1. The Beginning Is an Excess
1.1. The Fiction of Nothing: Genealogy of Creatio ex Nihilo
The question "why is there something rather than nothing?" is not merely the oldest question of Western metaphysics. It is also the question making the least sense when examined with rigour, for it contains within its very formulation a premise rendering it circular: it presumes nothing is a possible condition, a prior state that could have maintained itself, an alternative reality refused. Nothing is no alternative. It is no state left behind by the real. It is a retroactive fabrication, a symbolic projection existing solely within the legibility regime producing it.
Parmenides was the first to confront the logic of nothing with rigour. He argued that non-being is unthinkable and impossible, and that therefore being is one, eternal, immutable. The consequence is catastrophic for any cosmology: change becomes illusion, becoming collapses into sensory appearance. Parmenides was, nevertheless, correct in a crucial aspect, nothing is logically impossible, a conceptual fabrication. The divergence is of nature. Parmenides refuses change because all change would imply passage through non-being, and non-being is unthinkable. The argument here dissolves nothing via another path: there is no passage through non-being because there is excess, because material difference is continuous operation without any configuration requiring the prior annihilation of the former. Change demands no passage through non-being; it demands merely that being contain more than present form stabilises. Where Parmenides saw unity without difference, contemporary cosmology demonstrates difference without unity, constitutive heterogeneity, permanent metastability, excess resolving into no ultimate form. Nothing remains dissolved without sacrificing change.
The theological-metaphysical tradition following persists in the selfsame fiction under successive forms. Christian creatio ex nihilo, formulated with systematic rigour by Thomas Aquinas, renders nothing the prior condition of a free divine act. Aquinas argued that only God, as necessary being and pure act, can produce being where nothing was: creation is no transformation of pre-existing material, but a passage from non-being to being through infinite power. The ontological consequence is twofold: nothing is preserved as absence of being outside the creative will, and created being is contingent, depending entirely upon the act sustaining it. Were God to cease sustaining the world, the world would revert to the nothing from which it was drawn. In this framework, nothing is a permanent condition, a possibility ever-present beneath divine sustenance. The critique targets not the internal logic of the argument, but the premise: creatio ex nihilo presupposes a state of "nothing" from which being can be produced. If nothing is no real state, the entire construction loses its starting point.
Leibniz reconfigured the issue with the question becoming the emblem of metaphysics: "why is there something rather than nothing?" His principle of sufficient reason demands that everything existing possess a reason why it exists thus and not otherwise. The existence of the world requires a sufficient reason, which Leibniz locates in divine choice among an infinity of compossible worlds, God contemplates all coherent arrangements and selects the best. Nothing subsists in this framework as the space of un-actualised possibilities, as a logically available alternative excluded by sufficient reason. The cost is that the very formulation of the question installs nothing as the background: it presupposes that the absence of everything is a real option, that the world might not be, and that existence, by contrast, demands justification. If nothing is a pseudo-concept, if it was never a real alternative, the Leibnizian question dissolves in its own formulation, not through lack of depth, but because the sustaining premise is fiction.
Heidegger inverted tradition without abandoning it. He rendered nothing not the condition prior to being, but the Abgrund, the bottomless abyss upon which all grounding rests. In angst, according to Heidegger, the entity as a whole recedes and nothing reveals itself as a permanent possibility: not as an absence preceding being, but as a horizon traversing it. Dasein exists before nothing, which is no logical negation, but the fundamental experience that everything might not be. Heideggerian gain is real: shifting nothing from past to present, from cosmogony to existence. The cost, however, is preserving nothing as an operative ontological structure, as that enabling transcendence, the question of being, the opening of Dasein. The dissolution proposed here is more radical: nothing possesses no ontological function whatsoever, neither as prior condition (Aquinas), nor logical alternative (Leibniz), nor existential horizon (Heidegger). It is symbolic fabrication across all registers. The difference between necessity and contingency demands no recourse to nothing to be articulated, it demands the immanence of the real, the absence of necessity as an intrinsic material property, excess as the condition rendering contingency thinkable without recourse to a background of non-being.
