted, thermal support disappears. What occurs then is no failure or defect, it is matter excess over containment retaining it. Gravitational mass exceeds any constraint form. Outer layers fall in violent acceleration. Core density reaches extreme values. In this process, massive difference production occurs: heavy elements, gold, platinum, uranium, forge in final nuclear reactions; shockwaves propagate; neutrinos flood space; gravitational waves ripple through spacetime; possibly black hole or neutron star emerges. Radical local material configuration alteration. And none of this requires an agent. Star chose not to collapse. Aimed not to create heavy elements. Represented not its proper end. Operation occurs because matter exceeds all configuration, material potentiality overflows any form retaining it. Heavy elements forged in supernova will incorporate into molecular clouds, where gravitational and thermodynamic constraints will produce new configurations, new stellar systems, new matter distributions. Difference generated by collapse propagates: not as intentional cause effect, but as material compatibilities reorganisation. Each supernova redistributes interstellar medium chemical composition, altering conditions from which future configurations will form. Difference production is cumulative without being oriented, accumulating consequences without aiming at result.

Mineral crystallisation exhibits identical pattern with simplicity favouring conceptual clarity. Consider a saturated sodium chloride solution: salt molecules are dispersed, surrounded by water molecules, maintained in solution via electrostatic interactions with solvent. No fixed geometry; no regular pattern. Yet system is not neutral, retaining tensions: attractive forces between $\text{Na}^+$ and $\text{Cl}^-$ ions compete with solvation forces. Solution maintains while specific conditions subsist, temperature, pressure, concentration. No agent orders molecules. Yet when conditions are perturbed, cooling, vibration, seed crystal addition, , order erupts. Molecules organise into precise geometric patterns: salt cubes, snow hexagons, quartz prisms. Each molecule responds to immediate neighbourhood constraints, electromagnetic forces, distances, geometries. No molecule "knows" final structure. None directs construction. And yet order emerges, precise, reproducible. Conformity lacking conformer. Result can be of extraordinary geometric beauty, quartz prisms, mica plates, salt cubes, snowflake ramifications, , yet beauty is unprojected. Emerging from local constraints repeated millions of times, at each lattice site, without any process level anticipating global pattern. Crystal symmetry is elementary interactions effect, no plan execution.

Quantum vacuum fluctuations offer an even more radical example. In vacuum, particle-antiparticle pairs emerge continuously, exist infinitesimal time fractions, and mutually annihilate. This process is regulated by no external agent. It is quantum regime property, direct consequence of uncertainty principle: energy can be "borrowed" from vacuum for sufficiently brief intervals. Casimir effect confirms measurably, force between conducting plates is fluctuating vacuum pressure. Creation and annihilation occur lacking creator or annihilator, simply happening. Hawking radiation follows identical pattern: near black hole horizon, virtual pairs split; one particle falls inside, other escapes. Energy emission lacking emitter, mass decrease lacking agent decreeing it. Matter operates; no one operates it. Hawking radiation is particularly instructive for gesture question because combining two dissolutions: substrate dissolution (vacuum is no "nothing") and subject dissolution (emission is no one's act). Black hole "decides" not to emit; quantum physics laws in curved geometry determine process without any instance initiating or controlling it. Result, slow evaporation, mass loss, dissolution destiny across immense time scales, is consequence of quantum mechanics and gravitation compatibilities, no program execution.

Pre-biotic chemical systems reveal self-organisation dynamics where order emerges from local interactions. In fluid heated from below, Henri Bénard classical experiment, , when temperature gradient reaches certain threshold, convection ceases to be disordered and organises spontaneously into hexagonal cells, each rotating systematically. Below threshold, homogeneity; above, hexagons. Transition is abrupt. No agent shapes cells. Material interactions themselves, ascending heat, viscosity, gravity, produce this conformation. Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction offers even more remarkable dynamic: simple chemical compounds, interacting, generate rhythmic oscillations, alternating colours, spirals propagating in thin layer with geometric beauty. Spatiotemporal patterns in purely chemical system, lacking exterior coordination, waves propagating and reorganising, spirals rotating and interacting, in a dance no choreography governs. Prigogine named these systems "dissipative structures": ordered configurations maintaining precisely because far from equilibrium, fed by continuous energy flow. Order is no rest; it is operation sustained by dissipation. Pattern is identical: simple components produce configurations none projected. Large-scale cosmic structure formation obeys identical logic: following Big Bang, universe was near perfectly uniform. Small density heterogeneities, amplified by gravity across hundreds of millions of years, led to galaxies, clusters, matter filaments formation. Where density was slightly above average, gravity attracted more matter, increasing density further; where lower, matter drained. Gravitational instability was directed by no one, it is gravity property to operate attractively upon any density heterogeneity, amplifying it. Where density exceeds average, gravity concentrates more matter; where lower, drains it. Process is blind, local, inevitable given initial conditions, yet non-teleological, because initial conditions "contain" not result. No galaxy architect existed, nor stellar engineer. Milky Way, with its hundred billion stars, is result of impersonal processes unfolding across billions of years lacking plan or intention.