Bergson diagnosed the error with precision: nothing is a pseudo-concept, fabricated via regressive negation from being. "Non-being" is a symbolic operation presupposing already a being at hand, it is denying presence. Intelligence models nothing upon existence: saying "where there was something, now there is nothing", when in fact where there was something there exists now the rest of the universe without that something. If one denies this, then that, then all else, the result is not nothing, it is simply the absence of all those particular things. Being is the primitive condition; nothing was never a real condition. The question "why is there something rather than nothing?" dissolves, presupposing nothing is a real alternative to being, when it is a fiction constructed by negation. The argument is foundational. Where Bergson diverges is in the solution: introducing the élan vital, an immanent creative force generating difference and duration. Constitutive temporality is correct, the real proceeds in openness. The élan vital, however, reintroduces into matter an orientation, an intrinsic tendency towards creating increasingly complex forms, returning to the teleologism intended for avoidance. From Bergsonian critique we retain the essential, the dissolution of nothing as a fiction of thought, being as primitive. We reject entirely the notion of a directed creative impulse. Excess is not vital, not oriented towards ends. It is the continuous condition of material difference, without author, without direction, without any configuration being privileged in advance.
1.2. Excess as the Permanent Condition of the Real
The central operator enabling the abandonment of the fiction of nothing without falling into vital impulse is excess, understood not as lack, not as ontological defect, but as a permanent, structural characteristic of any material configuration. There are always more compatibilities than present form can stabilise simultaneously. There are always unresolved tensions, relational potentials un-actualised under the present regime. This is the invariant condition of the real, no accidental property, but an ontological structure persisting at any description level.
Excess manifests across three registers that must not be confused with separate categories, they are faces of the same operation. First is concentration: the primordial state of the universe is no void being filled, but a plenum compressed under extreme constraints. The singularity general relativity describes is no point where nothing exists, it is a regime where density, temperature, curvature exceed any available model. Involved energies are no properties of something that "appeared", they are constraints of a material field whose concentration exceeded every stable form, forcing continuous reorganisation. Second is potential, not in the Aristotelian sense of essence realisation, but as a positive capacity for differentiation. Primordial matter contained compatibilities for configurations that no present form exhausted: electroweak symmetry contained the possibility of its own breaking, plasma contained conditions for recombination, homogenous gas contained gravitational heterogeneity generating structure. These compatibilities are no latent finalities, they are relational properties of specific material regimes which, under specific constraints, permit specific reorganisations. Third is differentiation: excess is no inert reserve awaiting mobilisation, but an active operation producing multiplicity. Every cosmological phase transition demonstrates differentiation through excess, quark-gluon plasma transformed not into hadronic matter because plasma "lacked" something, but because cosmic cooling altered constraints and previous regime compatibilities exceeded previous stable form, precipitating new configurations. Differentiation is multiplicity production from plenum, neither prior unit division nor plan realisation contained in previous form.
Deleuze insisted difference is primary, identity a secondary effect of difference, not the reverse. Gain is real and decisive: dissolving the primacy of the identical governing Western metaphysics since Plato, enabling thinking production of the new without recourse to prior essence. However, Deleuze postulates two ontological planes, virtual and actual, maintaining a duality where the virtual functions as an ontologically distinct genetic field: reserve of intensive differences "actualising" into extensive forms. Deleuzean actualisation is creation, not possible realisation, the actual resembles not the virtual producing it. The argument retains this refusal of the possible as anticipated image of the real, but refuses ontological duality. No two planes. Only the real, which is material, which is permanent excess, no latent virtuality housed in another regime, but difference in act, immediately manifest as reorganisation. When quark-gluon plasma reconfigured into hadronic matter, no virtual plane actualisation occurred, material compatibilities reorganised under new constraints. The real/concrete distinction, already founded, replaces the virtual/actual distinction without losing its productive core: the thesis that transition is no copy of a prior model.
Metastability, state where forces are in provisional equilibrium, though any perturbation triggers reconfiguration, is the constitutive condition of the real. No absolute stability; only situations where differences were channelled into repeated cycles.
Aristotelian tradition thought stability as natural state and change as perturbation. Metastability inverts this: matter's normal state is not rest, but unresolved tension. True equilibrium is a rare limit-case where excess was entirely channelled. In the primordial universe, every symmetry regime was metastable, appearing stable, yet containing structural potential whose permanence was physical impossibility under cosmic constraints. False vacuum exemplifies precisely: local equilibrium configuration appearing stable, whose decay was structural inevitability, inflationary field occupied local energy minimum, not global minimum; system could remain in state finite period, but transition to lower energy state was constraint no local stability could indefinitely suppress. False vacuum decay was no accident nor intervention: consequence of excess contained in metastable regime exceeding capacity of regime to contain indefinitely. Quark-gluon plasma was stable configuration only while sufficient energy suppressed confinement; below threshold, reconfiguration into nucleonic structures was inevitable material constraint. Same occurred in recombination: radiation density dropping below threshold, atomic binding became event whose postponement impossibility was structural. Consequence: no form is definitive. Every observed equilibrium provisional, maintained while constraints permit, transmuting when reconfiguring. Question "why does it change?" inverts into "why does stability appearance persist?" Answer: stability relational effect emerging when multiple constraints align in zone where variation is damped.
Simondon articulated this via the pre-individual, preceding individuation, condition prior to stable identity appearance. Pre-individual is more-than-one: heterogeneous compatibilities unable to simultaneously realise in single form because multiplicity exceeds any unity. However, pre-individual no separate real field with own ontological structure, plane existing prior to manifestation. Retroactive designation, what thought names when, from crystallised form, recognises "compatibilities preceded this". Compatibilities subsist in no separate plane; subsist in material operation, friction between differences form contains and cannot exhaust. Pre-individual name for permanent condition where every form contains reorganisation potentials unable to simultaneously stabilise. Excess no property individuation resolves, condition persisting through all individuations, because no particular form exhausts material compatibilities field from which it emerges.
Philosophical tradition mobilises possibility (Aristotle: dynamis, essence realisation) and virtuality (Deleuze: autonomous genetic field, surplus to any actualisation) to think what is not and could be. Argument refuses both. Possibility projects upon real finality it contains not; virtuality projects separate pure potential plane ontologically unnecessary. In their place: material compatibilities, structural conditions under specific constraints permitting certain configurations and barring others. Compatibilities possess no separate structure from real (not virtual plane), pre-figure no realisation form (not Aristotelian potential). Relational properties of field of relations in specific material regime. Fact that protons/neutrons bind into nuclei under specific energetic constraints is material compatibility, exists where matter sustaining it exists; resides in no transcendent plane, awaits no manifestation. Operation occurring or not as constraints align. Compatibility immanent to material real; possibility and virtuality project structures real contains not.
In the early universe, in maximum-symmetry regime where form notion had no sense, within this undetermined regime existed vastness of conformities contained in quantum vacuum structure, energy plenum, continuous field vibration, tension without rest. Not chaos; metastability loaded with potential. Precisely because early universe was metastable, each phase transition precipitated new forms. Not because nature had plan for them, emerging forms depended entirely on parameters that could be otherwise, but at every moment matter compatibilities exceeded previous form, forcing reorganisations where maximum symmetry configuration converted into broken symmetry configuration.
1.3. Cosmology Against Creatio ex Nihilo
Contemporary cosmological models offer descriptions of early universe behaviour under extreme conditions. Theories, symbolic constructions thought elaborates to organise observable data into intelligible pattern. Must be stated with absolute precision, because confusion here is systematic: no cosmological model is direct window to real in-itself. Symbolic organisations of operating structures. Model efficacy reveals structure in real description captures; capturing something true not equivalent to transparency, being precise symbolic representation, map corresponding to territory without being territory.