Necessary to make explicit distinction these phenomena impose. Philosophical tradition possessed two categories to describe what occurs: intentional action (executed by agent with purpose and end representation) and passive event (affection suffered from outside by inert entity). Supernova is no intentional action, no one executes it, aims at it. Yet also no passive event, no affection suffered from outside; transformation proceeding from stellar configuration internal compatibilities. Crystallisation is no crystalliser work, yet also no exterior perturbation imposed upon liquid; reorganisation emerging when local constraints cross threshold. Quantum fluctuations are no creator acts nor perturbation effects: permanent field regime in ground state. Each phenomenon occupies identical categorial quadrant: active-non-intentional. Difference production exists, lacking aimed finality or subject representing it. Category capturing this quadrant is gesture: material operation producing difference without emanating from subject nor being inert passivity. Matter is neither inert nor intentional; gestating, operating, transforming, producing difference without being passive or conscious. Gesture dissolves traditional active/passive dichotomy and installs a third regime: impersonal operation. Importance of this dissolution is not merely categorial; it is consequence for entire origin thought. Were active/passive dichotomy exhaustive, were all change either agent action or patient affection, , cosmic emergence would have to be either creator act (intentional action) or substrate accident suffered (passive event). Gesture opens third way: emergence as material operation that is neither creator act nor accident, impersonal difference production preceding both intention and passivity.

Excess is fundamental ontological motor, and this point demands particular attention because determining how relationship between configuration and transformation is comprehended. Matter contains potentialities exceeding any actualised configuration. Each gesture actualises certain possibilities and leaves others unactualised. Carbon can form diamond or graphite or fullerene or graphene, identical elemental composition, radically distinct configurations, incomparable physical properties. Water can crystallise in at least fifteen different structures, according to pressure and temperature conditions. Silicon can organise as sand, quartz, glass. In each case, realised configuration is selection among multiple possible, and unrealised ones disappeared not; abiding as material potentialities, available for future reorganisation if conditions alter.

This excess is no lack or waste, it is reorganisation condition. Matter is excessive because gestating: producing ever more than any fixed determination can retain. Stellar collapse is no star failure, it is matter excess over retaining form. Nuclear fusion sustaining equilibrium was itself excess manifestation: nuclear power operating, transforming hydrogen into helium, helium into carbon, carbon into oxygen, , each transformation producing new difference. Quantum fluctuations are no vacuum anomalies; expressing ground state fields contain generative power no configuration can exhaust. Casimir effect measures this power: vacuum energy is real, measurable, operating. Excess produces; failure describes. Distinction is constitutive and must not be inverted under any circumstances: describing stellar collapse as equilibrium "failure" is describing retrospectively, from prior configuration, what is, ontologically, matter excess over containment.

2.3. Philosophical Affinities and Departures

If gesture dissolves subject necessity, it remains to ask: does this concept possess philosophical history? Answer is affirmative, and genealogy is instructive because showing, in each case, affinity and cost.

Spinoza supplies first approximation and his mobilisation is inevitable because Ethics constitutes most systematic attempt to think production lacking transcendence. Natura naturans is pure immanent operation, productive power emanating not from exterior agent but expressing Substance nature itself. Nature is made by no one; making itself, necessarily, according to infinite attributes. Affinity with gesture: operation is immanent, emanating not from exterior agent. Cost, already identified: Substance abides as ultimate foundation, cause of itself, ontological guarantee. Spinoza's immanent operation is operation of something, of Substance modifying necessarily according to its infinite nature. Gesture, as understood here, rests upon nothing, no Substance guarantees production, no infinite nature determines it. Local contingent compatibility exists, no substantial necessity. Difference appears subtle yet is ontologically decisive: in Spinoza, production is necessary (Substance cannot not modify); here, production is contingent (reorganisation can occur or not, according to local compatibilities).

Heidegger introduces Ereignis, appropriative event shifting origin question from "what changes" to "how change gives itself". Gain is real: opening conceptual room for operations requiring no subject in classical sense, happening is more originative than agent. Cost is severe: Ereignis remains bound to Dasein, to comprehension horizon. In pre-symbolic field no Dasein exists, no experiential horizon where being "gives itself", no comprehension receiving appropriation. Heidegger opens door to operation lacking subject yet cannot cross it: his thought maintains as unrenounceable correlation between being and comprehension. Gain is incorporated (origin as happening, not cause) and cost identified (Dasein dependence) without adopting Heideggerian stance as frame.

Deleuze offers maximum affinity: event is impersonal, singularity exists prior to any individuation. In The Logic of Sense, Deleuze distinguishes between states of affairs (mixtures of bodies, corporeal causes) and events (incorporeal effects, singularities distributing upon a surface). "It rains", rain event belongs to no one, is no subject property. Grammar forces illusion that "the rain" is thing "falling"; but originative event is pure becoming, ownerless, centerless. In Difference and Repetition, stance radicalises: individuation is primary relative to constituted individuals; pre-individual singularities distribute in intensity fields preceding all stabilised form. Affinity with gesture: both operate lacking subject, both produce difference, both precede all representation. Cost, postulating a virtual as separate ontological plane, will be differentiated below, when representation question and its limits are made explicit.

Simondon merits particularised attention because representing twentieth century's most rigorous attempt to think individuation lacking individuator, and because proximity to gesture makes differentiation indispensable. In L'individuation à la lumière des notions de forme et d'information (1958), Simondon rejects hylomorphic schema and proposes individuation is primary operation from which individuals emerge as partial, provisional results. Decisive gain: individuation presumes no operating individual; pre-individual field retains tensions and incompatibilities individuation partially configures. First cost: Simondon posits pre-individual as real field featuring proper structure prior to individuation, energetic reserve awaiting resolution. Position sustained here rejects: "pre-individual" is retrospective designation, cut organising tensions as "pre-individual" is individuated regime operation, no pre-existing field description. Second cost: Simondon conceives individuation as "tension resolution", field loaded with incompatibilities resolves into individuated forms. Position sustained here rejects: emergence is no resolution. Local contingent compatibility exists, tensions "resolve" not; producing, via contingency, configurations that can endure. Individuation is no answer to pre-existing problem; it is reorganisation lacking finality. If individuation is resolution, implicit teleology exists, field "seeks" equilibrium. If individuation is local compatibility, radical contingency exists, could fail to occur, and what occurs was no "answer" field contained. Divergence is no terminological nuance; it is ontological difference. Contingency is maintained against resolution, and this maintenance is what separates Simondon's position.

2.4. Late Representation and Rejection of the Virtual

If gesture is material operation producing difference lacking subject, then representation, presuming a system already sufficiently differentiated to refer to its proper operations, is necessarily posterior to gesture. Question demonstrates via logical-ontological path, lacking biotic examples recourse. Star collapses lacking self-representation as collapsing. Crystal forms lacking model of what it will be. Quantum fluctuation emerges lacking vacuum "knowing" it fluctuates. Gesture blindness is constitutive, no defect. Were gesture to know what it does, it would be intentional action, and agent demand would be justified. Every representation is itself late, complex gesture, material operation that, through sufficient complexity, became capable of referring to other operations. Representation grounds not gesture; emerging from it. Recognition is ever a posteriori reconstruction, never direct access to operation rendering it possible. Gesture blindness is no limitation future evolution can overcome, it is constitutive condition of relationship between operation and representation. Representation demands distance between representing and represented; this distance presumes already consummated differentiation; and consummated differentiation is itself gesture prior to representation cutting it. Circle is not vicious; it is constitutive.