General relativity classical extrapolation leads to singularity, regime where density, temperature, curvature tend to infinity. Result marks boundary where classical description ceases to suffice, not directly accessible physical state. Known laws break at limit. Time notion presupposes space-time structure whose emergence singularity precedes. What succeeded before boundary undetermined not by accidental ignorance, structural physics limitation.
Hartle and Hawking proposed, in Euclidean quantum gravity framework, description where imaginary time replaces real time in initial universe state. At Planck scale, near boundary, space-time geometry becomes so curved, densely concentrated, no speaking of "before" and "after": time ceases being dimension in which things evolve, becomes dimension analogous to space. Hawking analogy: sphere surface has no origin point. Walking surface towards North Pole finds no starting point, North Pole northernmost point, no beginning, limit where "north" notion ceases sense. Finite but unbounded: "what was before?" question dissolves formally as "what is north of North Pole?" Means not real "has no boundary", means model requires no temporal boundary. Affirmation about theory, not real prior to capture.
Vilenkin reformulated proposing universe tunnelled from null vacuum state via quantum tunnelling effect. Sounds like prior nothing from which universe emerged, design creation. Wrong reading. Vilenkin proposes quantum laws exist logically prior to universe physical existence, Vilenkin's "nothing", null geometry quantum state, not philosophical tradition nothing: physical state describable by wave function, governed by quantum laws. If laws apply, not nothing: absolute nothing governed by no law. Tunnelling theory-described process, not revelation of real outside description. Operational "nothing" backwards imaginary formalisation extrapolation, point where universe energy zero, no matter, movement. No observer occupied point; no truth about it possible outside designating mathematical language.
Casimir effect offers measurable illustration vacuum never absence. Two metallic plates close in vacuum experience mutual attraction. Vacuum not empty: between plates, sub-set zero-point energy fluctuations exist; outside, complete amplitude. Pressure asymmetry pushes plates together. Measurable, experimentally confirmed. Vacuum never energy absence, always potential excess, continuous material difference reorganisation, unceasing intensity redistribution. Calling it "vacuum" linguistic error carrying empty connotation; calling zero-point energy precise.
Cosmology exposes whole nothing question, genealogy from creatio ex nihilo to Heidegger/Bergson, suffered category error: confused legibility limit with real limit. Big Bang singularity no universe event; point where description ceases functioning, formalisms cease converging to stable values. Singularity language property, not real property. Real prior to boundary remains inaccessible in-itself. Not nothing, undescribable in terms possessed. Not empty, excess finding no adequate capture regime.
1.4. Primordial Asymmetry: Excess Differentiating
What can be said in description regime starting after limit is radically contingent excess reorganisation. Not gradual form determination from unformed matter; differential intensity channelisation. Early universe, first infinitesimal second fraction after threshold, maximum symmetry plasma, theory predicts high energies electroweak/weak interactions merge into single electroweak interaction, Grand Unified Theories (unconfirmed experimentally) postulate strong force converged with electroweak. Matter/antimatter exist in virtually identical proportions. Symmetry maximum in sense few differentiations stabilised, precisely because few differentiations stabilised excess maximum: no channelisation, partial stabilisation, compatibilities coexist in indistinctness regime.
Matter-antimatter asymmetry, baryogenesis, exemplifies reorganisation contingency. Sakharov identified three necessary conditions for asymmetry emergence: baryon number conservation violation processes, C and CP symmetry violation, out of thermal equilibrium interactions. Theoretically possible at high energies, concrete mechanism open particle physics problem. Observed result infinitesimal asymmetry, per billion quark-antiquark pairs annihilating, one matter particle survived. All present universe matter resides in asymmetry. Exact mechanism undetermined; laws govern possible asymmetries, realised asymmetry differential excess reorganisation in permanent metastability environment.