Here installs differentiation with Deleuze that prior affinity rendered urgent. Deleuzian impersonal event dissolves agent demand, affinity with gesture is maximum. Yet Deleuze posits virtual as ontological plane distinct from actual: potential field no less real than actualised, "insisting" without existing in actuality. Position sustained here rejects: working solely with present material configurations, in their local compatibilities and incompatibilities. No transcendental immanence plane exists separate from material operations. Deleuzian virtual can function as new substrate, power reserve grounding actualisation. Dissolving substrate and then installing virtual acting as arché would be contradiction. Second cost: Deleuze preserves minimal teleology, virtual "tends" to actualise, "differentiation pressure" exists. Position sustained here rejects all teleology: reorganisation is contingent, un-oriented. Gesture, as understood here, is strictly material and present, referring to no transcendental plane nor virtual reserve. Gestating here, now, in this configuration, lacking reference to plane preceding or orienting it. Difference is operatively decisive: if gesture refers to virtual "insisting", substrate returns under new name; if gesture is strictly material and present, substrate abides dissolved. Virtual rejection is no impoverishment, it is consistency condition. Gesture needs no ontological reserve; needing solely local material compatibilities that, via contingency, produce configurations. Supernova refers to no virtual plane; referring to gravitational, thermodynamic, nuclear constraints, material, present, measurable. Crystal actualises no transcendental field potential; reorganising local molecular interactions.

If emergence possesses neither substrate nor subject, how is it recognised as "origin"? Question shifts: origin gives not itself, it is instituted. What follows shows "origin" is retrospective construction of stabilised systems needing a beginning to become intelligible.

Matter awaits no author. It operates, and in operating, prior to any name, difference already is.

3. Retroactivity of Origin

3.1. Genealogy of the Fixed Point

Tradition offers a final recourse: if emergence possesses neither substrate nor subject, at least origin is a fixed point in the past, an event recognising itself as inaugural at the moment it occurred. Genealogy of this final recourse reveals it too is construction.

Mythic cosmogonies installed inaugural instant as paradigm: moment when world passed from non-being to being, chaos to order, darkness to light. Creator agent, founding act, before and after clearly demarcated. Illud tempus, primordial time, functions as ontological foundation: what occurred "in that time" grounds and legitimates what occurs now. Origin is presence repeatable via ritual, recoverable, accessible, paradigmatic. Biblical Genesis narrates creation across six days; Babylonian Enuma Elish describes Marduk victory over Tiamat and world formation from her body; Indian Rig Veda sings Purusha primordial sacrifice, whose dismembered limbs constitute cosmos parts. In each case, absolute inaugural moment exists, a before and after clearly demarcated, a creator agent and founding act separating what exists from what exists not. Ontological cost is presumption that origin is full presence, accessible, repeatable, that "inaugural moment" recognised itself as such at instant it occurred and can be recovered.

Pre-Socratic arché functions differently yet with analogous result. Already genealogised regarding substrate, re-examining it now regarding temporality is necessary. Arché is not merely first in chronological sequence; it is permanent foundation, ontologically prior at every moment. Thales water is not what existed "before" and subsequently disappeared, it is what continues sustaining everything existing now. Anaximander apeiron precedes not in time; it is inexhaustible reserve operating permanently. Foundation presence is not past; it is constant. Cost, in retroactivity register, is distinct from substantialist cost: here, what is lost is not possibility of thinking lacking substrate (already dissolved) but possibility of thinking beginning as construction, if foundation is permanent, beginning is no event; it is eternal condition. Fixed point disappears, but permanent presence occupies its place with identical result: origin is datum, no construction.

Christian theology radicalised break. Creatio ex nihilo, God creates everything from absolute nothing, including matter and time. Augustine, in Confessions (book XI), argued time was created together with world: asking "what did God do before creating world?" is ill-formed question, for no "before" existed prior to creation. Origin is absolutised, radical ontological break between nothing and being, divine will act founding ex nihilo totality of existing. Nothing is more originative than creation; prior to it was literally nothing. Augustine anticipates Hartle-Hawking in formal structure, time precedes not creation, as time precedes not universe, yet for theological reasons, not cosmological ones. Structural convergence authorises no equivalence: Augustine aims to protect divine omnipotence (were "before" present, God would have been idle, incompatible with perfection); Hartle-Hawking aims to eliminate singularity as mathematical artefact. Reasons diverge radically, even when formal conclusion coincides. What matters retaining is common structure: in both cases, "what was there before?" question dissolves, not because answer is "nothing" but because question presumes a category (temporal antecedence) applying not to what one attempts to describe. Question dissolution is more radical than any answer.

Modern science broke with theology yet maintained origin narrative structure as fixed point, and this is perhaps most instructive case because maintenance is involuntary. Big Bang theory, developed from Georges Lemaître work (proposing in 1927 "primordial atom" concept, designation already carrying arché structure), Edwin Hubble (discovering universe expansion in 1929 and supplying observational basis), and George Gamow (developing primordial nucleosynthesis theory in 1940s and predicting cosmic microwave background existence), proposes universe began roughly thirteen billion eight hundred million years ago in extreme density and temperature state. Big Bang functions structurally as secular arché: singularity as zero point, universe "birth", "first moments", "creation moment". Language is revealing: "birth" presumes prior non-existence; "first moments" presumes counting from zero mark; "creation moment" carries involuntarily theological structure into physics vocabulary. Even when physicists warn singularity is mathematical limit, no observable event, , origin narrative structure as fixed point abides operating in language and outreach. Contemporary physics, however, problematises: quantum gravity theories suggest singularity may be classical equations artefact. "Bounce" models, multiverse, quantum fluctuations emergence, singular origin dissolves. Science, without fully knowing it, approaches retroactivity: origin is given at no fixed point; it is constructed retrospectively by models organising present material conformities. Remarkable that contemporary physics dissolves internally what its proper outreach language maintains: while models eliminate singularity, outreach continues speaking of "creation moment", "universe birth", "instant zero". Language resists dissolution models operate, and this resistance is itself symptom of depth with which fixed point pattern is rooted in narrative thought structure.

Derrida exposed underlying mechanism of this fixed point persistence, and his analysis is mobilised here for its diagnostic precision, not for adopting his conceptual frame. In Of Grammatology (1967), Derrida demonstrated Western philosophical tradition systematically privileged presence, original over copy, speech over writing, signified over signifier, immediate over mediated. Origin is paradigm of this full presence: moment when thing gives itself entirely, lacking mediation, lacking difference. Différance, simultaneous play of difference and deferral, logically precedes every absolute origin. Every origin is already deferred, supplemented, inscribed in an endless chain of remissions. No simple origin exists; every presence is already difference. Divergence must be rigorously maintained: différance operates in signification regime, upon full presence impossibility in symbolic-textual regime. Position sustained here operates on ontological-material plane, upon real material conformities whose organisation as "origin" is retrospective. The two planes confuse not, and maintaining this separation is no mere academic scruple; it is rigour condition determining what each analysis can and cannot assert. Derrida shows in symbolic regime no full presence exists, all signification is deferred, supplemented, inscribed in a chain of remissions. Position sustained here shows in material regime no fixed point exists, every "origin" is retrospective construction from present conformities. Material retroactivity is no différance, and différance is no material retroactivity. Maintaining this separation is rigour condition that cannot be relaxed for argumentative convenience. Transferring categories from one plane to another, reading différance as material operation, or reading material retroactivity as textual play, would confuse registers functioning at distinct levels and with different scopes. Temptation is real: formal convergence between Derridian dissolution of full presence and origin dissolution as fixed point might suggest deep identity. Yet formal convergence is no ontological identity, operations are distinct, planes are distinct, scopes are distinct.

Foucault reinforces via another path. If Derrida dissolves fixed point in symbolic regime (no full presence), Foucault dissolves it in historical regime: at beginning of things stands not pure identity of origin; standing discord, disparity, contingency of forces in conflict. Ursprung, metaphysical search for first essence, is retrospective fiction. Genealogist discovers beginning is neither solemn nor grand; it is modest, accidental, product of contingent encounters only retrospectively organising as "foundation". Pure origin, immaculate moment when thing gives itself entirely, is construction masking constitutive discord. Foucault completes Derrida: if no full presence exists in symbolic regime, and if in historical beginning stands discord and not purity, fixed point dissolves on two complementary fronts, symbolic and material. Dissolution is no destruction: one asserts not "no origin exists" (which would be simply false, material conformities are real). One asserts origin as pure fixed point, full presence, inaugural moment recognising itself as such, is retrospective construction of stabilised systems needing a beginning to organise their intelligibility.