Subsequent primordial nucleosynthesis, one second to three minutes after expansion start, energies sufficient for proton/neutron combination into helium/lithium nuclei, insufficient to break nuclei, excess local stabilisation. Excess channelised in specific structure: strong binding holding nucleons together. Temperatures slightly higher, all dissolves again. Slightly lower, matter freezes into different forms. Nucleosynthesis trajectory fixed by universe expansion cooling matter at precise rate, rate contingent, undetermined by prior factors, realised because primordial universe geometry density/temperature dropped specifically. Each stage excess local stabilisation, not void filling.
Important to make explicit distinction argument presupposes: temporal priority versus operational priority difference. Saying "excess precedes form" asserts no time existed where excess existed and form not, as if excess prior time line state and form posterior state. No time "before form" chronologically: physical description reach possesses material configuration, constraints, operation regime. Priority operational: excess condition from which form precipitates, not state existing prior to form in temporal sequence. Geometric analogy precise, not chronological: topography condition of water running, topography "existing before" water temporally untrue, compatibility excess condition of form stabilising within it. Form relational excess effect, not temporal successor.
Distinction dissolves origin thinking recurrent confusion. "What was before beginning?" question assumes temporal priority, time axis where states succeed and "before" designates prior position. If excess operationally prior to form, question dissolves: no "before" temporally, time itself product of material relations existing when configuration exists, form, constraint, operative regime. Excess not "before" time; base of each instant, permanent condition of configuration. Stabilising form coexists with unabsorbed excess, un-actualised compatibilities, unresolved tensions, reorganisation pressing differences. Operational priority simultaneous, not sequential: excess present in each instant as real structure, not past state memory. Inflationary vacuum decaying, no transition from "pure excess" to "form", transition from metastable configuration (containing excess relative to opening compatibilities) to another configuration (containing own excess, different, irreducible). Excess never exhausts; priority never ceases. Permanence forbids thinking configuration as final state, definitive equilibrium, form absorbing available excess.
Beginning excess not lack, next question asserts: how to think regime-to-regime transition? Not cut, temporal separation, fold, material reorganisation.
2. What Is Born Does Not Begin: Fold vs. Cut
2.1. Operative Continuity: Nothing Born from Nothing
Scholastic principle ex nihilo nihil fit, from nothing nothing arises, no metaphysical truth universe obeys as cosmic moral law. Operative constraint. Matter contains no true void. Where energy existed, reconfiguration occurs. Where field existed, what description captures not persists, vanishes not. Leibniz formulated as continuity principle, natura non facit saltus, nature makes no leaps, quantum physics nuances without refuting: quantum discontinuities (energetic level leaps, quantisation) discrete transitions between available states, no arising from nothing. Quantisation refutes certain quantities mathematical continuity, not ontological continuity, no being arising from non-being.
Early universe offers constant continuity examples. First instants plasma cooled below given temperature, protons/electrons not "created from nothing": existed as elementary particles maximum agitation state. Cooling, mere temperature change, permitted electromagnetic force no longer maintaining ionisation. Electrons approached protons. Atoms formed. Nothing arose from nothing. Prior incompatibility, between isolated electrons and ambient temperature, resolved via reorganisation.
Primordial nucleosynthesis operated within absolute constraint, conservation and contingency across two levels. First expansion minutes, temperature/density extreme isolated nuclei unexisting, relativistic velocity energetic collisions instant-undid aggregation before stabilising. Universe cooled, particle kinetic energy decreased. Critical point, one second post Big Bang, collision average speed dropped enabling proton/neutron brief pairing into deuteron. Deuterons captured other nucleons, forming helium-3, helium-4, stable nuclei (two protons, two neutrons). Lithium-7 formed minimal proportions due to high third-proton incorporation energy barrier. Simultaneous phenomenon: cooling permitted nucleus formation, universe density decreased, universe expanded, material spread. Diluted region, particle collisions rarer. Second critical point, twenty minutes post initial event, density small collisions ceased. Nucleosynthesis stopped abruptly. Observed proportion frozen: 75% hydrogen, 25% helium, minimal lithium-7/beryllium-7.