3.2. Cosmology as Retroactive Reconstruction

If philosophical genealogy dissolved fixed point as category, contemporary cosmology exemplifies, without fully knowing it, retroactive structure dissolution reveals. Cosmology is forensic science: reconstructing retrospectively from present material conformities, observing not directly the "beginning". Crime investigation analogy is instructive and can be carried far: detective arrives at crime scene after crime occurred; reconstructing what happened from present conformities, objects position, stains, temperatures, testimonies. "Crime scene" presented not as such at crime moment; it is detective retrospective construction. Cosmologist operates analogously: arriving at present universe and reconstructing its past from present observable material conformities. Big Bang was not observed. No one was present thirteen billion eight hundred million years ago to record primordial emergence. What we possess are material conformities, present, measurable, reproducible configurations, from which one infers retrospectively what occurred. Inference is no free speculation; constrained by multiple observational convergences and testable mathematical models. Yet abiding inference, reconstruction, no observation. Origin, as knowledge object, is construction, no direct observation of past event. Cosmology operates as forensic science: just as detective reconstructs crime from scene traces, cosmologist reconstructs past from present material conformities. This retroactivity is no methodological flaw, it is sole possible path to know what is no longer observable. Past, by definition, passed; only its effects remain in present to be interpreted.

Cosmic microwave background is most eloquent conformity. Discovered accidentally by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965, while seeking noise sources in a communications antenna, this microwave radiation fills all space uniformly, with temperature roughly 2.7 Kelvin. Its existence was predicted by George Gamow and collaborators in 1940s: if universe began in hot, dense state, radiation emitted when first atoms formed, roughly 380,000 years following Big Bang, at recombination era, should be detectable, stretched by expansion into microwave wavelengths. We see not Big Bang; we see present material conformity, radiation measured now, whose interpretation demands a beginning scenario. "Young universe photograph" is retroactive reconstruction, no direct record. Anisotropies, minuscule temperature variations, order of one part in hundred thousand, mapped with increasing precision by COBE, WMAP, Planck satellites, are conformities whose possibility distribution is constrained by large-scale structures observed now. Galaxies and clusters we see constrain retrospectively what anisotropies could have been. Primordial heterogeneities were no "seeds" in sense of containing in themselves plan of what they would produce, they were density differences that, amplified by gravitational constraints across billions of years, led to observed structures. Narrative organising them as "galaxies seeds" is cosmological present retroactive operation upon past configurations.

Light elements abundance offers identical paradigm. Primordial nucleosynthesis, in minutes following Big Bang, produced specific hydrogen (~75%), helium (~25%) proportion, with lithium and beryllium traces. Proportion was predicted theoretically by Alpher, Bethe, Gamow, in famous "$\alpha\beta\gamma$" paper of 1948, and confirmed observationally. Abundances are present material configurations: we measure present isotopes and infer "first three minutes" conditions, temperature, density, photon/baryon ratio. Origin is not given; calculated from present distributions. Agreement between theoretical prediction and observation is remarkable, constituting one of standard cosmological model's most robust confirmations. Yet agreement robustness alters not epistemic structure: knowledge is retroactive, inferred from current configurations, not obtained via direct "first three minutes" observation.

Universe expansion exhibits identical retroactive structure with particular clarity. Hubble observed in 1929 galaxies recede from us, and recession velocity is proportional to distance. Farther a galaxy, faster it recedes. Relation is linear: proportionality factor (Hubble constant) measures expansion rate. Extrapolating backward, inverting expansion, all galaxies converge in remote past, roughly thirteen billion eight hundred million years ago. Big Bang "moment" is this extrapolation limit. Yet extrapolation is precisely retroactive inference, projecting backward motion observed now and constructing an origin. What is measured is present motion; what is inferred is past state. Initial singularity, point of infinite density and temperature general relativity equations predict, is model extrapolation limit, no witnessed event. Where classical equations predict singularity, what is encountered is theory limit, point where general relativity ceases applicability and quantum gravity theory (not yet experimentally confirmed) would be necessary. Where data and confirmed theory lack, what is obtained is calculation limit, no accessible event. "Origin" extrapolation produces is inference, no observation, construction from present motions, no past moment record.

Gravitational waves, detected for first time in September 2015 by LIGO observatory (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory), complete picture with entirely new observation channel. Ripples in spacetime fabric itself, distortions propagating at light speed, compressing and stretching space through which they pass. Predicted by Einstein in 1916 as general relativity consequence, remained for nearly a century as unconfirmed theoretical prediction directly. First detection, GW150914, produced by two black holes merger roughly 1.3 billion light-years distant, measured space distortions order of a proton diameter fraction. Gravitational waves carry information regarding remote events, black hole mergers, neutron star collisions, no other observation channel allows accessing. Waves we detect were emitted millions or billions of years ago; arriving now as messengers of distant processes. Event emitting them becomes "datable event" for us only when we detect them, when interferometers record space compression. Detection institutes retrospectively event as significant moment in cosmic history. Event occurred independently, black hole merger happened whether or not interferometers existed to record it. Yet its organisation as narratable event, as "merger occurring 1.3 billion years ago in such constellation", is present operation upon past. Detection creates not event; instituting it retrospectively as datable, localisable event, insertable into cosmic narrative. Lacking detection, event would have been, but would not have been "for us". Cosmology observes not origins; reconstructing them.

Pattern is identical across four cases: present conformity (radiation, abundances, motion, waves) $\rightarrow$ retroactive inference $\rightarrow$ "origin" scenario. Each conformity is real, no arbitrary construction. Yet conformities organisation as beginning narrative is late operation, no record of something presenting itself at moment it occurred. This distinction between conformity reality and narrative retroactivity is constitutive and cannot be elided without consequence. Eliding it in one direction (denying conformities reality) leads to radical constructionism, fiction lacking anchorage. Eliding it in inverse direction (asserting origin narrative is as "given" as conformities) leads to naive realism, recoverable full presence.

Retroactivity is no epistemological flaw, it is the very condition of origin knowledge. What is retroactive is not conformity; it is cut organising it as "origin". Material conformities exist independently of being organised; their organisation into a beginning narrative depends upon present inferential conditions. In each case, radiation, abundances, expansion, waves, real conformity and retroactive narrative coexist without confusing. Confusion between both is precisely error analysis dissolves.

3.3. Belatedness, Narrative, and Cutting

Every origin narrative is posterior to origin it narrates. Genesis was written centuries following events it describes; Big Bang was theorised thirteen billion eight hundred million years following event it posits; cosmogonic narratives of all cultures were produced by already constituted civilisations projecting backward proper structure. This belatedness is non-contingent, no accident ("we were not there"), , it is structural: no way to narrate an origin exists except afterwards. Origin, as narrated, is ever retroactive construction, that at which narrative arrives when retreating, not that from which it departs. "Beginning" is investigation end, not its principle. Belatedness is irreducible: even were machine existing capable of "travelling" to primordial emergence moment, observing and narrating act would be late operation, origin, to be described, demands ever description regime emerging only after it. Asymmetry is constitutive: material processes occur; their organisation as "beginning" is late operation of systems needing a beginning to comprehend themselves.

Freud introduced Nachträglichkeit concept to describe the distinctive temporality of signification: an event is not traumatic at moment it occurs; becoming traumatic retrospectively, when a second event activates and re-signifies the first. Second event alters not physically the first, altering signification regime within which first operates, reconfiguring retrospectively its status. Lacan radicalised this logic: all signification is retroactive, sentence meaning completes at end; each word re-signifies preceding ones. Point de capiton reorganises retrospectively sequence. Retroactivity is no trait specific to cosmology: it is general structure of relationship between processes and narrative organising them. Freudian Nachträglichkeit and Lacanian point de capiton show that, even in human experience domain, meaning is not given at moment event occurs, constructed retrospectively, when later conditions reorganise signification field. If this is so in experience domain (where subject, consciousness, language exist), a fortiori it will be in cosmological domain (where none of these conditions exist at moment of processes one intends to narrate).

Wheeler showed system narrative is not fixed until stabilised by later experimental conditions. In delayed-choice experiment, in an interferometer, decision of how to measure can be made after photon traversed apparatus, and late choice determines narrative one can tell regarding photon "path". Quantum eraser permits erasing information and restoring interference patterns. No physical retrocausality, permitting not sending information to past. It is descriptive retroactivity: present measurements select description classes compatible with observed correlations. Universe existence depends not upon observers; yet its past organisation as narrative featuring "origin" depends upon present stabilisation conditions. Wheeler asked provocatively: do present observations "select" retrospectively description class compatible with universe history? Decisive point is no retrocausality but factual narrative dependence upon a posteriori inferential conditions. Wheeler experiment importance for cosmic origin question is direct: if even in laboratory interferometer photon "path" narrative depends upon later measurement conditions, universe "beginning" narrative, dependent upon present material conformities and current theoretical models, is, a fortiori, retroactive construction. Universe narrated not itself at emergence moment; narrated by complex systems emerging billions of years later needing a beginning narrative to organise proper intelligibility.