Proportions created from nothing: none. Each precise operative window consequence: period temperature/density permitted specific nuclear reaction, reaction occurred frequency determined by collision rate/reaction cross-section, conditions changed reaction stopped. Constraint two separate fundamental levels. Level one: absolute conservation. No particle destroyed, free protons/neutrons in primordial plasma bind into compact nuclear configurations. Total proton/neutron number constant nucleosynthesis temperatures, baryon number conservation respected these energies (violated higher energies baryogenesis). Electron number constant, lepton conservation. Total electric charge zero. Total energy constant, energy distribution form changes radically: particle kinetic energy transforms into nucleus binding energy. Nothing created. Nothing vanishes. Continuous matter/energy redistribution under physical constraints regulating field/particle interaction. Level two: irreducible material contingency. Primordial nucleosynthesis specific proportion un-inevitable, un-determined by law logic. Contingent upon early universe specific parameters un-forced, expansion rate, initial density, baryon/photon ratio. Parameter slightly different, nucleosynthesis occurred, producing different element proportions. Expansion rate 0.1% faster, more hydrogen, less helium, shorter nuclear fusion time window, unbound free neutrons decaying before capturing partners. Baryon/photon ratio ten times higher, higher helium proportions, frequent nuclear reactions denser medium.
Continuity pattern repeats throughout cosmology. Recombination, 380,000 years post Big Bang, electrons bound to nuclei, inverse of initial ionisation. No atomicity "creation" from nothing. Atomicity capacity to hold bound electrons existed as material compatibility, compatibility means no transcendent plan awaiting manifestation. Matter under conditions behaves specifically. Lacking operative condition: temperature low enough for electromagnetic force holding bound electrons without energetic collisions continuously ejecting. Ionised plasma, electron/proton free species, thermal energy separated. Universe cooled, spatial average temperature dropped, regions underwent recombination. Un-simultaneously: cooler regions recombined earlier; warmer later. Recombination no form birth from nothing. Compatibility regime transformation: transition from forced thermal separation regime to bound stable state regime. Universe "began atomic" not in instant, folded gradually ionised plasma into neutral gas, changing thermal constraint.
2.2. The Fold as Material Reorganisation
Fold concept replaces temporal cut concept. Fold dispenses cut, idea that at given moment form ceases absolutely, another begins from nothing. Inflection, continuous curvature where prior regime persists transformed in new regime.
Focus fold not Deleuzean, no operation mediating virtual plane (pure potential, un-actualised multiplicity) and actual plane (precipitated form). Duality presupposes two separate ontological planes, passage as genuine creation. For Deleuze, virtual ontologically distinct genetic field "actualising" into forms; Deleuzean fold (Le Pli) operates virtual/actual. Fold here operating internal to real, no separate virtual plane, no transcendent potential region. Virtual/actual distinction replaced by real/concrete distinction: material differences (real) reorganising via excess, inscriptive regime (concrete) cropping reorganisations into phases/narratives. Deleuzean fold gain retained, thinking transition without cut, without before/after separation. Ontological framework distinct.
Philosophical tradition disposes of another classical operator thinking preserving transition: Hegelian Aufhebung. Aufhebung, suppression, conservation, elevation simultaneously, mechanism by which dialectical process moment denied, retained next moment under transformed form. Immediate consciousness discovers sensory certainty insufficient, suppresses as ultimate truth, preserves integrated partial moment. Aufhebung shares formal structure with fold: transformation annihilates not preceding; reincorporates under different regime. Hegelian sublation/fold affinity: what was persists transformed. Primordial plasma folding into neutral atomic gas, prior regime operating matter persists in next regime, protons/electrons same; relational configuration changes.