Badiou conceived event as eruption exceeding situation: radically new is un-deducible from prior state. Event brings forth what existed not in situation counted possibilities field. Affinity: Badiouan event shares with gesture irreducibility to what precedes it. Cost: Badiou demands faithful subject, recognising event and faithful to it via truth procedure. Event lacking faithful subject features no consequences, as if occurred not. This demand operates not in pre-symbolic regime: no faithful subject exists prior to symbolic regime. Position sustained here maintains eruption yet dissolves fidelity: gesture operates and produces difference without anyone being faithful to it.

Naming an origin is ever silencing what remained outside. Every origin is selection, choice, constrained yet choice, among multiple possible configurations. Big Bang is "the" universe origin, yet one could retreat further (what if something existed before Big Bang? what if Big Bang is mere transition in broader cycle?) or halt earlier (why not galaxies formation? first stars? first molecule?). Choosing a point as "origin" is ever excluding other possible points, ever silencing other equally legitimate narratives. Term "Big Bang" itself, coined by Fred Hoyle in 1949, ironically by one opposing theory, is already cutting operation: naming an instant as if explosion, when cosmology describes continuous expansion lacking centre or surface. Narrative selects; selection excludes; exclusion is constitutive of intelligibility. Every origin is, in this precise sense, symbolic violence, imposing order upon continuous, tracing borders where transformations exist, declaring beginnings where processes exist. Yet this violence is necessary: lacking it, continuous would abide undifferentiated, lacking cut, lacking intelligibility. Recognising symbolic violence is no denouncing it, comprehending it as knowledge operative condition. Every cut is partial; all partiality is inevitable; all inevitability is possibility condition and no defect. What matters is distinguishing between necessary symbolic violence (lacking cut no intelligibility exists) and violence naturalisation (supposing cut is "given" and no operation). Origin is necessary cut, yet no natural real datum.

Closure

Emergence possesses no substrate, no subject, no fixed point. Classical three pillars of origin thought are dissolved, ontological antecedence, founding agent, inaugural moment. Dissolution is solidary, three imply mutually, and this solidarity is no accumulation but reciprocal implication. Lacking substrate, no substrate subject exists, disappearing permanent entity that could be change agent. Lacking subject, no datable intentional event exists, disappearing moment when someone or something decides to act. Lacking datable event, "origin" is retroactive construction, late organisation of present conformities into beginning narrative.

Material processes feature no absolute beginnings, featuring transformations, reorganisations, critical thresholds. Big Bang is no point; extrapolation becoming problematic as we approach singularity. Primordial nucleosynthesis is no founding instant; material reorganisation regime extending across several minutes, from first second to first twenty minutes, roughly, whose temporal limits are conventional, established via temperature and density criteria that are themselves modelling products. Origin stands not at beginning; standing in middle, at moment when a stabilised process needs a beginning to comprehend itself, at moment when a sufficiently complex configuration turns backward and organises what preceded it as "beginning". Matter begins not; insisting. This insistence, fact that material processes operate lacking absolute beginning, transforming lacking first transformation, is ontological datum triple dissolution frees.

Triple dissolution eliminates not the real, eliminating metaphysical categories thought projected upon it. Distinction is crucial and must be maintained with clarity: dissolving substrate, subject, fixed point is no dissolving the real. Material conformities are real, cosmic microwave background exists, universe expansion is measurable, heavy elements were forged in supernovas, vacuum fluctuations are detectable. What dissolves is not the real; categories with which tradition organised it. Emergence is no nothingness; primary operation, authorless gesture, configuration reorganising lacking foundation or finality. Origin is real as effect, real as constructed, constructed upon the real. Neither naive realism (origin exists independently, standing there awaiting finding), nor radical constructionism (origin is fiction lacking reality). Origin is operation: functional cut organising real material conformities into a beginning narrative, operator producing intelligibility from present configurations, inferred necessary condition, no substance subsisting independently of its effects.

Triple dissolution is complete. Reader can recur to none of three pillars: neither pre-existing time, nor disturbed equilibrium, nor founding substrate. Material eruption inaugurating the real features no foundation, no subject, and its recognition as "beginning" is late operation. Yet operating, and it is this "yet" preventing dissolution from converting into nihilism. Dissolution is no end, condition for framing question differently. If tradition asked "from what substrate does world emerge, who made it, when did it begin?", question imposing itself now is different: how does the real effectively reorganise when none of these pillars subsist? What operation mode is possible lacking foundation, subject, fixed point? Question shifts from dissolution to positive construction, and it is this construction that continuation proposes to interrogate.

Origin was never there. It was there we learned to say everything had begun.