Divergence threefold, each point decisive. First: Aufhebung motor is contradiction (Widerspruch), each moment contains internal negation forcing self-surpassing. Thesis generates antithesis containing logical incompleteness, contradiction impels synthesis. Fold motor not contradiction, excess. Matter reorganises not containing internal negation; contains more compatibilities than form stabilises simultaneously. Excess no dialectical opposition, material superabundance. Precipitating form no opposite synthesis; partial difference channelisation exceeding configuration. Second: Aufhebung teleological, each stage superior to prior approaching Absolute, Spirit self-comprehending realisation. Hegelian dialectic possesses direction: abstract to concrete, immediate to mediated, partial to total. Fold possesses no direction. No fold "superior" to prior implying progress, completeness, final state approach. Nucleosynthesis not "superior" to quark-gluon plasma; recombination not "truer" than ionised plasma. Contingent reorganisations where constraints changed, different forms compatible. Third: Aufhebung requires Subject, Spirit (Geist), traversing stages, self-negating, self-recovering, alienating, returning. Without Spirit subject, Hegelian dialectic loses motor/intelligibility. Fold strictly subjectless. No entity traverses cosmic folds; no Spirit recognises self in reorganising matter. Matter reorganises under material constraints; no interiority, consciousness, experience intervenes. Aufhebung gain, transformation preserving attention, retained; metaphysical framework, contradiction motor, teleology direction, Spirit subject, rejected.
All material transformation is fold: prior regime inflection into new regime, compatibilities changed, matter remains. Primordial nucleosynthesis, protons/neutrons binding into nuclei, matter suffers no creation. Suffers fold. Emerging nuclear matter reconfigured free protons/neutrons. Nucleus new in sense possessing properties isolated nucleons lacked, cooling stability, bound state electron capture capacity, un-new in sense created from nothing. Matter folding upon self, finding new compatibility, stabilising in prior-impossible regime. No temporal cut; no non-nucleon to nucleon instant transformation. Transition: temperature drops, binding nuclear collisions probability increases; density decreases, time between collisions increases, binding forms/consolidates.
Recombination offers paradigmatic example. Electrons un-"created" to bind nuclei when temperature drops below ionisation threshold. Electrons existed. It is field opening where material constraints define possibilities, where structured contingency operates perpetually, where concrete actualisation is always contingent. Nothing in the past obliges the future.
"Openness" is no figure of speech in this context. Precise material property designation: multiple possibilities spaces existence un-eliminated logical restriction. Cosmological bifurcation occurring, universe transposing instability point opening multiple paths, possibility field no metaphor. Real dynamic state space structure of universe. Closure
If beginning is a symbolic cut and fold is a material operation, then origin designates the retroactive name of a continuous reorganisation whose realisation field remained open. Nothing is no prior condition, it is a late fiction of thought. That which operates is an excess of compatibilities over any present form, an excess tending towards nothing, aspiring to no destiny, reorganising because conditions cease to permit the former form.
The fold is the name for this operation: an inflection where the prior regime persists yet transformed, where previously impossible compatibilities become realisable, where being reorganises without ceasing to be. None of these reorganisations is determined, at each bifurcation, multiple paths remain open, and concrete actualisation depends upon fluctuations no equation can anticipate. Contingency is no defect of knowledge. It is an invariant structure of the real. Each actualising bifurcation irreversibly constrains all future reorganisations, without determining any: the past limits without compelling, reduces without prescribing, inherits without programming.
If every reorganisation is a fold without a cut, if contingency is constitutive and openness is material, then space cannot be a container given in advance, an inert stage where processes unfold indifferently. Space is relational unfolding. And like all material folds, the fold of space is also open: there are more possible configurations than those actualising, and actualisation is contingent. It remains to think how this unfolding operates, how material difference organises into distance, geometry, cohesion. If space is relation and not container, if gravity is cohesion and not force on a stage, if contingency penetrates to geometry itself, then the questions hitherto formulated concerning temporality and matter must now be reformulated in terms of relation. The fold established here is not merely temporal, it is spatial. Space reorganises because it is matter in relation, and matter in relation is matter folding itself.
